COVID-19: Ayurvedas emphasis on healthy food habits and good sleep – The Financial Express

To the extent possible one should try to adopt the practice of having early and light dinner. (Representational image: IE)

ByBhuvaneswari Ravindran

Ayurveda recommends that good food habits have to be followed up with a healthy lifestyle and exercising. In these lock down days, when we are stuck at home, engaged in indoor activities only, most people are forced to follow a sedentary lifestyle, with little or no physical activity. Most important routine that we should adopt is having a fixed time for waking up. Morning hours being the most energetic and fresh time, getting up early gives a good kick start to an active day.

Exercising daily for at least half an hour, on an empty stomach, is important. Breathing exercises like Pranayama help in managing respiratory ailments, improve immunity, lower stress and enhance the quality of life and are recommended even for people suffering from COVID-19. Maintaining hygiene of the body and surroundings is important.

Take a bath preferably twice a day, in room temperature water, depending on climatic conditions. Taking bath immediately after exercise is not recommended.

Ayurveda on importance of early dinner and good sleep

To the extent possible one should try to adopt the practice of having early and light dinner. While talking of early dinner, I remember the advice given by Padma Shri P.K. Warrior of Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala that we should emulate birds, who take their dinner much before sunset and retire to their nest early.

Good sleep is a sign of good health. Our routine should be that of early to bed and early to get up and not sleeping during day time. These healthy lifestyle routines are easily adaptable and with proper food intake, we can sure build up our immunity level to fight the Virus.

With so much gloomy news floating around us, the Doctors concluding advice is worth emulating STAY HOME STAY SAFE encourage and transmit only positive thoughts. Those of us who are at home and with family, let us fully utilise this Stay Home time, spending more quality time with family, doing things which give pleasure to our mind. Meanwhile let us also pause can we be of some help to those around who are away from family or those who are trying hard to make both ends meet?

The long-drawn fight against Coronavirus is on in right earnest and there is no reason why we should choose to be the losers.

We can do more to help the elderly cope with the COVID-19 crisis – The Jerusalem Post

Does the society really wish to help the elderly cope with the COVID-19 crisis? If so, why does not it address the problem at the root? There is a lot of uncertainty about the COVID-19 statistics. Yet, at least one piece of evidence is clear: older persons are at the greatest risk. And this simply means that the aging process and its resulting multiple aging-related diseases (multimorbidity) are the main determinants for disability, hospitalizations, severe clinical outcomes and deaths with COVID-19 and thus are responsible for the devastating damages to the economy and the entire society. There is now a broad social realization that the elderly are the main risk group that needs to be protected. Then why not make the next logical step and realize the crucial role of the degenerative aging processes, the diminishing resilience and immunity of the aging persons, and the corresponding vital need to therapeutically ameliorate these degenerative aging processes to improve immunity and resilience? This could help mitigate the present crisis and avert future ones. This is the essence of the geroscience approach to the COVID-19 crisis that aims to therapeutically improve multiple aging-related diseases by intervening into their underlying aging processes, such as the process of immunosenescence. A recent position paper Geroscience in the Age of COVID-19 published in the prestigious scientific journal Aging and Disease by some of the leading figures in the field of geroscience, from the US and Israel, promotes the geroscience-based preventive interventions. In addition to the healthy lifestyle (such as exercise, sufficient sleep and balanced nutrition) known to improve immunity in older persons, the geroscientists advocate for expanding the testing of existing drugs with established safety profiles that can potentially improve the biology of aging, immune mechanisms and resilience (the so called geroprotectors). These include such medications as metformin, rapamycin and their analogues, as well as NAD boosters, senolytics, biological immuno-modulatorors and other prospective geroprotective agents. These interventions showed promise in animal studies and some emerging human trials, though the scientists caution that so far no such treatments have yet been approved as geroprotectors for use in humans. Hence, self-medication with any of these substances is highly discouraged. Yet, the broader clinical testing of the existing, potentially geroprotective drugs, as well as developing new drugs targeting the aging processes, can be an effective long-term line of defense. Alongside the therapies, the geroscientists also advocate for the broader introduction of measurements (biomarkers) of aging, especially measurements of the deteriorating immune system, as potentially powerful means to predict the risks for the elderly, improve treatments and allocate resources for the protection of those who are most in need of it.THEN WHY not support and advance this research? Experience shows that it is not sufficiently supported. Vast funding is now allocated to researching and developing treatments for COVID-19, including some rather unorthodox and uncertain treatments. The calls for research proposals on COVID-19 now mainly focus on reactive treatments and vaccines. But there is insufficient realization that many reactive treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, whenever they are developed, will likely have diminished safety and efficacy in elderly patients who are at the highest risk, precisely because of their impaired immunity and resilience that geroscience aims to enhance. Yet very little support is explicitly announced for developing preventive geroscience-based interventions for improving the underlying aging health. Just compare the over $3.6 billion allocated by the NIH for the COVID-19 response, with only a few million for geroscience-oriented approaches called for by the National Institute on Aging within the NIH. In other places, such as the EU and Israel, such calls for preventive aging interventions are even more difficult, next to impossible, to find. The public awareness and support of such preventive interventions are also comparatively minuscule, compared to some of the massively publicized research directions such as vaccine development. Is the lack of attention to this approach due to our entrenched psychological reluctance to face our aging process that spills over to science? Is it due to ageism in healthcare that generally discriminates against or ignores the special concerns and needs of older persons? Is it the reluctance to think holistically and for the long term? Whatever the psychological impediments, the scientific community and the wide public should think rationally and proactively and give a strong focus and support for aging health interventions. cnxps.cmd.push(function () { cnxps({ playerId: '36af7c51-0caf-4741-9824-2c941fc6c17b' }).render('4c4d856e0e6f4e3d808bbc1715e132f6'); });If there is a lesson to be learned from this crisis, it is arguably the realization of the need to therapeutically address degenerative aging processes to prevent aging-related ill health as a whole. This understanding should translate to public health and research policies supportive of geroscience research, development and clinical application, improving the funding, incentives, education and institutional and public support for the field. Public advocacy should play an essential role for the realization of these goals. An example of such an advocacy effort is the public initiative for Enhancing research, development and education for promoting healthy longevity and preventing aging-related diseases advocated by the associations Vetek (Seniority) the Movement for Longevity and Quality of Life and Disabled, Not Half a Person. With sufficient support and deployment, the preventive geroscience approach may help avoid or mitigate the effects of devastating crises of aging-related ill health presently and for the future. The writer, a PhD, is the chief science officer of Vetek (Seniority) Association the Movement for Longevity and Quality of Life and Disabled, Not Half a Person, Israel.

