Why Generation X is a health timebomb – expressandstar.com

For all the talk about childhood obesity, it seems that Generation X born in the 1960s and 70s is in no position to dish out the lectures. Because a new study by University College London says that while today's middle-aged folk may live longer, they are in far worse shape than the Baby-Boomers who went before them.

The study, which looked at 35,189 people aged between 25 and 64 who took part in the annual Health Survey of England between 1991 and 2014, found that conditions such as diabetes and obesity were far more prevalent among people born in the 1960s and 70s than those born shortly after the war.

This probably does not come as a huge surprise to us Generation X-ers. While the early Baby-Boomers spent their formative years in an era of postwar austerity when rationing was still in place and the Dig for Victory mindset was still fresh in the mind, our generation grew up in the age of conspicuous consumption. While our parents grew up on a diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, Generation X was the generation which could eat anything it wanted. And we chose to use that liberty by gorging on Space Dust, Corona orangeade and Aztec bars.

While housewives in the 1940s and 50s would walk up to their local greengrocer and butcher each day, Generation X grew up just as these small businesses were being replaced by the supermarkets, when ready-meals were becoming de rigeur, and when the must-have status symbol was a giant chest freezer, followed a few years later by the microwave oven.

And then there was television. While today's older generation would have spent their childhoods enjoying healthy outdoor activities, today's forty- and fifty-somethings chose to stay in the house glued to the Clangers and Rentaghost.

But it's not all down to our mis-spent childhood. Children of the 60s and 70s are also far more likely to lead sedentary lives, in no small part due to a change in the way we work.

Perhaps contrary to popular belief, the service sector has actually dominated the UK economy for the past 100 years, but there is no doubt that we are more likely to earn a living sat at a desk than we were half a century ago. In 1965, the primary sector, made up mainly of agriculture and mining, accounted for 5.5 per cent of the labour force, and manufacturing and construction 40 per cent, with the remainder working in the service sector. But by 2016, the primary sector had fallen to 1.3 per cent, and manufacturing and construction had dropped to 15.1 per cent, with 83.6 per cent working in the service sector. So many people who might in the past have done physical jobs in a factory or field now find themselves sat behind a computer screen.

Dr Satya Sharma, a retired Black Country GP, says the research confirms what he had suspected for many years. And the bleak news is that he fears that the next generation, the Millennials, will suffer even more problems in the future.

"I think the young generation have a less healthy lifestyle," he says.

"Instead of thinking about their health, they think more in terms of wanting to enjoy themselves, and their definition of enjoying themselves seems to be going out to eat, or doing things like going to the cinema."

Some health conditions may be down to people living longer, he says. For example, the likelihood of developing diabetes increases as we get older, as our insulin levels decline. But the most striking thing about the UCL study is that people in their 40s and 50s today are far more likely to have health problems than people their age would have done a generation before.

Later-born cohorts were more likely to have diabetes, to be overweight and to report having cardiovascular disease and poor health in general while later-born men were more likely to report high blood pressure, it adds.

Professor George Ploubidis, the senior author of the report, says: "Earlier in the 20th century, a rise in life expectancy went hand in hand with an increase in healthy lifespan - younger generations were living longer, healthier lives.

"It appears that, for those generations born between 1945 and 1980, this trend has stalled. Those born later are expected to live longer on average, but with more years of ill health."

This is not only bad news for Generation X, but it could be catastrophic for the National Health Service as it has to find the resources to cope with an ever-increasing ageing population with more and more health problems. This may be why Boris Johnson by his own admission, an overweight 56-year-old is looking at banning two-for-one offers on junk food.

Dr Sharma, a very fit 70-year-old Baby Boomer, says the findings back up research carried out some years ago in Bilston and Low Hill, Wolverhampton, which found growing rates of obesity among children.

He also believes that today's fast-paced, high-pressure, social-media dominated world is placing a greater strain on people's mental health, which is very often the underlying cause of poor physical mental health.

"A lot of the problems talked about, such as high blood pressure, are caused by mental health problems," says Dr Sharma.

"We live in a time now where people will apologise for taking three hours to get back to someone. What is there something to apologise for?

"You might have three cars, but if you are unhappy, do those cars improve your happiness? It's the people you have around you that make you happy.

"People don't seem to talk to friends and family they way they used to, young people seem to be more self-centred, they live in their own little world with their iPad or social media."

The positive news is that medical treatments have made huge advances over the past half century, and many of the conditions can be managed. That is why a boy born in 2018 can expect to live to 79.6 years old, while a girl should manage 83.6 years.

But Dr Sharma points out that quality of life is just as important as quantity.

"Living longer is not necessarily a blessing if you are going to spend those extra years in poor health."

