Waste water polluting beaches – NSW oppn

Waste water has bypassed treatment plants and flowed into Sydney beaches eight times in as many weeks, the NSW opposition says, raising questions about the effectiveness of recent upgrades.

Swimmers at pollution hotspots north and south of Sydney have been urged to keep out of the water after recent heavy rainfall.

Opposition water spokesman Walt Secord says hundreds of thousands of litres of untreated water, including sewage overflows, have been allowed to flow into Sydney and Illawarra beaches.

'I acknowledge that we had rains, but these plants were supposed to have been upgraded to respond to such incidents,' he said.

The opposition says eight treatment plants were placed on bypass between February and April, meaning waste water went straight into waterways.

'These waste water treatment plants are coastal ones rather than deep ocean outfalls,' Mr Secord said.

But Sydney Water general manager of service delivery Eric de Rooy says claims that raw sewage was released into beaches are completely untrue.

'These waste water flows received screening, primary treatment and disinfection before being released,' he said in a statement.

'The waste water treatment plant is working as it is designed to do, and operating within the regulations set by the EPA.'

Sydney Water said on Thursday that a partial bypass had been put in place at Warriewood and Cronulla waste water treatment plants following heavy downpours across the city on Wednesday night.

A New Service Based on Artificial Intelligence Will Change the Way You Learn Languages

Lingualia presents Lingu, a virtual language teacher with the power to learn from each and every student and adapt the course to perfectly fit their needs. This state-of-the-art learning system achieves a noticeable increase in motivation, and much faster progress with very little effort.

Valencia, Spain (PRWEB) April 04, 2013

Lingu learns from the user; he studies their behaviour, their progress, the time they have available to learn, and their motivation, and applies that information to the design of completely unique learning experiences.

Sergio Blanco, CEO of Lingualia, points out, At Lingualia, the student isnt forced to adapt to the course; the course adapts to the student. This way, students motivation increases and they achieve a much faster progress with a lot less effort.

Student-focused Learning

The motivation and requirements of every language learner vary dramatically, as does the rate of progression and understanding.

Thats why Lingualia has developed Lingu, a virtual teacher, programmed with artificial intelligence, tailored to each student, with the ability to analyse all aspects of their learning capacities to create a personalised course for each user.

The student learns from their mistakes thanks to the explanations that Lingu provides. This method eliminates the need to follow a strict course which is always the same from student to student and not at all tailored to each persons requirements.

Lingus algorithm, based on artificial intelligence, learns from each student and has the capacity to take decisions in order to personalise the learning process.

Aerospace Industries are Closer to Standardizing Materials Reporting

The International Aerospace Environmental Group (IAEG) is moving forward with the first voluntary, global declarable-substance list for the aerospace industry.

WARRENDALE, Pa. (PRWEB) April 03, 2013

Around the world, regulation is increasing on the use of certain materials in aerospace products, said Christer Hellstrand, IAEG chairman and Boeing director of Environment, Health and Safety. Working at a global, industry-wide level, weve identified the various materials and substances that are relevant for reporting throughout the supply chain and weve created a voluntary standardized approach for this purpose.

These standards are significant because they will enable the supply chain to share information about the chemicals and materials used to manufacture parts for aerospace products. Many suppliers support several companies. Sharing this knowledge can enhance efficiency, thereby lowering costs, and ultimately improve health and the environment.

Other concerns the group is working on include:

This years IAEG conference opened with more than double the number of companies since the group was formally established in June 2011. IAEG now represents more than 50 percent of the total worlds aerospace market.

During the three-day meeting, two new board members were elected: Sally Gestautas of Raytheon and Sandrine Bouttier Stref of Thales. The founding members are: Airbus and EADS, Boeing, Bombardier Aerospace, Dassault Aviation, Embraer, GE Aviation, Northrop Grumman, Rolls-Royce, SAFRAN, United Technologies Corp., and Zodiac Aerospace.

IAEG is a non-profit forum for aerospace companies and their suppliers to develop consensus standards for emerging health and environmental issues. IAEG membership is open to all aerospace companies who are interested in helping continue the development of industry-wide, voluntary consensus standards. For more information visit http://www.iaeg.com or contact Christer Hellstrand at christer.hellstrand(at)boeing(dot)com or Bruno Costes at bruno.costes(at)airbus(dot)com.

Amphenol Aerospace and Datakey Electronics Collaborate to Design Rugged, High Speed, Removable Storage Solution

SIDNEY, N.Y., April 3,2013 /PRNewswire/ --Amphenol Aerospace (NYSE:APH), a global leader in interconnect technologies, has collaborated with Datakey Electronics, manufacturer of rugged, portable memory systems, to provide a rugged, removable storage solution. The result of this collaboration provides designers with a ruggedized USB flash drive and panel-mount receptacle solution.

