Report that Obama decided on space policy may be premature , Orlando Sentinel
"A report by a respected science publication that said President Barack Obama has decided on a new space policy for NASA may be premature, according to Write Stuff sources. The report, which was posted Thursday night on the "Science Insider" blog at the web site of the journal Science, quoted unnamed sources saying that in a meeting on Wednesday with NASA chief Charlie Bolden, the president decided to add an extra $1 billion to NASA's budget."
Keith's note: It would seem that Science Magazine jumped the gun a bit. As is the case with the Orlando Sentinel, NASA Watch sources report that the story published in Science is incomplete and, in some cases, is just plain wrong. Specifically it asserts that a final decision has been made as to what NASA will be told to do. That is not the case. But it is likely that NASA will be getting a budget bump of upwards of $1 billion.
After last week's Obama/Bolden meeting, NASA is on the hook from White House to provide additional information between now and January to be factored into the final decision making process. Among other things, these decisions include the fate of Ares 1 and the new path that may be chosen regarding launch vehicle utilization and development. Moreover, sources report that the impetus for this "leak" was someone in or around the White House - someone who is not necessarily all that thrilled with certain options that are on the table. So, in classic Washington style, they leaked someone else's potentially good news - but did so early - and the results were counterproductive.
You can be certain that neither the White House or the 9th Floor at NASA HQ are remotely thrilled that this stuff is leaking out this soon given that some final number and policy crunching needs to be done. Having to bat down stories - accurate and inaccurate - serves only to distract them from that process. Given that there is lingering concern in some quarters about NASA's capabilities, seeing this stuff dribble out - regardless of the source(s) works against the agency as it strives to make its case to President Obama.
That said, having a high profile meeting at the White House just before Christmas and then expecting everyone to stay silent until the FY 2011 budget comes out in February is unrealistic - and somewhat naive in this day and age since no one can keep their mouth shut any more.
As always, stay tuned.
On Friday I posted about a video created by the NYC American Museum of Natural History taking you on a tour of the Universe.
I just received a note from Ben Oppenheimer, the Associate Curator and Professor at the Department of Astrophysics of the American Museum of Natural History (phew!), thanking me for linking to the video, but also noting that there is a lot more information available online about it, including background about the production, and his own blog.
But perhaps the coolest thing is that you can download their atlas — which has stars, galaxies, nebulae, everything — and use it to create your own fly-through of the Universe!
The software is not all that simple, but it can be used to create all sorts of tours of space. If you download it and make some, then post links to what you’ve done in the comments!
Hey Seth Meyers made a joke! About the iPhone! And it was funny!
The bit came during SNL last night, and like all good jokes, was funny because it's true.
As an iPhone user, I definitely chuckled a bit, before I returned to weeping silently in a corner as my phone tried to make an outgoing call from the greater Boston area without success. Must be the storm. Must be. [YouTube via Engadget]

A last minute deal was cut on the Senate floor to switch the originally proposed tax on cosmetic procedures for an equal percentage tax on tanning salons. Lobbyists for the cosmetic industry had pushed hard for the removal of the tax. Tanning salon small business owners were caught off guard.
Breaking News from the LA Times:
Senate plan would tax tanning services
Democrats replace the 'botax' on cosmetic procedures with a 10% sales tax on the use of tanning beds, citing skin cancer concerns. The tax would raise an estimated $2.7 billion over 10 years.
Citing concerns over skin cancer, Senate Democrats inserted a last-minute provision into their healthcare overhaul that would tax the use of tanning beds.
The 10% sales tax would be imposed on individuals who purchase tanning services...
The tanning tax would help pay for the massive overhaul by raising an estimated $2.7 billion over 10 years. It replaces a proposed excise tax on elective cosmetic surgery that was previously included in the bill. The "botax" would have raised more than twice the amount as the tanning tax. But cosmetic surgeons, who argued that it would discriminate against middle-class women, launched a successful lobbying campaign against it.
Jennifer Fermino at the NY Post opines this morning:
If Botox users could move their faces, they'd be smiling wide over the proposed Senate health-care plan, but tanning-bed fanatics are sure to be seeing red.
The bill's provisions that will likely sail through the Senate will slap a 10 percent tax on all trips to the tanning bed.
The fake-bake tax replaces an earlier tariff on cosmetic procedures like Botox, tummy tucks and hair transplants, which were scrapped in the latest negotiations.
A number of prominent Democrat Senators and even a Vice-President have been known to have Botox procedures and hair-transplants.
Blogger Far Right Democrat quipped:
The tanning association trade organization (if there is one) needs to hire better lobbyists and start giving campaign donations to Obama.

