Go Nutty Over Health This January: Dr. Mao's Wellness Living

Most people give up their New Years resolutions before January even ends! However, before you give up this year, try to find a few new foods that might keep your health kick on track and maybe even expand your recipe collection. Below are some nuts that can be eaten as a snack or added to a meal as a way for you to stay healthy and increase your longevity for years to come.

Pecans

A nutritionally very balanced food, pecans have a high iron content, making them especially beneficial for women. Pecans are full of phytosterols (plant compounds that decrease bad cholesterol in the body) and they provide 10 percent of the recommended daily amount of fiber, which also benefits cholesterol levels and aids in digestion. Additionally, pecans may help control high blood pressure, reduce the risk of cancer, and defend against neurological disease. They can be a part of weight management programs, but dont eat more than a handful a day, as they are high in calories.

Pine nuts

Pine nuts are not actually nuts at all, but the edible seeds of pinecones. They are very beneficial for heart health because, like nuts, they are high in monounsaturated fats. In addition, the potent antioxidant called pycnogenol protects the vascular endothelial cells) which make up the lining of the heart and blood vessels) from free radical damage. Pycnogenol also helps protect the brain from free radicals, works as an anti-inflammatory, and helps preserve skin structure. Pine nuts can go rancid quickly, but you can extend their life by keeping them in the refrigerator.

Chestnuts

Unlike other nuts and seeds, chestnuts are fairly low in calories and fat, but still contain a wide array of beneficial vitamins and minerals. Very high in fiber, chestnuts can help lower cholesterol levels. Chestnuts rich source of vitamin C protects against free radical damage and bolsters immunity. Of all the nuts, chestnuts contain one of the highest levels of folate. As a nut, it also contains high levels of essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, which benefit heart health. Provided you arent allergic, these crunchy treats will serve you and your longevity well.

'Silver Cloud Diet' Fights Bad Fat With Good Fat

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Jan 28, 2013) - Dr. John Salerno, protg of the late "Atkins Diet" creator, Dr. Robert Atkins, corrects misconceptions about the science of nutrition and losing weight while addressing current state-of-food issues in his new book, "The Silver Cloud Diet," (www.thesilverclouddiet.com).

"Hidden sugar, preservatives and highly processed white starch are what are really causing our health epidemic in the United States," says Salerno, who has been featured in Woman's Day, Men's Health, The Huffington Post, Fox News and is recommended in health celebrity Suzanne Somers' best-sellers. "Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease are killing this country, and it's not because people are eating too many organic natural fats."

The book describes Dr. Salerno's three-step approach to nutrition based on organic, unprocessed foods that are low-glycemic, low in carbohydrates and high in protein and natural fat. His program is also fortified with pure organic nutritional supplements targeted to strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation and destroy free radicals. Dr. Salerno advocates the use of bio-identical hormones, as well as a detox program to jumpstart a healthy diet.

"Dr. Salerno saved my life," writes patient JP from New York City. "My weight had ballooned up to nearly 350 pounds. I was hypoglycemic, had high blood pressure, and was on my way to diabetes. Using The Silver Cloud Diet, I have lost nearly 200 pounds, my blood pressure and sugars are both normal. I feel great. And I can stay on The Silver Cloud Diet for the rest of my life."

The book includes 75 low-carb recipes developed by culinary co-authors Linda West and James Beard, and step-by-step instructions for a healthy lifestyle.

About Dr. John Salerno

A board-certified family physician, Dr. John Salerno has been pioneering complementary medicine for more than 20 years. Best known for his Silver Cloud Diet nutrition program, anti-aging supplements, and natural therapies, Dr. Salerno has served as a clinical preceptor at Yale University School of Medicine for three years and crafted treatment plans to restore human health. His publications and professional studies have made him a popular expert on the physiology and assessment of many complex medical conditions. Dr. Salerno was a protg and colleague of Dr. Robert Atkins and has worked with Hollywood actress/author Suzanne Somers (bioidentical hormone replacement therapy pioneer); actor Steven Cannell; and president of the International Congress of Integrative Medicine, Dr. Hiroyuki Abe.
