Environmental protection to take centre stage in upcoming Eco Expo Asia

KUCHING: The growing environmental protection industry will be front and centre at the Hong Kong Trade Development Councils (HKTDC) upcoming Eco Expo Asia, to be held from Oct 27 to 30 with support from the HKSARG Environment Bureau.

According to a HKTDC representation during an interview with The Borneo Post, The Eco Expo Asia is the only trade fair on environmental protection in Hong Kong promoting environmental protection at all levels, including Business-to-Business, Business-to-Consumer exchange as well as Business-to-Government interaction.

Apart from marketing the capabilities, product and technologies available in the environmental protection sector, Eco Expo Asia also presents business opportunities and investment projects of Asia and especially the Chinese Mainland, in particular the neighbouring Pearl River Delta. The environmental protection sector had been increasing in importance within China as it was recognised as one of the pillar industries in Chinas 12th Five-Year Programme.

The total investment was estimated to be over US$473 billion during the five-year period and the market was expected to grow at an annual compound rate of 15 to 20 per cent with an industry output value of US$773 billion by 2015.

The mainland envisages that an investment of RMB3.4 trillion will be needed for new environmental protection projects to be implemented during 2011 to 2015.

In particular, priority is given to projects in eight areas that will require as much as RMB1.5 trillion investments in the period. With Hong Kongs close connections with the mainland, its comprehensive financial system, its well-established rule of law and legal regime on intellectual property rights protection, the representative believed that Hong Kong could provide an ideal platform for foreign green service and product providers to enter the market.

As such, the representative noted that the outlook for the environmental protection market in Hong Kong is good.

With the subsequent launch of energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures, demand for eco technologies in the Chinese mainland is on the rise.

Google is pushing its Project Glass. But one CNET writer spends time with a bevy of cutting edge wearable computers, seeing what it's like to live a computerized life.

Zeal Optics Z3 goggles sport a tiny monitor inside to let skiers track their speed, see vertical distance covered, and even map their location when they connect to a computer later.

SEATTLE -- It was an unseasonably warm June evening, the kind of day locals rave about because they come so rarely. At 6 p.m., I hopped on my bike for an evening spin.

My heart-rate quickly raced up to 157 beats per minute as I picked up my pace to 14 miles per hour up a gradual rise in the road. At the same time, my blood-glucose level dropped to 62 milligrams per deciliter, low, but not dangerously so for a non-diabetic. All in all, pretty solid data, given that the night before I slept six hours and 21 minutes, waking for brief periods 21 times during the night.

Welcome to my cyborg life. Google has generated tons of press in recent days with its Project Glass, computerized glasses that lets users take pictures and find information. But it's hardly the only company pursuing wearable computing. And while Project Glass won't be commercially available for another two years at the earliest, there are plenty of companies selling devices that consumers can slip into and strap on to collect reams of data about their daily lives.

To get a glimpse of that future, I strapped on a bunch of those gadgets. Here's what I learned.

In all, the gadgets I tested collectively ran into the thousands of dollars. I was decked out from head --with Zeal Optics Z3 ski googles that track speed and map locations -- to my feet -- with Adidas Resolution running shoes with the company's miCoach Speed_Cell sensor that keeps tabs on speed and distance run. I gathered a ton of information about health and fitness, though it wasn't my most fashion-forward moment. There were times, when wearing everything, I looked like a high school science experiment run amok.

Wearable gadgets have been around for some time. Heart-rate monitors have been standard training devices for athletes for more than a decade. Pods that runners slip into their shoes have been around for years as well. And a new batch of gizmos have emerged that let users keep tabs on the number of steps they've taken, a popular new category that I also sampled.

The business of wearable computing is on the cusp of becoming mainstream. That's because the cost and size of the sensors the devices use has dropped significantly over the years. And the ability to transmit the data those gadgets collect and receive has become seamless as many connect with the mobile smartphones that folks slip into their pockets or purses everyday.

La.'s beaches worst for water quality

A new report from the environmental nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council ranked Louisiana last out of 30 states for its beach water quality.

Samples taken at Louisiana beaches in 2011 found levels of bacteria considered unsafe for swimming 29 percent of the time, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council report. That's the highest in the country.

Clean beaches are vital to our local, regional and national coastal economies, said Steve Fleischli, acting director of the council. If we want to keep our oceans and tourism industries thriving and healthy, we need our local and federal leaders to step up and adopt smart policies that protect our water, our health and our beach businesses.

Beach water pollution can cause a range of illnesses in swimmers including stomach flu, skin rashes, pink eye, ear, nose and throat problems, dysentery, hepatitis, respiratory ailments, neurological disorders and other serious health problems. For senior citizens, small children and people with weak immune systems, these infections can be fatal.