If youre unable to breathe during a physical task, try reducing the intensity of the activity.

Avoid holding your breath, and breathe deeply to help your body and brain get the oxygen they need. Deep breathing can also help your body relax.

There are ways to avoid physical overexertion while working or doing physical activities.

Follow these tips to prevent physical burnout and injuries:

If you feel mentally exhausted or overwhelmed from work, parenting, or daily stressors, you can take certain steps to help you cope. Some options include:

Psoriasis Biologics and Heart Disease Risk – Everyday Health

People with psoriasis who are on biologic therapies may get an added boost to their overall health: a reduced risk of heart disease.

According to a study published in the September 2020 issue of the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, people who received biologics like adalimumab and ustekinumab for one year to manage their psoriasis had lower levels of a type of coronary plaque called lipid-rich necrotic core (LRNC) compared with people who didnt receive the drugs.

LRNC has been linked with higher risk of heart attack and stroke in people with coronary artery disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes plaque as cholesterol deposits that accumulate on the walls of arteries, causing blockages that can lead to coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is the most common form of heart disease in the United States, affecting an estimated 18 million people, the CDC says.

[Our] current hypothesis is that treatment of psoriasis may result in a lowering of the risk of cardiovascular disease over time, explains Joel M. Gelfand, MD, director of the Psoriasis and Phototherapy Treatment Center at University of Pennsylvanias Perelman School of Medicine Philadelphia, who was one of the coauthors of the new study.

RELATED: The Consumers Guide to Biologics for Psoriasis

It seems biologic therapy as well as phototherapy two commonly used treatments for psoriasis may both work to reduce levels of LRNC in the blood. LRNC is among several leading biomarkers (measurable signs) that can predict future heart attacks, Dr. Gelfand says.

Biologics, which target specific areas of the immune system, have been used for psoriasis treatment since the early 2000s. The biologics used to treat psoriatic disease block the action of a specific type of immune cell a T cell or proteins in the immune system, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin 17-A, or interleukins 12 and 23, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation.

TNF-alpha and the interleukins all play a major role in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

RELATED: 7 Signs You May Need to Change Your Psoriasis Treatment

For the new study, Gelfand and his colleagues enrolled 209 people with psoriasis who had not yet been treated with biologics. Roughly one-half were prescribed biologic therapies to treat their condition, while the rest were not.

LRNC for people in both groups was assessed using coronary computed tomography angiography, with measurements taken at the beginning of the study and, again, one year later.

On average, those who received biologic therapy saw their LRNC decline from 3.12 square millimeters (mm2) to 2.97 mm2 or about 5 percent. Conversely, those who werent on biologic therapy saw LRNC increase from 3.12 to 3.34 mm2, on average a 6 percent rise.

