Kristin Davis to run for NY Governor as Libertarian
Calls Taxation "confiscation"
From Eric Dondero:
Now it's Rick Lazio and Warren Redlich on the Republican side, incumbent Gov. David Paterson vs. Andre Cuomo for the Democrats, and for the Libertarian Party Kristin Davis may be the nominee. The campaign officially announced her candidacy today, which got picked up by major NY media.
The NY Daily News out of Long Island is breaking the story...
"Manhattan Madam" Kristin Davis is tossing her lacy brassiere into the political ring - with the help of one of the GOP's most fearsome strategists.
Though he's often labeled a "trickster," former Nixon, Reagan and Bushes operative Roger Stone tells us he's dead serious about getting Davis on the ballot.
"This is not a hoax, a prank or a publicity stunt," said Stone, who has been quietly huddling with Davis for months. "I want to get her a half-million votes."
Davis is then quoted as taking hardline libertarian stances. Continuing:
While branding "taxation as confiscation," the former escort empress said the legalization of prostitution and marijuana could provide $2.5 billion in revenue to help close the budget gap.
"I'm a natural Libertarian," said Davis, who also embraces gay marriage and the views of the National Rifle Association.

Davis goes on to hint that the campaign will be well-funded with contributions from her former Escort Service clients, and even Pot Growers from California.
Meanwhile The Gothamist adds more details about the coming campaign:
What kind of reform? Well, Davis calls herself a "natural Libertarian," hates taxes, wants to legalize prostitution and marijuana (hello, revenue), and supports gay marriage while being a card-carrying member of the NRA! Stone, who says GOP candidate Rick Lazio is "a turkey," is also plotting to get Davis's Penthouse Pet friends involved, "We'll get four, make them notary publics and have them, suitably attired, collecting signatures [for Davis to get on the ballot] at Grand Central Station during rush hour."

Linus Torvalds Loves His New Google Nexus One [Linus Torvalds]
Self-described cellphone cynic and "father of Linux" Linus Torvalds decided to get a Google Nexus One the other day. And while the customer service lines may be clogged over the phone's performance, Daddy Linux is positively pleased as punch.
Unsurprisingly, the man who invented the most popular open source operating system in the world is a "happy camper" over the fact that this cellphone runs Linux. But Linux alone wasn't enough to get Linus on board with the rest of the smartphone crazy 21rst century, no sir. His previous phones, in fact—the ones he mostly used to "play Galaga" on long flights—also had various versions of Linux, but lacked that certain spark.
Pinch to zoom touch capability and GPS were what finally got Torvalds to commit, and commit he has. The Nexus One "is a winner" he wrote yesterday, adding that it no longer feels as though he's forced to drag along a cellphone for "just in case" emergencies.
So, Google, as you frantically work the phones in that customer support center and stare longingly at other company's smartphone sales, take some solace in the fact that the Father of Linux is out there, somewhere, playing games on your Linux phone. [Linus Torvalds via Laughing Squid]

Revealed: The Secret of the Sperm’s Wild Dash to the Egg | 80beats
When it comes to a sperm fertilizing an egg, it all comes down to speed and timing. If the sperm starts swimming at top speed too soon, it will die before it reaches the egg. But if it swims too slowly then it won’t get to its destination in time. Now, scientists have discovered a system in the sperm that acts like a gas pedal, causing the sperm to swim faster as it gets closer to the egg. The findings were published in the February issue of Cell.
Researchers already knew that the speed of a sperm depends on its pH, or its internal acidity levels. The less acidic and more alkline it is, the faster it swims. They also knew that a sperm doesn’t sprint at top speed for its entire trip through a woman’s reproductive tract. It travels relatively slowly for the first part of its journey, and then gets lodged in the sticky folds of the fallopian tubes, resting until another, still unknown signal raises their pH again. This initiates their final race to the egg. “It’s a tough job for a sperm — when it’s deposited it has to travel a long distance to the egg sites,” [said Dejian Ren, who was not involved in the new study]. “This process has been known for many decades, but how it actually happens remained a mystery” [The Scientist].
Now the researchers say they’ve found the mechanism that raises a sperm’s pH and kicks it into high gear. In order to increase its pH and become more alkaline, the sperm needs to jettison protons, and the US scientists have found pores on its surface which allow it to do precisely that. Dr Yuriy Kirichok, who led the research, said: “The concentration of protons inside the sperm cell is 1,000 times higher than outside. If you just open a pore, protons will go outside – we identify the molecule that lets them out” [BBC].
The scientists found that as the sperm got closer to an egg, they react to a substance called anandamide, which is present in the female reproductive tract. That is when these pores or Hv1 proton channels, open–releasing protons and making the sperm swim faster. Gaining a better understanding of what prompts sperm to spring into action could open doors toward developing effective male contraception, or, alternatively, ways to give “slow swimmers” a jolt [Time].
And since anandamide is an “endocannabinoid,” this may explain why male marijuana smokers can have fertility problems–the cannabinoids found in marijuana may mimic the effect of the natural substance. Dr Kirichok said: “Marijuana likely activates sperm prematurely, leaving them burnt out in a matter of hours” [BBC].
For more info, check out this video of the researchers from the University of California in San Francisco talking about the proton activation.

