Brandon Marshall talks potential NFL return, new business venture and health habits during career – CBS Sports

Brandon Marshall hasn't officially retired from the NFL, but the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver has remained exceptionally busy since he last caught a NFL pass two years ago. Marshall, the new co-host of "First Things First," also has launched the "House of Athlete" brand dedicated to to support and enhance physical and mental health for the everyday athlete.

Marshall is extremely passionate about "House of Athlete," which redefines the standard approach to lifestyle wellness, giving athletes from all walks of life access to premium resources and tools. This week, "House of Athlete" launched a premium range of five all-natural fueling supplements (mental fitness, immunity, rest, whey protein, vegan protein) that are set in the brand's core values.

An eight-time 1,000-yard receiver, Marshall recorded 970 catches for 12,351 yards and 83 touchdowns in 13 seasons. He's currently 16th all time in receptions, 22nd in receiving yards, and 22nd in touchdowns.

In an exclusive interview with CBSSports.com, Marshall discusses the lifestyle changes he made during his football career and the steps everyday athletes can take to improve their physical and mental health. Marshall also opened up about a potential NFL return and his television career.

Can you further explain the "House of Athlete" brand to all of us?

Marshall: "Back in 2011 when I was playing for the Miami Dolphins and it was the year of the lockout, I started buying equipment and working out at my house -- similar to this year during the pandemic. You saw a lot of the athletes finding a way to continue to move forward and continuing to take care of themselves. So we ended up building this gym in my house and after a month I had Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens, Chris Johnson, Mike Sims-Walker, and Darcy Johnson training with me.

"And we're talking about 300 square feet with one big treadmill and a (weightlifting) rack. In that moment, my trainer and I decided to open up a facility. Long story short, we started this facility and we only train athletes from ages seven up until the professional level. The more I embarked on this journey, the more I realized that we needed to open up for the general population. It was a huge demographic and there's a huge demonstration of people that actually enjoy working out and training.

"Second, they needed it more than us. I was tired of seeing the average person, the average athlete walk in our facility and going through life in pain. That's what 'House of Athlete' is. I just took my 13 years experience playing in the NFL, the integrated approach around performance, medicine, and nutrition, and infused that into 'House of Athlete.'

"There's five things that we hang our hat on, our pillars. If everyone adopts these five things, they will be their best selves. Train, fuel correctly -- and that's macronutrients and supplementation -- be mentally fit, recover, and tribe. No one has ever made it to the top by themselves, so we believe those are the five things we have to educate the athlete on. There's an athlete in everyone and if they can build that into their routine, it becomes a lifestyle. We're just taking that professional athlete -- or the athlete in general -- and putting this into this entire program, giving it to the everyday athlete."

One of your pillars is focused on macronutrients and fueling correctly. How can the everyday athlete achieve that?

Marshall: "Ideally we get all of our macronutrients through food, but it's impossible so that's where the supplementation comes in. This is why we teach people how to approach their plate the right way. What is a healthy carb, healthy veggie, healthy fat, but on the other end of the spectrum -- there's so many things our body needs that we just can't get in food. That's how we dove into formulating the cleanest products on the market. These products -- the vegan protein, the weighted protein, immunity, rest and mental fitness -- the whole product line is to recover and optimize their health.

"Protein is critical for performance, recovery, muscle growth, fat loss. If you don't have protein, there's no way you're walking around as a healthy human being. A lot of us don't know how to supplement and it goes back to that professional athlete experience. My 13 years playing, especially for the New York Jets and New York Giants, I walked into the facility and all the guesswork was taken out of it for me. I didn't have to know about supplementing and nutrition because there was a chef there. There was a coach that told us what to take and when to take it.

"I find that it's hard for the average consumer to navigate us through this unregulated space. That's what we want to do here, teach people what they need, why they need it, and when they should take it depending on their goals. We're tired of seeing people being taken advantage of and not getting what they need by these 'trusted partners' and we'll continue to pound the pavement. We're focused on boosting our immunity during this global pandemic."

Early in your career, with the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins, you didn't have a personal chef telling you what to eat and when to eat. How did you stay in shape?

Marshall: "I think that's part of the journey for all of us. When you're young, you can go bet a burger, chicken wings, junk food and eat whatever you want. You don't feel it. Now, when you get into your mid-to-late 20s, your metabolism starts to slow down and you have to figure it out. As a professional athlete, you have no choice. If you want to stay in the game, you have to figure out nutrition and supplementation and a training regimen that works for you.

"When I was young, I didn't have to figure that out. I just went out there and ran all day, lifted weights as heavy as I could. When the body starts breaking down and the metabolism started getting older, you have to -- have to -- approach nutrition the right way. There's so much sickness and disease in what we're eating and what we are putting in our bodies. I think we're seeing that more than ever right now."

In the latter stages of your NFL career, how did you adjust to changing what you were eating?

Marshall: "Oh it was a process for me. When I entered the NFL, I would go to McDonald's after every practice and get two spicy chicken sandwiches and a triple thick chocolate milkshake. I wouldn't gain a pound and I didn't feel anything. I was balling (laughing).

