Introduction to Adi Shankaracharya #39;s Shlokas by Shri S. Ganesh devotional album #39;Smarpanam #39;. OM, the resounding sound that permeates the existence marks the beginning of this album, welcoming the listeners to a very unique collection of shlokas that bestow peace, happiness, success and progress. The Holy Scripts of the Sanathana Dharma (Hinduism) suggests human being to seek for Gnana (wisdom) Bhakti (devotion to God) and Vairagya (Stubbornness) from the almighty. But human mind is ever centered on Ayur (longevity) Aarogya (health) and Ishwarya (Wealth) on account of the act of Maya! Such a mind would be ever restless.... Green Roofs, Southern Gardening TV - December 26, 2012
We #39;ve been able to enjoy some really exceptional landscapes with South Gardening. Today we #39;re going to look at a green roof, which is a unique above ground landscape that is actually on a roof. I #39;m visiting the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, where they have 78000 square feet of green roof, which is also called vegetative roof. Growing plants on a roof is very different than at ground level. The planting media is composed of a material called expanded shale, which is light-weight, and that is important. It is very coarse in texture and only about three inches deep. Environmental conditions can be extreme on a roof, both hot and dry, and plant selection is important. Succulent plants have the ability to thrive in these conditions. Sedums are a very popular and diverse group of plants as they have a variety of colors and textures. The sedums have a creeping growth habit and will intertwine. To add a little height yellow stalked bulbine is interspersed. The yellow flowers are held on long stems that move with the breeze. The benefits of green roofs are many and include improved building energy efficiency, increased roof membrane longevity, and controlling runoff in urban areas. An added benefit is improved health and well-being. These roofs give the residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home the opportunity to have green space in their urban setting. Today has been another busy day here (7 am to 11 pm) in Hong Kong, ADIT has hit us with a great visionary for the longevity of the company. There has been much spoken about the value of consumer credits, the value of them and indeed just what the point of them is at all. As you know Adit Network consumer credits will run dry on the 31st December 2012. If you own consumer credits currently, you are already in a VERY strong position. There is a new contextual avertising platform planned which has merchants already knocking on the ADIT Network door to get involved. The crazy thing is, that in order for merchants to get involved in this new platform, they have to buy there way in using consumer credits. And.....who owns the consumer credits? We do!! the members! If you do not already own an add package or indeed any consumer credits, I suggest you get involved NOW. This will be a supply and demand - the consumer credits will be in short supply. When that happens the price goes up - IT HAS TO!! The more consumer credits you have the more money you will earn when these merchants enter the system. Coupled with the amount you buy quadrupling in 4 months, members will be in a very strong position. If you are not in, I suggest ...From:John KennedyViews:2 0ratingsTime:02:48More inHowto Style

Study: Education Extends Longevity—Except for Black Males

SAN DIEGO--The human longevity bonanza that gives newborns today three decades more of life expectancy than they would have had a century ago appears to have no real stopping point. Now researchers are trying to determine how U.S. society should change to accommodate so many longer, healthier lifespans, and why one group of white Americans does not seem to be benefiting from the trend.

Published in the August issue of Health Affairs and reported widely in the media, the researchers study found that while everybody else is living longer, non-Hispanic white women without high school diplomas have actually lost five years of life expectancy and their male counterparts lost three years.

The More Educated Doing Better, Less Educated Doing Worse

The MacArthur Foundation Network on Aging in Society, which produced the report, is now pursuing questions arising from this finding including the stunning impact education has on longevity, for everybody except African American males.

The idea that subgroups of the population dont all experience the same longevity has been known for a long time, said the studys lead author, S. Jay Olshansky, at the Gerontological Society of Americas recent annual meeting in San Diego.

But until the 15 members of the network attempted to map the U.S. society of the future, no one had looked beyond the three basic divisions of education levels: 12 years of school or less, bachelors degree or less, and post-graduate study.

One of the things we did was break down this 12-and-under subgroup into those that had a high school education and those that didnt make it that far, Olshansky said, and thats when we saw something we didnt expect to see.

Overall, life expectancy has increased from about 47 years at birth in 1900 to more than 78, according to federal health statistics.

Aside from the bad news for the least educated whites and African American males, the study identified a remarkable 10-year gap in life expectancy between the least-educated and most-educated Americans, said Olshansky, a public health professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1990, he added, that gap was two years wide.

The more educated are doing better and the least educated are doing worse, he said. This disparity comes just when biologists are on the verge of learning how to slow the human aging process, he added.

