Ohio State student named 2013 Marshall Scholar

South Yorkshire, England, apparently bares some striking resemblances to Solon, Ohio.

At least according to Alex Chaitoff, who recently became the sixth Marshall Scholar in Ohio States history.

Chaitoff, a fourth-year in microbiology and political science, became one of 34 students to be named a 2013 Marshall Scholar. He is the first Marshall Scholar that OSU has seen since 2007.

Hes very unusual in the sense that he has a lot of initiative and just loves to learn about new things, said Thomas Wickizer, a professor within the OSU College of Public Health who has worked with Chaitoff for the past two years. He really came to appreciate learning about public health sciences. He came to figure out how he could take that new found understanding and combine it with the want to go to medical school. And I think thats how he came to win the Marshall Scholarship.

The Marshall Scholarship was founded in honor of U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall by a 1953 Act of Parliament in order to pay tribute to the Marshall Plan, a World War II-era program where the U.S. provided monetary aid to Europe. The scholarships fund opportunities for American students to do one to three years of graduate study at any institution in the United Kingdom. Between 30 and 40 scholars are chosen each year with the aim of fostering mutual understanding between Great Britain and America through the advancement of any field of study a Marshall Scholar wishes to pursue, according to the scholarship website.

Chaitoff, who was also awarded the competitive national Truman Scholarship in 2012, has done research with Wickizer in the College of Public Health and with Tina Henkinin the Department of Microbiology. He is also involved with Global Health Initiative, the Undergraduate Research Office's Student Advisory Committee and Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. He co-founded and directs research for the Pure Water Access Project, a nonprofit organization that helps people in developing countries access clean water. Chaitoff acknowledges several people for his successful record, including Wickizer and Henkin. But he said without the guidance of Dana Kuchem, an adviser in the Undergraduate Fellowship Office, he never would have been able to successfully maneuver each scholarship application.

Without the Undergraduate Fellowship Office, I would have been completely lost, Chaitoff said. Without them, I guarantee I never would have been awarded any of these fellowships.

Kuchem said working with students like Chaitoff is why the UFO was established.

The fellowship office has only been around for a handful of years, and the whole reason the university created it was because of these types of national competitions, Kuchem said. The university really wants to invest in OSU students, and they know that that means somebody has to help them.

Chaitoff has chosen to pursue a masters degree in public health at the University of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. I chose Sheffield because Im really interested in the social-cultural components of health care, Chaitoff said. Sheffield has an MPH program, and they have people that work with government institutions and have connections to the British health care system, which Im very interested in learning about.

NEWPORT-The Cocke County Legislative Body approved a longevity plan during Tuesday's meeting that will provide $2,500 for 11 employees with more than 25 years of service to the county.

County Finance Director Anne Bryant-Hurst pointed out the creation of a longevity plan for employees from the Highway Department, Landfill and General Fund is designed like the longevity plans already in place for the Sheriff's Office and Cocke County Fire Department.

Bryant-Hurst, however, pointed out that employees who have served more than 25 years would be left out; in some cases, there would have been employees with less years making more money.

"They wouldn't get anything, now or in the future," she said. "If you implement this, they will get $2,500."

Cyndi Lauper on career longevity: 'I just do what I want'

Cyndi Lauper has credited the longevity of her career to not confirming to pop music standards.

The singer rose to fame in the mid-1980s with the success of her singles 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun', eventually selling more than 50 million albums globally.

In an interview with Parade, Lauper was quizzed on why she believes her music has continued to influence singer-songwriters through the decades.

"I don't think it's a secret: I never stopped [recording]," Lauper explained. "When people told me you can't do this or that, I would just do it. I didn't think there was another choice for me."

Lauper also reflected on her unique fashion sense, which has included dying her hair a variety of colours and championing cutting-edge fashions.

Researchers Solve Complex Problem in Membrane Biochemistry Through Study of Amino Acids

Newswise FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. After years of experimentation, researchers at the University of Arkansas have solved a complex, decades-old problem in membrane biochemistry. The consequence of their work will give scientists more information about the function and structure of proteins, the workhorses within the cells of the human body.

Historically, lysine and arginine, both basic amino acids, were considered to have very similar properties and therefore to be essentially interchangeable, said Denise Greathouse, a research associate professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry. Our results demonstrate that despite their similarities, the differences in their behavior in membrane environments provide important clues for understanding membrane protein function.

The findings, which appear in the January issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, address long-standing questions in the study of protein structure and function and help explain how charged amino acids are able to modulate the behavior of proteins in cellular membranes.

Greathouse, former doctoral students Nicholas Gleason and Vitaly Vostrikov, and Roger Koeppe II, Distinguished Professor of chemistry and biochemistry, wrote the article, Buried lysine, but not arginine, titrates and alters transmembrane helix tilt.

Proteins do nearly all the work in the cells of our bodies, ranging from brain function and nerve transmission to metabolic energy production and muscular contraction. Moreover, many diseases are associated with defects in protein function. Future advances in the diagnosis and treatment of human disease will depend upon better understanding of the thousands of proteins that are encoded within the genomes of humans and human pathogens.

The structure and function of membrane proteins both play a crucial role in cell signaling and the regulation of biological function. The authors developed experimental methods that determine how lysine and arginine interact in the lipid bilayer membrane environment. In the last 10 years there have been computational predictions of the behavior of lysine and arginine in the membrane but not methods to test those predictions.

It is the first measurement of its type, its complexity makes it an elegant method, and it opens the door for other people to apply these methods on biologically important problems, Koeppe said. There is a lot of interest in trying to understand whats going on in these membranes, especially with protein molecules that carry particular electric charges. Unless we can understand it at the fundamental level, then we cant extrapolate it to the nervous system. Were trying to develop foundational knowledge that is needed to understand the nervous system.

Were excited about this study because it makes available knowledge that other researchers can use, he said. Those making the computer predictions can refine their methods and make better predictions because they know that they were able to reproduce some of our results.

Lysine and arginine are ionizable, which means they can have a positive electric charge. The research team created a framework for experimentation that uses magnetic resonance imaging to measure whether the groups remain charged or become uncharged as the acidity or the pH of the environment is changed. To make their procedure work, the scientists synthesized peptides, which are chemical compounds consisting of several or more linked amino acids. To enable the magnetic resonance experiments, some of the hydrogen atoms in the peptides were replaced with deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen.

Weve spent about 15 years doing this, Koeppe said. We developed first- and second-generation families of model peptides, and we examine them in model lipid membranes in order to understand the properties of real cell membranes and real cell proteins. This is at a molecular level. We are not even up to the cell yet.
