Sumba’s southern beaches

Sumba is still one of the least visited islands of Indonesia, often bypassed for Lombok and Flores. It is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands and lies slightly further south than its neighbors. However, just a 1-hour flight from Bali and boasting pristine sparkling beaches and world-class surf breaks, this gem of an island is well worth a visit. There are not a lot of accommodation choices there yet, but with a bit of planning you can explore some of the most amazing deserted coves. Sumba is a large island with a very arid interior. Most tourism lies on the southwest coast and centers around surf and the annual pasola festival. However there are fantastic untouched azure beaches stretching all around the island. This is slowly becoming a must-see place for people seeking tranquility and a place where time seems to have stood still while tourism is booming all around. The beaches vary dramatically in terms of their landscape, depending on the surrounding ecosystems. Sumba is also home to vast tracks of mangrove forest that merge into the sea and rivers around the south central region and further to the east. Valleys of forests give way to endless powder sand beaches, whereas the southwest the coast is characterized by a continuous line of rocky outcrops harboring idyllic bays. In the southeast, in the Tarimbang area, there are some small hotels and some truly breathtaking beaches. Some are accessible by windy and bumpy roads that are slowly being renovated. The main roads out of Waingapu, the capital of East Sumba and Tambaloka, the capital of Southwest Sumba, run through the center and to the southwest coastal area, where many the eastern beaches are located along smaller tracks with more basic accommodation options. However, the natural beauty of the area more than makes up for the difficult journey that you go through to get there. Other parts of Indonesia are being over fished, but in the waters off Sumba there is a plethora of wonderful fresh seafood that will appeal to anyone who enjoys fishing. Simply drop a line and large mahi mahi, barracuda, tuna and snapper are plentiful. A fishing boat is also the best way to explore some of the more out of the way coves and bays that are home to turtles, dolphins and coves where you will hardly encounter a single soul. Some yachts use this route but the main Indonesian sailing tours do not really venture over. Thus, It is more likely that you will not encounter any other tourists at all on this side of the coast. Venturing toward the beaches in the central southern coast, you will reach Manupeu Tanah Daru National Park. Here lie the Konda and Maloba (or Kondamaloba) Bays. To get there, one bypasses varied landscape, a lush dense mangrove forest filled with the shrieks of birds and monkeys. This area is a bird watchers paradise and filled with a variety of species. There is, however, no accommodations in this area and you have to head inland to Lewa and its surrounding areas to stay the night, so visit these areas earlier in the day. At lower tide, it is possible to swim both in the sublime estuary and on the beach. However, when the tide is a bit higher, it is a little bit rough and also not good for surf, therefore it would be best to remain cautious. This is the perfect spot for a picnic and exploration of mangroves, which run along parts of the coast. The thick long lianas create a tapestry of trees where birdlife can thrive. Further along the coast is the coastal area around Lamboya where tourism is more plentiful and home to more established, higher-end resorts, one of which does not allow beach access to anyone. However Etreat Beach is accessible and has a hotel just above it, and is a good place to base yourself if you are after a more comfortable beach holiday. With easy access to a sublime white sand beach and shimmering sea, it is easy to lose yourself here. The rocky coastline runs all the way around the west to Tambaloka. Lazy days of sun, sea and surf give way to magnificent sunsets and starry nights. As most of the villages are small with little or no electricity, the stars are visible here as a result of the total darkness and lack of reflection. Although Sumba is a little harder to traverse and has far less amenities than its counterparts around Indonesia, the sheer beauty of this island and its coastline make it well worth the visit.

Sir Patrick Moore astronomy centre plans scrapped, says Brian May

Sir Patrick, who died last December aged 89, said he hoped that his West Sussex home would one day be converted into an astronomy centre in his name.

The thatched cottage, known as Farthings, was the filming location for The Sky At Night during the last ten years of the astronomer's life, due to his ill health.

May, who has a PhD in astro physics, told The Telegraph last year that the Royal Astronomical Society had rejected the treasures left behind by Sir Patrick.

At the time he said: Youd think the Royal Astronomical Society would be interested, but theyre, like, 'Oh, weve got an awful lot of stuff already'

"Patrick leaves behind him a wonderful library and all these amazing things from astronomers he met. You think it might be easy to give it to a museum, but theyll stick it in a cupboard somewhere and no one will see it.

From a remarkable meteor shower to stunning pictures of the swirling gases and galaxies in deep space, these are just a few of the phenomenal images entered into this year's Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition.

Over a thousand amateur and professional photographers from around the world entered the competition, but Australian Mark Gee won the top prize for his beautiful image of the sky over the southern hemisphere, decorated with a number of astronomical highlights.

The shot shows central regions of the Milky Way Galaxy - over 26,000 light years away - appearing as a tangle of dust and stars, lit up by a lighthouse on the Cape Palliser, New Zealand, shining out to sea.

Winning shot: Mark Gee's image of the Milky Way came first in the Earth and Space Category as well as being voted overall winner

HAMMOND | Cardboard 3-D glasses with red and blue lenses were passed down rows of people seated in folding chairs.

The lights dimmed, and a video appeared on a large projector screen, taking viewers on a 3-D virtual tour of the space behind the screen: the PCL Alverno microbiology lab.

Minutes later, the group saw the equipment and procedures firsthand.

The Hammond lab was the site Thursday of the 20th Innovators Cafe. PCL Alverno hosted the event, which was sponsored by the Gerald I. Lamkin Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center and the Society of Innovators of Ivy Tech Community College Northwest.

Lab director Dale Kahn and microbiology manager Jim Clark described in depth the work Alverno performs, namely processing samples submitted by local physicians, research groups and 26 hospitals in Indiana and Illinois.

One piece of high-tech equipment can identify bacteria a day earlier than traditional methods and help physicians identify the best antibiotic to fight it. Another equipment system automates specimen processing.

PCL Alverno is a designated Siemens Microbiology Innovation Center, serving as a reference for other labs interested in what Siemens offers in microbiology testing.

"May I remind you: this is not Silicon Valley, this is not Boston, this is not New York. This is Northwest Indiana," said John Davies, managing director of the Society of Innovators.

The Innovators Cafe is a series of two-hour sessions that draw leaders from local businesses, municipalities, organizations and academic settings. Each event is at a new location, which groups can tour.

Thomas Coley, chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College Northwest, said hosting the event at the lab would deepen people's appreciation for having such technology in their own backyard.

"Splinter Cell" continues to evolve

He was the calm, approachable voice of reason during a public health disaster that gripped Toronto a decade ago.

She was the tiny but powerful woman who helped lead the city through its darkest days battling the disease.

Both were the public faces of SARS in Toronto and both are now gone.

Dr. Donald Low, chief of microbiology at Mount Sinai Hospital for nearly three decades and a key figure in the fight against infectious diseases, died this week of a brain tumour at 68.

His death comes five years after Dr. Sheela Basrur who as Torontos chief medical officer of health stood beside Low to reassure the public during the SARS crisis died of a rare cancer at age 51.

They both had the ability to deal with very difficult situations with grace, a sense of humour, a sense of humility, said Public Health Ontario president Dr. Vivek Goel, a former colleague of both.

A lot of it was the chemistry between them. They had different strengths they were able to bring, and worked together on answering the questions that were coming up.
