The ultimate gift, in the wake of a tragedy – Crow River Media

The Falling family Dustin, Morgan and Michelle received a memorial stone from Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato hockey families following the death of Dylan Falling in a late June car crash.

Dustin Falling has taken pride in passing along life lessons to his children. Among the most important was the significance of being an organ donor.

I always said, the Fallings are a donor family, Dustin explained recently during a nearly two-hour conversation that was filled with a mixture of both tears and laughter at a Litchfield restaurant. I asked (my son) Dylan when he was getting his permit if he was going to be a donor, because I feel strongly about it, but I told him its ultimately up to him.

Ill never forget when he filled out the application at the licensing department. They said, Are you going to be a donor? In a loud voice, he said yes, then looked at me and smiled. He was proud of it, and that was really cool.

Little did Falling realize that the importance of organ donation would soon strike his family under the dark cloud of unthinkable tragedy.

Every parents nightmare

The night of Friday, June 5, was nothing out of the ordinary for Dustin and Michelle Falling. Their children, Dylan and Morgan, were out with friends. That led to a quiet dinner on their patio for the couple, who started dating at Litchfield High School before eventually getting married in 1998.

After dinner, Dustin checked the Facebook app on his cellphone, a routine occurrence for the owner of LifeStyle Homes in Litchfield. He saw a post from a friend mentioning a major car crash near Turcks Trees on State Highway 24 that involved a heavy ambulance presence along with a helicopter.

Dustin knew 16-year-old Dylan, was on his way to pick up his best friend, Danny Winky Estrada, who lives in the Forest City area, for a trip to St. Cloud.

Dustin uses a Live 360 app on his phone to track the location of his children, for safety purposes. Dylans location wasnt moving.

I told Michelle, lets not jump to conclusions yet because maybe theyre waiting for the accident to clear, Dustin said.

At 6:17 p.m., Dustin sent a text message to Dylans phone: R U by Turcks Trees? No response. Another text followed: R U by Turcks Trees? Silence. Two more texts with the same message followed, again with no response.

Dustin then called several times with no answer. Meanwhile, Michelle called Winkys mother, Becky. She tried calling her son, who also didnt answer.

Becky said he always answers her calls, so then we started freaking out, Dustin said. We hopped in the truck and hauling (butt) toward to scene.

A few miles from the scene, Dustin received a call from one of Dylans friends. He was crying and said he heard from someone who had driven past the accident that there was a silver Chevy Cruze in the ditch a match for Dylans car.

When we got on site, the helicopter was in the middle of the road and Dylan was already in it, Dustin said. Winky was on a stretcher. I was able to talk to him and made sure he was OK. Dave Lecher, my service guy, was on scene with the Rescue Squad. He said, Im not a doctor, but he looked really good.

He had a little blood from his ear and he was moaning, but he wasnt responsive. On the outside, we didnt see a scratch on him. But, I didnt have a good feeling. Thats the way I am. If he pulled through, I wouldve said I honesty didnt think he wouldve made it. When they go in a helicopter, I just knew it wasnt good.

Anxious days

Dustin and Michelle didnt get to see Dylan until Saturday morning, as he spent most of the night in surgery. Due to COVID-19 regulations, Dustin and Michelle were the only people allowed to see him.

On Sunday, with the help of a compassionate nursing staff, they finagled a way to get Morgan, 14, into the room to see her brother. The family talked to Dylan, held his hand and told stories. He didnt respond, but everyone believes Dylan heard them.

In those couple days, I spent I dont know how many hours Facetiming friends and family to see and talk to him because they couldnt get to see him, Dustin said. So everybody who I could remember reached out to me got to tell stories to him.

The doctor told Dustin and Michelle that it takes 48 to 72 hours to determine the severity of brain damage, but Dustin couldnt get rid of the feeling that his son was likely not going to recover.

Youd get some encouraging words from family members saying theyre young and strong and they can pull through this, but in the back of my mind I just didnt know, Dustin said.

There was a moment of optimism when a nurse administered a test to determine consciousness, and Dylans hand moved slightly and one of his arms twitched.

I had this ounce of hope. I didnt want to think too far ahead and get hopes up, Dustin said. We went to lunch and when we came back they said that wasnt a response to anything and his brain was posturing, which means its basically shutting down and his body was just reacting to that.

We kind of knew at that point. On Sunday, they said they needed to talk to us and told us hes brain dead. Morgan came in and we told her. I asked over and over again if there was any percent chance he could come through, and they said zero. Morgan couldnt accept that. She kept saying, go ask again.

The Falling family daughter Morgan, Michelle and Dustin, and son Dylan posed for a photo last year while on a hike near Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Michelle had recently mentioned how well things were going with the family and that Dylan and Morgan were getting along wonderfully. Dylan would drive her around town and they would hang out in each others rooms.

He had turned a corner from being a kid into a young man who was really good, Dustin said.

When the reality hit that Dylan wasnt coming back, it was Morgan who pulled the family together.

Amazingly enough, Morgan, for a 14-year-old, was amazing, Dustin said. She said we need to do better as a family. She told us we are great parents and they dont give us enough credit. She really spearheaded how we were moving forward. It was truly amazing.

Dylans drive-in visitation on Tuesday, June 16, was attended by hundreds of friends and family at St. Philips Catholic Church in Litchfield. His remains were put to rest a day later after a private funeral that was streamed online for thousands to view.

Organs find a home

Lifesource is a company that specializes in finding recipients for suitable organs. On June 25, the Fallings received a letter from the company stating the following:

Please accept our heartfelt sympathy on the death of your son, Dylan. Our hope is that you can find peace in remembrances of special times together and the warmth of lasting memories. Also, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for your support of Dylans decision to help others through donation. His compassion has given others a second chance on the quality of life.

