MUSCAT, Oman (AP) - An international press freedom organization has criticized Oman for convicting 20 activists, including prominent bloggers, on charges of illegal assembly and of insulting the nation's ruler.

The cases are part of wider crackdowns against protesters and online activists in the Arabian Peninsula country, which has seen growing calls for more political openness after last year's unrest inspired by the Arab Spring.

Reporters Without Borders said Thursday it "vigorously protests" the sentences handed out this week. It also called on Oman to throw out the verdicts.

The group says a dozen activists were sentenced Wednesday to a year in prison for illegal assembly and for defaming the sultan. Eight were imprisoned for a year on Monday for defaming the sultan. All 20 were also fined up to 1,000 riyals ($2,601).

Freedom honour for GB cycle coach

8 August 2012 Last updated at 13:36 ET

Team GB's cycling director has been offered the freedom of a Derbyshire borough in recognition of his achievements at London 2012.

Dave Brailsford, who lives in Ilkeston, has been credited with masterminding the cycling team's 12 medals at the Olympics.

The honour also recognises his role in Bradley Wiggins's Tour de France win.

Erewash Borough Council has only ever presented the award once, to the Mercian Regiment in 2007.

Councillor Chris Corbett, the leader of the authority, said: "On behalf of all the residents of Erewash, we want to show Dave how proud we are of his and his team's success.

"A freedom of the borough award is very rarely bestowed on anyone and must only be awarded to someone who has achieved something outstanding."

If Mr Brailsford, who was born in Derby but grew up in north Wales, accepted the honour he will receive an ornate scroll and casket and a medal.

Mr Corbett said he expected unanimous support for the move when it goes to a vote at a meeting in October.

Calls have been made for Olympic gold medal winner Andy Murray to be given the Freedom of Stirling.

Dunblane's MSP, Keith Brown, has written to Stirling Council asking them to consider giving the tennis player the honour.

He congratulated the 25-year-old on his victory over Roger Federer at the London games, calling it a fantastic result.

He said everyone in Dunblane would be proud of the victory.

Mr Brown said: "It's been a hundred years since any member of Team GB has won a singles gold in tennis at the Olympics and I am delighted that Andy's hard work and training has paid off and resulted in double medal success.

"This is an achievement which should be recognised locally and I have written to Stirling Council to ask them to consider giving Andy the Freedom of the City."

A spokesperson for Stirling Council said the authority was considering the request.

Critic's Pick: 'The Terminator'

There is something about these balmy evenings one of the few benefits of the August heat that makes the idea of seeing a movie outside unexpectedly appealing.

So pack a picnic, bring the beverage of your choice and head to Cinespia's Saturday night screening of"The Terminator"under the stars at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

The slick, James Cameron 1984 original starts at 8:30 p.m., but it's a kick to come early and wander the grounds looking for headstones of the likes of Cecil B. DeMille, Douglas Fairbanks and John Huston.

Then settle in to watch Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg, impossibly cool in those shades. He had the brains, he had the killing brawn, he was just waiting for a sequel for single mother Sarah Connor to jump-start his Tin Man heart.

Of course, Linda Hamilton's Sarah didn't need much saving by that point. And somehow, she even made the tough biker chick look jeans, boots and a tight white T-shirt chic.

Often, big action flicks barely hold up for the duration of their summer run. But thanks to Cameron's filmmaking acumen, spectacular effects, full-tilt action and a solid story, "The Terminator," like its star, seems to be indestructible.

Strikeforce talking to ex-champ Cristiane 'Cyborg' Santos about drop to bantamweight

by Steven Marrocco on Aug 08, 2012 at 5:05 pm ET

It's a possible move down in weight to the bantamweight division, where next week's winner of champ Ronda Rousey vs. Sarah Kaufman could await.

"We'll have to talk to [Santos] at that time and see what her interest is as far as going down in weight," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I know it's something that (Strikeforce matchmaker) Sean (Shelby) has had dialogue about, fighting at 135."

Santos was stripped of the Strikeforce featherweight (145-pound) title one month after a post-fight drug test at "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal" turned up positive for stanozolol metabolites in late 2011.

The California State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the event, suspended Santos for one year and fined her $2,500. Additionally, her first-round TKO of Hiroko Yamanaka was also overturned to a no-contest.

An attempt by Santos in April to appeal the decision was unsuccessful. Her suspension runs until Dec. 16 of this year.

The fighter has fought just once in the past 26 months after a string of dominant wins that included her title-winning first-round TKO of Gina Carano in August 2009.

Coker cautioned that Santos' move is not confirmed.

"We'll have to wait until after she gets off suspension to have a serious conversation with her," he said.

