NASA announced some exciting news yesterday: apparently, the NationalReconnaissance Office, the agency that looks after the USs spy satellites, had a couple of Hubble-scale space telescopes lying around.

In a warehouse in upstate New York.

In bits and pieces, lacking the requisite solar panels and cameras to make them fully functional, but basically complete, all dressed up with nowhere to go.Why did the NRO have two unused space telescopes, when NASA is barely able to scrape two pennies together? Neither side will answer that question, citing classified information. Go ahead, use your imagination.

But an enterprising NRO official gave NASA a ring, and a little bureaucratic paper-pushing later, hey presto! NASA has two more space telescopes it had a few months ago. Right now,Chandra, Spitzer, and Hubble are in orbit, and the James Webb Space Telescope is supposed to launch in 2018, though its budget woes have been of epic proportions. These new telescopes are essentially satellites with mirrors the same width as Hubbles but a shorter focal length, so they can see a wider stretch of space, and they are likely to be repurposed as part of a mission to explore dark energy, as Julianne Dalcanton notes over at Cosmic Variance.

Its a little wince-inducing, though, to realize that NASA will be lucky if they can scrimp and save enough to get even one of these scopes up into orbit. We dont anticipate ever being rich enough to use both of them, but it sure would be fun to think about,said Paul Hertz, NASAs astrophysics division director, in a conference call on Monday (via Talking Points Memos IdeaLab).

Fun is one word for it; sad is another. But those reservations aside, we wish NASA best of luck and congratulations on this windfallits always exciting to see more resources being funneled towards observing space.

NASA coverage of Venus interrupted due to Australian roadworker's error

MATARANKA, Australia Live NASA coverage of Venus' rare transit of the sun has been interrupted -- by an Australian roadworker.

The bungling worker severed a fiber-optic cable, preventing scientists from streaming live footage to the NASA website from one of the world's best vantage points, in the Northern Territory.

The wire was damaged during roadworks about 10 miles south of Mataranka on Tuesday afternoon, cutting off internet and telephone services across the region.

A spokeswoman for telecommunications company Telstra told The Northern Territory News the cable would not be repaired until around 3:00pm local time Wednesday. Venus is expected to finish its transit at 2:03pm local time.

The next time the planet will be visible passing between earth and the sun with be in 2117.

The Aussie webcast was to have taken place from a school in Alice Springs -- one of only two locations outside the United States that was contributing to the live NASA broadcast of the event. Other feeds were believed to have made up for the Aussie disaster.

"They're transmitting to NASA because they are in the best position in the world to see it," Telstra spokeswoman Jane DeGault said of the interrupted Northern Territory webcast.

"They are understandably upset. Let's hope these services will be restored and some transmission can be sent to NASA."

NASA gets 2 telescopes from spy satellite agency

(Space.com) The United States' spy satellite agency is giving NASA two spare space telescopes free of charge, each potentially more powerful than the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA officials announced today (June 4).

The two spy satellite telescopes were originally built to fly space-based surveillance missions for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), but will be repurposed by NASA for astronomical research instead. Their donation to NASA was revealed in a surprise announcement.

Both NRO space telescopes have a main mirror nearly 8 feet wide (2.4 meters), rivaling the Hubble Space Telescope, and also carry a secondary mirror to enhance image sharpness, according to press reports. NASA's Hubble telescope is a space icon that has been beaming stunning photos to Earth for 22 years.

NASA and NRO officials did not elaborate on the original design or mission for the reconnaissance telescopes, though officials told the Washington Post that the earliest either of the instruments could be recycled into a new space telescope and launched into orbit would be 2020. Finding the funding necessary to refit and launch the telescopes is a major hurdle, officials said.

NASA hopes to use one of the new space telescopes to hunt for mysterious dark energy, an invisible force that scientists think is responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe.

During a media teleconference today, NASA officials said the two telescopes have an appearance similar to the Hubble telescope: They are cylindrical in shape and covered in shiny reflective insulation. The two telescopes do not currently have names, they added.

The Hubble space telescope, which launched in 1990, is the size of a school bus and has become an astronomical icon. But Hubble is also aging. Since its launch, Hubble has been repaired or upgraded five separate times, most recently in 2009 when NASA astronauts paid the last-ever service call on the venerable instrument.

Eventually, Hubble will be decommissioned and then intentionally destroyed by plunging into Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.

Currently, NASA has no plans to replace Hubble, which is primarily an optical observatory, with a similar instrument. The space agency's next big orbital observatory is the James Webb Space Telescope, an infrared-only telescope designed to peer deep into the universe's 13.7 billion-year history.