Longevity center opens in Fairfax

Princeton Longevity Center Dr. David Fein

According to Internist Dr. David Fein of the newly opened Princeton Longevity Center in Fairfax, the advent of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act more commonly known as Obamacare will impel employers to take an active hand in promoting healthy life choices for their employees, inducing them to stay healthy as a way of keeping overall employer healthcare costs down.

According to Joanne Corte Grossi, regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, who lectured in Reston this month, obesity and smoking alone account for more than $300 billion a year in U.S. health care costs, and are the numbers one and two most preventable causes of death.

Simply reducing one can of soda from the daily intake of an average person can shed 15 pounds in a years time, Fein said.

Healthcare reform will place an emphasis on being more proactive in preventing disease and at the same time, it will create two competing factors, Fein said. Uninsured patients will no longer use emergency rooms as their primary care and instead will begin to flood the offices of primary care physicians, who will see vastly increased numbers of patients, but re-imbursement rates will also be less, so physicians will need to see more patients to remain where they were before financially.

According to Grossi, there are currently 51 million uninsured Americans.

Fein said that as primary care physicians see higher numbers of patients, the average time that most will be able to allocate to each patient could shrink from 10 minutes to three on an average visit.

The result will be that patients will need to take a more active role in their own health care, he said.

Fein created the original Princeton Longevity Center in New Jersey 10 years ago as a way of catering to those who want to do just that.

The newest center opened in Fairfax in September.

Can a genetic variation in the vitamin D receptor protect against osteoporosis?

Public release date: 29-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

New Rochelle, NY, November 29, 2012Osteoporosis, or reduced bone mineral density that can increase the risk of fractures, may affect as many as 30% of women and 12% of men worldwide. One risk factor for osteoporosis is vitamin D deficiency. A modified form of the vitamin D receptor present in some individuals may lower their risk for developing osteoporosis, according to an article in Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available on the Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers website.

To act on cells in the body, vitamin D binds to a specific receptor on the surface of cells. A variation in the gene for the vitamin D receptor (called the Bsm I polymorphism) may change this interaction. In the article, "Vitamin D Receptor BSM I Polymorphism and Osteoporosis Risk: A Meta-Analysis from 26 Studies," authors Fu Jia and colleagues, Kunming Medical University and Yunnan University of Chinese Traditional Medicine, Yunnan, People's Republic of China, report that people with this genetic variation appear to have a significantly decreased risk of developing osteoporosis.

"This meta-analysis provides a pathway to help determine the likelihood that a person may develop osteoporosis and is a good example for the potential application of genetics to clinical medicine," says Kenneth I. Berns, MD, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers, and Director of the University of Florida's Genetics Institute, College of Medicine, Gainesville, FL.

Which group of Asian-American children is at highest risk for obesity?

Public release date: 29-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Vicki Cohn vcohn@liebertpub.com 914-740-2100 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc./Genetic Engineering News

New Rochelle, NY, November 29, 2012Asian-American children have been at low risk for being overweight or obese compared to other racial and ethnic groups in the U.S., but that may be changing. Yet as rates of overweight and obesity rise, the risk appears to vary depending on the Asian country of origin, according to an article in Childhood Obesity, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available free on the Childhood Obesity website at http://www.liebertpub.com/chi.

In the article "Prevalence of Obesity among Young Asian-American Children," weight measurements from Asian-American 4-year-olds showed that 26% were overweight or obese and 13% were obese. The study included the following Asian ethnic categories: Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, and Other Asian/Pacific Islander.

When the children were divided into groups based on the mother's ethnicity, the study authors, Anjali Jain, MD et al. from The Lewin Group (Falls Church, VA), Children's National Medical Center, George Washington University School of Health and Health Sciences, Georgetown University (Washington, DC), and Medical College of Virginia (Richmond), found that while Chinese-American children were at lower risk of overweight or obesity (23.5%) than Whites (36%), Asian-Indian American children had the lowest rates (15.6%) and were the most likely to be underweight. In contrast, Vietnamese-American children had the highest rate of overweight or obesity (34.7%).

"To some extent, this important article highlights variable vulnerability to childhood obesity, based on ethnicity and culture. But what may be most important is the message that groups we long thought of as relatively immune no longer are," says David L. Katz, MD, MPH, Editor-in-Chief of Childhood Obesity and Director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center. "The obesigenic forces that prevail in the developed and developing countries of the world appear to trump genes and ethnicity, and appear to be stronger than traditional cultural practices. We are all in this together, and thus all have common cause that transcends borders and cultural practices to devise the array of defenses we and our children need."
