Stemtech: Stem cell nutrition could eclipse antioxidant supplement market

The emerging field of stem cell nutrition has the potential to eclipse the massive antioxidant supplement business according to the boss of the Californian firm responsible for creating a completely new category in nutritional supplements.

Ray Carter Jr, CEO of Stemtech International, was speaking to NutraIngredients-USA after signing a multi-million dollar deal with Australian biotech firm Marinova to include its proprietary Fucoidan ingredients in Stemtechs new SE2 supplement.

The next generation of Stemtechs best-selling StemEnhance supplement, SE2 also includes a concentrate of blue-green algae Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), the herb Polygonum multiflorum and the fungus Cordyceps sinensis.

Adult stem cells, tissue maintenance and repair

SE2 helps increase the number of adult stem cells or master cells that are released into the bloodstream before migrating into tissues where they reproduce and become new healthy cells, effectively helping the body renew and repair itself, claimed Carter.

Stemtech products have already generated more than $200m in sales since 2005, he added: Stem cell nutrition addresses a brand new way to support health [and]has the potential to eclipse the massive antioxidant supplement business.

When consumers first heard the words stem cell, they were inundated with media reports about the controversy and promise of embryonic stem cell (ESC) research.

Fast forward to today, and they are beginning to learn that adult stem cells actually show much more clinical promise without the ethical and moral controversy surrounding ESCs.

The bodys natural renewal system

Adult stem cellshave been shown to be the bodys natural renewal system, he claimed.

Crowdfunding Nutrition: Using Kickstarter to Make Kids Healthier

Can the popular startup make a dent in nutrition education? One school finds it more difficult than expected.

Kristy McCarron/Kickstarter

Childhood nutrition and anti-obesity campaigns are a hot topic these days. Gardens and cooking classes are in demand in schools around the country.

But how much would you, personally, be willing to shell out of pocket to help our nation's kids eat healthier? In a time of tight purse strings, several schools are asking that question with the help of the popular crowd-funding site, Kickstarter.

"My name is Kristy McCarron, and this is where I spend my day off," a young woman's voice tells us in the intro video of one Kickstarter campaign. She's referring to a classroom at Walker Jones elementary school in Washington, D.C., where she teaches kids about food -- where it comes from, why it's good for them, and how to cook it, too.

McCarron is now trying to raise $25,000 to help build a "food lab" kitchen at the school, which she would run as a full-time teacher.

While many of us may think of Kickstarter as a place where tech-savvy 20-somethings raise money to make the newest iPhone accessory, McCarron says it was a perfect fit for her school, too.

"I kind of just took a big leap of faith and quit my job and started this fundraising pitch," she says, confessing that she hadn't even heard of Kickstarter until a friend turned her onto it for this project.

McCarron has spent the past 8 months volunteering as a part-time nutrition instructor at Walker Jones, which is a historically African American, title-one high poverty school where 100 percent of the students receive free breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She worked nights as a chef at Nora, a well-known, upscale organic restaurant in downtown D.C.

A lot of excitement has surrounded her classes, from kids and parents alike, she says, though she had to get creative with the classes for lack of equipment.

Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board Meets With Residents of Norman Wells, Northwest Territories

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire -06/14/12)- The Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board met with residents of Norman Wells, Northwest Territories, Monday evening to hear their views on the northern food subsidy program. Board members also toured two local stores, Rampart Rentals (also known as Mary's) and the Northern store, which are both registered with Nutrition North Canada (NNC).

Early analysis of data collected from registered NNC retailers to date shows that the program has had a positive impact on nutritious food prices since its launch in April 2011.

"The Harper Government is committed to ensuring that Northerners, and all Canadians, have access to quality, nutritious food," said the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. "The information we received from the discussions with Northern stakeholders during this meeting will greatly benefit our Government in ensuring that this program works well for Northerners."

The goal of the NNC Advisory Board is to provide advice with a northern perspective to the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development on how the NNC program operates in the North. The Board has previously held public meetings in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and Kuujjuaq in Northern Quebec.

"My fellow board members and I are serious about making sure NNC is working in the North, in our communities," said Mr. Wilf Wilcox, newly appointed chair of the NNC Advisory Board. "We heard some very thoughtful and helpful suggestions on topics such as direct or 'personal' orders, food quality and reliability of food supply from the people of Norman Wells. It's our job now to learn more about the topics they've raised and then provide advice on how NNC can be improved for all Northerners."

Mr. Wilcox was appointed as Chair of the NNC Advisory Board in May 2012. He previously served as a regular member of the Board. He is a former deputy mayor and councillor in his home community of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, and is a member of several northern boards.

