Check your gear, keep our islands pest clear
The Department of Conservation is appealing to people visiting islands in Wellington Harbour and Kapiti Coast this summer to do their bit to help keep them free of introduced pests.
David Moss, DOC Biodiversity Ranger said the most common way pests such as rodents can get to islands is by stowing away on boats.
Rats or mice can devastate an islands wildlife and have the potential to breed rapidly. It has been estimated that under ideal conditions, a source population of rats could produce 15,000 offspring in one year."
Mr Moss said making sure that rats and mice are not on board when people head out for a day on the water is the most important thing. If the boat is small then a quick scan is generally sufficient. However, with bigger vessels it is sensible to maintain rodent bait stations or traps on board.
By taking this simple step, fishers and boat owners can make all the difference in keeping pests off our precious off shore islands, he said.
It is also important to check boats, packs, clothing and boots for insects and weed seeds before going ashore, and to leave pets behind, including dogs, as they are not permitted on conservation islands. Private boats and kayaks cannot visit Kapiti Island and boats can only land in one place on both Mana and Matiu-Somes Islands. Travellers on commercial boats also need to check their gear.
Some of the most popular visitor destinations in the region, Matiu-Somes and Kapiti Islands are free of pests. These islands provide a safe haven for many of our rarest and most endangered animals such as kiwi, takahe, tuatara, giant weta, hihi (stitchbird) and tieke (saddleback).
At the end of the day it is up to all of us to ensure we dont transport unwanted pests to an island, he said. Checklist: Always check your boat for animal pests before leaving port if you are going to be landing on an offshore island. Always check the gear that is to go ashore for any animals that may be hiding amongst it. Set rat and mouse traps, or lay poison baits, on board boats. Do not leave food lying on board when in port, as animals attracted to your boat may stay on board and become stowaways. Place food in rodent proof containers like chillybins. Please ensure no plants or seeds are introduced onto these islands, as some are free of many weeds which are common on the mainland. Check cuffs and socks for seeds and burrs and remove mud from soles of shoes.

A boat with Taiwanese activists headed for disputed Japanese-controlled islands turned back Thursday after coastguard vessels from the two sides converged and duelled with water cannon.
The boat, carrying seven people including four Taiwanese activists, gave up a plan to land on the East China Sea islands after being blocked by Japanese coastguard vessels as it sailed within 17 nautical miles of the archipelago.
"We fired water cannon at each other," Taiwanese coastguard spokesman Shih Yi-che said of the confrontation.
The disputed islands, in an area where the seabed is believed to harbour valuable mineral reserves, are known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese. Both China and Taiwan claim them.
As the standoff unfolded, three Chinese surveillance vessels were positioned a few nautical miles off, the Taiwanese coastguard said.
It added that it was the first time ships from China had been spotted near a Taiwanese-Japanese incident, and that it had sent a radio message to the three boats to keep their distance in order not to complicate matters.
The incident came at a time of growing regional concern over the intensified friction over the islands between China and Japan, with both Beijing and Tokyo recently scrambling fighter jets to assert their claims to the area.
The Japanese coastguard confirmed that it took action after encountering the Taiwanese vessel.
"Our patrol boat carried out restrictions on the vessel such as blocking its path and discharging water," it said in a statement.
"The vessel left our country's contiguous zone at around 1:30 pm (0430 GMT) and continued sailing west-southwest away from the Senkakus."

A small boat carrying Taiwanese activists trying to reach a group of East China Sea islands at the heart of a territorial dispute has been forced back by the Japanese coastguard.
The activists were sailing towards the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan, Diaoyutai in Taiwan and Diaoyu in China, to install an idol of a goddess.
China and Taiwan both claim the island chain, which is controlled by Japan.
The island row has left ties between Tokyo and Beijing severely strained.
The fishing boat is reported to have been carrying four activists as well as the Taiwanese captain, an Indonesian employee and a news cameraman. It was being escorted by four Taiwanese coastguard vessels.
They left Taiwan in the early hours and reportedly wanted to place the statue of a Taiwanese sea goddess who is traditionally believed to protect fishermen on one of the islands in the group, which lie south of Okinawa and north of Taiwan.
The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says this was seen as placing a symbolic territorial claim on the islands. Video footage of the activists before they left Taiwan showed them chanting "Japan, get out of Diaoyutai" and "Return Diaoyutai".
But as the vessel approached the islands mid-morning the Japanese coastguard issued verbal warnings for it to stop, then used water cannon to force it to turn back.
"Our patrol boat carried out restrictions on the vessel such as blocking its path and discharging water," the coastguard said in a statement.

