Victor Ambros Joins Firefly BioWorks’ Scientific Advisory Board

Today Firefly BioWorks announced the election of Victor R. Ambros, Ph.D. to the companys Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Ambros is the Silverman Professor of Natural Sciences in the Program in Molecular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and serves as co-director of the RNA Therapeutics Institute at UMass Medical. His laboratory focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of gene regulation by microRNAs and how microRNAs function in regulatory networks affecting development and disease. Since then, his research group has focused on the role of microRNAs in development. Greene, MD, a professor of medicine, microbiology and immunology at UCSF who directs virology and immunology research at the UCSF-affiliated Gladstone Institutes, has joined with other global AIDS experts to release a locally affordable version of the worlds leading AIDS medical textbook.

Designed specifically for regions that today are hardest hit by the disease, this new text is the latest weapon in a growing arsenal aimed at curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS worldwide.

The textbook, titled Sandes HIV/AIDS Medicine: Global Care, is being offered at a significant discount to health care professionals in the developing world. It recently provided new insight into how the virus kills CD4 T cells and simultaneously triggers inflammation that promotes further disease progression. His lab and its collaborators have also identified human amyloid fibrils in semen that enhance the ability of HIV to infect new cells a discovery that one day could help reduce new instances of infection.

Medical school in Phoenix has its largest class

PHOENIX (AP) - Eighty students will arrive this week for classes at the University of Arizona's medical school in Phoenix.

Those students represent the largest class since the university's College of Medicine established a downtown Phoenix campus five years ago.

The students soon will share the newly opened health sciences education building with Northern Arizona University students studying to become physical therapists and physician assistants.

The campus is scheduled to expand later this year with the groundbreakings of a 250,000-square-foot University of Arizona Cancer Center and a privately funded biotech lab next to the building anchored by the Translational Genomics Research Institute and International Genomics Consortium.

The Arizona Cancer Center is slated to become the campus' first clinical presence with a scheduled groundbreaking later this year.

The Liberty Foundations 2012 Salute to Veterans tour gave media flights on Monday July 23, 2012 on the Memphis Belle, a restored WWII B-17 bomber at Landmark Aviation in Syracuse. The plane will be available for public flights and tours on Sunday July 29, 2012. The flying fortress bomber will fly at about two thousand feet during the media and public flights. They flew at between 25 and 35-thousand feet during combat missions. The four-propeller plane has a wingspan of 103 feet. This plane was built in 1945 and used to carry cargo and troops but flew a combat mission. It was then restored in the 1980s to reflect the original Memphis Belle.

Libertarian Candidate Gary Johnson May End Up Appearing In Presidential Debates

Youre all thinking it, so Im just going to say it: a presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney is going to be incredibly dull. However, a third person may be joining them on the stage, because the executive director of the Commission on Presidential Debates told U.S. News Washington Whispers that Libertarian party nominee Gary Johnson might end up debating the two leading candidates, because he is close to meeting the full criteria that allow certain candidates to appear in debates.

This news comes a week after Johnson supporters launched a Blackout CNN movement to protest the network from not giving Johnson enough airtime. The commissions executive director, Janet Brown, said that the decisions for which candidates will appear on stage have not been finalized yet.

Whispers runs through the list of qualifying factors needed to get in the debates, showing that so far, Johnson is two for three.

Johnson, of course, fulfills an age and nationality requirement, and he has recently met the second criterion as well: That a candidates name must appear on enough state ballots to have at least a mathematical chance of securing an Electoral College majority in the 2012 general election.

But the third requirement could lead to Johnsons exclusion. The commission requires a candidate to secure at least 15 percent in selected polls, which Johnson has not yet done. (Gary Johnson polled at 5.3 percent in a poll earlier this month by JZ Analytics; an April Public Policy Polling poll showed him at 6 percent.)

Johnson campaign spokesman Joe Hunter told Whispers of the 15 center benchmark: Were certainly working towards that and hoping to achieve it.

Canada's premiers will discuss two new reports to be presented to them at the meeting from a joint probe that examined ways to improve patient care, find better value in the $130-billion health care system, and determine the impacts of a new federal health funding plan.

OTTAWA Canadas 13 provincial and territorial leaders gather in Halifax this week for what could be one of the most important premiers meetings in years, with the controversial new federal health funding deal, efforts to trim medical costs and a pan-Canadian energy strategy expected to dominate discussion.

Hosted by Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter, the Council of the Federation meeting comes at a critical time for federal-provincial relations. The new federal health accord which was dropped in the provinces laps last winter natural resource development and equalization are all thorny issues facing Canadas premiers.

The leaders are concerned also that new federal tough-on-crime legislation could download additional costs to the provinces, while looming international trade deals could see provincial drug costs soar.

Several premiers also insist Prime Minister Stephen Harper has a constitutional responsibility to consult more regularly with the provinces and should hold a long-overdue first ministers meeting.

But health care is expected to top the agenda. Premiers will discuss two new reports to be presented to them at the meeting from a joint probe that examined ways to improve patient care, find better value in the $130-billion health care system, and determine the impacts of a new federal health funding plan.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall and Prince Edward Island Premier Robert Ghiz co-chaired a health-care innovation working group of health ministers that will report back on how the provinces can deliver better care and save dollars at the same time.

We have some real specifics to present to the premiers, Wall said in an interview with Postmedia News, adding premiers are tired of broad road maps and want real solutions.

Youre going to see in our recommendations that theyre not driven by costs. In fact, theyre driven by better value and better care, and the two things can live together with greater fiscal efficiency in the health-care system. Thats what were finding.