The Ruggedized Memory Terminal (RMT) integrates components from both corporations. Instead of using a standard USB type A connector, the RMT leverages Datakey Electronics' SR4220PCB receptacle, which is integrated into Amphenol's field-proven MIL-DTL-38999 connector. The receptacle mates with Datakey Electronics' UFX RUGGEDrive memory tokens, which provide USB flash drive functionality, but have a more rugged construction and employ additional security features than consumer flash drives. Amphenol's high speed Oval Contact System (OCS), on the alternate side of the RMT, provides a reliable interconnect system for ruggedized computers and devices.

The SR4220PCB receptacle in the RMT has a cycle life of 50,000 insertion and removal operations minimum. Amphenol's OCS is a high density, high speed, rugged interconnect that withstands a minimum of 500 mating cycles. The MIL-DTL-38999 connector offers the highest performance capabilities for both general duty and severe environment applications. A screw-on cover is used to provide an IP68 seal when the cover is fully mated. The cover can be used both when a UFX token is present or not.

Paul Plitzuweit, Senior Product Manager for Datakey Electronics says, "We are very excited about this partnership, as it gives designers an ultra-rugged flash drive solution without the pitfalls of using a consumer USB receptacle."

Jared Sibrava, Director of Amphenol Aerospace's High Speed Solutions Division says, "Coupling the Oval Contact System, MIL-DTL-38999 connector, and Datakey Electronics' rugged USB drives and receptacles is a good fit for systems integrators as they solve complex system requirements regarding removable storage. The solution has been proven rugged and reliable for many different environments customers may face."

Designed for harsh environment applications, the RMT is ideal for use in the defense and commercial markets. Optional configurations are available.

Sports nutrition : Eating before exercise

While the pre-event meal is a key element to performance, fueling muscles and being well hydrated before exercise sessions will give Marc, Lauren and Anne the edge to train hard throughout the weeks leading up to Bayshore /upnorthlive.com photo

How often do you head out for your training run first thing in the morningbefore breakfast? Should you avoid eating before exercise if you are trying to lose weight? Does eating before exercise leave you feeling shaky, or with an upset stomach? While the pre-event meal is a key element to performance, fueling muscles and being well hydrated before exercise sessions will give Marc, Lauren and Anne the edge to train hard throughout the weeks leading up to Bayshore. Experimenting with food and drinks during training will also help them determine the best timing and tolerance for pre-exercise and pre-race foods.

Goals of nutrition before exercise include:

Fueling your brain, as well as your muscles, gives you mental stamina and focus to optimize training. While your body uses a greater share of fat for fuel while exercising in a fasted state (8 hours since your last meal) compared to doing the same workout after a carb-rich meal or snack, studies show that people are able to exercise harder and for a longer period when they consume carbs before exercise; training without pre-exercise fuel leads to decreased performance and early fatigue.

Overall, being able to exercise longer, at a higher intensity, will result in greater energy use (more calories burned), which is needed to cause fat loss. Consider the goals of your session to decide whether to eat or not before exercise. If your primary goal is to improve performance, have something to eat before exercise. If your primary goal is weight loss, as long as you will do the same amount of exercise (burn the same amount of calories, but over a longer time/distance), it is ok save your meal until after the session.

When to eat

Food eaten before exercise is only useful once it has been digested and absorbed. What and how much you eat affect how quickly you digest and absorb food. This means you need to time your meals and snacks so that the fuel is available during your exercise session. A general guide is to have a meal about 3-4 hours before exercise or a lighter snack about 1-2 hours before exercise. That said, its not always practical to eat a meal 3-4 hours before exercise. If any of the Three Amigos train early in the morning, they should choose a light snack about an hour before, even if it means getting up just a little earlier. For example, a glass of milk or juice and then some fruit or a cereal bar on the way to training can top off fuel stores. If scheduled for their long training run, Marc and Lauren can make up for their smaller carbohydrate intake prior to exercise by drinking a sports beverage during the event or training session.

Retired cop shares secret of longevity

NONAGENARIAN Tony Lee celebrated a momentous milestone in the company of family and friends, and proffered some advice for those seeking to emulate his longevity.

On his 90th birthday, the retired policeman said that being contented and happy about ones existence, leading a clean life, and surrounding oneself with friends, are key to aging gracefully.

Always be happy with what you have and never yearn for other things. Dont look back to the past nor into the future, for your life is now. Live it with no regrets, he said.

Lee, who has been married 64 years to wife Suzanne, 88, still enjoys an active social life, has regular exercise sessions, and spends hours on the computer surfing the Internet.

Each morning, I thank God for my first cup of coffee, the computer that I had to learn using at the age of 75, and a lovely wife who says I spend more time on the device than I do with her.

Weve had many adventures together and I treasure every moment of it, he quipped during the birthday gathering at a restaurant in George Town recently.

He said that longevity has been a blessing, and it is a gift he intends to make the most of. He urged people to cherish the goodness around them for it keeps one young at heart.

There is nothing better to wish for than a long, healthy life. Because good health is your wealth, he added, eagerly looking forward to his 100th birthday.