NASA Joins Girl Scouts Celebrating 100 Years of Inspiration and Empowerment

NASA will mark the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America by hosting a Girl Scouts Rock@NASA event from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. June 8 in the James E. Webb Memorial Auditorium located at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver and two former astronauts, Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and Pam Melroy, will participate. Media are invited to attend.

NASA and the Girl Scouts share a common goal to encourage and educate young girls about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in exciting and innovative ways. The Girl Scouts began in 1912 with only 18 girls. Today, there are 3.2 million girls and adults who are members. In 100 years, the organization has graduated more than 59 million women in the United States.

The Girl Scouts Rock@NASA program will cover aeronautics, science and exploration. Attendees will learn about NASA's missions and careers from scientists and other invited guests and have opportunities to experience hands-on, interactive displays.

NASA will host two sessions based on the age of the attendees.

In the morning session, Stefanyshyn-Piper will speak to younger explorers about some of NASA's missions and discoveries. Attendees will be able to take a picture of themselves on Mars and learn about solar sails and NASA technology in everyday life.

The afternoon session, targeted to Girl Scout cadettes, seniors, and ambassadors, will feature Garver and Melroy. Attendees also will be able to use interactive activities to learn more about NASA and STEM.

PASADENA, Calif., June 5 (UPI) -- NASA says 25 lucky followers of the space agency will be invited to attend a NASA event to coincide with the upcoming landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars.

The NASA Social event will offer people who engage with NASA through Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other social networks the opportunity to tour the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., meet scientists and engineers, participate in news conferences and, if all goes as planned, be at the media site when the first signal of the rover's landing is detected by JPL mission control, a NASA release said Tuesday.

The Curiosity rover will land at Mars' Gale Crater Aug. 6 at approximately 1:31 a.m. EDT for a two-year mission to investigate whether the selected area of Mars offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life or if evidence of it existed.

Registration for the NASA Social event will open at noon EDT Wednesday, June 6, and close at noon EDT Friday, June 8.

NASA said it will randomly select 25 participants from online registrations.

The NASA Social is scheduled to culminate in the landing of the Mars Science Laboratory's Curiosity rover at Mars' Gale crater. The landing is anticipated at approximately 10:31 p.m. PDT Aug. 5 (1:31 a.m. EDT Aug. 6).

The event will offer people who engage with NASA through Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other social networks the opportunity to tour JPL, speak with scientists and engineers, participate in news conferences and, if all goes as planned, be at the media site when the first signal of the rover's landing is detected by JPL mission control. The event also will provide participants the opportunity to interact with fellow tweeps, space enthusiasts and members of NASA's social media team.

JPL has 23 spacecraft and 10 instruments conducting active missions of exploration of Earth, the solar system and the universe beyond. These ventures, including Voyager, Cassini and the Opportunity Mars rover, are enabled by NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN). Managed by JPL, the DSN is an international network of antenna complexes for communications between spacecraft and Earth-based teams that guide them. NASA Social guests will meet team members from some of these missions and tour DSN mission control.

NASA Social registration opens at 9 a.m. PDT (noon EDT) Wednesday, June 6, and closes at 9 a.m. PDT (noon EDT Friday, June 8). NASA will randomly select 25 participants from online registrations.

Cycling in the rain wearing jeans used to be unthinkable, but not any more thanks to innovations in fabric technology.

The new Commuter range from Levi's, designed specifically for the urban cyclist, is water resistant and dirt repellent, while offering just the right amount of stretch for mobility.

Coming in a work shirt, trousers, jeans and trucker jacket, they are an example of the growing trend for performance apparel a blend of function and fashion, where outdoor functionality meets urban style.

One of the key components of the Commuter range is NanoSphere Technology, invented by Swiss textile company Schoeller, which allows water to simply run off the surface of the denim. This also works for ketchup, honey, coffee or red wine. If they don't run off, they can easily be rinsed off. NanoSphere textiles require less frequent washing and can be washed at lower temperatures.

As fashion brands like Levi's make their garments more functional, the trend is reciprocated with streetwear style influencing outdoor and ski products.

Outdoor brand Icebreaker is already on the mark. This winter, two new innovations to be added to its range are Realfleece Nano and merino-insulated soft shell jackets, designed to be worn both in the city and in the outdoors. Icebreaker creative director Rob Achten says the jackets were designed in response to customer demand for stylish, water-resistant merino jackets.

The Realfleece Nano jackets contain tiny nanoparticles that attach themselves to the merino fibre during the textile finishing process, leaving tiny pockets of air to maintain breathability. And while most fabrics have a large surface area for water droplets and dirt particles to cling to, nano particles have a ridged surface that reduces contact area. Water, oil and mud simply run off.

Nanoparticles are also the focus of Victoria University chemistry professor Jim Johnston and his former PhD student and now colleague Dr Kerstin Lucas, who last year pioneered a way of embedding tiny nanoparticles of gold and silver in New Zealand wool, resulting in colourful textiles that have functional and aesthetic benefits.