If I can get up on time, I will be watching the launch itself on NASA-TV
The big priority for this mission: deliver the connecting module known as Tranquility. Tranquility has a cupola. The cupola is a robotic control station that offers 360 degree views of the ISS and of course, Earth and other objects. Once Tranquility is attached and operating building the station is 90 percent complete and naturally we are going to halt manned flights, yeah that dog and pony show makes a lot of sense.

Suicide Tourism
What can you do if you want help committing suicide, but you live in a state (all but Oregon) or country where assisted suicide is illegal? Travel to Switzerland:
From the start, Mr. Minelli [founder of Dignitas] has kicked up controversy for his willingness to help foreigners die. Most groups in Switzerland don't assist foreigners. Dignitas only helps foreigners. The number of foreigners Dignitas helps each year—132 in 2007, compared to 91 in 2003—has increasingly left the Swiss uncomfortable with the country's growing reputation for "suicide tourism." As of the end of last year, Dignitas had helped a total of 1,046 people to commit suicide.
I do not see a convincing reason for bans on assisted suicide. Informed consent rules are reasonable, but that seems sufficient to me.
Major Florida County now has Libertarian Republicans as Chair of local GOP, and Pres. of GOP Club
Naples is a city of about 80,000 on the southwest Florida Coast. It is most certainly an upscale community, mainly of wealthy retirees from New York, and other northeastern states. There's a golf course on every corner, literally.
In the early 1990s, during the first years of the Republican Liberty Caucus, Naples was a hub of sorts for Libertarian Republicans. 1976 Libertarian Party Presidential candidate and RLC National Chairman Roger MacBride lived there in a posh condo overlooking the water. He would host many early RLC meetings and weekend get-togethers.
I was living in Tallahassee at the time, and running the national RLC from there. Though, in its first couple years, the RLC was a very Florida-focused organization. No accident that today, the Florida RLC is without doubt the most organized and active of all RLC affiliates nationwide.
A Refugee from the Ross Perot Movement
A local real estate agent in Naples named Scott LePore got active with us in the RLC. He came from the Ross Perot and Term Limits movements; not quite a libertarian, but a reformer "fiscally conservative/socially moderate" sort. Scott soon became very active with us movement libertarians, and even served on the Florida RLC board. He also became friends with Roger MacBride.
I eventually lost touch with Scott, but it appears he stayed active all these years, and stuck with the GOP. So much so, in fact, that he's now got a promotion.
For Youth, Social Networking the key to growing the GOP
From NaplesNew.com, "Collier’s new GOP leadership sees exciting future for Republican Party" Feb. 6:
Schwerin and Collier County Republican Club President Scott Lepore, 43, hope to breathe new life into the local party, an effort under way in every town around the nation.
[Frank] Schwerin, a cardiologist, and Lepore, a Realtor, may have different styles but believe they will work well together.
“It’s going to be a hand-in-hand partnership,” Lepore said. “It’s two different formats for two different purposes (but) when I met Frank, I felt here (we) are two people who think the same. Now, I’m a member of the Collier County Republican Executive Committee, and, as far as I’m concerned, everybody’s on the same page.”
Lepore took over as club president in January 2009. Since then, membership has increased and the club has banked twice its previous take.
Lepore brings verbal energy and new ideas for socializing to the mix.
He moved club meetings to the Bellasera Hotel in downtown Naples, reduced admission from $20 to $10, and kept the socials going through the summer. He brought in exciting young speakers, such as U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio.
It's a little ironic that my old friend Scott is now helping to run the Collier County Republican Committee. Back in the old days, he was a bit of an outcast, barely let inside the door of the local GOP. He was seen as brash, and a bit too over-energetic for the staid establishment oldtimers.
Republicans now a "Scott Brown/Marco Rubio Party"
“These are very exciting times,” Lepore said, noting that 161 people came out to hear Rubio speak.
Rejuvenation of the party is the key, Lepore said. One of the reasons the Republicans took such a beating in the 2008 presidential election was because the party didn’t inspire the youth of the nation, Lepore said.
That is changing with the recent election of Scott Brown, a young Massachusetts Republican who won the U.S. Senate seat traditionally held by a Democrat; and the energy of Rubio, who is capturing national attention, Lepore said.
Pro-Military Libertarian now Chairs Collier County GOP
But it gets even better. Seems that the newly appointed Chairman of the Collier County Republican Executive Committee is also a Libertarian Republican. Continuing:
Both Lepore and Schwerin stress the necessity for involvement of youth, coupled with traditional conservative Republican values.
“I have a passion about America and freedom,” Schwerin said. “I’m pretty Libertarian except that I’m pro-life and believe in a strong military.”
“My skill set is that I don’t pull punches,” Schwerin said.
Schwering goes on to account that he's been active with the GOP ever since the days of Nixon. And was even taken to the White House as a young child to meet President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He also ran against current GOP Congressman Connie Mack in 2004.
