Happy Endings Review: Penny Made a Boo-Boo

Penny’s attempts at trying to move on past Pete land her in the arms of the car czar in “The Ballad of Lon Saforsky.

The czar is just about the last man on Earth anyone would want to have sex with, and so naturally poor choices Penny ends up unable to quit him; much like Brad can’t stop inviting people over when he’s in an awkward or uncomfortable situation.

The Coupon Challenge

Penny’s desire to find a hookup to get Pete out of her system is perfectly fine, but it become old pretty quickly as I watched Penny continually jump into bed with the Czar. If Jane hadn’t done some smoothing over he may have never left her. Which is the biggest gripe I had: Penny makes a big decision to break of the engagement with Pete – showing a lot of courage and backbone on her part – and then she winds up stuck in another relationship with very little courage or backbone.

Max’s decision to enter the best gay man pageant isn’t the first one Max has entered, but the tricks and antics between Max, Alex, and Dave make it enjoyable. Dave’s impersonation of Sonny and Cher is both genius and slightly creepy, and Alex attempting to school Max in throwing just the right amount of shade also got me.

"Un-sabotagable" is the stronger comedy of the hour, however, with Mark Paul Gosselaar making a quick cameo as one of Max’s very upset ex-boyfriends.

Eliza Coupe has proven to be versatile with Jane’s neuroses, and is able to keep them fresh and interesting even when they’re bordering on overused. Jane’s attempts to make over Max, her pull down diagrams for areas of improvement, and learning that Max’s life is so terrible that not even his ex wants to attempt to sabotage are hilarious.

Jane using her powers for good and making over Max is a great start to sabotage-ability, and I really enjoy seeing put together Max once in a while, but we all knew it was never going to last. Max is the type of guy who is going to use his front door for a headboard and find gum in his hair.

Dave’s attempts at sabotaging Alex’s groupons are mostly a reflection of him being just as crazy and impulsive as Alex, but in different areas. Dave talks a big game, but he’s sometimes just a carbon copy of Alex with a better vocabulary.  Chase’s subsequent monologue of doom for Max at the closing of the episode is rather amazing – no, not the monologue itself – but the reaction it brings out in the rest of everyone else. They couldn’t care less about what Chase said only his perfect timing.

Blue Bloods Review: The Zombie Drug

The first thing that caught my attention in "Devil's Breath" was that Blue Bloods is actually filmed in New York City.  It makes the street sequences pop. No other city looks like New York.

He's Covered In Blood

I found it amusing that the zombie drug had the street name devil's breath.  As though zombie drug wasn't quite bad ass enough.

I felt for Carter.  He lost his girlfriend in one of the most horrific ways possible and will always question what really happened that night. The blanks in his memory will surely drive him crazy for years to come.

Did the two woman really need to kill his girlfriend when she found them robbing him?  I suppose that's a silly question.  Does anyone ever need to commit murder?  It just seemed like they could have made a run for it and if they'd laid low for a while, they might have gotten away with it.

Jamie's storyline was difficult to watch because it rung so true.  In trying to help a fellow Officer, Jamie ended up making matters much worse.

If Officer Grosso had not intervened and someone had gotten killed during that robbery I'm sure the press would have been all over him for not doing his job.  But since he'd had a couple of drinks when he drew his weapon he was still under fire even though everything had gone well.

I understood the reason for the rule.  We certainly don't want intoxicated police officers brandishing their weapons but terminating the man was an overreaction fueled by bad press.

Despite the backlash, it was good to see Frank hand down a more reasonable sentence.

I had to laugh at Erin's reaction to getting the phone call from Nicky's school in this Blue Bloods quote

Erin: I spent 12 years in Catholic school. There is no way the principal is calling me at 7:30 in the morning to request a meeting to tell me you're a straight A student. | permalink

It was fun to see Frank remind his daughter how she used to be the rebel and how the universe had blessed her with a daughter with similar traits.

