Gazette.Net: Libertarians will appear on Maryland ballot

The Maryland Libertarian Party will offer a full slate of candidates for federal office this November, including nominees for each of Marylands eight seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The partys certification, which required more than 10,000 signatures, was confirmed last week by the State Board of Elections.

This is our third general election where weve run close to a full slate for federal office, said Robert Johnston, the partys state chairman. Johnston credited the growing popularity of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R) of Texas and dissatisfaction with Americas recent history of wars and government bailouts with pushing libertarian principles into the mainstream.

In addition to a presidential ticket featuring former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and running mate Jim Gray, a retired California judge, the Maryland Libertarian slate will include Senate candidate I. Dean Ahmad of Bethesda, who is challenging Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin (D).

The partys other candidates include congressional hopefuls Muir Boda of Salisbury, who is running in the states 1st Congressional District; Leo Dymowski of Dundalk in District 2; Paul Drgos of Pasadena in District 3; Scott Soffen of Ellicott City in District 4; Arvin Vohra of Bethesda in District 5; Nickolaus Mueller of Baltimore in District 6; Ronald Owens-Bey of Baltimore in District 7 and Mark Grannis of Chevy Chase in District 8.

In 2008, 7,040 Libertarian voters turned out for the presidential election, while 3,140 turned out for the gubernatorial election in 2010, according to reports from the State Board of Elections.

Judge: Libertarian should be on Iowa ballot

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -

A judge says Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson should be listed on the Iowa ballot in November.

Polk County District Court Judge Arthur Gamble says in a ruling filed Tuesday that Libertarians fulfilled requirements of Iowa law to get their candidate on the ballot.

Two Iowa voters last week asked Gamble to review the decision of a panel of three state officials that allowed Johnson on the ballot. The panel says in its decision that Iowa's law isn't clear in its definition of a caucus.

Libertarians say they held a caucus at the Iowa State Fair to get Johnson the ballot. The challengers say there was no caucus.

An appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court is expected but time is running out. Ballots must be printed by Thursday.

Ron Paul: Libertarian Johnson is “wonderful”

Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul has yet to endorse in the race for president, but is showering praise on the long shot Libertarian Party candidate, ex-New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson.

I think hes wonderful, and I think hes doing a good job and people should look at him and every individual should make up his own mind, Paul, who sought the Republican nomination, told Fox News.

But Jesse Benton, who directed Pauls 2012 presidential campaign, told the Daily Caller that Paul will not endorse Gary Johnson.

Still, the sound bite to Fox News has become part of a Gary Johnson video in which former Paul supporters sing Johnsons praises. Paul was the Libertarians candidate for president in 1988, between two stints in Congress as a Republican.

Paul supporters are continuing to fight for power in the Republican Party, and the congressmans son, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, has staked his future in the GOP and spoke to its convention last week.

But Ron Paul voice dissatisfaction with Mitt Romneys convention acceptance speech.

I remain very very skeptical of hearing anything that will change the course of history, he told Bloomberg News. There was no talk of the Federal Reserve. One of the engines of spending is militarism and empire and he enhanced. He was pushing it.

Johnson served two terms as governor of New Mexico, as a Republican. He was briefly a candidate for the 2012 GOP nomination, but later sought and won the Libertarians nod. Johnson is an outspoken critic of the War on Drugs and advocates legalization of cannabis.

Billionaire oilman David Koch ran for vice president on the Libertarians 1980 ticket, but this year is spending and raising as much as $400 million to back Republican candidates.

Dr. Murray Feingold: Animal genetics help scientists understand diseases

Not only have great strides been made in human genetics but also in animal genetics. This is important because such genetic information is not only helpful to the animal, but it frequently can also be applied to humans.

A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine discussed how genetic research from one type of animal, the dog, has been helpful in better understanding the genetics of certain inherited disorders that are present in both dogs and humans.

It is generally easier to do genetic research on dogs than on people. Dogs reproduce many litters, therefore, more animals are available to study.Compared with dogs who are bred much closer, purebreds, there is more genetic heterogeneity present in humans. This results in a greater number of uncontrolled variables being present in people than in dogs. Such genetic heterogeneity or variables can make it more difficult to interpret the results of genetic studies.

There are many genetic disorders that affect the bones of dogs. Hip dysplasia is frequently found in larger dogs.