Rousey and Kaufman declined to speculate on a possible bout with the ex-champ, and said they are solely focused on their upcoming bout, which headlines "Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman" on Aug. 18 at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. The event airs on Showtime and Showtime Extreme.

Beaches closed by high bacteria levels

TRENTON Environmental officials are awaiting test results after dozens of beaches in New Jersey showed signs of high bacteria levels.

Officials believe recent heavy rainfall caused runoff, sending pollutants into the water.

Most of the 42 beaches are along rivers and bays in Ocean County.

The Environmental Protection Department on Tuesday closed the Avon Road beach in Pine Beach and the Beachwood Beach West in Beachwood because of bacteria levels.

22 beaches in Monmouth, Ocean counties OK after further bacteria testing

Twenty-two beaches in Monmouth and Ocean counties cited for excess bacteria Tuesday were cleared late today, according to a report by APP.com.

Further sampling showed that the beaches met the state Department of Environmental Protection's standard for bacteria levels, the report said.

Two beaches in Ocean County were closed today because of the higher levels, according to the story. They were river beaches at Avon Road in Pine Beach and Beachwood Beach in Beachwood.

Storm runoff can contribute to higher bacteria levels, the story said.

Spedia Acquires “NEO” Ai and Voice Recognition Technologies

Wilmington, DE (PRWEB) August 09, 2012

Spedia Inc. moves quickly to pick up NEO - Voice Recognition and Artificial Intelligence Technologies, and NEO DIRECTORY the futuristic assistant, directory and search platform. NEO and the NEO DIRECTORY are a personality, platform and technology originally conceived and created by Jerry Buys, CEO and Founder of Spedia Inc.

NEO began its early stages of development around 1995-99 when Jerry Buys conceived the idea for NEO and the NEO DIRECTORY. Jerry Buys was also the original creator, registrar and owner of the domains NEODIRECTORY.COM, NEODIRECTORY.NET, and NEODIRECTORY.ORG, where he originally planned to develop the technology, brand, and platforms and was able to revive the .net and .org domains. The official information website is http://www.neovt.com. Spedias strategy is an effort to retain the rights and technology to NEO and to build upon and grow the Spedia brand and bolster its position in the social media and high tech sectors.

Spedia will protect and defend the NEO name, platforms, and technologies and pick up development where the original company left off, says Jerry Buys. SIRI (referring to the Apple iPhone) and others are infants compared to what I envisioned with NEO way back in the 90s. Think Star Trek and beyond! NEO is the future of voice technology! PERIOD! NEO will also become a social assistant, security assistant, and life assistant.

With that in mind, I came to realize what a major mistake it would be if I let the name and technology slip completely out of my hands. I cant fathom the idea of allowing someone else to take NEO and capitalize on the name and technology that I am the original creator of, he says. Now that Spedia is my future and an up-and-coming brand to contend with, I have to put all my cards on the table. NEO will become just one of the many signature assets of Spedia that will help secure the future brand and success of Spedia Inc., he adds.

Recenly, on Bloomberg television, Dierdre Bolton asked an executive this question about technology Is there too much money and too few ideas? Obviously, she was talking with the wrong person. With Spedia, the scenario is that we have way too many ideas and not enough money. Even more so, we have too many ideas and no one to hear us out. If we could just find a venture capital firm or investor to listen and see what we have, wed be the next Google and Facebook.

Spedia is betting on its brand, strategy, and innovations to help the company quickly emerge as one of the major leading social media and high tech companies converging internet, mobile, social media, and other concepts and technologies.

Spedia is aggresively seeking venture capital and top ranked executive talent in its efforts to build a rock solid foundation to aid in the design, implentation, and develoopment of its concepts, innovations, and technologies. Spedia is driven with vision and focus on 21st Century innovations and technologies. Talk about a ground floor opportunity and being at the right place at the right time, this is it! says Mr. Buys.

LAKELAND | Central Florida Aerospace Academy teacher Lori Bradner has been named the Air Force Association's National Aerospace Teacher of the Year.

Bradner, who teaches science at the Kathleen High School's Aerospace Academy in Lakeland, will receive a $3,000 prize and a plaque for her achievement during an awards ceremony Sept. 15 in Washington, D.C. She becomes the 27th recipient of the national award.

The wife and mother of four kids said she was "flabbergasted" by the honor.

"I'm just doing what I love," Bradner, 43, said. "This needs to go to the students because they are the ones who make me who I am."

Superintendent of Schools Sherrie Nickell said Bradner continues to distinguish herself as an exemplary teacher and the Air Force award proves that.

