Discover The Latest Frontier in Anti-aging Medicine and 3 Regenerative Therapies You Should Know… – YourObserver.com

Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell technologies... All Hype? Or The Future of Anti-Aging?

We have entered into the rapidly evolving age of Regenerative Medicine, using breakthroughs in cell to cell communication to reset your body's natural ability to heal and repair itself. Advances in Stem Cell technology race forward at an ever increasing rate as people just like you are demanding non-surgical alternatives to the multiple degenerative conditions of aging and inflammation.

If you are asking What is a Stem Cell?

Think of them as simply the master cells of rebuilding the body. They are the building blocks of our genetic code and cellular programming that coordinate healing through bio-signaling to restore our innate capacity of repair & regeneration.

Regenerative Medicine is the vanguard of 21st century health According to Journal: American College of Cardiology

Regenerative Aesthetics is a new field of regenerative medicine that aims to restore and renew the body at the cellular level, dramatically reversing the sands of time and maintaining an aesthetically desirable youthful appearance.

What we really now know is that men and women all over the world want their hair back, they want their sexual organs to work and they want to look and feel their best into their later years.

This brings us to the 3 Regenerative Therapies you should know about.

The first and most widely known of these regenerative therapies is Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP which utilizes your own Blood Plasma and Platelets in a concentrated form to activate the healing cascade. Recruiting your own innate Stem Cells for accelerated wound healing and tissue regeneration.

Known as Liquid Gold, your platelets and plasma have been shown to rejuvenate the

Unfortunately, we are finding clinically that not all PRP is created equally. In fact, some people have a very low concentration of these regenerative growth factors or a high amount of inflammatory cytokines resulting in inconsistencies from person to person, session to session. As PRP continues to get more popular in the mainstream, we find it important to share some of the newer, more optimal Regenerative Technologies that have been emerging.

Which leads us to... The second regenerative therapy you should know about.

Stem Cell Growth factors & Cytokines. Sourced from Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC's) however, they do not contain any actual stem cells or DNA. Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins in your body that regulate cellular growth, healing, proliferation and differentiation under controlled conditions and play a role in cellular communication. They are master bio-signals acting as command and control over your body's natural healing processes and modulation of inflammation.

It has been shown that cells in aging skin generate less growth factors than cells in youthful skin. For example, by the time you are 50, on average 4% of these regenerative bone marrow MSCs are in circulation compared to what you had when you were in your teens. Hence, we age because we damage faster than we repair in our later years.

By simply adding concentrated MSC Growth factors & Cytokines to our Regenerative Therapies we can consistently improve hair loss, skin rejuvenation, collagen growth, sexual organ function, and more. We know for a fact that daily use of skin care products containing stable growth factors and cytokines help reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles and improve skin tone & texture.

Lastly, and most importantly is the latest frontier and the 3rd regenerative therapy you should know about.

The Future of Regenerative Medicine... Known as Stem Cell Exosomes. Science is showing us that the optimal way to provide true stem cell therapy is to directly provide the cell bio-signals in high concentrations. After all, the signaling is what we really require to regenerate a normal healthy physiology.

Exosomes are regarded as the purest form of cellular therapy available today, providing a safe and anti-inflammatory environment for healing and repairing.

The AABB recently reported that up to one in three people in the U.S. could benefit from regenerative medicine.

At Rejuvenate 528 Regenerative Aesthetics Medical Spa, we can include exosomes for enhanced wellness to the majority of our Regenerative Aesthetic Services. This can benefit your overall health and vitality as this is reversing challenges of Inflammation!

Aesthetics Biomedical Announces Key Scientific Findings For Its Proprietary Personalized Skincare Product SoME Skincare That’s All You – PR Web

SoME Skincare That's All You | SoME Skincare

PHOENIX (PRWEB) December 02, 2019

Aesthetics Biomedical, a company committed to the development and distribution of innovative aesthetic devices, products, and services for the global market, announce scientific findings for its proprietary SoME Skincare product. SoME is the first of its kind topical product that provides the vehicle for a personalized autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) skincare product for home use. The field of personalized aesthetics and the use of PRP to effectively achieve aesthetic outcomes is expanding daily, providing new opportunities to advance the science. Contributing to this knowledge base, the results from ABMs controlled, blinded, eight-week study was recently published in the (J Cosmetic Dermatology Vol 18,Issue 5, 2019; Dermatology Times Vol 40, Issue 9,2019 ). The data indicated that the proprietary SoME cosmetic base, when combined with autologous PRP, could demonstrate identifiable clinical improvement for signs of facial aging at four weeks, with enhanced performance observed at eight weeks (e.g., luminosity, radiance, smoothness, reduction in redness and skin lightening) vs the control base alone. Biopsies revealed enhanced collagen and elastin expression, including up-regulation of type 1 collagen gene observed with the SoME + PRP vs the SoME alone.

The proprietary cosmetic base is formulated to preserve viable platelet function for 90 days. As a point of care product, the patient visits their physician office, has blood drawn that is centrifuged to obtain PRP. The PRP is then added to three 1oz bottles of the SoME cosmetic base providing for three months, twice a day home use. The patient receives a mini-cosmetic refrigerator to conveniently store the product. The removal of the product from the refrigerator and applied to the skin provides a temperature differential that activates the platelets with the ensuing release of growth factors and other biomolecules. An additional 120-day study is underway to further verify the clinical and biochemical findings, and to validate that continued use leads to further enhanced cosmetic improvement. The product is well tolerated by all skin types; the preservative system is effective against bacteria, yeast, and viruses, including HIV. Other aesthetic treatments can be performed and used concurrently with SoME.

We entered into this PRP treatment arena, realizing that there was a paucity of controlled studies generating important data involving PRP, not only for topical use but for aesthetic use in general. ABM is very focused on conducting critical science that supports both our topical products and aesthetic devices. Having the first point of care, autologous skincare product for home use has been exciting for the company, and we are thrilled that our scientific findings are contributing to the new field of knowledge for regenerative aesthetic medicine, says MaryAnn Guerra, ABMs, President/CEO.

Lawrence Rheins Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer and one of the authors on the publication, stated, our ongoing studies continually provide critical evidence on the growing role of the platelet in aesthetic medicine and other skin indications. An additional focus for 2020 will be to evaluate the role of SoME as a simplified anti-aging treatment approach to reduce the current practice of using multiple skincare product regimens and the value of using the bodys own platelet-rich biomolecules, as the key source to provide a comprehensive regenerative aesthetic appearance.

About Aesthetics Biomedical: Aesthetics Biomedical is committed to the development and distribution of innovative aesthetic devices, products, and services for the global market. ABM creates novel patient treatment experiences that ensure our products yield desired results, keeping patient comfort in mind. Aesthetics Biomedical's SoME products are intended to meet the FDA's definition of a cosmetic; an article applied to the human body to cleanse, beautify, promote attractiveness, and alter appearances. ABM products do not contain platelet rich plasma and are not intended to be drug or biologic products that diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition. These products have not been approved by the FDA, and the statements on these products have not been evaluated by the FDA.

7 Bad Habits That Are Even Worse in the Age of Coronavirus – Best Life

Everyone's got a few bad habits they'd rather not share with the worldwhether it's not flossing as frequently as you should, or easing your nerves by biting your fingernails. However, in the age of coronavirus, many behaviors that may have once seemed relatively innocuous could now pose an even more serious risk to your health. So, if you want to protect your well-beingand ensure the safety of those around youthese are the bad habits you need to kick during the coronavirus outbreak, according to medical experts.

There's never been a better time to invest in a bottle of no-bite nail polish.

"The space under the tips of your nails is a cozy place for all sorts of germs," explains dental surgeon Mike Golpa, chief executive officer of G4 by Golpa. "Putting unwashed hands straight into your mouth is a highway for bacteria."

Sure, you can't run out to Sephora or the spa when your skin is looking worse for wear these days, but that doesn't mean you should take matters into your own hands.

Anti-aging and functional medicine physician, Yeral Patel, MD, cautions against picking at your skin during the pandemic, noting that doing so could put your health in jeopardy. "Touching surfaces with the virus and then touching your face allows for easy access into the body via the mouth, eyes, or nose," she says.

The hairdresser tasked with taming those broken strands and split ends isn't the only person who wishes you'd stop idly twirling your hair around your fingers.

"Hair, if it has touched a dirty surfaceespecially long haircan then transmit the virus to the mouth, nose, or eyes via hand transmission," explains Patel.

Since the virus can live on some surfaces for up to a few days, it's important to increase the regularity with which you wash anything that comes into direct contact with your bodyand that's especially true when it comes to your bedsheets.

"People who do laundry every 1-2 weeks for sheets and towels should try to wash at least 2-3 times a week," Patel says.

Your toothbrush may be getting those pearly whites clean, but if you're not careful, it could be making you sick, too.

"Toothbrushes may have saliva or blood on them and have been shown to transmit viruses," says Henry Hackney, DMD, director of content at Authority Dental, who notes that the virus can live on certain surfaces for up to three days. To protect yourself, he recommends storing your toothbrush upright instead of flat against a sink or countertop, and keeping it at least a few inches from those belonging to your family members or roommates.

As tempting as it may be to get that piece of spinach out of your teeth immediately, your health may benefit from your decision to wait.

"You may have a virus and other germs on your hands," says Hackney, who recommends waiting to attend to those dental issues at home after washing your handsand preferably with floss or a toothbrush, not your fingers.

Save those romantic meals for when the pandemic has subsided, as the virus can be easily transmitted from dishes and eating utensils.

"Don't share food, drinks, eating utensils, drinking containers, dishes, glasses, cups, cutlery, [or] straws," advises Hackney.

April is Rosacea Awareness Month! . Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition in which there is inflammation of the mid face. Rosacea can appear as a combination of persistent redness, skin thickening, flushing, bumps, prominent blood vessels and/or eye irritation. . For many patients, these symptoms may be constant, while others are able to associate a trigger such as: changes in weather, sun exposure, hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, emotional stress, or exercise. . The reason why there is an entire month dedicated to this is because approximately 16 million Americans suffer from rosacea and most don't know it! Public education on the condition (like this post!) may help someone seek medical attention before it worsens. . For me personally, as a dermatologist, it is important to provide accurate education on this topic so that I can do my part in promoting greater social acceptance and understanding of rosacea. . General tips for patients with rosacea are to keep a diary to better understand possible triggering factors, always wear sunscreen and to consider gentle skincare and makeup products. . While there is not a "cure" for rosacea, there are MANY treatment options that a dermatologist can prescribe depending on your specific type and symptoms including topical and oral medications as well as laser therapy. . Below are some over the counter products that I love for rosacea-prone skin. There are so many to choose from so this list is not exhaustive! These should not be used as a substitute for seeking medical advice! Finding a dermatologist to help you treat your rosacea in a multimodal approach is so incredibly important! . @vanicreamofficial free & clear liquid cleanser @drjart cicapair tiger grass cream @deciem azelaic acid suspension @larocheposayusa toleriane double repair face moisturizer and Rosaliac AR Intense Visible Redness Reducing Serum @smashboxcosmetics Photo Finish Reduce Rendess Primer @dermablendpro quick-fix color correcting concealer and flawless creator lightweight foundation . Reinvent your body and soul with these new wellness trends – Daily Sabah

The term "wellness holiday" might make you think of saunas and massages. But there's so much more to consider if you're booking a getaway to really get away. Here are seven wellness holiday trends from around the world:

It's not just about salon time

There was a time when holidaymakers took a break by going to a hotel cellar to get a quick rubdown with essential oils. Maybe there was a sauna and a beauty salon somewhere. That has changed radically.

