September 10, 2012 (Bronx, NY) Social media is increasingly popular but engaging in its proper use can prove confusing and challenging especially in the medical and healthcare arenas. Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University has been awarded a two-year grant to educate faculty members and medical students on using social media appropriately and effectively. Einstein is one of four medical schools in the United States to be selected for the 2012 Education and Training to Professionalism Initiative by the Institute on Medicine as a Profession (IMAP) and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.

According to the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, 66 percent of online adults use social networking sites. Yet a survey of U.S. medical schools deans found that 60 percent of schools reported incidents of unprofessional content posted on the Internet by their students.

"The next generation of doctors needs to understand how social media can be a double-edged sword," said principal investigator Elizabeth Kitsis, M.D., M.B.E., who is director of bioethics education and assistant professor of epidemiology & population health and of medicine at Einstein. "On the one hand, it can be a great way to provide personalized medical education for patients. However, great attention must be paid to maintaining the principles of professionalism, such as privacy and confidentiality of the physician-patient relationship." Accordingly, the title of the grant is "Social Media and Medical Professionalism: Perfect Match or Perfect Storm?"

"Since the current generation of medical educators may not share the same familiarity with social media as our students, our program first focuses on bridging that gap with a comprehensive faculty development program on social networking," explained Martha Grayson, M.D., co-investigator and Einstein's senior associate dean for medical education. "But our overarching goal is to teach medical students how they can use social media in a way that will benefit patient care while maintaining professional standards."

As part of the core student curriculum, first-year medical students will analyze their social media footprints, noting on-line postings that could be perceived as unprofessional, such as improper photos or the use of inappropriate language. Second-year medical students will repeat the process, highlighting changes in their social media presence. As part of a clinical skills course on patient interaction and taking patient histories, first- and second-year students will learn how to respond to possible social networking situations, such as a patient asking to become "Facebook friends."

Third- and fourth-year medical students will interview Bronx community members in order to assess how the local patient population uses social networks and how online communication might help improve patient health.

"Ultimately, the research into how our patients use these tools will help us develop a social media curriculum that can be integrated into Einstein's medical education program," said Dr. Grayson.

Family Medicine Center Opens at West Kendall Baptist Hospital

West Kendall Baptist Hospitals new Family Medicine Center is now open, providing area residents with high-quality primary and preventive care.West Kendall residents can now turn to the Baptist Health Medical Group Family Medicine Center for all routine care needs such as physical examinations, flu and allergy shots, non-emergency illnesses and injuries, chronic disease management and well-child visits. TRENDING: Spoiler alert: Poll finds small following for Libertarian candidate

Washington (CNN) Gary Johnson's poll numbers may not give him much-of-a shot at winning the presidency, but in the latest CNN/ORC Poll, he is registering enough of a following to possibly tip the balance in an increasingly close election.

Three percent of likely voters responded that they would vote for Johnson, the Libertarian Party's candidate for president, in November. That number is slightly higher among registered voters, with 4% identifying with the former governor of New Mexico.

Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.

The poll also finds that Johnson's inclusion, along with the Green Party's candidate Jill Stein, hurts Republican candidate Mitt Romney more than it does President Barack Obama.

Obama leads Romney 52% to 46% when Romney and Obama are the only candidates in question, but Romney's support goes down three percentage points with the inclusion of the third party candidates. Obama's support only drops one point.

"The inclusion of the two minor-party candidates turns a six-point margin for President Obama into an eight-point lead," said Keating Holland, CNN's Polling Director. Since third party candidates are typically not on the ballot in all 50 states, those numbers can be slight deceiving when relating them to the support the candidates will receive on Election Day.

Johnson, who first ran as a candidate for the Republican Party, dropped out of the Republican race and accepted the nomination from the Libertarian Party on May 5, 2012.

The Johnson campaign says they don't see their candidacy as a Republican spoiler and argues that the Johnson's appeal is more important when looked at on a state-by-state.

"Generally, in places like Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada," said Joe Hunter, Johnson campaign spokesperson, "it appears that Governor Johnson's appeal comes from folks that supported Obama in 2008 and are now disillusioned with the president."

