Longevity is a beautiful thing

I recently interviewed Micky Dolenz, the singer and drummer for the 1960s pop-rock group The Monkees about longevity.

We spoke specifically about longevity in the music business as hes spent most of his life making and performing music.

This is an artist who has spent 46 years performing the music of The Monkees in concert either solo or with the group.

When I asked him about what people could expect from his recent concert at the California State Fair, he simply stated, All the big, fat, great, Monkees hitsthats what I do.

After our conversation, I took in the fact that Micky has performed those songs for his fans for nearly five decades.

Five decades - and he continues to do so with as much energy and fervor as hed done in the beginning; his July 13 fair performance was nothing less than excellent and full of get-up-and-go.

Our conversation reminded me that longevity - not only in music, but also in other forms of the arts - has seemingly lost its importance to many artists and to the public in general.

Its almost as though it is expected that we only see or hear from our new stars - music, movie, or otherwise - for a maximum of five years, if theyre lucky.

To me, it just doesnt seem like many people are sticking to their craft for very long, even the artists who claim to have a true love for their art.

New DNA work may offer break in 36-year-old Michigan slayings

(CNN) -- A DNA link may signal a break in a 36-year-old investigation into the slaying of four children, the Oakland County, Michigan, prosecutor's office announced Tuesday.

The so-called Oakland County Child Killer is believed to be responsible for the deaths of Mark Stebbins, 12, Jill Robinson, 12, Kristine Mihelich, 10, and Timothy King, 11, who were kidnapped and found dead between 1976 and 1977.

Using technology unavailable to investigators at the time of the crimes, the FBI DNA unit at Quantico tested and analyzed human hairs found on the bodies of Stebbins and King, the prosecutor's office said.

Investigators were able to establish a mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, profile link between the hairs, establishing they came from the same person, essentially proving the two crimes were connected.

"This is the first piece of evidence that actually links any of the victims together. It was always believed that these two killings were linked to the same person, however that was an assumption based on the similarities in the crime," said Jessica R. Cooper, Oakland County Prosecutor.

Armed with proof the boys' death was connected, authorities pulled up more evidence from the 1970s investigation. At the time, police had found a person of interest and were able to search his car. The car was a 1966 Pontiac Bonneville. The investigators took samples from the interior of the car and found small hairs, fibers and fur. They were placed in evidence where they remained for decades, until this material, too, was submitted to the FBI DNA unit for testing and analysis.

According to prosecutors, the testing revealed that the hairs recovered from the Bonneville had the same mtDNA profile as the hairs recovered from the boys' bodies.

The owner of the car, 70-year-old Archibald "Ed" Sloan, is serving a life sentence for two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree. Sloan was tested for a DNA match, but it was determined he did not share the same DNA profile: The hairs found on the boys and in the car were not his.

"It is believed that Sloan would allow others to use his 1966 Bonneville, as well as the other described vehicles, so investigators are looking for information concerning any other people who may have used this car, or had access to any of these vehicles. Finding anyone like this who turns out to be the donor of the hair may be the key to solving these two murders," Cooper said.

Migration at Gibraltar: Boise State University Raptor Biology Graduate Students Gain International Perspective in Spain

Newswise Boise State University's one-of-a-kind master's degree program in raptor biology and partnering Idaho Bird Observatory have soared to new heights with the establishment of the Fall Migration Travel Award.

The raptor biology program has long provided students with a unique graduate experience aimed at understanding the science and conservation of birds of prey. The Idaho Bird Observatory now enhances that experience by offering qualified students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of raptor biology in an international setting.

Last summer, graduate students Micah Scholer and Martina Zucchini traveled to Tarifa, Spain, for three months to work with non-profit and sister organization to the Idaho Bird Observatory, Fundacin Migres. The students learned about the population dynamics of migratory birds, the ecology of European raptors and exchanged cultural experiences with the Spanish people.

For a raptor biologist such as myself, the chance to participate in monitoring one of the worlds greatest avian migrations presented an extraordinary opportunity for me to develop as a professional, in addition to gaining a new cultural perspective, Scholer said.

Scholer is returning to Spain later this month to spend another three months as a volunteer coordinator and work on research collaborations with Fundacin Migres preparing manuscripts for publication.

Fundacin Migres mission is to monitor population changes of migratory birds in Spain and the rest of Western Europe. Their migration observatories are situated on the coast of Spain looking out across the Strait of Gibraltar. Each year, hundreds of thousands of soaring birds and an estimated 20-40 million songbirds pass through this area as they cross the Strait at its narrowest point on their voyage between Europe and Africa. This makes the Strait an excellent place to study the phenomenon of avian migration.

Scholer and Zucchini helped count 29 different species of nearly 400,000 birds. More information about the project is available at the Fundacin Migres web site.

UMass Medical School is Awarded Multi-Million Dollar Contract to Manage Health Care at Federal Correctional Health …

WORCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) a contract to manage comprehensive medical services to approximately 4,900 inmates at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) located in Butner, North Carolina.

