It’s Time For You to Join My Robot Nation

I love retro-looking robots. The old covers of Amazing Stories and other pulp novels are full of examples of both evil robots on the rampage and helpful companions on long journeys across the galaxy. I cant put my finger on exactly what it is about clunky, humanoid-shaped robots with bucket heads, spinning gears on their chests, and pincers instead of fingers, but I just like it. Ill take Robby the Robot over David the Android as a personal assistant any day of the week.

Ive built quite a few robots in my day many of them Lego robots but a few have been soldered up in my workshop but none of them have a retro style. Most of them are wheel-based robots with no humanoid features other than maybe the eye-like ultrasonic sensors used for obstacle avoidance. Ive pretty much accepted the fact that the robots that exist in my minds eye will remain there hobbling along in my imagination as their chest lights blink random patterns of nonsense. But then I got lucky and met the team of My Robot Nation at Maker Faire a few weekends back. Now those imaginary robots have an actual chance to see the light of day.

My Robot Nation is awesome. You use your browser (must be WebGL-supported like Chrome or Firefox, but it can be turned on in Safari) to basically select the body parts of your imaginary robot and then drag and drop components such as bolts and panels and tools and other gizmos onto the body. You can color your robot and even create your own custom colors if you dont see what you like. And finally, you can apply stamps (think of them as stickers) that provide a bit more customization. When youre happy with your robots final design, you give your robot a name and select the size (from 2 all the way up to 6 in height) and then place your order your design is added to the My Robot Nation robot database for the world to see. My Robot Nation allows visitors to view its large database of customer designs but does not allow anyone to place an order for other users designs. This means your robot is one-of-a-kind! Only you will be able to hold the actual 3D, full-color robot in your hands.

Its really cool. Let me show you.

First, visit myrobotnation.com to start the process. Click the Make My Robot button in the center of the screen.Next, youll want to read over the basic instructions before you begin after reading the instructions youll see a basic screen that offers up custom body parts such as head, torso, left and right arms (they can be different) and legs or treads. Theres a Randomize Robot button that will allow you to have random robots generated using a mix of all the body parts, but to make the robot really your own, youll want to go through each of the heads, torsos, etc. to find the ones that suit you best. Ill tell you right now that I spent almost 30 minutes playing with different legs, arms, torso, and head. That was just to get the basic shape of the robot I hadnt even started with the color and stamp process yet!

Once I established the basic shape for Bruzer (the name of my robot) I selected the Parts button (represented by a small hex nut). Keep in mind that as you color and add parts that you can still go back and change basic body parts at any time. The Parts options are really amazing. There are eight different categories (they work like menus along the top of the Parts window) including Visors & Widgets, Robot Eyes, and Pipes & Circuits. Again, I probably spent about 30 to 40 minutes alone just adding small bolts to Bruzers shoulders, trying out different chest grilles, and tweaking the feet and head. (I ended up skipping the Robot Eyes category and instead choosing a three star gear for Bruzers single eye.)

Next came the color application. As I mentioned, you can create custom colors if you like, but I stuck with the basic colors. Clicking on certain key parts will apply color to only a portion of the body part. For example, clicking on Purple and then clicking on Bruzers legs doesnt color the entire leg purple. It only colored the inner portions leaving the feet and knees white and ready for another color. The color selection and application tool is very accurate but keep in mind that individual body parts have areas that are linked together, so if you click on a knee for example, it will color the two knees but also the top of the legs that meet the waistline. Its a bit hard to explain, so take a look at the next screen capture and youll see how the waist, knees and feet are color-locked. The inner tubes of the legs are also color-locked. Same with the inner tubes of the arms.

Seagate Reinvents Backup for Your Digital Life

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Seagate Technology plc (STX) today introduced Backup Plus storage devices its reinvented consumer storage product family that delivers the easiest setup, one-click backup and the ability to save and share your content on Facebook and Flickr.

Seagate Backup Plus hard drives are newly designed external storage that work interchangeably with both Windows and Apple computers and deliver new features to protect, share and save nearly every aspect of ones digital life. These products come loaded with the new hassle-free Seagate Dashboard software for one-click local backup making it easier than ever to eliminate excuses or apprehensions about backing up ones most valuable digital content. Seagate Backup Plus products are the worlds first external hard drives to provide backup for content on social networks, such as Facebook and Flickr. Storing a local duplicate copy of photos from social networks is now as easy as backing up files on your computer. Seagate Backup Plus will provide the peace of mind that every aspect of ones digital life is safe from loss.

