Libertarian Party to hold state convention in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM – The city will host the 2013 convention of the Libertarian Party of Washington State, and attendance is free during the speeches of nationally prominent party figures. Speakers include national vice presidential candidate Jim Gray, national party Executive Director Carla Howell, former state Supreme Court Judge Richard Sanders and Sumas Mayor Bob Bromley. Rob Stratton, a member of the county Libertarian Party and the gun rights group Open Carry, will speak on the Second Amendment, according to Jason Del Wraa, county party chairman. Continue reading

Lawsuit Tests Bloggers’ Freedom of Speech Rights

A colleague of the late conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart is asking a federal court of appeals to throw out a defamation case brought against him by former government employee Shirley Sherrod, saying the lawsuit violates the blogger’s right to freedom of speech. Sherrod was ousted from her job as an Agriculture Department rural development official in 2010 after Breitbart posted an edited video of Sherrod, who is black, supposedly making racist remarks. She sued Breitbart, his employee Larry O’Connor and an unnamed defendant for defamation and emotional distress after USDA officials asked her to resign and the video ignited a racial firestorm. Diver dies off Sydney's northern beaches

A CLOSE-KNIT scuba diving community is in mourning after the death of one of its members during a “technical dive” off Sydney’s northern beaches. The 41-year-old man was pulled unconscious from the water at 8.30am (AEDT) on Saturday after getting into difficulty at a depth of about 60 metres at a wreck off Barrenjoey Headland.