Today, many hotels offer lush bathing landscapes and large spas to serve very different needs. "The hoteliers are preparing themselves for additional requests," says journalist Christian Werner of the RELAX Guide in Vienna, such as wellness with children, only for adults or serving organic cuisine.

Wellness is a complete lifestyle

Lutz Hertel of the German Wellness Association sees a strong need for real wellness instead of short, everyday escapes. Exotic treatments such as Lomi Lomi Nui, a form of massage from Hawaii, are losing market share. There is a stronger demand for yoga, which can be incorporated into the daily routine at any holiday resort.

Claudia Wagner of travel agency Fit Reisen also sees a need for holistic self-optimization. Her guests want deeply effective, individual breaks for stress management, weight loss, detox or anti-aging treatments.

Everything goes back to nature

Hiking, forest bathing, yoga, tai chi and bouldering: The experts see a turn toward nature. Forests and meadows become the backdrops for sport, meditation or even open-air massages. And the boundaries between wellness and sport are blurred.

Werner says the demand for the good old fitness room with treadmills and weights is declining. If you want to keep people coming to the hotel gym, it's got to have the latest generation of machines.

Bring nature to the spa

"Old Roman columns and artificial palms in bathing landscapes are a thing of the past," Hertel says. Especially in Bavaria, Austria and South Tyrol, the spa areas inside are often enlivened with moss, plants and small trees, and built with a view and entrance into the countryside. Prized outside appearances include wood and stone if possible from the region as well as features such as hot springs, natural swimming ponds and forest proximity.

Find remedies from the region

Regional treatments to strengthen the powers of self-healing also follow the natural trend. In the Ulten Valley in South Tyrol, the lanolin in the cozy sheep's wool bath allows you to benefit from the natural Alpine herbs that the sheep have eaten. In Halkidiki in Greece, rituals with olive oil, salt, medicinal herbs, yogurt and honey are based on ancient Greek healing methods. In Northern Ireland, an ancient bathing tradition with algae has been revived under the name Sea Haven Therapy.

The classic health resorts are increasingly taking part, vying for ever-more-demanding wellness customers with traditional local remedies. In the Limes-Therme Bad Goegging, for example, guests sweat in the moor mud bath or indulge in a hop bath, which includes a beer.

Caress the soul

Mental support assists the body in healing: Modern forms of traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda use this approach, which has become more important for wellness. "We recognize more and more that our mental condition contributes significantly to the self-healing of the body," Wagner says.

Always take it nice and slow

In yoga, the trend is toward calm yin yoga, where you take your time settling into deep stretches instead of getting your heart rate up with a powerful series of sun salutes. When it comes to fitness, "slow jogging" promises healthy, weight-reducing pleasure running.

Hertel sees the new jogging trend as the expression of a new philosophy that strives for a better work-life balance. "It is about a less rushed, more conscious and more enjoyable life," comparable to the slow food movement.

Living with COVID-19 – The Phuket News

There is nowhere you can go in Phuket without the COVID-19 coronavirus determining every aspect of your life, other than staying at home hoping not to become infected. Here is a reality check on what COVID-19 means in Phuket.

Dr Thomas Lodi is a wellness expert who has been practicing medicine for over 30 years. He now heads The LifeCo wellness centre located between Nai Thon and Nai Yang beaches, just south of Phuket International Airport.

For the first 10 years of his medical career, Dr Lodi worked in conventional settings as an internal medicine specialist, urgent care physician and as an intensivist in ICU and CCU departments of various hospitals throughout the US.

Subsequently, Dr Lodi continued his search for more effective and less toxic therapies by training with alternative health experts in Japan, Europe, Mexico and the US. He is licensed as a Homeopathic Medical Doctor MD (H) in Arizona and as an Allopathic Medical Doctor in the State of New York.

In 2018, Dr Lodi was featured in the acclaimed docu-series The Truth about Cancer and recently hosted seminars at the H.E.A.T Anti-Aging conference in Bangkok. He is the Founder and Medical Director of Integrative Oncology and Internal Medicine at An Oasis of Healing Center in Arizona. He is also the Founder and Chief Medical Consultant for the Institute of Integrative Oncology, Singapore and Director of Integrative Oncology and Integrative Medicine at The Lifeco Wellness Center, Phuket.

Here we ask Dr Lodi the simple, but most pressing, questions about living with the threat of COVID-19 in Phuket.

What are the real dangers of COVID-19, the best we know right now?

Respiratory failure and cytokine storm (excessive immune responses that damage lungs). The two cell types to which this virus attaches are mucus cells and cilia cells in the lungs. These cells together keep the lungs clean mucus is secreted to trap particulate matter and the cilia beat rhythmically outward towards the mouth like a conveyor belt. With these cells non-functional, the lungs will accumulate everything from microorganisms, waste products, toxins from the environment and so on. Also, the immune system gets turned on full blast and causes system wide inflammation.

Who is primarily at risk?

The elderly over 65 and those with chronic illnesses and compromised immune systems.

What are the symptoms and how bad are they for most people?

The symptoms are a dry cough, shortness of breath, aches and pains, weakness, no appetite and, of course, fever.

Most people will not know they have it: 81% of cases symptoms are mild (lungs); 14% become severely ill; 4.7% become critically ill; and the fatality rate is 3.4 %. Of course these figures may change as we learn more about the virus.

How is COVID-19 contracted?

Fifty percent of infections are hand to face (mouth, nose, eyes). Also, the virus can be airborne in droplets from sneezing and coughing.

Phuket seems to be the only place where people who come into frequent contact with strangers are the only ones wearing face masks. Everyday people going about their daily lives do not. Should people wear face masks? Who should? Why?

If you are not sick or around people, there is no need to wear a mask. Here are the WHO recommendations:

If you are being self-isolated due to one of the following circumstances:

You have travelled from high risk areas within the past 14 days; or

You have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus;

then, you should use a surgical mask in the following circumstances:

You need to leave your home for any reason and be in public areas;

You are visiting a medical facility; or

You have symptoms and other people are present in the same room as you.

N95 masks filter out about 95% of all liquid or airborne particles.

People have expressed sincere concern about the fingerprint-scanning device at Immigration at the airport. Should people be concerned about this? What should people do about this, if anything?

They have hand sanitiser bottles next to the fingerprinting device. Use it twice: once before and once after.

People have also expressed their opinion that the normal everyday temperature in Phuket and elsewhere in Thailand has helped to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country. One senior health official has even said he expects COVID-19 to disappear as Thailand enters its annual hot season. Is there any merit in this understanding?

Not enough is known about this variant of coronavirus because it is new. The standard coronavirus that causes upper respiratory illnesses remains intact in cold weather and dies quickly at 58C.

Are the precautions the Thai government is taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19 reasonable? Or is it lacking? Or even an overreaction? Or a bit of both? Any there any examples that highlight your opinion on this?

The Thai government will do what all governments are doing Each government has had an initial different response, but now that the pandemic is without doubt, all governments will be requiring the same regarding social distancing and quarantines.

Now that COVID-19 has already reached around the world, do you believe travel bans should still be in place? Should people still travel?

Traveling makes no sense now since most countries are locked down, and it is safer not to travel at this point to keep the virus contained.

What can people do to help protect themselves against being infected with COVID-19?

Viruses are not really alive so they cannot be killed. Ultimately, it is our immune systems that develop an adaptive response to recognise any cell infected with the virus and eliminate it. Everything we that we need to do to avoid becoming ill must be geared towards strengthening our immunesystems.

Sleep early and at least seven hours.

Eat no more than two healthy meals per day with 18 hours between your last and first meals. During the window of time when the body is not digesting food, it has time to focus much more energy to the immune system.

Eat plant-based, whole foods rather than processed foods.

Eat at least 70% of your food uncooked and organic.

Meditate at least twice per day.

Vitamin C not only can treat active infection but can protect from getting infected. Vitamin C actually prevents viruses from entering cells. Take from eight to 15 grammes per day orally, depending on bowel tolerance, body size and stress levels

Vitamin A: 30,000-50,000 units per day with food until vitamin A levels in the blood are over 300 iu/dL

Vitamin D: 30,000 iu/day to keep levels in blood above 70, which contributes to enhancing immune response.

Zinc: 90mg per day

Selenium: 400ug per day.

Magnesium: 1,000mg per day. Best used as a transdermal spray applied directly to the body

Green tea: drink several cups of fresh-brewed green tea per day.

Keep your bowels clean with probiotic enemas and colon hydrotherapy and healthy food. Up to 60% of the immune system exists in the gut.

What else should people know about COVID-19 that has not been given enough attention in the media?

If it is not covered in the media, we probably should not discuss it.

In summary, how should people go about their daily lives now that COVID-19 has spread around the world and is now part of our daily lives?

For now, hang out with friends and family and avoid crowds and follow the rules above. Most will not get sick from this virus but you do not want to be the one who spreads it to someone who does not have the health you have and may become critically ill or die.

Dr Lodi and the team at The LifeCo Wellness Center located near Phuket International Airport have created basic and comprehensive immune boosting packages which are certainly appreciated at this time. Learn more at http://www.thelifeco.com/en/viral-infection-prevention-program/

Market Definition:Global Antiaging Products and Services Market

As the skin ages, it loses its natural elasticity and becomes thinner, more fragile and laxer, taking on a wrinkled appearance. In modern society, there is a great increase in the search for eternal youth and an insatiable appetite for methods which could turn back the clock. This has triggered an explosion in the antiaging industry. In addition, technological advances in medicine for the prevention and treatment of deadly diseases help to increase life expectancy.

