Removing hazardous substances from the air

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are carbon-based compounds, many of which are hazardous to humans' health. EU-funded researchers coordinated efforts to apply nanotechnology to the capture and sequestration of these compounds.

VOCs evaporate into the air at room temperature. The evaporation process produces tiny air-borne molecules that may be unsafe to those who inhale them, come into contact with them via skin, or drink them in contaminated water supplies.

While the use of VOCs has been restricted in recent years, there are still thousands of products present in everyday life that contain VOCs. Removal of VOCs from waste air streams, whether at factories that use VOCs or at wastewater treatment plants that remove VOCs from wastewater, is commonly accomplished with separation membranes.

The application of nanotechnology (technology on the scale of atoms or molecules) to membrane filtration of VOCs in waste air streams may greatly enhance functionality.

Nanoparticles have the unique feature of having very high surface areas compared to their volumes. This surface area is extremely useful as a work surface for chemical reactions and absorption of other molecules.

However, integration of nanotechnology with membrane separation technology for more efficient and greener removal of VOCs from waste air streams is an emerging, developing field.

In order to coordinate efforts in research with those in industry and in policymaking bodies, European researchers initiated the ANVOC project.

The main goal of the project was to organise a symposium bringing together stakeholders from all areas to disseminate knowledge to end users and to facilitate cooperation among research and development (R&D) bodies.

ANVOC scientists met all goals, bringing together international experts in nanotechnology, membrane technology and air pollution control.

The symposium presented R&D results, identified the types of membranes used in recovery of VOCs, and demonstrated the use of membranes in gas separation. In addition, valuable possibilities for future research collaboration were identified.

Maureen Gutierrez, MD, Opens New Private Practice in Dallas

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Dallas-based internal medicine physician, Maureen Gutierrez, MD, opened her new internal medicine practice on Aug. 1 and is now seeing both new and current patients. The Dallas Comprehensive Medical Care office is located at 8220 Walnut Hill Lane, PPB II Suite 314 in Dallas. Gutierrez brings five years of experience at Harvill-Tschumy Internal Medicine Clinic to her new endeavor while remaining part of the medical staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.

I am very excited to explore an innovative side of medicine through a practice that uses modern amenities such as the Internet and social networking to connect with my patients and provide great healthcare, said Gutierrez.

Gutierrez began her medical career at the University of Virginia where she completed her pre-medical training and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry in 1997. After teaching math and science in Houston, Texas, for three years, she continued her studies at the University of Texas at Houston where she received her medical degree in 2004. Gutierrez spent the next four years in specialty training and residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where she was appointed chief resident and served one year as an instructor to internal medicine trainees. Now she is a board certified internist through the American Board of Internal Medicine with her own private practice.

In addition to attending medical school, Gutierrez was involved with Teach for America, HISD (Houston Independent School District) and KIPP Academy. From these experiences I learned that first and foremost my job as a physician is still that of a teacher. You cannot simply tell someone what to do, you have to explain and educate, said Gutierrez. This has influenced the way I approach my patients.

Gutierrez moved to the Lone Star State in 2008 where she joined Texas Health Dallas. When shes not treating patients, the dedicated and loyal doctor is like every other mother. She enjoys spending free time with her husband and two sons, and loves a good book. She is currently training for her first half-marathon in the fall. Gutierrez has exceptional time management skills while each of her patients has her full attention, she still makes time for her family.

At the end of the day, building relationships with each of my patients is most important. I am a people pleaser so my goal is to answer every question and address every complaint while still spending the right amount of time with my family, said Gutierrez.

Her long-term goal for her practice is plain and simple - to provide great healthcare to the Dallas community. To make an appointment, call 214-865-7001 or visit http://www.dallascare.com for more information.

Mizzou Medical Program Honored

By Mike Morgan

CREATED Aug. 13, 2012

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A University of Missouri program that places doctors in rural areas is receiving national recognition.

The program of the medical school's Area Health Education Center was honored with a top award recently by the National Area Health Education Center Organization.

The medical school's Rural Track Pipeline Program guides undergraduates to rural settings for training during medical school and, ultimately, seeks to place them in rural practices.

The university says more than 450 medical students have participated in the program since its creation in 1995. Sixty-five percent of those who took part practice medicine in Missouri, nearly half of them in rural areas of the state.