Gene therapy for lipoprotein lipase deficiency close to approval in Europe

The European Medicines Agency has recommended the use of gene therapy for a rare genetic disease which leaves people unable to properly digest fats, BBC News reported. Before doctors can start treating the disease with gene therapy they must wait for it to be approved byThe European Commission.

According to the BBC, lipoprotein lipase deficiency affects one in a million people. People suffering from lipoprotein lipase deficiencyhave damaged copies of a gene which is essential for breaking down fat. It leads to fat building up in the blood, abdominal pain and life-threatening pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). So much fat can accumulate that the blood looks white rather than red.

Dr. Daniel Gaudet, a professor of medicine at the University of Montreal, told The New York Times,Its the equivalent of having a 10 percent cream in your bloodstream."

With gene therapy, patients are provided with correct copies of defective genes that cause genetic disorders, according to the New York Times.

UniQure, a Dutch company, developed a new gene therapy called Glybera. According to the LA Times, the treatment is injected into the patient's legs in a series of shots at one sitting. Gaudet tested the gene therapy on 27 people in clinical trials. The trails showed that the injections are long-lasting and provide at least partial control of lipoprotein lipase deficiency with no apparent adverse effects.

The European Commission has rejected Glybera three times before due to insufficient evidence of its effectiveness.

What is a futurist? Not a fortune teller, oracle or prophet. Futurists are simply people who take foresight seriously, applying past and emerging trends to envision how our lifestyles and industries will develop in the years ahead.

But the future isnt what it used to be: What was once a field dominated by experts such as Future Shock author Alvin Toffler or artificial-intelligence guru Ray Kurzweil is now becoming one that involves more amateurs, as large-scale information and the processing power to analyze it become more accessible. And thats a welcome development to most of the pros.

Really, anybody who has a prefrontal cortex is a futurist, says Patrick Tucker, communications director of the World Future Society. We spend the vast majority of our time thinking about the future. This is where we plan, where we create actions we are going to commit ourselves to.

Next weekend, Toronto will host the World Future Conference, bringing together people from disparate fields to discuss how the world is changing and how it ought to.

Taking saltwater fish and raising them in a warehouse 500 kilometres away from the sea may not sound appetizing at first.

But putting [fish] indoors in higher-density areas, as unromantic as it sounds, has a lot of benefits, says Josh Schonwald, journalist and author of The Taste of Tomorrow. It eliminates a lot of the problems that have been associated with traditional aquaculture fish escaping and breeding with native populations, as well as unsightly coastlines and a general negative impact on marine ecosystems.

That may be how well get our protein, but what about the flavours of the future what global cuisine will be the next Thai? Mr. Schonwald says our hunger for ethnic exploration will lead us to the one area that has been off the radar for most North Americans: the foods of sub-Saharan Africa, such as chicken yassa, egusi soup, shrimp piri piri, jollof rice and baobab juice.

African fusion [is] already happening in the UK there's a small company called Bim's Kitchen that is introducing African-influenced condiments, like African ketchup spiced with distinctively African peppers, a curried egusi sauce and smoky baobab barbecue sauce.

Exposure to new cuisines can also alter our attractions or aversions to certain tastes, Mr. Schonwald says such as bitterness. In his book, he profiles a man who is trying to introduce radicchio, a bitter salad green enjoyed in Italy, to Americans.

Freedom award call for Wiggins

There are calls for Bradley Wiggins to be given the Freedom of the City of Westminster after his historic Tour de France win.

The 32-year-old cyclist sealed Britain's first Tour victory on Sunday and now councillors want to honour him.

He grew up in Maida Vale and used places such as Hyde Park and Paddington Recreation Ground to train in.

A Westminster City Council spokesman said giving Wiggins the award "is something we are keenly looking at".

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, leader of Westminster Council's Labour group, said: "Bradley Wiggins is the most fantastic sportsman and it all started in Maida Vale.

"Westminster City Council should honour this most dedicated sportsman for his achievement as the first Briton to win the Tour de France, as well as his magnificent Olympic medals.

"Bradley Wiggins is a great role model for young people and the council should award this honour in Olympic year 2012."

One of the Maida Vale councillors, Alastair Moss, Conservative, said: "Bradley Wiggins has scored a historic sporting victory and inspired huge pride across the country - no more so than in his home turf of Westminster and Maida Vale.

"Recognising Bradley's outstanding achievement through the Freedom of Westminster award is something we are keenly looking at."

Beaches reopen after fuel cleanup

All Lake Huron beaches are now open following the cleanup of spilled diesel fuel from the Thursday sinking of the 110-foot dredge barge Arthur J and the 38-foot tug Madison.

The vessels sank off the Michigan shoreline of Lakeport State Beach on Lake Huron.

Cleanup efforts began immediately, which involved Marine Pollution Control and Coast Guard personnel walking the beaches and cleaning up debris that washed ashore from the sunken vessels.

When a 150-ton crane barge arrived from Sault Ste. Marie Saturday morning, salvage efforts began. Due to the weight of the Arthur J, first attempts at bringing up the barge failed. When the Madison was lifted out of the water, a large hole was located near the stern of the vessel. In order to have the tug refloated, salvage crew welded a steel plate over the hole.

As salvage efforts continued, an uncontained oil sheen from the sunken barge was discovered by aircrews in coast guard and Canadian aircraft Saturday.

It is believed that a pocket of oil product escaped the containment during salvage operations of the Arthur J, according to a release by the coast guard. While the Madison tug has been removed from the scene, all remaining oil and fuel aboard the Arthur J was successfully removed Sunday and salvage crews began raising the dredge from its grounded position.

The majority of the recoverable oil has been captured, said the release. Salvage crews removed approximately 3,400 gallons of oily water mixture and 625 gallons of diesel fuel from the sunken dredge.

The cause of the accident is yet to be determined.