Another condition that affects the bones and is also present in both humans and dogs is chondrodysplasia. About 20 breeds of dogs have this condition and as a result they have disproportionately short legs. Examples are dachshunds, corgis and basset hounds.

By studying dogs that are affected with chondrodysplasia, researchers were able to uncover the gene that is responsible for this skeletal abnormality and also the chromosome where it is located.

This information is now being applied to patients with this condition by the geneticists who care for them.

Genetic studies are now underway on dogs who have other human conditions such as cancer, epilepsy, lupus erythematosus and narcolepsy, to name just a few.

But as gene research on humans has been helpful in understanding genetic diseases in people, the same is true of gene research involving animals.

Determining the genetic cause of a disease, be it a human or an animal, brings researchers one big step closer to finding ways to treat and prevent the disorder.

No-show health care caucus

CHARLOTTE, N.C. The Republicans call them the #ReplaceObamacareDemocrats.

Here in Charlotte, they might be called the No-Show Health Care Caucus.

They are 10 Democrats running for Congress whom the National Republican Campaign Committee has identified as particularly vulnerable on President Barack Obamas health care reform law.

So vulnerable that they opted to stay home and campaign this week rather than come to their partys convention.

So vulnerable that most of them wouldnt even talk about the health care law by phone.

One of the Democrats California Rep. John Garamendi was at least willing to speak up for the law long-distance. Im not backing away from it. This is an issue I want to talk about, and do talk about, he said by telephone from his northern California district. Hes home, he says, because redistricting has forced him into a tough and expensive reelection race.

The rest, though, are keeping their silence.

Their absence from the convention is a counterpoint to the messaging thats likely to come out of Charlotte, where at least some of the speakers are expected to remind viewers of the popular parts of the law and hit Republicans for trying to take them away. It may also be a commentary on the declining relevance of the huge national political gatherings: The voters arent in Charlotte, either.

Garamendi and the other nine Democrats identified by the NRCC dont have all that much in common, other than the fact that the House Republicans want to beat them and think antipathy to the health care law in these districts can help woo voters and raise money.

Heres the deal: These 10 Democrats are against the full repeal of Obamacare, an NRCC website says. In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision, Republicans must retire each of them. But we need your help. Even $3 will go a long way. The ReplaceObamacareDemocrats site also promises matching funds, up to $5,000 per candidate in these contested races.NRCC spokesman Paul Lindsay said television ads have gone up against three of them so far.

Health-care costs hit the elderly hard, diminish financial wellbeing

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) The protection of the savings of the elderly -- one of the primary goals of Medicare -- is under threat from a combination of spiraling healthcare costs and increased longevity. As the government attempts to reduce Medicare costs, one suggestion is that the elderly could pay a larger proportion of the costs of their healthcare. But exactly how much would this be and what impact would it have on their finances?

A new study by Amy Kelley at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and her colleagues, funded by the National Institute on Aging, aims to identify the portion of wealth Medicare beneficiaries spend on healthcare costs in the last five years of life. Their work appears online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, published by Springer.

Medicare provides nearly universal health care coverage to the population over 65. However it does not pay for everything. There are co-payments and deductibles, and more importantly, homecare services and non-rehabilitative nursing home care, which are not covered. If proposals suggest the elderly should make even larger contributions to care, it is important to know more about patients' out-of-pocket spending under the current Medicare program.

The authors analyzed data from 3,209 individuals with Medicare coverage included in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) from 2002-2008. They measured total out-of-pocket healthcare expenditures in the last five years of life, and looked at these costs as a percentage of total household assets. More than three quarters of households spent at least $10,000, with spending for all participants averaging $38,688 in the last five years of life. Even more shocking was the fact that a quarter of participants made an average contribution of $101,791, and the same number spent more than their total household assets on healthcare.

Kelley and colleagues note that the amount spent on healthcare varied widely with the type of illness suffered, with dementia costing the most money. Out-of-pocket spending for individuals or their spouses dying with dementia was more than twice the average for dying from gastrointestinal disease or cancer. The majority of these costs are related to nursing home expenses which accounted for 56 percent of average spending in those suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Thus far, attempts to promote legislation to help with long-term care requirements have all been deemed too expensive. Until someone comes up with a financially viable scheme, the authors speculate that the financial outlook for the elderly in coming decades is discouraging. They conclude that, "as more baby boomers retire, a new generation of widows or widowers could face a sharply diminished financial future as they confront their recently-depleted nest egg following the illness and death of a spouse."

