A question no one wants to be asked – Franklin News Post

Friday evening, in an off-and-on drizzle, I was heading for the emergency room at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Only this trip was going to be earth-shaking for me.

Debra Huff, late wife Hazels No. 1 daughter, was again the driver. We had made a quick food stop at Bojangles on Route 40 East. We also were meeting her husband, Red, to give him my full oxygen tanks.

The words of my long-time friend Dr. Steve Lewis were still fresh on my mind. What was to come during the next three days startled me though I had discussed the scenario before.

The question I was to be asked several times during my stay in the intensive care unit was What are your wishes should your heart stop beating?

Have you ever been asked that question?

I had never heard it even in 2005, when I flat-lined three times, twice at Carilion Franklin Memorial only to be brought back twice by friend Dr. Charles Lane and once in the Roanoke Memorial ER.

My recent trip was different from anything I expected.

The week before, at about 9 a.m. on a Friday, I was the first of many at Roanoke Memorial on the fourth floor to undergo an upper gastro-intestinal operation or procedure.

It was to find and stop a bleeding stomach ulcer and several smaller ones that had been the cause of blood loss since at least mid-April. I had never before had a doctor even mention the fact that I could have had an ulcer.

It took them just over an hour to complete the procedure and I was back in my room feeling as if nothing had happened except I felt a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I shed tears of joy.

This experience was interesting in the fact I received a unit of blood the evening before the operation that had been pre-warmed to the point it felt warm to my hands before entered the IV in my arm.

And the best part of it all was this fairly new procedure allowed me to receive the blood in less than half the time, or two rather than four hours. A very sharp intern doctor had two very good nurses do a tough procedure.

Amy Dillon of Franklin County is the niece of Posey Dillon, the Rocky Mount fire chief, and veteran firefighter Danny Altice, both of whom were killed in a July 26, 2010, firetruck crash.

She was assisted by Brooke Spencer of Patrick County. They installed a port in my neck and connected with my heart. That allowed medicine or whatever to be given in addition to the two IVs placed in my arms.

The area was numbed and I listened with intense interest as the young doctor with the French name talked them through the procedure. It was done in ER Room No. 15. I hate to say it, but the port was removed Saturday morning.

What a waste, I recalled thinking.

As the nurse pulled the line from my neck after I took a deep breath to help with the pain. Yeah, right.

Since everything went so well and all of the ulcer bleeding had been stopped and the X-ray of my chest turned out well, Red and Debra picked me up and took me home Monday afternoon.

Peggy Brown, late wife Hazels No. 4 daughter, had come over Sunday night with some great chocolate dessert she had made. Somehow she slept in a chair and spent the night in my room just in case I needed special assistance. Number 2 and 3 daughters, Polly and Teresa, also came to my aid.

So now Im back writing the column without missing a lick and Im going to keep going more as I get back my strength.

I have a couple of hot stories I look forward to writing. One is about 91-year-old Marie Perdue.

Book It: The cover of Phillip Garretts new book The Chronicles of a Sophisticated Redneck features an outline of Virginia.

Garrett, whose mother was director of nurses at Franklin Memorial at one time, and father, who worked for a government agency, wrote about his growing up days, and he made them interesting.

There is a photo in the book of Phillip when he played football for the Franklin County High School Eagles that either the late Phillip Nichols or I took during photo day his senior year.

A book signing is set from 8 a.m. until noon Sept. 16, at the Farmers Market on Franklin Street.

Great Grand Opening: Chris Prillaman of Ferrum, owner of Twin Creeks Distillery, had a super grand opening Saturday at his new location on Henry Road, a heartbeat away from Prillaman Switch Road.

I hate that I missed it and dont have any photos to use because I was Roanoke Memorial. That is the only thing that kept me away and I was looking forward to the bid day. Special guests were Henry Law and his famous father, Amos.

Henry has opened his distillery near the county line at Penhook. He is producing his fathers special recipe under the brand name of Laws Choice. I will be doing a special story on his operation in the near future,

Saving a Hummer: My daughter Kathy found a sick little humming bird on her apartment deck and a larger female pecking the other bird on the head. Kathy was upset.

She took the hummer inside her apartment, put it in a special box, left food next to it and had to go to work. She continued to nurse the bird as it slowly improved.

A wildlife vet she knew who comes to her store, Fresh Market, stopped in one day and Kathy, an assistant manager there, asked her about the bird. Well, the vet took the little hummer home with her and the story hopefully has a happy ending.

Kathy said she talked to the vet, who had locked herself out of her car. She was ready to release the bird and did so perhaps yesterday.

And finally: I was coming to work yesterday and saw three walkers heading toward North Main and I think at least two of them were struggling with trying to carry a bowling ball.

Now Ive forgotten how much one of those balls weigh, but I know they are not light and carrying something heavy around with only three small holes had to be adding a lot to their exercise program. Good luck!

And, again, thanks for all your thoughts, prayers, phone calls and cards. They are appreciated as is your continued readership.

Grey’s Season 14: A ‘Jolex’ Wedding, Justice for DeLuca and More Wishes – TVLine

Given the pall that was cast over Season 13 of Greys Anatomy by everything from Callies absence to Alex and Jos estrangement not to mention Minnicks reign of terror it was music to fans ears when Giacomo Gianniotti (DeLuca) told TVLine that the ABC dramas upcoming Season 14 was going to be funnier sexier lighter than its predecessor.

But heres the thing: We Greys viewers are a greedy lot. And, though funnier sexier lighter is a fine start, we want more. (Besides, this isnt the first time weve been promised a much lighter tone and the last time we heard that, the show flung Callie and Arizona into a bitter custody battle, had a patient attack Mer and killed off Wilmer Valderrama!)