RELATED: 8 Health Conditions Linked to Psoriasis

Although larger studies are needed to confirm the positive effects of biologics on LRNC and heart disease risk, the findings are exciting, Gelfand says, because recent research suggeststhat people with psoriasis are at increased risk for heart disease.

And this risk is more clinically significant in those with more severe skin disease, Gelfand notes. People with psoriasis should be screened for traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol, and they should adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle whether theyre on biologics or not.

Vicksburg physician set to take top spot with state’s medical association – The Vicksburg Post – Vicksburg Post

For a fourth time, a member of Vicksburgs medical community is poised to take the top leadership position with the Mississippi State Medical Association.

Vicksburg pediatrician Dr. Geri Weiland was elected the associations president-elect in August. She becomes association president in August 2021 and will join three other Vicksburg doctors who have held the associations top post.

Drs. Briggs Hopson Jr., Randy Easterling and Dan Edney have each lead the association.

A former resident of Pascagoula, Weiland is a graduate of LSU and the University of Mississippi Medical School and has been practicing at Merit Health River Region since 1983. She was serving as the associations first female speaker of the house in more than 150 years before becoming president-elect.

Im not the first female president, but the fourth Vicksburg president, which I think is another testament to Vicksburgs involvement in organized medicine, she said.

Weiland said her election is an honor and a little scary because its a commitment for a lot of work. Ive been in a leadership position for over 11 years as the vice speaker and speaker, but this is going to be a little bit different to be the spokesperson for the organization.

As president-elect, her primary responsibilities will involve trying to stay up with the associations projects and its goals. She will also be observing association President Dr. W. Mark Horne.

I have a year to learn, she said.

Outside of its work involving public awareness of COVID-19 and assisting medical practices affected by the virus, Weiland said the associations emphasis usually involves its legislative agenda and staying on top of things important to the physicians in the state.

Its mostly about trying to improve the health of Mississippians, Weiland said. A lot of times if you want that to happen you can do it through public service announcements, but you really have to work with the Legislature to get those things done that you hope will help Mississippians.

As president, she said, I feel like I want to promote health for Mississippians and see that we stay strong on vaccinations. Id like to promote healthy eating, healthy lifestyles, vaccinations; all those things are important to me.

As a pediatrician, to me, I realize if you dont get children interested and young people interested in a healthy lifestyle and avoiding those things that are not healthy for you. Its hard to do as an adult, Weiland said. I feel like I have lived long enough to have watched vaccines work. The medical community eliminated smallpox in the world. When I started my practice, polio was eliminated in the U.S. Ive seen it work. I know the importance of it.

Dr. Weiland is married to Michael Weiland Sr. Together they have a son, M. David Weiland Jr., who along with his wife, Courtney, have a son, Charlie.

M. David Weiland Jr., is a pediatric cardiologist at University Medical Center.

John Surratt is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a degree in general studies. He has worked as an editor, reporter and photographer for newspapers in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. He has been a member of The Vicksburg Post staff since 2011 and covers city government. He and his wife attend St. Paul Catholic Church and he is a member of the Port City Kiwanis Club.

How Ryan Maxwell Filled a Void in the Wellness Industry – Influencive

The fountain of youth: fact or fiction? We all have that one friend or family member who never seems to age. They still move about with a teenagers agility, their energy exceeds that of the energizer bunny, and they seem to be virtually pain-free. However, our own morning grunts and groans tend to get louder as we increase our aspirin intake just to survive.

Health and wellness is a multi-trillion dollar a year industry. It seems like everyone on the planet is emptying their wallets, searching for the secrets to a healthy lifestyle. Multiple visits to doctors or health care practitioners mean numerous bills. Not only that, but how many times have you received conflicting information from different professionals?

Ryan Maxwell saw his family struggle with health growing up. They bounced around from specialist to specialist but were never able to attain long-term change. Maxwells entrepreneurial spirit started to show as he began formulating a plan to bridge this gap in the wellness industry from a young age. The future result was a fully integrated health model, Fluid Health and Fitness.

Fluid Health and Fitness concentrates on total wellness, including proper body movement, exercise, and nutrition. Maxwell has seen the benefits of whole wellness firsthand from his clients in their 70s, 80s, and 90s who now engage in life without restriction. Maxwell says that Making my health a priority even in small ways now has vastly changed the course of my future.

Maxwell is a firm believer that knowledge is essential to building and keeping a healthy lifestyle. First and foremost, you have to know what you want from a healthy lifestyle and why you want to change. If you dont know your why, it will be hard to adapt to the how. Once someone has a full understanding of why they are doing something, it is easier to stay motivated. Long lasting results then come from your own bodys education, the knowledge on how to apply what you know, and the support to be consistent.