Together they have formed company Noble Bond Ltd and are part of Creative HQ, Wellington's business incubator. They're now working in partnership with Wools of New Zealand to develop the technology into a business.

Luxury fashion brands and textile companies are now the target of their glittering yarn, which they've named AuLana (Au is the symbol for gold and Lana is Latin for wool). Benefits of AuLana include the ability to create coloured textiles without using traditional synthetic dyes, and the gold can also be reclaimed from the garment.

Jugaad innovators don't plan - they improvise By demonstrating agility, jugaad innovators can deal with unanticipated challenges faster and seize unexpected opportunities-such as changing customer needs-more swiftly than their competitors Jugaad Innovation / Jun 04, 2012, 00:45 IST

Emerging markets are characterized by high volatility. Economic circumstances are constantly changing. Growth rates are often in double digits, and the competitive landscape is often shifting. New laws and regulations are constantly being put into place, and policy is constantly evolving. So jugaad innovators need to experiment as they go along and be willing to try multiple options, rather than adopting one approach at the start and sticking to it thereafter. Unlike their counterparts in Silicon Valley, jugaad innovators do not attempt to work everything out in advance or rely on a business plan to determine the mid- to long-term roadmap for their new ventures. Instead, they improvise their next course of action as circumstances change, and they do so from within a framework of deep knowledge and passion. Their approach is in fact more akin to a jazz band than to an orchestra: everything is improvised, fluid, and dynamic. As such, their strategies are organic and emergent rather than predetermined. Jugaad innovators flexible thinkingtheir ability to improviseserves them especially well when confronted with adversity.

Given their propensity for improvisation, jugaad innovators dont rely on forecasting tools like scenario planning, as many companies do, to assess future risks. They believe in Murphys Lawanything that can go wrong will go wrongso whats the point of anticipating every single obstacle that might appear down the road? Jugaad innovators dont have a Plan B, let alone a Plan C. Rather, when confronted with an unexpected hindrance, they rely on their innate ability to improvise an effective solution to overcome it, given the circumstances at that time.

In 2007, however, local farmers began protesting against the acquisition of land for the factory. The dispute rapidly escalated into a political issue and caught Tata Motors off guard. As the protests intensified through 2008, Ravi Kant, then managing director of Tata Motors (and later its non-executive vice chairman) made a bold decision. He set aside his firms prior manufacturing plans and swiftly shifted the production of the Nano to Sanand, in the investor-friendly state of Gujarat, on the other side of the country. He didnt hire a management consultant to advise him on the move; he just trusted his instinct that this was the right thing to do, given the circumstances. In just fourteen months (compared to the expected twenty-eight months for the Singur plant), Tata Motors built a new factory in Sanand, Gujarat. The new factory began production of Nanos in June 2010.

One year later, Ravi Kant and his team had to demonstrate the ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances yet again: the Nanos werent selling as well as expected. Monthly sales had fallen well below the optimistic forecast of twenty thousand units. Rather than being disappointed by the Nanos lackluster performance, Tata Motors leadership used this early market feedback to improvise a plan to shore up sales. Ratan Tata originally envisioned a distributed supply chain model whereby Tata Motors would dispatch flat packs to local entrepreneurs across the country, who would do the final assembly of Nanos close to customers thus creating gainful employment in local communities. With flagging sales, however, this original vision had to be revised: Tata Motors executives went back to the drawing board and quickly revamped Nanos logistics network to a more straightforward one, which involved manufacture and assembly at one site in Gujarat, and distribution through a traditional dealer network throughout the country. But again Tata Motors hit a snag: rural customers such as farmers were not venturing into Tata Motors showrooms in small towns. Among other things, they felt intimidated by dealers dressed in suits and ties.

This setback led Tata Motors management to redesign their rural showrooms to make them more informal-for example by staffing them with casually attired salesmen who could pitch the Nano to Indian farmers over a cup of chai. Tata Motors also launched a nationwide TV campaign and began offering consumer financing at highly attractive rates to lure frugal Indian consumers. By constantly adapting and refining its business modeland implementing changes within weeks, not monthsTata Motors invigorated sales of the Nano, which, although still lower than expected, are gradually beginning to pick up. Indeed, it is very likely that the future success of the car will depend on more such quick adaptation and flexible thinking by the managers of Tata Motors.

Jugaad innovators experiment with multiple ways to reach a goal Unpredictability is the norm in emerging markets. Because of diversity and rapid change, it is hard to predict how consumers will respond to new products and services-and how new business strategies will perform in, say, rural markets. Jugaad innovators may have a single-minded vision of where they want to get to, but they must be willing to try different paths to get there. Specifically, they must be willing to keep experimenting in order to attain their goalsand they must be flexible enough to quickly switch from one path to another along the way.