"As I got older and went to the Dolphins, I didn't change anything I was doing. I had the same approach to food, but I would get on the scale and be up two-or-three pounds. I didn't know my metabolism was slowing down. It got to the point where I was walking around 15-to-20 pounds overweight. In the NFL, every pound that you are overweight, that's a $500 fine.

"So I got into food sensitivity testing, I got into blood testing. I started to understand what my body was allergic to and started building my routine and diet around that. Now, I'm a little different, I like to eat the same things over and over again. How do I mitigate certain inflammation and certain disease and sickness? A lot of that has to do with what we put into our body. That was my approach to food."

Were you able to go to the coaches and team physicians for advice?

Marshall: "For the most part every team has those experts, but it's about actually asking for help. It's not mandatory that every professional and college athlete follows a nutritional plan. I was always the guy that wanted more out of my body and more out of my mind. When things started changing, I started asking questions. That's when I started seeing the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

"Before it was, if I worked out and if I ate right it was because it was my job. The more questions I asked, I learned sickness and disease were running through this world just because we weren't eating right. That's when it became a lifestyle for me. I decided even when I was done playing ball, I was going to take this seriously and I was going to continue to lea
rn. I'm tired of walking around seeing people dying early and fighting heart disease, lung disease, sleep apnea, sleep apnea, certain types of cancers, Types 2 diabetes, and a loss of energy. This is where my passion really comes from."

It seems like your plan significantly reduces the chances of catching a disease like COVID-19 or others?

Marshall: "We're seeing the stronger we are and the healthier we are, the better chances we have of fighting this. We want to optimize our health and there's ways of doing that. Cardiovascular health is extremely important during this time. That's everything, that's how we eat and how we sleep. You know how many people are actually sick and hurting because they are not getting enough sleep?

"Mental fitness. How many people are struggling from everything that's going on in the world? A more accurate and faster brain, a stronger mind goes a long way. So many people look at this industry and see the opportunity where there's so many people buying supplements and there are so many entrepreneurs putting themselves first.

"Now we really have to take this time and learn an implement things into our daily practices. We have to just be better, live longer, and just be stronger mentally and physically."

It's been a year since you been out of football. Based on the way you eat, the way you train, do you believe you can still go out there and ball?

Marshall: "Oh I may go back! There's a couple teams calling now and wanting me to play tight end. I feel amazing. I feel better now than I did the last four years of my career. You never know, I may go back. There may be a return.

I'd love to see you at tight end. I think you would be great for the game. Tight end isn't the same position it was when you were a rookie.

Marshall: "(Laughing) Oh you see it all the time, look at Larry Fitzgerald. He did a lovely job of making that transition from playing outside and dominating outside to dominating inside."

If you were to return, and you said teams are calling, what are you looking for in those teams?

Marshall: "Right now I'm focused on 'House of Athlete.' I'm not really entertaining those calls. I'm super passionate about the next phase of my career and the next phase of my life. Health and wellness has been at the forefront of everything I have done over the past 10 years. To be able to give this my undivided attention, it means a lot to me.

"I'm flattered and I'm honored, but I'm doubling down on helping people especially during this time. This is the time for our coaches, our trainers, our doctors, and our entrepreneurs to really double down on their vision because people need help. People need access to real information -- good information -- and we're just happy to be a part of a solution for people right now dealing with a lot of problems."

I saw you start "First Things First" this week. Guess you like talking about football as much as playing it!

Marshall:"This has been in the works for six, seven months now. I had the opportunity to audition back in December and things went well. I'm just excited for the opportunity to grow, learn, develop and be pushed and challenged in this new venture. I'm just excited to be part of the Fox family. It fits my personality exactly. It's exactly where I want to be."

Since you're in TV now, who do you got winning the Super Bowl?

Marshall: "Seattle."

Hot Properties: High-Country Homesites With Plenty of Breathing Room – 5280 | The Denver Magazine

Wide open spaces: The 24 custom-home sites at the Ranches at Devils Thumb are spread across 550 acres of the 6,500-acre ranch resort. Photo courtesy of Devils Thumb Ranch

Devils Thumb Ranch offers resort-style social distancing with the Ranches, a new community of custom homes on 550 mountain acres.

Denvers housing market has been heating up this summer, with June posting a record-high number of homes under contract in one month. But amidst all the flurry, the spread of COVID-19 is prompting some house-hunters to consider trading their city homes for rural properties with a bit more breathing room. For those looking to gain lots of space without sacrificing creature comforts, the 6,500-acre Devils Thumb Ranch resort and spa in Tabernash has an enticing option: the Ranches, a new 550-acre enclave of 24 custom-home building sites ranging in size from 11 to 35 acres and priced from $750,000, with a minimum home size of 3,000 square feet.

The Ranches might be the perfect solution for those who have dreamed of the ranch lifestylewithout all the ranch chores. Nestled into the high country75 miles west of Denver and within easy reach of Winter Park, Lake Granby, Grand Lake, and Rocky Mountain National ParkDevils Thumb Ranch was recently named one of Travel + Leisure magazines top 25 family resorts in the United States. Surrounded by the Arapahoe National Forest and James Peak and Indian Peaks Wilderness preserves, theres plenty of room to breathe free.