Dylans legacy lives on in a 68-year-old man, who received his heart in a transplant procedure in Minnesota. A 34-year-old woman received his right kidney in a procedure in Minnesota. A 45-year-old now has Dylans left kidney after a procedure in North Dakota, and a 55-year-old man received his liver in a procedure in California.

In addition, his connective tissue, bone, vessels veins and skin will be donated to dozens of recipients.

The organ harvesting also had a personal touch as Tim Langemo, a longtime family friend and Dustins hockey teammate for Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, oversaw the procedure. Langemo is a certified registered nurse anesthetist at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Ironically, Dustin knows firsthand the importance of organ donation. He received a kidney from his brother Kyle in a procedure in February 2019. Dustin says he feels better than ever and has resumed a healthy lifestyle that includes frequent post-dinner bike rides past the St. Philips Cemetery to chat with and say goodnight to Dylan.

Foundation in the works

Soon after word spread of the accident, a GoFundMe page In Honor & Memory of Dylan Falling was launched and has since raised more than $20,000. Donations are still being accepted on that site, and plans are in motion to form a foundation to honor Dylans legacy called The1Foundation.

Dustin and Dylan Falling shared a common love for hockey, both playing goalie in the Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato system. In one of Dustin's proudest moments, they celebrated together on the ice when the LDC PeeWee A hockey team qualified for the state tournament, a season in which Dylan started every game in goal.

Dylan, like his father, was a goalie for LDC. His jersey number 1 will be retired by the hockey program until he was set to graduate in 2022.

Dustin coached Dylan throughout the youth ranks. Dylan helped lead LDCs PeeWee team to the state tournament where they lost three one-goal games a rare feat for the program at the youth level.

The foundation will be set up to raise money for several causes not just hockey. Some proceeds will go to help young goalies afford summer camps, something Dustin said Glenn and Ethel Young made possible for him as a kid. Additional proceeds are planned for other youth sports, like buying football cleats for families who cant afford them.

Dustin and Michelle also plan to help food shelves in the Litchfield, Dassel and Cokato communities, along with a scholarship to School of St. Philip, which Dylan attended until moving on to middle school.

In addition, Michelle is helping take the lead on directing funds to help teens who need financial assistance for mental health issues.

Dylan went through some mental health bumps throughout his life and benefitted from working with the local area mental health services from both Woodland Centers and Pathways Therapeutic in Litchfield, and I know there are so many great kids like Dylan who just need someone else to talk to about how to cope and realize challenges are part of the human experience, Michelle said.

There is still a stigma out there related to youth and mental health and maybe we can help more parents who aren't equipped to help their children process what is going on in their minds, she said. We know teens don't always listen to or take their parents advice and need someone outside to talk to and trust. There are so many opportunities we will have to financially support our community. It's exciting to start dreaming and planning how we will be able to give back to the community to help others and live out our sons life legacy.'

Daily life is vastly different at home for the Fallings. The cards and well-wishes have been read, and both Dustin and Michelle occupy their time with work, which Dustin said is a welcome distraction. Theyve also had gatherings with Dylans friends at family property on Lake Stella.

Dustin said he and Michelle dont for a second regret allowing Dylan to go to St. Cloud that night, stressing that would be hypocritical since they used to hound him to stop playing Fortnite in his room and encourage him to go out and drive around with friends.

The coping and grieving process is constant. Dylan wrote a speech about a person he admired for one of his classes at Litchfield High School. The speech was about his father. Michelle asked if Dustin wanted to see the speech on Fathers Day, which was four days after the funeral.

Dustin wasnt ready for that, simply saying this:

Every milestone will be hard. The thing Ill miss more than anything is we were starting to hang out more as father-son, and as a friend and not just a father.

If there is one thing that many people wish for regardless of age is to be healthy. Whether you are a teenager or a senior citizen, being healthy is always a priority. Especially with the state of the world now, with the coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc all over the world, we all want to make sure that we are able to come out of this alive and well.

So how do you go about shifting to a healthier lifestyle? Fortunately, there are many things you can do to assure that you will live longer. Science has also made many signs of progress in both technology and pharmaceuticals. This way we can get more medicine and other technology to help people have a better quality of life.

You can check out GSHS.org for more information on the latest news and discoveries that have to do with health and science.

Aside from relying on the latest discoveries from science, you can also do these tried and tested ways of living a healthier lifestyle.

One of the things you need to watch is what you eat. If you love eating fast food and junk food then it is time to stop. These are full of unhealthy fats that will slowly poison your body. The key is to eat a balanced diet. There is nothing wrong with having cheat days when you eat a slice of chocolate cake or a handful of French fries. But if this is your usual diet, you will soon feel the effects on your body. Try to eat more fruits and vegetables. Include lean proteins and healthy fats into your diet. You dont have to stick to bland foods. Learn how to cook so you can create your own meals instead of relying on takeout and deliveries.

We cannot stress enough the importance of exercise. Regular exercise has so many benefits, including weight loss, stronger muscles, and increased energy levels. Not to mention that it can make you feel happier! Now, if it feels like a burden to work out, try to look for an exercise that you will enjoy. This can be taking a simple 30-minute walk four times a week. Or perhaps clearing the living room and dancing to your favorite dance tracks. Gardening can also be a great form of exercise. Meanwhile, yoga is not only good for the body but also the mind.