Obesity can increase the risk of several chronic diseases

Obesity and being overweight is not only disadvantageous but it is also a dangerous condition. Meditation - Beej Dhyan/Aarambh Dhyan

The mind is very much like a fertile land where we plant the seeds of our thoughts, and actions for our life. For a plant to grow beautifully, it needs its share of sunlight, fertilizer, and water. Much like a plant, how we nurture our mind and our energies will be reflected in the way that we grow. Bheej Dhyan is the meditation technique that teaches us to pause in life. We can use this method to sow the seeds that can bring about great improvement in our life. Whether we want to start a new habit, change our response, or behaviour all depends on the mind.

Bheej Dhyan or Seed Meditation tests your auto response system. Reacting to life's circumstances in an unconscious manner can either be extremely favourable or unfavourable to your growth and personal success. Seed Meditation controls and transforms this automatic response system that lies within you.

Strive to Thrive comes to an end; winner announced – Richland Source

Editor's Note: The Strive to Thrive competition launched in January 2020 after nine local contestants were chosen by Richland Source and OhioHealth Ontario Health & Fitness to compete in a 12-week weight loss challenge.

MANSFIELD After seven months of exercise, waiting through delays due to COVID-19 and contestants maintaining self-discipline, the Strive to Thrive contest officially came to a close, crowning Sue Hunt as the winner.

Based on the relative change of body fat percentage in the final weekly contestant standings, Hunt won after a relative change of 10.6% followed by Justin Brant with 9.2%.

It was really tough and I wasn't 100% on track, Hunt admitted. I was kind of slipping back into my larger portion eating ways, although I still tried to eat the good things and not so much of the not so good things.

The Strive to Thrive contest began in January 2020 and has now concluded.

The contest began in January 2020. The fitness team at OhioHealth and Richland Source embarked on a 12-week contest called 'Strive to Thrive.

From the start, we saw commitment from our contestantseating right and making time to exercise. When fitness centers were required to shut down and quarantine due to COVID, contestants were not deterred, wrote Emily Freeman, OhioHealth Ontario Health and Fitness Center supervisor.

At the start of the competition nine contestants participated, but with COVID-19 a few dropped out, leaving only five contestants in the running to receive a one-year gym membership at OhioHealth training facilities.

The OhioHealth fitness team quickly adapted to virtual programming, providing online workouts and emailed support, Freeman wrote. After four months of quarantine contestants saw a reduction in body composition and weight. They adapted new skills in overcoming challenges to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

At the start of the competition nine contestants participated, but with COVID-19 a few dropped out, leaving only five contestants in the running.

Hunts original goal for the competition was to get back in shape so she could be able to play tennis again. She made great progress and maintained the lead throughout the competition, though COVID-19 ended up setting her back. In order to maintain her workout regimen, Hunt took her dog out for long walks and purchased a set of dumbbells to workout with at home.

After winning, Hunt, who works as an administrative assistant at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and is already eligible for a reimbursable membership through OhioHealth's insurance, decided to give her one year membership to the runner up.

I didn't know who was in second but I'm happy that somebody will be able to make good use of it, Hunt said. With the hospital reimbursing associates memberships, it just didn't seem fair for me to take it all.

While taking extraordinary measures to keep their facility safe, OhioHealth Ontario Health and Fitness Center is also offering to waive enrollment fees in the month of September, allowing new members and Strive to Thrive contestants to join with the first month for free.

For Hunt, winning was never her goal, but rather making a healthy change for herself. However, along the way she also built camaraderie with the other contestants, which she found to be the biggest takeaway from the competition. Shes already signed up for the Mission Slim Possible Program offered by OhioHealth, a body fat loss competition, where she hopes to achieve another goal she sets for herself.

Generally when I talked to the other (Strive to Thrive) contestants that was pretty much what they saidthat they wanted to make this change for themselves, and I think that's important," Hunt said. "We have to take care of ourselves and even more so this year than ever before.

Teens’ TV Shows and Increasing Screen Time – How Parents Should Handle It? – Programming Insider

Binge-worthy or miss-the-school-and-F-the-grades-worthy teen dramas? Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. are full of addictive TV shows for teens with hundreds and thousands of hours worth of content and algorithms that encourage binge-watch. Before many of us realize, we are already on to watching the next episode.

Kids with non-stop access to computers, smartphones, and the internet in their rooms end up with significantly higher screen time than those who dont. Kids need entertainmentwe get thatand finding an exciting show really makes up for that. But as adults, we are more profound in our choices. The same cant be said about our children.

TV Shows and Increasing Screen Time of Teens

Streaming services are seeing teen dramas as a high-value genre, largely attributed to the ample time kids have. But more business for these streaming companies come at a cost not inclusive to them but to their viewers. Thats right. We all pay for the screen time entertainment, not just with the subscriptions but also through our time. And kids need to understand the opportunity cost of hooking up to screens. And only you, as their guardians, can do that.