The aging process of the skin generally has two kinds of forms: natural aging and light aging. There are various factors which directly affect intrinsic aging such as ethnicity, anatomic variations, hormonal changes, extrinsic aging, drugs, smoking and sunlight exposure. These aging conditions can be treated by the antiaging products such as UV absorbers, anti-wrinkle products, anti-stretch products, others and services and therapies. For anti-aging, the cosmetics are commercially available products that can be used to improve the appearance of the skin. People are constantly demanding for more effective products that can essentially beautify the appearance and has resulted in augmented basic science research and product development in the cosmetics industry.

According to news provided by Stempeutics Research Pvt. Ltd., in July 2015, Cipla (India) launched a new anti-aging product which uses human bio-active factors. The product was launched with a brand name Cutisera, developed by Stempeutics. This product will be used for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, lightening dark spots, evening skin tone, improving skin firmness and improving skin hydration.

Skin Care Benefits From Honey- Based Products – StyleNest

Honey is a natural sweetener and taste enhancer. Depending on the source of the nectar, Honeys composition can vary in texture as well as taste. Today, over 300 varieties of Honey are available in the market. Still, Honey, an all-rounder of natures best remedies, is also known for its medicinal properties. For illustration, Honey has been used in medicine since Ancient Egypt, mostly due to its wound-healing properties and antibacterial action. However, its antimicrobial features are also regularly used in the beauty industry. When applied to your skin, Honey creates an invisible shield to fight all the acne-causing bacteria, damage, and environmental factors. This magical substance can tackle many skin issues, and even if you do not have any major ones, you would still feel the bliss while using honey-based beauty products due to its calming and moisturising superpower. With all this in mind, let us see what wonders can Honey do for your skin.

Honey and Honey Bee By-products Used for Skincare

Raw Honey is what is most commonly used in the production of beauty products. This type of Honey comes straight from the honeycomb. It is neither heated or filtered. Raw Honey is removed from the hive and directly bottled, so it contains small amounts of yeast, wax, and pollen. It appears cloudy or opaque precisely because it includes these extra elements. Raw Honey is also a natural exfoliator, which means that it can take off dry, dead skin and reveal new skin cells when applied on your face.

However, it is not just Honey that boosts your skin health. Propolis, another honey bee by-product, has many appealing qualities. Science has found that propolis, made from the chewed buds of some trees and conifers mixed with bees saliva, is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. This vital substance protects bees against diseases. It has the power to help in balancing, healing, and soothing problematic skin. It also stimulates the rate of cell growth and decongests pores. Propolis also protects against bacteria and works as a great anti-inflammatory agent. It gives the skin smoother, softer texture, and a calmed complexion.

Bee wax is a natural secretion from wax glands on the sides of the body of honey bees. Its primary use is as a building block for the bees honeycomb cells in which they raise the young, and store Honey and pollen. This honey bee by-product, heals and softens skin, and is a vital antibacterial agent. It can help fight conditions like acne, dry skin, eczema, and stretch marks. Raw beeswax is mainly used in the production of skin care moisturisers and lotions.

Royal jelly is the queen bees great source of food. It is rich with a high concentration of vitamins B5, B6, and amino acids. Many people believe it is a potent antioxidant and a unique rejuvenating substance that promotes tissue growth, muscle, and cell regeneration. Royal jellys skin benefits include moisturising, reducing redness, adding collagen to the face to help combat anti-aging, healing acne, and scars, and getting rid of oiliness in the face.

Honeys Skincare Benefits

Due to its extraordinary attributes, modern medical science uses Honey in chronic wound management and combating infection. Nevertheless, Honey is also used in traditional and alternative medicine for treatment for a variety of clinical conditions. In the beauty sector, Honey is used as a skin moisturiser, a humectant, an antibacterial, and a flavouring ingredient. It is mostly used due to its four main skin-saving benefits:

#1 Complexion boost Honey is extremely moisturising and soothing, so it helps create a glow. Honey can nourish, hydrate, and moisturise all skin types. The enzymes present in Honey enable it to flow into your skin while conditioning it and softening it from deep within quickly. Moreover, since Honey is a natural humectant, it can draw moisture from the air into your skin, keeping it fresh, hydrated, and healthy all day long.

#2 Acne treatment Honey is naturally antibacterial, so it is excellent for acne treatment and prevention. However, the Honey used in the beauty product of choice must contain healthy bacteria. The reason for this is that these bacteria can activate your immune system and help with inflammation, redness, and heal blemishes. Additionally, because Honey keeps the skin well-hydrated and balanced, it can also help control the production of oil in your skin, which further prevents the formation of acne.

#3 Anti-Aging Honey is full of antioxidants, so it is the perfect ingredient for slowing down aging. These natural antioxidants help control the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Honey can significantly improve your skins elasticity, making it look youthful and glowing.

#4 Anti-Inflammatory Alongside Honeys Honeys antimicrobial properties, it offers up a substantial serving of antioxidants that accelerate the healing of the skin. For this reason, many suffering from sensitivity or skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea see particular improvements when using Honey or honey-based skincare products. Manuka honey, in particular, boosts skins natural immunity by strengthening the skin barrier.

Popular Honey Beauty Products

Thanks to its remarkable, antibacterial, and youth-boosting properties, Honey is used in the formulation of a wide range of beauty and personal care products. Namely, Honey is often used in hand care creams since it softens, moisturises, and protects dry hands, especially in winter. Due to its humectant powers, which means it draws moisture to the skin and keeps it hydrated, Honey is the ideal ingredient for bath products and after bath lotions. And, precisely because of these humectant abilities, combined with its antioxidant properties, Honey is also a popular ingredient in the production of eye and facial make up cosmetics. It is also extensively used in the production of removing makeup lotions since it can help unclog pores while concurrently delivering moisture to dry skin.

Final Thoughts

Honey is the beauty industrys secret ingredient in the production of many skincare products, especially facial, hand care, and body care creams. Its ability to softens, moisturises, and defends the skin makes it a favourite choice between consumers. Though raw Honey is more expensive than other kinds of Honey (which also makes beauty products containing it more costly), it is relatively reasonable compared to other skin cosmetics for your face and body. Honey skin looks, which is more and more trendy nowadays, means above all having a well-nourished, shiny, and plump face and body skin. Who would not want that?!

Anti-Aging Medicine | The Center for Natural & Integrative …

Our Integrative Approach to Slowing Aging and Increasing Longevity

During your two hour visit, our physicians will get detailed history and discuss your current state of health, focusing on your concerns. A brief physical exam is performed and laboratory testing, including analysis of blood, urine, and stool samples may be recommended. Any previously diagnosed medical conditions will be considered and additional diagnostic testing may be performed. Electrocardiograms (EKG), exercise tolerance assessments, and heart stress tests may be advised if you are at risk for heart disease. Depending on your age, mammograms, bone density scans, prostate exams, colonoscopies, and ultrasounds will be recommended where appropriate. All of these physical evaluations will help determine your current physical age and help steer our treatments toward slowing the aging processes you are undergoing.

As your physicians complete the analysis of all the medical tests, they can begin to outline a personalized anti-aging program for you. The results of your blood, urine, and stool tests will help identify physiological imbalances that might be impacting the quality of your health.

Hormone replacement therapy is the essence of anti-aging medicine. By restoring your bodys levels of hormones to those of a young adult, you are taking one giant step away from the aging process. At the Center, our physicians are well-versed in the safe use of natural hormones to boost energy, vitality, and libido, as well as lower risk ofheart disease, osteoporosis, and many other degenerative diseases.Read more about the natural hormone therapies we offer, including testosterone, estrogen, DHEA, human growth hormone, and thyroid replacement. Neurotransmitter levels that affect sleep and mood are also tested for and corrected.

Dietary fat is a major source of free radicals. Many age-related and degenerative diseases, including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Parkinsons disease, and cataracts, are associated with increased intake of fat. In addition, dietary sugars chemically alter the proteins in your body, ultimately damaging your immune system and kidneys.

Following a low-fat, low-sugar diet is one of the most effective ways to slow down the aging process. More important, our practitioners will teach you how to shop for and prepare low-fat, low-sugar meals to make them part of your regular diet. High blood cholesterol, for example, can put undue pressure on the cardiovascular system, causing the heart muscles to age prematurely. By identifying this particular risk, we can increase the longevity of your heart and your life.

Depending on your case, a detoxification program may also be recommended. By reducing the toxin levels in your body, damage to your cells and stress on your cell repair systems can be minimized and ultimately slow the aging process. Carefully regimented dietary restrictions may be suggested to cleanse the body of ingested toxins it may be harboring.

Chelation therapy to specifically reduce levels of mercury, lead, and arsenic is also available. We have practitioners available to guide you through a complete detoxification program including the infrared sauna.

The path toward greater longevity requires a steadfast commitment to healthier habits beyond these specific treatments. It sounds simple, but keeping active, eating a diverse diet rich in antioxidants, and getting plenty of sleep are some of the most natural, effective anti-aging measures that one can take. As with all of our therapies, we can help devise a plan centered on achievable goals for your health that mesh well with your lifestyle and personality.

We have a variety of nutriceuticals and phytonutrients available to enhance your anti-aging therapy. These nutritional supplements are all natural and based on thousands of years of traditional herbal medicine. Your physician will work with you to incorporate these into your diet to encourage better overall health and strengthen your immunity to prevent disease. Be sure to communicate with all your doctors before incorporating any new therapies, as some of these supplements are still undergoing FDA evaluation and may also have interactions with other medications you are taking.

Many of the supplements we recommend and offer to patients as a convenience are termed medical foods and all are extremely effective in optimizing health and vitality. By helping to limit the damage done to DNA by free radicals, nutrients can help slow aging at the cellular level by reducing the strain on the DNA repair machinery and keeping our cells healthier longer.Intravenous nutrition with vitamin C and B vitamins all have anti-aging properties and provide energy to our cells. Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a universal antioxidant and is very powerful just as is glutathione. These therapies are invaluable in ensuring that we get the nutrients we need because oral supplementation may not be effective due to absorption issues.

Our brains are affected by the same processes that contribute to overall aging. How well we take care of ourselves affects not only our general health, but also our mental function. We utilize powerful herbs such asGinkgo biloba, vinpocetineand ginseng to help boost brain power and increase mental energy and stamina for overall health and well-being. Intravenous nutrition is also invaluable as is plaque therapy.

Our doctors will prescribe a preventative and comprehensive treatment plan that is tailored to your needs and fits into your lifestyle. Our team at The Center for Natural & Integrative Medicine will regularly monitor your progress and track the effectiveness of your program making adjustments if necessary. Our goal is to support you and advise you every step of the way. We work in conjunction with your existing doctors to ensure the best possible care.