Sleep is your bodys way of healing itself. That is why it is important that you dont just get enough sleep, but that you have quality sleep. Even though you had eight hours of sleep but you keep waking up during the night, it is still not enough. Try to invest in blackout curtains, comfortable bed, and sheets so that can really feel relaxed when you are sleeping. You can also refrain from checking your phone at least half an hour before sleeping so that your brain will not be stimulated.

While occasional alcohol drinking may be acceptable as some say that wine can actually be good for your health, the same cannot be said for smoking. There are no health benefits to smoking, and if you are one, it would be best to quit now. There are too many risks involved. It is like slowly poisoning your body and after many years you will suffer from diseases like lung cancer or COPD. These vices must be given up if you truly want to adopt a healthier lifestyle. There are treatment centers that can help you in your journey if you are having a hard time getting started.

A healthy lifestyle does not just focus on your physical body. Your mental health just as important as your physical health so you should not neglect it. For many people, their unmanaged stress can actually result in an actual physical illness. Its important to not compromise your mental health. So how do you this? You need to recognize what causes your stress, and, if possible, avoid those kinds of situations. If it is not possible, there are still things you can do. You can look for an activity that you can do to take the stress away. It can be something as simple as getting a massage once in a while or perhaps reading a good book. You can also seek professional help if you are finding that things have become too overwhelming for you to manage.

Why Harry Shum Jr. Doesnt Give 100 Percent in the Gym – Yahoo Lifestyle

From Men's Health

Harry Shum Jr. is a man of many hats. He's known for his acting on Glee, dancing in Step Up, and taking on lead roles in films like All My Life. So, its no surprise that he has to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to keep up with it all. Mens Health recently caught up with the Costa Rican-born actor in his Los Angeles home to get an inside look at his gym and fridge to discuss how he stays in shapeand why restraint is key for his sanity.

The 38-year-old does pretty well with keeping a clean diet. Some essentials you can find in his fridge: oat milk, berries, coconut milk yogurt alternative, Daves Killer Bread, and vegan kimchi. Although, he does admit that he has some strange (but still relatively healthy) eating habitslike snacking on spring mix salad just like a bag of chips, eating frozen bananas for the ice cream-like texture, or turning to sardines for comfort food.

I would never say no to any food unless theres so many preservatives and its just like fake food, said Shum. I like to eat real food as long as its good and done in moderation.

When it comes to staying fit, Shum works out about four or five times a week in what he calls his sanctuary of a home gym, always starting off with 10 minutes of meditation before his strength training. Youll only catch him doing an intense workout about once or twice a week though. On those days, hes working up a sweat until he literally cant lift anymore.

When I was in my twenties and even my teens, I worked out way too hard and worked out to impress, he said. Now, Im just doing it for myself and my health and not pushing myself 100% because nobodys got time for that.

Shum's philosophy is: He works out to eat. He makes sure to get in his reps of cardio so he can order his favorite burger at In-N-Out. Shum has a personal trainer when working for movies or TV shows but takes their tips and incorporates them when he's grinding in the gym on his own to ensure his body is always ready for anything.

Story continues

As an actor, you might have to get super skinny or gain a lot of weight," he said. "So, maintaining and just keeping a point where I can go one way or the other is my goal right now.

Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Sayville With 4 Proven Ways to Live a Healthier Life

The key to a healthy lifestyle is maintaining a routine that's realistic to keep up with. Many fad and crashdiets can be successful in the short term, but they are unmanageable when it comes to keeping it upover the long haul. Many times, people end up worse off than they were before they started their newexperiment.

Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Sayville has four proven ways to live a healthier life that can be easilyfollowed and managedand where occasionally straying from the plan won't derail your goals.

1. Intermittent FastingFasting and cleanses are popular ways to lose weight, but they can be difficult to see through. Instead, try intermittent fasting. This is where you want to limit your eating to a certain amount of time eachdaythe goal is eight hours, but you can start with 12 hours. This will create a fasting period of 12 to 16hours where your body can recover and even strengthen your immune system. A nice byproduct ofintermittent fasting is that it curbs late-night snacking!

2. Take Breaks at WorkTaking a few-minute break every hour at work can keep you energize both physically andmentallyespecially if you have a job where you're sitting at a computer for most of the day. Steppingaway from your desk gives your brain a break and will be more efficient in the long run. If you're feelingsleepy or having trouble concentrating, stop in the bathroom, run your hands under cold water, thensplash some on your face.

3. Regular ExerciseRegular exercise will decrease the risk of most major health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and heartdisease. Start with 15-30 minutes, three days a week, and work your way up to at least 150 minutes perweek, which can be 20-30 minutes for six or seven days a week.

4. Spend Time With Loved OnesA majority of seniors in the United States report at least some loneliness and isolation, and researchershave found that those feelings can lead to a whole host of general health problems, and may eventrigger Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Feeling connected to others, having fun, loving, andlaughing improve the quality of life and adds a sense of purpose.

Understanding the Science of Memory Now. Powered by – Now. Powered by Northrop Grumman.

Neuroscientists understand a great deal about the brain, and new studies continue to unlock the science of memory. How does memory form in the brain, and what exactly happens when we recall something?

Memories arent locked away in one particular place in the brain. Different areas of the brain are responsible for various aspects of memory, according to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The amygdala is associated with emotional responses, such as fear. The striatum is associated with memories of skills, and the hippocampus and temporal lobes are both essential for forming and recalling memories.

When you experience an event, it doesnt just instantly become a memory that is stored in your brain forever. There are three main steps to forming memories.

First, memories are encoded in your brain. This happens at synapses, which are the connections between brain cells called neurons.

These connections become either stronger or weaker, says Christine Smith, Ph.D. She is a memory researcher at Research Service, Veterans Affairs, San Diego Healthcare System and teaches psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego.

