Doctors are one in saying that your diet has a great impact on your life expectancy. What you eat can significantly determine how healthy you are. There is just one problem, though, there are different kinds of diets available out there. Each of these diets is being advocated by a different set of health specialists.

So the question remains, is there one particular diet that you should follow? Will it then help you live longer.

Factors Involved

According to the health authority site NHS, one secret to living longer is by following a healthy lifestyle. This would include developing a good exercise routine, staying away from cigarettes, reducing alcohol intake, or, if possible, shunning alcohol. But what is the amount of food that you can eat? Recent studies showed that reducing the number of calories that you eat every day can create a positive impact on your life expectancy.

Reducing Calorie-Intake

A study that was published in the Cell Metabolism Journal revealed that if you reduce the number of calories that you eat by 15% in a span of two years, you will start seeing astounding effects on your body. According to the study, this will help in protecting you from certain diseases like diabetes and cancer. It can even create a positive impact on dementia, which means that your risk of developing this neurological illness will be reduced.

The study, which looked at 53 non-obese individuals, in the age group of 21 to 50, discovered that even if the individuals who participated were already healthy, they still derive benefits from a diet where calorie intake is restricted.

In another study, which was published in Science Translational Medicine, showed that extreme restriction of calories for 5 days in a month for 3 months greatly helped the body fight against aging. Researchers gave participants plant-based vegetable soups and energy bars.

Another study published in Science Translational Medicine also showed an extremely calorie-restricted diet, practiced for five days a month for three months, help the body with aging.

Number of Calories

With these studies telling everyone to cut down calories, the only thing left to be answered is how many calories will you need in a day? As per NHS, men would require 2,500kcal, while women would need 2,000kcal. In some diets, a low-calorie diet would be between 800kcal to 1,500kcal.

Always remember, before you venture into this diet, better seek the advice of your general practitioner. Aside from being healthy, other factors that will affect the number of calories you take in per day would include your age, physical activity, and for women, whether pregnant or breastfeeding.

The Ardmore Institute of Health presented two local organizations with special Partner of the Year awards for their efforts to promote healthy lifestyles. This was the first year the award was presented with Ardmore Family YMCA and Ardmore Parks and Recreation receiving the honors.

AIH Program Director Michelle Sinkler said it was difficult to pick only one partner of the year because both have been such strong allies in achieving the mission of improving the health and vitality of the public in order to live more meaningful lives.

In order for citizens to make daily healthy lifestyle choices, the opportunity must be made available and encouraged, Sinkler said. Ardmore Institute of Health has sought you out community change agents and community champions and you have partnered with AIH this year and in years past to provide the opportunity for Carter County Citizens to lead physically active lives.

Sinkler said the Ardmore Family YMCA has partnered with AIH in a variety of ways over the years, however their help in bringing pickleball to the community is one partnership that stands out in particular. Not only did they open their facility to host the pickleball tournament during the first annual Ardmore Senior Games, the YMCA remained open to those wanting to learn the game for months afterwards.

If you wanted to learn pickleball and participate in pickleball you could come to the Y and play for free for six months, Sinkler said. They have encouraged that game to grow, and now its grown so much that I dont even know how many people are playing on a weekly basis.

The second partner of the year award went to Ardmore Parks and Recreation, and once again Sinkler said they have worked together on many programs. However their efforts in bringing the aforementioned Senior Games to town, put the parks department over the edge.

When Ardmore Institute of Health wanted to bring the Senior Games games for people who are 50 years of age and older to Ardmore, we found out the Ardmore Parks and Recreation was also interested in the same thing, Sinkler said. For two years now they have been our partner with the Ardmore Senior Games. The first year we had 74 participants and this year we increased that number to around 100. Next year theyll be taking over the project full-time.

While summer is a good time off to unwind, recharge, connect with family and friends, and explore new cultures and destinations, we often find ourselves indulging with food and drinks and skipping on exercise. Knowing that our waist line has expanded puts us in a panic mode or regret that throws away all the fun time we had.

