Owner hopes stem cell therapy will get dog’s life back

REHOBOTH, Mass. --

A first of its kind procedure is being performed in Massachusetts Monday. Its a stem cell therapy on a dog.

"He can't get comfortable, can't lay down, because of the pain, so he sits up and stares at the wall all night, which is tough to watch," said Bob Cook, Bubbas owner.

Cook of Taunton is talking about his 2-year-old English Bulldog Bubba, who suffers from hip dysplasia.

He said his condition has gotten worse in the last several months. After doing research, he found out about a regenerative stem cell therapy and has been hopeful.

He brought Bubba to the Abbot Animal Hospital in Rehoboth.

"Hopefully we can give these animals relief and increase quality of life and their life span as well, said Dr. Ashraf Gomaa.

Gomaa is the only doctor in our area certified by MediVet America, the company that developed this technology.

After extracting fat from Bubba, it is processed in a machine that basically breaks down the cells to get to the healthy stem cells. The cells are then injected back into Bubba into the area of concern.

"Replacing the bad cells with new cells, pretty advanced technology," Gomaa said.

President Barack Obama Bestows NYU Langone Medical Center’s Jan Vilcek, MD, PhD, with the National Medal of Technology …

NYU Langone Medical Center announced today President Barack Obama named Jan Vilcek, MD, PhD, professor of microbiology at NYU Langone, and co-inventor of the rheumatoid arthritis drug Remicade, a recipient of the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation. This year 11 individuals will receive this medal, the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government upon scientists, engineers, and inventors. He will receive his award from President Obama at a White House ceremony later this year.

Dr. Vilcek joined NYU Langone at the age of 31 as an assistant professor of microbiology. He devoted his entire career to the study of a group of natural regulators of the immune system called cytokines. Dr. Vilcek devoted much of his career to the study of interferons, making contributions to the understanding of their nature and helping develop their clinical applications. In the 1980's, Dr. Vilcek and his colleague, Junming Le, PhD, adjunct associate professor of microbiology at NYU Langone, generated an artificial antibody to one type of cytokine that, in close collaboration with the biotechnology company Centocor (now part of Johnson & Johnson, and recently renamed Janssen Biotech), they then developed into a drug that has become known as infliximab or Remicade. Remicade has since become approved for the treatment of Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It is estimated that to date over two million patients have been treated with Remicade in the United States and abroad.

Using funds due to him for his role in the development of Remicade, Dr. Vilcek and his wife Marica F. Vilcek have generously given more than $120 million to NYU Langone Medical Center to fund scholarships, research, and the new medical student residence hall at NYU School of Medicine. Their ongoing support is an outward display of their deep gratitude for the many opportunities the medical center has provided Dr. Vilcek as his intellectual home.

History recounts Alexander the Great's search for a restorative spring, and Hollywood managed to age Brad Pitt backwards in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." But the true fountain of youth may lie in your own genetic code, according to a study published Thursday.

An offshoot of the receptor gene dopamine which has been linked to the pursuit of social, physical, and intellectual activity is more often found in those who live long lives than those who don't, scientists at the University of California, Irvine, and Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York found.

"Its been well documented that the more youre involved with social and physical activities, the more likely youll live longer. It could be as simple as that," Robert Moyzis, PhD, professor of biological chemistry at UC Irvine, said in a press release. While the genetic variant may not directly influence longevity, it is associated with personality traits that have been shown to be important for living a longer, healthier life," he noted.

The particular genetic trait studied, referred to as the DRD4 7R allele, appears to modify the effect of dopamine, which in turn appears to enhance a person's ability to respond to his or her surroundings, according to the research published in The Journal of Neuroscience. The allele is found predominantly in people over the age of 90 and, separately, associated with with longer life in mice.

Scientists examined the genetic makeup of 310 participants from The 90+ Study, a 2003 body and mind analysis of the oldest of the old in the United States. When compared with those aged 7 to 45, results revealed a 66 percent increase of DRD4 7R presence among the 90+ elderly, which was significantly associated with elevated physical activity. Additionally, mice lacking the genetic relative experienced a 7 to 9.7 percent drop in life expectancy when compared to those with the variant.

Even though a simple chromosomal happenstance can raise your likelihood of long life, if not eternal youth, Dr. Moyziz emphasized the importance of exercise in promoting one's optimal health and longevity. Characterization and genomic analysis of kraft lignin biodegradation by the beta-proteobacterium Cupriavidus basilensis B-8

Background:
Lignin materials are abundant and among the most important potential sources for biofuel production. Development of an efficient lignin degradation process has considerable potential for the production of a variety of chemicals, including bioethanol. However, lignin degradation using current methods is inefficient. Given their immense environmental adaptability and biochemical versatility, bacterial could be used as a valuable tool for the rapid degradation of lignin. Kraft lignin (KL) is a polymer by-product of the pulp and paper industry resulting from alkaline sulfide treatment of lignocellulose, and it has been widely used for lignin-related studies.
Results:
Beta-proteobacterium Cupriavidus basilensis B-8 isolated from erosive bamboo slips displayed substantial KL degradation capability. With initial concentrations of 0.5--6 g L-1, at least 31.3% KL could be degraded in 7 days. The maximum degradation rate was 44.4% at the initial concentration of 2 g L-1. The optimum pH and temperature for KL degradation were 7.0 and 30[degree sign]C, respectively. Manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase (Lac) demonstrated their greatest level of activity, 1685.3 U L-1 and 815.6 U L-1, at the third and fourth days, respectively. Many small molecule intermediates were formed during the process of KL degradation, as determined using GC-MS analysis. In order to perform metabolic reconstruction of lignin degradation in this bacterium, a draft genome sequence for C. basilensis B-8 was generated. Genomic analysis focused on the catabolic potential of this bacterium against several lignin-derived compounds. These analyses together with sequence comparisons predicted the existence of three major metabolic pathways: beta-ketoadipate, phenol degradation, and gentisate pathways.
Conclusion:
These results confirmed the capability of C. basilensis B-8 to promote KL degradation. Whole genomic sequencing and systematic analysis of the C. basilensis B-8 genome identified degradation steps and intermediates from this bacterial-mediated KL degradation method. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for research into the mechanisms of lignin degradation as well as a practical basis for biofuel production using lignin materials.Source:
