Hot weather, activity on Volusia, Flagler Beaches

Visitors from near and far enjoyed Volusia and Flagler's beaches on Sunday, and crowds are expected to be large again Monday given the glorious weather forecast.

There is only a 30 percent chance of rain for Monday, said meteorologist Arlena Moses of National Weather Service in Melbourne. That is lower than what we expect for this time of year.

Cars lined both sides of State Road A1A in Flagler Beach, though the beach looked sparsely populated.

It's laid back here; that's what I love about it, said Bethany Linderman, who hails from Tampa.

She and her husband, Craig, have come to Flagler Beach every Labor Day weekend for the past five years. Their 3-year-old daughter

Denah has accompanied them her whole life.

I like pink, she said, as she waited to order a cone from Sally's Ice Cream.

Winter Park resident Debbie Lesser is also a frequent visitor to Flagler Beach for its down-home smallness.

I come at least twice a year, she said. Fourth of July, Labor Day and Christmas are my favorite times. There are always a lot of cute things to do, and when they have fireworks, they are better than Disney's.

Some Galveston beaches under advisories for high bacteria

Just in time for Labor Day, a handful of beaches on Galveston Island have posted advisories warning of high levels of bacteria in the water. Swimming is not recommended when bacteria levels are elevated.

This is not a new thing, as over the past few months these warnings have been issued off and on forGalveston Island's beaches, but over a holiday weekend they are reason to think twice about exposure to the beach water.

Galveston County Health District spokesmanKurt Koopmann said more water samples are being collected for testing today. He said that after heavy rains, bacteria levels rise.

"Whenever you have a lot of rain, things that elevate bacteria levels usually get into the waterways," he said, alluding to waste and road runoff."Some months we have no advisories, and sometimes we have many."

These warnings are simply issued to inform the public of the elevated bacteria level so beach visitors can make an informed choice on whether to swim in the waters affected, the advisory states. Once elevated bacteria levels are detected, water samples are taken daily until the tests return to normal.

The Galveston County Beach Watch Program, in cooperation with the Texas General Land Office, developed and implemented Texas Beach Watch to monitor bacteria in coastal recreation waters adjacent to beaches that are used by the public and to notify the public if water quality standards for these bacteria are exceeded. The sampling and notification program helps to ensure the safety of Galveston County beaches and the safety of its visitors.

According to the Galveston County Health District website, samples are taken from the 52 sites on a weekly basis and tested for bacteria. Advisories like these do not mean that the beaches are closed, but that visitors should use caution.

"These are not at all unusual, and Galveston beaches fair very well in national reports," Koopmann says. He adds that none of these advisories are for flesh-eating bacteria, which have popped up in waters off the Louisiana coast.

These sort of advisories are issued to inform the public of the elevated bacteria level so each person can make an informed choice of whether or not they want to swim in these beaches. Water samples are taken daily until the tests return to normal.

Paul G. Allen Appoints Head of Artificial Intelligence Institute

SEATTLE, Sept. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Vulcan Inc. Chairman Paul G. Allen announced today that Dr. Oren Etzioni has joined his family of organizations as the Executive Director of his artificial intelligence institute based in Seattle. Etzioni will be in charge of expanding the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence with new hires, and directing and developing a wide range of AI initiatives.

Etzioni joins Allen's institute from the University of Washington's Computer Science Department, where he was the Washington Research Foundation Entrepreneurship Professor and Director of the Turing Center. His research has focused on solving fundamental problems in AI, with an emphasis on automatic learning of knowledge from text.

"Oren is exceptionally talented, and he shares my vision and enthusiasm for the exciting possibilities in the field of AI,including opportunities to help computers acquire knowledge and reason,"said Allen. "I've been very encouraged by the tremendous strides we've made in brain research at the Allen Institute for Brain Science over the past decade. With Oren's leadership, we will apply that same model to explore the critical questions in AI today."

A faculty member at the University of Washington since 1991, Etzioni holds a bachelor's in computer science from Harvard University and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. He is a recipient of a National Young Investigator Award, a Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award, and was selected as an Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Fellow. In addition to working as a venture partner with Madrona Venture Group, he has founded several startup companies, including the shopping site Decide.com and the price prediction engine Farecast, acquired by Microsoft in 2008 to become the foundation for Bing Travel.