As a parent, struggling to manage the increased screen time of your child due to TV shows? Below are some tips for parents to ensure a healthy lifestyle of their children:

Go for smaller sessions: It will be best to divide the screen time into smaller sessions. Ask your child to take a break after 30 minutes of watching a show or playing an online game. Ask your child to stand up and walk around.

Physical activity is a must: Tell the importance of the physical activity to your child for a healthy mind and body. Engage them in some outdoor sports activities.

Encourage teens for extracurricular activities: If your child has an interest in extracurricular activities, then encourage your child to participate. This can include activities like debating, music swimming, and much more.

No devices before bed: Teenagers should get a sleep of 8 to 10 hours. Take the devices from your child 1 or 2 hours before bedtime, so that they can sleep well.

Encourage children to socialize with friends: Instead of chatting with friends on social media platforms, ask your child to go out and meet them. Ask your child to invite friends at home, play in-ground, or make a plan for the movie.

Let me get this straight. The above rules are tough because they are about following a routine. And kids hate that. But its doable if your kids dont already have their awful screen time routines place. This implies, kids need to be taught about screen time rules as early as possible. But, if your child has already been down the lane with years of unmanaged screen time, you might have to take some more aggressive measures, like the inclusion of parental controls to their devices.

How a Parental Control App Can Help?

When we are talking about parental controls, it doesnt only refer to built-in features to restrict the usage of your child; we are talking about going one step further and using third-party parental control for properly monitoring kids online activities on their devices and much more. Now, the next question circling in your mind will be: If there are built-in parental controls available, why the heck would I spend on a third-party solution. The answer is very simple. The built-in parental controls are not meant to tackle the screen time and screen addiction issues amongst kids. They are designed to keep your kids safe during their online browsing and social networking sessions.

What is XNSPY?

XNSPY is going to change the way you monitor your kids online activities. With this, parents can know what their children are doing online, with whom they are chatting, what places they are visiting, and remote access to your childs devices for maximum control.

How XNSPY Will Be Helpful?

Once installed, XNSPY will work flawlessly. Parents can track different things on their childrens devices remotely. Parents can check all the bookmarked websites. Furthermore, you can also check your childs browsing history to see what kind of shows are being watched. If your child is watching age-restricted content, you can talk about it with your child.

There is also an instant alert feature that parents can use to set alerts on specific TV show names whenever they are typed in the search bar of a streaming app. Parents will get an instant alert when a similar word is typed on a device by their child. You can use this feature for specific contacts, locations, and more as well as per your needs.

Moving on, if a teenager likes to visit the cinema without your permission and you have a doubt. You can clear this doubt by tracking the location of your child. You can geo-fence all the nearby cinemas to your home. As soon the teen will enter or leave the cinema, the parent will get an alert on their device.

Parents can also take live screenshots of childrens mobile to see what they are doing on their mobile phones. If you notice them watching shows or movies most of the time, then you could do an intervention.

Last but not the least, you can also remotely monitor the videos on your childs mobile. There is a possibility that your child might have downloaded some TV shows on mobile. In this way, your child can watch it anytime without any restrictions. But the best part is, you can remove the mobile data remotely as well. Before doing this, talk to your kid. If your child understands your point of view, then there is no need to delete the data. Moreover, you can remotely check the downloaded apps on your childs mobile. They might have downloaded video streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, and others in their devices to watch different shows.

Requirements to Use XNSPY

The majority of parental control apps come with different subscription plans. The same is the case with XNSPY. The user can pick any plan as per their needs. There are two plans. The Basic version comes with limited features and has a price tag of $4.99 per month. The Premium version boasts all the features unlocked at a price tag of $7.49 per month.

To download the app in your Android phones, simply download the installation file from the apps official website and follow the instructions to run the program. In the case of an iPhone, you will also need iTunes and Xnspy installed on a computer. The app will work fine with Android devices running version above 4.0 and for iOS devices, it should be above 6.0

What Are the Ayurveda Doshas? Vata, Kapha, and Pitta Explained – Healthline

Ayurveda is one of the worlds oldest forms of holistic medicine and still widely used today.

Combining physical, psychological, and spiritual health, Ayurveda focuses on whole-body healing and states that a persons dosha, a type of bodily humor, determines their personality and health (1).

Though Ayurveda translates to the science of life in English, many health professionals question the belief of personal doshas due to a lack of scientific proof.

Meanwhile, proponents of Ayurveda claim that adopting dosha-specific health practices leads to balance and well-being (1, 2).

This article tells you all you need to know about the Ayurvedic doshas and whether science backs them up.

Ayurvedic medicine is based on the idea that the world is made up of five elements aakash (space), jala (water), prithvi (earth), teja (fire), and vayu (air) (2, 3).

A combination of each element results in three humors, or doshas, known as vata, kapha, and pitta. These doshas are believed to be responsible for a persons physiological, mental, and emotional health (2, 3).