"She is an educator's educator going above and beyond, again and again," Nickell said. "We are fortunate to have this amazing teacher, who is worthy of national acclaim, as one of our own."

AFA's National Aerospace Teacher of the Year award recognizes classroom teachers at the national level for their accomplishments and achievements in building enthusiasm among K-12 students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics, an area known as STEM.

Bradner has been teaching since 2008. She established the county's first Space Camp for STEM teachers, coordinated a sister program with a Norwegian school and founded Central Florida Air Academy's Civil Air Patrol Squadron.

In addition to the Air Force honor, Bradner is also the 2012 NASA Women in STEM Education High School Scholar Teacher and the 2011 Reach for the Stars Teacher of the Year.

Usain Bolt Targets Victory That Will Bring Sprinting Immortality

By Tariq Panja and Danielle Rossingh - 2012-08-09T00:42:19Z

Usain Bolt is one win away from completing an unprecedented double that he said will bring him sprinting immortality.

Bolt jogged over the finish line last night at the Olympic Stadium in London in a time of 20.18 seconds to qualify for the 200-meter final. He said he planned it that way.

You cant work too hard, youve got the finals, Bolt told reporters. That was the aim. You cant push too hard.

The 25-year-old Jamaican said after running an Olympic record 9.63 to defend his 100-meter title that he also needed to retain the 200-meter crown to become a legend. Victory tonight would make him the first man to take gold in the 100 and 200 meters at consecutive games.

Bolt, one of the most recognized athletes in the world, is the only person to have run below 9.60 in the 100 meters and under 19.20 in the 200 meters. He broke his own world records in the 100 and 200 meters at the 2009 world championships in Berlin.

The 6-foot-5 Bolt, who only took up the 100 meters as speed work to prepare for the longer sprint, may not have things all his own way in his favorite event.

Yohan Blake, the silver medalist in the 100 meters, beat Bolt in the Jamaican 200-meter trials, raising the prospect that he could shock his training partner at the Olympics. Blake slowed to win his 200 semifinal in 20.01.

The race was a walk in the park, said the 22-year-old, whose 19.26 at a meet in Brussels on Sept. 16 is the second fastest all time, 0.07 slower than Bolts world record.

Commentators including former 100-meter Olympic champion Maurice Greene said they favored Blake over Bolt in the shorter sprint.

Which came first: chemistry or winning?

CHICAGO -- White Sox players have frequently talked about the special bond running throughout this clubhouse back to the start of the 2012 season. So in this particular instance, the team winning might have only enhanced that tight-knit chemistry already in place.

"It has to have a combination," manager Robin Ventura said of the chemistry debate. "Anyone who is in first place or near the top talks about how great it is in the clubhouse. But winning usually does that. I've been on teams that were very bad that had a good chemistry and in the end, it didn't work so well. Guys got along and it was fine. Winning just kind of promotes that."

"You're in first place. First place is where your good chemistry is," third baseman Kevin Youkilis said. "I've been on teams where there have been a few things and we won a World Series. The biggest thing is when you're winning games and in first place, chemistry is highlighted a lot more so hopefully we can have great chemistry the rest of the way."

More important than the chemistry factor is the White Sox maintaining the same singular focus from Spring Training moving forward. Take one game at a time and hope all of those good daily efforts add up to a playoff berth by the time October rolls around.

"When you feel like you are playing to accomplish your goal and that goal is to play in the playoffs, it's fun to come here and try to win every night," said right fielder Alex Rios, who has never played in the postseason. "You have a purpose for coming to the field. It has been one of the most fun seasons I have had."

CHICAGO -- For a brief period on Wednesday morning, manager Robin Ventura and his staff tried to put together a starting lineup to face the Royals in their series finale loss without Alejandro De Aza, Kevin Youkilis, Paul Konerko and Alex Rios.

"It was creative," said Ventura with a smile. "It was a fun morning."

Ventura never had to make public that lineup card, as Youkilis and De Aza came to U.S. Cellular Field ready for action. Youkilis was scratched from Tuesday's contest with a sore right knee, while De Aza missed the first two games of the series with back stiffness.

But Rios and Konerko were sidelined, giving them two days of inactivity thanks to Thursday's scheduled off-day. Ventura announced postgame on Wednesday that Konerko sustained a mild concussion in the seventh inning of Tuesday's loss, when Jarrod Dyson's left elbow connected with the right side of Konerko's head as Dyson beat out an infield hit. Rios was absent due to back stiffness.

"This has been going on for a few days, but [Tuesday], it got stiffer," Rios said. "I don't think it's something that's going to keep me out of that lineup for more than a day or so. I'll be fine."
