Netflix roasted for leading viewers astray with health misinformation in Gwyneth Paltrows Goop show – RT

Gwyneth Paltrows wellness brand Goop has secured its own show on Netflix and anti-pseudoscience crusaders are demanding its cancellation, insisting the doyenne of jade vaginal eggs is hurting people with health misinformation.

Paltrows medical faddism does real harm by contributing to the erosion of critical thinking, University of Alberta researcher Tim Caulfield tweeted on Monday after Netflix posted a teaser for the premiere of The Goop Lab later this month, setting off a firestorm of panic among a certain stripe of science enthusiast. The idea of an entire show devoted to whatever bizarre health practices the actress can dredge up from obscurity - the teaser mentioned psychic readings, exorcisms, and cold therapy - has triggered calls for its cancellation from skeptics who fear an outbreak of 'monkey see, monkey do' among its audience.

Caulfield wrote a whole article last month eviscerating the celebrity wellness industry, insisting that while it might seem like a relatively harmless form of profiteering, it actually gives cover to scientifically-unproven health practices. Non-pharmaceutical procedures like cryotherapy, gluten-free dieting, and IV vitamin therapy - to say nothing of the jade egg that made Goop a household name - would be utterly obscure if not for their celebrity boosters, he argued, accusing celebrities of contributing to a culture of untruth and confusing people about what a healthy lifestyle entails.But pharmaceutical companies - FDA-approved drugs being the preferred route to health for many critics of Paltrow and other celebrity wellness gurus - spend over $6.4 billion advertising their products to customers every year. Some of these ads use celebrities - who can forget then-presidential candidate Bob Doles star turn in that Viagra ad, or Olympic athlete Bruce (now Caitlin) Jenners fulsome praise of painkiller Vioxx on the Larry King show? Vioxx may have gone on to kill tens of thousands of people, but at least they werent taken in by some snake-oil seller like Goop. Surely, Americans should have the right to choose whether theyd prefer to pop pills, juice, or shove a jade egg where the sun doesnt shine?

Not to Caulfield and the others who joined him in speaking out against The Goop Lab. An absence of critical thinking and a favorable feeling for celebrity anecdotes have combined to short-circuit our natural skepticism, he insists, going so far as to link the Goop craze with the fake news epidemic. Indeed, hes written an entire book slamming Paltrow and Goop - apparently hoping readers will stop uncritically listening to and funneling money to celebrity wellness gurus and start uncritically listening to and funneling money to him instead. Its a microcosm of the fake news epidemic in general, which exists largely in the minds of establishment journalists angry when their audiences prefer competing narratives.

A change.org petition, apparently launched last year when the show was first proposed, warns that Goop is scaring people away from vaccinating their children and warns that a measles epidemic underway in Washington at the time would worsen if people take the celebritys advice. Ironically, the petition features an image of a baby suffering a rash in reaction to receiving the smallpox vaccine - though it had been erroneously passed off as a child with measles by CNN. Paltrow is routinely excoriated for introducing the world to holistic health psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, who espouses a link between vaccines and autism, in 2018, even though the Goop website dismisses the vaccine-autism link as a conspiracy theory in the only vaccine-related article it has published.

The petition author isnt the only one to draw a direct causal line between Paltrows show and declining enthusiasm for vaccines - some went even further and suggested children would die of vaccine-preventable diseases if The Goop Lab was allowed to air.

Others (accidentally) admitted that real scientists already have health shows, and that those are carried by Netflix already.

While the common line seemed to be that the bizarre treatments publicized by Goop were harmful, even predatory

some pointed out that not all medical treatments were particularly scientific or healthy, either.

Paltrows show may give a voice to the most ridiculous pseudoscience, but censoring it because harm is a step down a slippery slope that ends in barring coverage of all treatments that fall outside the scope of orthodox medicine from the airwaves. Every medical innovation has faced doubt before becoming widely accepted - better to beef up ones own critical thinking abilities than impose censorship in service to the lowest common denominator.

Having shared his experiences through a workshop on Natural Living, at an event organised by Mother Earth Environmental Consciousness Society (MEECONS) in Vizag, Minimalist and Naturalist Shailender speaks with Yo! Vizag on how to have a healthy lifestyle.

Dressed in a white dhoti, sporting a turban and a long beard, Shailender resembles a yogi. So, it comes as a surprise to know that he is a Computer Science Engineer with five years of experience in the IT industry. While working for different IT companies, he realised his calling and quit his job. I stayed at Sai Geetha Ashram for ten years and learned the essence of natural living. Ive been practising a chemical-free lifestyle, says Shailender.

