Isagenix Donates Meal Replacement Bars and Nutrition Shakes to Hurricane Sandy Victims in Northeast

CHANDLER, Ariz., Nov. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Isagenix International, LLC today announced plans to immediately donate 50,000 IsaLean Meal Replacement bars and shakes to victims of Hurricane Sandy throughout the northeast United States. The Company is also activating its network of local Associates to encourage additional donations of the Company's nutritious, shelf-stable foods to those in need.

In coordination with several groups, including the Fairfield Health Department/Emergency Community Center (CT), the Company will donate its meal replacement products to storm victims in the hardest-hit areas from Connecticut to Cape May County.

Africa: Sustainable Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security in Africa – Top of the Development Agenda

The third Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security was held in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, on 31 October, with the theme Ensuring access to safe and nutritious foods.

The objective was to create a platform in which food and nutrition security stakeholders can meet, discuss solutions and make recommendations on food security issues affecting Africa.

The meeting at the African Union headquarters was addressed by the AU's Deputy Chairperson, Mr Erastus Mwencha; AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, Rhoda Tumusiime; NEPAD Agency CEO, Dr Mayaki; and Ethiopia's Minister of State for Agriculture (and UN Goodwill Ambassador and world long distance running champion) Haile Gebre Selassie.

EU Ambassador Gary QUINCE, Head of Delegation and Special Representative of the EU to the AU, addressed the participants with a goodwill message "During the Olympic Games in London last August, world leaders came together at the Global Hunger Event to step up efforts to improve nutrition, and in particular reduce the rate of stunting among the world's poorest children, before the next Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. Leaders endorsed a global target to reduce by 70 million the number of children affected by stunting over the next few years. For its part the EU took responsibility for at least 10% of this target, or 7 million children."

AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, Rhoda Tumusiime, who opened the session, said "The Africa Day for food and Nutrition Security remains an important rallying point that provides one of the best platforms for mobilising all sectors to deliver on nutrition sensitive actions. It also mobilises leaders and practitioners to best understand nutrition as a development imperative and therefore to design policies and implement programs in a manner that halts the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition, dead in its tracks. Therefore, we need to shine a spotlight on nutrition, and to target those windows of opportunity such as the first 1 000 days from conception to the first two years of life, as this provides the biggest impact on saving lives and improving lifelong cognitive and physical capacity and enhanced productive capacity in adulthood."

Ambassador Quince further stressed, "It is also essential to build resilience at household and community levels, to help ease dependence on crisis management and boost longer-term resilience and growth. In this connection, the EU has just adopted on 3rd October, a policy paper on building resilience and fostering a more effective EU approach in dealing with food security crises, particularly in fragile situations."

UNICEF statistics indicate, that in Sub-Saharan Africa, 54 million children under five years of age are suffering from chronic malnutrition, and that 20 percent of those in that age group weigh too little for their age.

MonaVie has donated 75,000 of its RVL Nutrition Bars to huger relief organiztion Feeding America for distribution to people affected by Hurricane Sandy.

MonaVie, a Utah-based manufacturer and multilevel marketer of a line of aai juice products and other supplements, settled on the snack bars because they are easy to pack and feature a suite of 24 vitamins and minerals to support the victims of the hurricane and the volunteers helping them in a situation in which they may not be eating complete meals.

Like the rest of America, we were devastated to watch on the news as Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on our family, friends and colleagues on the East Coast, said Dallin A. Under-nutrition high in Bukidnon villages with plantations, conflicts

MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/06 November) Areas in Bukidnon where under-nutrition registered high prevalence rates are either beset by conflicts or hosting plantations, an official said.

In the first half of 2012, the municipalities of Damulog, Pangantucan, Talakag, and Kalilangan topped the prevalence rates of under-nutrition with 14.44 percent, 12.77 percent, 10.77 percent, and 9.26 percent respectively, Estelita Madjos, assistant provincial agriculturist said.

She said those towns were proximate to armed conflicts or some of their villages had actually experienced conflicts.

She said continuous evacuations and lack of parental support due to plantation work have contributed to the high incidence of under-nutrition in the province.

The rest in the top 10 are Kitaotao (9.24 percent), Cabanglasan (9.20 percent), Quezon (9.19 percent), Libona (9.13 percent), San Fernando (8.9 percent), and Dangcagan (8.46 percent).

MindaNews obtained a copy of the report from Madjos, who was recently designated as nutrition officer.

Madjos told MindaNews Monday Bukidnons under nutrition prevalence rate went down from 7.26 percent in 2011 to 6.89 percent in the first semester of 2012.

She said that while Bukidnon is a national hall of famer in the implementation of nutrition programs, some areas in the province have continued to experience a high prevalence rate of under-nutrition.

The top 10 for the first half of this year were the same towns in the 2011 list.

Last year, Talakag, Damulog, Kalilangan, and Dangcagan topped the same list with 13.43 percent, 13.03 percent, 12.14 percent, and 11.15 percent prevalence rates, respectively.