The number of gun permits issued in Massachusetts surged by more than 15 percent over the past two years, reversing nearly a decade of steady declines and marking a pronounced departure for a state known for its antigun sentiment.
The magnitude of the rise, evident in nearly every corner of the state, surprised law enforcement officials, and gun advocates and opponents alike.
What's the explanation for this surge? Perhaps fear that Democrats would enact new gun control laws, perhaps just increased economic anxiety. You tell me.
There's been a wave of Democrat Party switchers to the GOP since September. They include new Republicans in Vermont, North Carolina, Alabama, over 20 in Texas, and a growing number in Mississippi.
The latest? Neshoba County Chancery Clerk Larry McMillan. RNC Chairman Michael Steele and MS Gov. Haley Barbour even showed up for the switching ceremony.
From the Madison County Journal on-line, Dec. 18:
On hand at the event were Gov. Haley Barbour, Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and dozens of other statewide elected GOP leaders.
The occasion was used to recognize Neshoba County Chancery Clerk Larry McMillan, who announced his intentions to switch to the Republican Party, having been a lifelong Democrat.
Steele joked with McMillan, noting all the big-name state Republicans who came out for the event.
"You really bring them out Larry," Steele said. "It's a great honor that I get to welcome you to the Republican party."
McMillan attributed his switch to being fed up with the Democrat Party's push for health care reform.
McMillan is the 9th county or municipal elected official in Mississippi to switch to the Republican Party this year.
Neshoba County (pop. 28,000) is located in Central Mississippi. The County seat is Philadelphia. It is home to one of the oldest and largest casinos in the State: Pearl River Resort.

Even Military Guys deserve some Personal Privacy

Looks like the State of Vermont may have to reverse its gender neutral bathroom policies in its dorm rooms.
From Fox News:
Nineteen-year-old Jennifer Weiler filed a civil complaint last week against the Department of Public Safety, which enforces building and plumbing codes she claims were violated.
All seven of the school's residence halls are co-ed. According to the lawsuit, Weiler and others are uncomfortable with the flimsy curtains on the shower doors and men using the toilets without closing the door.
Weiler's father, Ron Weiler, told The Burlington Free Press that school officials agreed to label the bathroom on her floor "female" but males continue to use it. A college spokesman declined to comment.
The same could be applied to homosexuals in the military.
Straight men or straight women for that matter, would be forced to share close quarter bunking facilities, with members of the same sex who are attracted to them sexually.
This is inherently discriminatory. Members of the same sex will be allowed to peer and gawk at people they're attracted too in shower stalls, in bathroom facilities, and even sharing bunks.
In the Navy, in which I served, the rules and regulations governing males entering a females quarters were severe. A straight male caught gawking or pleasuring himself in or around female sailors could be sentenced to captain's mast or even court martialed.
Gays in the military? Those same rules governing sailors attracted to other male sailors would be non-existent.
In such a situation, shouldn't the young sailor, male or female, have the right to sue, so as to protect his or her privacy? Shouldn't they have the right not to be gawked at for the sexual pleasure of another? Imagine the first discinplinary action against a young straight male sailor caught peering into female quarters, after gays in the military is implemented. His defense? Simply that gay sailor "Bobby," or "Jeremy" has the right to gawk at him.
What could be more basic in life than some expectation or personal privacy in regards to bathing, hygeine and taking care of bodily functions? Even military personnel deserve some sort of expectation of privacy in this regard. If it's good enough for some college girl at a state-subsidized institution in Vermont, it's certainly good enough for our brave soldiers and sailors in uniform.

Leshin previously served as the deputy center director for science and technology at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She has led the formulation of strategy and the start of new missions since 2008 as Goddard's senior scientist, while providing extensive scientific guidance to lunar architecture and other human spaceflight planning activities.
"I am delighted that Laurie will be joining us as my deputy, and I look forward to working closely with her," said Doug Cooke, associate administrator for NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate. "She has worked with Exploration in the past and has a great track record. I think her experience and skills will be invaluable as we move forward."
Leshin joined NASA in August 2005 as the director of Goddard's Sciences and Exploration Directorate. She came to the agency from Arizona State University, where she was The Dee and John Whiteman Dean Distinguished Professor of Geological Sciences and director of the Center for Meteorite Studies.
Through her research, Leshin sought to decipher the record of water in objects in our solar system. A primary part of the research involved using meteorites from Mars to assess the history of water and the potential for life on the Red Planet. She has been on science teams for several NASA missions, including the Mars Polar Lander and the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory.
Earlier this year, Leshin also led the NASA Innovation and Technology Study Group, a team of 15 that made recommendations on how NASA could increase focus on innovative activities and technologies needed to advance the agency's mission. She earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry at Arizona State University in 1987 and a doctorate in geochemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1994.
Prior to coming to NASA, Leshin received the agency's Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award for non-NASA personnel. The International Astronomical Union has recognized her contributions to planetary science with the naming of asteroid 4922 Leshin.