Residents can opt for a membership providing full access to resort amenities plus exclusive homeowner perks, including restaurant dining, riding stables, a spa and pool, cross-country skiing (with 75 miles of private trails), fly-fishing (along with access to the Hatch, a residents-only fishing cabin), mountain biking, yoga, shuttles, housekeeping, concierge services, and the Cowpoke Camp for kids.

Our current situation reinforces the need for a healthy lifestyle, access to the outdoors, and great recreation opportunities, along with a need for more space and privacy than what is provided in most urban locations, says Rob Cyman, president of the Ranches at Devils Thumb. Im in discussions with families who want to relocate and have this be their primary residence, and others who want this to be a secondresidence, a legacy property where their extended family can gather for many years to come. They can choose to remain in their residence and enjoy that privacy and the beauty of the setting, or, because they have the resort next door, they can choose to be as social as they desire.

Prospective homeowners can also choose their own architect and builder for a custom plan (subject to approval by a design committee), or consider one of the Ranches spec homes. The first two of those have been designed by architect Eric Mandil, of Denver-based design firm Mandil Inc., and are expected to be finished by autumn 2021.

The two homesnamed the Homestead and Ranch Collinademonstrate different twists on the ranch lifestyle. Mandil describes the Homesteads style as an elegant barn with rustic overtones, crafted from tailored timber and stone. It features a large, vaulted great room flanked by two wings spreading out on either side. There are two master suites, a bunk room, wine bar, dining room with 24-guest capacity, home office space, three fireplaces plus a potbelly stove, a three-car garage, and ample storage for skis and outdoor toys. The pet-friendly home also includes a dog-washing room, kennel, and exterior dog run. Half of the 5,880-square-foot floor plan can easily be closed off, making it ideal for one or two couples or an extended family.

The other Mandil-designed spec home, Ranch Collina, will be sleeker and smaller, in more of a mountain-modern spirit, with interiors by Sue Steffen of Steffen Design Consulting.

What we were trying to do is create a new concept of ranch that was truly Coloradomore down to earth, more part of that valleythat wasnt pretentious, but it was indigenous, and quiet, and felt more regional, Mandil explains. Individual units can be different, but they all develop into something that feels cohesive.

With wide-open spaces and work-from-home options, the fledgling community strikes a together-yet-apart balance thats especially appealing right now. The Ranches offers unparalleled views, privacy, and access to the resort next door, Cyman says. Homeowners will feel a strong connection to the natural environment, removed from a dense development or urban area, but still have access to all the amenities that will make them comfortable in their home.

The Pandemic Is Stressing Many of Our HeartsHeres What a Cardiologist Wants You To Know – Well+Good

Without question, virtually everyone has felt more stressed out since the start of COVID-19. First, there are the large, looming stressors like protecting yourself and loved ones from the virus, or finding the money to pay your bills after a layoff. Then, there are the minor ones like figuring out how to work Zoom or remember middle school math now that youre expected to homeschooland those minor stressors just keep piling on top of each other.

While you may be conscious of the fact that youre feeling more stressed than usual, for a growing number of people, its actually become a potentially life-threatening, physical problem. A new study published in the journal Cardiology found that the pandemic is literally putting stress on our hearts. More specifically, the study looked at nearly 2,000 patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which is an umbrella term for several conditions that happen when there is sudden reduced blood flow to the heart, says cardiologist Suzanne Steinbaum, MD.

For some patients, an acute coronary syndrome can present as a heart attack with blockage of blood flow of the artery, causing damage to the heart muscle, says Dr. Steinbaum. However, after comparing the symptoms and diagnoses of the ACS patients between those that occurred during COVID-19 and several other time periods, the study authors found there was a significant increase in one specific type of ACS called stress cardiomyopathy, aka broken heart syndrome.

Why? Well, people are feeling more stressed than everand stress isnt good for your heart. Dr. Steinbaum says lower-income folks are at most risk for ACS such as stress cardiomyopathy during this time because, to be frank, they experience the most stress. Socioeconomic status may also increase stress, especially if someone has been furloughed or lost their job because of the pandemic, she says. Socioeconomic status can also affect access to basic living necessities, medication, doctors and the ability to adopt healthy lifestyle changes, she sayswhich further affects a persons heart health.

How a person copes with stress can also impact their heart health; people might turn to increased alcohol consumption or up their processed snack intake as coping mechanisms. But those might backfire if gone unchecked, Dr. Steinbaum says. Under these stressful situations, unhealthy behaviors may lead to an increase in risk factors, such as an increase in weight, elevated blood pressures, and an increase in sugars. These are all potent risks for acute coronary syndromes.

According to Nieca Goldberg, MD, the medical director of New York Universitys Womens Heart Program, there are a few other reasons why the pandemic has led to an uptick in this type of heart condition. People are delaying care because they are too scared to go to the hospital, she says. Also, some people have not taken their medications for high blood pressure or cholesterol. Dr. Goldberg also adds that the pandemic may be making it harder for people to exercise or follow a healthy diet, lifestyle habits that are critical for heart health.