"As an experienced leader and businessman with strong ties across the North, Mr. Wilcox is a strong voice for Northerners," added Minister Duncan. "I look forward to the input of the Advisory Board and to ongoing guidance from Mr. Wilcox and the other board members as NNC continues to work towards improving access to nutritious food for every Northerner."

The members of the NNC Advisory Board represent a wide range of northern perspectives and interests. They meet several times a year in-person and by teleconference. The next northern public meeting will be scheduled this coming fall.

Video: Facts About Nutrition and Healthy Eating–What Is Good Nutrition?

Im sure youve heard that good nutrition is important to good health. But how? Well, good nutrition helps you in many important ways. For example, eating healthy food helps to prevent diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight.

In order to get the nutrition you need every day to stay healthy, you must develop and maintain healthy eating habits. Unfortunately, many Americans have very unhealthy eating habits.

Proper nutrition depends on a well-balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, fiber, protein, and some unsaturated fat. Carbohydrates give your body the energy it needs to function effectively all day. Carbohydrates are found in fruits, vegetables, bread, cereal, pasta, rice, and milk and milk products. 45 percent to 65 percent of your daily calorie intake should come from carbohydrates. You also need about 14 grams of dietary fiber for every 1,000 calories you eat. Protein is another essential nutrient, and you should get 10 percent to 35 percent of daily calories from proteins.

Most Americans eat more protein than they really need to stay healthy. Protein is found in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, milk and milk products, grains, and some vegetables and fruits.

Some protein-rich foods such as meat are also high in fat and cholesterol. To keep healthy, you should consume less than 10 percent of your daily calorie intake as fat. Most of your fat intake should be unsaturated, as opposed to saturated, fat. Saturated fat is found in foods such as high-fat cheese, high-fat meat, butter, and ice cream.

Nuts, vegetable oil, and fish are good sources of poly- and monounsaturated fats.

Health experts also say you should consume less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol a day. Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in animal-based foods such as meat, eggs, and whole milk.

Sugar is found naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables, and milk and milk products. Some foods include added sugar, and these foods are less nutritious than foods containing only natural sugar. To keep healthy, try to avoid added sugar, which provides no nutritional value and also contributes to tooth decay.

Also, remember that fluids, vitamins, and minerals are part of good nutrition, too. You need about 8 glasses of water or other low-sugar fluids a day

Finally, even though youve got a lot of great choices here in your fridge, Im sure you eat out sometimes. When you do, remember to make healthy choices. Restaurant or takeout food can be high in fat, sugar, and salt, and low in required nutrients. When you eat food prepared outside your home, try to pick lower-fat foods, choose smaller portions, go broiled or baked instead of fried, order a vegetables or salad, and skip dessert.

Nutrition program expands income eligibility

Idahos special supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will implement new income guidelines that raise household income eligibility limits to help offset cost-of-living increases.

The new eligibility guidelines will become effective July 1.

At no cost to qualified families, WIC provides nutritious supplemental foods like milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, juice, beans and peanut butter. WIC services also include health screenings, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding information and support, help from registered dietitians and referrals to other services that may aid a family in need. The average Idahoan enrolled in WIC receives approximately $55 of healthy foods per month. There are currently 44,000 people per month receiving Idaho WIC assistance.

To be eligible for the WIC program, an individual must be a pregnant or breastfeeding woman; a woman who has recently been pregnant; or an infant or child under five years of age. In addition, the individual must live in Idaho, have a special need that can be helped by WIC foods and nutrition counseling, and have a low-to-moderate income.

To be eligible on the basis of income, an applicants gross income (i.e. before taxes are withheld) must be at 185 percent or below of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines. As an example, for a family of three the new guidelines set an upper income limit of $35,317; under the old guidelines a family of three could have earned up to $34,281. If you or a family member are in the categories served by WIC and currently receive Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, or CHIP, you are automatically income-eligible for WIC.

Little Kiwis Pack Big Nutrition

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Kiwifruit have long thought to be a nutritional powerhouse. But a new nutritional analysis published in the peer reviewed journal Nutrition Today further verifies that fact. The author of the paper, Dr. Keith Singletary, Professor Emeritus of Nutrition at the University of Illinois, found that in addition to its antioxidant benefits, kiwifruit can also help the digestive tract and even your skin.

Potential benefits include a rich source of antioxidants, improvement in gastrointestinal laxation, lowering of blood lipids, and alleviation of skin disorders, as stated in the published paper titled, Kiwifruit: Overview of Potential Health Benefits.

The Nutrition Today paper stated that kiwifruit is also a rich source of vitamin C as well as folate, potassium and dietary fiber. The paper cited ongoing, preliminary research that is investigating other possible health benefits associated with kiwi consumption. The fruits content of nutrients and biologically active phytochemicals has stimulated investigations into its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions that might then help prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer and other degenerative disorders.

