Stories of the Heart: With healthy lifestyle, heart attack survivor never saw it coming – WYTV

"It's amazing that someone like me can have two heart attacks," said teacher Elizabeth Johnson

by: Lindsey Watson

(WYTV) On the first Friday of every February, the American Heart Association encourages everyone in the nation to wear red for Go Red for Women Day. The idea is to raise awareness for heart disease because the more a woman knows about it, the better chance she has of beating it.

One local woman embodies that message.

As a seventh-grade math teacher, Elizabeth Johnson knows you cant judge a book by its cover, let alone a person.

I just think its really important. When people look at me theyre like, Oh, shes a really healthy girl. It is amazing that someone like me can have two heart attacks, Johnson said.

Johnsons heart journey started almost four years ago. She had just finished lunch and was heading back into the classroom.

All of a sudden, I felt like I was coming down with the flu. I was sweating and felt nauseous. I ended up leaving the classroom and getting sick, coming back and I thought I could shake it off, she said.

But she couldnt.

So I finished teaching my 90-minute block and then I decided to drive myself to Urgent Care, she said.

In hindsight, Johnson said she doesnt recommend driving yourself to the hospital. But, she never thought in a million years she would have a heart attack.

I work out daily, eat healthy, I get my bloodwork done regularly. Im a healthy person. I did not think healthy people had heart attacks, she said.

Johnson was diagnosed with whats known as a SCAD (spontaneous coronary artery dissection) heart attack.

Basically, one of the arteries of my heart was tearing and then it ended up clotting which caused the heart attack, she said.

A year and a half later, she suffered a second one.

That was my bad one, I ended up in the ICU. From there, Ive basically damaged my heart so now Im in heart failure and I had an ICD implanted to keep me from going into cardiac arrest, Johnson said.

Johnson is on medication to help keep her heart rate low.

She also likes to show off her pacemaker.

As a mother of three, Johnson is also instilling heart-healthy lessons into her familys lives by making sure her kids eat healthy and exercise. They even do a nightly plank challenge before bed.

Just being aware of your body. Im so happy Ive always exercised, eaten healthy. My doctors have all said that that truly helped me save my life, she said.

On this national Go Red for Women Day, Johnson is using her story to help others and raise awareness.

If you can make a donation to the American Heart Association, the more money thats out there the more research thats done. This is a new type of heart attack so if we can get more money out there it could go for funding, Johnson said.

Heart disease and stroke claim the life of a woman every 80 seconds, causing 1 in 3 deaths among women each year more than all cancers combined. But, about 80% of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented.

Healthy Lifestyle Brand Virts Is A Promising Up Start In The Fitness World – Yahoo Finance

Virts Makes Pre and Post Workout Supplements While Fostering A New Trend In The Fitness Lifestyle

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Virts Nutrition set out to start a supplement revolution. Virts founder Corry Riggs started the company because he was disappointed with the quality of nutritional supplements available on the market. What started as an endeavor to create better nutrition has blossomed into a multidimensional lifestyle brand with a cultish following.

Riggs says that the Virts brand started with the intention of helping to support people in every step of their fitness journey. Two main staples of the Virts supplement arsonal are their ri-k-v-r (recovery) formula and their Kronos all-in-one pre workout powder.

Kronoshas been turning heads in the fitness industry for its inclusion of some premium ingredients in workout nutrition. Citrulline Malate, for example, is an amino acid that can aid in the prevention of muscle fatigue, and help improve circulation, building both endurance and strength. Taurine, another essential amino acid found in Virts' Kronos formula, is notorious for providing a powerful boost of energy, but it is also well known for its ability to help reduce damage to muscles caused by strain. Taurine has been linked to decreased recovery time in people who use it to help supplement a workout.

A key component of the successful nutrient combination in Kronos is how ingredients work together in harmony to get the most out of each component. Agmatine Sulfate, one such synergistic ingredient helps to break up nutrients in the body, increasing muscle glycogen, which breaks down stored energy in muscles to make room for greater muscle hydration. In addition to helping to minimize muscle damage, the added water to muscle groups helps to give them a bigger, fuller appearance.

Virts uses many patented ingredients in their formulas and puts heavy emphasis on the scientific backing of their ingredients. One such ingredient is Nitrosigine. Nitrosigine, says Virts, is backed by over nineteen studies showing its effectiveness in increasing blood flow during a workout, as well as aiding in concentration and focus. And studies have shown that Nitrosigine can significantly increase the body's nitric oxide levels, causing blood vessels to widen and the body to release certain types of human growth hormone.