Do you feel like age is catching up with you? Have you noticed wrinkles, hair loss, reduced physical energy, or diminished sex drive? Do you get sick more often than you used to?Although we typically think of the external signs of aging, with the emergence of wrinkles and graying hair, aging is also an internal process that has roots at the cellular level. All the organs of our bodies are made up of individual cells that have limited life spans. While we are young, our cells divide many times as we grow. Our cells are capable of repairing themselves, communicating with other cells, and interacting with all the physiological molecules that ultimately define our current state of health. Scientists have discovered, however, that our cells have a limited capacity to divide and repair.

Laboratory studies have shown that cell aging patterns are genetically encoded and cell death occurs along a predictable schedule of events for different cell types. Our DNA is bundled into chromosomes, each capped with repeated sequences called telomeres. During cell division, the cell attempts to make a complete copy of itself, including all of its DNA, but researchers have discovered that these telomeres shorten over successive cell divisions. The telomeres help protect the DNA from radical arrangements (that might cause cancer, for example) and they can be lengthened by an enzyme called telomerase. If the telomeres are allowed to become too short, however, the cell senses this problem and puts in motion a cascade of events that will result in its own death. This mechanism of programmed cell death, also called apoptosis, is a critical part of proper human development and a natural part of the life cycle of a cell.

A cells life also comes to a close if its DNA sustains damage more quickly than the DNA repair machinery can compensate for it. One of the major causes of DNA damage in our cells is the presence of free radicals. These highly reactive molecules can cause significant damage to both the proteins and the DNA in our cells by undergoing chemical reactions with them. The free radical theory of aging suggests that these molecules accumulate naturally over time and that our DNA repair machinery copes less and less well with the damage. Thus, our physical aging would be correlated with this decline in the health of our individual cells. Free radical damage has also been scientifically linked to many age-related medical conditions, including arthritis, Alzheimers, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Intriguingly, it has been shown that antioxidants can slow or stop the damage caused by free radicals by helping to balance the chemical reactions in the cells. Antioxidant levels can be increased by adding antioxidant rich foods to the diet or by taking nutritional supplements.

Because our cells become less resilient as we age, so do our bodies. We become more susceptible to illnesses and once we get sick, it takes longer to recover. Wounds may also take longer to heal. As some cells begin to lose function, they cease expressing hormones, further shifting our physiological balance. All of the changes to our immunity, metabolism, and body chemistry can have a huge impact on our health and well-being as we age.

Some of the signs of aging are superficial. Wrinkles develop, particularly near the eyes, mouth, and other expressive parts of the face. As the skin begins to lose its elasticity and the layer of fat beneath the skin begins to diminish, the face can take on a further wrinkled or gaunt appearance. Age-related hair loss may also occur in both men and women due to hormonal changes or genetic factors.

Our immune systems and cell repair systems gradually become less efficient as a person ages, responding less quickly and vigorously to challenges. People may become more susceptible to illnesses and, once acquired, find them harder to recover from. Wounds may heal more slowly and muscle soreness after exercise can linger longer. If cell and tissue damage accumulate more quickly than the body can make repairs, cell death will become more frequent, causing more aging related symptoms and maladies to emerge.

Significant hormonal changes also take place during aging. For women, the most radical change occurs with the onset of menopause, in which the ovaries lose function. In addition to the cessation of menstruation, there are other physiological changes that occur due to the sudden lack of estrogen production in the body. The changes in bone mineral density can lead to osteoporosis, increasing the risk of bone fractures. Sleeping patterns, libido, and mood may also be effected by menopause. In men, testosterone production continues during aging, though levels begin to decline after age forty. This reduction in testosterone can lead to hair loss, muscle mass reduction, and sexual dysfunction.

Some mental symptoms associated with aging include increased forgetfulness and difficulties learning new things. The brain becomes less pliable during the later years of life, though the chemical and structural changes that might mediate this phenomenon are unclear. The rate of cognitive decline varies from person to person and only drops steeply for some near the very end of life.

While aging is a natural phenomenon, there are also lifestyle choices and other factors that can accelerate the process and reduce a persons longevity. In other words, it is possible for people to prematurely age their bodies and shorten their lives.

Too much exposure to the sun can age a persons skin prematurely. The ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight can damage DNA, hastening skin cell death. UV overexposure can also contribute to the breakdown of the matrix of collagen and elastin that forms the fleshy layer of skin beneath the surface. As the skin weakens, it loses its spring, sags, and wrinkles begin to form. The skin can also become freckled, dry, or blotchy. DNA damage from UV light can also increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

Excessive alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine can also accelerate the aging processes through direct cell damage or complications following long term use. Nicotine, for example, both increases the heart rate and constricts blood vessels, elevating blood pressure and putting undue pressure on the cardiovascular system. The complications of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular diseases can dramatically reduce both longevity and the quality of the final years of life.

Poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyle can also push the metabolic balance of the body toward a more limited life span by increasing the chances of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other life-shortening conditions. Perhaps ironically, nutrition and exercise are often neglected in the interest of saving time.

The accumulation of toxins in the body can contribute to premature aging by stimulating the formation of free radicals or causing other types of cell damage. While pollutants in the air and water certainly contribute to a persons toxin levels, many toxins are consumed unknowingly. Food additives and preservatives are quite common, even among superficially healthy foods. Hormones, pesticides, and industrial chemicals may also taint non-organic foods bought at the grocery store.Insufficient sleep can also contribute to aging by denying the body its much needed rest and repair. Information processing and memory formation occur as the brain progresses through the phases of sleep, sharpening the mind while it rests. Sleep can also impact hormones, metabolism, and immunity, all of which influence our states of health. Chronic sleep deprivation and the resulting sleep debt can lead to a multitude of persistent health problems, affecting a person physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Finally, stress can prematurely age the body in numerous ways. Researchers have shown that stress can increase the speed with which telomeres shorten, causing cell death to occur more rapidly. Stress can also increase blood pressure, aging the cardiovascular system, and put significant strain on the nervous system and immune system. Stress can contribute to hair loss and wrinkle formation, both which can also make a person appear older than they are.

The Best 40th Birthday Gifts, According to People Whove Reached (or Are About to Reach) 40 – New York Magazine

26 items in this article 6 items on sale!

Photo: Courtesy Universal Pictures

If you have a friend or a loved one about to turn 40, its likely that theyre currently taking stock of all theyve accomplished so far, while in the back of their mind gearing up for a whole new batch of anxieties. Its a birthday that can feel like a whirlwind, according to Christopher Choa, the director of cities and urban development at engineering firm AECOM. Youve mastered what you need to do for family and work, he told us, but youre anxious about having to deal with so many responsibilities on your own.

It would make sense, then, that such a transitional moment might call for a gift that seems a step up from the types of things you might give on any other birthday. According to Choa and the seven other cool people we spoke to all of whom have either marched over the hill or are about to turn 40 the best 40th-birthday gifts can be things to help one stay calm and relaxed or allow for a bit of self-pampering, items that let the recipient further indulge in a favorite pastime (like a nice cutting board for the home chef), or special pieces that the recipient could have for the next 40 years. (After all, by 40, youve learned to take care of your favorite things, says Scott Schuman, the founder of the Sartorialist.) Below, our eight cool people share 26 ideas from a sleek hairbrush to an anti-aging moisturizer to a statement pair of socks to the aforementioned cutting board that they say will help anyone entering their fifth decade do so in style.

Marie du Petit Thouars, the founder of cult-y candle and fragrance brand Maison Louie Marie, says that at 40, a person might find themselves with the time and space in their home to develop new skills. Thats precisely why she recommends gifting this pasta-making machine (that a professional pasta-maker has also recommended to us). Its something youd never buy yourself, du Petit Thouars says, but thats what makes it a wonderful addition to any foodie friends kitchen.

By the time youre 40, you might want even the most functional objects in your home to reflect your aesthetic and taste, according to du Petit Thouars, who says that this French press which weve also written about before manages to be both functional, unique, and calming. Its simple, the ceramic is unusual, and its elegant, she says all things that make it sound like a pretty great gift.

Fashion blogger and flight attendant Tenille Murphy told us that this Stagg kettle (that weve called the most stylish electric kettle there is) was a spot on gift from her husband. She adds: My first thought was how pretty, dare I say, sexy, it was, before noting that its as functional as it is stylish. As Murphy explains, the Stagg kettle has a digital readout enabling you to heat water to a precise temperature, which is one reason why she says it would make a great gift for any full-time tea drinker. And the kettles sleek, matte-black finish begs to be on prominent display in any kitchen, she says.

Another 40th-worthy kitchen tool, according to Murphy, is a high-end knife, like this Japanese chefs knife that she owns and loves. Japanese knives are lighter, typically hand honed, and, in my opinion, prettier, she told us. Murphy says if you really want to impress your recipient, you could gift the knife with one of Sur La Tables knife-skills classes. She took one and called it a game-changer that taught her how to best use her new knife for chopping, paring, slicing, and cutting like a professional chef. If youre interested in giving a knife but want to shop around, check out our everything guide to knives.

Should your recipient be all set with knives, Murphy says that an equally thoughtful gift would be a high-quality cutting board they can use with them. You cant just cut on any old surface once you have good knives, Murphy explains. According to her, these Epicurean cutting boards dont damage blades, stack nicely in drawers, come in a variety of sizes, and best of all, are very affordable.

And should your recipient be all set with knives and cutting boards, Murphy recommends giving them this tray that she calls a safe place to store their beauties without damaging their sharp edges. Because it can fit inside a drawer, the tray helps to keep countertops clutter free, and unlike wood blocks that sit on counters, it doesnt matter which slot I lay my knives in.

Fancy olive oil is another thing someone rarely buys for themselves, but that most home cooks really appreciate. While weve written about many chef-approved olive oils, this high-quality bottle du Petit Thouars recommends is new to us. She found it at a small store near her home in L.A. that she says only sells the most amazing Italian goods. For more olive oils to choose from, check out our list of the best olive oils, according to chefs.

Du Petit Thouars adds that shed love anyone who gave her this healthy dark chocolate. Its from Belgium, where I grew up, and I always come back to it. If you choose to go the dark-chocolate route, consider gifting this with writer and cook Skye McAlpines treasured dark-chocolate tip that she shared with our friends at Strategist UK: My secret obsession is four chunks of chocolate on hot toast with a sprinkling of salt and a drizzle of olive oil. I cant tell you how unbelievably good it is.

Im turning 40 in April, and with every passing year, my interest in motivating myself to go out at night has dwindled, Brett Heyman, the founder of accessories brands Edie Parker and Flower by Edie Parker, told us. However, my interest in having friends over for a cocktail and a truffle goat cheese or soft ewes milk on a cracker has skyrocketed. Thats why she recommends sending your new 40-year-old a cheese-of-the-monthmembership, like this one from Murrays Cheese, which will ensure them a delivery of the latest and greatest fromages for as many months or years as you choose. In Heymans words, its the most thoughtful way to say I see you, and I love you.