Of course there are very real reasons to feel stress right now, many of which arent controllable. But both experts say that you can control your lifestyle habits to an extent, and that will help decrease the risk for this type of heart condition. Beans, legumes, fruit, canned vegetables, and canned tuna are all foods linked to benefitting heart health that arent expensive. Exercise is important, too. Even if you cant get to the gym right now, going for walks with your mask on when possible and safe are beneficial.

While managing stress often feels easier said than done, its an important part of heart health. During times of heightened stress, its important to take moments in your day to practice mindfulness, physical activity, eating right, and getting enough sleep, Dr. Steinbaum says. Even though many of us are separate from our friends and family, make time to reach out and connect every day. We might feel isolated, but we need to remind ourselves that we are not alone. Find time every day to do something that helps with dealing with your stress.

Dr. Steinbaum also urges people to not avoid medical care out of fears of the coronavirus. You can still talk to your doctor online, by phone, e-mail, or use telemedicine if available, she says. In-person visits for exams and procedures are still happening toojust make sure you wear a mask when you go.

Healthy routines have certainly been thrown for a loop this year, but this new report is a reminder that its more important than ever to find ways to minimize stress in your life. Its advice worth taking, well, to heart.

If you’ve had chickenpox you’re at risk of a painful condition called shingles here’s why – Insider – INSIDER

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that usually results in rashes or blisters that most typically develop in a linear pattern on one side of your body.

The infection is common and about 1 in 3 people get shingles in their lifetime. It's caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, so if you've had chickenpox, you're at risk to develop shingles.

Here's what you need to know about the causes of shingles, as well as how to treat and prevent it.

A rash with blisters is the main visible symptom of shingles. The typical rash appears on one side of the body in a narrow band-like distribution and is most common along the torso.

Some other symptoms of shingles include:

If you had chickenpox when you were younger, your body was exposed to the varicella-zoster virus. Even after your chickenpox has healed, the virus remains in your body for the rest of your life. That's why you usually can't get chickenpox twice.

The virus lives in an inactive state in the dorsal root ganglion, which is a cluster of neurons that carry sensory information to the spinal cord, says Caroline Nelson, MD, a dermatologist at Yale Medicine. In this inactive state, the virus is harmless. Only once your immune system weakens to the point where it can no longer keep it under control does the virus reactivate causing shingles.

When the varicella-zoster virus reactivates, it travels down the nerve fibers that go from the dorsal root ganglia to the surface of the skin. As the virus multiplies, you typically develop the rash that is the telltale sign of shingles.

Everyone who has had chickenpox has the varicella zoster virus in their body, putting them at risk for developing shingles. While there is no way of knowing who will or will not get shingles, certain factors that impair the immune system but people at greater risk. Some of these factors are:

The main treatment for shingles is antiviral medications. The most common antiviral meds for shingles are:

If you think you have shingles, do not hesitate to get treatment. These medications will help reduce the severity and the duration of your shingles if you take them early. "Time matters. Antivirals are most effective when started within 72 hours of the appearance of skin lesions," says Nelson.

"[Antivirals] can accelerate lesion crusting and crust resolution by one to two days, reduce duration of viral shedding, reduce duration of acute pain, and perhaps most importantly reduce the duration of post-herpetic neuralgia," says Nelson.

Post-herpetic neuralgia is a complication that can result in the pain, itching, and numbness from shingles to last three or more months after the shingles infection.

Aside from getting the virus itself under control, you can also relieve the discomfort of your symptoms by:

Nelson calls vaccines the cornerstone of prevention for shingles. Even if you had chickenpox as a child, you can, and should, still get vaccinated for shingles.

The FDA approved a vaccine called Shingrix in 2017. According to the CDC, two doses of Shingrix was 97% effective for people aged 50-69 years old, and 91% effective in those 70 years and older.

Nelson recommends the vaccine for people who:

Additionally, you can try to keep stress levels under control so that you can reduce that risk factor, as well as maintain a healthy lifestyle to have a stronger immune system.

If you think you may have shingles, see your doctor as soon as possible so you can receive treatment and feel some relief from the discomfort. Also, be sure to avoid others, especially those who have not had chickenpox, the chickenpox vaccine, or those who are immunocompromised.

While you can't directly transmit shingles to somebody, you can infect them with chickenpox through open blisters. However, once the rash is crusted over, you aren't infectious anymore.

What You Need to Know About Obesity – SWAAY

A healthy lifestyle is a concept many doctors and health professionals are constantly stressing to their patients and overall communities. In a time where most of us lead chaotic and busy lives, it is easy to make the wrong choices on a daily basis. Moreover, junk food is often readily available and its low cost, when compared to high-quality food, makes it easily accessible to the majority of people.

This, along with leading a sedentary lifestyle, sitting at a desk all day at work, or playing video games instead of exercising outside can result in weight problems that can be seriously detrimental to the individual's health. In this article, we will discuss a few things you need to know about obesity.