One doesnt have to be a yogi in order to lead a life in coherence with nature. By making little alterations in ones daily routine, one can live life the natural way, even in urban spaces, he further adds. Here are some insights from Shailender.

Milk and milk products:

Milk is best avoided as per Shailender. However, if it is an essential part of your diet, then boil the milk over a small flame for a long time before consuming it. Buttermilk is always better than milk. To avoid milk tea and to get sufficient minerals, calcium and anti-oxidants, Shailender suggests the recipe of herbal tea. Moringa (50%), pudina, tulasi, curry leaves (25%) all leaves should be dried in the shade and then kept for an hour in the sun covered with a cloth. They should then be crushed and stored in a bottle. While preparing the tea, add one spoon of these crushed leaves to boiling water and allow it to infuse. After an hour, filter it, add jaggery, saindava lavanam, and lemon juice, and consume it.

Cooking utensils:

Use earthen pots, iron tavas and brass vessels. Avoid pressure cooker, aluminium and non-stick cookware.

Water for consumption:

The drinking water supplied to homes is treated with chlorine and fluorine. We can consume that directly, and our body also adapts to it and does its own detoxification. However, it is better to keep water in the open for a minimum time of one hour to 24 hours. This ensures that water imbibes the energy of the sun, moon, and stars. For maximum benefits, he suggests taking a container, adding chilliginjalu and moringa seeds, vattiveru (Chrysopogon zizanioides) and pasupu kommu (turmeric). So while, vattiveru gives minerals, turmeric works as an antiseptic. The pot should be covered with a cloth. Natural filtration takes place, minerals are added, and chlorine goes away. We store the water in a pot, put a copper coin in it and consume, shares Shailender.

Clothes we wear:

Synthetic clothes block the skin pores harming us. Also, when disposed of, these wont decompose easily, becoming a major threat to the environment. Cotton, therefore, is much recommended. Now, with BT cotton harming the environment, one should stick to organic cotton options.

Preventing cancer:

Due to depleting oxygen in cells, a person is prone to getting cancer. One way to prevent this disease is by avoiding acidic food. Humans these days cannot sustain only on fruits, and the food that we cook is acidic. Eating some raw food daily can help maintain balance, Shailender shares.

As a result of getting fit and healthy with a friend, 62 percent agree they are more likely to stick with a new plan. And one in four believes they burn off more calories when working out with a friend than they do alone. A third of those polled in the study, commissioned by WW Weight Watchers even admitted they would give up sooner without the help of another person to keep them going. Half put the success with a friend down to feeling more motivated, 44 percent enjoy planning meals together and a quarter prefers having someone to exercise with.

But the average adult admitted to falling out of a gym routine after 10 weeks and slipping up around eight weeks into a diet.

Zoe Griffiths, the global director of nutrition at WW: It's interesting to see how much of a positive influence a partner can have on Brits sticking to diet plans and fitness routines.

"Whether it's giving up something together such as chocolate, or hitting milestones together like five or 10k runs, it always helps having someone else going through the same emotions.

"You're more likely to stick to a wellness commitment or diet when you do it with someone else you can lean on for support and motivation.

"It helps you to be more open and honest about your diet, makes activities like working out more enjoyable and softens the fear of failure."

The study also found two thirds are planning on getting healthy with their other half, while a fifth is taking the plunge with a friend.

An eighth are even attempting to make a lifestyle change with their colleague.

A third of those polled admitted they usually need to be motivated when sticking to a health plan, with their friend considered to be the best at giving them a boost when they need it.

More than a fifth (22 percent) also said it's easier to be active if it means spending time with a relative or buddy.

And one in four finds following a plan with a fitness partner both confidence boosting and fun.

A further 22 percent said if they're following an exercise regime with a companion they wouldn't quit even if they wanted to because they wouldn't want to be the one to let the team down.

Similarly, three in 10 admitted to cancelling on a gym buddy in the past, which left 48 percent feeling guilty and more than a quarter feeling lazy.

When it comes to eating, one in four prefer meal-planning with someone else rather than going it alone and 15 percent admitted it is most difficult to stick to a healthy diet when eating out with friends.

A fifth of those polled struggle with their food plans when on holiday.

Zoe Griffiths added: "With the pressure of new year, new you ever prevalent, we want people to feel as though they are set-up for the best possible chance of success when it comes to achieving their wellness goals.

"A unique WW insight has shown than members who join together are likely to lose up to 14 per cent more weight than those who join alone, so the results from this study make total sense."