Of course, there are times when Maxwell runs into clients that are resistant or hesitate to change certain aspects of their life for overall health. In this case, it is essential to provide a greater awareness of health and life choices and the consequences that can come with them. All of our nutritional choices may not have immediate effects. But knowing that your choices today can influence your future can push you enough to make a change for the better.

Free men’s health screenings held on Sept. 26 – The Oakland Press

Studies have found that more men are dying from COVID-19 than women, and women tend to have stronger immune systems than men.

Thats why Dr. Michael Lutz of Birmingham, founder of the MIU Mens Health Foundation, is encouraging men to take charge of their health. The foundation is hosting free drive-through screenings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at 770 W. State Fair Ave., Detroit.

This is an opportunity for those who are delaying their health care services to start them in a very safe environment, said Lutz. Its also a chance to kick off a healthier lifestyle for those who may have been ignoring it. Our screenings save lives, and we have the most in-depth blood screening panel available at a free health event.

Services include vital screenings, a bloodwork panel, flu vaccinations, COVID-19 nasal swab and antibody testing, as well as HIV testing. All tests are offered without participants leaving their vehicles. These free tests will be provided in partnership with Wayne State University Physicians Group and are comprehensively valued at more than $500.

The event provides men age 18 or older with an assessment of their current health and screenings for some of the most treatable diseases. Attendees will learn how to live a healthy lifestyle and will receive information about mens health topics and advances in health care.

Early detection is the single most important aspect of treatment and recovery, said Lutz.

All attendees will receive a box of food courtesy of Gleaners Community Food Bank, containing fresh produce, lean protein and shelf stable items. For those attending on foot, bagged lunches will be provided, courtesy of Jack Aronson and Jacks Roadside BBQ.

More than 100 volunteers and licensed health professionals will operate 10 covered tents where the screenings will take place. They are trained to practice current health safety standards and will be wearing personal protective equipment. Participants are also required to wear face masks.

To reserve a spot, text MHE 2020 to 483-55 or visitTheMensHealthEvent.com. Email questions toinfo@miumenshealthfoundation.org. Detailed descriptions of all blood tests and screenings are available atmiumenshealthfoundation.org/screening-details. Men who choose to participate in the blood screening tests will receive a copy and explanation of their results by text or mail.

Coping and Hoping: Mental Health Tips for Trying Times | University of Michigan – Michigan Medicine

Even before 2020 began, many Americans of all ages had mental health conditions and alcohol or drug issues that werent getting the attention and care that they deserved.

Now, six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, three months into a major social justice movement, two months away from a national election and with school starting, hurricanes blowing, wildfires burning and the economy slumping, its a fair bet that many more people are struggling with mental health concerns.

Thats why Michigan Medicine assembled a panel of experts for a recent webinar to offer concrete steps that might help, and links to further resources for helping to manage overall well-being.

This recording has a wealth of tips, from breathing exercises to family activities to advice about the kinds of healthy lifestyle choices that can bolster mental health and keep alcohol use in check. The U-M Department of Psychiatry also offers a wide range of resources and helpful links in its COVID-19 Toolkit.

If youre feeling overly stressed, depressed, anxious or concerned about your alcohol use or someone close to you is showing such signs you dont have to start with a specialist. In fact, primary care providers such as family doctors, general internists, pediatricians and primary care nurse practitioners, are trained to handle many mental health symptoms, says Jill Schneiderhan, M.D., a U-M family medicine doctor and mental wellness specialist.

So just as you would start by contacting them for a new physical symptom, dont be afraid to contact them about changes to your mental health and substance use. That includes a persistent low mood, finding things less enjoyable, and anxious thoughts that intrude on your everyday life.

Several of the experts focused on the things you can do to improve your mental state, including more regular bed times and wake times, cutting out screen use in bed, keeping up social connections even if its via video chat or phone calls, eating a healthy diet, getting regular physical activity, engaging in a hobby, spending time outside, and engaging with art and music.

Elizabeth Duval, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in the U-M Department of Psychiatry, offers some specific breathing exercises and mindfulness activities that anyone of any age can do, almost anywhere.

Box breathing: Breathe in for a few seconds, hold for a few seconds, breathe out for a few seconds, and hold for a few seconds before breathing in again.

Try the 54321 exercise: Sitting or standing wherever you are, take a moment to notice and name out loud or to yourself five things you can see right now, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste.

When talking with someone, say what you are feeling inside. Just speaking it out loud can actually help defuse the feeling itself

If youre a parent, keep in mind that your children are noticing and reacting to the way youre handling these times, says Polly Gipson, Ph.D., a pediatric psychologist who heads U-Ms Trauma and Grief Clinic. Thats especially true if your family has lost someone to COVID-19, or you belong to a group or live in an area thats being especially affected by current events.