So, while awaiting the series two-hour comeback (Thursday, Sept. 28, at 8/7c), weve compiled a list of our fondest wishes for the upcoming season, ranging from the starts of new romances to the return of a former favorite. Anatomy of a Stokes masterclass – ESPNcricinfo.com

Rising Pune Supergiant v Gujarat Lions, IPL 2017, Pune May 1, 2017

Rising Pune Supergiant were 10 for 3 in their chase of 162, and then 42 for 4, but nothing, not even a prolonged bout of cramps, was going to stop Ben Stokes

Star turn

Ever since the last World T20 final, when he was hit for four sixes in the final over of the chase, Ben Stokes has been the subject of some ridicule, especially when sold for a record sum in the IPL auction. Two days before he goes back to his house of horrors, Eden Gardens, Ben Stokes produced one of the great Twenty20 innings. And he did so while hobbling with a cramp in his calf in the last three overs of the chase. Nothing can wipe off what happened in Kolkata last year, but Stokes has done enough in this IPL season to quell those doubts around him.

Coming into this match, Stokes had won two match awards but both for bowling. He had scored only 127 from seven innings before this, but in Pune, coming in to bat in the second over, at the fall of the third wicket. he scored 63% of his team's total. He had batted sooner in an innings only four times before that.

In his 126 a night before, a near-perfect T20 innings, David Warner batted with a 78% control percentage, which is phenomenal when you are attempting to hit a boundary every second ball. Stokes displayed 79% control. That control percentage was bound to be higher because he hit only one boundary every five balls as against Warner's one every three balls, but the fact Stokes couldn't afford to keep swinging made this innings special.

Stokes also struggled against legspinner Ankit Soni. He picked the wrong 'uns out of the back of the hand, but the sliders out of the front of the hand kept going past his outside edge. The 11 balls Soni bowled to Stokes, for seven runs, brought his control percentage down. So Stokes had to strike against others but in a calculated manner because four wickets fell within the first six overs, and because MS Dhoni faced 10 dots in his first 12 balls.

So Stokes struck against Ravindra Jadeja to break the shackles, and then kept finding the boundary every time the asking rate threatened to go out of hand.

The wow moment

Things can happen before you realise in T20 cricket. You are four down early, you are looking to arrest the slide, and two spinners can run through six overs in no time. When you look up at the board, you can be staring at an unachievable asking rate. The previous 19 balls had got Rising Pune just nine runs, with the asking rate shooting from 8.5 to 10. Then Stokes swung. Bang and bang, Ravindra Jadeja was hit over midwicket and long-on. The innings was back on track, and this was the last over Jadeja bowled because Gujarat Lions couldn't get rid of Stokes at all.

What they said

"Stokesy is a quality player and he certainly earned his cash." Enough said, captain Steven Smith

"We lost quite a few early wickets... Me and MS [Dhoni] just tried to keep it ticking. We just tried to go big at the start of the over, and cool it off." Ben Stokes on how he approached the chase

Anatomical Gifts Program will honor donors at service – The Dartmouth

by Debora Hyemin Han | 5/12/17 2:05am

The Geisel School of Medicine'sAnatomical Gifts Program will hold a memorial service on May 25.

Source: Courtesy of James Reed

While technology and computer simulations have become more efficacious in modeling the human body, many medical schools continue the tradition of using human cadavers for anatomical instruction. Dartmouths Geisel School of Medicine is just one of the schools that continue to place value on cadaver-based teaching, and each spring, Geisels Anatomical Gifts Program conducts a memorial service honoring the anatomical donors whose bodies are used in the first-year anatomy class.

According to director of the anatomy laboratory James Reed, Geisel first-years take three terms of anatomy before they finish the first year, working in small groups on one cadaver throughout that time. Reed said that using human bodies to teach anatomy is the best way to teach the subject, as it allows students to examine normal human variation something that simulations have yet to truly emulate. He said that it is important for students to know not only the standard structures of the human body, but also whether a deviation from that standard structure is actually normal human variation or pathology, which is best learned by interacting with actual bodies.

The Anatomical Gifts Program, overseen by Geisels Department of Anatomy, receives applications from donors who reside in and pass away in New Hampshire and Vermont to be included in the anatomical lab, according to Reed. There are 1,600 bodies in Geisels program currently, and the average age of the donors at death is in the mid 80s, though the donors may be as young as 21 as long as they die of natural causes. The program requires that donors bodies be intact namely, that they do not die of traumatic accident or have an autopsy post-death and do not have infectious or rare diseases. In addition, because Reed and Anatomical Gifts Program administrative director Hanna Riendeau embalm the bodies, the donors must not have had vascular issues and circular diseases or have undergone recent surgeries. Reed said that in order to protect the dignity of the donors, anatomical tissue is not transported outside the facility once they arrive.

Reed said that most donors participate in the program for altruistic reasons, such as giving back to Dartmouth. The program has accepted Dartmouth alumni, former professors and former doctors from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital and Veterans Affairs in the past. This year, Reed said there was a high number of local people who signed up to be in the program, exemplifying how strong the Dartmouth-Upper Valley connection is. He noted that this strong connection is one reason why Geisel has not had to outsource for cadavers very often.

Briana Goddard Med20, who interviewed donors families in preparation for the memorial service, said that many said the donors had a love of education and wanted to help contribute to medical education.

Diana Funk Med20 said that knowing that the people who are in the program truly wanted to be there was what allowed her to overcome the initial shock of working on a human body.

That was really [a] meaningful sentiment that I think helped a lot of people through their initial fear and grief: knowing that every single one of them wanted to be there to teach us, she said.

John Damianos 16 Med20 agreed that he had to strike a balance between respecting the humanity of the donors who may still have living family members and being cognizant that the donors made the conscious decision to be teachers even after death. Damianos said that knowing the donors desired to be used for the purpose of teaching allowed him to avoid being too gingerly in dissecting the bodies.

He added that the medical school made a concerted effort to put the cadaver-based instruction into perspective, especially as it fits into the larger medical journey, through sessions on the psychology of illness and a panel on the anatomical donations. The panel included a retired Geisel faculty member whose body will be donated to the Anatomical Gifts Program once he passes.