Lee later went up on stage to serenade his guests with a several melodies before making a wish, blowing out the candles and cutting his elegant birthday cake.

Youngest daughter, Veronica Ann, 57, said her father, who was born in Seremban but moved to Penang after retiring from the police force, had always been the life of the family.

Dorm degrees prove bothersome

By Brantly Houston Posted on April 2, 2013 | News | No comment

Several residents of A.B. Barret Hall have experienced discomfort in their rooms due to inconsistencies with the temperature of the air conditioning.

Kealey Fabian, sophomore biochemistry major from San Antonio, has noticed many problems with the halls air conditioning system.

When its hot outside you walk into the dorm and have to put on a sweatshirt, Fabian said. And during the cold months you walk in and its like walking into Mordor and its really uncomfortable.

Fabian said this problem has been occurring all school year. However, she said not all days are unpleasant.

Sometimes its not running at all and well open our window, she said. Its glorious.

Fabian said she has sent several maintenance requests addressing the problem, even emailing as late as 2 a.m. after being woken up by extreme temperatures. She also said it seems to be a general consensus among the residents that the air conditioning system does not work well.

Caroline Gafford, sophomore biochemistry major from Dallas, has noticed other problems with the system.

This past week it was cold outside in the morning and at night, but in the afternoon it was super hot, Gafford said. Wed walk into our room at night but the air would still be cold even though it was 30 degrees outside and then wed have no way to heat our room.

Its really been kind of frustrating trying to sleep at night because Im either freezing in the morning or burning up in my covers at night, said Aaron Vaught, sophomore vocal music education major from Fort Worth. Its not a very good situation.

About Biologix Hair Inc. and Biologix Hair Science Ltd.

Biologix Hair Inc. (Biologix Hair), together with its wholly owned biotechnology subsidiary, Biologix Hair Science Ltd. (BHS), is focused on realizing the full market potential for its patent-pending hair loss prevention and regeneration treatment - the Biologix Hair Therapy System - and its demonstrated ability to prevent and reverse the effects of alopecia, which plagues hundreds of millions worldwide.

Between mid-2004 and mid-2012, more than 30,000 pre-clinical-trial treatments of Biologix Revive - the essence of the Biologix Hair Therapy System - were administered to 5,000-plus patients in South America suffering with varying degrees of alopecia, as well as people seeking preventive treatment. The participating treatment clinicians subjectively observed and reported that virtually 100% of preventive care clients continued to retain their healthy hair and an estimated 80-85% of the males and 90-plus% of the females treated for hair regeneration experienced significant regrowth of their own natural hair. And among alopecia areata patients, virtually total hair regrowth was observed in 100% of the cases. To date, no negative side effects have been reported.

BHS is currently focused on obtaining FDA approval for its breakthrough hair loss prevention and regeneration therapy and has initiated a research and development program with one of the world's leading medical research universities, the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT). The R&D program, expected to take approximately twelve months to complete, is an important final step before formal clinical trials and the FDA approval process begins.

Additionally, on May 11, 2012, Venable LLP, the Washington-based law firm overseeing the worldwide IP and regulatory approval processes on behalf of BHS, filed a Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) application on behalf of BHS for Biologix Revive in Geneva, Switzerland. The PCT is an international treaty, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), to which 144 countries have as of now contracted, including Canada and the United States.

In particular, biogas plants are discussed to contribute to the spreading of Escherichia coli infections in humans or chronic botulism in cattle caused by Clostridium botulinum. Metagenome datasets of microbial communities from an agricultural biogas plant as well as from anaerobic lab-scale digesters operating at different temperatures and conditions were analyzed for the presence of putative pathogenic bacteria and virulence determinants by various bioinformatic approaches.
Results:
All datasets featured a low abundance of reads that were taxonomically assigned to the genus Escherichia or further selected genera comprising pathogenic species. Higher numbers of reads were taxonomically assigned to the genus Clostridium. However, only very few sequences were predicted to originate from pathogenic clostridial species. Moreover, mapping of metagenome reads to complete genome sequences of selected pathogenic bacteria revealed that not the pathogenic species itself, but only species that are more or less related to pathogenic ones are present in the fermentation samples analyzed. Likewise, known virulence determinants could hardly be detected. Only a marginal number of reads showed similarity to sequences described in the Microbial Virulence Database MvirDB such as those encoding protein toxins, virulence proteins or antibiotic resistance determinants.
Conclusions:
Findings of this first study of metagenomic sequence reads of biogas producing microbial communities suggest that the risk of dissemination of pathogenic bacteria by application of digestates from biogas fermentations as fertilizers is low, because obtained results do not indicate the presence of putative pathogenic microorganisms in the samples analyzed.Source:

Another captivating piece by Italian artist Valentina Formisano! This stop motion animation was created entirely by hand as a didactical book for children to learn about the inner working of the human body. It is inspired by the books of Italian artist and designer, Bruno Munari. I love how each piece of the animation can stand on its own as a beautiful graphic representation of anatomy.
