Access to Safe, Nutritious Food and Water Is Fundamental Human Right: Updated Position of Academy of Nutrition and …

Newswise CHICAGO Consistent access to safe, nutritious and culturally appropriate food and water is a fundamental human right, and is particularly important in helping developing nations to achieve food and nutrition security, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in its newly updated position paper, Nutrition Security in Developing Nations: Sustainable Food, Water and Health.

Achieving food and nutrition security also includes policies, systems, programs and practices that are self-sufficient and environmentally and economically sustainable, according to the Academy.

The Academys position paper has been published in the April Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and can be found on the Academys website. It states: It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that all people should have consistent access to an appropriately nutritious diet of food and water, coupled with a sanitary environment, adequate health services and care that ensure a healthy and active life for all household members. The Academy supports policies, systems, programs and practices that work with developing nations to achieve nutrition security and self-sufficiency while being environmentally and economically sustainable.

Nutrition security includes access to nutritious foods and drinkable water; knowledge, resources and skills for healthy living; prevention, treatment and care for diseases affecting nutrition status; and safety net systems during crisis situations, such as natural disasters or social and political turmoil, according to the Academy.

Throughout the world, approximately 30 percent of children under age 5 are stunted in their growth and 18 percent are underweight. While these percentages are decreasing, they remain unacceptably high in some regions. In addition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies affect about 36 percent of the worlds population.

The Academys position paper focuses on nutrient deficiencies in developing nations and the contributions especially on the part of food and nutrition practitioners that are necessary to create global solutions.

The Academys position paper addresses many factors contributing to nutrition security, including sustainable use of resources; agricultural systems; maternal, infant and child health; gender equality; universal primary education; food and water systems; economic systems; partnerships for development; national food and nutrition policies, laws and programs; and proposed solutions.

Registered dietitian nutritionists, dietetic technicians, registered and other health practitioners play an important role in achieving global nutrition security, domestically and internationally. The Academys position paper outlines ways nutrition professionals can become involved in promoting global nutrition security.

The Academys position paper was written by registered dietitian Stacia M. Nordin, sustainable nutritionist, Malawi; Marie Boyle, professor and chair, foods and nutrition program, College of Saint Elizabeth; and Teresa M. Kemmer, assistant professor, South Dakota State University.

Sports Nutrition for Food-Sensitive Athletes

As triathalon season approaches each year, my patient roster becomes peppered with endurance athletes emerging from the winter hiatus. As they look ahead to triathlons, half-marathons, marathons and other highly-competitive events, questions arise about the beverages, bars and energy shots they should use to fuel these athletic endeavors.

[See Performance Foods: What and When to Eat Before Your Next Workout.]

I've reported previously about a category of poorly-absorbed carbohydrates called FODMAPs, which range from fructose and lactose to sugar alcohols (or polyols) and bean-derived galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS). In susceptible people--and particularly in larger doses--these carbs can trigger symptoms like gas, bloating and diarrhea. As it turns out, sports nutrition products are generally loaded with high-FODMAP ingredients.

As a result, sports nutrition products are terribly difficult to navigate for endurance athletes with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or other food sensitivities. To complicate matters, many of these products are sold as dietary supplements rather than as food; their labels, therefore, may not disclose all the details one needs to decipher what's actually in them and at what levels. What's a sensitive-bellied Ironman to do?

[See Crazy for Exercise: Are We Overdoing It?]

-- Learn the lingo: High-FODMAP ingredients hide behind other terms on ingredient labels, particularly in sports nutrition products. Lactose isn't likely to be listed on a label, but you'll be getting plenty of it in a product with whey, whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate or (powdered) milk at the top of the ingredient list.

Fructose is easily recognizable as a stand-alone ingredient or within high-fructose corn syrup--but lurks undercover in ingredients like invert sugar; inulin/chicory root extract; fruit juice concentrates from apple, orange, pear or grape; agave nectar; and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS). "Low carb" and "reduced sugar" are code words for "sweetened artificially," so be on the lookout for sugar alcohols like xylitol, sorbitol, erythritol or maltitol--these can create bloating and diarrhea. Sucralose, while not technically a FODMAP, can also cause gastrointestinal upset in some, particularly at doses in the 5- to 10-gram range.

-- Take stock of your food sensitivities: If you rely heavily on sports nutrition products but find many don't agree with your stomach, it may be worth getting tested for lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance and/or celiac disease to help pinpoint specific ingredients you may need to avoid.

[See Food Intolerance: Fact and Fiction.]

If you're not fructose intolerant, there's no need to avoid the fructose-containing FODMAPs. If you are fructose intolerant, you'll want to avoid both fructose and sugar alcohols. The more data you have, the easier it will be to zero in on products you're able to tolerate. A qualified registered dietitian can help you assess symptoms as they relate to the foods you eat to narrow down which food intolerances may be worth testing for.

Antimicrobial Test Laboratories Emerges as Leading Provider of Virus Testing Services

Antimicrobial Test Laboratories - a contract microbiology lab founded in 2006 by microbiologist Dr. Benjamin Tanner - has experienced rapid growth of its virus testing services to match its expanding reputation for rapid study turnarounds, reproducible results, and attentive customer service.