During the panel, Damianos said it was impressed upon him and his peers that the donor is their first patient, that the body is not just cells, tissues and organs to dissect, but a person with scars and tattoos, and whose brains were formed by the memories and experiences they had in their lifetime. According to Riendeau, students are given the names of the donors as well as a brief background, which gives students context for their subjects.

Damianos said incorporating the different bio-psycho-social factors of the patient into the class emphasized that medicine is a humanistic science. Furthermore, he said that the class has changed his view on medicine in the pedagogical realm.

Pre-med education trains you to think that medicine is a science, but its really not theres science in medicine and theres biomedical sciences, but medicine in itself is an art and a practice. When you look at pre-med education curriculum, you dont see that, he said. [In organic chemistry there is] always an answer, [and in] cell [biology] theres always an answer. But the one remarkable thing about anatomy is that each body is different.

Funk added that working on human bodies has demonstrated that much of the study of medicine relies on what is handed down from person to person, whether that be information or tangible bodies. She said that knowing that this is the type of scheme that she and her peers are a part of made her feel connected to the people who came before and after her. She also said she realized the importance of actually touching and feeling body parts in studying medicine.

Damianos echoed a similar statement, saying that holding a brain in his hands was the most impactful part of the process.

To actually hold a human brain in my hands this is the brain that is formed by this persons experiences and emotions, this brain enabled them to speak, enabled them to love, enabled them to cry that just blew my mind, he said.

To commemorate the impact the donors have had on the students studies and medical journeys, and to meet the families of the donors, first-year students plan and conduct a memorial service each year. Funk and Goddard are preparing reflections from families of donors and students, and Damianos will perform with the a cappella group the Dermatones, along with other student performers at the service.

Reed said that the group extends invitations to everyone who has been in the lab throughout the year in order to express the gratitude of the entire community to the donors families.

He also said that this service provides closure for the families that have been delayed for up to two years, given that they do not bury their loved one as most people do.

Its not the typical end of life procedure; youre not triggering what would be considered the societal norm of having a large funeral with a casket, Reed said.

Through the reflections, Funk said she and her peers hope to juxtapose the students reflections on what the learning experience meant to them with who the donors were in their lifetimes and how excited they were to be a part of the program. She said that knowing that every person in the program had specifically intended their bodies not just to go to science, but also to the Geisel anatomy program in particular was meaningful.

Hopefully [this] will bring together the families and the students in a way that they can be mutually grateful for each other, Funk said.

The Anatomical Gifts Program will hold its service at Rollins Chapel on May 25 at 5 p.m. The event is open to the entire Dartmouth community.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 13 Finale Synopsis Revealed – Wetpaint – Wetpaint

Credit: Richard Cartwright/ABC 2017 Disney | ABC Television Group. All rights reserved.

With only three installments left in Greys Anatomy Season 13, were already getting jittery thinking of all the drama the season finale will unleash.

And a new synopsis from ABC only ups the anxiety!

Per Screener, heres ABCs first synopsis for the May 18 season-capper:

A dangerous patient escapes the hospital room, putting the doctors lives at risk; Alex faces a difficult decision in his relationship with Jo; Meredith has big news for Nathan.

Lets break down that tease clause by clause. First up: A dangerous patient escapes the hospital room, putting the doctors lives at risk.

If a fire does indeed break out at Grey Sloan Memorial, we imagine its this patient who starts it. Perhaps dangerous is code for pyromaniac here.

(The synopsis for the preceding episode also mentions a dangerous patient, whom we imagine is the same person.)

Next, Alex faces a difficult decision in his relationship with Jo.

One week earlier, hell attend a medical conference after making a shocking discovery, that episodes synopsis reveals.

Were guessing that shocking discovery will be the identity of Jos abusive husband, maybe the character Glee star Matthew Morrison is playing, as fans are conjecturing. (Matthews character is another guest at that conference, after all.)

So perhaps Alex will be dealing with the fallout of his encounter with Jos ex when the finale rolls around.

Then again, Shonda Rhimes always subverts our expectations, and wed bet good money she wants us to think big news will mean big baby bump just so well be caught off-guard by a season finale curveball.

But how does she expect us to sleep between now and May 18?!

Greys Anatomy Season 13 airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m ET on ABC.

Anatomy of a Play: The Day Bryce Petty Almost Died – The Phinsider

On the 1st play of the 4th quarter in the Week 15 match-up between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, Bryce Petty fell victim to a snap count miscommunication and it nearly cost him his life. After Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suhs impact, I fully expected to see Pettys intestines randomly scattered across the NFL logo on the field.

Winning 34-10, MetLife Stadium had already been taken over by a sea of aqua and orange. This play made me cringe and I was sitting in the nosebleeds. A collective ooh, with accompanying facial twitch, overcame the crowd to empathize with the pain - it must have felt like getting hit by Mike Tyson in Mike Tysons Punch-Out and a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick at the same time.

Ryan Fitzpatrick came out and put up a whopping 17.1 QB rating for the rest of the game and the rest was history. Dolphins win.

But wow, this play was almost as bad as Mark Sanchez using his face to wipe Brandon Moores butt.

Lawyer: Mr. SUTTON, what did you witness Saturday night at MetLife Stadium?

Me: I witnessed Mr. Suh and Mr. Wake kill Mr. Petty. I also saw the Jets sucking and the Dolphins not sucking.

Lawyer: And by what means did they use to (air quote) kill Mr. Petty?

Me: I thought it was a fun formation that created a little confusion: Suh and Wake at DE, Jason Jones (DE) at DT, Andre Branch (DE) at DT standing up, LBs pressing the A gaps. On this play, the Jets offense communicated about as well as Chewbacca enunciates - and it was in between quarters when the Jets conceivably had more time to not have that kind of dumb s*** happen, but, you know, its the Jets, that type of stuff happens all the time. #76, #83, and #67 literally touched nothing but air on the play. The only reason #71 touches someone is because Jason Jones runs right into him.