For the big 4-0, I dont want to give a practical gift that will be swept up in the tide of daily life and forgotten, says writer Amanda Fortini, but rather a beautiful, not-so-useful object that you will treasure and would probably never buy for yourself. Thats why she chose to give her husband this set of tarot cards from Taschen, which is based on Salvador Dals cards commissioned for the James Bond film Live and Let Die. In addition to being a full deck you can use for a reading, the cards, which Fortini says are equal parts trippy and spooky and come in a purple felt box, would make for an eye-catching coffee-table accessory.

Perhaps your recipient is a sucker for the latest Scandinavian dramas or lives for MSNBCs nightly lineup? If so, you might want to get them something theyll really, really use. Yes, $1,500 can seem like an insane amount of money to spend on a TV, says Strategist senior editor Peter Martin, but OLED, the LED alternative thats been top of the television market in recent years, really does feel like 3-D. Martin says that this LG television specifically is worthy of the big spend you might be planning if this birthday gift is going to a significant other or an old friend, noting that they can enjoy it for decades to come. Entering any new decade brings the stress of change, but your fifth decade can prove to be a particularly unsettling one, according to the folks we spoke to. Du Petit Thouars told us her go-to gift for someone anxious about their birthday is this solid brass incense burner that she calls an elevated way to burn incense (and looks good whether in use or not). The vessel burns the incense horizontally and has a curved catch-all brass tray underneath, minimizing mess and making it easy to clean, too.

According to Athena Hewett, the founder of skin-care studio Monastery, stylish candles that dont look millennial are increasingly hard to find. Thats why, for a 40th birthday, she recommends going for something more unexpected and sophisticated, like one of these sculptural candles from Carl Durkow. The unscented beeswax designs come in fun shapes that Hewett says are perfect for any mantel or shelf, and will draw attention whether lit or not.

If youd rather give a sophisticated candle that also smells nice, Fortini told us these candles from the cult perfumer Regime des Fleurs that she loves to give her friends would make for a great 40th-birthday gift. They come in a lovely porcelain vessel that looks like an antiquity unearthed, she explains, adding that recipients can use the vessel to hold pens or makeup or change after the wax burns down. And they smell divine, she promises.

At 40, life is complicated enough as it is, Choa told us. To simplify it somewhat, he recommends giving several pairs of these Albert Kreuz socks in the striking red color. With matching socks, he says, your recipient will never need to sort after laundering ever again, and their socks also wont look like anyone elses. And once they start wearing them, Choa says from experience that others will notice and, soon enough, the recipient will be set up in perpetuity for recurring supply.

For the well-coiffed woman or man who might want to start their new decade with a quality hairbrush, Hewett says this Yves Durif comb-and-brush set that she keeps spotting feels like the Mason Pearson for our generation. A well-made brush like this one, she says, offers a more luxurious massage for your scalp, is better at detangling, and stimulates the oil in the follicles to smooth and shine your hair. (Hewett notes that this one is the perfect size for throwing in your bag, too.)And like any good quality tool, its excellent craftsmanship is just obvious to an adult, she adds.

Heyman told us that jewelry is one of two gifts (along with that cheese) that would assuage her slight dread, because its personal, meaningful, and, if chosen well, cool as hell. If youre looking for inspiration, she says one of the best pieces of jewelry she ever received is an ID bracelet with I Love You in her daughters handwriting engraved onto it. While Heymans style from the ultra-high-end jeweler Sidney Garber is no longer available, this 14-karat Mejuri bracelet, while still expensive, costs a fraction of Garbers pieces and comes with the option to engrave for no extra cost. Mejuri, we should note, is fast becoming a Strategist favorite for special jewelry, with some of its hoops making an appearance in our list of 130 gifts you can buy for less than $104 (all of which were recommended by people with exacting taste). The brand is also one of nine that our own staffers recently tested jewelry from, with our tester concluding that Merjuri uses quality materials for less [money] than what youd typically pay at a traditional retailer.

According to Hewett, just because youre turning 40 doesnt mean youre unable to keep up with fashion trends you might just want a more elevated way to do so. One such trend she is keeping up with are scrunchies, noting that the 90s hair accessory is having an extended moment and not just among VSCO girls and other teens. For an age-appropriate twist on the scrunchie, she pointed us to this nice and classic satin-silk option from Sophie Buhai a designer whose scrunchies weve written about before with a name that kind of says it all.

If the trend catching your recipients eye is tie-dye, a 40th-birthday-appropriate option that will help them to fit in at Grateful Dead shows and the school playground alike, according to Hewett, is this refined spin on the tie-dye tee from designer John Elliot.

A person approaching 40 will be interested in preserving their best stuff for the next 40 years, says Schuman, who recommends giving both men and women a fashion essential that many overlook: A pair (or two or three) of shoe trees. Shoe trees are super important to maintain good shape and order for both dress shoes and expensive sneakers, he told us, adding that theyre a great way to maintain what we already own. Schuman doesnt have a favorite style: Buy the best you can afford, he told us. While there are less expensive plastic options, these shoe trees made of 100 percent cedar have a handcrafted look that makes them a bit more giftable, and are also quite functional (in addition to helping shoes keep their shape, the cedars moisture-absorbing ability will help dry them out between wears).

In kind of the same vein, du Petit Thouars says these made-in-Italy scented tablets from Santa Maria Novella are a great gift for the clotheshorse about to turn 40. My husband first gifted me these, and I now cannot live without them in my closet, she says. Rest them on any free space in your closet, and the rose-infused wax will have your clothes smelling like a summer garden (just note that the brand says not to let them touch any fabric directly).

For a practical but still luxurious gift, Murphy recommends giving this anti-aging cleanser and moisturizing face oil from True Botanicals, a brand that she describes as a beautiful, all-natural skin-care company with products that are good for the body and for the planet. According to Murphy, the moisturizing face oil fights the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (True Botanicals calls it our best-selling moisturizer), and the cleanser purifies while gently cleansing, without stripping skin. She adds that they come in amber glass bottles that would look very nice on the shelves of a medicine cabinet.

For the new 40-year-old who is also a passionate gardener (indoors or out), du Petit Thouars recommends this book on foraging and arranging. I like their approach to flower arranging with wild plants, she told us, adding that it reminds her of her summers spent flower-picking and arranging at her childhood home outside Paris.

Fortini also says the right book can make for a great 40th-birthday gift, noting that the best book to give would be one that has meant something to you personally, with a note explaining why. Didion, the collected 1960s and 1970s work of author Joan Didion, is the one shed give to anyone she knows turning 40, she says.

If the 40-year-old in your life is always jotting things down, du Petit Thouars says they might appreciate a more elevated notebook in which to do so. Everyone needs a classy notebook at 40, she says, recommending this illustrated option from Herms. It may not be cheap for a notebook, but it is cheap for Herms, and would allow you to surprise someone with something from the luxury brand without breaking the bank.

RENAISSANCE FITNESS, WELLNESS & HEALTHY LIVING BRAND SPEAKS TO THE SCIENCE OF CRYOTHERAPY

Renaissance, a fitness, wellness & healthy living brand which operates fitness, functional movement & wellness studios in Monmouth County and recently, Hudson County, would like to educate the public on what is now a very popular non-medical health treatment extolling a wealth of benefits, Cryotherapy.

Renaissance is owned by Danielle Buccellato, a popular fitness and wellness innovator who was an early pioneer of Pilates and other fitness modalities. She operates Renaissance Pilates in Red Bank, a Pilates and fitness sanctuary which has been in operation for 5 years, and in December 2019, she opened a second location at Bell Works in Holmdel, an integrated fitness & wellness center, with her sister, Joelle Buccellato. Cryotherapy is offered at the Bell Works location, and Renaissance seeks to clarify the who, what, when, where and why of this latest technology.

CRYOTHERAPY

Cryotherapy is an advanced technology which subjects the whole body or just certain parts of the body, to freezing temperatures. This non-medical, non-invasive technique has been in the news frequently with videos surfacing on every social media platform showing a person entering the Cryotherapy chamber. Renaissance explains the three types of Cryotherapy and the processes, procedures, and benefits.

WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY

People enter a vertical-standing chamber where liquid nitrogen cooled air will be between 166 - 220 degrees. A standard treatment is 3 minutes, and while clients will have full privacy within the chamber, a technician is always present to assure safety. Renaissance encourages individuals to speak with their physicians prior to trying Cryotherapy if there are health issues present. Some of the scientifically reported and documented benefits from individuals using Cryotherapy include:

Increase In Energy

Weight Loss

Reduced Muscle & Joint Pain

Accelerated Recovery From Exercise

Better Circulation

Better Sleep

Better Skin Elasticity (Anti-Aging)

Improved Mood & Feelings Of Well Being

Stronger Immunity

Less Inflammation

Release Of Endorphins (Elevated Mood)

Faster Recovery From Sports & Training

Increased Testosterone Levels

Increased Libido

Less Severe Hangovers

CRYOSKIN

Cryoskin is a 28-minute treatment that uses thermoelectric cooling to freeze fat, causing the cell death of subcutaneous fat tissue without damaging the skin above. The destroyed cells pass naturally through the lymphatic system, leaving a more toned body. Cryoskin can be targeted to problem areas such as the abdomen, hips, and thighs.

CRYOSLIM & CRYOTONE

A Cryoskin slimming session uses a three-phase thermal shock to initiate apoptosis or programmed cell death. The slimming is actually a localized fat loss session which naturally passes fat debris from the body via the lymphatic system. This type of session can assist with the loss of inches or help with stubborn pockets of fat that do not improve with diet and exercise alone.

A Cryoskin toning session can be used on the face and/or body and utilizes the application of cold temperatures to tighten, smooth, and shape areas lacking elasticity by increasing microcirculation (oxygenated blood flow), collagen, and elastin production. The toning session addresses loose skin and cellulite. Areas which can be treated include the face, chin, abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, bra line and knees. Benefits include:

Reduction In Appearance Of Cellulite

Improvement In Body Shape

Immediate Enhancement Of & Improvement In Skin Quality

CRYOFACIAL

A Cryoskin Facial is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure which employs a special Cryoskin wand to provide toning in the facial area. The process, which lasts 20 minutes, can result in an increase in collagen production. This increase in collagen can then help to diminish fine lines & wrinkles, to improve the complexion and to reduce the appearance of pores. The procedure can also be performed on the neck or dcollet area and might even reduce the appearance of a double chin. The technology is hailed as the most effective non-surgical immediate facelift.