Every person is said to have a unique ratio of each dosha, usually with one standing out more than the others. For example, a person may be mostly pitta while another may be mostly vata. An Ayurvedic practitioner can help you determine your dosha (2, 3).

A persons unique ratio of vata, kapha, and pitta is said to define their Ayurvedic constitution, a blueprint to achieve optimal health.

Though theres little evidence to prove the legitimacy of doshas, many proponents of Ayurveda point to a lack of studies and funding on the subject. Rather than discrediting the practice, they believe more research should be done to support its efficacy.

According to Ayurveda, a persons health is based on their dosha a balance of the five elements of the world known as air, earth, space, water, and fire.

Based on centuries of Ayurvedic practice, an Ayurvedic practitioner can determine ones dosha based on physical, emotional, mental, and behavioral characteristics. Heres a general overview of each dosha.

Vata consists mostly of the two elements air and space (also known as ether) and is generally described as cold, light, dry, rough, flowing, and spacious. Autumn represents vata for its cool, crisp days.

Those with the vata dosha are usually described as slim, energetic, and creative. Theyre known for thinking outside the box but can become easily distracted. Whats more, their mood is highly dependent on the weather, people around them, and foods they eat (4, 5).

Strengths: learn quickly, highly creative, multitasker, kind-hearted, flexible, on the go, naturally slim

Weaknesses: forgetful, anxious, unstable mood, can get overwhelmed easily, highly sensitive to the cold, has trouble sleeping, irregular appetite and eating patterns, prone to digestive issues and gas, poor circulation (cold hands and feet)

According to Ayurveda, for optimal health, a vata-dominant person should follow a regular daily routine, manage stress through meditation and other calming activities, and maintain a warm body temperature by avoiding cold weather and consuming warm foods and drinks (4, 5).

Kapha (pronounced kuffa) is based on earth and water. It can be described as steady, stable, heavy, slow, cold, and soft. Spring is known as kapha season, as many parts of the world slowly exit hibernation.

People with this dosha are described as strong, thick-boned, and caring. Theyre known for keeping things together and being a support system for others. Kapha-dominant people rarely get upset, think before acting, and go through life in a slow, deliberate manner (4, 5).

Strengths: empathetic, caring, trusting, patient, calm, wise, happy, romantic, strong bones and joints, healthy immune system

Weaknesses: prone to weight gain, slow metabolism, sluggishness, over-sleeping, breathing issues (i.e., asthma, allergies), higher risk of heart disease, mucus buildup, susceptible to depression, needs regular motivation and encouragement

For good health, a kapha-dominant person should focus on regular exercise, a healthy diet, maintain a warm body temperature (e.g., by sitting in a sauna or eating warm food), and establish a regular sleep routine (4, 5).

Known for being associated with a tenacious personality, the pitta dosha is based on fire and water. Its commonly described as hot, light, sharp, oily, liquid, and mobile. Summer is known as pitta season for its sunny, hot days.

People with pitta are said to usually have a muscular build, be very athletic, and serve as strong leaders. Theyre highly motivated, goal-oriented, and competitive. Still, their aggressive and tenacious nature can be off-putting to some people, which can lead to conflict (4, 5).

Strengths: intelligent, purposeful, learns quickly, self-determined, masters skills easily, strong desire for success, strong, natural leaders, quick metabolism, good circulation, healthy skin and hair

Weaknesses: impatient, prone to conflict, always hungry, mood swings when hungry, prone to acne and inflammation, sensitive to hot temperatures

Those with a pitta-dominant dosha should focus on work-life balance and avoid extreme heat (e.g., weather, spicy food) (4, 5).

Though its believed that each person has a unique constitution, they generally fall under one of three main dosha types vata, kapha, and pitta based on their body type, personality, and sensitivities.

Despite many self-reported success stories, theres very little evidence linking a balanced dosha to good health.

Despite this, Ayurvedic medicine believes like attracts like, as well as that opposites help a person achieve balance and harmony. For each dosha, there are recommended foods, exercises, and lifestyle practices to achieve balance.

Though limited evidence supports the idea, following an Ayurvedic diet based on a persons dosha is believed to help them balance their dosha and achieve optimal health (6, 7):

When a person feels unbalanced, its recommended they avoid foods that are similar to their dosha. Moreover, a person may need to change their diet based on the seasons, such as by eating warm foods in the winter (6, 7).

Although many people claim they feel better on an Ayurvedic diet, no studies show that it helps balance ones dosha, nor that digestion changes based on the time of year (7).

Though most foods recommended on the diet are beneficial to health, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and minimally processed foods, its important to work with a health professional when making big changes to your diet.

Depending on your unique dosha, your Ayurvedic practitioner may recommend specific types of exercise:

Most research on exercise and Ayurveda surrounds slow, gentle movements, such as yoga and tai chi. These exercises have been shown to have numerous health benefits, such as improved quality of life, physical fitness, and stress management (8, 9, 10).