Lawyer: (snickers fairly loudly, coughs/clears throat, realizes he has to remain composed during the proceedings and not reveal his Dolphins loyalty) How would you describe the cause of death, sir?

Me: It was a collision sandwich. He was smushed to death. Of all the people to not only not block, but have a free sprint at your QB, you let it be Suh and Wake simultaneously?

Lawyer: Thank you, nothing further your Tannehill, I mean, your highness.

REVIEW | ‘A GAMBLER’S ANATOMY’ – The Gazette: Eastern Iowa Breaking News and Headlines

By By Rob Cline, correspondent

Apr 8, 2017 at 12:37 pm | Print View

Jonathan Lethems newest novel, A Gamblers Anatomy, is filled with masks both literal and metaphorical. Alexander Bruno, a professional backgammon play who makes his living defeating rich dilettantes, hits a catastrophic losing streak at the same time a blot begins to obscure his vision. The book follows Brunos seemingly ever more humiliating adventures, which lead to his face and his life being wholly remade.

Throughout the book, masks play an important role as characters including Bruno disguise themselves voluntarily or under duress. Lethem highlights the ways in which we are unknowable to each other and to ourselves, even when we try to strip all of our masks away.

Lethem, whose enthusiasm for the works of sci-fi author Philip K. Dick is well known, offers the reader the kind of mystery one might find in one of Dicks novels. Bruno may or may not be psychic. The blot and the growth responsible for it may or may not be dampening his abilities.

A Gamblers Anatomy also is infused with the kind of paranoia (which may not be paranoia at all) that might be found in a Thomas Pynchon novel. Bruno struggles to suss out the forces in play in his life and whether they part are part of a larger scheme.

Lethem is particularly effective in scenes featuring just two characters. He deftly uses dialogue to both illuminate and obscure his characters motivations as they jostle for position in relation to one another.

The books ending, which cannot be revealed here, is of the sort that will delight, puzzle, or disappoint some readers. I would argue that Lethem earns his unusual ending, but a case could be made that he does not and therefore leaves the reader unsatisfied at books end.

If that leaves you wondering whether you should read the book, Ill say this: I think its worth the gamble.

We make it easy to stay connected:

Mother Makes Ultimate Sacrifice for Unborn Child on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy – LifeNews.com

In a society where preborn children are treated as disposable property, and disregarded in the name of cold, sterile, euphemisms such as reproductive rights and choice, its rare to find a mother who actually does the opposite of putting herself above her child.

But in April 27ths episode of Greys Anatomy on ABC, we got to see that rarity played out in a heart-wrenching yet inspiring storyline.

Patient Veronica is in the ER at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital for back pain. Shes almost 35 weeks pregnant and her body is riddled with cancer. She decided to forgo cancer treatment because, as she put it, I didnt want to microwave the baby.

The storyline is a continuation from earlier this season when Veronica refused to abort her baby despite pressure from Doctor Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to kill her child to begin treatments for her terminal pancreatic cancer. (See previous article for factual information on cancer during pregnancy as well, as this episode did not accurately reflect the truth on the effects of chemotherapy and radiation on a preborn baby.)

The prognosis isnt good, as was expected, and as Veronica planned for. The doctors give her two months at best left to live, as the cancer has spread even further and is compressing her spinal cord. And they tell her that they must deliver the baby that day.

Follow LifeNews.com on Instagram for pro-life pictures.

All right. Lets cheer up, everybody. Were having a baby, Veronica announces optimistically, looking forward to having two months to spend with her baby and the babys father.

But during the C-section, things take a turn for the worst:

Amelia: Heart rates up to 130. Veronica, hows yourbreathing?

Veronica: Its fi um, its a little tough.

Jeremy: Whats happening? Whats going on?

Veronica: Hey, Jer, come on. Look at him.He has the sweetest eyes.

Arizona: Her sats are dropping. Shes persistentlytachycardic.

Amelia: Lets put her back on high-flow oxygen. It could be an embolus.

Veronica: Time to get him out of here.

Alex: Yeah, in a minute.

Arizona: If its an embolus, we dont have a minute.

Alex: She did all this so she can meet the baby.Just give them another damn minute.

Veronica: Jer, can you take him?

Alex: He needs to go to the NICU now.

Jeremy: And, uh, what what about Veronica?

Alex: Shes in good hands. Shell be just fine.Ill take good care of her.

Veronica: Jer, you stay with him.You promised. Im counting on you.

Jeremy: But I dont

Veronica: Go on. Stay with him.Ill see you in a little bit.

Amelia: Are we pushing heparin or going straightto thrombolytics?

Arizona: Thrombolytics are contraindicated. We need to do an embolectomy, and lets getan ivc filter.

Amelia: Veronica, youve thrown a blood clot, and its traveled all the way to your lungs. Its very serious. We need to remove it immediately,so were gonna need to put you under andopen up your chest.

Veronica: Is thatUhUh, will that work?

Amelia: The procedure will only last about a halfan hour.

Veronica: Will it work?

Amelia: Theres no guarantee youd survive it.

Veronica: And what if we didnt do anything?

Arizona: Veronica, we need to do this procedure. If we dont, you might not make it off thistable today.

Amelia: Okay, pressures dropping. Get a cart ready!

Veronica: No. I signed that dnr for a reason.

Arizona: You can rescind. Let us help you.

Veronica: I did what I wanted. My babysokay. It Im so tired.

Amelia: I know.I know.

Too bad Dr. Miranda Bailey wasnt around to see that beautiful baby alive and well thanks to his mother not listening to her pro-abortive advice.

Later, we see Veronica in her last moments and realize even further what an amazing mother she was to give up her own life for her childs:

Amelia: What do you want? What do you needright now?

