Leading expert in DNA Damage Signaling joins IMB as Scientific Director

The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) at Mainz University appoints Professor Helle Ulrich as its third Scientific Director. Professor Ulrich is a world leader in the field of DNA damage tolerance. Her research group undertakes innovative studies into how genomes are maintained in a stable state in the face of a multitude of insults. Our genomes are under constant attack from a wide variety of sources. These attacks come from the environment, such as UV radiation from the sun, or from chemicals in the food we eat and in the air we breathe. Additionally, our bodies also produce molecules that can damage our DNA.

One of the mechanisms required to repair this damage and protect our cells from these threats is particularly active during genome duplication. This repair process needs to be tightly controlled, as incorrect activity can lead to the genome becoming unstable, which can result in diseases such as cancer. Helle Ulrich investigates the involvement of two small proteins, ubiquitin and SUMO, in the regulation of DNA repair. These proteins function by attaching to other proteins and thus changing their properties. Helle Ulrich has previously provided important insights into how such modifications of proteins can govern the efficiency and accuracy of DNA damage processing during genome duplication. In recognition of her research achievements, Helle Ulrich was elected as a member of the prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 2008.

Helle Ulrich joins IMB from the Cancer Research UK London Research Institutes Clare Hall Laboratories and has previously worked at the University of California Berkeley and the Max Planck Institutes for Biochemistry and Terrestrial Microbiology in Munich and Marburg, respectively. She will be taking up her appointment at IMB in January 2013. Professor Dr. Christof Niehrs, IMBs Founding Director, is excited about Helle Ulrich joining IMB: Helle brings outstanding expertise in an area that is central to research at IMB to the institute. Moreover, her work perfectly complements related research initiatives at other institutes in Mainz. This will further increase the international visibility of the region as a hub for research into DNA damage.

In addition to becoming a Director at IMB, Helle Ulrich will also be appointed as Professor within the Faculty of Biology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). We are enthusiastic about Helle Ulrich moving to Mainz. As an internationally leading expert on the DNA damage response, she will make sure Mainz is at the forefront of this rapidly developing and important field of the modern Life Sciences, states Professor Dr. Georg Krausch, President of JGU.

A key feature in the progression of cancer is the transformation of benign solid tumors into malignant states that form metastases. Understanding how cells in a solid tumor acquire the ability to invade and colonize different parts of the body is key to developing new strategies to treat the disease. Dr. Vijay Tiwari will take a multidisciplinary approach involving genomics, molecular, systems, and computational biology to determine how epigenetic processes contribute to this transformation.

In particular, his group will study how signaling pathways acting on the chromatin influence the activity of genes and the transcriptional reprograming that occurs in cells when they obtain the properties required to leave a solid tumor. To do this, Dr. Tiwari's group will develop novel approaches to provide important insights into a crucial stage of cancer progression. The award will therefore further strengthen IMB's research at the interface between epigenetics and systems biology.

A further IMB Group Leader, Dr. Holger Richly, has been elected as Associate Member of the EpiGeneSys Network. Membership of this select group of internationally renowned scientists will support Dr. Richly in his research into molecular epigenetics and their involvement in the mechanisms underlying ageing and DNA repair. As members of the EpiGeneSys Network, the groups of Dr. Vijay Tiwari and Dr. Holger Richly will have full access to the Network's activities, including their training program for students and postdocs.

A*STAR's GIS Collaborates with Pharmaceutical Giant GlaxoSmithKline to Further Research on Lung Cancer

Singapore, Nov 6, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - In a latest boost to A*STAR's collaborations with the industry, Dr Bing LIM, Associate Director of Cancer Stem Cell Biology, and Senior Group Leader at the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), was recently awarded a GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) grant under the Academic Centre of Excellence(1) (ACE) to further his research on lung cancer at the GIS.

This partnership between GIS and GSK, a multinational pharmaceutical, biologics, vaccines and consumer healthcare company which administers the ACE in Singapore, will significantly advance both organizations' joint efforts towards finding a cure for the disease.

The central goal of this grant awarded to GIS, worth SGD$350,000, is the identification of new diagnostic and therapeutic targets for cancer, and the initiation of a commit-to-target (C2T) milestone in GSK discovery. A three-pronged approach will be adopted in order to achieve this.

Leveraging on GIS' successes in identifying and characterizing lung cancer tumour initiating cells, and hence allowing for the identification of new diagnostic and therapeutic targets in lung cancer, the first of the three-pronged approach is to fully validate these targets as candidates for discovery initiation, focusing on those that are amenable to bio-therapeutics.

The second stage of the grant will focus on using high-throughput sequencing technologies to sequence the lung cancer cells and identify unique and novel variant tumors markers, which could be used as diagnostic and therapeutic targets in cancers.

The third stage involves the full characterization of monoclonal antibodies that have been generated by GIS against lung cancer cells that are highly enriched for cancer tumor initiating cells.

Dr Bing LIM said, "This collaboration with GSK provides a great opportunity for both parties to learn what the most effective way is for industry and academic research to join forces in the constantly changing landscape of scientific paradigm, biomedical technology and health care goals."

Executive Director of GIS, Prof NG Huck Hui said, "Prof Bing Lim's lab is doing cutting-edge research in lung cancer initiating cells and the award of this ACE grant is a clear endorsement of the translational value of his research. A plenary talk from SPIE Optics + Photonics 2012. spie.org This presentation discusses an alternative approach to understanding the important charge-generation step that is critical to operation of an organic photovoltaic device. Instead of considering the interface to be a simple interaction between two semiconductors, a molecular model is discussed. The model takes advantage of the many years of studying photo-induced electron transfer in model donor-acceptor systems, where the process of long-lived charge separation and inhibited recombination process are well known and can be described by a Marcus Formulation. A number of polymer:fullerene systems have been studied, each with differing Gibbs energy driving forces and reorganization energies for electron transfer. The talk examines implications of the findings on improving device performance. Garry Rumbles is a Research Fellow at the US DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). He joined NREL in 2000 and is widely recognized for his research in photochemistry and photophysics of conjugated molecular systems, energy conversion in organic light emitting diodes and organic photovoltaic devices, and nanoscale morphology.