TULSA, Oklahoma -
One area home health care company is trying to keep its clients from catching the flu.
They call themselves "The Visiting Angels," and they come bearing paper towels and hand sanitizer.
Page Cole is on a mission to stop the spread of the flu before it can begin.
He's with the home health care company, Visiting Angels, which has been dropping off flu prevention kits to its clients.
"We don't look at this as just a nice little marketing gift, this could be life saving for some seniors, it really could," Cole said.
The kits come with hand sanitizer, Vitamin C supplements, disinfectant spray, paper towels, even pens that seniors can use instead of the ones in public places like grocery stores and banksall designed to fend off the flu.
"It's almost like an emergency preparedness kit for bad weather. This is an emergency preparedness kit for illness, and it would be a good thing to prevent that from ever happening," Cole said.
Visiting Angels has about 75 clients in Tulsa and Bartlesville.
Seniors are especially susceptible to the flu, which can lead to pneumonia and even death.

CALGARY Researchers in Calgary have launched the first gene therapy clinical trial in the world for Fabry disease, a rare inherited enzyme deficiency that can shorten the lifespan of people who have it by as much as 40 years.
Researchers will first remove a quantity of stem cells from a Fabry patient's blood. Then a working copy of a new gene will be inserted into the stem cells using a specially engineered virus. During the final phase of the trial, researchers hope to transplant these stem cells back into the donor patient and the new, working copy of the gene will make the missing enzyme.
The clinical trial has been prompted by promising gene therapy results in mice performed in the laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey Medin at the University Health Network in Toronto. Dr. Medin is the principal investigator of the pan-Canada team grant that is supporting this trial.
"We hope this will one day become a form of treatment that effectively cures Fabry disease," says Dr. Aneal Khan, a medical geneticist based at Alberta Children's Hospital, who is leading the Calgary segment of the national project.
"It could also help establish a platform on which we can create gene therapies for other illnesses and establish Calgary as a national leader in this experimental field of interventional genetics."
Although several gene therapies have been used in Canada for cancer, this study will be the first in the country to test a gene therapy for an inherited metabolic disorder.
People with Fabry disease have a change in a gene called GLA and can't make enough enzyme to break down a fatty substance called Gb3. The build-up of Gb3 can lead to problems in the kidneys, heart and brain. About 400 Canadians, including 25 Calgarians, have Fabry disease.
Although the project is headquartered in Toronto, physicians and scientists in Calgary will play a major role in the clinical trial. In particular, the lab at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary has specialized expertise in the stem cell filtering process that will be used for the clinical trial.

Herb OHeron, Canadas own educational futurist, will be providing his insights at the University of the Fraser Valley next week.
OHeron will be speaking on The Value of a Degree as part of the Presidents Leadership Lecture series on Monday, Jan 28 at 4:30 p.m. in Building A, Room 225 (boardroom) at the Abbotsford campus.
He is the first speaker in UFV president Mark Evereds Leadership Lecture Series for the 2013 calendar year.
Herb will be speaking to the value of a degree to an individual and the value of a university to the community said Evered. This speaker is a great fit with the goal of the leadership series to bring speakers that challenge and provoke discussion at the university and in the community.
Although not as famous as American futurist Alvin Toffler, OHeron is doing important work in the field. Working with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), as Director of Research and Policy Analysis, he analyzes statistics and trends in education and makes predictions for the future of post-secondary education in Canada.
Universities across Canada have experienced tremendous growth over the last 30 years. Since 1980 the number of full-time university students has more than doubled, while part-time enrolment is up 16 percent, according to AUCCs Trends in Higher Education publication.
In the same time period, UFV has grown from a small regional college to a fully accredited public university that enrolls over 16,000 students per year. The university now offers more than 100 programs, including two masters degree, 15 bachelors degrees, majors, minors and extended minors in more than 30 subject areas, and more than a dozen trades and technology programs.
But can this growth be sustained in the next 30 years? Many programs are full. Buildings are at capacity.
UFV, like many educational institutions, is wrestling with how to provide a better education with shrinking government resources and increased competition in the marketplace. There are changing demographics, new technologies, emerging labour markets, and globalization to consider. In sum, there is no shortage of challenges for educational institutions.
The AUCC represents 95 Canadian public and private universities and colleges, including UFV, with a mandate to facilitate the development of public policy on higher education and to encourage cooperation among universities and governments, industry and communities.

