End of March 2009 So as you do I followed a tip given to me by some fellow travellers I had met in Madhya Pradesh Om Kareshwar about a tiny village in Kulu District Himachal Pradesh among the foothills of the Himalayas on the Indian side. I only had a week left before I had to make my way back to Mumbai for my trip home but the tip proved to be a gem. Jibhi is a village in the Bangar Val

Geert Wilders: Europe’s Ronald Reagan

Noted Scholar on Islam and Western Civilization, Daniel Pipes recently wrote a column for the Jerusalem Post, in which he praised Dutch Member of Parliament and current Presidential candidate Geert Wilders. Pipes compared the "libertarian-conservative" to American President Ronald Reagan.

From DanielPipes.com, Jan. 19:

The PVV [Party for Freedom] is libertarian and mainstream conservative, without roots in neo-Fascism, nativism, conspiricism, antisemitism, or other forms of extremism. (Wilders publicly emulates Ronald Reagan.) Indicative of this moderation is Wilders' long-standing affection for Israel that includes two years' residence in the Jewish state, dozens of visits, and his advocating the transfer of the Dutch embassy to Jerusalem.

In addition, Wilders is a charismatic, savvy, principled, and outspoken leader who has rapidly become the most dynamic political force in the Netherlands.

Wilders is currently on trial in the Netherlands for insulting Islam through production of his 2008 film "Fitna."

Reminder: Endeavour to launch Sunday! | Bad Astronomy

endeavour_feb2010[Update; The launch was scrubbed due to low clouds. The next launch attempt will be at 04:14 Eastern (09:14 GMT) Monday morning... but they're predicting 60% chance of low clouds again!]

Don’t forget: the Space Shuttle Endeavor is scheduled to launch tomorrow, Sunday February 7, at 04:39 Eastern time (09:39 GMT). It’s the last planned night launch of a shuttle. I will not be live-tweeting it, since that’s 02:30 my time and I’m not staying up for it (I have to travel Monday and don’t need to screw up my system that much). But a lot of folks are there and will be tweeting it as it happens, like Universe Today’s Nancy Atkinson. Follow her for more info as it happens.

China’s Lunar Ambitions

China space program shoots for moon, Washington Times

"Senior Chinese space officials have told their state media that China could be on the moon by 2022 at the outside. Other authoritative Chinese space engineers see a moon landing as a next step in the Tiangong program that will launch three Chinese space stations into Earth orbit between 2011 and 2015. In 2008, NASA scientists told the Bush White House that, with the technology currently available to the Chinese space program, Chinese cosmonauts could be on the moon by 2017."

The Boy Who Looked at the Moon, Homer Hickam

"The man stood watching the glowing television sets stacked in the storefront window. The window was dirty, the glass cracked and repaired with a strip of tape. A boy stood beside him. "What are you looking at, Dad?" "I'm watching the Chinese celebrate the completion of their moonlab, son. Look, there they are on the moon. See how happy they are?" "They always seem to be so happy. How come nobody around here is ever that happy, Dad?" The man looked at his son in surprise. "Well, I don't know. I guess I haven't thought much about that."

Weekend Videos

This video is short and sweet.  Do you want to install solar panels but can’t afford it or wonder who should install it?  A solar cooperative might be able to help.  And there is probably one in your area.  It’s a new project called 1BOG, or One Block Off the Grid.   CleanTechnica writes:

There’s never been a better time to go solar, and in a growing number of cities across the US, it’s an economic no-brainer. You can see if solar is right for you by signing up here or on the form to your right. . . . . 1BOG gathers homeowners interested in solar and gets large discounts from top installers.

One Block Off the Grid is grassroots organizing meets consumer power, and together we’re helping drive the adoption of residential solar energy. You can learn more about 1BOG here: Everything you ever wanted to know about solar group purchasing.

This sounds like a great idea and a good way to get started with solar. I’m going to check them out personally for what’s available in my area.

You can also check out local hardware stores. I noticed my local super-hardware supplier has a solar panel package on sale this week and it’s really affordable. I wonder, though, what to do with with snow-covered solar panels. . . .

And for inspiration — my favorite Jackson song, Earth Song,  paid tribute to at the Grammys last week.

The week Jackson died I did a podcast and put a segment of this song at the end of it — not ever having heard it before, and finding it totally by accident.  Jackson was at least an environmentalist sympathizer, and wrote the song because of his love for the planet, or so goes the story.

“…a performance of the star’s “Earth Song” by Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, and Smokey Robinson followed a recorded interview with Michael himself, where he talked about his passion for saving the planet. “That’s why I write these kind of songs, to give some kind of awareness and awakening and hope to people. I love the planet.  I love trees. . . . . . “

Motorola MOTOSPLIT Splits This Way, Splits That Way [Motosplit]

Motorola claims they're coming out with a couple dozen Android phones in 2010, and with a crop so big a few of them are bound to be pretty weird. This render suggests that the MOTOSPLIT might be one of those.

Like the Samsung Alias 2 before it, the MOTOSPLIT shown here sports a keyboard that has tiny touch screens for keys, though this one has the unique ability to slide out in landscape or portrait orientation. Depending on the way its being held, or maybe the application its running, the mini screens update on the fly. Neat!

Not so neat is the part of the report that claims its specs will be more or less the same as the Backflip's, which means its essentially relegated to Motorola's junior varsity smartphone squad.

Still, Android Community's rumors are just that, and it's possible that come the season—Motorola expects the phone to be ready for Q3—MOTOSPLIT will have the power to match its versatility. [Android Community via SlashGear]

Pray That Your Kratos Case Mod PC Doesn’t Get a Virus [Casemods]

If you've been looking for a case mod that will strike fear into all the other computers you come across, well, look no further. But be careful, this guy gets cranky when he needs to defrag.

A lot of us subject our computers to quite a bit of abuse. We overcrowd their hard drives and overclock their processors. We bang on their keyboards. We smudge their screens. If you want a case mod that will keep you in line, this one, taking the form of Kratos, the main character from the God of War game series, will do just that.

With Kratos's unflinching stare burning a hole in the side of your head, you're sure to always stay on task and treat your machine with respect. Or he'll have your typing fingers. [Engadget]

No One Needs To Know About Your Paper iPad [Ipad]

Someone might judge you for putting together a mock iPad, but it's certainly not going to be us. Be it for practicing the Tablet Sutra or faking out a fanboy friend, here's the template you've been looking for.

Courtesy of Jess Silverstone at Revolutionary Concepts, this template can be printed on standard paper and will fold into an iPad that's just about the same size as the real thing, as long as your printer is capable of borderless printing.

Here's the front and the back, and here's what your arts and crafts project will look like when it's all put together:

So have at it. I'm not gonna ask any questions. [MacRumors]