Libertarian candidate running for HD9 seat

CHEYENNE -- Libertarian candidate Charles Kenworthy said lowering taxes would be his top priority if he is elected to the state Legislature.

Taxes are the biggest issue to me, he said. To me, taxes are no different than someone coming up to you with a gun and saying you owe me this and then taking it away from you.

Kenworthy is the Libertarian nominee in the House District 9 race.

The first-time candidate said he was reluctant to enter the race, but he said he joined when he was asked by the Libertarian Party state chairman.

He said he also wanted to ensure voters had a choice to vote for someone who would stop government from infringing into areas where government does not belong.

I believe Libertarians are something that are needed right now, he said. We are such a minor party, and some people dont even believe we are for real.

I believe the two-party system is not enough.

Kenworthy said one type of tax that could be reduced is personal property taxes on property other than real estate.

We pay taxes on things we buy, and usually that is a good thing, he said. But (other than real estate) you shouldnt have to continue paying taxes on those things every year.

But he said he doesnt oppose all taxes.

Islands Stay hotels expand nationwide

CEBU, Philippines - Taking advantage of the Philippines robust growth in tourism, Islands Group is rolling out its national expansion for its Islands Stay Hotel brand, starting with the opening of a Makati-based facility, as well as in Palawan.

The chain of Islands Stay hotels, owned by Cebu-based Islands Group, is now starting its national expansion tapping the franchise concept strategy.

Islands Group president Jay P. Aldeguer, announced that the no-frill hotel brand will have its presence in major tourism and business districts in the Philippines, including Makati, in Metro Manila, and in tourism hot spotPalawan.

This is just the beginning of the brands extensive expansion plan, penetrating the potential areas in the Philippines, specifically to those areas where tourism is expected to thrive further.

Islands Stay Hotels, unique concept of providing cheaper alternative for room accommodation has successfully hit the tourists market, both local and foreign travelers, he said.

The company started its first hotel facility in Cebu located at Archbishop Reyes Avenue, adjacent to Cebu Business District (formerly Cebu Business Park), with 18 rooms, immediately followed by its 42-room hotel in Mactan, near the Mactan International Airport.

Aldeguer targets to open up at least 300 value-chic, no-frills accommodations within Metro Cebu, as well as other parts of the country.

Considered as the countrys first value-chic hotel chainIslands Stay Hotel is modeled after the new trend of no-frills accommodations. Islands Stay may be based on a new concept in the Philippines, but its already starting to become popular internationally. Such a trend pays attention to the new kind of travelerresourceful and value-oriented.

Islands Stay concentrates on pure and simple accommodations without the unnecessary fuss that result to high room rates hidden costs.

Its a similar concept to low cost airlines finding that meals on the plane are one of the more practical things to do away with, in turn passing on the savings to the customers, Aldeguer said.

Mitt Romney On Obamacare- ‘I’m Not Getting Rid Of All Of Health Care Reform’ – Video

09-09-2012 15:54 Mitt Romney On Obamacare- 'I'm Not Getting Rid Of All Of Health Care Reform' WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney said on Sunday that if he were elected president he would keep portions of President Barack Obama's signature health care law, a seemingly abrupt turn on an early campaign promise. "Well, I'm not getting rid of all of health care reform," the former Massachusetts governor said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press." "Of course there are a number of things that I like in health care reform that I'm going to put in place. One is to make sure that those with pre-existing conditions can get coverage. Two is to assure that the marketplace allows for individuals to have policies that cover their family up to whatever age they might like. I also want individuals to be able to buy insurance, health insurance, on their own as opposed to only being able to get it on a tax advantage basis through their company." The comments mark the latest chapter in Romney's tortured history with respect to federal health care reform. The Republican presidential nominee once envisioned the health care plan he passed in Massachusetts as a model for the nation. As a candidate for president in 2012, however, he has pledged to repeal the entirety of Obama's Affordable Care Act, a law very much based on Romney's Mass-Care model. In his "Meet the Press" interview, Romney again pledged repeal of the law. But the suggestion that he would pass some of its individual provisions later in his term ...