The Freedom Fest board of directors met in January to discuss the future of the event after looming financial difficulties came to a head in 2012. The result is a more streamlined Freedom Fest that will continue the celebration with less of a financial burden.
The Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau is in charge of planning and executing the event. According to Erin Carrico, executive director of the Murray CVB, Freedom Fest has always struggled financially. Since the beginning, Freedom Fest has never existed to make a profit. However, it has always been a challenge for it to break even. In 2012 we saw sponsorships down and expenses at an all-time high, leaving the event unable to pay its bills, she said.
One of the reasons Freedom Fest struggles each year is it has always been a free event, relying solely on support from sponsors and donations. With the economic downturn we have seen a reduction in sponsorships and advertising, which in turn hurts the bottom line, Carrico said.
"After reviewing Freedom Fest's financial situation, we knew some things had to change, said Deana Wright, chair of the Freedom Fest board of directors.
A plan to cut expenses while also refocusing the event was presented to the board at the January meeting. "I think with this new plan we have narrowed the focus of Freedom Fest. Before, we would try to have a little something for everyone. Now, each event will be targeted and have the potential for more growth," Wright said.
Freedom Fest, which has in the past been a three-day event, will now last only two days. Family Day in the Park, which has been on Sunday, will be moved to Saturday night and centered around the fireworks. The fireworks are shot off at 9:30 p.m. and visible from Central Park. Activities will largely remain the same with inflatables, pony rides, a petting zoo and non-profit vendors. In addition, a local band will perform at the amphitheater and food vendors will be present.
"I am excited about the changes for Saturday night," Wright said. "Since the Freedom Fest concert ended, Saturday night has been lacking in activities. Thousands of people line (U.S.) Hwy. 641 to watch the fireworks, and then they go home. This gives them more options than just a 15-minute fireworks show." She added that the Town and Gown Community Band Concert will still take place before the fireworks, as it did in 2012.
There are other changes being made to Freedom Fest this year to cut expenses. This includes canceling Bacon in the Sun (an amateur barbecue competition), not having inflatables at Kids' Zone Friday night and changing the event guide, which was previously a 28-page book, to a smaller brochure.
"I am confident that these changes will not only solve Freedom Fest's financial difficulties, but also make the event better. I think we will see it grow over the next few years," Wright said.
Freedom Fest 2013 will take place June 28-29. More information can be found by calling the Murray CVB at 759-2199.

The National World War II Museum in New Orleans opened its newest wing, the U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 12. More than 1,000 veterans, active-duty service members, family members and dignitaries attended the two-hour event that featured World War II veterans from every state, the museums Victory Belles singing group, and Salute to Freedom essay contest winners from every state. Master of ceremonies Tom Brokaw, author of The Greatest Generation and a noted television journalist, said the World War II years were a time when the freedom of the world hung in the balance. Americans answered the call to protect that freedom with 16 million men and women serving in uniform and an untold number of citizens of all ages doing their part on the home front, Brokaw said. It is their contributions we honor in the U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center. Brokaw became emotional as he paid homage to those who gave their lives in the battle for freedom. "When these guys enrolled, they went off to war when they were 18, he said. The lives that we have today, they gave to us not just at war, but when they came home they built new industries and went to college, went to school they never asked for credit. U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., said she would continue to work toward raising more funding for the museum. "Our entire delegation across party lines is asking in these tough budget times for the country to honor the story of this greatest generation and to have it told here in the city of New Orleans, Landrieu said. I'm going to get back to Washington to get the $30 million dollars that we need to finish it." The pavilion features a variety of artifacts that comprised the big guns of American military might. These include the B-17E Flying Fortress and B-25J Mitchell bomber, as well as a SBD-3 Dauntless dive-bomber, TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, P-51D Mustang fighter and Corsair F4U-4 fighter. The pavilion also will include a massive wall honoring WWII Medal of Honor recipients and an interactive submarine experience based on the final mission of the USS Tang. Exhibits will employ the newest digital technologies to ensure a thrilling journey into the heart of the American spirit. Other exhibits include: -Warbirds -Vehicles of War -Service and Sacrifice -Arsenal of Democracy -What Would You Do? The What Would You Do? is especially appealing to youngsters and active-duty service members as it puts the visitor into a specific situation faced by leaders in World War II and asks for the guests resolution. National WWII Museum President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Gordon H. Nick Mueller said that opening of the pavilion will provide the nations World War II Museum with more exhibits for its visitors. This is an exciting and emotional event, he said. Activity on the home front was vital to the Allied victory in World War II, and Boeing was at the epicenter of that industrial movement, producing more than 19,000 B-17s, B-29s and other essential aircraft. The B-17 and other artifacts to be displayed in the U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center represent the nations tremendous industrial capacity and American wartime ingenuity. Mueller said The U.S. Freedom Pavilion presents the blend of people, weapons, industrial might and values all reflecting the American spirit required to secure the freedoms called for by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his address to Congress on Jan. 6, 1941: Freedom of speech and expression; freedom of every person to worship God in his or her own way; freedom from want; and freedom from fear. The U.S. Freedom Pavilion speaks to the extraordinary scale and intensity of the American war effort, Mueller said. This is the story of America at war on land, in the air and at sea told in a way that will fully engage the senses, the mind and the heart. Following the ribbon-cutting for the Freedom Pavilion, a second ceremony in the museums main hall announced the opening of a Smithsonian traveling exhibit: World War II Nisei Soldiers and the Congressional Gold Medal. Most JapaneseAmericans who fought in World War II were Nisei, JapaneseAmericans born in the U.S. Shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, JapaneseAmerican men were initially categorized as 4C (enemy alien) and therefore not subject to the draft. On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing military authorities to prescribe military areas in such places and of such extent as he or the appropriate Military Commander may determine, from which any or all persons may be excluded, and with respect to which, the right of any person to enter, remain in, or leave shall be subject to whatever restrictions the Secretary of War or the appropriate Military Commander may impose in his discretion. In March 1942, Lt. Gen. John L. DeWitt, head of the Western Defense Command and Fourth Army, issued the first of 108 military proclamations that resulted in the forced relocation from their residences to guarded relocation camps of more than 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast. In spite of their families interment, a significant number of Nisei Soldiers performed valiantly during World War II, including Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Ha., who recently passed away. Inouye earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism in World War II. The ceremony kicked off a seven-city tour for the exhibit.