Weight gain is caused by ingesting more calories than one burn through physical exercise. If someone is eating frequently, a lack of exercise will most likely result in significant weight gain.

Everyone is different, and some have metabolisms that allow them to eat as frequently as they want without gaining a concerning amount of weight. However, no one should eat more than what they need, and a healthy diet should be preferred over fast food.

This plays a role in obesity research shows that a child is likely to become obese when both parents are obese as genetics influence fat regulating hormones. This, however, could also be due to learned behavior as if both parents have unhealthy habits, they are likely to pass these on to their offspring.

Studies have shown that certain medications, such as antidepressants even oral contraceptives contribute to significant weight gain. This is something a doctor can explore with your doctor if you are concerned about medications you are currently taking.

Certain processed foods are created in a way to make us feel better emotionally, such as chocolate. Emotional issues such as sadness or stress may cause an individual to develop serious unhealthy eating habits associated with obesity.

Obesity is associated with serious underlying health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, respiratory problems, high blood pressure, and even certain types of cancer. Obesity must be taken seriously, as it can eventually lead to the obese individual's death.

When an individual experiences obesity, it has significant effects on the life you live and it will restrict you from fully enjoying yourself. You may not be able to physically move without additional support. And this may affect you in such a way that the relationships you have with loved ones are affected too. This is particularly important if you have young children who need you, as you may not be able to properly look after them.

Your BMI is a number indicative of the correlation between your weight and your height, and it is a commonly used tool to diagnose obesity. This is important to know, particularly if you are unsure whether you are suffering from being overweight or obese, which are two different conditions. If your BMI is 30 or higher, you are considered obese.

There are many factors associated with obesity and this is a challenging health condition to overcome. Not everyone is equal and what works for other people may not necessarily work for you. For this reason, educate yourself on this issue and, with the guidance from a health professional, explore what factors may be contributing to your obesity and the best available treatment for you.

A more drastic but effective method to treat obesity is to undergo Bariatric surgery. This entails different types of operations that support you to lose weight by modifying your digestive system. Bariatric surgery may be a choice if you are suffering from extreme obesity and have tried different methods that have been unsuccessful.

Bariatric surgery also may be available to you at lower levels of obesity if you suffer from serious health problems, such as type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea, associated with obesity. If you are considering this, be aware that there may be side effects, as with any surgeries, therefore consult trusted experts beforehand so that you can make an informed decision. Bariatric surgery can help not only with weight loss but also with many of the medical conditions associated with obesity.

Overcoming obesity is a long-term process and something that will require discipline. By entering a weight-management program, you can work with trained specialists, who will offer you tailored advice and a plan for you to follow rigorously. These plans majorly focus on healthy and balanced diets, increasing your physical activity, and lead an overall healthy lifestyle. Your qualified specialist will maintain regular contact with you to ensure that you stick to the plan to treat obesity and improve the condition of your health.

Obesity is not always down to a lack of willpower. Although overeating indeed contributes to obesity, many other factors cause this condition that is out of the individual's control. Even though this is a challenging condition to overcome, with the right support and determination in place, this can be achieved.

Study of the North American Ready Meals Market, 2020-2025 – ResearchAndMarkets.com – Business Wire

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "North America Ready Meals Market- Growth, Trends and Forecast (2020-2025)" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The North American Ready Meals Market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.96% during the forecast period (2020-2025).

The market for ready meals is developing rapidly due to factors, such as the prevalence of a fast-paced lifestyle, especially in urban areas, which is leading to increased demand for precooked foods, among consumers, to save time. The changing food consumption patterns, due to increasing urbanization, is another factor driving the ready meals market.

From the manufacturers point of view, advances in food technology and development in terms of food preparation and processing have enabled the expansion of the market. The companies are increasingly introducing health-based ready meals to cater to the unmet needs of health-conscious individuals, following an active and healthy lifestyle.

Key Market Trends

Inclination Towards Organic Ready Meals

Consumers have begun to place more value on food that offers them functional benefits apart from taste, thereby, increasing the demand for healthy, natural, and safe ready meals. These organic food alternatives are positively impacting the growth of the market. Health awareness and concerns for food safety are leading to more consumers carefully selecting their ready meals, to avoid adverse health effects. Also, organic ready meals are deriving a lot of their value through consumer trust and their perception of the products being healthy.

Ready meals are becoming highly popular in the packaged food market due to their convenience and portability. In addition to this, organic ready meals are gaining traction as they are verified natural products that could substitute a full meal, and also, they are healthier than traditional ready meals due to portion-size packaging. With consumers requiring more product varieties among the segment, such as organic, chilled, and frozen pizzas, manufacturers are focusing on more product innovations to suit the new go-to health choices of people across the world.

Supermarket/Hypermarket is the Most Preferred Sales Channel

The strategy followed by the supermarkets to keep the ready meals in a glass refrigerator shelf or an open shelf to capture shopper's attraction is adding advantage in increasing the consumer base.

The large shelf space provided for ready meals, under different product type categories offered by various brands, gives the consumers an opportunity to compare the products and choose the suitable products under their budget range. This, in turn, is strongly augmenting the sales of ready meals through the supermarkets, with a wide variety of products being offered by supermarkets.