Virts' science backed claims and emphasis on the community of their brand sets them above and beyond others in their field. While Virts has performed well in online sales, often selling out of their signature pre and post workout formulas, they are now looking forward to expanding into the larger United States market, and getting their products on shelves across the country. Look for Virts in stores as early as 2020, and learn more about them online at https://www.vsnlife.com/.

Rubber-Cal Floors The Biggest Loser in its Return to the USA Network – Business Wire

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Last month, hit reality show The Biggest Loser returned to television after a 4-year hiatus. Previously on NBC, the show now brings its 18th season to USA entertainment network with some major changes to the competitions structure. With the shows resurgence, they have once again teamed up with Rubber-Cal to floor the Biggest Loser gym, otherwise the setting for the trials and tribulations of the contestants. In late summer of 2019, the episodes were filmed just outside Santa Fe in Glorieta, New Mexico.

The Biggest Loser is one of the most popular and longest-running unscripted franchises in television history. The program has revamped itself to give contestants a 360-degree view of what it takes to make a serious, healthy lifestyle change. The new season will aim to improve contestants quality of life as well as their waistlines. Even though fitness is one component of a healthy revival, the shows focal point is the gym floor. Decked out with the latest cardio equipment, barbells, ropes and the customary black rubber floors, the gym becomes the backdrop to the emotional journey of the contestants. The Biggest Loser gym covers 15,000 square feet and contains all of the equipment needed for contestants to get into shape.

With the return of host Bob Harper, the show has brought in new trainers Steve Cook and Erica Lugo to guide contestants toward a healthier lifestyle from every level. Contestants now work with doctors, life coaches, and nutritionists to develop individualized routines and meal plans, which will be closely monitored for safety. The 30-week competition now also includes group therapy sessions and an improved after-care package for eliminated contestants, which provides them with a gym membership and nutritionist access after leaving the show.

Season 18 of The Biggest Loser airs on USA Network every Tuesday at 9/8 c. Tune in to see the new facility and watch contestants face-off for a grand prize of $100,000.

How to live longer: Eating this superfood could increase your life expectancy – Express

Leaps in scientific progress over the years have shown that the key to longevity is not achieved through superstitious means but by making healthy lifestyle decisions informed by evidence-based research. Among all the protective measures you can take, studies have shown that diet plays one of the biggest roles in determining how long you live. Health bodies suggest that to reap the optimal health benefits from your diet, it is important to focus on specific food groups as opposed to specific items.

That being said, research is increasingly singling out certain food items for their numerous health benefits, making a strong case for including them in your dietary plan.

According to Libby Limon, a nutritionist from LinkNutrition.com, one particularly beneficial superfood is mushrooms.

She explains: While their benefits have gone under the radar for some time, people are starting to wake up to the pronounced benefits they have to offer a persons immune system, energy levels, and cognition.

In fact, evidence hints at the cognitive benefits reaped from eating mushrooms.

READ MORE:Vitamin B12 deficiency: The dementia-related symptoms that may signal you lack the vitamin

According to Limon, many mushrooms, contain polysaccharides, carbohydrate molecules which support the immune system at the cellular level.

They also contain antioxidants which help regulate healthy inflammatory response systems, she says.

Supporting this claim, one study gave people two dried shiitake mushrooms daily.

After one month, their immune markers improved and their inflammation levels dropped.

Study researchers posit that this immune effect might be partly due to one of the polysaccharides in shiitake mushrooms.

Furthermore, a mouse study found that a supplement derived from shiitake helped reverse some age-related decline in immune function.

Mushrooms are also a staple of the Mediterranean diet, which has been shown to have a positive impact on heart health.

In fact, according to a study to be presented at the American College of Cardiology's 64th Annual Scientific Session, adults who closely followed the Mediterranean diet were 47 percent less likely to develop heart disease over a 10-year period compared to similar adults who did not closely follow the diet.

The study is based on data from a representative sample of more than 2,500 Greek adults, ages 18 to 89, who provided researchers with their health information each year from 2001 to 2012.

Participants also completed in-depth surveys about their medical records, lifestyle and dietary habits at the start of the study, after five years and after 10 years.