A delegation will meet Land Information New Zealand management today in a renewed bid to improve the government department's management of Crown land along the lake.
Linz administers areas such as Deep Bay and Craig Burn which are popular with freedom campers.
In an inspection of the areas on Wednesday, Guardians of Lake Hawea executive member John Taylor and Lake Hawea Community Association vice-president Di Turnbull found evidence human excrement was being left behind when freedom campers departed.
They photographed the evidence for the meeting but noted the amount of excrement was less than in previous years.
Last year, Mr Taylor described both areas as ''a cesspit''.
The pair believed a toilet installed by the Queenstown Lakes District Council at Craig Burn might have been one reason for the improvement, although it was already there last summer when the problem was particularly bad.
Mr Taylor, who has been pushing for improvements for nine years, said he had been advised to use his camera to capture evidence of the problem and he now had an extensive library.
''The only problem is, no-one wants to look at it.''
As he and Ms Turnbull pushed through scrub in search of evidence on Wednesday, they were approached by a freedom-camping German woman, who asked if they were ''looking for something special''.

lessons on eugenics, part 2 (kill your children [so we don #39;t have to])
calenfretts.com in 1974, the eugenicist Henry Kissinger (National Security Advisor at the time) published National Security Study Memorandum 200: Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for US Security and Overseas Interests (NSSM200). this study was adopted as official US policy in 1975. as the title implies, the report discusses the need for population *control* in developing countries. the main form of population *control* endorsed is, of course, abortion. Kissinger supported an interesting method of encouraging countries to engage in abortion, as seen in part 2 of the study: Since population growth is a major determinant of increases in food demand, allocation of scarce PL 480 resources should take account of what steps a country is taking in population control as well as food production. In these sensitive relationships, however, it is important in style as well as substance to avoid the appearance of coercion. in case you missed it, let me spell that out for you: we should give preferential treatment with regards to food and aid to countries which are committed to using abortion as a method of population control. but, we should be sneaky about it! it is important to note that the US refuses to rescind this policy, even after being called upon to do so ever since the report was made public in the early 90s. if something seems familiar about this, its probably because one of Obamas first moves in office was to reinforce this policy of providing aid to abortion ...

lessons on eugenics, part 1 (dont drink the water)
calenfretts.com a study was done 3 years ago stating that 1/3 of male fish in English rivers are turning female due to estrogen-heavy chemicals in the water (similar to drugs given to transgender men). there was concern that it could even be affecting the fertility of men who drink any water from these sources. British mens sperm counts dropped by almost a third between 1989 and 2002 Prime;, the article states, leaving little doubt as to the correlation. flash forward to today, where concerns about the carbon footprint of filtering machines means that the poisons will remain in the vast majority of the British water supply. so the decision has been made, folks. the AlGoreWarming hoax is the cited reason for letting the peoples water supply remain poisoned, and the people go along with it because we have to save the polar bears icecaps from melting in the summer (the fact that they re-freeze in the winter is irrelevant and has nothing to do with reality). Gordon Browns green adviser surely likes that reproduction will be hindered, since he wants a 50% population decrease. at least this is only happening to the Brits, oy? not so fast. Obamas science czar would not only be okay with it, he advocated water sterilization as well as other eugenics methods such as compulsory abortions, forced sterilization, and implanted birth control, in his 1977 book Ecoscience. you see, some of the worlds top minds think the world is overpopulated, and (at least) 90% of humans need to die. of ...

