BUTUAN CITY - About 989 pupils are set to benefit from a three-month feeding program in Mindanao which kicked off last November 21.
These pupils are from the Davao Oriental Batch 2 four-month feeding program of the Kiwanis International of Golden Tagum, in coordination and participation with the Department of Education (DepEd)-Davao Oriental Division and the Philippine Army's 28th Infantry Battalion.
The Batch 2 schools of said program includes Elementary Schools of Dawan, Danao, Sanghay, Libudon, Cabuaya, Luban and Langca all of Mati City, Davao Oriental; Dugmanon, Lapu-Lapu and Maag all of San Isidro, Davao Oriental; and, Lavigan, Tagabebe, Pundaguitan, Tandang Sora and Anitap all of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental.
President of the Kiwanis International Golden Tagum Jeffrey Mataro, said that addressing the malnutrition as early as preschool will make a huge change in the performance of a child.
"This feeding program is only supplementary to what the parents feed their child, and this will not sustain without your (parents) commitment in providing the right nutrition to your child," he said.
Mataro said the uniqueness of this feeding program lies on the strength of the six pillars, converging together in implementing and monitoring the activity.
First pillar is the school head who see to it that the program is implemented on a regular basis; second is the feeding coordinator who domestically manages the actual daily feeding; third is the PTA organization who is crucial in assisting the school in the feeding and motivating parents to undergo nutritional counseling; forth is the Division and district nurses who will distribute, motivate and collect data report from all participating school; fifth is the Philippine Army who will assist in transporting the food pack, monitor and help establish "Gulayan sa Paaralan" which is a good complimentary program to support the feeding; and lastly, the Kiwanis Club of Golden Tagum who will provide for the food pack, monitor and link the remaining five pillars.
"I thank DepEd for identify the right beneficiaries of our advocacy, and I thank the 28th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army under Lt. Col. Francisco Lorenzo Jr. for bridging us to these (beneficiaries) communities," Mataro added.

Nutrition Program Targets 1,000 Pupils
Alipurduar, Nov. 25: A medical camp conducted by a Siliguri-based voluntary organisation on the closed Dheklapara tea estate today found that nearly 80 per cent of the 326 people examined were suffering from malnutrition.
Health officials said a "good number of people" out of those checked today had eye problems caused by vitamin deficiency and tuberculosis and worms in their stomach.
The garden in Jalpaiguri district has been shut since 2002 and around 15 people died in the garden of suspected malnutrition in the past two months.
"Eight years ago we had visited the garden and distributed food grains among the people. Recently, we came to know about a number of starvation deaths, although the state government is denying it. We had made a thorough survey in the main division of the garden and decided to organise a health camp," said Avijit Majumder, the president of Siliguri Welfare Organisation that conducted the daylong camp today.
"We conducted a survey primarily on the Body Mass Index (BMI) which indicates the nutrition levels," he added.
Debasish Mukherjee, a doctor from Calcutta who was part of the camp, said: "At least 80 per cent of the 326 persons we checked today are suffering from malnutrition. A good number of people are also suffering from eye problems because of vitamin deficiency. Lot of people have tuberculosis and worms have been detected in the stomachs of some of them. We have distributed medicines among the garden people."
Around 253 mosquito nets and 450 blankets were also distributed in the garden.
Four doctors and 25 members of the organisation attended the health camp today.
According to Majumder, 100 girls in the age group of 15 to 25 years were found to be "underweight".
Swapan Samjhar, a garden worker, said: "The pipelines for the supply of drinking water are in a deplorable condition. People collect water either from a deep tube well in the main division or go to Bandapani, nearly 2km away."

Nutrition deficit in shut tea garden
A pilot program at Clinic Ole aims to help Latina mothers provide the proper nutrition for their newborn babies.
The Infant Nutrition for Latina Mothers program will have its first class in early December. The goal is to help educate new mothers about proper nutrition specifically, the different developmental stages of feeding, which includes the recommendation of breastfeeding through the first year, and slowly introducing solid foods at six months. Mothers who choose not to breastfeed will be taught proper bottle-feeding techniques, said Kathy DeMaggio, Clinic Oles director of planning and education.
Babies know when theyre done feeding, but parents who bottle-feed sometimes become over-involved by pushing the baby to have more milk or formula, DeMaggio explained.
The baby will stop sucking on the bottle, but if a parent sees the bottle is still full, theyll sometimes try to get the baby to finish. DeMaggio said some parents will prop up the bottle so milk keeps dripping into the babys mouth.
The result of improper bottle-feeding is that a child can become overweight, she said.
With breastfeeding, you cant overdo it, DeMaggio said.
A baby will nurse when he or she is hungry and stop when feeling full, she said. The mother has less control over how much the baby takes in.
DeMaggio decided to create the curriculum for the new pilot program after hearing a presentation from the Latino Infant Nutrition Initiative, which works to prevent childhood obesity and support healthy growth and development.
According to the organization, inappropriate infant feeding and nutrition practices increase the likelihood for early childhood obesity especially among minority infants and toddlers.
Latino children, in particular, have high rates of being overweight or obese compared to other children.

WASHINGTON (Nov. 26, 2012) Imtiaz A. Khan, M.D., professor of microbiology, immunology, and tropical medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, received a $1.6 million federal grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to study the effects of microsporidiaopportunistic inter-cellular pathogensthat cause morbidity and mortality in HIV patients.
Fifteen years ago, Khan saw that this type of infection was becoming a major problem in HIV populations. He realized little had been researched about immune response to these pathogens. After looking into the matter further, he saw that CD8+ T cells played a critical role in protecting against these pathogens.
His project, titled "CD8+ T cell effectors against microsporidia," will study how to prevent microsporidia from causing complications in immunocompromised subjects by regulating CD8+ T cells. These highly understudied cells are tolerated and controlled in healthy, immunocompetent individuals. For the elderly or individuals with HIV, these cells can cause problems. In order to stave off infection for the immunocompromised, the cells need to be maintained and regenerated.
"The question is, how can you generate CD8 effectively, so this infection does not harm them?" said Khan. "Because CD8+ T cells are critical, how can you maintain a good CD8 cell population, so this group of pathogens doesn't reemerge?"
Khan and his research team will be using cytokines and other therapeutic methods to generate highly functional CD8+ T cells to create and maintain robust immunity against these pathogens, improving the mortality and quality of life of many HIV patients.
This research may not only benefit those suffering from microspordia, but can be extended to other infections effecting HIV populations, as well.