Veronica: Im so cold.

Amelia: Ill get a warming blanket.

Veronica: No! No.Can you Will you just hold me?We did good? The babys good?

Amelia: Babys good.

Yes, Veronica, you did good. And your baby is so very good because of your beautiful sacrifice.

Greys Anatomy': Dr. Isaac Cross Has Diverticulitis, But What the Hell Is That?

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read on ifyou haventwatched Thursdaysepisode ofGreys Anatomy)

If you blinked in the midst of all the chaos of Dr. Maggie Pierces (Kelly McCreary) surgery, you might have missed Dr. Isaac Crosss (Joe Adler) dramatic diagnosis:Diverticulitis.

The surgical intern was being treated by Dr. Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) and to be honest, he came off as a little dramatic hypochondriac. Cross assumed he had symptoms that were much more serious than they actually were and demanded that all these expensive tests be run on him because he definitely had something.

Also Read: 'Grey's Anatomy': The Pettiness Got Real

At this point, Edwards was just plain annoyed by him but played along anyways because thats her job.

Well, turns out that the dramatic doctor did actually have something.Diverticulitis.

Except that diverticulitis isnt really that serious. According to the Mayo Clinic, its pretty common and there are more than 200,000 cases in the United States per year.

Sometimes small, protruding pouches called diverticula can form in the lining of your digestive system and dont really cause issues unless they become infected. Which is what happened to Cross and therefore caused diverticulitis, which causes nausea, abdominal pain and fever.

Unfortunately for Cross, though, thats not all he had. When Dr. Edwards and Dr. April Kepner (Sarah Drew) opened him up for surgery, they discovered that he also had abdominal tuberculosis.

Poor guy.

Shonda Rhimes, creator of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Scandal’, joins Planned Parenthood board – Washington Post

Shonda Rhimes, one of Hollywoods most popular and powerful women, has joined the national board of Planned Parenthood.

Rhimes, creator and producer of prime-time television shows Greys Anatomy and Scandal, assumes a formal role in the organization at a time when antiabortion activists and some Republican lawmakers have set their sights on defunding Planned Parenthood.

The fact is that womens health is under fire right now, Rhimes said in an interview with Elle Magazine, which first reported the news. And so to me, it feels like its important to help fight back.

Rhimes has used her shows to present leading female characters who are celebrated for exercising their agency, and for exploring a range of social issues including abortion. Olivia Pope, the heroine of Scandal, had an abortion in a 2015 episode that also included a floor fight in Congress over defunding Planned Parenthood. In 2011, a female character in Greys Anatomy also had an abortion.

[Scandal stuns views with an abortion scene]

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, told Elle that the organization would look to use Rhimess creative energy and storytelling ability to educate the public about the organizations work.

And she couldnt be joining us at a better time, Richard said. When so much basic health care is under attack, as we saw just a few weeks ago as a room full of men negotiated away maternity benefits for women, its never been more important for peoples stories to be told.

She was referring to a much-criticized White House meeting in which President Trump and Vice President Pence met with members of the House Freedom Caucus to discuss a plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Among the benefits under consideration for elimination was maternity care. The effort failed after factions within the GOP failed to agree on an overall plan. The Republican-led Congress also has been unable to come up with a measure to defund Planned Parenthood.

[Conservatives fall short of another goal: Defunding Planned Parenthood]

Anti-abortion groups and conservative lawmakers have for years sought to block the use of Medicaid funds to reimburse Planned Parenthood for services it provides to low-income patients. Federal law prohibits the use of Medicaid funds for abortions, except in the case of rape, incest or to the save the life of the mother.

Planned Parenthood has argued that the vast majority of its services involve providing basic gynecological health care, including Pap smears, offering low-cost contraceptives and providing referrals for other screenings, such as mammograms.

Rhimes, who has served on the Planned Parenthood Los Angeles board, told Elle that shes never used the organizations services but has friends who have.

The fact that Ive never had to use a Planned Parenthood, the fact that Ive never been in need of medical services I couldnt afford or didnt have access to, doesnt mean I shouldnt be concerned about the fact that other women dont have that access, she said.

Fans of Shonda Rhimes's shows already know Meredith Grey, Olivia Pope and Annalise Keating, and they're about to get acquainted with Alice Vaughan on "The Catch." Here's how Rhimes's newest TV drama uses some signature traits of a Shondaland show. (Nicki DeMarco/The Washington Post)

This Ancient Fish Represents The Earliest Known Evolutionary Evidence of Fingers – ScienceAlert

The four-limbed animals of the world have several things in common. Spines. Bilateral symmetry. And most of us have (or, in the case of birds, had) five digits at the end of each of our four limbs.

When and how these digits emerged in animals has been something of a mystery. Palaeontologists have just found the earliest evidence of this anatomical feature, in the fin of a fish that lived 380 million years ago.

The rudimentary digit bones may not look like much, but they mark one of the most important transitions in vertebrate evolution.

"We have made a major breakthrough in the origin of how the hand was first formed for all vertebrates," palaeontologist John Long of Flinders University in Australia told ScienceAlert.

"This is the first time that we have unequivocally discovered fingers locked in a fin with fin-rays in any known fish. The articulating digits in the fin are like the finger bones found in the hands of most animals," he said in a statement.

The transition from aquatic fish to four-limbed creature (tetrapod) is one of the most important in evolutionary history, yet there are significant gaps in our knowledge. One of those gaps has been the point at which fish emerged from the depths and started foraging in shallower waters - what's considered to be an intermediate step before crawling out onto land.

In order to complete that transition, animals would have needed something pretty vital for crawling - that is, hands and feet, digits and all.

This is where a specimen of an ancient lobe-finned fish called Elpistostege watsoni enters the picture. It's a type of tetrapod-like fish belonging to an order called Elpistostegalia, on the ancestral line that leads to tetrapods; our understanding of the emergence of tetrapods largely relies on what we know about that order.