Though choosing certain types of exercise based on your personality and sensitivities may make sense theoretically, no research proves that doing so is effective.

Ayurvedic medicine encourages whole-body healing, which includes physical, mental, and emotional health. This can include practices like yoga, meditation, mindful eating, sleep hygiene, spending time by yourself and with others, and managing your work-life balance (11).

In particular, its recommended to have a daily routine that encompasses these healthy lifestyle practices. In Ayurveda, a regular routine is believed to keep you in sync with the elements and promote good health (11).

Interestingly, one study found vata-dominant people were more likely to report poor sleep, while kapha-dominant people were more likely to oversleep and nap (12).

Beyond this, no research supports the Ayurvedic elements and routines. However, daily routines and pre-planning your day are associated with healthier lifestyle habits, such as exercise, healthy eating, an
d improved sleep (13, 14, 15, 16).

Whats more, incorporating mindfulness and meditation has been shown to lower stress and improve quality of life, creativity, and decision making (17, 18, 19, 20)

While no evidence supports lifestyle habits based on personal doshas, incorporating these healthy habits into your daily routine is still encouraged.

Despite many claims, little research shows that diet, exercise, or other lifestyle practices will help you balance your dosha. However, many lifestyle habits promoted by Ayurveda can still benefit your health.

Ayurvedic medicine is widely used today for its focus on whole-body healing.

According to Ayurveda, an imbalanced dosha leads to poor health and disease. Therefore, opting for food, exercise, and lifestyle habits based on your dosha is believed to promote optimal health and balance.

Many proponents of Ayurveda claim that good health is based on ones dosha, yet theres little evidence to support this.

While research on the Ayurvedic doshas is lacking, incorporating the many healthy lifestyle habits of Ayurveda into your routine is a great way to promote good health.

Why Ultimate Should Pursue the Olympics – ultiworld.com

The chance to showcase our sport and its values would be unparalleled.

In 2013, the World Flying Disc Federation was formally recognized by the International Olympic Committee and is now one of 42 International Federations whose sports may be considered for the Olympic Programme. Ultimate has been a medal sport in The World Games since 2001, the largest multi-sports games behind the Olympics. Ultimate athletes will chase their next World Games gold in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, in 2022. WFDF specifically stated in its Strategic Plan for 2019-2024 that pursuit of inclusion in the Olympics was one of its seven strategic goals, and we are actively pursuing a spot on the 2028 Summer Programme in Los Angeles.

So why would we pursue this goal? Should we be pursuing this? Some members of our community have questioned whether disc sports should get involved with the Olympics, given the scandals that have arisen around the Games and the IOC in the past, and others worry that this strategic pursuit will mean that other priorities are ignored or that the sport could be ruined if in trying to get into the Olympics we become just like any other sport. It has also been suggested that the organizational infrastructure for ultimate and other disc sports would not be able to handle a huge influx of new athletes if Olympics participation were achieved. These are important questions, ones worth exploring.

We see three main benefits to achieving Olympic inclusion. First, the visibility and recognition that a sport receives by being featured in the Olympics supports a sport in two main ways. The Olympic Effect introduces a whole new generation of youngsters to a sport and can lead to potentially explosive growth. Disc sports are relatively low cost and extremely sustainable, which can make them extremely attractive in developing nations. The other benefit is the financial support that can come with Olympic participation. Many of our organizing bodies in disc sports could do so much more to support the growth and development of our sports with additional resources, and the Olympic visibility would attract non-endemic sponsorship and official government funding to expand the programs already being managed by our national and local groups.

Second, inclusion on the program would give us a bully pulpit from which to tell our story, which is truly unique. We would be able to show the world referees arent necessary and that a self-officiated sport works. We would be able to showcase our mixed division of play and provide proof that gender equality can be put in practice in elite competition. And we would be able to communicate to the world what our vision of spirit of the game means and remind the world of the self-described Olympic goal: The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

Third, the Olympics are the pinnacle of multi-sports Games, giving athletes the opportunity to compete against the best in their sport once every four years on a highly visible, prestigious international stage. The sheer scale of the Olympics, the number of countries and sports involved, and the recognition it provides make this a remarkable experience for the participants.

But let us be clear, we fully understand that there are issues with involvement in the Olympics. First, we recognize that the Olympic Movement has its flaws, as does all of sport, because it is a mirror of global society. Unfortunately, all too many large institutional organizations involving lots of money can bring out the worst in some people, and we have seen issues arise in the past in this institution too, with vote-buying, personal enrichment, doping, and illegal betting, among others.

However, there appears to be a very real effort to combat these issues. IOC President Thomas Bach, in a speech to the International Partnership Against Corruption in Sport (IPACS) on December 6, 2018, in London stated: We are a values-based organization. We stand for the values of excellence, respect and fair play. In this sense, we have the double duty to uphold good governance and integrity in everything we doThe IOC remains committed to fight corruption in sport at all levelsIntegrity entails credibility, and corruption threatens the very credibility of sports organizations, as well as competitions. He reaffirmed this commitment in late 2019 at the second IPACS meeting.