Among the study's participants, adherence to the Mediterranean diet was even more protective than physical activity.

The study, echoes previous evidence that posts to the health benefits of following a Mediterranean diet.

The simple hand test which can reveal how healthy your heart is and it only takes 30 seconds – The Sun

OUR heart is one of the most important organs in our whole body, so it's important we keep them in good working order.

But it can be difficult to tell whether our ticker is in good health without visiting a doctor.

1

So to help us out, Bright Side has revealed a simple trick which it claims can tell us how healthy our heart is - and it takes just 30 seconds.

To start you need to get a bowl or basin that is big enough to fit both of your hands.

Fill it up with cold water and consider adding some ice for even better results.

Next, submerge both your hands in the bowl of water for exactly 30 seconds.

This, they say, will help you know how your blood will respond when it comes into contact with the cold.

Now there are two possible results from this test, according to Bright Side.

The first is that your fingers have turned red - this is a good sign as it means you likely have no problems related to the oxygenation of your blood.

It also indicates that your heart and blood circulation are both healthy.

How to keep your heart healthy

The best way look after your heart is with a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some of the ways to be a bit healthier for the sake of your ticker...

Be smoke-free

Being smoke free is one of the best things you can do to protect your heart.

Manage your blood cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance carried in your blood.

Your body needs cholesterol to be healthy, but an imbalance of cholesterol in your blood can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Manage your blood pressure

Blood pressure isnt usually something you can feel.

If its too high, it needs to be treated.

Manage diabetes

Its important to manage your diabetes to help prevent a heart attack or stroke.

Be physically active

Regular, moderate physical activity is great for your heart health. Its never too late to start and get the benefits. Its also important to sit less during your day and break up your sitting time.

Achieve and maintain a healthy weight

Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of heart disease and other health problems. It can help to know your body mass index and waist measurements and what these mean.

Enjoy a variety of nutritious foods

Eating a varied diet of healthy foods can help with your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol.

There are also specific changes you can make to your diet to help prevent heart disease:

Source: Heart Foundation

But if your fingertips appear pale or turn a bluish colour, then it could indicate that you might have some blood circulation problems.

These symptoms can occur when your red blood cells have low oxygen levels.

If this does happen then you can warm your fingers or massage them to increase blood circulation to help them return to normal.

Of course at this point you should also make an appointment to see a GP for further tests.

The benefits of the flu vaccine | Health – Williston Daily Herald

A healthy lifestyle includes many different components. Diet and exercise are arguably the two most significant elements of a healthy lifestyle, but being healthy and avoiding illness involves more than just eating right and getting off the couch.

Preventive care can be critical to long-term health. A healthy diet and routine exercise can help lower risk for various ailments, including heart disease and diabetes. But what about preventing more routine conditions, including the flu? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the flu vaccine prevents millions of illnesses and flu-related doctor visits every year. Despite the effectiveness of the flu vaccine, some people still dont get one each year. But a look at some of the many benefits of being vaccinated against the flu might compel such men and women to change their minds and get their flu shots this year.

The flu shot keeps you from getting the flu. While its common sense to note that the flu keeps people from getting the flu, just how effective the flu vaccination can be might open the eyes of even the most ardent flu shot proponents. According to the CDC, in seasons when the flu vaccine viruses matched circulating strains, the vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of having to go to the doctor by as much as 60 percent.

The flu shot can save you money and vacation time. The CDC estimated that 48.8 million people got sick with the flu during the 2017-18 flu season. In addition, the CDC estimates that the flu caused workers to miss approximately 17 million workdays and led to more than 950,000 hospitalizations. The cost of a hospital stay is often considerable, and workers who value their vacation and personal time will almost certainly lament having to use some of that time at home nursing the flu. By getting the flu shot, anyone can greatly reduce their risk of spending their time and hard-earned money recovering from the flu.

Success! An email has been sent to with a link to confirm list signup.

Error! There was an error processing your request.

The flu shot can help prevent serious medical events. A 2013 meta-analysis of various studies that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the influenza vaccine was associated with a lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events among people with heart disease. In addition, the CDC notes that previous studies have found that the flu vaccination has been associated with reduced hospitalizations among people with diabetes and chronic lung disease.

The flu shot can protect children. Humans immune systems mature as they grow, and the flu vaccine can be an invaluable ally to children as their immune systems are still evolving.

