Dino-Lite Expanding Fluorescent Series – Video

Dino-Lite Expanding Fluorescent Series
As Dino-Lite continues to expand its selection of handheld digital microscope cameras, more applications and features are brought to light. Here we introduce some of the new Dino-Lite Fluorescent models. These microscope cameras are revolutionary and highly efficient allowing users to inspect details in normal lighting conditions without the use of a dark room. Allowing research to be more affordable in also worlds smallest fluorescent microscope. As an example of the time saving measure currently, when viewing a zebrafish most of the paraffin section need to stained before observing. However using the Dino-Lite AM4113T-CFVW under it #39;s specially filtered fluorescent light, you will see the fish head structure very clearly. Therefore if using AM4113T-CFVW, the staining process can be ignored. This will save a lot time to prepare a stained paraffin section. Normally the stained process needs at least 7 days to work out. This product will be very useful in anatomy or pathology. For more information please visit http://www.BigC.comFrom:bigcsupportViews:2 0ratingsTime:02:55More inScience Technology

Shortage of plant disease experts threatens tree and crop health, report finds

Plant pathology has been lost completely or greatly reduced at 11 universities and colleges while fewer than half the institutions which teach biology, agriculture or forestry offer courses in plant pathology, according to a recently published report led by University of Bristol academics.

Researchers say that findings from the British Society for Plant Pathology (BSPP)-funded report threaten Britain's ability to combat new diseases of trees and crop as they show a serious decline in teaching and research on plant diseases in British universities and colleges.

Whilst plant pathology still plays a very prominent part of teaching and research at the University of Bristol, the audit finds that British universities have appointed very few plant pathologists in the last 20 years. Many of those who remain are aged over 50. The report, led by Dr Diane Hird at the University's School of Biological Sciences, attributes the loss of expertise to a shift towards subjects which bring more short-term income into higher education institutions.

Professor James Brown, President of the British Society of Plant Pathology, said: "These job losses are severe. Britain is not producing graduates with the expertise needed to identify and control plant diseases in our farms and woodlands. One of the most worrying finding is the decline in practical training in plant pathology.

"Only one in seven universities now provide practical classes which give students hands-on experience of plant disease.

"The appearance of ash dieback in British woodlands should be a wake-up call to the government and industry. New diseases threaten our woodlands and our food crops. Plant pathology education in Britain needs to be revived, to reverse the decline in expertise and to give farmers and foresters better ways of controlling these diseases.

"All areas of plant pathology in Britain are under strain. We are especially worried that there are now very few UK experts left in diseases of trees and vegetables."

The 'Audit of Plant Pathology Training and Education in the UK' is published by BSPP today, http://www.bspp.org.uk/society/bspp_plant_pathology_audit_2012.php.

The report says the position has worsened recently. There has been a long-term decline in plant pathology in many universities but there are now concerns about the long-term viability of the subject in Britain because of the loss of large numbers of plant pathology lecturers.

Professor Gary Foster, from the University's School of Biological Sciences and incoming Vice President of BSPP, added: "Plant pathogens affect us all, from the price of our foods, to the plants we can grow in our gardens and allotments, through to our countryside and landscapes. The battle against pathogens happens on a daily basis and we need well trained scientists and specialists to protect the vital food and crops we need worldwide."

CombiMatrix and Pathology, Inc. Form Partnership to Market and Distribute Prenatal Tests

IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 6, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CombiMatrix Corporation (CBMX), a molecular diagnostics company performing DNA-based testing services for cancer and developmental disorders, today announced that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Pathology, Inc. whereby Pathology, Inc. will market and distribute CombiMatrix chromosomal microarray tests for the Products of Conception (POC) testing market in designated geographic areas. The POC testing market is a subset of the overall prenatal testing market.

The two-year agreement gives Pathology, Inc. the exclusive right to market or distribute the microarray tests on behalf of CombiMatrix in the states of California and Nevada and the St. Louis and Chicago metropolitan areas. Pathology, Inc. is a full-service, independent Women's Health laboratory based in Torrance, California.

POC testing allows OB/GYN physicians and other women's health clinicians to better determine if there is a genetic cause behind a miscarriage or multiple events. As in other areas of prenatal genetic analysis, microarray testing is believed by many to be the coming standard of care as it identifies a greater number of possible genetic abnormalities more accurately than traditional methods.

"This agreement allows us to better serve the POC market, a very important area of specialty for our physician customers and their patients," said Vicki DiFrancesco, President and CEO of Pathology, Inc. "Our commercial team, along with operational and analytical support of CombiMatrix, will result in broadening the use and acceptance of chromosomal microarray testing as a better solution. We believe this partnership will prove to be a beneficial expansion of services and customer access for both of our companies."

CombiMatrix President and CEO R. Judd Jessup noted that the agreement with Pathology, Inc. enables CombiMatrix to broaden its geographic reach and expand its access to the Women's Health market.

"Working closely with Pathology, Inc. allows us to immediately expand our marketing efforts in the prenatal market for POC testing throughout important areas like California and Nevada and densely populated metropolitan areas like St. Louis and Chicago," Jessup said. "Furthermore, this will improve our speed of access to Pathology, Inc.'s established customer base of OB/GYNs. Finally, we believe this agreement offers CombiMatrix and Pathology, Inc. the opportunity to educate the pathologists in their network about the advantages of using the POC test compared to the historic, traditional standard of karyotyping in the prenatal market."

The agreement calls for both companies to participate in sales force training and market development activities and indicates that Pathology, Inc. will generate a minimum amount of tests each quarter in order to maintain the exclusive arrangement.

Province promises change after pathology, radiology review

Alberta's heath minister says changes have been made to make sure medical tests are accurate.

Fred Horne ordered an investigation after mistakes were discovered in pathology and diagnostic imaging tests in Calgary, Edmonton and Drumheller.

"What this looked at is at the system level what are the checks and balances that are in place and are they adequate in order to be able to assure Albertans that we are finding cases of error and that we are appropriately dealing with them, and even more important than that that are we equipped as best we can to prevent errors from occuring," he said.

The province says 325 patients were affected, but no one died and no one was seriously harmed.

"After the third incident I felt it was appropriate and neccessary from the point of view of just reassuring the public, and reassuring me as the person who's accountable for this, that we were doing everything we can to strengthen our system and processes," said Horne.

The province says Alberta Health Services and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta have already begun to implement the action plan recommended by the investigation.

However, the investigation says Alberta needs to make sure the processes are standardized across the province.

It also says the province needs to "strengthen communication between AHS and its zones, the CPSA, Alberta Health and affiliated health agencies that engage physicians" and develop a "single electronic system for managing all physician-related information."

Dr. Trevor Theman of the College of Physicians and Surgeons says they need to make sure specialists are up to date on technology.

"Of course the technology changes, and it changes quickly," he said.