The California kiwifruit growers, as a member of the International Kiwifruit Organization (IKO), partnered with other kiwifruit growers around the world in conducting the research that further affirms these known potential nutritional benefits of consuming kiwifruit.

California represents 98% of U.S. kiwifruit production or about one-third of all the fresh kiwifruit supplies in the United States during the season. California farmers produce up to eight million trays of the nutritious fruit from September to May with its primary production in October and November. As domestic production from California has increased, kiwifruit has become an increasingly popular fruit for Americans.

The 2012/13 crop is well on its way into the growing season and the mild summer weather California has experienced thus far is sure to promote good size and great flavor.

Cameron Diaz writing nutrition book

People News

Jun 12, 2012, 10:02 GMT

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz is writing her first book.

The 39-year-old star is penning a tome about the importance of nutrition and staying healthy for young girls after gaining inspiration from her friend Gwyneth Paltrow's weekly lifestyle journal Goop!, which sees the US actress provide wellness tips, recipes and fashion advice.

A publishing source said: 'Cameron has become very close to Gwyneth and it's been very interesting for her to see what Gwyneth is doing with Goop!.

'She's been inspired by Gwyneth and the way she uses her fame to influence and help people. Now Cameron wants to do the same.'

The 'What to Expect When You're Expecting' actress started to think more about living healthily following the death of her father 58-year-old father Emilio Diaz from pneumonia in 2008 - but the blonde beauty is keen to ensure the book - which will feature advice from celebrity pals Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth - is not perceived as a diet guide.

The insider explained to E! Online: 'Everything changed for Cameron after her father died. She realised what is important and started to think more and more about her health.

'This book isn't about her. And it's not a diet of any kind. Of course, it's her own journey that has helped her realise what's important, but she wants the book to appeal to everyone, and not just be about her own food choices.'

Stomach Issues? Top Nutrition Expert Recommends A Daily, Yeast-Based Probiotic Supplement to Naturally Promote …

SAN BRUNO, Calif., June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- If your tummy is going through tumultuous times, it may be of benefit to find a friend in the form of a yeast-based probiotic dietary supplement. Daily stress, struggles with a poor diet, stomach upsets from travel and illness can leave your digestive system vulnerable and in need of a friend to restore digestive strength.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120611/CG21351-a)

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120611/CG21351LOGO-b)

"Health minded people know that the benefits of probiotics come from live microorganisms, and most often associate them with probiotic foods like yogurt, yet there is little awareness that probiotic dietary supplements are also available for those looking for efficient options to help with digestive balance," said Kerry Neville, a registered dietitian in Seattle. "A yeast-based probiotic supplement like Florastor can help to promote digestive balance naturally so it makes good health sense to add one to your daily diet," said Neville.

Why Yeast-Based Over A BacterialBased Probiotic Supplement?

Probiotics help the good organisms in your intestines to grow and get rid of the bad organisms that can disrupt normal intestinal function. Probiotic dietary supplements are grouped into two categories: yeast or bacteria, which interact differently within the body. Probiotic supplements containing bacteria are made up of different strains which are good for different tasks, so their effects may vary.

"The gut holds approximately 70-80% of the body's immune cells, so promoting digestive health has a powerful influence on optimizing overall health," added Neville. "I recommend Florastor, a friendly, yeast-based probiotic supplement, because it can withstand the harsh environment of the stomach, while many bacteria-based probiotics are destroyed by acids in the stomach before they even reach the intestines. Florastor, unlike bacterial probiotics supplements, are not compromised by antibiotic use and are more consistent in increasing the production of immunoglobulin A (IgA), the primary antibody which promotes health and helps defend against infection."

Einhorn Damage Control at Herbalife With Nutrition Clubs: Retail

By Duane D. Stanford - 2012-06-11T17:46:47Z

Herbalife Ltd. (HLF) has an image problem on Wall Street.

Ever since Greenlight Capital Inc.s David Einhorn dialed into a May 1 earnings conference call asking for more disclosure, investors have shunned shares of the nutritional and weight-loss supplement maker. The influential hedge-fund managers query hit right at Herbalifes marketing Achilles heel: how to keep track of inventory when much of it is sold from thousands of distributors homes and car trunks. Einhorn had dredged up skepticism that has long plagued direct sellers from Avon Products Inc. (AVP) to Tupperware Brands Corp.

Herbalife executives say they thought theyd put such concerns behind them, especially since their products increasingly are sold in so-called nutrition clubs -- shopfronts where customers can drop by to sample products and exchange weight-loss tips. These operate more like traditional retail stores, which are easier for investors to understand.

There is enough insecurity in the direct-selling model that the stock reacted significantly with the questions Einhorn raised, Chief Financial Officer John DeSimone said in a telephone interview. Its an indication we need to do a better job of educating Wall Street as to how the model works.