Backing up data is an absolute necessity that many people put off until after its too late. According to a 2011 study by Parks Associates less than one-quarter of the households in the survey have a weekly backup plan for their systems and only 4% are diligent enough to manually perform a backup on a daily basis.1

The idea of providing a backup of photos and videos from Facebook is an interesting one, which I believe may help people come to realize the importance of maintaining multiple copies of any digital asset regardless of where it is stored, said Brett Sappington, director of research for Parks Associates. Social media has become a massive repository for personal digital content, and most consumers have not likely considered the possibility of losing access to those shared memories.

Seagate Backup Plus hard drives featuring the new Seagate Dashboard backup software remove the barriers to performing backup and content preservation by making it as easy as possible. With just a click of an icon, computer files are replicated onto a Backup Plus drive. The Seagate Dashboard included on Backup Plus also provides a single click path to Save (download) and Share (upload) personal photos and videos on Facebook and Flickr.

According to a recent survey commissioned by Seagate and conducted online by Harris Interactive from May 22-24, 2012, more than half (54%) of U.S. adults personally have and/or know someone who has lost files. Over one-quarter (27%) of U.S. adults personally have lost files and found that it was upsetting for them. While almost all (97%) of those surveyed were identified as computer owners; only 11% have a continuous backup plan and only 10% have a daily backup plan.2

Backing up needs to be an essential part of everyones digital life. Nearly everything that is dear to us is now in a digital format; from tax documents, to emails, to family photos and video, many of these files can not be recreated in the event of an accidental loss or system failure, said Scott Horn, vice president of Marketing at Seagate. Seagate is in the business of keeping digital content and files protected in every aspect, whether it is in the cloud, stored on PC or with our external consumer products. Backup Plus is a product that eliminates the barriers to protecting these digital assets. The new Dashboard delivers a simple and complete backup experience with the added benefit of saving photos and video stored on Facebook and other social networks.

A Versatile Storage Device

In 2010, Seagate adopted the Universal Storage Module (USM) standard, which enables consumers to easily add the newest Mac and PC connection capabilities to their Seagate storage product even if these technologies are introduced later. To add yet another level of versatility, Seagate has introduced a way to have the companys external storage products work cross-platform with both Mac and Windows operating systems without reformatting.

New Data Presented at the Society for Nuclear Medicine Annual Meeting Supports Efficacy Profile of Imaging Agent [18F …

MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Data presented at the Society for Nuclear Medicine (SNM) Annual Meeting shows that uptake of the investigational imaging agent [18F]flutemetamol correlates with a beta amyloid in vivo1 biopsy and can be quantified using a PET-only registration method.2 Data from other studies show that [18F]flutemetamol uptake is inversely related to measures of cognitive function in non-demented older adults3. Additionally, the [18F]flutemetamol dosimetry profile is comparable to that of most PET diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals4 and the biodistribution attributes in Japanese and Caucasian subjects is comparable. 5 [18F]Flutemetamol is a PET imaging agent in development for the detection of beta amyloid, which could add value to current diagnostic tools used by physicians to evaluate neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimers disease (AD).

The accumulation of beta amyloid in the brain is believed to play a role in the degeneration of neurons in AD and is one of several pathological characteristics implicated in its development. Currently, AD is confirmed by histopathological identification of core features, including beta amyloid plaques, in postmortem brain samples.6Targeted amyloid imaging agents are being studied to determine their ability to help physicians detect amyloid deposition in living humans.

Data from studies featured at the meeting in Miami show that:

Flutemetamol may prove to be a clinically valuable component of a broader diagnostic workup that neurologists use when assessing patients with cognitive impairments, who possibly have Alzheimers disease, said Jonathan Allis, General Manager, PET, GE Healthcare, Medical Diagnostics. Results from these studies support the potential role of [18F]flutemetamol in helping physicians detect amyloid deposits in the brain, and support our application for regulatory approval.