Five Louisiana beaches were listed as repeat offenders for having persistent bacterial contamination problems. Those beaches were all in Cameron Parish, including Constance Beach, Gulf Breeze, Little Florida, Long Beach and Rutherford Beach.

Beaches were ranked with one to five stars depending on their water quality, the frequency of water quality monitoring and public notification when problems came up.

No beaches in Louisiana achieved the best five-star ranking, but beaches at South Padre Island in Texas and Gulf Shores, Ala., did.

The report looked at 26 testing locations in Louisiana, including Fourchon Beach and Grand Isle. Elmer's Island was not tested for bacteria in 2011 because it had only recently opened to the public. Testing will begin on Elmer's Island this year.

Fourchon Beach had a clean slate, with no water samples testing positive for unsafe levels of bacteria. Fourchon, a private beach, is closed to the public because of the BP oil spill. Of the seven locations tested on Grand Isle, waters in the state park tested the worst, exceeding safe bacteria levels 18 percent of the time.

Did a meteor plunge into the ocean near Perth? I’m thinking no. | Bad Astronomy

Ive been getting some emails and tweets alerting me to photos that purport to show the debris trail of a meteor after it apparently plunged into the ocean off the coast of Perth, Australia. After looking at the pictures, Im pretty sure this is not a meteor, but an airplane contrail.

First, the picture, from the Australian news site News.com.au:

Its a lovely photo! It shows the ocean off to the west of Perth, a blue sky, and what appears to be some sort of cloud-like vapor or debris trail. Thats probably not just an average cloud: its very linear, and shows signs of being sheared apart by winds. Cirrus clouds can look like this, but generally arent all alone in a blue sky. There are other types of linear clouds (like alto- and cirrocumulus) but those tend to appear in parallel bands.

The cloud is also relatively low above the Earths surface. In another photo from news.com.au, you can see the faint shadow of the cloud on the sky I have inset that here, with the brightness and contrast stretched. The arrows mark the shadow (the bright blobs are most likely internal reflections in the camera, and the dark spot a piece of dust or something like that on the lens). The picture was taken at sunset, so the Sun was low. The shadow of the trail is being cast on haze and other stuff floating in the air above the cloud. Clearly, the trail isnt all that high above the Earths surface.

This doesnt mean its not from a meteor, necessarily. A big rock plunging into the ocean might leave a trail (technically called a "train") like this. But I dont think thats what were seeing. A big rock burning up in the atmosphere wouldve been really conspicuous, and seen by lots of people especially at sunset near a major city like Perth. Id also expect the train to be much longer than this; big meteors start burning up about 100 kilometers (60 miles) over the Earth, so the train would arc across more of the sky.

And no one saw that? Also, there are no confirmations from anywhere else of an impact or even observations of this. So my skeptic sense is tingling hard.

Also? It just really really looks like a typical airplane contrail! We see these all the time. When a plane flies over the horizon it can leave a contrail looking exactly like this, with perspective making it look like its diving down into the ocean. It gets lit by the setting Sun, so it glows red, orange, or yellow. Thinking parsimoniously using Occams razor and looking at probabilities here whats more likely: an airplane flying away from a big city, or a big rock burning up in our atmosphere that almost no one saw?

Furthermore, contrails have been mistaken for meteors and even missile launches in the past!

And Ill save the best for last: as I was wrapping up writing this post I did a Google search to see if anything new popped up, and sure enough theres an article with a witness saying he saw this cloud for a while before sunset, and it was clearly a contrail from an airplane. I dont put a lot of stock in eyewitness testimony in general, but that fits everything else we know.

Toxicity of Lunar Dust

The formation, composition and physical properties of lunar dust are incompletely characterised with regard to human health. While the physical and chemical determinants of dust toxicity for materials such as asbestos, quartz, volcanic ashes and urban particulate matter have been the focus of substantial research efforts, lunar dust properties, and therefore lunar dust toxicity may differ substantially.

In this contribution, past and ongoing work on dust toxicity is reviewed, and major knowledge gaps that prevent an accurate assessment of lunar dust toxicity are identified. Finally, a range of studies using ground-based, low-gravity, and in situ measurements is recommended to address the identified knowledge gaps. Because none of the curated lunar samples exist in a pristine state that preserves the surface reactive chemical aspects thought to be present on the lunar surface, studies using this material carry with them considerable uncertainty in terms of fidelity.

As a consequence, in situ data on lunar dust properties will be required to provide ground truth for ground-based studies quantifying the toxicity of dust exposure and the associated health risks during future manned lunar missions.

A discussion about artificial intelligence will be the subject of the next Oregon Humanities Think & Drink series.