Author argues U.S. must lead way on bioengineering

Greg Stock wrote a book about the future of human genetic engineering. (Photo courtesy of Greg Stock.)

While perhaps not yet a majority many parents says they would bioengineer their children if they could, to create the perfect, or more perfect child. Now, that parental dream is closer to reality, but no one is quite sure what the implications may be.

Nearly a decade after the human genome was decoded, scientists are only now beginning to understand its implications.

One of the leading thinkers in this field is the biotech entrepreneurGregory Stock. A biophysicist by training, his 2002 bookRedesigning Humans: Our Inevitable Genetic Futuremakes the case that full-scale genetic engineering is on the way whether we like it or not.

And, Stock believes, if the U.S. doesnt lead the way in developing those advances, other nations will.

Between a third and two-thirds of the population and even higher if you look at China or Thailand and other eastern cultures of parents say if they could enhance the genetics of their children, enhance their either cognitive or physical capabilities, they would absolutely do it," he said.

But engineering traits to improve people remains a thorny issue.

It sounds so compelling, take out a little bit of this, that, its going to be the best of you, Stock said. But actually, we don't have a clue what creates exceptional capabilities."

While Stocks attitude is full-speed ahead, he admits, its going to get weird."

Millennials Are 'Generation Screwed,' Futurist Argues

September 4, 2012|1:39 pm

"They've racked up that debt and they can't pay it because they can't get a job. That's a pretty good definition of getting screwed," Joel Kotin said in an interview on NPR's "Tell Me More."

Kotin is distinguished presidential fellow in urban futures at Chapman University, Orange, Calif. His newest book is The Next Hundred Million: America in 2050.

No generation has suffered more from the Great Recession than millennials, typically defined as those born after 1980, Kotin wrote in a July 15 Newsweek article. Between 2005 and 2010, median net worth fell 37 percent for those under 35 but only 13 percent for those over 65, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Kotin also notes a Pew Research Center study showing that the median net worth of a baby boomer (65 and older) household is $170,494, 42 percent higher than it was in 1984, but the median net worth of a millennial household has declined 68 percent to $3,662.

Since millennials have less work experience than older generations, they have the highest unemployment rate, making wealth accumulation and debt repayment difficult.

Follow us

At the same time, older generations are saddling millennials with a tremendous amount of public debt. This week, the national debt alone is expected to surpass $16 trillion. Public debt from programs such as Social Security and Medicare at the national level and public employee pensions at the state and local level transfer wealth from the young to the old.

In addition to the public debt that will limit their government's abilities to deal with future crises, millennials are accumulating large amounts of personal debt, mostly in the form of student loans and credit card debt. Student loans now average $27,000 and the average college student has $12,700 in credit card debt, Kotin notes.

Additionally, while millennials are often encouraged to go to college, there are not enough jobs that require a college degree. Many college graduates of the millennial generation, therefore, end up working in a job that does not require a college degree. They have college loan debt, but they do not have a college graduate salary to help them pay off that debt. About 16 percent of bartenders and parking attendants have a college degree, Kotin pointed out.

Internet freedom, cybersecurity land in 2012 Democratic National Platform

Democrats have included Internet freedom and cybersecurity as important issues in the 2012 Democratic National Platform.

As expected, the Democrats have included Internet freedom as one of the partys many primary provisions in the 2012 Democratic National Platform. Cybersecurity is also included in the platform, released late Monday ahead of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, which kicks off in Charlotte, North Carolina, today.

Inclusion of Internet freedom in the Democrats platform was first revealed by President Barack Obama during his Ask Me Anything public interview on Reddit last week. Obamas revelation came soon after the GOP released its own stance on Internet freedom in the 2012 Republican Party Platform.

While the Republicans focused on how they plan to address open Internet issues in the future through opposition to the Federal Communications Commissions Net neutrality rules, opposition to changes in the Internet governance model through the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), and support for civil liberties and personal privacy on the Web the Democrats instead vaguely outline what the Obama administration has already done to preserve the open Internet, along with further promises to oppose the extension of intergovernmental controls of the Internet through the ITU.