Here are tips on how to get back to your healthy routine of good food and exercise, so you can remember the good times without regret.

> Start with baby steps. It becomes overwhelming when you put a task too hard to accomplish, so breaking it up into small parts can help make it easier to complete. For example, instead of planning to restart exercise five days a week for an hour each time, start by three days a week for a half hour each and then build upon it.

> Rehydrate your body. Water is the key to get your metabolism to work properly and help get rid of toxins. It also gives the skin the glow it needs and protects it from chaffing in this heat. We need about eight glasses of water a day or two litres minimum, as requirements increase in exercise and heat.

> Load up on fruits and vegetables. They are rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that help fight free radicals that damage the various cells. Fruits and vegetables also keep a healthy digestive tract and nourish your hair and nails after being beat up by the sun.

> Stay away from meat for few days. Add on more vegetarian options like beans, lentils and various grains like millet and quinoa to your daily meals. Don't forget to get fish often as it's high in omega-3 oil that protects cell membranes.

> Take care of your emotional and mental health. Even though you just arrived from vacation, sometimes the toll of family duties and running around from place to place could leave your body and mind drained. Get a body treatment like a massage or a scrub that can help relieve some of the stress, or do some yoga or meditation to help you clear your mind and recharge your energy.

> Get seven to eight hours of sleep daily. Good sleep helps your brain function properly and prepares you for the daily tasks that include making the right decisions in your daily life. One of those decisions is making healthy food choices and controlling portions.

Find below a recipe for an energising nutritious drink that helps boost your mood.

>1 cup blueberries

> cup fresh or frozen raspberries

> 1/3c sliced cooked beets

> cup plain fat free Greek yogurt

> cup fresh orange juice

> 1 teaspoon honey

Put all ingredients in a blender and add ice cubes as needed, blend at high speed and enjoy.

Volunteering: Develop a healthy lifestyle while helping others – Edmonds Beacon

These are just a few of the many volunteer opportunities that exist in Snohomish County. No matter where you live, we can find something for you. Questions? Call me at 425-374-6374.

Sometimes Im asked, Why is volunteering good for us?

UnitedHealth Group commissioned a national survey of 3,351 adults and found that the overwhelming majority of participants reported feeling mentally and physically healthier after a volunteer experience.

They report the following:

76 percent of people who volunteered in the last 12 months said that volunteering has made them feel healthier;

94 percent of people who volunteered in the last 12 months said that volunteering improved their mood;

78 percent of them said that volunteering lowered their stress levels.

You too can experience these good things by volunteering. For example;

Student Mentors

With school starting soon, help will be needed in the classroom and after school. Teaching experience is not required, just a desire to help students do their best. A few hours volunteering a week can change someones life, including yours!

SHIBA

SHIBA is a program of Homage Senior Services. It stands for Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors. You are trained (40 hours to be exact) to help people make informed decisions. With this training you will be able to help Medicare eligible clients of all ages make choices regarding insurance. You assist people with problem-solving and understanding the complex world of medical insurance.

Food Banks

There is a serious food problem in Washington state. Children and the elderly are the most affected, making up over 50 percent of the people utilizing the emergency food system. For school-aged children, according to the Food Lifeline website (www.foodlifeline.org), Washington state ranks 49th in the nation for summer breakfast participation. While you may not be able to help with that issue, there is plenty to do helping food banks take care of their clients. All the food banks in Snohomish County can use your help. RSVP works with most of them. You can work behind the scenes, with clients or both.

Volunteer Transportation

Imagine not having a car. Imagine trying to get around using the bus. Imagine, for example, living in Stanwood and your doctor is in Edmonds. This is what life is like for many of our Volunteer Transportation clients. They dont have a car to run the errands and take care of the tasks everyday life demands. You can help by giving rides. You choose where you drive and how often. A perfect driving record is NOT required.
