Women's longevity falling in some parts of U.S., stress may be factor

Its one of the most disturbing trends in American public health: womens life spans are shrinking in many parts of the U.S., and no one knows why.

Womens longevity took an unprecedented nosedive during the past decade, researchers recently discovered, with their life expectancy tumbling or stagnating in one of every five counties in the country.

In Connecticut, where womens life expectancy exceeds the national average, New London County saw a drop in longevity, while Fairfield and Hartford counties saw significant jumps.

The last time life expectancy fell for a large number of American women was in 1918, due to Spanish influenza.

While many scientists believe that smoking and obesity are driving the downward spiral, a growing chorus of experts contends that chronic stress may be a key culprit, too especially the stress of juggling work and family.

Its a hypothesis at this point, but a reasonable and plausible one, said James S. House, a professor at the University of Michigans Institute for Social Research. Women may have gained work opportunities over the last four decades, he said, but society has done relatively little to help them support their increased responsibilities.

Clearly, obesity and smoking are things that contribute to chronic disease and reduced life span, said Carolyn Mazure, director of Womens Health Research at Yale, which funds interdisciplinary research on gender differences in health. There is really no question in my mind that stress plays a role in that algorithm, especially for women.

Watson: Treat's longevity a thing of wonder

Somewhere in the newspaper's catacombs, where old papers, dusty Christmas decorations and unwanted office supplies go to die, you might find a 20-year-old package of Twinkies.

Call it a science experiment or urban legend debunking or simply news wonks trying to be clever.

The more seasoned, more facetious members of the newsroom, whose wit I could never match, decided to test the adage that Twinkies never die by placing a sealed pair on someone's desk.

One desk in particular.

"I was the keeper of the Twinkie, actually," Dyrinda Tyson, who designed our front pages back then, told me on Facebook. "It was a mean-spirited slap at someone originally, but it became an object of curiosity and maybe scientific endeavor mostly curiosity though."

Tyson, to this fresh, impressionable reporter and sometimes copy editor, was the Queen of Clever.

So the Twinkies sat on her desk, and we waited.

Days went by.

The Twinkies seemed to remain fresh. The sponge cake rebounded with each poke.

The delicious cream filling was white and enticing.

Sir Alex Ferguson is in no rush to sort Paul Scholes' Manchester United future and will leave it up to the veteran to decide when to retire.

Paul Scholes: Will not be rushed into retirement

Scholes celebrated his 38th birthday on Friday, in the middle of what Ferguson had previously indicated would be the midfielder's final season at Old Trafford.

However, although he had made only nine appearances this term, Scholes retains an unerring passing ability that is priceless to United's chances of landing some silverware.

And as it seems the former England man is more comfortable with his role as bit-part player, the chances of Scholes carrying on has not been completely dismissed.

"It is not a time to make a judgment on that," said Ferguson. "Paul will know himself. He still has the desire to play. That has not stopped.

"He is still the best passer of the ball in the country. It is amazing.

"He has had one or two injuries over the years, quit last summer and came back.

"He made a fantastic contribution in the second half of the season and I just think he should keep doing what he is doing.

"He will sort the rest out himself."
