The acclaimed ecologist, Dr. David Schindler, has likened the eutrophication of freshwater lakes to the Dust Bowl of the nineteen thirties, because both resulted from bad land use practices. As inaugural holder of the David Schindler Professorship in Aquatic Science, Dr. Paul Frost also worries about the quality of our water and how to maintain healthy levels of algae in our lakes. Dr. Frost, an assistant professor in the Department of Biology, is working to improve and enhance water quality in the Kawartha Lakes and other aquatic ecosystems in southern Ontario. Dr. Frost #39;s concern for our fresh waters is shared by his partner and colleague, Dr. Maggie Xenopoulos. A recognized expert in global change biology, Dr. Xenopoulos is dismayed by the impact that human activities are having on the natural environment. "What we are doing to the planet is terrible," says Dr. Xenopoulos, whose research examines how urban and agricultural land use affects the function of water bodies. "We are lucky in Ontario to have an abundance of fresh water, unlike anywhere in the world." As a lead author in the United Nations Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, Dr. Xenopoulos helped developed future scenarios for freshwater biodiversity. The study revealed that approximately 60 per cent of ecosystem services are at risk. For her work she was named a co-recipient of the Zayed International Prize for the Environment. Dr. Charles T. Krebs Energy Kinesiology Charles T. Krebs began his professional career with a PhD in Biology Physiology from Boston University. After teaching marine biology and neuroanatomy for a number of years at St. Mary #39;s College in Maryland, in 1983 he moved to Australia as a Marine Research Scientist at the Marine Sciences Laboratory in Queenscliff, Victoria. Shortly after his move, a near fatal scuba diving accident left him paralyzed from the waist down and opened the door to a new chapter in his life. Through his knowledge of anatomy and physiology and his ability to move Ch #39;i with his mind from years of martial arts training, he learned to walk again. He went on to be Principal Research Scientist, Head of Water Quality Laboratory Environmental Protection Authority of Victoria from 1985 to 1988. During his period of recovery he sought alternative and complementary therapies to help him walk better, including massage, chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy, naturopathy, acupuncture, and even Filipino Faith Healing. Kinesiology, a form of direct muscle biofeedback, helped him the most. Completely fascinated by this technique, he spent the next 5 years learning everything he could about energy medicine. In 1988 he resigned from the EPA to take up this work full time. The Orchestra of Southern Utah welcomed featured artists Gerald Rheault and Erika Dobson at the Bach and Bruckner Concert. The artists performed Bach #39;s Concerto No. 1 in C minor for 2 Pianos. Rheault is the Utah Shakespeare Festival #39;s Greenshow Music Director and Associate Conductor. He plays keyboard in the Les Miserables pit orchestra. He serves as Assistant Conductor for OSU. Rheault also currently holds the position of SUU College of Visual and Performing Arts Staff Music Director, Conductor and Accompanist. Dobson is a student at SUU majoring in biology and minoring in music. She has performed with the National Federation of Music Club for several years and was selected to perform at Utah State Solo Ensemble. In addition to playing the piano, Dobson is also proficient with the flute. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist. His abilities as an organist were highly respected throughout Europe during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognized as a great composer until the early 1800s. We learned of the existence of bacteria over 300 years ago and we have far more of them in our bodies than human cells, but it was less than 40 years ago when we first realized how they swim. With the discovery of the rotary motor of E. coli in 1973, a motor just 45 nanometers in diameter, some claimed this incredible mechanism as evidence of God, though it is really just a step along the path of evolution. Now we can actually build nanorobots that swim similar to bacteria like E. coli. We #39;re working to use these to deliver drugs to specific locations in the body. E. coli itself is a kind of robot: it has sensors (chemoreceptors), motors, communication along protein guided pathways, and software (DNA). When we look at a bacterium from this perspective it seems like a machine, even one that we will be hopefully able to duplicate someday. So if bacteria are really just machines then what are we? Brad Nelson is the Professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at ETH Zürich where his primary research focus is on microrobotics and nanorobotics with an emphasis on applications in biology and medicine. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Minnesota and robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. He has worked at Honeywell and Motorola and served as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana, Africa.