The third conversation in the four-part 2012 Think & Drink series will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18 at the Mission Theater, 1624 N.W. Glisan St. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

The event will focus on the future of human and artificial intelligence.

Taking part in the conversation will be Mott Green, affiliate professor of earth and space sciences at the University of Washington, and Ramez Naam, a fellow of the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies and author of "More Than Human: Embracing the Promise of Biological Enhancement."

Oregonian reporter Richard Read moderates the series. The event is free, and minors are allowed when accompanied by an adult.

A Promising Basket of Aerospace and Defense Stocks

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you expect the aerospace and defense industry to prosper over the long run due to the seeming inevitability of air travel and wars, the PowerShares Aerospace & Defense ETF (NYSE: PPA) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which companies will perform best, you can use this ETF to invest in a lot of them simultaneously.

The basics ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual fund cousins. The PowerShares ETF's expense ratio -- its annual fee -- is 0.60%. The fund is very small, too, so if you're thinking of buying, beware of occasionally large spreads between its bid and ask prices. Consider using a limit order if you want to buy in.

This ETF has performed reasonably, beating the world markets by a modest margin over the past three and five years. As with most investments, of course, we can't expect outstanding performances in every quarter or year. Investors with conviction need to wait for their holdings to deliver.

With a low turnover rate of 12%, this fund isn't frantically and frequently rejiggering its holdings, as many funds do.

What's in it? This industry is facing some uncertainty, as our nation's financial troubles are leading to cuts in defense spending. Thus, lots of aerospace and defense companies didn't post impressive performances over the past year. (Fortunately, their fortunes may well change in the coming years.)

SAIC (NYSE: SAI) , the eighth-largest government contractor, fell 29%. Shareholders were disappointed recently when the company lost its biggest federal contract, worth up to $4.6 billion, to Lockheed Martin. It's not all bad news, though, as SAIC is still inking contracts, such as one worth up to $36 million with the U.S. Air Force. SAIC will be changing its name soon, too, due to an internal merger, to Science Applications International Corp.

Aerospace and defense parts supplierEsterline Technologies (NYSE: ESL) dropped 22%. In its last quarter, it posted a strong 16% increase in revenue, with its sensors and systems sales more than doubling and its backlog growing. But the company lowered its near-term projections, too. Some think the company may be acquired, but that remains speculation at this point. Folks at the Relational Investors hedge fund, which is Esterline's third-largest shareholder, don't like the company's recent performance and are encouraging the company to consider selling itself.

Computer Sciences (NYSE: CSC) , recent winner of a NASA "Contractor of the Year" award, shed 35%, reporting poor results in its latest quarter and announcing plans to cut costs and begin a turnaround. It has been busy collecting contracts, such as one worth up to $91 million to provide cloud-computing services for the Federal Aviation Administration. It's also expanding into new areas, such as the e-delivery, cloud-based service it's offering to insurance companies.

Industry behemoth Boeing (NYSE: BA) , meanwhile, ended the past 12 months in the black, up 1%. Investors are happy that its long-awaited Dreamliner is finally in production, but some worry about defense cuts, as Boeing gets roughly 40% of its revenue from the U.S. government. Europe's financial woes could hurt Boeing, too, via a slowdown in orders. Still, its future looks promising, partly due to its new fuel-efficient planes, which are extra appealing in these days of high fuel prices.

The big picture A well-chosen ETF can grant you instant diversification across any industry or group of companies -- and make investing in and profiting from it that much easier.

Washington Aerospace Training Center expanding

Gov. Chris Gregoire cut the ribbon on an expansion that will enable the center to accommodate nearly double the number of students learning skills to land jobs in factories and shops.

"We need the WATR Center to come back in two years and expand again," Gregoire told about 75 local and state politicians, educators and community members.

Nearly 800 students have completed 12-week programs at the center's Paine Field location since it opened in June 2010. Roughly 75 percent of those graduates have landed jobs in the industry.

"We're getting students jobs. Jobs, jobs and more jobs," said Jean Hernandez, president of Edmonds Community College, which oversees the center's training program.

Demand for trained aerospace workers isn't likely to stop soon with the Boeing Co. and suppliers speeding up jet production. Boeing hired roughly 10,000 new employees in Washington in 2011 and has added another 3,000 so far in 2012.

"We need the talent," said Wayne Brown, a director for manufacturing and quality for Boeing. "We absolutely need the talent."

Katharine Huey was in the center's first graduating class, in 2010. The facility wasn't completed when Huey began taking courses. But her instructors' enthusiasm made up for it.

After working as a mechanic for about 18 months at Boeing, Huey since has begun helping with training at the jet maker.

"This training changed my life," Huey said of the WATR center.
