How to make your genome public domain | Gene Expression
I just got a request from someone how to do this. Honestly I really don’t know, I’m not a lawyer, and lawyers make the simple complex. Great if you’re an innocent guy accused of a dastardly crime, but not so great when you’re trying to do something simple with minimal hassle. So it’s really a question for everyone out there. I just went to the Creative Commons website and filled out a form and dumped their short legal statement. Is this kosher? Will a lawyer sue me for putting my genotype in the public domain? (I’m being facetious!) Comments welcome. A few people on twitter have thrown out the idea of having a full-service website which serves as a repository for genotypes which people want to put into the public domain.
Frank Wolf Doesn’t Like China
Wolf Statement At U.S. - China Commission Hearing On Military and Civil Space Programs in China
"Most countries expanding their space programs are strong U.S. allies that are primarily interested in advancing science research or building a commercial space industry. The Chinese, however, do not fall into this category. Over the last decade, China has developed its space program at a surprising pace. In less than 10 years the Chinese have gone from launching their first manned spacecraft to unveiling plans last week for an advanced Chinese space station designed to rival the International Space Station."
STS-134 Mission Proceeds With Countdown
NASA Shuttle MMT Green Lights Continuing Endeavour Countdown
"The shuttle Mission Management Team is giving space shuttle Endeavour's launch team the green light to continue the countdown for Monday's 8:56 a.m. EDT liftoff. The MMT met this afternoon at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and reviewed how launch preparations for Endeavour's STS-134 mission are progressing. During a news conference on NASA Television following the MMT, Shuttle Launch Director Mike Leinbach said the countdown is going extremely well and the team is ready to go."
Magnetic Waves Bouncing off of Io Helps Measure the Magma Inside | 80beats
What’s the News: Jupiter’s moon Io is more volcanically active than any other object in our solar system, releasing 30 times more heat than Earth through volcanism. It’s thought that Jupiter’s gravity pulls so hard on the moon and causes so much friction that the resulting thermal energy melts a huge amount of underground rock, feeding Io’s 400 active volcanoes.
For years, astronomers have debated whether Io’s spewing lava comes from isolated pockets of magma or a layer that spans the entire moon. Astronomers have now peered into Io’s interior for the first time, discovering that it has a global sea of magma roughly 30 miles thick. “It turns out Io was continually giving off a ‘sounding signal’ in Jupiter’s … magnetic field that matched what would be expected from molten or partially molten rocks deep beneath the surface,” lead researcher Krishan Khurana told Wired.
How the Heck:
As NASA’s Galileo spacecraft flew by Jupiter nearly a decade ago, it detected distortions in the planet’s magnetic field. “Just like the waves beamed from an airport metal detector bounce off ...
Stem Cells Taken From Adults and Reprogrammed May Be Rejected as Foreigners | 80beats
Mouse embyronic stem cells
What’s the News: Reprogrammed stem cells—cells taken from an adult and turned back into stem cells—can be rejected by the body, at least in mice, suggests a new Nature study. Donated tissues and organs are often attacked by a patient’s immune system, since reprogrammed stem cells can be made from a patient’s own skin, researchers had hoped these cells offered a way to avoid such rejection by letting patients, in essence, donate tissue to themselves. But the new finding may be a significant setback to what is a promising line of treatment.
How the Heck:
Researchers took embryonic stem cells and reprogrammed stem cells—called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells—from two strains of mice. The mice in each strain were genetically identical to each other, so that mice within a strain would essentially recognize each other’s cells as their own.
As expected, mice rejected embryonic stem cells from the other strain, but not from their own strain. Embryonic stem cells from their own strain grew and formed teratomas, clumps of differentiating tissues that are a sign the stem cells are doing well and able to form various adult tissues.

Tennessee Democrats protest Geert Wilders speech
Object to hatred of Muslim Terrorists
by Susie Robbins & Eric Dondero
On Thursday, Dutch Parliamentarian and Party of Freedom leader Geert Wilders was the guest speaker at two events in Nashville, Tennessee. He came to the US to speak on the dangers of increasing Islamization, open immigration, and Radical Muslim violence against the West.
In the evening, over 2,000 attended his speech at the Cornerstrone Church, north of Nashville. It was organized by the Tennessee Freedom Coalition. But a smaller, more intimate event was sponsored by the Williamson County Republican Party earlier in the day. About 50 attended for outdoor BBQ, and a chance to meet Wilders in person inside, one on one.
The events were not without controversy. The alternative weekly Nashville Scene called the Cornerstone gathering a "hate fest."
At the GOP event, a handful of protesters on the 'other side' of Main Street from the Willamson County Republican Party Headquarters held placards and signs - "No outside agitators here - photos of Osama Bin Laden and Bible Scriptures - Geert Wilders take your hate back home - SHAME - I object." They were respectful and calm yet convinced Geert Wilders is filled with hate and they stand for love.
One protester even held a sign suggesting that the killing of Bin Laden by US forces was not justified; rather, we ought to show love for our enemies.
They confirmed to us, that they were members of the Williamson County Democrat Party.
Peter Burr, Chairman of the Williamson County Democrat Party in a column in the Tennsseean earlier that day, called Wilder's visit a "blatant incitement of hatred."
The Tennesseean also reported:
The Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a statement condemning Wilders’ visit to Tennessee and asking state and local Republican officials to repudiate the decision to “honor one of the world’s leading Islam-haters.”
In a personal interview during the GOP sponsored event, Wilders was asked what he thought of the protestors outside. He said, "I am very happy they are standing there."
He went on to say that in the Netherlands, there is no Freedom of Speech amendment and he is jealous of that right we have in the US. He was glad the protestors were there, peacefully having their say. His wish was that they would engage him in debate, however, and not hold an uniformed protest.