(Cloutier et al., Nature, 2020)

But the elpistostegalian fossil record has been pretty scarce, with incomplete pectoral fin skeletal anatomy. Until 2010, when an almost complete 1.57-metre (5.15-foot) fossilisedE. watsoni skeleton was found in the Escuminac Formation of Miguasha in Quebec, Canada.

Long and his colleague palaeontologist Richard Cloutier from Universite du Quebec a Rimouski in Canada have been carefully studying the fossilised bones to see what they can tell us about this mysterious animal. This paper is the first in a series, and it describes how the pair and their team used CT scanning to discover the skeletal anatomy of the fin.

"We focused on the discovery of digit bones in the fin as this was a really spectacular discovery - the first definite (not controversial) case of a fish with finger bones," Long told ScienceAlert.

"Once we had compared our fin skeleton of Elpistostege with the arm and hand skeletons of terrestrial animals, it became clear that the rows of small digit bones were - in the evolutionary sense - the same as to phalange bones in the hands of land animals (like us)."

Comparison of early tetrapod limb anatomy. (Richard Cloutier and John Long)

The bones are not exactly true fingers, since they're tucked inside the fin like a mitten, and can't move freely. The fin still retains the outer fringe covered in fin-ray bones, called lepidotrichia; the fingers wouldn't be able to move freely unlessE. watsoni lost those.

But it does confirm the animal as an intermediate between fish and tetrapods. Although some have thought digits and carpals may be unique to tetrapods, we have had hints otherwise; for instance, the tetrapod-like arrangement of humerus, radius and ulna bones was discovered in lobe-finned fishes all the way back in 1892.

"The origin of digits relates to developing the capability for the fish to support its weight in shallow water or for short trips out on land. The increased number of small bones in the fin allows more planes of flexibility to spread out its weight through the fin," Cloutier explained.

"The other features the study revealed concern the structure of the upper arm bone or humerus, which also shows features present that are shared with early amphibians. Elpistostege is not necessarily our ancestor, but it is the closest we can get to a true 'transitional fossil', an intermediate between fishes and tetrapods."

The next part of the team's work describing the fossil will focus on the head and parts of the skull, making comparisons with early tetrapods to further trace those evolutionary connections.

"It's a truly amazing specimen indeed," Long said.

The research has been published in Nature.

X-Men Anatomy: The 5 Weirdest Things About Cyclops’ Body, Explained – CBR – Comic Book Resources

When it comes to understanding mutant superpowers, few seem quite as straightforward asX-Men leader,Cyclops. However, when one really thinks about the questions involved with his optic beams, such as where the energy comes from or how his neck accommodates the force it's putting out, suddenly his powers aren't so cut-and-dry.

Dig into the anatomy of Cyclops, and you might just find that there's a whole lot more than meets the eye.

RELATED:5 Reasons Jean Grey Is Perfect For Cyclops (& 5 It's Emma Frost)

One of the most puzzling problems with Cyclops' powers is whether they work with Newtonian physics. If every action creates an equal and opposite reaction, then you would think that every time Cyclops fires a beam of mountain-destroying force, his head or body would get flung backwards from the blast. The explanation for whythis doesn't happen is contained in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.

While the comics themselves rarely go into it, Cyclops' optic beams actually come from an alternate non-Einsteinian dimension of near limitless power. His eyes only serve as apertures to that space, meaning they're like little portals that the energy pours out of rather than a force his eyes produce. That's the explanation from the handbooks, at least, but there's a bit more to it than that.

RELATED:The X-Men's WEIRDEST Villain Just Took Down the Avengers' Nemesis

The alternate explanation Marvel offers for the source of Cyclops' power is solar radiation, explaining that his body passively absorbs all the energy it needs from the Sun and stores it inhisbody like a battery. This seems to be the working theory for the character in the comics themselves rather than the handbook, as frequent usage of his powers can drain Cyclops' power reserves in a way that doesn't quite jibe with the "portals to the punch dimension" explanation fans and handbooks like to throw around.

What's interesting is that Cyclops actually protects himself from his optic beams with a psionic field his mind unconsciously generates. His skin blocks or absorbs all of the energy so he does not pose a danger to himself. If he's clutching at his face, he just needs to be careful to close his fingers or else the beams will shoot through the cracks!

RELATED:The X-Men Just Proved Why They're Their Own Worst Enemies... Again

Fans of the character are likely familiar with his origin, which, in typical Scott Summers fashion, is extremely weird. As a child his parents were on a crashing plane (that was actually being attacked by aliens) and Scott and his brother Alex leapt from the wreckage. Scott's landing was a lot harsher than Alex's, so he suffered some brain damage that would prove his greatest curse once his powers developed.

At first, it seemed it was only because of the brain damage that Cyclops could not turn his powers on and off. The parts of his brain responsible for managing his powers were irreparably destroyed. Later, the comics revealedScott's limitations were all psychosomatic. Emma Frost was able to treat the disability with therapy and inX-Factor,Mr. Sinister instilled subconscious blocks against Scott using his powers against Sinister himself.

RELATED:X of Swords: Cable Just Teased Marvels Next X-Men Event

Out of the two explanations for the source of Cyclops' powers, the "battery" theory seems a lot more likely than the "portal" theory because of just how exhausted and fatigued Cyclops can get. While the handbook refers to Cyclops' limits as a purely mental block, time and again Cyclops strains himself to the end of his rope and nearly passes out from producing as powerful a beam as possible.Despite that, the "limits" to Cyclops' powers prove inconsistent.

In one issue, his limits may stop at busting through a barrier, while another may have him casually output enough destructive force to destroy a swath of forest and the Sentinel within it. It makes more sense to say he just has varying levels of power than to say he arbitrarily feels fatigued from one feat to the next -- especially since it's unclear just how much power he can absorb.