On the call, Einhorn asked why Herbalife stopped giving a breakdown of three groups of distributors it had previously provided. He also asked for an explanation of financial incentives given to supervisors who sign up new distributors. DeSimone, who told Einhorn he stopped providing the data because it didnt seem valuable to investors, agreed on the call to resume the disclosures.

Investors werent assuaged. Herbalife plummeted 20 percent the day of the call, on the way to its largest three-day decline since the shares began trading in December 2004. Before Einhorns query, Herbalifes share price had hit an all-time high on April 23, spurred on by a 26 percent sales surge in 2011. The shares, down 36 percent from April 30 through June 8, rose 0.1 percent to $45.10 at 1:41 p.m. in New York.

Einhorn declined to comment.

Herbalife executives will try to reassure investors by demonstrating the benefits of nutrition clubs, DeSimone said.

That should help because you can go into these nutrition clubs and see the sales channel and measure it, said Scott Van Winkle, a Boston-based analyst with Canaccord Genuity Inc.

Study says nutrition makes child tall and more likely to have good career

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

GOOD nutrition in the first three years of a child is crucial to ensuring his health and success in adulthood, according to a study that began in 1980 in Metro Cebu.

Anthropologist Linda Adair of the University of North Carolina, citing the results of the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS), said proper nutrition from infancy to early childhood adoes not only affect the physical growth of a child, but also his performance in school and his career as an adult.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

The CLHNS looked into the pregnancy of 3,327 women in 33 barangays in Metro Cebu between May 1, 1983 and April 30, 1984. The study traced their childbirth and the way they raised their children.

The results of the CLHNS, which was conducted by US and Philippine researchers, were presented during a forum yesterday on childhood and health, organized by the Consortium of Health Orientated Research in Transitioning Societies.

Fr. Dionisio Miranda, University of San Carlos (USC) president, said studies like the CLHNS are good bases for drafting health and nutrition policies. But he said many issues raised in the forum have not been addressed by policy-makers yet.

Format

Dr. Florentino Solon, former Cebu City mayor and Nutrition Center of the Philippines founder, said the results of the study should be presented in a format that policymakers can understand.

He said that in Cebu City, 500 children under the age of five die every year for various reasons.

Labrada Nutrition Teams up with Wal-Mart to Fight Obesity

HOUSTON, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Labrada Nutrition, a Houston-based sports supplement and nutrition company, is about to make an even greater impact on fighting America's obesity epidemic. This month mega retailer Wal-Mart will begin offering select Labrada Nutrition Lean Body to Go! 14 oz. Ready-to-Drink Protein Shakes in several flavors, available nationwide. The full rollout of the Lean Body to Go! products will be completed July 3. The national offering of the shakes means approximately 14 million people* will have access to better nutrition at the Wal-Mart value price, daily. And the real buzz, at least from Labrada's perspective, is the opportunity to work with the world's largest retailer in such a powerful way.

Lee Labrada, CEO of Labrada Nutrition and best-selling author of The Lean Body Promise, says having the opportunity to work with Wal-Mart means potentially touching millions of new people every year. As the former Fitness Czar for the City of Houston, credited with helping the city shed its "fattest city" title, he is hopeful it could mean a positive dent in the most recent sobering statistics regarding the nation's rising obesity epidemic.

"Recently, the American Journal of Preventative Medicine released a study predicting a 42 percent obesity rate by 2030," says Labrada. "As a father, husband, businessman and athlete, this is deeply concerning to me, especially when the study only included adults, and the number is likely to increase when children are included. But I hope with larger distribution channels for great nutritious products, the door will open to more people giving a healthier lifestyle a try and that it will stick."

The secret to changing the obesity patterns in America will hinge on people making better lifestyle choices, and part of it is knowing how to read labels properly, researching what is in foods before consuming them, and overall, being better stewards of our own health.

"It's not always easy to make wise food choices when you're on the go," says Labrada. "So Labrada products are a great alternative when whole foods are not available or when someone is looking to boost their protein intake to help support the muscles, weight loss, and metabolism. I'm certainly in favor of anything that helps people learn how to eat, space out their meals, and utilize responsible portion control."

The nutritional breakdown of the Lean Body to Go! 14 oz. Ready-to-Drink Protein Shakes Wal-Mart will carry is superb: 25 grams of high quality protein, zero grams of sugar, lactose-free, and only 190 calories.

Labrada Nutrition products have won numerous taste and quality awards over the years and continues setting higher standards. Labrada continues to be on the forefront of new product development and remains active in community outreach. Currently all lines of Labrada Nutrition products are distributed nationally and internationally in health food stores, fitness centers and gyms and other fine retail outlets. They can be found on the Web at http://www.labrada.com.