But you can be a model to them by engaging in healthy mental wellbeing self-care and finding ways to focus on positive memories, things to be grateful for, family togetherness because of the lack of scheduled activities, and more. She recommends the CALM method: Communicate with the child to share information, find out what they know and validate their feelings; help them stay Active and creative; Learn how children in general, or your child in particular, show distress; and Model self-care by using positive strategies and sharing them with children.

Childrens future mental health depends in part on how theyre affected by adverse experiences now, both their own and those that their larger community is going through. If you notice troubling behavior in the children in your life, speaking up to get help can make a major difference.

Alcohol and cannabis sales have shot up during the past six months, and jokes about drinking or using marijuana-derived products to cope with these times are rampant on social media. This is typical during stressful times, says Mark Ilgen, Ph.D., the addiction psychologist who directs the U-M Addiction Treatment Services. But he warns that as time goes on, what was once a short-term coping mechanism could develop into a substance-use problem.

Fortunately, he says, support groups, twelve-step groups and addiction care specialists have pivoted to offer online help. And newer medications can help people who have developed a dependence on alcohol, opioids and more. If youre not sure you need this level of help, he notes that many people can cut back on their substance use on their own, by setting targets for themselves including limits on daily or weekly alcohol or cannabis intake. If you find you cant stay within these self-imposed limits, thats a time to seek help. Find more information on the U-M Addiction Treatment Services COVID-19 Addiction & Recovery Resources page.

Above all else, the experts note, if you or someone youre in contact with have been feeling hopeless or even suicidal, its crucial to get help. Dont shy away from discussing the topic, and get in touch with a primary care provider if its not an urgent situation. For urgent or life-threatening situations, contact the National Suicide Prevention hotline at 800-273-8255 or call 911.

The partnership empowers the aging Hispanic population with necessary tools to support their health by providing access to healthy nutrition, as well as nutrition education and fitness programs to promote healthy aging. "Our Nutrition for Zero Hunger campaign is designed to do one thing: eradicate hunger around the world. Over the six-year partnership, the Company has contributed nearly $200,000 to support ongoing programs, including over $60,000 of healthy nutrition products. In 2020, due to the overwelming needs of the community, the Company further supported Casa Iris residents with healthy nutrition needs, including individual nutrition packages containing products, blenders, healthy snacks and nutrition education materials including tips and heathy recipes.

The continued partnership under NFZH supports NHCOA's health and well-being programs, which consist of training sessions focused on health priorities including prevention and risk factors of diabetes, obesity, and cancer, and also promotes heathy eating habits and physical activity.

"We've seen how accessible health information can motivate people to do amazing things for themselves, their families and their communities," said Dr. Yanira Cruz, President and CEO of NHCOA. "We're glad to work with a Company dedicated to providing food insecure Hispanic older adults with the nutrition and educated they need to improve their health and happiness."

I Learned Proper Portion Control Through WW And Lost 107 Pounds In 2 Years – Women’s Health

My name is Katy Allen (@kallen_cooks), and I am 23. I currently live in St. Louis, Missouri, where I work as a labor and delivery nurse. I joined WW (formerly Weight Watchers) and learned proper portion controland I feel like my healthiest, happiest self.

My weight has fluctuated up and down my entire life. As a child and throughout middle school, I was heavier than my close friends and family members, and very aware of it. I was told I was just "big boned" and born "the opposite" of my tall and skinny sister.

My self worth revolved around my body image and how I was perceived by others, even at a young age. I would put myself on cleanses or fad diets, and spend hours exercising in the evening. Then I would binge on anything I could find in the pantry. This was a revolving cycle, and it was just my normal.

Once I began high school, I got into dance and joined the competitive poms team. I was in better shape those years but still had a very poor relationship with my body image. I saw myself as bigger than the other girls, and always felt self conscious in group settings. Throughout this time I had a poor sense of portion control and continued to eat mindlessly.

My senior year of high school through the end of my freshman year of college, I kicked it into high gear with exercise and healthier eating. I lost around 20 pounds. This was the first time I was ever able to lose a significant amount of weight, and I was hooked. I was running more than five miles a day, tracking my calories, and going to the gym before school at 6 a.m.

But gradually this lifestyle became less feasible with nursing classes, an ankle injury, and my first experiences with depression and anxiety. I stopped exercising and returned to an unhealthy diet of fast food, sugar, and whatever was accessible. By the end of college, I had gained around 80 pounds. I graduated college at my heaviest weight ever, 253 pounds at 21 years old.

I hardly slept and was chronically fatigued. Walking up a flight of stairs would leave me breathless and my joints would ache. My ankles and knees were in pain to the point that I was taking Aleve most days of the week and wearing a brace.