Second, there have been concerns about the social impact of the Olympic Games, whether the impact on host cities and their inhabitants, the rights of the athletes, etc. The IOC is attempting to address these and many more issues in its Olympic Agenda 2020, released in 2014, which among other things changed the approach in host city bidding, initiated a move from an incumbent sport based to an event based programme, included a non-discrimination clause for sexual orientation in its Charter, targeted gender equality and encouraged mixed gender team events, and committed the IOC to improving transparency. These were further expanded upon in the introduction of the IOC New Norm in 2018. Most recently, the IOC asked their Athletes commission to review again the IOC Charter Rule 50 limitations on demonstrations or protests.

Third, from an organizational perspective, inclusion in the Olympics is not an end goal in and of itself but rather a means to an end. We want to see our sport grow. We want to promote women in sport. We want to introduce the sport to new communities who may benefit from a low cost sport that promotes fair play, mutual respect, dispute resolution, and a healthy lifestyle, whether in the developing parts of the world or with new socioeconomic groups in the inner cities in developed countries. The recognition and credibility that would come with Olympic inclusion would introduce an entirely new and far-broader generation of young athletes to our sport and trigger our sport as Sport for All in all countries. The need for a more inclusive approach has been highlighted in the recent Black Lives Matter protests we have seen across the globe and it is incumbent upon us to be more available to new constituencies.

Fourth, the prospect of significant growth can be daunting, but it is worth it. It will take more coordination and resources, and we recognize that organizers at the international, national, city, local level, and school levels are already stretched. However, we also need to realize that our current operational strategies will have to change, and that new resources will come with growth and recognition. Of course, this will require the building of a more robust infrastructure, additional training, and SafeSport controls, among many other things, but broadening the base of the pyramid to greatly expand our youth and other programs will make us stronger as a sport over the long-term.

In the end, we have also asked what the majority of the playing community wants and have a couple clear data points. USA Ultimate, in the research phase of its latest strategic planning process in February 2018, asked survey respondents to name their Top 5 Must Have Vision Themes out of 13 choices. With 7,758 respondents, getting ultimate in the Olympics ranked second only after inclusiveness and diversity, and ahead of Spirit of the Game thriving, getting ultimate as a varsity sport, or having the sport widely broadcast and sponsored. WFDF has done several global surveys, most recently in 2019 (1,943 respondents) and 2016 (5,186 respondents), and asked the community how high a priority getting disc sports into the Olympics should be. A full 52.9% in 2019 said ultimate should be either the highest or at least an extremely high priority (53.4% in 2016), 36.9% (36.2%) said it should be pursued but not to the exclusion of other priorities, and only 10.2% (10.4%) said it should either not be a priority or not be pursued.

In
conclusion, at WFDF, we view inclusion in the Olympic Programme as worthwhile because of the ways it can further so many of our highest priority objectives: growth, gender equity, inclusiveness, diversity, promulgation of the values and attitude of spirit of the game, and a healthy lifestyle. The Olympics remain the pinnacle of the world of sport and the benefits of being in the Games would result in a net positive for our sport and its athletes. Accordingly, WFDF continues to work closely with USA Ultimate to be considered for inclusion in the LA2028 Olympics.

WAFC Executive Director Tim Smith argues the case for why ultimate should stop chasing the Olympics.

What Jennifer Lopez really looks like without makeup – The List

Jennifer Lopez hasn't been shy about sharing how she keeps her skin looking so incredible. First up: slather on the SPF. She told Hollywood Life, "I'm rarely in the sun, but if I am, I wear a lot of sunscreen. I've never been one to take a lot of sun, which is why my skin has maintained itself. And I don't drink or smoke or have caffeine. That really wrecks your skin as you get older." She also constantly drinks water and makes sure to snack on plenty of fruits and vegetables (via People).

Of course, JLo's amazing skin doesn't just come from her healthy lifestyle. Naturally, there are products involved. She told People that she loves glycolic acid "to get that healthy glow and clear skin." She also washes off her makeup at night religiously. While all that sounds overwhelming, there's one aspect of her beauty routine that's perfect for lazy girls: sleeping. "The number one tip is to always get enough sleep. I can't stress this enough. Ideally I would love to get nine or 10 hours of sleep, but either way, I always make sure I get at least eight," she told InStyle. Not only is it good for her skin, sleep must be why she's been able to resist the siren call of caffeine.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Brewer, a native of Sarasota, is playing a critical role in the U.S. Navys efforts to maintain a healthy and ready fighting force in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic.

As a hospital corpsman working at the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit Groton, Connecticut, Brewers skills are vital to maintaining the health of the sailors in the New England area, and by extension, the readiness of the Navys operational ships and submarines on which they serve.