Dr Mohan, for instance, experimented with a number of different ways to frugally yet effectively engage rural communities both as consumers (patients) and employees. When he first sent his expensive technicians from his city hospital to work in remote villages, he found that these techniciansalthough highly competentwould soon leave, wanting to return to city life. Learning this, he developed a training curriculum in his city hospital to impart to young men and women from villages the basic skills they need as healthcare workers. After about three months, these newly trained healthcare professionals would return to their rural homes, where they were more likely to want to remain. This in turn helped reduce costs and turnover in Dr Mohans model. Dr Mohan had a similar experience with his attempts to work with non-traditional partners to develop a cost-effective tele-medicine platform. Although he initially contemplated partnering with more typicaland expensivetechnology providers, Dr Mohan eventually linked up with ISRO, which provides his roaming tele-medicine van with a free satellite uplink to his clinic in the city of Chennai.

Jugaad innovators act with speed and agility In emerging markets, new threats and opportunities can emerge from out of the blue. This forces jugaad innovators to not only think but also act flexibly. By demonstrating agility, jugaad innovators can deal with unanticipated challenges faster and seize unexpected opportunitiessuch as changing customer needsmore swiftly than their competitors. Zhang Ruimin is one such jugaad innovator who thinks and acts quickly.

Zhang, is the CEO of Haier, a Chinese consumer goods company that is making appliance makers like GE and Whirlpool nervous. Under Zhangs leadership, Haier has, in the space of a decade, made huge inroads into North American and European markets by selling quality appliances at lower prices than those of Western suppliers like Whirlpool and GE. Armed with its value for money strategy, Haier is disrupting the consumer goods market not only in mainstream segments like air-conditioners and washing machines, but also in niche segments like wine coolers. For instance, Haier launched a $704 (Rs 35,200) wine cooler that is less than half the cost of industry leader La Sommelires product. Within two years of this launch, Haier has grown the market by a whopping 10,000 percent and now controls 60 percent of the US market by value. By leveraging its value for money strategy, Haier has also rapidly established a strong presence in the Indian home appliances market, where it commands 8 percent of market share. In coming years, Haier aims to grow its Indian market share to at least 10 percent and achieve Rs 4,500 crore in revenue and become one of the top five brands in India by 2014.

Gargi Pare from Ujjain won the Second Award from the LANXESS Corporation for her project on Nano Zero Valent Iron: solution for coloured wastewater remediation. We congratulate Gargi Pare and all the students from India on their success at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, said Ashutosh Chadha, Director Corporate Affairs Group, Intel South Asia. Gargi and all the other finalists this week, further demonstrate how a background of STEM (science, engineering, technology, and math) education creates the breeding ground for creativity and ingenuity that will help solve the pressing issues of the future. New nano-research leads to sensors that detect contaminants in water

(Phys.org) -- Many organic contaminants in the air and in drinking water need to be detected at very low-level concentrations. Research published by the laboratory of Prashant V. Kamat, the John A. Zahm Professor of Science at the University of Notre Dame, could be beneficial in detecting those contaminants.

The Kamat laboratory uses Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy to make use of silver nanoparticles to increase the sensitivity limit of chemical detection. Researchers in this study have prepared a semiconductor-graphene-metal film that has distinct advantages: The absorption of organic molecules on the films graphene surface increases the local contaminant concentration adjacent to silver nanoparticles.

The researchers have investigated the use of graphene oxide films in which the semiconductor titanium dioxide (TiO2) and metal nanoparticles are deposited on opposite sides of the graphene surface. We are currently working toward the detection of environmental contaminants at even lower levels, Kamat says. Careful control of metal size and loading will be the key to optimize strips for testing water quality.

Under UV illumination, the electrons from TiO2 are captured by the graphene oxide film and shuttled across the film to reduce metal ions into metal nanoparticles. This electron-hopping process across the graphene oxide film allows the design of a side-separated semiconductor-metal nanoparticle architecture.

Graphene, a two-dimensional crystalline form of carbon, is known for its remarkable mechanical strength, very high thermal and electrical conductivity and broad variety of applications. While the conducting properties of graphene sheets deposited on various substrates are well understood, the Kamat group has demonstrated that the transport of electrons is not limited to the 2-D plane. Here, the hopping of electrons from one side of the graphene allows for the side-selective deposition of silver nanoparticles.

Another potential application is in the area of photocatalytic generation of solar fuels," Kamat says. "For example, having semiconductor nanoparticles on one side of a graphene sheet and a metal catalyst on the other side, one can create a hybrid assembly that can selectively split water into oxygen and hydrogen.