The agreement, valued at $24.7 million for the first year, represents the UMMSs largest federal correctional health contract to date. The contract also has options for four additional years that could increase the overall award to more than $136 million through 2016.

UMMSs Health and Criminal Justice Program, part of its Commonwealth Medicine division, will manage the contract. The Medical Schools work at FMC Butner will begin later this month.

Forever and a day

I'm really surprised that this immortality thing isn't the No. 1 news story of the decade. After all, the news announcement came from the Harvard School of Public Health, certainly one of the most revered and trusted institutions in the world. According to "50 Plus," the Hutch News health magazine supplement, "A new study from the Harvard School of Public Health shows that eating even a small amount of red meat every day raises mortality risk by 13 percent, while a daily serving of processed meat every day comes with a 20 percent increased risk of mortality." By extension, then, if you want to live forever, stop eating red meat.

Of course there will be a few glitches, but that is normal for any major social change. Since the only people dying will be those in accidents or those still hooked on the insidious drug of red meat, many morticians may have to find another calling. Of course, we'll always have black market red meat purveyors furtively hawking their wares in dimly lit alleys, and a few lonely and depressed people will try to end their lives by gorging themselves on steak. Perhaps there will be danger from the secondhand aroma of a freshly grilled juicy hamburger, but I'm assuming Harvard will be checking that out, also.

Of course, the biggest problem is long-term: We really will have a population problem, as well as its concurrent issue of limited resources. Our current seven-billion world population will creep upward slowly at first, then increase inexorably and exponentially. Our only recourse is to colonize space. Astrophysicists have already identified several Earth-type planets capable of sustaining life as we know it. One of the most limiting factors in space colonization is our longevity, but that will no longer be a problem if we have forever. True, we may get a little bored living centuries in a spaceship, but by then we will have developed the technology for being placed in a cryogenic sleep or suspended animation.

Just think, this great news was hidden away on Page 5 of a newspaper magazine supplement! It wasn't a banner headline; it wasn't even the lead for the article itself. Kind of makes me wonder about the supplement proofreaders and their inability to extrapolate the consequences of such marvelous statistics.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if one of the biggest negative consequences of immortality is one I've already mentioned: boredom. I challenge you to ask yourself, "What would you do if you had forever?" When I asked myself that question, I quickly came up with a plan of action: I decided to go to Burger King and order two Whoppers with all the fixin's.

Thoughts on team chemistry

Twice in the last week, the topic of chemistry has been raised in regards to disappointing seasons.

This summer weve been hanging out a lot more, getting to know each other. It seems like everybody likes each other this year, so it should be a fun year.

The bolded section found its way onto to twitter, however, which resulted in the college hoops blogosphere coming down hard on Austin Rivers. Obviously, the thinking went, Curry was taking a subtle shot Rivers.

Down in Memphis, rising junior Chris Crawford had this to say to the Commercial Appeals beat-writer Jason Smith:

We had a lot of like, you know it was some people that separated. Our chemistry wasnt really there, Crawford said. This year, everybody is talking to each other. We want to be a better team. Everybody is hanging out more. Everybody is trying to be one instead of in our separate groups.

Chemistry is important, and its not just with basketball. Its outside of basketball, too. Campus life, being together, going to the movies or anything, youve got to have that kind of bond.

Team chemistry is one of those vague terms that seem more like a press conference cliche than an actual issue. But rest assured, it is vital to a teams success. Whether it is role players accepting the fact they are role players, team leaders picking up struggling teammates instead of putting them down, or simply liking each other off the court, chemistry can be a deciding factor for a season.

Ask UCLA.

Or UConn. Or Pitt.Or Mississippi State.

Or, for that matter, Missouri. Frank Haiths ability to unify that team and get them to buy into the system he wanted to run was a huge reason the Tigers were so successful.

Mooresville chemistry teacher to referee wrestling at London Olympics

MOORESVILLE -

Pinning down Olympic dreams is an inexact science - even for a chemistry teacher.

Mooresville High School's Zach Errett has been grappling with his love of wrestling since he was wearing the smallest of tights.

As a youngster he realized there wouldn't be any Olympic medals in his future, so he decided that he could get to the games another way.

"I started refereeing when I was in middle school and started working my way up," said Errett. "So to kind of be able to make it there and be a part of the experience and to be around wrestling and be involved with some of the best wrestlers in the world, it's really just a tremendous honor to be a part of that as once a former athlete in that sport."

From middle school to junior high, through high school and college, Errett hones his officiating skills. Forthe lastten years he's been a chemistry teacher and the head wrestling coach at Mooresville High School. At the same time he's also become one of the best wrestling referees in the world.

This summer his Olympic plan paid off. Errett is one of onlythree officials from the United States who will work the summer games in London.

"To be selected was a great honor just because there have been so many great referees that have worked the Olympics along with some great referees that have been really close and not able to make the Olympics," Errett said.

The wrestling team at Mooresville never doubted their coach.

Says senior Brent McCreary, "I think it's a really good opportunity for him I know he's worked almost all of his life to get there. I've actually reffed with him a few times at some local tournaments and he really takes pride in his work and it's a good opportunity for him."