Even better was Erin pointing out to Nicky that she seemed perfectly ready to enforce the rules when they applied to the police officer but was a rebel when the rules applied to her.

Once again, another great Friday night with the Reagans.

Vegas Review: Walking Away a Winner

"Past Lives" brought about the reunion I'd been longing for coupled with a side story I didn't see coming but probably should have.

Savino Plays Dirty

I've always been impressed with Mia and tonight's episode was no exception.  Even when Harry showed up twitchy and nervous, demanding $20,000 in cash and waving a gun, Mia was all business.  The worse things got, the calmer Mia became. It's as though you could see the calculations going on in her mind as she tried to figure out what to do next.

As usual she and Jack made a great team.  They were both so calm, yet so in sync. Even being handcuffed didn't stop their banter in this Vegas quote

Jack: I guess a guy will do anything to get close to you.
Mia: Never a dull moment between us. | permalink

When Harry let Mia go and dragged Jack off I kept waiting for her to say something to him, but the look in her eyes said it all.  She was devastated. She truly believed he wasn't coming back and the horror of their situation left her silent.

In a way, that made their reunion all the better.  That kiss had been a long time coming.  I doubt the love story between the deputy and the mob boss' daughter will ever run smooth but it will certainly always be interesting.

The bright shine of Dixon and Yvonne's new relationship was tarnished with a dose of 1960s racist reality.  Until the moment they showed the Colored Only sign the difference in their skin color never even occurred to me. But in 1960 that was a huge obstacle. It's sad to think it may still be for some people in 2013.

But it was great to see Dixon man up for a girl worth having…

Dixon: There may be things I can't change but I'm not giving up. I know when something's worth fighting for. | permalink

These two make a really cute couple.  I hope we get to see more of them.

Katherine seems to have her share of suitors but I was disappointed she was still giving Agent Byrne the green light to try and woo her.  His tactics against the Savoy's employees were over the line and people with no ties to the mob or criminal activity were made to suffer for his fishing expedition. I was surprised Katherine let him off the hook so easily.

That said, Ralph really needs to do something besides snarl at Katherine whenever they disagree. If he's interested in more than a working relationship then it is past time to make that clear.

We didn't see a lot of Savino  but at least he found a way to take down Gainsley that didn't end with the arrogant rancher being buried in the desert…although something tells me that's still an option.

In the end, with my favorite Vegas couple reunited, I was happy to call the entire episode a win.

Danone Institute teams up with nutrition bodies to examine health effects of yogurt

The Danone Institute International, the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), and the UK-based Nutrition Society (NS) have joined forces to evaluate the state of science surrounding the relationship between yogurt consumption and health.

Through the project the Yogurt Nutrition Initiative for a balanced diet NS, ASN, and the Danone Institute International will examine the health effects of yogurt, encourage new research, and communicate their findings to health care professionals and the public.

The collaborators will hold conferences each year to communicate their findings, and encourage more research.

One of the main focus topics during the first summit will be the impact of regular yogurt consumption on nutrient deficiencies, body weight regulation, and chronic health conditions. The Danone Institute, ASN, and NSwill also examine the nutrient profile of yogurt compared to other dairy foods, and pinpoint populations that may benefit most from yogurt consumption to improve health.

According to the Danone Institute International, which works to develop and distribute scientific knowledge on diet and nutrition, the collaborative agreement with the ASN and NS could help to improve the nutritional profile of yogurt.

We are very enthusiastic to participate in this global collaboration that will contribute to increasing the scientific knowledge around yogurt as part of a healthy diet, said Danone Institute International president, Professor Raanan Shamir.

Former ASN president and professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois, Sharon Donovan, added: Nutrition research continues to shed light on how individual foods and food groups affect health.

This new collaboration will help to define the evidence base for yogurts effects on health promotion and disease prevention and identify areas where more research is needed. This science-based approach aligns well with ASNs mission of advancing nutrition research and knowledge to improve public health and clinical practice worldwide, she added.