Tories call for end to regional health organizations

The Progressive Conservatives are writing a new prescription for Ontario's cash-strapped health care system, starting with a change in who's making decisions about how billions of dollars are spent across the province.

The province should abolish regional organizations that decide where the money goes locally and instead rely on 30 to 40 "community hubs" created from existing hospital corporations and staffed by volunteer boards, the Tories said Monday.

The 14 Local Health Integration Networks set up by the Liberals, as well as the Tory-created Community Care Access Centres, aren't working and haven't been able to hit most of their targets, said Opposition Leader Tim Hudak.

The province should get rid of them, along with 2,000 "middle managers," and use that money to hire more doctors and nurses, he said.

"The sad reality is, if you have a loved one who's in the health-care system, far too often you've got to fight like hell to get anything done," Hudak said.

"We're going to change that. And we're going to put patients not bureaucrats at the centre of our health-care system."

Heath care now consumes nearly half of every dollar spent by the government, which is facing a $15-billion deficit.

More money is being spent on health care, but the government isn't achieving the results for the money it's taking, Hudak said. His party's "bold new ideas" would put patients first, create jobs and help grow the economy.

"This is not about a new coat of paint on an old system," Hudak said. "It's fundamental reform to take out layers of bureaucracy, invest in patient care instead and bring decisions closer to the communities where people actually live."

The Tories also want to accelerate patient-centred funding where hospitals get money for every service they perform and reduce the size of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

GEN reports on ocular therapeutics targeting the retina

Public release date: 10-Sep-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: John Sterling jsterling@genengnews.com 914-740-2196 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc./Genetic Engineering News

New Rochelle, NY, September 10, 2012-- Therapies for retinal diseases are expected to overtake those for glaucoma by 2014, reports Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN). Because current retinal disease treatments only improve vision for six to eight weeks, there is a critical need for new remedies, according to a recent issue of GEN.

"As increasing numbers of baby-boomers continue to grow older, many will have to deal with eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration," said John Sterling, Editor-in-Chief of GEN. "Some estimates put the current AMD and diabetic retinopathy drug segment of the market at $3 billion, and this is expected to increase to about $5 billion in two years."

Standard therapy has been Genentech's VEGF inhibitors Lucentis and the off-label use of Avastin. Regeneron, in collaboration with Bayer HealthCare, is challenging these drugs with a similar VEGF inhibitor, Eyela. The FDA approved the drug last November for wet AMD.

In another approach, Acucela is in Phase II trials using visual cycle modulators to lighten the metabolic load on the retina by reducing the activity of the rod visual system. This protects the retina from light damage, improves retinal vasculature, and reduces the accumulation of A2E and other retinal-related toxic by-products.

GlaxoSmithKline has two drugs in Phase II trials for ocular therapy: darapladib, an oral Lp-PLA2 inhibitor for diabetic macular edema, and Votrient, a multi-kinase angiogenesis inhibitor in eye drop form for AMD. Early-stage work also is under way for neovascular AMD, dry AMD, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macula edema, uveitis, and glaucoma, as well as for technologies for drug delivery.

Tito Ortiz Isn't Retired, He's Just Graduated From Fighting

A lot of people were taken aback recently when Cris Cyborg Santos manager said that he believed a Cyborg vs. Ronda Rousey bout would eventually take place, just not at 135 pounds.

It wasnt so much the rhetoric about the fight, but more so who it was saying those words. And that would be Tito Ortiz, who now claims Cyborg among his charges under his new management company, Primetime 360.

Ortizs career spans a time when fighters were lucky to be making in the four-figures for a fight to now, where it isnt uncommon for those at the top to actually bump up into seven-digit paydays.

He believes that he had a lot to do with progressing the sport to that point, but also has the experience of building up his brand and other business interests so that fighting wasnt the be-all, end-all to his life. Ortiz didnt necessarily have to make millions and millions of dollars from his fight career in order to sustain himself once he stepped out of the Octagon for the final time.

During my whole career, I made mistakes. I made positive and negative things to get me to where I am today. I want to go out and find the next generation fighters. Im really going to take this managing stuff by storm. I really want to battle for fighters for what they believe in and what I believe in, Ortiz told MMAWeekly.com about why he decided to start Primetime 360.