A new model for medical schools

A week or so ago, my wife and I drove from Santa Barbara to the University of California, Irvine, to attend a "White Coat" ceremony for the incoming class of medical students, including our son, at the UC Irvine Medical School.

It was a very impressive event and, as parents, we felt very proud of our son, as we were a couple of years earlier when our daughter graduated from law school. But what I also found impressive about the ceremony where these would-be doctors are initiated into their first step as doctors by receiving their white doctor's coat was how diverse the students were. Not only were more than half of the students women, but ethnically, the mix was likewise impressive.

As a scholar of Latinos in the United States, I paid particular attention to the number of new Latino medical students, including my son. Here again, I was impressed. A good percentage was Latinos. What is important here is that UC Irvine is ahead of the curve with respect to the number and percentage of Latinos in our medical schools. Nationally, only about 5 percent of all medical students in the country are Latinos, while the percentage of Latinos in the U.S. is about 16 percent. Many Latinos, especially immigrants, do not regularly see doctors, and some studies suggest this has to do with the lack of Latino physicians.

Latinos as a whole suffer from many illnesses, including an almost epidemic number of diabetic cases, and the lack of Latino doctors in Latino communities only compounds the problem. I recently received a small grant to begin oral histories with the few Latino physicians in the Santa Barbara area as a way of using their stories to encourage potential Latino medical students to apply and to go to medical schools. I am encouraged at the same time by the Irvine model, where clearly the medical school understands the importance of recruiting qualified Latinos to attend medical school and to challenge the national lack of Latino medical students. My hope is that other major medical schools will follow this model. Much of our nation's health could depend on this because by 2050, Latinos are project to represent one-third of the national population.

10 Medical Schools With the Lowest Acceptance Rates

The U.S. News Short List, separate from our overall rankings, is a regular series that magnifies individual data points in hopes of providing students and parents a way to find which undergraduate or graduate programs excel or have room to grow in specific areas. Be sure to explore The Short List: College and The Short List: Grad School to find data that matters to you in your college or grad school search.

Becoming a doctor is hard work. Medical students spend three years studying symptoms, diseases, and treatments, endure long hours in residencies and fellowships, and then must pass a grueling series of board exams. But before any of that can happen, future M.D.'s need to get into medical school.

On average, fewer than 9 percent of medical school applications were accepted in 2011, according to data reported to U.S. News. In total, 500,900 applications were submitted in 2011 to the 111 medical schools reporting application and acceptance data to U.S. News in an annual survey. Prospective medical students often apply to multiple schools.

[Discover the top three reasons why med school applications are rejected.]

Grades, MCAT scores, letters of evaluation, and extracurricular activities all play a role in whether an application is accepted, but which programs students apply to can also impact their chances of getting into med school.

Among the 11 medical schools with the lowest acceptance rates, an average of 3.4 percent of applicants were accepted in 2011. (Due to ties, there are more than 10 schools on the list.) The Mayo Medical School in Minnesota accepted just 1.9 percent of applicants, the lowest acceptance rate among the medical schools that submitted acceptance data to U.S. News. George Washington University's School of Medicine and Health Sciences had the second lowest, sending acceptance letters to 2.5 percent of the 14,649 students who applied in 2011.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the University of North Dakota's School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Western University of Health Sciences's College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in California each accepted more than 25 percent of its 2011 applicants.

Below are the 11 medical schools with the lowest acceptance rates, based on applicant and acceptance data reported by the institutions to U.S. News:

Don't see your school in the top 10? Access the U.S. News Medical School Compass to find application and acceptance data for every school, residency statistics, and much more.

U.S. News surveyed more than 140 medical schools for our 2011 survey of research and primary care programs. Schools self-reported a myriad of data regarding their academic programs and the makeup of their student body, among other areas, making U.S. News's data the most accurate and detailed collection of school facts and figures of its kind. While U.S. News uses much of this survey data to rank schools for our annual Best Medical Schools rankings, the data can also be useful when examined on a smaller scale. U.S. News will now produce lists of data, separate from the overall rankings, meant to provide students and parents a means to find which schools excel, or have room to grow, in specific areas that are important to them. While the data come from the schools themselves, these lists are not related to, and have no influence over, U.S. News's rankings of Best Colleges or Best Graduate Schools.