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. Lewis Reynolds didnt know what had been done to him until years later.
After getting married, the Lynchburg man found he couldnt father children. The reason: He had been sterilized at age 13 under a Virginia law with the stated purpose of preventing defective persons from becoming by the propagation of their kind a menace to society.
Unable to have a family, his wife left him.
Reynolds, now 85, journeyed to Richmond this week in support of the Justice for Victims of Sterilization Act (HB1529), which would pay $50,000 each to survivingVirginians who were involuntarily sterilized between 1924 and 1979 under the Virginia Eugenical Sterilization Act.Eugenics was the now-discredited movement that sought to improve the genetic composition of humankind by limiting the reproduction of those deemed its less desirable members.
The Virginia law became a model for similar legislation passed around the country and the world, including Nazi Germany. The law was upheld in the 1927 Supreme Court case Buck v. Bell, in which Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., writing for the majority, famously declared: Three generations of imbeciles are enough.
The Virginia sterilizations, more than 7,000 of them, were performed at six state institutions, including what is now known as Central Virginia Training Center in Lynchburg. When Reynolds was sterilized, it was called the Virginia Colony for the Epileptic and Feeble Minded.
Reynolds was presumed to have epilepsy. As it turned out, he was exhibiting temporary symptoms from having been hit in the head with a rock.
Reynolds married again, and this time the union lasted. His second wife, Delores, died five years ago.
We had a good marriage for 47 years, he said in an interview.
But he has always regretted being unable to father children.

There have been more than just a few questions about Cris Cyborg Santos and her possible move down to 135 pounds for a chance to fight in the UFC and to face women's champ Ronda Rousey.
When recently appearing on UFC Tonight, former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, who serves as one of Cyborg's MMA managers, commented that he knows a cut to 135 pounds for the former Strikeforce champion would be awfully rough. He even mentioned the possibility of a warm-up fight for Cyborg once she makes the move and debuts in the UFC before facing Rousey with the championship on the line.
The man that will be in charge of getting Cyborg down to 135 pounds will be famed MMA nutritionist and weight cutting guru Mike Dolce, and he's excited for the challenge and the chance to start working with a high-level athlete like Santos.
I have every intention of working with Cris Cyborg once her UFC contract is finalized. Right now we're circling the drain, we're waiting for the go ahead, but Cris she's been on vacation in Brazil. If she was here in the United States, she and I already would have been working together. So she'll be back, her contract will be signed hopefully soon, and as soon as she has a date and an opponent, then it's game on, I will be working with Cris Cyborg, Dolce told MMAWeekly.com this week.
Dolce has a history of working with fighters either making a move to a new weight class for the first time, or helping previously troubled athletes cut weight more effectively and in a healthier manner than just sweating it out in a sauna.
He believes his track record is proof enough that he could get Cyborg down to 135 pounds in a healthy way, and she'd be as good at that weight as she ever was in her previous weight class of 145 pounds.
There's a couple ways to answer and the first way is going to be a little less than humble I'm the only guy in the world that can get Cris Cyborg on weight and healthy. I only say that because I have the history. I'm only going to point to my resume when you look at Rampage (Jackson). Rampage was 260 pounds when he came into the fight with Lyoto Machida. He came out there and made 205 pounds easily and he beat Machida. Johny Hendricks is 215 pounds, started working with me, he's beat (Jon) Fitch, (Josh) Koscheck and (Martin) Kampmann. Johny probably is the biggest welterweight in the UFC, and he's destined to be a world champion. Thiago Alves, Chael Sonnen was 233 pounds six weeks before the Michael Bisping fight in Chicago, Dolce explained.
Nobody can say that any of my athletes ever look unhealthy or ever underperform as a result of their weight cut.
Dolce had a chance to meet with Cyborg in Los Angeles before she traveled home to Brazil recently, and he knows the kind of unlocked potential she has inside. He hopes to have the key to unleash the beast, and make Cyborg the best 135-pound fighter on the planet.
She'll be 135 pounds, it will be the healthiest she's been her entire career, and it will be the best performance of her entire career or I would not have taken the job. I can't risk having an athlete underperform as a result of a weight cut. I would never jeopardize an athlete's health. A lot of athletes come to me and they want me to help them drop a weight class or two, and I've turned a lot of huge names down because it's just not safe, it's not healthy, said Dolce.