About The Evolution Of The Renaissance Brand

Renaissance is actually known for much more than Pilates, and with the over 60 fitness & functional movement classes offered in different fitness modalities and the new wellness center with the latest in anti-aging services at Bell Works in Holmdel, the brand has evolved into an integrated solution for optimal health. Recently entering the holistic sphere, Renaissance also offers nutritional counseling & coaching services, organic meal preparation & delivery, and functional medicine. These services complement fitness classes and innovative wellness choices and technologies already offered including Whole Body Cryotherapy, Cryoskin, Cryoslim, Cryotone, Infrared Sauna and Oxygen Therapy (O2).

The expansion into holistic services, which are offered in collaboration with holistic health practitioners, Michael Buron of Health Chek and Marie Maglio of The Proper Palate, is part of the Renaissance mission to help people attain physical, mental and spiritual balance in their lives through healthy bodies and minds, according to Danielle Buccellato.

Hilary Duff Shares Her "Busy Mom" Beauty Routine, Including Favorite Treatment for Melasma – What To Expect When You’re Expecting

Hilary Duff, who is mom to Luca, 7, and Banks, 1, recently shared her busy mom makeup routine with Vogue including the product she uses to treat her pregnancy melasma.

Im a busy mom, the actress says in the video. I dont have a ton of time to do my makeup, but this version today is on a day when I have my kids but also have a couple of meetings and I want to look like I put some effort in.

Just so you know, What to Expect may earn commissions from shopping links. Why trust our product recommendations?

Duff starts off her routine by washing her hands or using hand sanitizer. She then reaches for her toner.

One really cool thing that happened to me when I had babies is I got melasma, she shared, pointing to a dark spot near the top of her forehead.

Every day, I say a little prayer that its taking care of that dark spot right there, she says, rubbing onOle Henriksens Glow2OH Dark Spot Toner($29; sephora.com).

Other products in Duff's kit includeREN Clean SkincareKeep Young and Beautiful Anti-Aging Eye Cream ($44;sephora.com) andPerricone MDNo Makeup Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 20 ($60;ulta.com).

Melasma is a commonskin condition that causes brown to gray-brown patches to develop, usually on the face. Also referred to as the mask of pregnancy, melasma appears when a sharp rise in estrogen and progesterone levels stimulates excess melanin production, also known as hyperpigmentation. As a result, your freckles and moles may look darker.

Melasma is especially common in darker-skinned women, or those of Asian and African descent, who have more pigment in their skin than fair-skinned people. Exposure to sunlight can make melasma worse.

The discoloration from melasma is temporary, though, and it usually disappears after you give birth or, for some women, after you stop breastfeeding.

Again, melasma tends to fade with time.

The problem with melasma is that there arent any permanent solutions, saysGary Goldenberg, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine atMount Sinaiin New York City. Still, he says many treatments help.

How to Treat Melasma

Topical products that contain kojic acid or lactic acid are helpful, Dr. Goldenberg says.In aprevious interview withWhat to Expect, dermatologist Jessica Wu, M.D., also recommended topicals with azelaic acid and vitamin C to help brighten your complexion.

As for the toner Duff likes, Dr. Goldenberg says it contains the following ingredients that may help with melasma:

Also important? Applying SPF 30 to 50 daily. If you have melasma, Dr. Goldenberg also recommends doing your best to limit your UV exposure.

The minute your skin is exposed to UV, it can re-pigment again, he explains. This isnt just sun you get at the beach. This is also sun you get through a window or windshield.

Just remember that not all skin care ingredientsare considered safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you have questions about a product that you're considering to treat dark spots, show it to your OB-GYN first.

If your melasma persists after you have your baby and it bothers you, speak to your dermatologist. They may be able to offer up individualized treatment that can help.

Invigorating procedure makes thinning hair grow thicker – Florida Today

Buy Photo

Dr. Emran R. Imami and medical assistant Maggie Smith work on a patient undergoing non-surgical hair restoration using techniques designed to stimulate new cell growth.(Photo: TIM SHORTT/ FLORIDA TODAY)

Most of us have some particular part of our anatomy that, well, bugs us.

It could be our nose, ears, neck or even the derriere that could use improvement, according to the lens through which we see ourselves.

For Leslie Burgett, its her hair.

Ive battled with it off and on for years, the Merritt Island resident said.

Her genetics predispose Burgett to alopecia, thinning hair in certain areas of the scalp. To be honest, however, Burgetts hair, while not voluminous, wasnt that scarce, either.

Dr. Emran Imami is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is an invited Fellow of the prestigious American College of Surgeons.(Photo: PROVIDED PHOTO)

A lot of people probably wouldnt have noticed, but its obvious to me, she said. When you look at yourself in the morning, what you look like sets the rest of the day, and I didnt like the way my hair looked.

Through the years, the decades, even, Burgett continued the battle with her locks. She underwent a thyroid test, since this gland could cause hair loss if malfunctioning. Thyroid was not the issue.

She tried minoxidil back when you needed a prescription for the product. Used to treat baldness in a topical format, minoxidil was originally developed as an antihypertensive vasodilator. It wouldhave helped grow hair on Burgett, but it also lowered her heart rate so much she had to quit.

After a death in the family, Burgett found that the antidepressants she was taking were growing her hair as well as loweringher stress.

Polydioxanone (PDO) Threads are inserted to stimulate hair follicles to grow. Dr. Emran R. Imami uses this non-surgical hair restoration technique at Imami Hair Restoration in Melbourne.(Photo: TIM SHORTT/ FLORIDA TODAY)

For a long time, my hair was fine, she said.

However, dropping the medication was not kind on her hair.

I started having the thinning I had years ago, said Burgett.

Treatment with PRP, or protein-rich plasma, worked well, but Burgett would have to go back to her doctor every three months to have blood drawn. A centrifuge would isolate and concentrate the healing portion of her blood, which would then be injected into her scalp to nurture flagging hair follicles.

It worked pretty well, she said.

It worked even better when she added PDO threads to the treatment.

Polydioxanone, or PDO, has been used for years in aesthetics for non-surgical facelifts and wrinkle control. The medical grade thread, made of protein and thinner in circumference than hair, both relaxes tendons and muscles in an area and simultaneously improves blood flow.

Polydioxanone (PDO) Threads are inserted to stimulate hair follicles to grow. Dr. Emran R. Imami uses this non-surgical hair restoration technique at Imami Hair Restoration in Melbourne.(Photo: TIM SHORTT/ FLORIDA TODAY)

They work with the face. They also work with hair, and patients with androgenetic alopecia have experienced hair regrowth after PDO threads were inserted into their scalps.

The threads increase inflammatory response, which in turn increases new blood vessels, said Dr. Emran Imami of Imami Skin & Cosmetic Center in Melbourne.

In medical terms, the threads perform a selective inflammatory response by encouraging the body to heal itself.

"Its like watering a plant, Imami said.

Burgett has a glowing report on her PDO threads experience, even though it has been just a couple of weeks since the procedure, which involves inserting into the scalp a series of tiny needles preloaded with the threads. The threads stay beneath the skin after the needle is withdrawn.

Ive noticed less hair falling and more hair growing back, she said.

Because the threads are fully absorbed in four to six months, the procedure should be repeated every six months, but Burgett has no problem with that.

I didnt feel a thing and I was out of there quickly, she said. After the procedure, my head felt a little heavy, like you had a hat on, but by the next morning, that feeling was gone and I was back to normal.

A research study presented at the 12thInternational Conference on Cosmetic Dermatology and Hair Care noted that patients experienced significant reduction in hair loss with PDO threads. Hair regrowth increased from an average of 65 hair follicles per centimeter of scalp to 93.

Polydioxanone (PDO) Threads are inserted to stimulate hair follicles to grow. Dr. Emran R. Imami uses this non-surgical hair restoration technique at Imami Hair Restoration in Melbourne.(Photo: TIM SHORTT/ FLORIDA TODAY)

Imami sees using the threads as part of a bigger treatment picture that can include, as in Burgetts case, PRP, and also low-level laser, daily use of vitamins such as B12 and herbal shampoos with red clover extract, and other treatments to stop, slow or even reverse hair loss. For good measure, add a touch of scalp micropigmentation to create the illusion of hair follicles through what is essentially a tattooing process.

There has been a marked increase in the science of anti-aging, reparative and regenerative medicine, and as such, there are several ways to preserve and grow healthy hair, said Imami.

Hair loss can be caused by hormonal or thyroid imbalance, diabetes, medications, genetics, stress and simply just the passage of time.

As you age, everything will thin, Imami said.

Because it usually happens gradually, hair loss often is not noticed until a significant loss has already occurred.

You have 100 hair follicles per centimeter and you can lose up to 75 percent of them and not look bald, Imami said.

The hair strands thin, and during the cycle of growth they may remain dormant for a longer period of time. Regrowth takes longer and longer, and eventually ceases altogether.

Catch them while they are still around, says Imami, or you may regret it later.

If you treat the follicles while they are still there, you can do something, but once the hair follicle dies, you cant get them back, he said. We want to maximize the growth phase of the hair cycle and the length of time it stays on the scalp, because if we can keep the hair on the head to last longer, the net effect is that you have more hair density.

Should you wait until the hair disappears, your only option is a transplant, which is effective, but takes time and is more expensive.

Burgett would rather skip the transplant and has no problem incorporating other different treatment modalities, as long as they keep hair on her head.

For women, hair is such an integral part of their self-esteem, she said.

Look your best for the holidays! Dr. Mark Golden has the solution – Patch.com

Ophthalmologist Mark Golden MD at Doctors for Visual Freedom, 875 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1820, wants everyone to look their best for the holidays. "Now is the perfect time to treat yourself or a loved one to a cosmetic procedure to refresh your look for the holidays," he says. Cosmetic fillers and Botox treatments are just some of the many services offered by Dr. Golden.

"People should not take chances by going to Botox parties and should always verify that the person administering Botox and fillers is FDA approved and a physician," Dr. Golden says. "If you are getting injections into your facial muscles, you need a doctor who has specialized training in facial anatomy and a well-developed aesthetic eye."

Dr. Golden has been performing Botox and filler injections for 17 years, ever since Botox was first FDA approved.

Pricing

Botox pricing can vary by quite a lot, Dr. Golden says. In downtown Chicago, the average price is about $20 per unit. The 11's typically take 20 units and at Dr. Golden's office that is only $195 dollars. Each additional units there are only $12.50. When a full-face treatment can use up to 60 units, Dr. Golden's charges are very reasonable.

What about fillers?

Fillers also are an amazing way to take years off the appearance in a subtle manner, he says. "We are all interested in improving and maintaining an attractive appearance. Doctors for Visual Freedom offers cosmetic treatments that are low-risk and high-result investments.