She adds, The cells that are activated at the time that the event happens are the same ones that will be involved later when you remember that event.

The connections between neurons start out weak and become stronger the more often you are exposed to the event. This explains why, for example, you still remember your childhood phone number but not the name of a person you met once.

Dr. Smith explains that when you recall a memory, the brain cells that were active when the memory was formed are reactivated. If the memory is a few years old, a structure called the hippocampus is involved with reactivating those cells and pulling the memory together so that you experience that as a remembered event.

Of course, we dont remember every moment of our lives. We simply dont need to access all that excessive information. Instead, we tend to remember the important things, or those memories that we have accessed the most. Sometimes a cue can help reactivate dusty old memories, such as when a specific scent reminds you of a person, place or time in your life.

As time passes, the connections become solidified or consolidated. The synapses for memories you retrieve often become stronger and therefore part of your long-term memories. Other connections between neurons weaken with time, causing you to forget those moments.

According to RIT, this normal process of losing memory over time is called memory trace decay. Sometimes, forgetting is due to encoding failure, which is when you dont process the information and therefore never had the memory in the first place. Lastly, there is a type of forgetting called interference theory, which is when other information interferes with your ability to retain new memories. For example, when you know the word for chair in one language, it can block your ability to remember the word for chair in another language.

There are two main types of memory: short-term and long-term. But within long-term memory, there are two sub-categories: explicit, or conscious memory, and implicit, or unconscious memory.

Your working memory, or short-term memory, can only hold a few items and lasts for about 20 seconds, according to RIT. Its helpful for when we need to hold information in our head for just a moment, and then can move on to other more important things. For example, if someone gives you an instruction, such as signing a piece of paper, you only need to remember that bit of information long enough to do the action that is required. After that, its useless. According to the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), working memory is one of the best predictors of general intelligence, as measured by standard psychological tests.

If you practice enough, such as memorizing the spelling of words, or frequently discussing a favorite event, short-term memories can be strengthened enough to become long-term memories, through the consolidation process that we previously described.

Most of the memories that we think of in a conversational sense are part of your long-term memory. When you remember something that happened in your life, that is a type of long-term memory called an explicit memory. According to QBI, explicit memories can be episodic, such as when you remember a favorite childhood birthday party, or semantic, relating to facts or general knowledge.

Implicit, or unconscious memories are less obvious, but they are embedded in our minds as part of our long-term memory bank. They can be procedural, such as motor skills that you wont forget once youve learned them, like riding a bike or tying your shoes. Another type of implicit memory is caused by priming, when exposure to one stimulus influences your brains response to another, according to QBI. These less obvious memories can influence our habits or phobias.

We arent always aware when were operating based on these prior memories, says Dr. Smith. So we think of them as being predispositions about our personality.

She explains that events that happen to you can become part of your memory repository, although you may not have conscious access to them. So youre doing all sorts of behaviors during the day that you probably dont even realize are a reflection of memory, she says.

Weve explained how memory is supposed to work, but there are many issues that can cause memory loss. Amnesia, for example, can be caused by brain trauma such as a head injury, a stroke or tumor, or chronic alcoholism, according to National Geographic.

A traumatic experience can damage the communication between the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex, according to Scientific American. This is evident, for example, when you are safe but your bodys fear response is triggered by a cue that reminds you of a previously dangerous experience, such as people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Memory loss is a normal part of aging, but some people experience severe memory loss with various types of dementia, such as Alzheimers disease. Its a degenerative disease in which brain cells stop working. Dr. Smith explains that in the early stages of the disease, the memory structures of the brain are affected. At first, patients complain of memory loss. Then as the disease progresses, it also damages other parts of the brain, which causes cognitive problems, attention issues and executive functions, such as loss of language.

By the time someone is diagnosed with Alzheimers disease their brain is very badly damaged, she says. You could show a healthy brain scan and Alzheimers brain scan to a child and they would see a difference. Its very apparent.

When considering what are the four types of memory, we cant assume every person has each type. Some brain disorders affect one part of the memory but not another. For example, Smith describes that someone can have a lesion in the brain that affects their conscious memories, so they have trouble learning new things. But their unconscious memories are fine.

She also describes a condition called cortical blindness, in which people can see and have avoidance reflexes, but they cant recognize what theyre looking at, so they are effectively blind.

They cant see, but if you were to throw a ball at them, they would be able to dodge it.

There is no cure for Alzheimers disease yet. However, people who are prone to memory loss can delay it by living healthy lifestyles. Some people practice brain exercises to fend off memory loss. Smith suggests that there are more interesting ways to keep your brain strong, backed by the science of memory. She advises her patients to focus on a healthy lifestyle with cardiovascular exercise, a nutritious diet and enough sleep. People with higher education have a lower risk of Alzheimers disease, she says, and the idea is that education may build up the brain and delay the onset of the disease. Plus, any kind of personal interaction helps stimulate the br
ain. Getting out into the world, having conversations and trying new things are all excellent brain exercises.

You have more cognitive reserves so you can take more hits before you fail, she says.

According to research cited by Healthline, "proteincauses the largest rise in TEF (thermic effect of food). It increases your metabolic rate by 1530%, compared to 510% for carbs and 03% for fats." As Healthline explains, the "thermic effect of food caused by the extra calories required to digest, absorb and process the nutrients in your meal."

Since digesting protein takes more effort from your body, by eating more of it you will basically work out using your metabolic system (we might be exaggerating here). Protein is also essential for muscle repair and recovery, so if you are actively working out, it is recommended to take between 1.6-2 grams of protein per body kilogram per day.