Here is the Democrats Internet freedom position, in full:

The Obama administration has led the world to recognize and defend Internet freedom the freedom of expression, assembly, and association online for people everywhere through coalitions of countries and by empowering individuals with innovative technologies. The administration has built partnerships to support an Internet that is secure and reliable and that is respectful of U.S. intellectual property, free flow of information, and privacy. To preserve the Internet as a platform for commerce, debate, learning, and innovation in the 21st century, we successfully negotiated international Internet policymaking principles, support the current multi-stakeholder approach to Internet governance, and oppose the extension of intergovernmental controls over the Internet.

In another part of the Democrats platform, entitled Out-innovating the Rest of the World, the party makes these key assertions:

President Obama has committed to ensuring that 98 percent of the country has access to high-speed wireless broadband Internet access. We are finding innovative ways to free up wireless spectrum and are building a state-of-the-art nationwide, interoperable, public safety network. President Obama is strongly committed to protecting an open Internet that fosters investment, innovation, creativity, consumer choice, and free speech, unfettered by censorship or undue violations of privacy.

The administration is vigorously protecting U.S. intellectual property our technology and creativity at home and abroad through better enforcement and innovative approaches such as voluntary efforts by all parties to minimize infringement while supporting the free flow of information. As technology advances, we will continue to work with all stakeholders to protect the security of the nation and its knowledge assets, U.S. intellectual property, the functioning of fair and competitive markets, and the privacy, free expression, and due process rights of Americans.

Chuck Norris: ‘Our great country and freedom are under attack’ — VIDEO

Chuck Norris loves freedom more than you.

He loves it so much, in fact, that hes appearing in his own political ad, alongside his wife, Gena. The commercial features the couple calling on their evangelical brothers and sisters to get to the voting booths this November. The couple name-check Edmund Burke and Ronald Reagan, and urge freedom-loving Americans to get to the polls to thwart socialism or something much worse. Dun dun duuuun.

The ad doesnt specifically endorse Mitt Romney by name (and Norris himself threw his support behind Newt Gingrich in February), but its obvious what Norris wants anyone not wanting a roundhouse kick to the face to do. Gena tells viewers, It is estimated that in the 2008 election, 30 million evangelical Christians stayed home on voting day and Obama won the election by 10 million votes.

Ukrainian Government Will Secure The Freedom of Press – President Yanukovych

KYIV, Ukraine, September 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Creating favorable conditions for the development of the freedom of press in Ukraine is the main task of the state government as far as national media is concerned. This was stated by the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych in his speech at the 64thWorld Newspaper Congress and 19thWorld Forum of Editors in Kyiv (September 2-5, 2012). "The development of free press should be efficient, independent of any kinds of control," said Yanukovych.

The buildup of free media space and market in Ukraine is one of the key priorities of the state policy, emphasized Yanukovych. Political forces in Ukraine, even the opposing ones, agree that the only possible way of the country's development is democratic, with the freedom of speech as its core value. Ukraine managed to demonstrate a significant progress in acquiring the freedom of speech despite the heavy Soviet heritage. In the years of its independence the country has gone from total censorship to an open society.

The development of freedom of speech, however, can be achieved by the efforts of both - the government and the journalists. It should be noted that denationalization of printed media in the country is being conducted in accordance with Ukraine's commitments to PACE.

Ukrainian government will also work on securing favorable economic conditions for the printed media market, for only economically independent media can be free of any kind of control. Among other steps, the government will preserve the VAT relief for the mass media, stated Ukraine's President at the opening ceremony.

To reiterate the point of the freedom of speech in Ukraine, there was a group of people holding up placards aimed at Yanukovych during his speech. "They were not discredited and thrown out of the room, they were allowed to stay there throughout the speech of the head of state," commented the expert on media Garbis Kesisoglu, Hrriyet Gazetecilik ve Matbaacilik, participant of the Congress.

World Newspapers Congress in Kyiv will host the speakers, working for Dow Jones, Forbes, Guardian, Mail, New Delhi, The New York Times, Schibsted, Singapore Press Holdings, The Sunday Times, The Times, The Wall Street Journal, Die Zeit, and numerous others.

In October 2011, Kyiv hosted another journalist event - the 7th Global Investigative Journalism Conference.