Liberty Provides Update on Operations, Financing and Debt Restructuring

TSX: LBE

TORONTO , Aug. 14, 2012 /CNW/ - Liberty Mines Inc. ("Liberty" or the "Company") announced today that effective immediately it has temporarily suspended production activities due to a low nickel price environment, which has declined by more than 25% in the past six months. Liberty's decision is designed to preserve its nickel ore for when base metals prices improve, and production becomes economically viable.

"Clearly, we are disappointed that market conditions and commodities prices have not kept pace with Liberty's turnaround since the start of the year," said Chris Stewart , President and CEO of Liberty Mines. "Our decision to suspend production temporarily is not being taken lightly, but is ultimately in the best long-term interests of our investors and strategic partners. In the interim, we are making every effort to reduce costs and update our go-forward strategy."

The Company will move all of its assets into a care and maintenance mode effective immediately. This will enable Liberty to protect its assets, and keep them in a ready state so that viable production can easily be restarted when the price of nickel has recovered sufficiently.

To reduce short-term cash requirements, Liberty has also decided to temporarily suspend its exploration diamond drilling activities until further notice.

In response to adverse market conditions, Liberty has also announced that the offering of units of the Company contemplated under the preliminary short form prospectus dated June 26, 2012 is being withdrawn. The Company is reviewing its options for alternative financing arrangements as part of its updated strategy.

To address short term cash requirements, the Company has approached its primary shareholder, Jien International Investment Limited (JIIL), for additional financial support. JIIL has agreed to provide additional financial support to allow Liberty to continue as a going concern by making available an additional $5 million dollars between the date hereof and the end of the year. Interest on these funds will accrue at the rate of 10% per annum following receipt of the required regulatory approvals (including shareholder approval if applicable) and will be due on December 31 , 2012. This additional advance will be secured as part of the existing security arrangements with JIIL and will be subject to standard covenants and events of default

Liberty also announced that it has been advised that its primary shareholder, JIIL, is re-evaluating the terms of the debt restructuring announced previously due to unfavorable market conditions and declining metals prices. The parties have agreed to enter into negotiations to complete a restructuring of all outstanding debt owed to JIIL prior to December 31 , 2012. Liberty will keep shareholders apprised of new developments as negotiations are settled.

Sennen Comments Briefly on Liberty's Desperate Second Letter

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Aug. 14, 2012) - Sennen Resources Ltd. (SN.V) ("Sennen or the Company") comments briefly on the second "Open Letter to Shareholders of Sennen Resources" (the "Letter") dated August 9, 2012 issued by Liberty Silver Corp. (TSX:LSL and LBSV-OTCBB) ("Liberty").

The Letter does nothing to refute the cogent reasons for rejection presented in Sennen's Circular and News Release dated July 31, 2012, and the Letter is replete with fundamental errors that display an embarassing lack of understanding by Liberty's management of Sennen's financial statements and other disclosure. Out of apparent desperation, despite suggesting the desire to conclude a "friendly" transaction, Liberty has spent an inordinate amount of time and effort on personal attacks and criticizing the stewardship of the Sennen's Board and management for succeeding where they themselves have not. Rather ironically, Liberty will fail if it is unable to achieve exactly what that stewardship has produced (and the Board of Liberty has not) - $13.5M in its treasury which places Sennen in a strong financial position to carry on its business and remain solvent for the foreseeable future.

Sennen's Shareholders, who understand the lack of relevant experience in the sector as demonstrated by Liberty's management in their Letter, and their desperate attempt to access cash by any means for that company's survival, still await a response from Liberty's management regarding their "entry cost" into Liberty. Sennen Shareholders, as well as any current and potential future shareholders of Liberty, are entitled to know whether this was at one half of one cent per share (or less), being the average cost of 68.4M of the 81M Liberty shares currently on issue. This fundamental shareholder issue of value creation or exploitation by the Liberty management, board and controlling shareholders must be addressed. Sennen has still been unable to locate Liberty management's US Insider filings, and Sennen once again extends an invitation to Liberty Directors and management to disclose this information in the interests of full and plain disclosure-a subject that lies at the very heart of Sennen Shareholders' lack of trust in Liberty's management.