You should source protein from a variety of food stuff like lean meat, nuts, green veg and eggs. Supplementing protein is also popular among athletes: protein powder shakes are probably the most convenient way to get your protein fix on the go but you can also have protein bars or jerky as well as post workout snack.

This technique may have a very complicated-sounding name Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis and a vaguely annoying acronym NEAT but it's actually very simple. NEAT means adjusting how you live your day-to-day life, in order to be more active. You know when exercise experts say, 'Take the stairs, not the lift' and you think, 'Oh yes, good idea,' but then you don't do it? Well NEAT is actually doing things like that.

Like a lot of great ways to get fit, NEAT is perfectly straightforward in principle, but it does require some effort on your part. However the great thing about NEAT for many people is that it specifically does not involve going to the gym or setting aside time for exercise. Although of course, it can also be used as one component of a healthy lifestyle, alongside gym, running, cycling, watching Joe Wicks, etc.

Learn about using NEAT to speed up your metabolism

Caffeine found in coffee and teas can boost metabolism significantly. Not everyone reacts to caffeine the same way and it is also recommended not to drink too many cups of coffee/caffeinated beverages in a day. Green tea has a lower caffeine content so combining coffee and green tea consumption can have better results.

Drinking more water can also improve metabolism: combine increased water consumption with more fibrous food for the best results.

Self-help for atrial fibrillation – Harvard Health – Harvard Health

Diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors are known to affect your risk of heart disease. The major risk factors for heart disease, as well as the condition itself, are all closely linked to the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. Can a heart-healthy lifestyle prevent atrial fibrillation? Can it reduce symptoms?

There's preliminary evidence that managing the risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease may improve the long-term outlook for people with atri-al fibrillation. On a practical level, that could mean fewer episodes of a-fib and improvements in symptomsin short, a better quality of life for you.

The ability of lifestyle change to reduce the burden of atrial fibrillation remains an active area of research. In the meantime, take steps to live a healthy and active lifestyle, in addition to medication and other standard a-fib treatments:

Make sure to also ask your doctor or pharmacist about any new medica-tions, including over-the-counter remedies and herbal supplements. Sometimes these can interact in a harmful way with warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants, or rhythm-controlling drugs.

Although your ability to prevent or treat atrial fibrillation with a healthy lifestyle has limits, most people are able to control bothersome symptoms long-term with medication, procedures, or both. That said, some people run out of safe or effective options, in which case the a-fib will become permanent. But with proper anticoagulation, you can still minimize your risk of stroke, the most dangerous complication of this abnormal heart rhythm.

Nestl To Bring Healthy Nutrition for Kids in Remote Georgia – The FINANCIAL

The worlds largest food and beverage company Nestl plans to expand its business and bring childrens nutrition productions to various, difficult-to-reach mountain regions in Georgia in 2020.

In addition, the brand plans to optimize its portfolio by replacing products less in demand with new flavors.

For example, we will replace the 90-gram soft-packed fruit juices of Gerber with fruit jams of the Nestl brand. Of course, we are not canceling the Gerber brand. We will keep Gerbers products in glass jar packaging, said Giorgi Kakauridze from Nestl.

Kakauridze said that this year, Nestl will introduce new porridges on the Georgian market under the brand of Shagayka, which are intended for children over one year of age.

In recognition of Nestls leadership in nutrition, health and wellness, the brand has become a Golden Brand winner in Georgia, named by customers and over 200 experts as their favorite childrens nutrition brand in Georgia.

Being named the leading brand in Georgia in the field of childrens nutrition is a big motivation for our team, which will encourage us to bring new products to Georgia and develop further in the country, said Kakauridze.

High quality, healthy and safe products, affordable prices and a team of professionals. This is what has made for Nestls success, he added.

Nestl offers Georgian customers around 90 different products that are available at almost all major supermarkets, hypermarkets and pharmacy networks in the country.

The first product Nestl brought to Georgia was milk flour and not milk powder as we call it today.

In general, year-on-year demand for Nestl products has been increasing in Georgia by about 25%.

This is how everything started more than 150 years ago when our founder Henri Nestl brought infant formula (Nestl's Milk Food) to the market that saved a childs life. We have continued his work by launching a programme called Nestl Healthy Kids through which we support parents as they raise healthy children.

The goal of the programme is to create and raise awareness regarding good nutritional practices, cooking methods to enhance the nutritional content of foods and physical fitness among students in village schools.

Our ambition is to speak about healthy lifestyle choices to 50 million children by 2030.

The programme has been running in Georgia since 2011 and aims to raise the quality of nutrition, health and well-being of school-age children through educational activities, and inform teachers, children and parents about the basic principles of a healthy lifestyle, especially the importance of healthy nutrition and physical activity, which is extremely important for the health and development of a child.

The programme is implemented in the form of free, fun lessons, conversations, quizzes, exercises and various events in second and third grade of elementary school.

As of today the programme in Georgia covers 37 schools and 7,560 pupils.

The programme has been implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Georgia.

What the Bella twins typically eat in a day – Nicki Swift

Nikki and Brie Bella's diet is simple: They stick to fruit, oatmeal, and eggs in the morning, and for lunch, they eat fish or chicken with some vegetables and brown rice, per Workout Info Guru. The pair noshes on fruit or sips a protein shake for a snack before they eat veggies, fish, or meat for dinner. However, the sisters made it clear that there are certain things they avoid. "I don't eat red meat," Nikki told Us Weekly in 2017. "And if I want carbs, I usually have them in the morning."

