Liberty Interactive Remains Neutral

We reaffirm our long-term Neutral recommendation on Liberty Interactive Corp. (LINTA). The company reported mixed financial results for the second quarter of 2013. Liberty Interactive currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Why Kept at Neutral?

We believe that the TV home shopping business will continue to flourish in the near future. The QVC segment of the company has successfully transformed itself into a powerful global brand, which may boost Liberty Interactives revenues in the double-digits. Management stated that its online sales will constitute more than 50% of the total revenue in the U.S. by 2014. Growing adoption of high-end smartphones in the U.S. is the main reason for revenue growth.

Moreover, Liberty Interactive currently holds about 22% of the equity and 57% of the total votes of all classes of common stock of TripAdvisor Inc. (TRIP). TripAdvisor is the worlds largest travel site, which allows users to post reviews of airlines, hotels, and vacation resorts throughout the world.

On Aug 2013, Liberty Interactive launched a new broadcast channel called QVC PLUS. This second channel currently airs all the live broadcasts (TV shows) of the existing QVC channel at a delay of three hours. Management has decided to introduce some special programming in the QVC PLUS channel in order to broaden QVCs offerings.

QVC PLUS is currently available to DIRECTV (DTV) customers. Moreover, QVC has entered into carriage deals with Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC) and Bright House Networks.

Meanwhile, the stock price of Liberty Interactive has soared 35% in the last year and is trading at the high-end of its 52-week price range. We believe that the stock is currently fairly valued.

Tiffin Libertarian launches Ohio gubernatorial bid

Fostoria-born Charlie Earl spoke to North Central Ohio Conservatives about his candidacy for Ohio governor at a meeting Thursday.

Earl attended Mohawk High School and served in the Ohio House of Representatives as a Republican. He said he had worked with Sen. Sherrod Brown and Gov. John Kasich and said that after 30 years, Ohio government has not improved.

Earl is running for governor as a Libertarian.

"One of the reasons I became a Libertarian ... was that I liked the concept of 'Do what you want to do, as long as you don't harm others or their property,'" he said. "Do you need a law for every little thing we do? Why not have a law that says if you mess up somebody's life or somebody's property, you're responsible, regardless of the reason?"

Earl said it takes years to make a difference, but he said "the key was to turn it in the right direction."

He said Ohioans must be bold and have the "courage to say no" to the federal government.

He said he has a "triple vision" for Ohio.

"The first part is capturing and recapturing ... that vision of our Founders," he said. "They were idealists. They were pragmatists."

His second vision included internal and eternal vision. "That's the sense in your heart ... that I believe is God-given," he said.

Earl said all citizens are allowed by law to search for "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" and that it offers a sense of fulfillment.

Islands want greater voice in Europe after 2014 referendum

Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles are also targeting specific provision for them within any new European Union accession treaty.

The scale of the island councils' ambitions were unveiled yesterday at the start of a two-day conference in Kirkwall about their attempts to win greater powers.

Steven Heddle, Orkney's leader, identified enhancing the islands' relationship with Europe as a crucial policy area of their campaign to win more influence and access to EU funding.

He said this could be achieved through regional status and a seat, or seats, on the European Committee of the Regions.

But Mr Heddle said the islands councils could aim higher: "We could ask to be represented directly in Brussels as part of the national representation of our member state, be it the UK or Scotland, as is the case with other islands."

The idea is that the proposals would allow the islands to monitor European legislation, in the same way as Madeira, the Azores and the Baltic Aland Islands.

Mr Heddle added: "We should be bold and seize the opportunities that may arise, such as ensuring that we are written into any new EU accession treaty that proves necessary for an independent Scotland, to give our islands a legal guarantee of a better level of recognition by the EU."

Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles councils recently launched their "Our Islands, Our Future" campaign to win more powers regardless of what happens in next year's referendum.
