McDonald’s director of nutrition says its food is healthy

This product image provided by McDonald's shows packaging for the restaurant's new chicken McWrap sandwich wraps. The world's biggest hamburger chain says the new sandwich wrap will come in three varieties: Chicken & Bacon, Sweet Chili Chicken and Chicken & Ranch. The company already offers similar wraps in other parts of the world, including Europe. (AP Photo/McDonald's)

Interview Representative says new menu options are part of the fast-food chains endeavor to achieve variety and balance.

It sounds like the set-up to a joke: The director of nutrition for McDonalds came to town.

Wait. The fast-food giant the same place lambasted in the documentary "Super Size Me" for encouraging poor nutrition has one of those?

It does, and Cindy Goody was in Utah last week to speak at the Utah Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Meeting.

Goody, who is responsible for providing accurate and timely nutrition information to McDonalds customers, also stopped by The Tribune to promote the McWrap. These portable meals contain chicken and greens and are one of the new menu items meant to appeal to the health conscious.

Goody also answered questions about nutrition and fast food. (Questions and answers have been edited for space.)

People dont eat at McDonalds for the nutrition. What do you do?

Were making nutrition more mainstream at McDonalds today. In the past couple of years weve launched fruit and maple oatmeal, [and] blueberry banana nut oatmeal. Premium chicken sandwiches have buns made with 8 grams of whole grains. With the launch of the new Happy Meal [last year, it] automatically includes a smaller-sized kid fries [reducing calories from 230 to 100] and automatic inclusion of apples and we reformulated our 1 percent chocolate milk to now fat-free chocolate milk. All of that came from careful listening to moms in particular and recognizing people are becoming more mindful about what theyre putting in their mouth.

Adding healthy options may make people feel better about eating at McDonalds, but those "healthy" options could still have a lot of sugar, sodium and fat. Can you really make processed foods healthy?

Maternal And Family Health Services WIC Program Celebrates National Nutrition Month

During National Nutrition Month, MFHS is raising awareness about the public health value of the WIC Program, the compelling evidence of its success in ensuring healthy outcomes, and the strong public support for the program. Maternal and Family Health Services administers the WIC Nutrition Program in Northeast Pennsylvania, serving more than 57,000 people each month at WIC Nutrition Centers in 16 counties.

Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) March 21, 2013

During National Nutrition Month, MFHS is raising awareness about the public health value of the WIC Program, the compelling evidence of its success in ensuring healthy outcomes, and the strong public support for the program.

WIC is a preventative public health nutrition program designed to influence lifetime nutrition and health behaviors in a targeted, high-risk population. WIC provides nutrition and breastfeeding education, nutritious foods, and improved health care access to low-income pregnant women and children under age 5 with, or at risk of developing, nutrition-related health problems.

Established to promote good nutrition for children and expectant mothers, WIC has earned the reputation of being one of the most successful, cost-effective, federally-funded nutrition programs in the United States. More than half (53%) of all children born in the United States are served by the WIC Program.

The WIC food package, which was updated in 2009 to include a greater variety of healthy choices, has a positive impact on how children eat. A recent study by Public Health Solutions in New York showed that following the improvements with the food package, children participating in WIC are more likely to have increased consumption of healthy foods, including low / non-fat milk, and infants enrolled in WIC are more likely to be breastfed. In a study completed for the Mid-Atlantic WIC Assessment Project showed that the majority of participants (nearly three-quarters) interviewed report that they have made changes in eating practices and physical activity since being a part of WIC. Improvements include: increased physical activity, increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk, and decreased consumption of soda and fast food.

Participation in WIC improves nutrition, resulting in overall healthier pregnancies, healthier birth outcomes, and better growth and development of young children. WIC helps ensure normal physical growth for infants and children, and has been shown to improve cognitive development, reduce levels of anemia, improve access to regular health care and social services, improve diets and household health behaviors, and improve breastfeeding rates. WIC children arrive at school with a healthy foundation and ready to learn.

The scientifically based WIC food package reinforces the nutrition education provided by WIC nutritionists, and provides supplemental foods with essential nutrients. WIC approved foods include whole grains, low-fat dairy, fresh fruits and vegetables, soy and tofu, eggs, baby food, tuna, salmon, sardines, and mackerel, canned and dry beans, peanut butter, juice, and iron-fortified infant formula.