The gut microbiome in disease and health – McGill Tribune

There are thousands of different bacterial species living inside our intestines. This environment, called the gut microbiome, provides the body with key vitamins and ensures a healthy immune system. The composition of the gut microbiome is key: Dysbiosis, a condition that occurs when bad bacteria take over the gut, is linked to a wide variety of diseases ranging from inflammatory bowel disease to autism spectrum disorder.

A group of researchers from McGill and the Universit de Montral found that dysbiosis is often correlated with fibromyalgia, a disease marked by chronic pain, constant fatigue, and gastrointestinal problems.

Their results were published in a paper in the journal Painin November. Dr. Amir Minerbi, a pain physician-scientist at the Rambam Health Campus in Haifa, Israel, was one of the papers lead researchers.

Fibromyalgia is very frustrating for patients, Minerbi said in an interview with The McGill Tribune. They seem okay on the outside, but inside, [] it feels like having the flu for a very long time [.] It is frustrating for physicians, because we are not good at diagnosing fibromyalgia. It takes four years to diagnose, and [] after diagnosis, even with the best treatment, [the patient] may still [experience] symptoms.

This frustration was the catalyst for investigating the relationship between the gut and fibromyalgia. Their hypothesis was justified, since the microbiome has been associated with other chronic pain disorders, such as chronic dysfunction pelvic pain and chronic fatigue syndrome.

In the study, researchers collected stool samples from people with and without fibromyalgia. Through sequencing bacterial DNA found in the stool samples, they found that people with fibromyalgia had more bacterial species associated with factors such as inflammation, inhibition of brain activity, and metabolism of organic acids within their microbiome. Furthermore, patients with more pronounced symptoms of fibromyalgia had higher amounts of bacteria associated with such factors.

These findings, however, are still preliminary and represent only a correlation rather than causation. There is still the possibility that fibromyalgia causes an altered microbiome, instead of the other way around. Nevertheless, this opens the door for better diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia through examining the health of patients microbiomes.

Promoting a healthy gut microbiome might entail incorporating a wide variety of plant-based and fermented foods with plenty of prebiotics into ones diet. Prebiotics are compounds that alter the gut microbiome to grow beneficial microbes. They are frequently absent from the current Western diet, which is characterized by large amounts of meat and processed foods.

At McGill, the Microbiome Project aims to promote good bacteria and avoid dysbiosis. Founded by Julian Russell, U2 Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and John Weilenmann, M1 Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the club has hosted numerous workshops on how to make all types of foodstuffs, such as hot sauces and natural wines, that are based on fermentation and therefore contain plenty of live bacteria called probiotics. The group hopes to steer clear of artificial chemicals commonly used in commercial products. They also aim to tackle other aspects of life that promote a healthy microbiome, such as exercising and sleeping enough.

We focus on various types of fermentation, as well as a lifestyle component, Russell said. A healthy body and a healthy gut go together, so we encourage people to take their exercise and sleep seriously [.] If youre not living a healthy lifestyle, [that is] going to negatively impact the good bacteria that live in you, [allowing] you to be susceptible to pathogens.

I love the marathon because its an event where there are all different types of people aiming for the same goal, Vannya Istarinda tells Claudia Rindiantika. Age, your work, gender, race nothing matters because at the start line everyone is the same.

Vannya Istarindas big news is that she is engaged to Arya Bakrie and will get married next year. Things are getting serious now, the 24-year-old food and fashion entrepreneur says, with a smile, of the couples preparations for the big day. But its not that hectic yet. We have just started planning, so everything is still not too crazy. The wedding is not until next year, so we still have time.

Its a Thursday afternoon, the day of Prestiges It Girl photo shoot, when Vannya walks into the studio. Our first impression is how friendly she is. She beams as she is greeted and shakes hands with everyone in the room. While retouching her makeup and getting her hair done, she has a chit-chat with the team with an amiable voice and constant smile.Photography completed, Vannya sits down for her interview. After her engagement to Arya, she tells us, her most important news is that she has been working hard on building her business ventures this year: clothing line Dua Awan and healthy restaurant Greenery.

We are finalising the new website for Dua Awan thats something I am paying a lot of attention to right now, she says, because, as you know, everything is online these days and thats a big market to tap into. I know there are a lot of negatives about the impact of social media on society but used properly its great for communicating to customers and for business. I find it really useful, and I think its actually a large part of my business today, likewise Greenery. A lot of people sell things online now that they couldnt have sold before, utilising a social media platform or e-commerce platform that is robust and full-featured in a good way. Instagram is a massive platform for selling nowadays.Vannya studied Architecture at the University of Indonesia before taking a double degree and transferring to Curtin University in Perth, Australia. At that time, I really loved design, she says. My mom also took architecture, so I thought that was a really good thing to do.