Much like Scott's own body, his family's bodies can harmlessly absorb the optic beams he produces. Any time Scott and his brother Alex fought, it meant Cyclops could never quite get a leg up through raw power alone. Of course, the reverse also holds true -- Scott's own body absorbs Havok's power beams just as easily. The two normally need to duke it out with their fists rather than their energy beams and their immunity to one another's powers is even a recurring trend with other mutant families like Banshee and Black Tom Cassidy.

Adkins admits emailing photos of male anatomy | Local News | The … – The News (subscription)

The day before law enforcement arrested the Rev. Kenneth Adkins in August 2016, he admitted to Georgia Bureau of Investigators agents he sent photos of his male anatomy to a man hes accused of molesting when that person was underage.

Adkins is on trial in Glynn County Superior Court regarding multiple felonies for allegedly engaging in sexual acts with two victims A.J., a boy, and T.V., a girl when they were both 15 years old, between August 2009 and March 2010.

Prosecutors played for the jury a recording of the GBIs interview with Adkins, in which after a friendly back-and-forth, the agents began pressing Adkins for clearer answers on his involvement with evidence they already had in hand.

At one point, they specifically questioned his involvement with two photographs of a black males private parts sent from Adkins public relations companys email account to A.J. in November 2014.

One agent could be heard saying, I know it was sent from your phone to your email to (A.J.).

Adkins then said he only sent the photos because A.J. asked for them. That also occurred well after A.J. reached majority age, and Adkins reiterated that he did not mess around with children.

Lawrence Kelly, a special agent with the GBI who specializes in mobile phone data forensics, said metadata pulled from the emailed images showed they were sent from a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, operating on a Verizon network. The data also showed the phone was registered the day before the images were sent, which means the phone was likely, but not conclusively, obtained the day it was registered.

When questioned by Adkins attorney Kevin Gough if it was possible Adkins could have sent the photos accidentally, Kelly said it was. Kelly also acknowledged that the timestamps of when the email was sent and received indicated that, as Gough suggested in a question, it was sent from Georgia and received by A.J. while on Army deployment in Germany.

A contention made by prosecutors is the photos indicate a physical relationship between Adkins and A.J., though Kelly admitted it would be rather difficult to have a physical relationship at that immediate time, separated by an ocean.

According to investigators, one woman, J.C. who was of age at the time told them she, A.J. and Adkins engaged in sexual acts at an area hotel, though she was initially reluctant to do so. Adkins allegedly warned her about saying anything about it, and gave her $200 to remain quiet.

In the GBI interview, Adkins, at first, denied getting a room for A.J. or the three of them, saying he frequently reserved rooms for any number of functions. But, again, pressed on the topic, Adkins said, I dont think I was in the room with A.J. and J.C., and reiterated that he did not have sex with them.

At the end of testimony Tuesday, the defense had to wrap up one of the basic logistics of trial work not typically seen by the public Adkins had run out of ties. Gough asked Superior Court Judge Stephen Scarlett if he could give his client his own tie, but after a short discussion in which the participants appeared to understand the light humor of the situation in comparison to those of such gravity beforehand Gough was allowed to take the necessary sartorial items to Adkins at the Glynn County Detention Center during a meeting scheduled for later Tuesday.

Court is scheduled to resume with testimony by A.J. at 9 a.m. today at the Glynn County Courthouse.

Tunefind’s Top TV/Film Syncs of 2019: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ On Top for Third Year, Billie Eilish Rules Artists List – Billboard

For the year in a row, no series had a bigger year when it came to TV music syncs than Grey's Anatomy.

Tunefind, a music discovery website that partners with The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard to present the Top TV Songs chart each month (ranking songs that appear in TV shows each month using a combination of metrics from Tunefind and Nielsen Music), has revealed its 2019 year-end data, sorting the top songs, shows, movies and more based on traffic and interaction on the Tunefind website.

After reigning in 2017 and 2018, ABC's Grey's Anatomy rules the top shows list yet again, maintaining its reputation as a tastemaker for music discovery on television. In 2019, the series premiered its 16th season. Expect to see the show gracing this list in 2020, as well, as the drama, whose music supervisor is Alexandra Patsavas, has already been renewed for season 17.

Programs supervised either solely or in part by Patsavas take the top two spots on the year-end top shows tally, as Lucifer, co-supervised by Patsavas with Justin Kamps, ranks at No. 2. That's a three-spot jump for Lucifer in 2019 and is two positions higher than its previous year-end best, No. 4, in 2017.

Suits, Peaky Blinders and The Blacklist round out the top five, while the top new show of 2019, Euphoria, ranks at No. 6.

While Grey's Anatomy is the year's top show overall, runner-up Lucifer contains the year's top song, "My Love Will Never Die," performed by AG and Claire Wyndham, from the season four finale, the show's first season on Netflix after FOX initially canceled the series in May 2018.

"My Love Will Never Die" is followed by a fully instrumental track: "The Night King," from the pivotal third episode of Game of Thrones' eighth and final season. The song was scored, like the show's entire run, by Ramin Djawadi.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse reigns as the top movie of 2019 with a budget of $25 million or more, a fitting rule given its soundtrack's No. 2 peak on the Billboard 200 dated Jan. 26 (and seven weeks in all within the chart's top 10). Its most prominent song, "Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)," by Post Malone and Swae Lee, crowned the Billboard Hot 100 for a week in January.

After rules the list of top movies with a budget of less than $25 million, while Netflix's Someone Great wraps as the year's top streaming movie.

As for artists, Ruelle continues her hot streak, as she's never ranked outside the top two of the top artists of each year, ruling 2018's list and ranking at No. 2 in 2017. In 2019, she's No. 2 again, below Billie Eilish, who crowns the top artists of 2019 ranking. Eilish was everywhere in 2019, and television was no exception, with her music appearing in Dickinson, Hawaii Five-O, Veronica Mars, Riverdale and more.