Meanwhile, Brie and her husband, Daniel Bryan, have been vegetarians "for years," as she told People in 2018. "For dinner, I'm always making something," Brie told Us Weekly. "Last night it was cauliflower wings!" Since Brie doesn't eat meat, she is "very into farm-to-table" and getting "everything from your local farmers," she told Who Say (via Sportskeeda). "I stay away from fried and processed food."

Nikki and Brie's motto is "everything in moderation" when it comes to their "healthy lifestyle," Brie told Muscle & Fitness magazine. "We never want to deprive ourselves, and we think that is the way to be in shape," she divulged. "We aren't big on diets. If you create a healthy lifestyle, then you aren't sacrificing anything."

Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo clearly lives a healthy lifestyle, considering his excellent physique, so he's promoting Herbalife.

When it comes to playing professional sports for a living, athletes have to keep their bodies in the best shape possible. Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo clearly lives a healthy lifestyle, considering his excellent physique.

The UEFAs Mens Player Of The Year 2016/2017 winner, knows that sports' products help any player perform at their best. For Ronaldo, Herbalife is the pathway to success.

At just 35-years-old, Cristiano Ronaldo has accomplished a lot as an international sports star. Not only is he a championship-winning magnet, but he has a hand in just about every facet of the fashion industry, including a mens underwear and perfume line. Perhaps thats why the Portuguese football player has an established net worth of approximately $460 million, making him the second richest sports-star in the world.

Not to mention, the mens sports enhancement company Herbalife is a big supporter of Ronaldos career. The sports star has been a long-time ambassador of the brand name since 2013 and will remain so until 2021. While Herbalife has previously described their partnership with Ronaldo as special, the star has even credited the company for playing a major role in his sports career. Herbalife Nutrition understands how critical nutrition is for my performance and I enjoyed working with their scientific team to develop CR7 Drive, Ronaldo said previously, referring to a sports drink helped energize athletes during workouts. Sounds like the CR7 Drive was Ronaldos go-to drink. No wonder he loves his partnership with Herbalife.

A 360-degree approach to getting the perfect glowy skin this summer – Emirates Woman

The glow

When it comes to supplements, are we too reliant on these miracle capsules for skin-deep beauty? We look at a 360-degree approach instead.

Over the years of curating our routines and discovering hero products that deliver exactly what we need, one thing we all have come to realise is that beauty isnt only skin-deep. There has been an evolution of products on the market that promise to nourish our complexion, and they are not just the formulas you apply on the surface. Many well-known brands have extended their skincare lines beyond topical products by introducing supplements that help tackle concerns from the inside. See it as a 360-degree approach to your daily routine.

The glow heroes:C.E.O. Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil Dhs155 Sunday Riley at Sephora; Charlottes Magic Serum Crystal Elixir Dhs285 Charlotte Tilbury

Some specialists believe that topical products only address around 20 per cent of skin issues, which naturally forces us to look to supplements as well as personal habits. Skin is the largest organ of our body. It is meant to protect us, but it is also a mirror a mirror that reflects our health and the faults in the body, Zuzana Hrdinova, a Lifestyle Consultant and Health Coach, explains.

Despite the nutritional supplement market being a multi-billion-dollar industry, the data to support the use of most of these products is poor. There is very little evidence that any supplement or a multivitamin can reverse the course of a disease or play a role in our skin health, she adds.

Shirley DSouza, a Certified Ketogenic & Primal living coach, agrees that there are a lot of decoy supplements out there in the market, especially when claiming a whole list of benefits, but does believe some supplements can be beneficial in replenishing the nutrients that are lost through the agricultural process.

The glow heroes:Integrative Beauty Dhs300 SkinFusion; Skin Food + Prebiotic Dhs184 The Nue Co. at net-a-porter.com

Supplements may be useful for people who are unable to get adequate nutrition from diet alone, adds health coach, Sheetal Ramchandani. For example, it is recommended that vegans take a supplement of vitamin B12 since it isnt adequately available in plant foods and some specific conditions, like gastrointestinal issues that can affect nutrient absorption, call for more than high nutrition and require extra support that supplements can provide.

Zinc is one of the widely recommended supplements that support the immune system, while Omega 3 repairs the skin barrier. Iron can also be extremely beneficial, especially for those prone to eczema or psoriasis. But like with anything, seeking professional advice is the best way for you to know for sure that what you are taking is beneficial, as Hrdinova points out: If you take calcium, magnesium or zinc, but you are deficient in Vitamin D, you will not be absorbing those minerals and hence you will not see any results.

Vitamin C and E are emerging as skincare heroes among the beauty insiders as they are seen as powerful antioxidants. Collagen supplements are also on the rise. As we age, we produce less collagen that results in wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity. It is still hard to judge whether the collagen you ingest will have the same properties when it reaches your skin as the digestion process breaks it down, so perhaps its more beneficial to look at products that encourage collagen production. Chicken soup, for example, is rich in amino acids which encourages our bodies to produce collagen. One big change I would add to a diet is bone broth chicken or beef which is full of collagen but more importantly full of electrolytes and has properties that help, our gut health a lot more. Our gut health is important as it is our main communication to the brain, hormones and nerves, DSouza reveals.

The glow heroes:Skinesis Stem Cell Collagen Activator Dhs685 Sarah Chapman at Harvey Nichols Dubai; Super Seed Supplement Dhs162 Votary

It appears that all of our supplement trails lead us back to something we can easily change our diet. There are certain nutrients that help us to get the look of glowing, healthier skin and slow down the ageing process, Hrdinova explains. Essentials are vitamin C, E, A, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, copper, zinc, selenium, but also vitamin B and iron. All these nutrients are available in a balanced diet. My advice for anybody who wants to have smoother and clearer complexion and glossy, silky hair is to eat healthy food including lots of fruit and vegetables, drink sufficient water, exercise frequently, get out in the fresh air, get proper rest and learn to manage your stress levels.