Round Rock, TX (PRWEB) April 10, 2013

Virus testing is unique within the laboratory because the presence of viruses before and after treatment with antimicrobials is signaled to ATL scientists by infection and damage to mammalian host cells, rather than growth of bacterial or fungal colonies on agar plates.

ATL has invested considerable resources to build and maintain the sterile cell cultures needed to propagate and detect viruses for antimicrobial efficacy studies, said ATL president and founder Benjamin Tanner, Ph.D. It requires scientific focus and expertise to conduct virological assays in a consistent, reproducible fashion.

ATL's virology/cell culture unit is directed by Dr. Luisa Ikner, a microbiologist with several peer-reviewed scientific publications and years of virology experience. The laboratory's 15,000+ square foot state-of-the-art facility in Round Rock, near Austin, Texas accommodates the growing demand for its virus testing, and enables it to perform fully-compliant Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) antimicrobial testing for EPA and FDA.

It has been rewarding for me to see the companies that rely on Antimicrobial Test Laboratories for bacterial and fungal testing put their products to the test against important viral pathogens such as influenza A virus, rhinovirus, and the EPA-mandated human norovirus surrogate, feline calicivirus, Dr. Ikner added.

ATL benefits from a highly-qualified staff - many of them authors of, or past participants in, peer-reviewed scientific research including:

PSI Announces Experts to Present at 23rd European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases

ZUG, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

PSI CRO, a full-service contract research organization, continues research on differing strains of bacteria in various countries. It is important to know which pathogens and patterns of antibacterial resistance can be found in any particular country when conducting multi-national clinical trials of new antibacterial medicines. City council sends longevity pay to third reading

PARKERSBURG - An ordinance on longevity pay will go to a third reading after city officials approved a heavily amended version Tuesday evening.

City Council was set to approve a second and final reading of an ordinance to suspend employee longevity pay indefinitely. The ordinance included an option for council to bring the ordinance back for consideration at a later time.

Prior to the vote, Councilman John Kelly put forth an amendment repealing longevity pay rather than suspending it. Kelly said he has seen too many ordinances kept "in limbo" by past councils, and said this was a moment to act decisively.

"I really feel when we are going to do away with something we need to just get rid of it rather than suspend it," he said.

Councilwoman Sharon Lynch, who heads the city's finance committee, asked Kelly to add language to his amendment requiring the committee to annually review employee job descriptions and pay.

Lynch said in some years the finance committee did not meet at all, and she feared employee pay could be ignored without the automatic increases provided by longevity pay.

Kelly agreed to the change, calling for a repeal of longevity pay and requiring the finance committee to meet at least once a year to review employee job descriptions and pay.

Mayor Bob Newell asked council to reconsider the changes, saying longevity pay had been suspended due to economic conditions both nationally and locally.

"The intent was never to take it away permanently," he said.

Elements Therapeutic Massage Partners With imassage, Inc. to Address Career Longevity for Massage Therapists

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. and DELRAY BEACH, Fla., April 9, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In an effort to address the issue of career longevity for massage therapists, Elements Therapeutic Massage has partnered with imassage, Inc., a massage education and consulting company in Delray Beach, Fla.

According to the Association of Bodywork and Massage Practitioners (ABMP), each year around 60,000 therapists enter the field while 50,000 existing practitioners leave the profession, with the average career span being around six years. This statistic inspired Eric Stephenson, Director of Education for imassage, to take action.

"Our company was founded in 2007 to address the issue of career longevity for massage therapists," says Stephenson. "Everything we do within imassage supports this mission: the higher purpose behind what we do. Elements shares this purpose and we are working together to provide the highest quality work environment for massage therapists within Elements' 120 franchised studios nationwide by focusing on career longevity and continuing education."

Kyle Gjersee, Executive Vice President of Operations for Elements, explains why the company partners with imassage.

"We've actually been working with imassage for more than four years," says Gjersee. "They have a great reputation within the massage community for their focus on putting therapists first and have been integral in helping design our systems and processes. We're excited to take our relationship with them to this next level."

Elements franchisees employ around 2,500 therapists at their studios nationwide. Their studios are poised to become the employer of choice within the industry by addressing the root causes of high turnover: physical burn-out and business naivety.

In Stephenson's opinion, there are several reasons for attrition among professional massage therapists.

"I see a lack of emphasis on optimal body mechanics and ergonomics within massage schools along with a general business naivete amongst practitioners," he says. "This becomes even more problematic with the lack of a supportive work environment to sustain therapists' health and well-being."

Elements Therapeutic Massage is the only retail massage franchise founded by a licensed massage therapist. The model was started in Aurora, Colo., by LMT Michele Merhib. This humble beginning grounded the company in a dedication to taking care of their most valuable asset: massage therapists.

"Assisting our franchisees in creating a great work environment has been our priority," says Gjersee. "From the design of our studios to the size of the massage rooms to the number of massages a therapist can do in a day."
