http://www.SleepMD4U.com - In this session, Dr. Popper discusses some of the treatment options for restless limb syndrome. The primary treatment class of medications for this are known as dopamine agonists. This is a class of medication used primarily for the treatment of Parkinson #39;s Disease. When using these medications for the treatment of Restless Limb Syndrome we use them in a much smaller dose than we would use for Parkinson #39;s Disease and therefore the potential side-effects are much less The most common drugs within this classification are Mirapex or pramipexole and ropinirole or Requip. The most common side-effects that occur when using these medications include headache or nausea, increased sleepiness or fatigue, and some patients feel drugged or have difficulties upon rising the next morning. There #39;s a black box warning that talks about a very uncommon side-effect which is sudden uncontrollable sleep attacks. This is almost never seen in patients with Restless Limb Syndrome and has primarily occurred in patients with Parkinson #39;s Disease who are taking vastly larger doses of this medication than patients with Restless Limb Syndrome would ever take. In addition, there #39;s a small incidence of an increase in compulsive behaviors; compulsive gambling, compulsive shopping, compulsive lying, compulsive sexual activity, any compulsive behavior can occur within this class of medication. From California - A new report published in Neurology finds that people who have had pesticide exposure and also suffer a head injury are at significant increased risk of Parkinson #39;s disease. Researchers studied over 1000 individuals from an agricultural area in California, nearly 400 of whom had Parkinson #39;s disease. Participant #39;s exposure to the pesticide paraquat--a weed killer--was determined using geographic data. Participants also reported if they ever had a head injury where they lost consciousness for 5 minutes or more. Results showed that Parkinson #39;s patients were 2x more likely to have suffered a head injury that caused 5 minutes loss of consciousness. They were also 36% more likely to have exposure to paraquat than those without the disease. Masur conducted the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra for three years ending in 1958 and again from 1967 to 1972. He also worked with the Komische Oper of East Berlin. In 1970, he became Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, serving in that post until 1996. In 1991, Masur succeeded Zubin Mehta as music director of the New York Philharmonic (NYP). During his tenure, there were reports of tension between Masur and the NYP #39;s Executive Director at the time, Deborah Borda, which eventually contributed to his contract not being renewed beyond 2002. In a television interview with Charlie Rose, Masur stated that regarding his leaving the NYP, "it was not my wish". The root of the problem was a fundamental discordance in status between the Americas and Germany regarding employed personalities of standing. In the former case, the hired beneficiary is expected "to report" to the benefactor, in the latter, he expects a free hand to execute his tasks as he feels best on account of his (to be) recognized experience. Masur stepped down as the NYP #39;s Music Director in 2002, and was named its Music Director Emeritus, a new title created for him. The critical consensus is that Masur improved the playing of the orchestra compared to his more pliable and forbearing predecessor. In 2000, Masur became principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), and held this position until 2007. Neurosurgeon W. Jeffrey Elias, MD and his team at the University of Virginia are once again charting new territory for focused ultrasound. As a follow-up to their ground-breaking and successful essential tremor pilot clinical trial, they have launched a new study using focused ultrasound to treat patients with tremor-dominant Parkinson #39;s disease. To be eligible for the study, patients must have symptoms that remain disabling despite optimal doses of medication. So far, the study has treated four patients and is expected to enroll 26 more. The trial is following a randomized double-blinded protocol, and patients do not immediately know if they are receiving an actual focused ultrasound treatment or a sham procedure. The randomization process will ultimately assign 20 patients to the study #39;s treatment arm and 10 to the sham group. Three months after-treatment, assignments will be "un-blinded" and sham arm patients will be eligible to crossover into the treatment group.