Sennen has yet to receive one letter, phone call or email in support of the Liberty Offer, and the response of Sennen Shareholders to the Liberty Letter has been extremely negative. Any Sennen Shareholders that do wish to incur the high risk of financial exposure to Liberty are reminded that they can simply buy Liberty shares in the market.

Stated Ian Rozier, President of Sennen, "Several of the comments made by Liberty's management are unprofessional, factually inaccurate and disingenuous, and clearly demonstrate their lack of experience and integrity without the need for any further comment from Sennen. Quite simply put, Sennen Shareholders are effectively being asked to make a Private Placement of $13.5M into a junior company with an OTC Bulletin Board type share structure that the market, Liberty directors, and its major shareholders, are themselves unwilling to do. The myriad of reasons for the markets' refusal to make such an investment into Liberty are confirmed by the very comprehensive report from the Financial Advisors to the Board of Sennen, and based on Liberty's lack of financing success and the unwillingness of Liberty's directors and major shareholders to finance it themselves, we can only assume that they are aware of, and concur with this market assessment. We repeat, based on any analysis of the fundamental issues, Liberty's Offer is of zero interest to Sennen's Board, management and to shareholders representing a majority of the Company's shares. Liberty's advisors should advise them to stop wasting everyone's time and money."

Do not tender your Sennen Shares to the Liberty Offer. Sennen Shareholders are reminded that the Board of Directors have recommended rejection of the Liberty Offer for the reasons set out in the Director's Circular dated July 30, 2012. There is no need for Sennen Shareholders to do anything to reject the Liberty Offer. Please refer to the Director's Circular, which is available on SEDAR, for the reasons for rejection, and steps to take if you have already tendered your Sennen Shares.

Neither the TSX Venture Exchange (the "TSXV") nor its Regulation Services Provider (as that term is defined in the policies of the TSXV) has reviewed, nor do they accept responsibility for the adequacy or accuracy of, this release.

Silicon Valley's Libertarian Problem

Many entrepreneurs and VCs claim pure libertarianism is the only political position that makes sense. Here's why that doesn't work.

Flickr/Gage Skidmore

Rep. Ron Paul on the campaign trail earlier this year.

The task of the state consists solely and exclusively in guaranteeing the protection of life, health, liberty, and private property against violent attacks. Everything that goes beyond this is an evil. -- Ludwig von Mises

Silicon Valley is having a libertarian moment. When I say libertarian, Im referring to the purist strain most prominently embodied by Rep. Ron Paul and family, embraced by an increasing number of entrepreneurs and VCs.

But theres something uneasy about Silicon Valleys libertarianism, because the purist theory behind it doesnt quite square with the facts. The theory is that Silicon Valley doesnt need the government. The Pauls, in fact, recently wrote up amanifestoarguing [t]he true technology revolutionaries have little need for big government and never have.

The facts suggest otherwise. The government has funded a wide variety of research critical to the technology industry and, more recently, supported a flourishing Internet sector with a very important piece of legislation requiring net neutrality. However, with the major exceptions of the foregoing, the government also has been problematic in its attempt to control Silicon Valleys new technologies and freedoms. Libertarianism may offer the single best ideological response--but only with important concessions to the role of government.

The Problems With SV Libertarianism

Lets stipulate that the government is an imperfect partner. SOPA, export controls, a medieval immigration policy, an IP system designed by Kafka, and incoherent tax policies provide plenty of libertarian ammunition.

Footage showed the extent of the fires on the mainland and La Gomera in the Canary Islands

Firefighters in Spain's Canary Islands are still struggling to contain a blaze on La Gomera described by a local official as an "ecological disaster".

Five planes and seven helicopters are supporting firefighters on the ground.

But a change in wind direction means the flames are not spreading as quickly as before, Spanish media report.

About 5,000 people were evacuated on the island, but most of them can return to their homes now, officials say. So far the fire has destroyed 39 homes.

Morocco is sending a firefighting plane to help Spain tackle the fire.

About 25% of the Garajonay nature reserve, a Unesco World Heritage site, has been destroyed by fire. The area measures about 750 hectares (1,853 acres).

The woodland is a unique ecosystem, believed to be millions of years old. Javier Gonzalez Ortiz, the Canary Islands' head of security and emergencies, described it as "an ecological disaster".