Ortiz has had representation over the years. In fact, current UFC president Dana White was once he and Chuck Liddells manager. But Ortiz wasnt a fighter that would lay his life in the hands of his representatives and just accept what was doled out to him.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion, as he says, took many missteps throughout his career, but thats because he was always involved, always taking an active hand in the direction of his career on the business end, not just in the gym and in the cage.

Thats why he believes he has something to offer todays fighters that sets him apart.

Ortiz doesnt intend to promise his fighters that stars and the moon if they sign on with him. He intends to promise them that if they are willing to put in the work, they will be successful, and perhaps more importantly, they will have a future beyond the short lifespan of a professional combat sports athlete.

I want to break the mold on fighters. Theyre going to do all the hard, diligent work to become superstars, said Ortiz. I think thats what it comes down to, where Im showing these guys the right things to do to make themselves a brand. Thats what its really about, a fight for the fighters, and thats what Ive been doing for myself for so long, making the right decisions and not making ones on pure emotions.

Eek! Remote-controlled cyborg cockroaches are real

Scientists with a high tolerance for creepy-crawlies have figured out how to create and control cyborg cockroaches.

How would you like to see this scooting across your kitchen floor?

If Borg ships have vermin on them, they look exactly like a project researchers at North Carolina State University are working on.

These intrepid scientists have taken a lightweight chip with a wireless receiver and transmitter and attached it to a cockroach like a little backpack. For the record, large Madagascar hissing cockroaches are the roach of choice.

A microcontroller is connected to the roach's antennae and cerci (rear sensory organs). Small charges from the wires to the cerci trick the roach into moving in response to a perceived threat. Charges sent to the antennae make the roach think it's bumped into something. Between the two, you have a fairly sophisticated method of cockroach steering.

The researchers imagine using this cyborg cockroach technology to send the little beasties into tight spaces to search for survivors after disasters.

I imagine using this cyborg cockroach technology to scare the bejesus out of unsuspecting friends and for reenacting "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes with cockroach actors.

Ronda Rousey: Cris Cyborg Superfight Could Be ‘Biggest MMA Fight of All-Time'

By Shaun Al-Shatti - Staff Writer

Follow , and Like MMA Fighting on Facebook.

Sep 10, 2012 - Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey isn't ready to give up on Cris Cyborg just yet.

Despite Cyborg's insistence that her body is unable to cut enough weight to reach the 135-pound limit, Rousey continued throw public jabs at the suspended former featherweight champ on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour, criticizing her for flip-flopping on the weight issue and deriding her career as nothing more than a product of cheating and steroid abuse.

"If you can make 145 [pounds] while you're super juiced out, you can make 135 if you're clean," Rousey brashly declared.

"Cyborg has never had a fair fight. If you really look at it, she's had fights where she came in and outweighed the other girl by 12 pounds and then they still fought. This girl has a long history of cheating and using drugs, and coming in overweight, and no one's ever put their foot down ever about it.

"If we did a catchweight of 140, I 100 percent think she'd just come in overweight and be like, Whatever, come fight me.' Want to know why? Because she's done it several times before. She has a track record of doing these things. This girl does things that are blatantly disrespectful to her opponents, over and over and over her whole career. Someone needs to put their foot down about it. So, yeah, I'm going to be the one that has to do it because I can."

Cyborg has long expressed interest in fighting Rousey in the past, however recently she seems to have moved on from the feud. Following Rousey's lopsided victory over Sarah Kaufman and subsequent callout of the Brazilian, Cyborg posted a surprising rant on her Twitter account that perplexed even Strikeforce officials, stating that a drop to bantamweight was out of the question and she would be awaiting her release from Strikeforce, as her real division no longer existed.

Nonetheless, luring Cyborg into the potential superfight continues to be at the top of Rousey's agenda. Last month Rousey's manager, Darin Harvey, asked for the bout to be overseen by extreme and extensive drug testing, including hair follicle testing that could detect illegal substances up to three months after their original ingestion. Now, however, Rousey has backed off the request.