[18F]Flutemetamol is one part of a broad portfolio of diagnostic solutions that GE Healthcare is currently developing in the Alzheimers field. The company is taking a comprehensive approach to understanding AD through its ongoing research to uncover the causes, risks, and physical effects of the disease. GE Healthcares global commitment to advance clinical knowledge and provide a variety of technologies to aid in the fight against this epidemic may assist physicians in the acceleration of diagnosis and improvement of treatment decisions in all stages of the disease.

The company already offers a broad portfolio of imaging resources, which support accurate visualization of the signs of neurodegenerative diseases via state-of-the-art scanners - including MRI, PET, and CT - that deliver clear visualization of the brain.More specifically, our portfolio today includes cyclotrons and chemistry systems to manufacture PET imaging agents, PET and MR scanners to scan patients, and image analysis software to interpret the results.

GE Healthcare has been a key contributor to the Alzheimers Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) since its inception. The company also plays a primary role in PredictAD, an EU-funded research project to develop solutions to enable earlier diagnosis of AD, and in the Coalition Against Major Diseases (CAMD).

Additionally, the combination of GE Healthcares diverse business offerings positions the company well to offer an integrated global diagnostics solution to assist the pharmaceutical industry in its development of the next generation of therapies. To that end, the company is working with potential partners in the pharmaceutical industry to understand their strategic needs and design solutions, and help provide imaging support for pivotal therapy trials.

Medical school breaks ground on $5M expansion

Medical school breaks ground on $5M expansionBy Molly RosbachYakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences is breaking ground this morning on a 22,000-square-foot expansion that's set to be completed by next summer.

The $5 million "Phase II" addition to Butler-Haney Hall has been planned since the university was first founded, and is being paid for by donors, like the rest of the school. The added space is required for the medical school to receive full accreditation and to expand its current 75-student enrollment by up to 60 students per class.

"Phase II was always planned, from the time we built Phase I. We probably would have built it much earlier, except for the economy changing," said Dr. Lloyd Butler, president of PNWU. "Now, we're in the wonderful position where the school and the community support are ready for us to complete this Phase II expansion in preparation for our request to increase our enrollment."

So far, about $1.5 million is paid for: $1 million from the Osteopathic Foundation of Central Washington and more than $500,000 from community donations. School officials expect to have the full cost of the building raised by August 2013.

The expansion is set to be finished next May followed by some separate remodeling on the interior of Butler-Haney Hall during the summer.

Loofburrow Wetch Architects worked on the building design for much of the past year, and the project went out to local contractors to bid in mid-April. In mid-May, G H Moen LLC was selected for the job.

In the addition, the school will have two new, 150-seat auditorium classrooms, which open up to form one 300-seat classroom. There will also be more office space for professors and support staff, a small prep kitchen and additional student spaces, such as an atrium, a food vending area and several bathrooms.

"This expansion will allow us to better meet our mission of producing primary care physicians for the Pacific Northwest," Butler said.

The added space will also make it easier for the university to host community functions and hold classes for continuing medical education, which all providers must take to stay up to date on new and developing medical procedures and technologies.

OU to open med-school branch near Cleveland

By Encarnacion Pyle

The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday June 12, 2012 6:58 AM

People who want to attend medical school in the Cleveland area soon will have another choice.

Ohio University and the Cleveland Clinic announced yesterday that they are teaming up to open a $49.1 million medical-college campus in the Cleveland suburb of Warrensville Heights to fill a growing need for primary-care doctors in northeastern Ohio.

The extension campus will be developed in a building of the Cleveland Clinics South Pointe Hospital, a 179-bed, acute-care community teaching hospital that has served the citys southeastern suburbs since 1957. Ohio University and the Cleveland Clinic have worked together to train physicians for the past 35 years, and this agreement will build upon that relationship, officials said.

Together, we are striving to be the best at what we do, and we think this will help both of us do just that, OU President Roderick J. McDavis said.

The campus is expected to open with 32 students in July 2015.

Instead of having to take their first two years in Athens, students will be able to complete all four years of their medical education in northeastern Ohio, said Dr. Jack Brose, dean of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

It makes sense for the university to expand into northeastern Ohio because more than a quarter of its medical-school applicants come from the Cleveland area, Brose said. About 80percent of the schools graduates practicing primary care in the area also are trained there.

OU is working on a similar, $24 million medical college campus in Dublin with OhioHealth.

Ohio University to operate medical school at Cleveland Clinic's South Pointe Hospital

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio -A new medical school, an extension of Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, will open at Cleveland Clinic's South Pointe Hospital.