DSouza also champions a healthy lifestyle, promoting a balanced diet and cutting down on junk food. Cucumber and kale added to our diet has properties of naturally hydrating our skin, the nutrient silica is a trace mineral found in high levels inside cucumbers, she explains. Silica contributes to the growth and maintenance of connective tissue throughout your body.

We need to limit eating things in plastic or packets with long shelf life and eat more natural basic ingredients, she continues. If you cannot pronounce the additive or do not know the added preservative do not eat it.

Hrdinova echoes this saying, Excessive consumption of refined sugars and artificial sweetener and trans fats (fried food) can cause inflammation which may lead to a breakdown in collagen and elastin and have a negative impact on the skins strength and elasticity. Too much of caffeine from coffee or energy drinks have an impact on the hormonal levels in our body and may lead to breakouts of acne.

The only additional supplement DSouza would add for a glowing complexion is a probiotic at least with a minimum of 1 billion colony forming units and containing either genus Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium or Saccharomyces boulardii.

Looking at the busy skincare industry promising a miracle solution with every new launch, it is easy to become overwhelmed at the options that are before you. The bottom line, take a closer look at your diet, seek advice if you want to introduce supplements, and continue to enhance your skincare routine. A glowing and healthy complexion requires attention from all angles, especially if you want to achieve long-lasting results.

Great gran sheds HALF her body weight and reverses deadly type 2 diabetes – The Sun

A SHRINKING great-granny lost almost half her body weight afterditching her junk food habit.

Roberta Bellerby shed an impressive 8st with Slimming World after adoctor warned her that her diabetes was out of control.

6

The 59-year-old ditched her daily Jaffa Cakes and McDonalds learning to sprinkle stock cubes over vegetables to make them tastebetter.

She dropped from a whopping 25st, a dress size 30, to a trim 12st4lbs, a size 12-14, and now says shes never felt better.

Ive reversed my type 2 diabetes completely, she says. I dont takeany medication now at all.

Its my 60th birthday in July and I feel healthier than ever. If I canswap Jaffa Cakes for Brussels sprouts, then anyone can!

6

Roberta, from Bangor in Northern Ireland, first started piling on thepounds when she quit smoking in 2004, aged 44.

Whenever she felt the urge to light up a fag, she reached for a snackinstead.

I decided enoughs enough and went cold turkey, she explains. Iwas on 60-a-day, puffing away like a chimney, lighting one off theend of the other.

But they were starting to make me wheeze so I flushed my last packof Barclays down the loo.

The toughest part was finding something to do with my hands. Soevery time I felt the urge to spark up, I popped a bag of cheese-and-onion crisps or opened a packet of Jaffa Cakes.

6

What is type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is the more common form of the disease accounting for between 85 and 95 per cent of all cases, according to Diabetes UK.

It develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body are unable to produce enough insulin.

It can also be triggered when the insulin that is produced doesnt work properly.

Typically, people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes from the age of40, butthere are some exceptions.

In people from southern Asia the disease can appear as early as 25.

And the condition is becoming more prevalent in children, teenagers of all ethnicities.

Experts suggest the rising rates of type 2 diabetes is due to the obesity epidemic a key cause of type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can be treated with drugs, and many people can reverse their condition by adopting a healthy lifestyle a healthy diet and exercise

Robertas husband Dessie, now 64, was delighted. Not to mentiontheir five kids and 12 grandkids.

But as her junk food habit grew, so did her waistline.

Id cooked healthy dinners when my kids were growing up, buttheyd all left home so I couldnt be bothered, she remembers.

I got up in the morning and headed straight to the local shop for sixsausage rolls in place of my usual pack of fags. And instead of chainsmoking, I ploughed through whole boxes of 12 Jaffa Cakes in onesitting.

In the afternoons I kept myself going with a crisp sandwich on whitebread. Then Id order a chippy tea or Chinese for dinner mushypeas were the closest I came to a vegetable.

By 2015 Roberta was tipping the scales at 25st.

At just 5ft 1ins, I was almost as wide as I was tall, and my 50GGboobs meant Id not seen my own feet for months, she laughs.

In April 2017 Dessie was diagnosed with heart failure and Robertawas told hed need constant care. She started feeding him healthiermeals and in the process lost 4st herself.

But the final straw didnt come until a visit to her consultant atBangor Hospital just before Christmas that year.

She remembers: Id been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes severalyears earlier but the tablets I was taking were no match for all thesugar I ate.

The doctor told me I going to have to start insulin injections. Shesaid they werent normally used for diabetes type 2 but I wasrunning out of options.

6

I was shocked because I hate needles. It was time to face facts. Myweight was shortening my life. I needed to go cold turkey on the junkfood just like Id done with the fags.

Roberta joined a branch of Slimming World in nearby Comber inFebruary 2018, telling the consultant Eleanor Clarke that she felt tooshy to talk in group.

I sat on a chair in the corner, arms folded, avoiding eye contact, she remembers.

In Asda that evening I stacked my trolley with fruitsand vegetables, steering clear of the temptations of the biscuit aisle.

6

I hated veg but Eleanor had told me to try sprinkling them with astock cube to make them taste better.

The following week Roberta had already lost 5lbs and after weigh-inshe found her voice, telling the other members about her junk foodban.

Each week my weight melted away and I began to feel like a newwoman, she smiles.

I couldnt wait to hop on the scales, celebrating each loss loudly with a lap of the room that left the other members in stitches.