The sales of ready meals through supermarkets-owned private labeled brands offer a product by understanding the traditional flavor preferences of the consumers. Moreover, keeping the price either slightly less or the same as that of other brands provide consumers a broader option to choose, as per the taste and budget.

Competitive Landscape

North America's ready meals market is a highly fragmented market with the presence of many players competing for market share. The players are diversifying their product portfolio to include more ready meals into their product range. The players are also focusing on expansion, mergers and acquisitions, and partnerships to meet the demand of consumers. The Campbell Soup Company, Nestle, Conagra Brands, and Hormel Food Corporation are some of the major players in the market.

Should High School Girl Lacrosse Players Be Required to Wear the Same Helmets as High School Boys? – Everyday Health

High school girls lacrosse players are at a higher risk of concussion from a stick or ball impact than boys lacrosse players. In girls lacrosse, players are allowed, but not required, to wear flexible protective headgear. What they arent allowed to wear is the type of hard-shell helmet with a full-face mask that the boys lacrosse players use.

A new study, published in May 2020 in Injury Epidemiology, finds that if girls lacrosse players used the same helmets that are mandated in boys lacrosse, the number of concussions suffered by girls could be reduced by 44 percent.

What we found is that a surprisingly high proportion of the concussions that girls' high school lacrosse players sustain, specifically by being struck in the head directly by the stick or the ball, could have been prevented if they had been wearing the same helmet as the boys, says Dawn Comstock, PhD, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Colorado School of Public Health in Denver.

Researchers used lacrosse concussion data from the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance Study, also known as High School RIO, an internet-based data collection tool that allows direct comparison of injury rates across sports.

By looking at the number of concussions, the number of events and practices, as well as the cause of the concussion, researchers estimated the total percentage of girls concussions that could have been prevented if the girls wore the same helmet required in boys lacrosse.

Investigators found that while the rate of concussion for boys and girls was nearly the same, the causes of the concussions were not. In girls lacrosse, stick or ball contact was the most common trigger and accounted for 72.7 percent of all concussions, and athlete-to-athlete contact accounted for 19.8 percent. For boys lacrosse, almost two-thirds of concussions were caused by athlete-to-athlete contact and stick or ball contact accounted for 23.5 percent.

The rules for girls and boys lacrosse are different. The girls game is designed to be softer and safer, says Dr. Comstock. Girls are not allowed body contact or bodychecking like boys are, and girls have what they call the sphere rule, which dictates that there is a seven-inch imaginary bubble around the head of each girl, and no one is supposed to be allowed to stick check within that imaginary seven-inch bubble, she says.

Those two rules are supposed to be preventing head injury in girls lacrosse. The problem is our data shows that those rules are not currently protecting them, says Comstock.

Although there could be a few different solutions for reducing the risk of concussion in girls lacrosse, requiring the girls to wear the same helmets as boys seems to be one of the more logical and proven options, says Comstock.

Theres lots of research out there that shows that helmets are actually very effective at preventing the kind of injuries of the type that occur when youre struck directly in the head by a stick or a ball. Helmets are not as effective in preventing the concussions that occur from athlete-to-athlete contact though, she says.

This safety issue seems like low hanging fruit, says Comstock. Weve recognized an injury problem in a sport, and we have an available intervention that we know would be effective at reducing that injury risk why not utilize it? she says.

Although girls arent allowed to wear the same hard-shell helmet that boys wear, there is headgear that is optional for girls lacrosse. In 2015, U.S. Lacrosse, the governing body of lacrosse in the United States, collaborated with ASTM International, a nonprofit organization that develops and publishes international voluntary consensus standards, to develop a standard protective headgear for womens lacrosse.

The headgear fully covers the head and is flexible to ensure that players wearing the headgear will not injure players who are not wearing it, according to U.S. Lacrosse. The standard has two options, one with integrated eyewear, the other without, although any headgear used must be worn with the required eyewear.

The differences in head protection are presumably based on the rules, and not any inherent difference between the sexes.

There isnt really a biological or clinical reason for requiring different helmets for boys and girls, says Mark Halstead, MD, an associate professor in orthopedic surgery and pediatrics and the director of the sports concussion program at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

And, Comstock adds, Its not clear if all the girls wore the optional headgear if it would reduce concussions, in part because hardly any girls chose to wear it.

Girls lacrosse was very resistant to the protective eyewear mandate in 2004. There was a lot of pushback, says Dr. Halstead. Eventually it happened, but with a fuss. Certainly, I could see a similar issue if the change in headgear was proposed, he says.

This unwillingness to change is not unique to lacrosse, says Comstock. Historically, every time theres been an effort to introduce protective equipment into different sports theres been pushback from people, though the arguments are often the same, regardless of the sport, she says.

Some people argue that the helmets and full-face mask would reduce peripheral vision or somehow impede the vision of the players, therefore putting the athletes at increased risk because they wont see balls or sticks coming at them and be able to react accordingly, says Comstock. That sounds logical, but if the boys could wear the helmet without any undue risk, why cant the girls? she asks.