The Clinic and OU, which announced the affiliation Monday, will invest a combined $49 million to address the growing shortage of primary care doctors in Ohio.

The agreement builds upon a long-standing relationship between the Clinic and the Athens-based medical school, which have partnered to train physicians for the past 35 years. South Pointe Hospital is one of the largest osteopathic teaching hospitals in the state and OU students have done third- and fourth-year clinical rotations there for decades.

The school also further enhances the reputation of northeast Ohio as one of the nation's leading medical centers.

The first class of 32 medical students is scheduled to begin August 2015, assuming approvals by the American Osteopathic Association Council on Osteopathic College Accreditation and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.

Osteopathic physicians and medical doctors both attend four years of medical school. They complete their training during the same residency programs and pass the same licensing exams. The difference is in the teaching style and focus during medical school.

Osteopathic schools instruct students to look at the whole patient, not just symptoms, an approach now embraced by medical schools. Osteopathic students also are educated in osteopathic manipulative treatment, which involves manual diagnosis and treatment. Not all osteopathic physicians use that in their practice.

Most osteopathic doctors specialize in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics, OU officials said.

OU will spend $36 million, which includes renovating 60,000 square feet in a clinical and office building on the South Pointe Hospital campus and hiring faculty and staff. The Clinic's contribution of $13 million will go toward building renovations as well as medical education support. That amount includes $5 million from the private, non-profit Brentwood Foundation, which is dedicated to the advancement of osteopathic medicine. The foundation is also providing a $6 million grant for graduate medical education.

Liberty Global Weighs Bid for KPN’s Belgian Unit, CEO Fries Says

LIBOR TRADERS AVOID CRIMINAL CHARGES IN BRITISH PROBE

By Cornelius Rahn - 2012-06-12T10:44:29Z

Liberty Global Inc. (LBTYA) Chief Executive Officer Mike Fries said he will take a look at Royal KPN NV (KPN)s Belgian unit that the Dutch phone company has put up for sale.

Well take a look at it, whether its something well do is hard to say, Fries said in an interview in Cologne today. We looked at Switzerland too when Orange was sold, and we didnt do that.

KPN, the largest Dutch phone operator, in April began a review of the future of the Belgian BASE division, which people familiar with the matter said may fetch about 1.8 billion euros ($2.3 billion) in a sale. Private equity firms including Bain Capital LLC and CVC Capital Partners Ltd. are among those that may make an offer, people said at the time.

Liberty Global, billionaire John Malones cable company, controls Belgian cable television operator Telenet Group Holding NV. (TNET) KPN, based in The Hague, Netherlands, is seeking to fend off an 8 euro-a-share bid for a stake of as much as 27.7 percent from Carlos Slims America Movil (AMXL) SAB.

Its never an easy decision, but we owe it to our shareholders to take a look at it, Fries said today. He declined to say what a decision to bid for BASE will depend on.

Liberty Mutual Insurance Renews Sponsorship of Boston’s 4th of July Tradition, The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Boston-based Liberty Mutual Insurance, a leading global property and casualty insurer, today announced that it would renew its sponsorship of Bostons nationally-acclaimed 4th of July tradition, The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, through 2015. The three-year sponsorship agreement with Boston 4 Celebrations, the organization that produces the event, totals approximately $8 million. Liberty Mutual Insurance, headquartered in Boston since 1912, and with more than 4,500 employees in 30 offices across Massachusetts, first began its sponsorship of The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular in 2005.

This years concert will feature Conductor Keith Lockhart and The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, joined by Academy Award and GRAMMY Award-winning superstar Jennifer Hudson. Emceed by Emmy Award-winning actor and Lowell, Mass. native Michael Chiklis, the event will air locally on WBZ-TV from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., followed by a national CBS broadcast from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The entire concert will be broadcast in HD (high definition), courtesy of Liberty Mutual Insurance. In addition, the final 20 minutes of the broadcast, featuring the spectacular fireworks display, will be presented commercial free by Liberty Mutual Insurance.