My blood pressure and blood glucose levels were high as well. My doctor was concerned that I was developing prediabetes and hypertension that would need to be managed with medication. These health problems, in my case, were preventableand uncommon for someone in their early 20s.

Aside from the physical health problems I had encountered, I was extremely uncomfortable in my own body. My clothes no longer fit, and I was wearing sizes bigger than those I was used to. I was also getting ready to begin my career as a nurse, where I would be constantly on my feet and expected to take care of multiple patients at a time. How could I take great care of others when I wasn't taking care of myself?

I was moving to a new city and starting fresh. I decided that the day I took my nursing boards my journey would begin. I began WW (Wellness Wins, formerly known as Weight Watchers) on June 26, 2018.

I knew that I was going to be in this for the long haul, so a quick cleanse or restrictive diet plan was not going to work for me. I heard of WW from family members and had seen it advertised at work, so I decided to give it a try. What has been the most helpful is adding the foods I eat to a daily tracker. Every food or recipe is assigned a SmartPoint value based on the ingredients and serving size.

With WW, no foods are off limits or considered "bad" foods, regardless of their SmartPoint value. This system has motivated me to measure my foods, rather than mindlessly eating from the bag or dumping a random amount into a recipe.

For the first year of my weight loss journey, I went to a conventional gym and took yoga classes here and there. I took my first Pure Barre class with a friend in June of 2019 and have been going regularly ever since!

I prefer low impact workouts rather than more strenuous activities such as HIIT or running. Pure Barre, combined with regular yoga, has helped improve my muscle tone, endurance, and self confidence.

I want other women to know that my weight loss and overall wellness journey has not been linear. There have been highs and lows, physically and emotionally, throughout this entire process. And there will continue to be!

Living a healthy lifestyle is a choice, and it is one that I make every single day. There is a small chance that I will stay this weight for the rest of my life, and that is okay. I now know that I have the tools to remain healthy and make the best choices for my body.

Finding the path to reach the summit | Columnists – KPCnews.com

My cardiologists first remark when I saw him the end of June for my regular visit was, Who is this man, I do not recognize him? The doctor was responding to the fact that I had lost quite a bit of weight since my last visit. I had not only reached the level he had been suggesting for years, but had exceeded it.

In addition to taking the cardiologists advice to lose weight, I also followed his suggestion how to do it. He suggested cutting out sugars and carbohydrates. I almost eliminated from the diet potatoes, pasta, and breads. I limited my carbohydrate intake to portions that had five grams or less. The carbs I do eat, I like to consume early in the day so that I will burn them off before I go to bed. Over time I discovered it was helpful not to eat anything at night after dinner. Finally, now I have my main meal at noon rather than evening.

There is an old Chinese proverb that says There are many paths up the mountain, but the view is always the same. The Hindu faith puts it this way: There are hundreds of paths up the mountain, all leading in the same direction, so it doesnt matter which path you take. I am convinced that there are many ways to lose weight. I talked with one man who only ate two meals a day, all before four in the afternoon and drank lots of water. Other people I know follow specific diet plans. How one chooses to lose weight can depend on ones personal health issues, personal preferences, and disputation.

The September 2017 issue of National Geographic had a short piece on diets. The article concluded that the key, says registered dietitian nutritionist Jennifer Bruning, is to find what works best for your body, and more important what you can stick to. (National Geographic, Sept. 2017, p. 24) I have talked with several people who successfully began a diet, only to discontinue it after three or four months. Hebrews invites all of us to run with perseverance the race that has been set before us. (Heb. 12:2) To be successful in losing weight it is important to have the perseverance to pursue the path that one has chosen to reach the goal.

Last week I wrote about the importance of friends. Friends are especially important when trying to lose weight. Some programs to lose weight have built into them support groups. One of things that helped me lose weight was that my wife, Diane, and I engaged in the endeavor together. She made significant changes in what we eat. She replaced what had been our normal fare with new and exciting dishes. As the Book of Ecclesiastes says, Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fail, one will lift up the other but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. (Ec. 4:9, 10)

As my cardiologist keeps telling me, the key to a healthy life is dependent on two things: diet and exercise. We in this country have many different paths to accomplish both of these goals. There are all kinds of options to get exercise. The article in National Geographic listed the following possible diets: lacto-ovo-vegetarian, vegan, raw vegan, macrobiotic, fruitarian, juciearian, sproutarian, api-vegan, ovo-vegetarian, pescatarian, Mediterranean, pollo-pescatarian, omnivore and freegan. I am not sure where my low carb/sugar diet fits into the list. However, what is of prime importance is that one chooses a plan and sticks with it. Then as we all follow the path we have chosen, we might reach the summit of a healthy lifestyle.