The top composer of 2019 is Ezra Furman, who helmed the soundtrack to the 2019 Netflix film Sex Education, followed by Labrinth, who did the same for Euphoria.

Check out the full ranking for 2019 below, via Tunefind.

Study of Human anatomy made easy with Augmented and Virtual Reality – OpenGov Asia

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are helping health and science students at the Bendigo campus of Australias La Trobe University to better understand the intricacies of human anatomy.

As reported, the recently installed technology in the campus anatomy laboratory and library is being used by students studying biomedical science, dentistry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology, among other disciplines.

Background

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar said the Universitys latest investment in new technology further demonstrates the Universitys commitment to building a strong rural health workforce.

There are students at the Bendigo campus who all need a deep and sophisticated understanding of the human body.

These students are in new courses like the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical), as well as dentistry and a suite of allied health programs.

The state-of-the-art technology, combined with the newly refurbished anatomy labs, is helping students develop the knowledge and skills many will need when they start work in a rural health clinic or regional hospital after graduation.

A Lecturer in Anatomy, Dr Anita Zacharias, explained that technology makes the study of human anatomy more affordable and flexible for students. Also, it makes the learning experience an enriching one.

About the initiative

The anatomy students already learn from working with skeletons, models, and human specimens.

Adding AR and VR to the mix enables them to visualise and manipulate anatomical structures, which deepens their understanding of muscle function, and improves spatial awareness.

Furthermore, this means that students can access highly detailed 3D images, clinical cases and quizzes anywhere. It may be in their homes, on public transport, or wherever they have access to a phone, tablet or computer.

With AR, students can superimpose images of anatomical structures over a peer who can perform movements along with the app, to better understand muscle function.

While AR is completely transportable and available 24 hours a day, VR is used on campus with University supplied headsets.

The cost of using the AR technology is AU$ 10 per student, compared to more than AU$ 100 for a single textbook.

Expanding reach

La Trobe has invested AU$ 2.6 million this year on building and refurbishing science laboratories at its Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga campuses.

This was done in part to accommodate students in the new Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical), which launched in 2019.

Fifteen new students will start in the program across the two campuses in 2020, bringing the total number enrolled to 30.

Compared to last year, first preferences through VTAC and UAC for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) are up 56% in Bendigo, and 146% in Albury Wodonga.

The selection process targets students with rural or regional backgrounds, who are seeking a career in the rural health workforce.

More than 77% of students studying health-related disciplines at La Trobes regional campuses are from a rural or regional background.

The AR and VR technology has been rolled out across La Trobes Melbourne, Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga campuses in recent months.

‘The Irishman’ | Anatomy of a Scene – The New York Times

Im Martin Scorsese. And I made the movie, The Irishman. It is an honor for me to be here tonight to present this award to my dear friend, Mr. Frank Sheeran. Were talking about a sequence that takes place in the Latin Casino. You have this wonderful reception for Frank Sheeran, who, really, its a highlight of his life. All the representatives of the power structure of that part of the country are there to celebrate him, supposedly. And it really is obviously its for the union, its for Hoffa, and its to support Hoffa over Tony Provenzano. And its to show his support for Jimmy, and Jimmys support for Frank. [APPLAUSE] The highlight of my life. Thank you very very, very much. And this man, James Riddle Hoffa, is the guy that gets the job done. Underlying all that, you have the darker elements, which are the men who are in real control of the situation. Any case, from the deepest part of my heart, I thank you all. Because I dont really deserve all this. But I have bursitis, and I dont deserve that, either. The structure of the scene is all about the looks. The dialogue doesnt matter until you have this extraordinary moment, I think, between Russell and Frank, where Russell gives Frank this special ring that only three people have. And so for me, the playing of the scene had to be weaving all the sense of a celebration, so to speak, or family gathering, weaving all that around these beats, all strung together by the music: Jerry Vale. (SINGING) Please It has a very melodramatic tragedy to it. You know, a sweetness and a sadness at the same time. (SINGING) Say you and your Spanish eyes Its like you go to an event, and there are factions. There are factions. And one faction may be polite, but theyre not going to be smiling too much. But theyre there. During that time, certain things are said. Looks are given, which are harder than words. But the main looks Anna Paquin. A whole sequence revolves around Annas Peggy, that is picking up of the subtext of whats going on. There is trouble happening. There are problems. And she knows I mean, particularly even Anna Paquin said, when she did the dancing shot, and she looks over, and shes says, I never saw looks like that from people. She said it chilled her as a person. Only three people in the world have one of these, and only one of them is Irish. I have one, Angelo has one, and now you have one. So really its about the balancing and the editing of the frames, which encompass medium shots hardly any close-ups. Usually medium to medium close-up, like right below the shoulders up. That entails seeing a little more of the body language rather than giant close-ups. The reason for that is the atmosphere and the environment around them has to be present in the frame, because that affects them. And there you see them in that environment and that atmosphere. If its too close, I think you objectify it in a way. You push the audience away. But one of the hardest things to do was to get them in the frame in the wide shot, looking down, as Jerry Vale is singing in the background. Theyre like the gods overlooking this world that they created in a way. Theres one shot from their point of view, with a long lens of Jimmy walking around and suddenly saying hello to Angelo Russo, played by Harvey Keitel. The reason is a personal reason. And that was that Harvey Keitel and Al Pacino were never in the same frame together in any movie. Things have gotten that with our friend again. And some people are having serious problems with him. And its at a point where youre going to have to talk to him and tell him its what it is. Once I settled on the size of the frame and the size of the people in the frame, I know that, then, it was really myself and my editor, Thelma, in the editing room, playing with the dialogue and playing with the looks and the pauses the pauses and the silences. These are the higher-ups. Well, hes a higher-up, too. I mean, theres no one Not like this. You know that. Oh, come on, Frank. If they can whack a president, they can whack a president of the union. You know it, and I know it.