"The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic brought an invisible enemy to our shores and changed the way we operate as a Navy," said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. "The fight against this virus is a tough one, but our sailors are tougher. We must harden our Navy by continuing to focus on the health and safety of our forces and our families. The health and safety of our sailors and their families is, and must continue to be, our number one priority."

As part of the Navy medicine team, Brewer protects sailors and their families, many of whom deploy around the world supporting national interests here at home.

"Were doing everything we can with extremely short notice and were making it happen," Brewer said. "Im glad to be a part of figuring all of this out and slowly getting back to a sense of normalcy."

Brewer is a 2008 Sarasota High School graduate. According to Brewer, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Sarasota.

"I grew up being very physically active and can relate that a healthy lifestyle is hugely important to our immune systems and survivability of potentially deadly diseases like COVID-19," Brewer said.

Another COVID-19 Myth: Low Body Fat and Healthy Lifestyle Don’t Prevent Infection – Newsmax

Several posts on Facebook claim being thin and having a healthy lifestyle are protective traits that reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19. According to Forbes, statistically, obesity is the most common risk factor for severe disease with over 30% of the population affected, but experts warn that doesnt translate into immunity for people in a healthy weight range. You dont get a COVID-19 pass just because you are fit.

According to USA Today, one of the Facebook posts, from Psychedelic Adventure said:

Not sure if you want to hearhis, but if you have an immune system and if you managed your weight, avoided processed foods, didnt drink alcohol, exercise regularly, get proper sleep, get sunlight, consume no sugar and actually give a damn about your health, your immune system and body will do its job and you wont have to be afraid of a virus or disease.

Another said, The virus is only killing off obese people who never lifted weights or worked out a day in their lives, according to USA Today. Both claims are not based on evidence, and there have been numerous reports of marathon runners, body builders and other highly fit individuals who not only have contracted COVID-19 but also have suffered severe, life-threatening complications.

For example, Joshua Fisk, a 47-year-old urologist and marathon runner, nearly died after a bout with COVID-19 resulted in a lingering 104-degree fever that lasted for days.

Nobody is immune to COVID, unless theyve had it already, Dr. Leora Horwitz, of the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Science at NYU Langone, told USA Today. It doesnt matter how healthy you are, how young you are, how few diseases you have, how many marathons youve runnobodys immune.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists medical conditions that increase your risk of severe illness that include not only obesity, but also cancer, kidney disease, serious heart conditions and other underlying medical conditions.

While healthy people may be at lower risk for COVID-19, they may also be virus spreaders and should follow the recommended safety guidelines of wearing masks and observing social distancing like everyone else, said Horwitz, according to USA Today.

We owe it to our community to do what we can to reduce the burden of disease for everybody, not just for us individually ourselves, she said.

Is Retiring In Spain Worth It? Heres What You Need To Know – STL.News

(STL.News) As retirement approaches you may be starting to think about how you want your twilight years to look. And for many, this means living a Mediterranean lifestyle. If you can imagine yourself while away the hours on a sunny beach and then hitting the tapas bars after dark, then Spain should be on your list.

But, what is the reality of returning in Spain like? Surely, there must be some challenges? Anytime you are considering an international move there need to be things to consider.

In this article, I will go over several of the things to be aware of before booking your one way flight to Spain.

Spain is a small country with a climate that varies wildly depending on where you live. You can find just about any type of weather you prefer, but you also could find weather that doesnt suit you if you dont choose well.

For instance, many people envision year round warm to hot weather with swimming in the Mediterranean for most of the year being an option. For this, you need to look at properties in Southern Spain. To get a feel for the area you can stay for a while in the Vista Lago Residences before you commit to buying.

If you like more temperate environs, then head up into the Pyrenees and find four seasons that stay mild so you dont have any extreme temperatures. If the rain of the Pacific Northwest is your thing, then Galicia on Spains Atlantic coast is the right place for you.

Spain loves its bureaucracy so be prepared to have lots of papers stamped at several different offices. Getting your residence is going to be a headache but is doable. If you plan to live there permanently, then you need a long term visa that allows you to stay in Spain indefinitely as long as you continue to renew the paperwork.

If you only plan to stay less than 90 days then you dont need any visa at all, but you will have restrictions when it comes to opening bank accounts and working.

The cost of living can be more or less than you experienced when living in the US depending on where you are coming from and where you end up. The closer to the beach, the higher the prices. Or, if you want to live in a city like Madrid or Barcelona, then your cost is going to be much higher than a small village.

If you are coming from California or the Northeast US, then you will no doubt find the cost of living very favorable. Particularly with the cost of fresh food and health care being much more affordable.

Even eating out is much more affordable, especially if you like to eat the tapas or small appetizers that are ubiquitous.