High Blood Pressure on the Rise: How to Manage Yours – Healthline

New research is reporting that uncontrolled high blood pressure is a growing problem among adults in the United States.

The findings were presented this week at the virtual American Heart Associations Hypertension Scientific Sessions 2020.

The report, which hasnt been peer-reviewed or published yet, paints a bleak picture of the current landscape.

The data collected up until 2014 showed that an increasing number of Americans were managing their blood pressure, but data from 2015 and 2016 showed a drop of more than 6 percent.

Additionally, the percentage of U.S. adults with controlled high blood pressure dropped by 11 percent between 2013 and 2018. The percentage of adults in their 40s and 50s with controlled blood pressure also fell nearly 10 percent between 2009 and 2018.

This study should serve as a wake-up call to all physicians, Dr. Guy L. Mintz, director of cardiovascular health and lipidology at Northwell Healths Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital in New York, told Healthline.

Alarms should be going off because we are doing a substandard job of diagnosing hypertension and are failing at the effective treatment and control of hypertension, he added.

Dr. Brent M. Egan, who is the studys lead author, a professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and the American Medical Associations vice president of cardiovascular disease prevention, told Healthline that its crucial for people to understand that maintaining healthy blood pressure is an ongoing process.

Individuals with high blood pressure need to be aware of their condition, so they can take steps to control it. For many individuals, management includes both a healthy lifestyle and medications, Egan said. Effective self-management includes taking necessary and sufficient medication together with a healthy lifestyle to control blood pressure. [It is] a consistent, long-term, ongoing process and not an episodic event.

Egan points out that blood pressure thats not managed well can increase the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke, due to the way hypertension can affect the blood vessels and heart.

Other somewhat less serious side effects can include headaches, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, and blurred vision.

A wrinkle that can lead to confusion among doctors and patients is the fact that theres more than one way to get a blood pressure reading, said Mintz.

While physicians have taken blood pressure readings using a stethoscope for years, there is a different method.

Its called ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, which takes readings for a 24-hour period, and is considered to be more accurate.

The challenge to make ambulatory blood pressure management the gold standard for diagnosing hypertension involves a focused education against the ingrained stubbornness of the majority of physicians, said Mintz. Many physicians balk at the cost of an ambulatory blood pressure monitor, which ranges from $1,500 to $3,000 depending on the type of monitor. The reluctance to purchase an ambulatory blood pressure monitor is also related to the limited insurance coverage for this procedure. However, recently there has been improved coverage.

Egan said that its important for people to know their blood pressure numbers by getting a reading at least once per year.

They should also be aware of which blood pressure category normal, elevated, stage 1 hypertension, or stage 2 hypertension they fall into.

From there, its important to follow up with a doctor to determine which lifestyle interventions or medications might be needed to manage their blood pressure.

For many patients, training in self-monitored blood pressure, including recording values and relaying those to the healthcare team is beneficial in improving blood pressure control, said Egan.

But it isnt just the individual and their doctor who can help, says Egan. Family members can also be a great support.

Lifestyle changes are better done together, he said. Walk together. Have healthy meals and snacks together. Sometimes, help getting medication and keeping medical appointments require assistance with transportation or costs.

Egan also notes that the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) have launched a national initiative, known as Target:BP, which is trying to help medical providers across the country improve blood pressure control rates.

He said healthcare professionals can also utilize programs proven to improve blood pressure control. That includes the AMAs MAP BP program, which stands for measure accurately, act rapidly, and partner with patients and families.

The AMA and AHA are partnering on Target:BP and the MAP BP program to improve hypertension control rates nationally and to improve equity in blood pressure control and cardiovascular outcomes, Egan noted.

Finally, its critical for everyone to be aware of the serious risks associated with hypertension.

Hypertension remains the silent killer because there are no symptoms and its a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and progressive kidney disease, said Mintz.

5 Health Benefits and Uses Of Full Spectrum CBD Oil – 2020 Guide | PensacolaVoice Magazine 2020 – Pensacola Voice

While the hemp industry is on the rise and the movement of the actual trend goes nowhere but up, the chances for making the most of CBD-based products have never been as actual as they are nowadays. One of the products which especially stands out from the crowd of other health products from this industry is the full-spectrum CBD oil. The benefits provided to both users who use it for prevention and the ones who utilize it in order to treat current health issues are numerous and they also amaze the general public with the efficiency they produce with regular consumption.