The flu is a formidable foe. But an annual flu shot can bolster everyones chances of beating or even avoiding the flu.

St. Rita’s health focus: Sleep tips to get your kids ready for a successful school year – Lima Ohio

Sometime back in July most parents were given a list of school supplies for the upcoming year. Specific descriptions of just the right paper, pencils, crayons and calculators were provided to get them ready to start a new school year. However, on that list they did not find one of the most essential supplies students of all ages need. They were not given the key to unlocking a vital component in the success of their childs school year. That being the key to preparing their child for a good nights sleep following a long summer of sleeping in and staying up late.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) offers a list of recommendations to assure a child gets the healthy sleep they need to learn, function and grow. The week or two before classes return is a good time to start getting your child back on track with their sleep.

Many schools in the area start early in the morning and that makes healthy sleep for a child a challenge. Dont wait until school starts to prepare for the change in bed time, the AASM recommends a gradual transition in the upcoming weeks. A sudden change could make it difficult for him or her to fall asleep. Instead, slowly start making the bedtime earlier; pushing it forward by 5 to 15 minutes each day and waking the child up earlier using the same incremental times. Kids aged seven to twelve need 10 to 11 hours of sleep, while older kids need 8 to 9 hours. Once a sleep schedule is determined, stick to it, dont use the weekend to catch up on sleep.

Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. Start quiet time 1 hour to 1.5 hours prior to bedtime to allow your child to unwind. Include activities like a bath, brushing teeth, bedtime stories for young children or reading time for older children. This is the time to limit television, video games, and other electronic distractions, especially in bed. The bright light emitted by the devices can signal to the body that it should be awake and alert.

In addition to removing nighttime technology from the bedroom, avoid food and drinks with caffeine. A good rule of thumb is to limit pop and caffeinated drinks after 3 p.m. These drinks in the evening can interrupt your childs natural sleep pattern, making it difficult to fall asleep. A heavy meal prior to bed can also make it difficult for your child to fall asleep.

Provide for your child a peaceful bedroom environment. Keep the room dark and a room temperature that is neither too hot nor too cold. Electronic distractions like televisions, computers, or video games should be removed from your childs room and set up in a different location.

Helping children realize that sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle is important for their future, as poor sleep can increase the risk of physical health problems throughout their life. These include obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Be a role model, set a good example for your child. Establish your own regular sleep routine.

If a consistent sleep schedule and good sleep hygiene do not appear to help your child achieve healthy sleep, your child may be suffering from a chronic sleep problem. Talk to your childs doctor or see a sleep medicine physician who has specialized training and expertise to diagnosis and treat all forms of sleep illness.

The sooner your child readjusts to a school-time sleep-schedule, the better he or she will feel in the classroom putting to use their new school supplies.

Is Ronnie Ortiz-Magro the Most Troubled ‘Jersey Shore’ Star? – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The cast members of the decade-defining TV show Jersey Shore all skyrocketed to fame years ago when their show first debuted on MTV.

In the time since, all of the original cast members have gone on to create their own separate identities, separate from the show that earned them so much success.

While some of the cast has achieved unlikely peace (Snooki, anyone?) others have struggled to maintain a sense of normalcy. Ronnie Ortiz-Magro is one of the Jersey Shore stars who has a notoriously difficult private life and even these days, is in the headlines more than ever before.

Born in 1985, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro did not grow up in the entertainment industry. In fact, he worked for his father in his real estate business long before turning his attention to life in reality TV.

In the summer of 2009, Ortiz-Magro was one of the original cast members recruited for Jersey Shore. The show premiered in December 2009 and became a runaway hit.

While Ortiz-Magro, along with the other stars of the show, undoubtedly became stereotypes in popular culture, people couldnt deny how popular the TB show was. Jersey Shore ran for six seasons, finally wrapping up in 2012.

Ortiz-Magro remained a fixture on television, and since the show ended, he has appeared on other reality shows like Famously Single and Celebrity Fear Factor. Ultimately, Ortiz-Magro reunited with his Jersey Shore castmates in 2018 when they all came back together in order to film Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, a follow-up to the original series.

In spite of Ortiz-Magros success, he has had anything but a smooth ride to the top.

