Art of microbiology exhibit to open in Gallery90 at HAYC3

Monday August 19, 2013

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Donna Maria de Creeft, the daughter of the world-renowned Hoosick Falls sculptor Jose de Creeft, will be showing a series of new works on paper, entitled, "Microbiology" in Gallery90 at the Hoosick Falls armory beginninning Aug. 23.

According to De Creeft, much of her work has been influenced by ideas and images gleaned from philosophy, anthropology, psychology, literature, mythology and science, especially chaos theory. However, she also attributes inspiration to her love of Hoosick Falls and the many summers she spent vacationing in the area as a child.

De Creefts exhibit will include a series of "Humanist Prayer Flags" and collages, which, she said, are based loosely on Tibetan prayer flags.

"Theyre like books with pages strung on linen thread," she said. "Each one is like a volume of mixed-media collages that incorporate photographs and illustrations of microscopic detail from scientific texts."

The components de Creeft created for the exhibit, which are drawn, painted, burnt and torn, relate visually to the found images.

The flags are "humanist," she says, "because they are about many of the things that make us human--our cells, our powers of observation, our relationship to the natural world, and our ability to rationally and irrationally make sense of our existence."

De Creefts artwork will be displayed in Gallery 90, located in the basement of the Hoosick Falls armory, between Aug. 23 and Sept. 20.

The opening reception, which is free and open to the public, will take place Friday, Aug. 23 from 6-8 p.m..

A concert by blues guitarist and vocalist Billy Gilbert will accompany the reception.

UMS researchers produce biofertiliser from oil palm empty fruit bunches

19th August, 2013

KOTA KINABALU: The Microbiology Research Group at the University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Biotechnology Research Institute has developed a simple and easy way to produce biofertiliser from oil palm fibre empty fruit bunches (EFB) within 40 days.

Its senior researcher Dr Md Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee and his postgraduate student, Nur Shafawati Saili, had conducted the research on converting oil palm industry waste to the biofertiliser.

The application of biofertiliser in nursery and field trials found among others, successful enhancement of plant growth, root development, an increase in plant branches, inflorescences and yield production.

Huge amounts of waste products are creating lots of environmental problems and ecosystem degradation, while affecting the health of communities, with high disposal costs annually, Md Shafiquzzaman told Bernama, here.

He said composting was an alternative way of transforming the bulky biomass into a valuable, manageable product, for use on plantations or as a market product.

In this respect, the production of palm oil is a key agricultural activity in Malaysia, and the country has become a top producer of the product in the world, while drawing large revenue from it.

Malaysia oil palm plantations account for about 41 per cent of the worlds palm oil production and occupy 4.5 million hectares of land. Oil palm fibres (trunks, fronds and empty fruit bunches) are considered major waste products, he added.

He said using the species specific-strain of Trichoderma in composting has widened, not only as a biological control agent but for accelerating rapid composting, the control of plant diseases, a strong competitive effect on space and nutrients, the ability to degrade woody materials, while increasing the production yield, and as biocontrol, biopesticides, bioherbicides, enzyme and toxin producers.

Md Shafiquzzaman said the specific-strain of Trichoderma used as a biofertiliser had many superior properties to that of the powder-based products presently available in the market.

Consultant quits over DOH chief’s stand on stem cell therapy

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE - 10:12 a.m.) A consultant of Secretary Enrique Ona resigned Friday, calling the Health chiefs position that patients undergoing experimental stem cell therapy should pay unacceptable.

Dr. Anthony Leachon, who is in Davao City, said he emailed his resignation letter to Ona.

It is with deep regret that I'm resigning asDepartment of Health consultant for non-communicable diseases effective today (Friday). I have been privileged and honored to be a part of your administration even as a one peso a year consultant. I value our friendship and camaraderie which started years ago, Leachon, vice president of the Philippine College of Physicians and Onas consultant for non-communicable diseases, wrote.

Because his position is directly opposed to Onas, Leachon told the Health secretary, I believe I have lost your trust and confidence and I might not be effective serving the DOH and fighting the PCP and medical societies ' cause in the service of the Filipino patient.

Leachon was Onas consultant for non-communicable diseases since November 2011.

Ang pinaka-hindi ko nagustuhan ay yung sisingilin ang pasyente kahit clinical trial pa lang. Yon ang unacceptable sa akin (What I disagree with most is charging patients even if what they undergo are just clinical trials. That is unacceptable), Leachon said.

His resignation came as the National Health Institute, the research arm for health sciences of the University of the Philippines-Manila, joined the growing opposition to the Health secretarys stand on experimental stem cell therapy.

Leachon, a cardiologist at the Manila Doctors Hospital, called Onas position a complete violation of the Code of Ethics (for doctors) and being the secretary of health, alam niya dapat yon (he should know that). This is not a sign of ignorance, pero siguro may mga taong iba ang sinasabi sa kaniya (but there may be people telling him otherwise).

Book Review: Hypnosis, Hormones, and the Adventures of Anti-aging

Counterclockwise: My Year Of Hypnosis, Hormones, Dark Chocolate, And Other Adventures In The World Of Anti-Aging

By Lauren Kessler

This just in: regular exercise and a healthy diet are good for you. Kesslers book offers these hot tips, and more, presented as confirmed findings throughout her personal mission for a more youthful existence. But before anyone can dismiss the book as the 230-page diary entry of a neurotic boomer, Kessler delivers an engaging romp through the medical and aesthetic temptations facing anyone concerned with how and when they will wizen.

Kessler begins by assuring us, and herself, that we can control about 70 per cent of how we age. Genes, she learns from reading studies, determine only 30 per cent of the outcome (although some gerontologists think we have a self-destruct program pre-set in our DNA). The hope of controlling that 70 per cent is what fuels the $88-billion anti-aging industry, including the controversial American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Kessler attends medical conferences to learn about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, hyaluronic acid, CoQ10 and other trends. She discovers how biomarkers determine the bodys real age. She is introduced to telomeres to protect DNA (possibly) and she gets a muscle biopsy to test her mitochondrion. She also does a 14-day detox, then tries superfoods, including raw diets and calorie restriction. Those last two make her crabby.

Kesslers likability and talent for self-disclosure wont prevent critics from going at her methodology, which is scattershot at best. To be fair, Kessler is the first to admit her random approach to health claims, which eventually starts to undermine her credibility. When reporting the benefits of the hip aai berry, for example, she makes no mention of The New Yorkers famous expos on those health claims. And where are the footnotes? Her favourite studies are often 20 years old. A regular reader of the New York Times health section wont find anything new in this book, but they might find a girlfriend with a sense of humour about our frantic vanities at middle age.