There is little downside to retiring in Spain as it has all the modern conveniences you would expect, low cost of living, high quality of life and a very healthy lifestyle. Where it falls flat is the insane amount of bureaucracy. If you can get used to wasting time in various offices then you can enjoy your life there.

Gemma Collins shows off her new strength as she lifts her bike with one arm as she continues losing weight in – The Sun

GEMMA Collins showed off her incredible strength as she lifted her bike off the ground with one arm.

The proud diva, who struggled to complete a Joe Wicks workout at the start of lockdown, has embarked on a new healthy lifestyle and it's clearly paying off.

9

Riding her mountain bike in a forest in the Essex countryside, Gemma stopped to do some arm lifts with her trusty steed.

"Arm press bike rides NATURE," she commented on Instagram.

Earlier this month, Gemma's ex-boyfriend James Argent cruelly branded her "a hippo" and a "fat f***" in a bitter war of words before their split.

The reality TV stars' furious texts were revealed as their on/off relationship came to an explosive end.

9

9

Gemma earlier shared messages between the couple on Instagram, but the posts have since been deleted.

The ranting texts began with Gemma saying: "What man pays for another woman!!!"

Arg replied: "Insensitive," while Gemma continued: "And the woman that saved your life has to pay for herself!!!"

Her ex then hit back: "You are supposed to be treating me you hippo."

Revealing the moment Gemma called it quits, she wrote: "We're over."

Sharing earlier screengrabs of their heated conversation, Arg had sent her a plane emoji in reply to a picture of flight details.

Gemma told him: "I'll take a mate, I'm not booking it. You said you would be a gentleman!"

A furious Arg shouted back: "YOU FAT F**K. IVE JUST LOST ANOTHER 2000."

Gemma then shared a screenshot of cruel pig emojis she'd been sent, although it was unclear if these were also from Arg.

Their angry confrontation was revealed following The Sun Online's exclusive story about Gemma dumping her on/off boyfriend after he told her that he wants an open relationship.

9

Sources close to the pair said Arg, 32, was inspired by claims US actor Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith had been intimate with other people during their marriage.

Gemma, 39, stuck by Arg throughout his drugs and alcohol battle and was eager to start a family together.

Earlier this year, Arg bravely revealed he is a cocaine addict and suffered two near-fatal overdoses at home before finally seeking help from his best friend Mark Wright at Christmas.

9

But despite helping him get clean, Gemma was left devastated when the ex Towie star spoke to his girlfriend after returning from Spain, telling her that he wants to move there.

Speaking to The Sun Online, a source explained: "Arg went to Spain and he told Gemma that he wants to go back there forever and be in an open relationship like Jada and Will.

"Gemma is completely shocked and has been left absolutely heartbroken, especially after sticking by him for so long."

Gemma posted on Instagram this evening urging her followers to "find the strength to walk away" as she shared the "Top 10 Signs of Emotional Abuse In A Relationship".

9

The list included pointers such as "says things to upset or frighten you", "swears at you or calls you names", and "sulks and refuses to talk about issues" - among others.

She captioned the post: "To all who have suffered in lock down or are suffering in general please please find your strength to walk away

"There is a better life for you filled with love and respect and always remember the problem isnt within you its within them.

"Walk away its never too late. Something will happen one day and you will just say enough is enough. Its in that moment the nightmare is over.

"This is when you find your strength and this is when you will learn self love".

The Sun Online contacted Gemma and Arg's reps for comment.

These areas include healthy diet, exercise, hygienic habits, timely preventive practices, and such which got relegated to the backburner over the years.

"This pandemic has taught us that medical science may not have readymade answers to emerging health crises. We need to go back to the basics by putting focus on preventive measures and healthy living," said Rajput. The programme, in association with hygiene brand Savlon, started with a webinar 'Illness to Wellness The Yoga Way' wherein health and yoga experts spoke about yoga's ability to mitigate threats caused by viruses, including COVID-19, and other ailments. All the speakers agreed that yoga has proven to be a tool for mental and physical well-being over the centuries.

As the focus on boosting immunity grows due to the widespread COVID- 19 pandemic, this ancient spiritual practice should be assimilated into daily life, they said. Dr Basavraddi informed that the Department of Science & Technology under the Ministry of Science & Technology, has also evinced interest in understanding the benefits of yoga for COVID patients and is undertaking a couple of studies on this. "We are expanding the programme to include family members, police personnel, medical professionals.who came in contact with COVID patients," he said.

At the webinar, Rajiv Chandran, Director and office-incharge, UN Information Centre, said that the COVID-19 pandemic has completely transformed the concept of wellness. Now, wellness is not merely an individual's concern. It is a community strategy, being viewed in a very broad perspective of peoples relationship with the planet and the society. Talking about the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, Dr HR Nagendra, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Sansthana, said, A strong immune system can withstand all kinds of viruses. The white blood cells act as a gigantic robust army to defend the body. Stress weakens our immune system, but practicing yoga daily can make it robust.