For years, Ortiz-Magro dated another member of the Jersey Shore cast, Sammi Sweetheart Giancola. They started dating in 2009, the same year that the show premiered, and stayed together until 2014. Several years after his relationship with Giancola wrapped up, he started dating Jen Harley. The couple reportedly had only dated for a couple of months before finding out that they were pregnant.

Although the star seemed over the moon at announcing that he was going to be a father, things wouldnt stay peaceful between the pair for very long.

In April 2018, the couple welcomed a daughter, whom they named Ariana Sky. However, only weeks after their daughter was born, Ortiz-Magro and Harley split up, amongst rumors that Ortiz-Magro had cheated on Harley when she was still pregnant.

They began to fight on social media, going back and forth via Instagram for everyone to see. The fighting reached new heights when they apparently got into a physical altercation via an Instagram live stream.

Although they would reunite and break up several more times over the months that followed, these days, there seems to be no chance of a peaceful reunion for Ortiz-Magro and Harley.

In January 2019, Ortiz-Magro decided to deal with his demons head-on and entered rehab for both depression and alcohol abuse. Upon completing his stint in rehab, Ortiz-Magro recommitted himself to co-parenting his daughter and trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

In early October 2019, the reality star was arrested after a physical altercation with Harley. He faces multiple charges, including domestic violence, child endangerment, and resisting arrest.

Ortiz-Magro faces up to one year in jail for each of his five charges. While no one is yet sure exactly how things will play out for Ortiz-Magro in court, its not looking good for the troubled star.

Stay tuned to Showbiz Cheat Sheet for all the latest news on Ronnie Ortiz-Magro.

SINGAPORE - From measures to prevent diabetes such as giving Singaporeans healthier food options, to helping patients manage the condition before it worsens - the authorities have been amping up efforts since 2016,when the war on diabetes was launched.

From 2016 to 2018, the proportion of Healthier Choice Symbol products in the market, across 100 food categories, increased by 7.4 percentage points, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Sunday (Nov 17) in an update on its efforts.

As of 2018, one in two stalls in hawker centres and coffee shops have at least one healthier option on their menu, as part of the Healthier Dining Programme.

People with diabetes are also getting greater support to help them manage their condition.

For instance, a beta set of reference materials for newly diagnosed patients to help them make changes to their lifestyle is available on HealthHub, an e-services portal and mobile app where Singaporeans can access their health records and other resources. A full set of materials will be available by the end of this year.

Programmes to address common complications associated with diabetes, such as eye problems, kidney failure and limb amputations, have also been rolled out.

They include the Singapore Integrated Diabetic Retinopathy Programme, which started in 2012. It is a centralised screening programme at all polyclinics to detect eye complications in patients with diabetes. The annual number of eye screenings performed as part of this programme has increased from about 14,000 in 2012 to 92,000 last year.

Senior Minister of State for Law and Health Edwin Tong shared a summary report of the efforts made in the war on diabetes launched in 2016.

Speaking at an event on Sunday to commemorate World Diabetes Day, Mr Tong said: "Diabetes is a serious health concern globally and in Singapore." One in three Singaporeans is at risk of developing diabetes in their lifetime, he added.

He touched on three broad issues in tackling the disease - empowering patients, equipping healthcare professionals and the community well, and helping people maintain healthy lifestyle choices.

In the area of patient empowerment, Mr Tong cited a pilot programme by the National University Health System (NUHS) to motivate individuals to take control of their condition and make their own lifestyle changes.

But on top of that, healthcare professionals and volunteers "need access to more training and resources to improve their delivery of care", he said.

To strengthen community support, Mr Tong noted that there are initiatives to better equip volunteers, such as through the Health Peers Programme by Changi General Hospital and NUHS, where layperson volunteers called Health Peers are trained by professionals to deal with people with diabetes.

The third area in the fight against diabetes is to create an environment that helps people to initiate and sustain positive lifestyle changes, such as ramping up healthier choice options, Mr Tong said.

He added: "While the government, the healthcare family and the community will continue to provide support and nudge Singaporeans towards healthier habits, one's health is ultimately a personal responsibility and it requires the individual to initiate and sustain positive behaviours."

According to the latest available National Population Health Survey, 8.6 per cent of Singapore residents had diabetes in 2017. MOH has said the latest statistics are not ready to be published.

The event on Sunday was organised by Diabetes Singapore and NUHS to raise public awareness of diabetes. There were public health screenings as well as a symposium for general practitioners.
