Unlike Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Kuwait does not yet have a ban or looming ban in place for BlackBerry smartphones and associated services. But it could, as Kuwaiti officials have today expressed "moral and security" concerns about the devices. More »

STATCOM DC Capacitor Calculation
Can you please help me? I am currently writing my dissertation on STATCOM Control. I would like to ask what is the methodology of replacing the DC Voltage in the STATCOM input with a DC Capacitor. The simulations are run on the PSCAD software.

This is the first of what I hope will be a new series on this blog, providing an overview of key topics that I find myself drawn to again and again.
The idea for this has been germinating for a while now, not least because it seemed a shame that old posts get forgotten in the mists of time. Much has been written about the importance of context in modern science journalism – providing the necessary background so that readers can put new discoveries in their broader context. To achieve this, I considered doing topic pages like those that many newspaper sites do, but I (and others) find the automated nature of these pages to be ultimately unfulfilling. You need some sort of human editorial control to make them useful.
At a recent blogging talkfest, someone in the audience asked about whether blog posts could be aggregated into an educational resource, like a textbook. The idea seemed promising but the disparity of style across different blogs, and the rubbish quality of most blog search engines, makes this a difficult venture. But these primers, hopefully, address these shortcomings – the idea is that I will take old material and re-edit them into a coherent tour through an exciting topic. The tour will take the form of an online slide show, as powered by Discover’s cool slide technology.
Let me know your thoughts.

What is all that noise coming out of my computer?
Kate asked me and I told her that it was the electrons going around the corners when the wires were bent too sharply.
She didn't beleive that either.

Get Marian Call in your town! | Bad Astronomy
My friend, the geek-chanteuse Marian Call, is touring the United States, playing smaller venues in all the Lower 48 (and Hawaii!). I heard her sing in Boulder where she was incredible as always, and also at w00tstock, where a whole passel of folks were enthralled.

Politicians Bought and Paid for By Dirty Oil and Coal
Why is it, after the worst environmental disaster in US history, that Congress can’t pass an energy or climate bill? Why can’t the Senate even pass an oil spill response bill? Because of the money in politics, and the massive money in oil and coal and gas. Many (most?) politicians are no longer motivated by doing what’s right or good for the country, they are motivated by money. So now there is a new site where you can look up your congress persons and see who is “motivating” them.  Check out this new site, Dirty Energy Money, to see some dirty energy interests behind Congress.
For instance, my Congresswoman, the climate change denier Michele Bachmann (R-MN), has taken almost $84,000 in dirty oil and coal money.  That’s not all that much for a Senator, but it’s quite a lot for a Congresswoman from one little district in Minnesota. Even the progressive Al Franken has taken about $21,000 in oil and coal money. That does influence them, and they should not be taking any of that money. The reason is that it colors their votes, it prevents clean climate change legislation from even being voted on, and it is harming everyone in the country. Senator Amy Klobuchar has taken $45,000 in dirty energy money, and most of it from coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel of all. I have to say that shocks me a little bit. It’s possible to win elections without taking money from fossil fuels, isn’t it?
It’s not just people running for office that are tainted by their loyalties to Big Oil. This morning on a TV talk show, Carol Browner, the President’s environmental director, claimed that scientists are looking at the Gulf water and the “tests show nothing of concern”. That is an outrageous statement and has to be a deliberately misleading claim by our government of what is still in the water. People who live down there report oil being seen every day.
This is no minor political game, because that oil is very dangerous to human health. What does crude oil contain? Cancer-causing agents, for one thing. The next article here will contain more information on the health effects of this oil spill, but meanwhile here is a photo taken by a Gulf resident. This photo was taken on August 6th, and you can see many more here.
Eat the seafood at your own risk . . . . Photo taken August 6, 2010
Read Carol Browner’s misleading claims on Meet the Press here and see the entire broadcast there too. She can’t possibly believe her own words when she says that most of the oil is gone — just disappeared.Â
MS. BROWNER: I think it’s also important to note that our scientists have done an initial assessment and more than three-quarters of the oil is gone, the vast majority of the oil is gone.
That defies all common sense. Do they really expect us to believe that?
I can’t believe our government is [...]

98% of People Cannot Drive Safely Using Cell Phones According to a Study
Driving while talking on a cell phone is extremely hazardous for most people.
Only a tiny fraction of “supertaskers” can do both simultaneously without ill effect - 2.5% of people studied could successfully drive and use a cell phone at the same time.
It took most people 20% longer to hit the brakes and increased following distances 30%, meaning they failed to keep pace in the simulator with virtual traffic. Also, their memory performance dropped 11% and their ability to do the math fell 3%.

The Reaction Attempts Solvent Selector
The ONS Solubility Challenge and the Reaction Attempts project have now been integrated with code written by Andrew Lang to the point that recommendations for solvents are just a click away.
The service will then provide a summary of solubility measurements and predictions, organized by the default criteria of minimum 0.3 M solubility of reactants, maximum 0.03 M solubility of the product and maximum solvent boiling point of 100 C. Liquid reactants (or reactants with melting points within 15 C of room temperature) are excluded since these generally have a high enough solubility in most solvents. The results are color-coded. In this case 14 solvents are coded green, indicating that all criteria were met. The fifteenth solvent is coded yellow, indicating that one of the criteria was not met - in this case the boiling point of 205 C is outside of the limit of 100 C. High boiling point solvents are not optimal for quickly obtaining the product as a dry solid after filtering. This criterion can be changed in the input fields at the top of the page. It is also possible to change the number of times the product is washed there. This will only change the estimated yield, which is based on carrying out the reaction at the concentration of the least soluble reactant, up to 1 M.
Get a Spine
“Get a Spine” by Stephanie Stump, is part of a project called Unsaid Thoughts, which is based on successfully being able to communicate with others. People would be able to post ideas they wished to say on a blog, and then certain ones were actually created by hand. Once the piece was created, it was sent back to the submitter to then use it to communicate their true feelings. This spine was created with letterpressed polymer clay. The text on it reads, “For you, since you don’t have one of your own.”
Damn, that would make me cry.
Wax Anatomical Model of a Female Showing Internal Organs, Francesco Calenzuoli, Florence, 1818; Wellcome Collection at the Science Museum
This anatomical wax model shows the internal organs in a female torso and head, including the lungs, liver, stomach, kidneys and intestines. Complete with the veins and arteries, the heart is entirely removable. The figure was made by Francesco Calenzuoli (1796-1821), an Italian model maker renowned for his attention to detail. Wax models were used for teaching anatomy to medical students because they made it possible to pick out and emphasise specific features of the body, making their structure and function easier to understand. This made them especially useful at a time when few bodies were available for dissection. The model was donated by the Department of Human Anatomy at the University of Oxford.