And soon I loved my vegetables so much that I didnt need the stockcube sprinkle. In fact, I often curled up with a bowl of steamedBrussels sprouts as my late-night snack in front of the telly.

Roberta, who now also has three great-grandchildren, started takingher dog, Gizmo, for longer walks, then began running her groupsBody Magic programme to share her exercise tips, like dancing whiledoing the washing up or cleaning the windows.

After losing an incredible 8st, Robertas impressed diabetesconsultant took her off her medication completely.

AMA Position Statement on the Health and Wellbeing of Doctors and Medical Students

The AMA today released its revised Position Statement on the Health and Wellbeing of Doctors and Medical Students.

AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said that the health and welfare of doctors and medical students is an absolute priority for the AMA.

Dr Bartone said that the AMA has for many years provided leadership for the medical profession to collaboratively advance the processes that will enhance the physical and mental health of doctors and medical students, and improve the health and wellbeing of the entire profession.

Doctors and medical students face a range of pressures and stressors over the course of their training and career, and it is vital that we address these issues on an individual level and as a profession across the profession, Dr Bartone said.

The day-to-day pressures of being a doctor have touched us all, directly or indirectly, and they can have a profound and unfortunately tragic impact on either our own careers or the careers of our colleagues.

Sadly, there are still some instances in medical workplace culture that permit bullying and harassment and perpetuate the fear of reprisal.

The 2019 Medical Training Survey revealed that one in three trainees reported they had witnessed or experienced bullying or harassment. This is totally unacceptable, and must be eliminated from the workplace.

The revised and updated Position Statement on the Health and Wellbeing of Doctors and Medical Students 2020 identifies the actions that doctors can take at many levels to support the profession to promote good mental health and physical health, and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle for doctors throughout their medical training and medical careers.

It is vital we make sure appropriate support and resources are in place to help doctors and medical students with their own health, Dr Bartone said.

We must build on the great work that is already occurring. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in times of crisis like COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unique challenges for doctors to maintain their own psychosocial wellbeing while responding to the pandemic and its effect on the health of the broader community.

The revised Position Statement emphasises that consideration needs to be given to the level of work, stress, difficult clinical treatment decisions, and large numbers of ill patients that may impact the wellbeing of all frontline healthcare workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Clear, consistent, and timely communication and messaging from health authorities and employers to all healthcare workers should be a priority during this time to maintain wellbeing and reduce anxiety from misinformation. This will maintain a motivated and safe workforce during this period.

It is important that doctors look out for the health of their colleagues during this difficult and stressful time.

The AMAs subsidiary company, Doctors Health Services Pty Ltd (DrHS), funds a network of independent doctors health advisory services around the country that provide triage and referral services, and education and other support.

These are delivered with the support of the Medical Board of Australia. More information is available at http://www.drs4drs.com.au

More recently, Department of Health funding has facilitated the launch of a new DrHS telehealth service for doctors and medical students who are struggling with their mental health. To access this service, doctors and medical students can call 1300 374 377 (1300 DR4 DRS)

Background

Since the AMA first developed this Position Statement in 2011, much has happened to inform the revised statement. This includes, but is not limited to:

This Position Statement addresses both the structural and individual barriers to health and wellbeing, and acknowledges that physical and mental health are interrelated. This supports the WHO definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

Dr Bartone said that the AMA has been working with a range of stakeholders to develop the National Medical Framework for coordinated action on doctor and medical student wellbeing.

The Framework, which brings together the best available evidence on what works to prevent and respond to mental ill-health and suicide in the medical profession, will be launched in coming months, Dr Bartone said.

With the presence of a large number of players, such as GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Amway Corp., ABH Pharma Inc., Vitacost.com Inc., and Nu Skin Enterprises Inc., the competitive landscape in the market looks highly fragmented, notes the market study.

The level of the competition is expected to get higher in the next couple of years due to the continuous entry of new players in this market. Protein supplements derived from animal sources have a bigger market than supplements derived from plant sources. TMR notes that the scenario may remain so over the period of the forecast. Hitherto, conventional channels, such as drug stores, convenience stores, and hypermarket/supermarket were the main distribution channels for protein supplements. However, going forward, online stores may gain an edge over these in the coming years.

This regional market is likely to remain on the top over the next few years. Special ring blessing held on hospital ward for mother with cancer who will miss daughter’s wedding – expressandstar.com

Lorraine Cheal has lung and brain cancer and is receiving palliative care at Walsall Manor Hospital.

Her daughter Melissa, age 27, is marrying her partner Jacob McCausland in December this year but knows her mum will not be able to make her big day.

So with the help of the hospital's care team and ward staff, the couple from Cannock visited Lorraine's bedside on Saturday with hospital Chaplain Anthony Swaby to perform a special ring blessing ceremony.

The bride had her wedding dress on and the groom was kitted out in his suit for the big day, while Lorraine and husband Ian also put on smart clothes.

Special needs teacher Melissa said it was an "unforgettable" day. She said her mother had never smoked or drank and had led a healthy lifestyle.

She said: "It meant such a lot to us because mum has been planning the wedding with me and was there when I chose my dress.

"It was important for us to make this memory with her and when we have our wedding in December we will make sure the video that my godmother took of today's ceremony plays a part.

"Mum smiled all the way through which was lovely as she wasnt so well yesterday. We feel blessed to have this opportunity and to be able to share something so special."

Groom Jacob, 26, a civil servant, added: "Melissa wore her wedding dress and the room had been decorated by staff; it seems a bit surreal as everything has happened so quickly. But it means so much to us both that this could be arranged."

Ward 7 Sister Laura Trow added: "Melissa looked absolutely beautiful, stunning. We send her and Lorraine all our love."