Since the terminology about this particular CBD product is not familiar to everyone due to the narrow circle of true connoisseurs, we should specifically highlight the differences between regular CBD oils and the full-spectrum CBD oil. Namely, various CBD remedies are made from not only distinctive segments of the marijuana plant but also, consist of various active ingredients carefully selected and implemented into the final creation. What CBD oil can be made of are cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Besides CBD and THC, there are more than a hundred different cannabinoids out there. The reasons for using these active ingredients of the plant in cannabis-based oils are that they enable their consumers to experience therapeutic benefits when they use them appropriately. Apart from medical features, these two most known active elements have psychoactive properties and are moderately dosed to CBD products in order to meet the law requirements and standards.

There are half more terpenes than there are cannabinoids in the marijuana plant. Apart from providing therapeutical aid to the consumers, they are also the ones in charge of the smell and the aroma of the plant itself.

The smallest group included in CBD oils is the flavonoids group and there are about twenty distinctive constituents to be found in the marijuana plant. What they provide is the remedial effect that has been tested and medically proven by multiple studies worldwide. They are peculiarly beneficial for the treatment of inflammations, they are a valuable asset in fighting against cancer and they also manifest neuroprotective features.

What full-spectrum CBD oil is made from are all of the aforementioned ingredients mixed into a perfectly balanced remedy for various causes. Other oils are made with the omission of certain elements, and, therefore, provide fewer health benefits. Thus, we shall help you get to know what particular benefits a full spectrum CBD oil has to offer and how to use it to make the most of it.

Although it was used in a different form, the marijuana plant was consumed in the far past, as far as three millennia B.C. for the sake of its characteristics. Nowadays, with the implementation of contemporary technology and with the knowledge accumulated over the years, solely benefits of the plant are easily isolated and side effects are brought to a minimum.

Thanks to the endocannabinoid system, you may consume the remedy to lessen the pain. It has a wide range of uses, and among standard usage, it is broadly used by both multiple sclerosis and cancer patients.

Finding the right product should be closely related to your wants and needs, but naturally grown hemp should be the thing of your consideration if the quality is what you want. You can find products like that on various websites, such as hwxcbd.com, since their full-spectrum CBD oil is conjoined with organic coconut oil for optimal performance.

Anxiety and depression are the byproducts of the modern way of life. Unfortunately, they are commonly treated with various antidepressants causing numerous side effects and other medicines that might cause addiction after prolonged use. Not only they can be harmful, but they also fail to deliver the desired results.

The natural way to treat these two burdensome diseases is to use the full-spectrum CBD oil and utilize the features it enables. It helps both body and mind to relax, with additional effects in the long run. Apart from that, it fails to cause unwanted side effects making it a better choice for the consumer.

People who battle cancer often experience difficulties as a side effect of their treatment. These are fatigue, loss of appetite, tiredness, etc. When the oil is used as a form of supplementation for treating the aforementioned troubles, the outcome is quickly visible. Therefore, the appetite returns while the fatigue and tiredness are petered out since the patient can sleep, thus, get some rest.

Apart from being beneficial for your organism on the inside, it can work wonders for your skin. Therefore, apart from hydrating your outer layer, it can help you get rid of the unpleasant acne. You would do this with continuous usage of small amounts of your full-spectrum CBD oil by simply covering the affected area and waiting for the results to be clearly visible within weeks.

Another important property of full-spectrum CBD oil is that it helps you protect your nerves from decay. Namely, it helps you treat your nervous system by providing it with the energy it requires. Bad nerves are the cause of bad sleep, various seizures, mood swings, and other diseases affecting the nervous system. Since the oil is rich with terpenes and flavonoids, it is capable of slowing down the processes that have already rooted and preventing new illnesses affecting the nervous system by strengthening the nervous structure. It is recommended not only for persons with nerve issues but also for healthy individuals who take care of their health before any visible problems emerge and the time for a timely reaction is long gone.

When we talk about full-spectrum CBD oil and the number of its ingredients, quality is actually influenced by quantity. Not only when we think about the active elements, but also when the overall benefits provided are in question. Whether you need this particular product to treat a specific medical condition or you consume the full spectrum for prevention and the sake of a healthy lifestyle, the chances that it will meet your wants and needs are major, since it is the best of what the hemp industry has to offer.

UC SAN DIEGO STUDIES HUMAN GENOME

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine are among the contributors to a package of 10 studies, published July 29 in the journalNature, describing the latest results from the ongoing Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project, a worldwide effort led by the National Institutes of Health to understand how the human genome functions.

This third series of published papers includes descriptions of millions of candidate DNA switches from the human and mouse genomes that appear to regulate when and where genes are turned on, a new registry that assigns a portion of these DNA switches to useful biological categories and new visualization tools to assist in the use of ENCODE's large datasets.

To assess the potential functions of different DNA regions, ENCODE researchers studied biochemical processes that are typically associated with the switches that regulate genes. This biochemical approach is an efficient way to explore the entire genome rapidly and comprehensively.