Then there's the gladiator effect argument: If you put a piece of protective equipment on the players it will cause them to be much more reckless and aggressive, which could introduce new injuries into the game because of that increased aggressiveness, says Comstock. The helmets havent had that effect on the boys game, and theres no reason to think that it would cause that for girls, she says.

Playing a sport is associated with numerous health benefits, such as decreased risk of obesity, chronic disease, and depression, along with improved life skills, including time management and goal setting, according to research published in the Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine.

We know that playing sports is the most important way for young people to incorporate physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle, Comstock says, adding that the findings are not intended to discourage girls from participating in high school lacrosse.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that athletes avoid the following behaviors to reduce the risk of concussion in sports:

Id love to see more kids play more sports. I just want to keep them as safe as possible while they do so, Comstock says.

New prescription pill that could help you lose weight approved by FDA – The Star Online

Obesity is a condition characterised by excess deposition of fat to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health.

Not only is obesity an epidemic and a public health problem, but as defined by The Obesity Society, is also a severely debilitating condition in its own right.

It is caused by overeating, lack of physical activity, genetic susceptibility, hormonal imbalance and psychological issues. Obesity is associated with adverse health effects such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, stroke, joint damage and excess cholesterol, which eventually leads to cardiovascular disease (heart attack).

This highlights the importance of knowledge of obesity and recent advances in its management for the general public.

Obesity is measured by body mass index (BMI), which is calculated using the formula: weight in kilogrammes divided by the square of the height in metres (kg/m2).

There are numerous online BMI calculators, which will help to get the BMI value in seconds.

The World Health Organization recommends a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 as normal for the adult population; 25-29.9 as pre-obese; and more than 30 as obese.

For the East Asian population, a lower BMI is recommended to determine obesity because the mean BMI is lesser than in the European population.

So, in addition to BMI, waist circumference (males 94cm and females 80cm) is also used to determine the central obesity in the Asian population.

The management of obesity mainly involves the restriction of calorie intake and enhancing physical activity. This will work for a majority of the pre-obese and obese individuals, who strictly comply with it.

In individuals with specific associated conditions, along with diet and exercise, underlying hormonal and psychological diseases have to be treated to overcome obesity.

Those who do not benefit from diet and exercise are treated with medications which either reduce the calorie intake by suppressing appetite or increasing energy consumption. Some medications prevent the intestinal absorption of nutrients.

If the methods above dont work, there is an option of a gastric balloon or a surgical procedure to limit the volume of the stomach or reduce the length of intestines. However, they are invasive and are associated with complications.

New treatment modality

Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved a non-invasive oral hydrogel-based weight loss pill.

These pills are expected to be available in 2021 in the US, and possibly in other parts of the world.

The prescription pills, intended for individuals with a BMI of 25-40, have to be taken twice daily with water, about 20 minutes before lunch and dinner.

How it works: This oral pill is made up of a super-absorbent hydrogel, which is not absorbed into the blood.

Instead, it is eliminated from the gut, just like food particles.

The pill contains multiple small particles composed of two natural components, cellulose and citric acid, which create a complex structure having the ability to absorb and retain huge amounts of water.

The capsule particles can swell up to 100 times more than its original size when consumed and gain an elasticity similar to ingested food.

Multiple particles from the capsule can fill the stomach, and the individual does not feel hungry, thus leading to smaller food consumption.

This will help to reduce the overall calorie intake by the consumer and consequently, promote weight loss. The hydrated particles undergo degradation in the large intestine with the reabsorption of water and excretion of the degraded particles in the stool.

While the pill is easy to pop into the mouth, it does come with some minor side effects such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea and flatulence.

It is not advised for pregnant ladies and individuals having an allergy to cellulose or citric acid.

Also, this pill should be used with precaution in individuals with gastrointestinal disorders (GI) such as Crohns disease, diverticula, history of GI surgery, adhesions and GI ulcers.

Considering the ill effects of obesity, one should always practise a healthy lifestyle to prevent the onset. But one should not worry if he is unsuccessful in preventing obesity due to various factors as there are many modalities of management.

Oral hydrogen-based capsules will be an addition to the list of existing treatment modalities with an expectation to treat obesity and prevent obesity-related complications.

5 Amazing Health Benefits of Pumpkin – MSN Money

Bohemian Nomad Picturemakers - Getty Images Whether it's canned or fresh, pumpkin has many health benefits. It can help your vision, prevent cancer, support immunity, and more.

You can do lots more with pumpkin than serve it up as a Thanksgiving dessert or carve it for Halloween! If youve been overlooking this superfood, now is the time to add pumpkin to your diet (did you know pumpkin is a fruit?). For starters, its packed with antioxidants that support immune function, good vision, and heart health. It may even protect against cancer. Pumpkin packs a lot of nutritional power, says Amy Kimberlain, RDN, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Its also incredibly versatile and can be added to many different dishes.

