Mary Fink: Avid volunteer, 104, said secret to longevity was helping others

At a party celebrating her 100th birthday, Mary Fink was asked about the secret to her longevity.

"She said, 'Helping others,' " recalled her son, Free Press attorney Herschel Fink. "I think it was also her remarkable outlook on life. She was a glass half full, not empty, person."

Ms. Fink, 104, of West Bloomfield died Monday at the Lakeland Center nursing facility in Southfield. She had been in remarkable health until a stroke late last week, her son said.

"I often asked people to guess how many pills a day she took. The answer was none, although she did take a baby aspirin every day," Fink said.

One of nine children, Ms. Fink was born in 1909 in a village near Bucharest, Romania. Her tenacity and independence showed at an early age, when her family hid in a cellar as bombs fell during World War I.

"She was probably, at that time, maybe around 9 or 10. ... She (told) about crawling out of the cellar and going to soldiers and asking for food for her family. And they would give her potatoes and things like that she would bring back," Fink said.

Ms. Fink and her family moved to the U.S. when she was 12. She later married a man named Harry Katz, who died while she was pregnant with Herschel. She got married again a few years later to Irving Fink, a widower with two children.

Ms. Fink worked for years as a bookkeeper, first at Hudson's in Detroit and later at a dental supply company in Royal Oak. Ms. Fink was in her 50s when she decided to finish high school so she could receive her diploma. She enjoyed working.

"She even lied about her age so she wouldn't be forced to retire too soon," Fink said. "She worked into her 70s."

In retirement, Ms. Fink spent much of her time helping others. She volunteered in an intensive care unit and then as a chaplain at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

Baldwin High School biology students planning trip to help save sea turtles

The appearance of a desert tortoise moseying about their classroom before returning to the warmth of the sunlamp in its cage might inspire students in Scott Crenshaws advanced-placement biology class to think about a coming trip of their own to a warmer place.

A majority of the students will travel late this spring to help a relative of the tortoise. Students Adam Withers, Cate Gwin, Audrey Osborn, Samantha Weiss, Bailey Smith, Jessie Katzer, Katie Kehl, Jessie Katzer and Heidi Halford will travel with Crenshaw and chaperons to the Gulf Coast from May 29 through June 3 to help with efforts to expand the numbers of endangered sea turtles.

It may sound like a vacation, but Crenshaw insists the students will be preoccupied with educational pursuits during their time at Manasoto Key, Fla., which is about 45 minutes south of Tampa.

The primary purpose of the trip will be to help collect information during the annual nesting of the sea turtles. Crenshaw said the students will arrive at Manasota Key during the loggerhead turtles nesting period and will be tasked with tagging mothers as they make their way to nesting sites and marking the sites of new nests. Females, which reach about 3 feet in length and weigh from 200 to 400 pounds, return to their nesting beaches every two to four years to lay eggs in anywhere from four to seven nests during the season.

We will be working with the Coastal Wildlife Club, Crenshaw said. Very few organizations get permission to tag the turtles, so we are very fortunate to go on this trip.

The students will be on the beach at 5 a.m. looking for new nesting sites to mark and will return later in the day to tag the flippers of adult mothers or epoxy GPS tracking devices to the backs of a select few.

When not involved with the turtle project, the students will walk the beach looking for fossilized shark teeth and visit a marine museum, Crenshaw said.

The idea for the trip stemmed from Crenshaws sharing his turtle tagging experiences with the students.

We asked him, Why cant the class go? senior Heidi Halford said. Mr. Crenshaw went to the Board of Education last fall and got permission for us to go.

Other commitments are preventing some students from going, but those who are making the trip have been busy raising money. The latest effort was a BBQ fundraiser at Fridays Baldwin High School boys basketball game.

Responses to questions on trans-community, the gender spectrum, and the gender binary vs. a medical issue. Question 1. Is the "Trans Community" a community? Of course any group of people who share a characteristic, may lack any other thing in common. However I hear from many Trans folk, a lot about their notion of community and who on the "Gender Spectrum" is part of the community, Answer 1 (AO): My primary communities are comprised of people in recovery from addiction and spiritual practices. I do participate in Ingersoll gender center on occasion, mostly as a show of support and to share my experiences. However, I do not identify as trans-anything. That raises the ire of some. I identify as a woman with a birth defect that is the result of chromosomes and possibly abnormalities during the first trimester of fetal development. That seems the direction of what little medical research has been done and is consistent with my experiences on HRT as well as experiencing myself as a woman. I do know some that identify as transgender, specifically as trans-woman and trans-men. I do not criticize that at all. For them, their trans experiences are central to how they identify in society. In contrast, I identify foremost as a woman in our society, albeit with a birth defect called transgenderism. For me, it has much more to do with hopes for the AMA and medical treatments than diagnosis as a psychological identity by the APA. Question 2. "Gender Spectrum" I have found TSs often ...

Alex Rodriguez, Gio Gonzalez, Nelson Cruz and Melky Cabrera are among the baseball stars treated at a South Florida clinic where, according to a report in Tuesday's Miami New Times, they received performance-enhancing drugs.

Records taken from Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic near the University of Miami, reportedly show those players and many other athletes -- all of whom have connections to South Florida -- received various substances from Anthony Bosch, the head of the clinic, who is already under investigation by MLB and DEA.

Bosch, 49, was previously linked to the banned PEDs implicated in Manny Ramirez's 2009 suspension. Bosch disappeared suddenly last month and the clinic was closed, according to Tim Elfrink, the Miami New Times reporter who spent three months on the story.

Elfrink notes in the New Times report he was given patient records by a former clinic employee, and followed up with extensive interviews with other former employees and clinic customers.

Here's a snippet of Elfrink's findings regarding the Yankees' superstar third baseman:

There, at number seven on the list, is Alex Rodriguez. He paid $3,500, Bosch notes. Below that, he writes, "1.5/1.5 HGH (sports perf.) creams test., glut., MIC, supplement, sports perf. Diet." HGH, of course, is banned in baseball, as are testosterone creams.

That's not the only damning evidence against A-Rod, though. Another document from the files, a loose sheet with a header from the 19th Annual World Congress on Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine, lays out a full regimen under the name Cacique: "Test. cream... troches prior to workout... and GHRP... IGF-1... pink cream."

The mentions of Rodriguez begin in 2009 and continue all the way through last season. Take a page in another notebook, which is labeled "2012" and looks to have been written last spring. Under the heading "A-Rod/Cacique," Bosch writes, "He is paid through April 30th. He will owe May 1 $4,000... I need to see him between April 13-19, deliver troches, pink cream, and... May meds. Has three weeks of Sub-Q (as of April)."