"In Liberty Mutual Insurance's 100th anniversary year, we could not imagine a better time to reaffirm our support for Bostons Fourth of July tradition," said David Long, Chief Executive Officer and President, Liberty Mutual Insurance. "For 39 years, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular has brought together family and friends from across the country to our hometown, where they enjoy a free concert, watch an outstanding fireworks display, and salute the brave men and women who make it possible for us to celebrate. It is an honor to sponsor a tradition that so vibrantly captures the spirit of Independence Day, and were proud to share it with the millions of television viewers across the country."

Liberty Mutual Insurances continued sponsorship will preserve a 39-year tradition that offers a free concert to an estimated 500,000 people who visit Bostons Charles River Esplanade on July 4th. Worth noting, approximately one-third of the concerts attendees are tourists from outside New England, who come to celebrate and enjoy Boston as a summer destination.

"We're thrilled to continue our long-standing partnership with Liberty Mutual Insurance, which allows us to continue to bring the Boston Pops, fireworks and this patriotic event to all free of charge for a fourth decade," said Event Founder and Executive Producer David G. Mugar. "We look forward to producing this Boston tradition for many years to come for the families of Boston and New England.

Added Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart: "It takes a great deal of support to present this country's greatest Fourth of July concert, so we are thrilled that Liberty Mutual Insurance has generously renewed its sponsorship of one of this city's signature events the July 4 Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. We hope every Boston neighborhood and visitors near and far will join us, with host Michael Chiklis and singing sensation Jennifer Hudson, along the banks of the Charles River for this spectacular day celebrating our country's birth."

LIBOR TRADERS AVOID CRIMINAL CHARGES IN BRITISH PROBE

Widespread U.S. unhappiness with the government would seem to call for a blockbuster election, such as the one we had exactly a century ago, when both candidates offered sweeping plans for public renewal.

An election fought over such visions makes more sense than our current jobs-growth donnybrook. The president has far more control over the federal government than over the economy. The 1912 election even provides a template for contention, with one candidate urging a Hamiltonian platform of reform through big government, and the other supporting (at least in the campaign) a progressive libertarianism.

Today, just 19 percent of Americans say they trust the government most of the time or more. Only 41 percent agree that the government is really run for the benefit of all the people.

President Barack Obama was elected in 2008 as a reformer who connected the recession with the absence of sensible oversight that can occur when special interests put their thumb on the scale. Two years later, the Tea Party rode a similar surge of anti-governmental anger fueled by the financial bailout and health-care reform or, as Sarah Palin put it, the collusion of big government and big business and big finance to the detriment of all the rest.

This unhappiness mirrors the mood in 1912, when a swath of the U.S. also believed that special interests had subsumed the state. Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt were Progressives who railed against the shaping of our legislation in the interest of special bodies of capital and those who organize their use (Wilsons words) and politicians serving the great special interests of privilege (Roosevelts words). More than 75 percent of the U.S. votes cast in 1912 went to Wilson or Roosevelt or the Socialist Eugene V. Debs. The Republican candidate, William Howard Taft, received less than a quarter of the votes.

The election was the culmination of a wave of reform in the late 19th century, fueled by the malfeasance of politicians such as Boss Tweed. His archenemy, Samuel J. Tilden, ran on the 1876 Democratic ticket pledging to fight the corrupt centralism that had infected States and municipalities with the contagion of misrule, and locked fast the prosperity of an industrious people in the paralysis of hard times. For Tilden-era reformers, government would be fixed if civil-service reform replaced bad people with good people.

By the late 19th century, reformers came to blame the whole system, not just individual politicians. Muckrakers, such as Lincoln Steffens, uncovered the business leaders who funded the political machines. The transport magnate Robert Snyder, for example, paid $250,000 to St. Louis legislators in return for a traction franchise that he rapidly resold for $1.25 million. Corporate chieftains were rumored to run the U.S. Senate, as depicted in a splendidly vicious 1889 Puck cartoon. Some fad- like reforms sought more democracy, such as the referendum and judicial recall powers, and some involved less, such as replacing elected mayors with professional city managers.

Today, antipathy toward Wall Streets political clout and the bailout gets mixed together with essentially unrelated claims of other financial-sector misbehavior, such as credit- card fees. A century ago, hostility toward bribery and influence was also combined with resentment of other corporate misdeeds, such as Jay Goulds stock-market manipulations and Andrew Carnegies strike-breaking at the Homestead mill. Ida Tarbell lavished poisonous ink on John D. Rockefeller and his Standard Oil Co., which used its alliance with the railroads to shut out rivals.