Choosing a skilled ophthalmologist like Dr. Mark Golden gives you confidence you will achieve the results you seek. Cosmetic treatments can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving you with a more youthful and attractive outlook.

Skincare Products to Reduce Dark Under-Eye Circles

Dr. Golden also has a wide range of skin care products that reduce dark circles under eyes in as little as two weeks, amazing moisturizing creams with hyaluronic acid and anti-aging creams that reduce wrinkles without using Botox.

Some people may want to try Latisse which can increase eyelash growth. Most women find a dramatic increase in lashes in 6 weeks. "Our price of $150 for the large size is much cheaper than found at most drug stores," he says.

Expansion of Eye Glass Frame Selection

With their recent move to Suite 1820 at 875 North Michigan Avenue Building, formerly the John Hancock Center, Doctors for Visual Freedom has expanded their eyeglass frame selection, adding almost a hundred new frames in the last several weeks including Gucci, Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, Emilio Pucci, Swarovski, Mark Jacobs, Jimmy Choo, Versace, Carolina Herrera and Ray Ban.

They also offer eyeglasses that are more modestly priced, using good frames and quality optics, making glasses affordable for almost any budget.

Here's a rundown of treatments and what to expect:

BOTOX Cosmetic

BOTOX Cosmetic is best known as an effective means of softening and relaxing contracting facial muscles that cause unseemly wrinkles. When your muscle is injected with BOTOX Cosmetic, it no longer receives the nerve signal to contract.

One BOTOX Cosmetic treatment can last anywhere from four to six months, but the muscle memory may cause a more permanent effect resulting in less severe muscle contractions over time. The treatment is typically complete in a few minutes with mild discomfort to the injected muscle.

Learn more about BOTOX Cosmetic here.

JUVDERM

As we age, our skin loses elasticity, and the actions of our facial muscles begin to create wrinkles and creases. The hyaluronic acid that is naturally present in your skin maintains the hydration and volume of your tissues. In medicine, this substance has been used to alleviate joint pain and treat wounds. Hyaluronic acid was first used for facial rejuvenation in Europe in 1996. The hyaluronic acid in JUVDERM works by adding volume to your skin, thereby reducing the evidence of folds and fine lines.

Learn more about JUVDERM here.

LATISSE

The use of prescription LATISSE is proven to produce longer and fuller eyelashes as well as promote eyelash growth. Results can be seen gradually within weeks and full results are achieved anywhere from eight to sixteen weeks. Using a sterile applicator, LATISSE is applied daily directly to your lashes on the upper eyelid. No surgery is needed and LATISSE is FDA approved as a medically safe procedure.

Chicago, Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights and Downtown Chicago residents have made Doctors for Visual Freedom their choice for cosmetic treatments in BOTOX Cosmetic, LATISSE and Juvederm.

Learn more about LATISSE here.

Fillers

Dr. Golden has been injecting fillers into the face to help people look younger for more than a decade. Fillers can be used diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness to the face. They fill shallow contours, soften facial creases, add volume to cheeks, and plump thin lips. With injectable fillers, you can look more youthful look for a fraction of the cost of a surgical facelift. Treatments generally take less than 30 minutes and results can last from a year to two or more.

The objective of fillers is to look better but not have the appearance of having had fillers. Patients have the opportunity to watch as fillers are applied so that they can make a judgment as to the amount to achieve the appropriate contour of the face. Our patients tell us that their friends and spouses say that they look younger or more rested, but typically no one knows unless told they are told that fillers were applied. A natural appearance is important to Dr. Golden and if you want exaggeration of expression or huge lips, you should look elsewhere for care.

BOTOX Cosmetic injections relax the muscle under a wrinkle, but fillers can fill the deep creases or lines on the face causing trouble spots to nearly disappear. Fillers are used to plump and lift cheeks, jawlines and temples as well as eliminating deep creases not amenable to BOTOX Cosmetic treatments quickly and easily.

Red Light Therapy, Blue Light Therapy, & Light Box Therapy Explained – Prevention.com

Everyone is turning toward the light these days: Red-light body sessions have become spa-menu fixtures, and LED gadgets promise to fix everything from insomnia to wrinkles. Were only scratching the surface of what light can do, says Shadab Rahman, Ph.D., an instructor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Heres what you can expect from a few trending treatments.

WHAT IT IS: A lamp that emits rays that mimic sunlight; sitting close to it for 20 to 30 minutes in the morning is said to boost mood, increase focus, and fight irritability in people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

WHAT WE KNOW: About one in five people experiences a mood dip in winter, and light boxes are the go-to antidote. The light targets the cause: a disturbance in circadian rhythm tied to the change in sunlight and darkness, explains Michael Terman, Ph.D., of the Center for Environmental Therapeutics. One study showed light therapy to be as effective as antidepressants in treating SAD, with fewer side effects.

SHOULD YOU TRY IT? Yes, but if your blues are mild, try sunlight (free!) first. Taking breaks outside or at the window can make you feel more alert and focused and improve your mood, says Rahman.

BRANDS: Carex Day-Light Classic Plus Bright Light Therapy Lamp, $115; AIRSEE Light Therapy Lamp 10,000 Lux, $34

WHAT IT IS: Special LED lightbulbs that are said to help battle insomnia by regulating your circadian rhythm; blue-emitting bulbs perk you up during the day, while blue-depleted bulbs help you sleep at night.

WHAT WE KNOW: Many studies have shown that nighttime exposure to blue light (from phones, computers, and regular lightbulbs) suppresses melatonin, the hormone needed to trigger sleep. Other studies have found that exposure to blue light during the day improves alertness.

SHOULD YOU TRY IT? Sure. We need our day-night contrast to be dramatic; one way is to use blue-enriched light on your desk during the day and blue-depleted lights wherever you relax for two hours before bed, says Rahman.

BRANDS: Lighting Science GoodNight Sleep Enhancing Bulb, $13; Harth Nite Switch Bulb, $20

WHAT IT IS: Beds, masks, and handheld wands that emit red light claim to plump skin and reduce fine lines.

WHAT WE KNOW: A 2013 study showed that light treatments could help reduce wrinkles. Red light has anti-inflammatory effects and increases collagen production, tightening skin and improving texture and tone, says Angela Lamb, M.D., a dermatologist at New York Citys Mount Sinai Hospital.

SHOULD YOU TRY IT? Only if you can spend a lot and keep your expectations in check. These treatments do offer modest improvement, especially when combined with anti-aging creams that include retinol, hydroxy acids, or antioxidants like vitamin C, says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., Mount Sinais director of research in dermatology.

The Effects of Exercise on Your Skin – LIVESTRONG.COM

You may already know that exercise wields a huge influence on your wellbeing, from improving cardiovascular health to strengthening bones and muscles to boosting brainpower. But it might come as a surprise to discover that a sweat session also has a pretty significant affect on your skin for better and worse.

The effects of exercise on your skin aren't always great, but there are steps you can take to tame them.

Here, dermatologists describe exactly what happens to your largest organ (yep, you read that right) when you're getting your fitness fix plus skin-care tips to minimize the unwanted side effects of exercise on your skin.

When you sweat it out at the gym, your blood vessels widen a process called vasodilation.

"This increased blood flow ups the supply of oxygen to your skin and nourishes skin cells by carrying nutrients to repair damage from the sun and environment," says Sonya Johnson, MD, dermatologist and CEO of Dermatology Associates, PC.

Not only will your face look brighter, but that surge of hemoglobin gives you a rosy glow that can last up to two hours, according to the book Skeletal Muscle Circulation.

But for those with rosacea, vasodilation has a flip side: It triggers inflammation, which, along with increased body temperature, can worsen the condition.

The fix: Keep a cool cloth nearby to apply to your face to keep from overheating, suggests Sonia Batra, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at University of Southern California and cohost of The Doctors.

Are you on track to achieve your fitness goals? Download the MyPlate app to keep tabs on the number of calories you burn during your workouts and stay motivated.

Perspiration cools you down and pushes toxic free radicals (compounds linked to aging and disease) out of your body via your pores all good things but it can also irritate your skin.

"It can clog sweat glands and body hair follicles, resulting in an acne-like eruption called folliculitis," says Robin Evans, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical instructor of dermatology at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. "Folliculitis can occur anywhere that is sweaty, especially areas of occlusion like the back and chest."

Dr. Batra points out that those spots also have a higher concentration of sebaceous glands that can become blocked when sweat and dirt dry on your skin's surface. Enter: backne, buttne and boobne.

"Eczema can also be exacerbated by sweat, which breaks down the skin barrier and can worsen itching," Dr. Batra says.

The fix: Wear loose clothing when youre working up a sweat. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), form-fitting gear can aggravate folliculitis. Shower right afterward with warm water to remove perspiration, followed by a gentle moisturizer to restore the skins barrier.

Washing your face pre-workout is a good way to remove potentially pore-clogging dirt, oil and makeup.

Plugged hair follicles can also trigger blackheads or whiteheads, which might become inflamed or infected and turn into acne, Dr. Evans says.

The fix: To buffer yourself against a zit attack, take off your makeup pre-workout. The polling firm CivicScience found in 2019 that 25 percent of women wear it while exercising. Not only does it clog your glands and hair follicles even more, but its often contaminated with bacteria, which can aggravate the skin and lead to breakouts, Dr. Evans says.

Even if you're makeup-free, it's still best to wash your face first. "Dirt and oil build up on your skin, and you want to remove that," says Debra Jaliman, MD, a dermatologist, professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and author of Skin Rules. "Use face wipes if you're short on time they don't require water or soap."

Then, if you have a blemish you want to hide, dot on concealer or smooth on a tinted moisturizer instead of coating your face in foundation. "A tinted BB or CC cream adds that hint of color and gives you a glowy look but is usually very light," Dr. Jaliman says.

"You need adequate fluids and electrolytes to ensure proper skin functioning. If your face looks pale or your lips feel dry, that's a sign your moisture level is low."

Everyone's buzzing about gut flora these days, but did you know that your skin also has a microbiome?

"The skin microbiome is an ecosystem of organisms living on your skin, including bacteria, viruses and fungi," Dr. Batra says. "A healthy microbiome protects skin against infection and maintains a strong barrier between your body and external elements."

Exercise-induced sweat can disturb that sensitive microbiome. "Certain organisms, such as yeast, thrive in a moist environment," Dr. Batra says. "Allowing sweat to remain on the skin for a long period of time often shifts the balance of the microbiome and allows yeast to overgrow." That can lead to an itchy, scaly rash on your face and torso, plus dandruff.

