Ready! Set! Go:ing: Raw! (vegan)
After being vegan for almost a year to date, I #39;m taking an unexpected step into a raw vegan lifestyle. When I say unexpected - I mean it. Its an intuitive force leading me this way, which is supported by what #39;s showing up outside of me... (article I wrote last year about why I went vegan- Viggity Vegan, Message From An Eel) http://www.elephantjournal.com Currently I #39;m learning more about raw nutrition by taking David Wolfe #39;s raw nutrition certification course through the body mind institute online. So far it #39;s really great and interesting! Also, a friend owns the 80/10/10 diet book and is lending that to me this week. I go into this expecting challenge but also fully ready for this. My intention is to be mostly 100% raw vegan for a year. I #39;m going to feel it out. Looking forward to cleansing/detoxing my organs, healing my body and connecting more with mother nature and my intuition. From:Capri KurtzViews:0 1ratingsTime:06:58More inPeople Blogs

Chia, nutrition’s new pet project

It entered the scene three decades ago as a comical tchotchke also known as the Chia Pet but like the best of American makeover stories it has turned itself into something much better a nutritional powerhouse.

Were talking about the chia seed. Teeny to the naked eye, the chia seed contains antioxidants, protein, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids making it one of the most super of superfoods.

Chia is great. Its easy to use and its beneficial for a wide range of people those with food allergies, people who want to lose weight, vegetarians and athletes, says Rebecca Mohning, a Washington area registered dietician and owner of Expert Nutrition.

Its easy to use because unlike flaxseed, which has some of the same properties it doesnt need to be ground to access the key nutrients. Instead, the whole seed (slightly bigger than a poppy seed) can be sprinkled on top of pretty much anything.

And its flavor is hard not to like since its essentially flavorless, says Mohning, who not only recommends the seed to her client groups but also uses it at home with her 4-year-old son, who has egg and other allergies.

I use it in baking as an egg replacer. It has great binding capacity, Mohning says. (One tablespoon of chia powder in a quarter-cup of water equals one egg). It is also gluten-free and has anti-inflammatory properties, she says.

What is chia?

So, where did this super seed come from, and what is in it, exactly?

It originated in Mexico and Guatemala, says Wayne Coates, author of Chia: The Complete Guide to the Ultimate Superfood. It is also grown in Australia and Bolivia, in areas fairly close to the equator. But the United States does not have the right type of climate conditions to grow the super seed at least not yet, he says. Maybe through breeding in the future, but not at the moment, he says.

And the nutritional content?

Bayer Scraps Schiff Nutrition Deal – Analyst Blog

Bayer (BAYRY) recently announced that it will not go ahead with its proposed acquisition of nutritional supplement company Schiff Nutrition International, Inc. (SHF). Bayer had announced in October 2012 that it has inked a deal to buy Schiff Nutrition for $1.2 billion or $34.00 per share in cash. The agreement permitted Schiff Nutrition to review and accept an unsolicited offer within 30 days of inking the deal with Bayer.

Schiff Nutrition subsequently accepted the higher offer of the UK based consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser Group plc (RBGPY). The consumer goods company inked a deal, earlier in the month, to buy Schiff Nutrition for $1.4 billion or $42.00 per share.

Management at Bayer stated that it still believes that had its proposed acquisition of Schiff Nutrition gone through it would have been a significant addition to the German company's Consumer Care business. However, Bayer decided not to compromise on its offer and refused to enter into a bidding war with the UK based company as it was likely to result in an offer price above Bayer's acceptable range.

We note that Bayer has been quite active on the acquisition front lately. In August 2012, the CropScience unit of Bayer acquired AgraQuest, Inc, formerly a global supplier of innovative biological pest management solutions. The acquisition has boosted Bayer's fruits and vegetables business while building a strong technology platform based on "green" products.

Moreover, the decision of the HealthCare unit of Bayer to acquire Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. 's (TEVA) animal health unit in the US is an encouraging move. The inclusion of Teva's US animal health unit will not only add reproductive hormones to Bayer's product portfolio, but also provide multiple anti-infective solutions for treating infections in livestock to Bayer's food animal unit. Following the completion of the deal in 2013, Bayer's companion animal unit will boast of dermatological, pet wellness and nutraceutical offerings.

Our Recommendation

We have an Outperform recommendation on Bayer. The stock carries a Zacks #2 Rank (Buy rating) in the short run.

Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board Meets With Residents of Nain, Labrador

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov 28, 2012) - The Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board visited Nain, Labrador November 20, 2012, where they met with residents of the community to hear their views on the Nutrition North Canada (NNC) program.

"The Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board plays an important role in providing advice on how the NNC program is working in communities across the North," said the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. "Since the launch of Nutrition North Canada in the spring of 2011, Northerners have seen prices on some healthy, perishable foods drop by as much as 37 percent, while there has been an eight percent drop in the cost of the Northern Food Basket."

As part of the NNC program, accountability measures for retailers and suppliers have been put in place to ensure that the NNC subsidy is being passed on to consumers. Board members were able to see first-hand the effect NNC is having on communities in Labrador, when they toured three local stores: Big Land Grocery, the Nain Northern Store and Jacquie''s Convenience Ltd. Board Members also had the opportunity to bring what they heard directly to wholesalers and other provincial and regional governments who are working to provide healthy and perishable foods to Northerners.

The tour also included a visit to Nain''s community freezer and an NNC nutrition education session on making healthy food choices which was supported by the Nunatsiavut Government Department of Health and Social Development.

"It is our job to listen to Northerners and to provide advice on how Nutrition North Canada can continue to improve access to healthy, perishable foods in our communities," said Michele Wood, Labrador member, Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board. "As Northerners ourselves, we know the importance of country food for families and communities across the North, and we are committed to using NNC resources to improve public knowledge of the value of traditional food in the northern diet."

The members of the NNC Advisory Board represent a wide range of northern perspectives and interests. They meet several times a year in person and by teleconference and have held public meetings in Kuujjuaq, Quebec; Norman Wells, NWT and now Nain, Labrador. The next northern public meeting is scheduled for the spring of 2013.

Caitlin Lozano: CSU ROTC Sophomore – Video

Caitlin Lozano: CSU ROTC Sophomore
Part of the 6% of Colorado State University #39;s ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Core) who is female, Caitlin Lozano yields a unique perspective. She is continually proving herself and fighting to be treated like one of the boys. "It #39;s kind of weird because we #39;re supposed to be treated like the guys, but in doing so the guys treat us differently," said Lozano. "But it doesn #39;t really affect me; it just makes me want to work harder so that they #39;ll accept me." Three mornings a week Lozano is up training by 6 am in order to prepare for her PT (physical fitness) test. This includes two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups, and a two-mile run. The standards are different for females and males. Females must complete a minimum of 18 push-ups, 52 sit-ups, and run two miles under 18:54. Males must complete a minimum of 42 push-ups, 52 sit-ups, and run two miles in under 15:54. Lozano believes the standards are fair because it #39;s all proportional, but she can pass the male PT standards. When asked about females in combat Cadet Cade Wolf shows some concern. "The only reason I #39;m kind of concerned about it is if I go down with 60 pounds of gear, with my 170 pound self that #39;s kind of a lot of weight for a female to try to drag off," said Wolf. Lozano, a microbiology major, works around the clock to excel in school as well as ROTC.