Heres how to get the most from its health benefits:

Its an incredibly nutritious food that supplies you with high levels of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, C, and E, says Kimberlain. Adding pumpkin to your diet gives you nutritional benefits with no fat, 2 grams of protein, and 3 grams of fiber. And one cup of cooked pumpkin has only 49 calories.

Pumpkin provides 245 percent of your daily recommended intake of vitamin A, which helps your body fight off infections, says Kimberlain. It also boasts 19 percent of your daily needs for vitamin C, which helps immune cells work more efficiently and wounds heal faster.

Pumpkin also contains high levels of beta carotene, which gives this winter squash its beautiful bright orange color. In a National Eye Institute clinical trial, high doses of vitamins C, E, and beta carotene reduced the risk of progression of age-related macular degeneration. Although they didnt study pumpkin specifically, pumpkin contains all these nutrients so it makes sense to add it to your diet, says Kimberlain.

Pumpkin has high levels of potassium. One study showed that a reduction in sodium and an increase in potassium helped lower blood pressure to potentially reduce stroke risk. Also, the antioxidants in pumpkin such as vitamin C, E, and lutein may reduce inflammation linked to heart disease.

Preliminary research shows that antioxidants such as betacarotene found in high levels in pumpkin may protect against certain kinds of cancer such as lung or prostate cancer. One study also showed the protective effects of carotenoids such as beta carotene against colon cancer.

We're not talking about a pumpkin spice latte. Its totally fine to indulge in a piece of pumpkin pie or cake occasionally because all foods fit into a healthy lifestyle, says Kimberlain. But you dont have to save pumpkin for dessert! Incorporate pumpkin into meals with these healthy pumpkin recipes:

It doesnt really matter! Use whatever is easier for you. Keeping a can in the pantry makes it convenient to stir into dishes without having to plan ahead, says Kimberlain. Make sure you buy canned pumpkin and not pumpkin pie mix, which contains added sugars and is meant for baking. If youre feeling ambitious, pumpkins arent that difficult to grow in your garden.

If you do want to use fresh pumpkin, its super-easy to roast! Look for sugar pumpkins, which are smaller and sweeter than carving pumpkins. Wash, then cut in half or into large strips, and remove the pulp (save the seeds to roast separately!). Place pieces in a jelly roll pan, drizzle with your oil of choice, and roast at 400 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. When you can poke a fork in easily, its done. Let cool, then scoop out the soft pumpkin with a spoon. Pumpkin also freezes well.

The pumpkin seeds, which also contain antioxidants, are just as yummy! Rinse well, spread on a jelly roll pan, drizzle with olive oil, and bake at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes. Top with seasonings of your choice such as garlic powder or cayenne pepper. Or saut them in a pan on low heat until dry and crispy. Eat whole!

‘Herb’ mentality in Coronavirus – Times of India

Have you seen the scramble for Giloy these past few months? Mint and basil pots have been actively replaced by Giloy in most households, a plant that's become the quintessential sanjeevani booti of the modern world. People are growing it, juicing it, powdering it -- whatever the form -- they are consuming a lot of it. While its benefits are well known, the hysteria surrounding it right now seems a bit stretched. Consuming Giloy juice can help you get rid of fever, which is one of the signs of Covid-19. Its anti-inflammatory properties can also help in tackling respiratory problems like cough, cold, and breathing problems, says Parag Kaushik, co-founder, Upakarma Ayurveda. But it is not an antidote for Covid-19, just like no amount of vitamins or kadhas are. Antiviral herbs, respiratory restoratives and expectorants are an integral part of curing fevers and bronchial issues in herbalism. But they can only be considered supportive care in Covid-19 and not the cure.No single drug remediesImmunity is the big word right now and there are no shortcuts for building that. But there isn't such a thing as 'one herb cures all'. It is usually a combination of a healthy lifestyle and the correct and therapeutic use of a combination of herbs that can protect us effectively in the present times. That said, overuse of anything, even if it is a known nectar, is equally harmful for us, says Dr Manoj Kutteri, Wellness Director at Atmantan Wellness Centre. Also, Ayurveda is a slow process and builds our inner mechanism gradually. Consumption of Ayurvedic herbs is subject to ones own body mechanism and pre-existing conditions. The effects of Ayurvedic herbs are not instant. Ayurveda works slowly and it depends upon each person on how much time will it take to show the desired results, explains Kaushik.Lets not self-medicateWHO states clearly that while some western, traditional or home remedies may provide comfort and alleviate symptoms of COVID-19, there is no evidence that current medicine can prevent or cure the disease. WHO does not recommend self-medication with any medicines, including antibiotics, as a prevention or cure for the virus. The same applies to herbal supplements. Some Ayurvedic herbs are made into teas or tonics. Others are formulated in capsules, tablets, and oral tinctures. If purchasing an Ayurvedic herb online, through an Ayurvedic practitioner, or at a specialty health food store, the general rule of thumb is to never exceed the prescribed dose. There is no guarantee you won't still get side effects, but the general assumption is that the herb is safe at the prescribed dose, at least for short-term use. In the case of Giloy for instance, in some people overuse can cause constipation and lower blood sugar levels. So if you are diabetic and have been consuming Giloy on a long-term basis, monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.