And speaking of germs, a hot, humid gym is an ideal bacteria breeding ground. A December 2014 study in the International Journal of Environmental and Public Health found an "alarming" degree of bacteria on equipment like free weights, exercise machines and mats. In 2017, research by the website FitRated which tests and rates popular fitness equipment tested 27 pieces of equipment from three different gyms and discovered that it contained significantly more germs than a cafeteria tray, toilet seat and faucet knobsand 70 percent of it was potentially harmful to humans.

The upshot: Every time you put your hands on a yoga mat or cardio machine and then touch your face, you're spreading bacteria across your complexion.

The fix: Dr. Evans suggests bringing your own mat and spraying it down with a cleaner after activity, such as a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol. Many gyms also offer wipes to keep germs at bay. Hop in the shower as soon as you can, too, and consider sudsing up with a microbiome-friendly wash, like Mother Dirts Biome-Friendly Foaming Cleanser. Its chock-full of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), a good bacteria that converts irritating compounds in our sweat, like ammonia and urea, into skin-soothing nitrate and nitrous oxide. In a small-but-encouraging study of 24 people presented in September 2014 by the American Society for Microbiology, those who applied AOB to their face reported better skin condition and appearance than a control group.

Sweating can dry out your skin, which is one reason it's so important to hydrate during and after your workouts.

When you sweat, your body loses moisture including from your skin. Al fresco workouts pack a double punch because sun exposure also zaps hydration.

"You need adequate fluids and electrolytes to ensure proper skin functioning," Dr. Evans says. "If your face looks pale or your lips feel dry, that's a sign your moisture level is low."

The fix: Grab a bottle of coconut water or a sports drink, and snack on an energy bar or a banana. If youre outside, remember to slather on SPF. Sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide and zinc will give you the best broad-spectrum protection, Dr. Evans says. Avoid products containing mineral oil or glycerin, which can clog your pores. Sun-protective workout clothes can also shield you from harmful rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends items with a UPF rating of at least 50.

Chub rub making workouts uncomfortable?

"Repeated rubbing or exposure to moisture or irritating fabrics can break down skin cells, leading to a rash that may sting or burn," Dr. Batra says.

The fix: Apply antiperspirant to areas of your body that sweat a lot, and lubrication such as creams, oils or powders wherever theres friction, Dr. Batra recommends. Also, stick to moisture-wicking clothing that let perspiration evaporate, instead of materials like cotton that hold onto sweat and keep your skin damp.

Research shows that exercise can give you a smoother, brighter complexion.

Collagen is a protein found in connective tissue that helps make your skin firm, full and smooth. But as you age, your collagen levels drop off, according to the AAD, causing lines and sagging.

The good news: You can partly reverse that process by getting your cardio on. "Fibroblasts are cells that produce collagen," Dr. Johnson says. "When you exercise, fibroblast activity increases, generating more collagen." Hello, bouncy, dewy skin.

And the benefits don't stop there. As you grow older, your top layer of skin becomes thicker, rougher, and drier. At the same time, the deeper skin layers thin by about 6.4 percent each decade, leading to drooping and wrinkles particularly in the face, neck, chest, hands and forearms, according to a February 2013 review in the journal Advances in Wound Care.

Consider exercise your anti-aging elixir: Research featured in the journals Aging Cell in August 2015 and Frontiers in Physiology in May 2019 revealed that working out can make your face look up to 25 years younger.

"Exercise stimulates substances called myokines specifically interleukin-15, which increases the thickness of the deeper layers of the skin and decreases the thickness of the outer layers," Dr. Jaliman says. The result? A smoother, brighter, more baby-faced complexion. Yes, please!

Getting Fit Is Costing a Bit More in West Hollywood – WEHOville

The most expensive gym in West Hollywood? The answer to that question used to be Equinox, which charges an initiation fee of $200 to $300 and then $300 a month for membership. But then along came Dogpound, the celebrity fitness center that opened in May on Robertson Boulevard. No membership required there, but a 60-minute workout with a trainer costs $200, or a total of $2,280 if you go for 12 sessions in a month. Theres a decent chance youll see Justin Bieber pumping weights nearby.

And now theres Monarch Athletic Club, which is opening Dec. 12 at 8730 Sunset Blvd. The cost of a membership there ranges from $1,250 to $2,000 a month, with the basics including unlimited personal training, quarterly evaluations, nutritional advice, and access to the clubs amenities, including Monarchs social club. The pricier membership offers services such as metabolic panel testing, 30- to 60-minute sports massages, ongoing physical therapy sessions, IV therapy and injections, anti-aging treatments and a concierge doctor that can be booked same-day, for house, office, hotel, or work calls.

Monarch Athletic Club says on its website that to even call it a fitness brand is a gross understatement; instead, the club serves as a hub for personal growth and optimization.

Another attribute that Monarch calls out is the fact that it is Private & Exclusive. Monarch is only available to members and not to the general public. Like-minded members will be able to work towards their fitness and health goals without distraction.

Dr. Ryan Greene is the CEO of Monarch Athletic Club and serves as the principal medical advisor. He is an osteopathic physician specializing in human performance, sports medicine and nutrition as well as cosmetic dermatology.

Geneticists Attempt To Help Chemotherapy Patients Could End Age-Related Hair Loss, Wrinkled Skin And Reduced Energy – Forbes

A University of Alabama cancer geneticist is taking his anti-aging research to the next level to effectively end age-related hair loss, wrinkled skin and reduced energy. And he hopes to have products on the market in 5 years.

A new startup out of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Yuva Biosciences, is essentially the result of Keshav Singhs attempt to help chemotherapy patients re-grow the hair they lose as a result of the cancer treatment. But what he found could help everyone.

Cropped composite image of a woman when she was young and old

Yuvawhich means youth in Hindihopes to tap into the multi-billion-dollar hair loss prevention and anti-aging skincare market with cosmeceuticals, science-based cosmetics and pharmaceuticals based on its founders research into mitochondrial DNAthe tiny part of cells that produce 90 percent of the chemical energy they need to survive.

Singh said along with causing skin to age and hair to fall out, mitochondrial dysfunction can drive age-related diseases. A depletion of the DNA in mitochondria is also implicated in human mitochondrial diseases, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, age-associated neurological disorders and cancer.

Last year, Singh and his colleagues at UAB reversed wrinkles and restored hair growth in mice. The team triggered a gene mutation that caused mitochondrial dysfunction in mice, causing them to develop wrinkled skin and lose their hair. The UAB researchers discovered that turning off that mutation restored the mice to normal appearance making them indistinguishable from healthy mice of the same age. In effect, when the mitochondrial function was restored, the mice regained smooth skin and thick fur.

The mouse in the center photo shows aging-associated skin wrinkles and hair loss after two months of ... [+] mitochondrial DNA depletion. That same mouse, right, shows reversal of wrinkles and hair loss one month later, after mitochondrial DNA replication was resumed. The mouse on the left is a normal control, for comparison.

Singh along with Bhupendra Singh, Trenton R. Schoeb and Prachi Bajpai, UAB Department of Genetics; and Andrzej Slominski, UAB Department of Dermatology shared their results in apaperin July 2018, Reversing wrinkled skin and hair loss in mice by restoring mitochondrial function, in the journal Cell Death and Disease. The work was supported by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants.

Now in addition to his duties as a senior scientist in the Cancer Cell Biology Program and director of the Cancer Genetics Program at the ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB, Singh will serve as chief scientific advisor for Yuva Biosciences.

Keshav Singh, Ph.D., cancer geneticist and chief scientific advisor for Yuva Biosciences

The founding editor-in-chief of Elseviers Mitochondrion journal, Singh said scientists already knew that humans age as mitochondrial DNA content and mitochondrial function decline. He said the trick is to find a way to restore that content and function. And theyve already done that in mice. Now they want to transfer those studies and hopefully similar results to human trials.

Our plan is to look for two things, Singh said. We want to identify natural products which can enhance mitochondrial function. We have already identified at least one of these natural products that enhances mitochondrial function and also seems to prevent hair loss and wrinkles. Secondly, we want to re-purpose drugs that are already FDA-approved.

Singh said the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already has a library of thousands of FDA-approved compoundsdrugs for everything from diabetes to Alzheimers disease. We want to test them to see which ones might enhance mitochondrial function and even enhance energy, he said, adding that researchers work last year at UAB allowed us to develop a system where we can use different compounds that could enhance mitochondrial function.

Singh said the first of Yuvas products will likely be a topical therapy to halt wrinkles and hair loss and perhaps restore damage already done.

Yuva Biosciences plans to prevent or undo many of the effects of aging, which is why we like to say our goal is to provide Youthfulness for LifeTM, Singh said. Currently, we are aiming to develop productsto help people look and feel younger. Ourlong-term plan is to increase health span by addressing diseases associated with aging.

With the help of Greg Schmergel, a Boston-based serial entrepreneur, who will serve as chairman of Yuva Biosciences, Singh will occupy lab space at Innovation Depot, Inc. The Depot is a 140,000-square-foot office, lab and co-working startup space for technology companies located near UAB in Birmingham, Alabama. Yuva plans to hire two additional employees early next year.

Schmergel brings more than 25 years of experience in launching multiple high-tech ventures and leading a Massachusetts-based nanotechnology company, Nantero Inc., where he is the co-founder and CEO. A former senior vice president of corporate strategy for About, Inc., Schmergel also serves on the Board of Trustees of Lahey Hospital & Medical Centera, a physician-led nonprofit teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) based in Burlington, Massachusetts.

In a statement, Schmergel said Yuva is committed to building the company in Birmingham, where well have access to resources like the world-class researchers and facilities at UAB, the startup-focused amenities at Innovation Depot, and the rising regional entrepreneurial network.

Scientists Robert K. Naviaux, MD. Ph.D. and Matt R. Kaeberlein, Ph.D. will serve on the Yuva Biosciences Advisory Board. Kaeberlein specializes in aging and is past president of the American Aging Association, and professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Washington (UW), in Seattle. Naviaux specializes in mitochondrial and metabolic medicine and is a professor of Genetics at the University of California San Diego (UCSD).

Singh said there is no telling how far Yuva could go in aging research, though there is much testing yet to be done. We have discovered that mitochondria, which are the powerhouse of the cell, are the reversible regulator of wrinkles and hair loss, Singh said. The potential is huge as everyone develops wrinkles and most of us lose hair. So, any agent or drug which can slow down or reverse that will have a major impact.

Singh wouldnt speculate on whether manipulating mitochondrial DNA could cause all human organs and systems to regenerate and whether it would reverse aging in themfor example the human brain and any implications his research could have on dementia. And although little change was seen in other organs when the mutation was induced, he did hint that there is indeed great potential for further disease research.