She switched to fashion after school simply because I have always been interested in clothes and fashion. As an architect, I am a designer too, and moving from architecture to fashion was logical. Right now, its what I really want to do but hopefully, in the future I could continue designing architecturally.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a big issue for Vannya. It was during my second year at university that I realised I needed to change, she recalls. I was living a really unhealthy lifestyle, and that lifestyle really impacted my daily life, confidence and well-being.

I realised then that health is such an important thing. Health is our wealth. Its something you can never take for granted. If you always have an unhealthy lifestyle, you will regret it one day when you get sick. So, investing in eating healthy food and a good exercise regime is very important.

Vannya admits that it was hard to forget old habits and switch to a better lifestyle. I had to push myself every week to work out because before that I hadnt been taking exercise. Then I started eating better more vegetables and fruit. Thats what has gotten me into the habit of having a healthy lifestyle, and Ive never left it since.

She turned her newfound fitness into becoming a sports influencer. She was a brand ambassador for Adidas for a few years. Sport is important as one way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Vannya points out.

This is why I started running marathons. I love athletics and I think the marathon is an event where there are all different types of people aiming for the same goal. Age, your work, gender, race nothing matters because at the start line everyone is the same. Throughout the journey of a marathon, everyone is always supporting each other. It is like a massive movement of positive vibes and good energy.

Vannya Istarinda

Vannya recently ran in two of six major marathons in the world: Tokyo in 2015 and Chicago the following year. It started from being consistent every single weekend, to running on car-free days. I trained for a whole year and would run every Sunday. Each time I would run an increased distance, and I kept increasing my goal each week. I was initially in disbelief of the things I could achieve. It was only because I built a passion for running and kept training consistently that I could cross the finish line, Besides being a self-satisfying achievement, completing these races taught me a lot about time management, dedication and sacrifice from months of training to get to the finish line. I think running marathons teaches you to be persistent and patient. It also teaches you to believe in yourself that if you keep doing it, you can finish it. I hope I shall be able to run more of the world major marathons in the future.

Marathon training aside, Vannyas regular exercise routine is daunting. I do HIIT (high-intensity interval training) three times a week, resistance and strength training twice a week, and a little Pilates too, she informs us. I also do a lot of cardio training, because I love it! I am a morning person. Getting up early and working out gives me plenty of energy and makes me more productive throughout the day.

What motivates her to exercise? When you have a goal to finish a marathon or any other health objective, you will be motivated most of the time, Vannya declares. I love the feeling of running and I love working out, so it is never a chore or something I have to push myself to do daily, but something very enjoyable for me. On days when I feel lazy, I do fun exercises like zumba with my friends.

With excitement, Vannya adds: I love being healthy. And I really support people that love living a healthy lifestyle. Especially nowadays there are a lot of junk foods fried food, for example and processed products that are quite unhealthy. There are a lot of things out there that can distract you from living a healthy lifestyle. Even just being stressed out can be really bad for your health. So you need to take time for yourself and to de-stress. Thats so important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The conversation witches back to food. I must be very careful about dairy products as I am gluten and lactose intolerant. Its important to learn more about your body and to avoid allergens and intolerants so that your body can function and repair at its best.

For breakfast, I would have coconut yoghurt, fruits and the occasional coffee. Lunch would be a chicken salad or grilled fish. I love sweets so I have a chocolate, sweet potato or banana chips for snacks. And when I go out for dinner, my choice would definitely be sushi!

Greenery, which Vannya launched with some business partners, is to be found in Jl. Senopati. It specialises in wholesome healthy bowls (that) pack a satisfying and nutritious punch with the inclusion of their home-made ingredients, such as peanuts and almond butter.

The restaurants website states: Whether its a 30-minute daily walk or a cutback on carbs, every small positive change that we adopt will contribute to the bodys overall well-being. For some, that change begins with the food they consume Greenery subscribes to the idea that everything can be made healthier. For example, why rely on an abundance of salt seasoning if spices and herbs can do a better task, minus the risk of damaging your health?

Vannya says she opened Greenery because we wanted to create something truly healthy for diners. In Indonesia, there is still the idea that if you eat less and are skinny, then you must be healthy. In fact, there is much more to health than that. The quality of the food we eat thats what really matters. Eating healthy is about getting the right nutrition to support your daily activities and overall well-being.