WIC promotes breastfeeding as the most perfect infant food and provides support for new mothers who choose to breastfeed. The MFHS WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program works to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates for WIC participants. Peer counselors provide new mothers with support and encouragement during the early post-partum period and help moms make the transition back to work or school.

With all the public health benefits of the WIC Nutrition Program, it should not come as a surprise that WIC is highly regarded among American voters. A recent national bipartisan poll conducted by the Mellman Group and American Viewpoint regarding voter attitudes toward the WIC Program showed that showed that Americans - across party lines - strongly support WIC, and not only do voters oppose cuts to WIC, they want the government to invest more money in programs like WIC. When ranked by favorability, WIC is among the most popular government programs including programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and National Defense. Opposition to cutting WIC is strong across party lines: Democrats (80%), Independents (55%), and Republicans (45%). Instead of cuts, a majority of voters want the federal government to invest more money in programs like WIC that provide nutrition and healthcare to pregnant women and children. Opposition to cutting WIC remains strong even after voters hear detailed arguments for and against such spending reductions.

Nutrition Month Theme Extends All Year

For the 40th anniversary of National Nutrition Month in 2013, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (as the ADA is now known) is going back to basics but not back in time.

For todays disparate lifestyles, cultures, food preferences and health concerns, Americans are encouraged to follow the basic principles of healthy eating, but in a way that is meaningful and thus more beneficial for their individual diets and circumstances.

"There's no one-size-fits-all way to eat that's right for everyone," said registered dietitian and Academy spokesperson Jim White. "In reality, if the diet doesn't fit with your lifestyle and unique needs, it won't work in the long-term and can even leave you missing out on the nutrition you need to get you through the day."

When it comes to individual eating plans, peoples favorite foods arent crossed entirely off the list. In fact, it is the official position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that total diet or overall pattern of food eating is the most important focus of healthy eating.

Taken a step further, that means that favorite foods can be a part of that healthy eating pattern when consumed in moderation and in conjunction with some physical activity. "There can be a misperception that eating healthfully means giving up your favorite foods," noted registered dietitian and Academy president Ethan A. Bergman. Our 'Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day' National Nutrition Month theme encourages consumers to include the foods they love as part of a healthful eating plan that is tailored for their lifestyles, traditions, health needs and tastes."

To help consumers develop diets that work for them, the Academy has added helpful tools based on this years theme to its National Nutrition Month website. The site includes healthy eating and shopping tips, games, and various educational resources.

While eating plans are getting personal, some of the Academys tips are applicable to specific occasions or personality types.

For those who spend long days at work, the Academy suggests keeping single-serve packages of crackers, fruit, peanut butter or low-sodium soup at ones desk. For those on the go, tips include keeping portable, nonperishable foods in a backpack or briefcase. Sporting enthusiasts and athletes are encouraged to eat a light breakfast or snack before they exercise, such as low-fat yogurt, graham crackers and peanut butter or a cereal and banana with low-fat milk. College and high school students, meantime, can stick to both a healthy diet and a strict budget with foods that combine protein and carbs, like apples with peanut butter or carrots and hummus. And those preparing meals for their families can keep things simple by building a recipe file of healthy and quick meals and encouraging kids to get involved in meal preparation.

Nutrition 101: ‘Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day’

To keep your body running at its best, its important to eat right which is easier said than done.

During National Nutrition Month in March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages you to follow an eating plan that fits your unique lifestyle and nutritional needs.

Registered dietitian Jacqueline Clemons of the Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center of the Washington Hospital says theres no one-size-fits-all plan to eat thats right for everyone.

Something may work for one individual and not for another. Its based on you needs, your lifestyle and your food accessibility, not just nutrient requirements, said Clemons. Im most concerned with balance.

Whether youre a student, athlete, busy parent, retiree, or work 9 to 5, its important to Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day, the slogan of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

No matter what stage of life youre in, you need to adjust your eating habits as you age in order to maintain a healthy weight and meet your nutrient needs.

Clemons offered the following tips to eat right at different stages of life:

Infancy and early childhood During those first years, a person has the highest requirement for all nutrients per kilogram of body weight than any other developmental age. Thats when a child is growing at the fastest rate, said Clemons. They also require increased protein and require essential fatty acids such as DHA, an Omega 3 fatty acid for brain development and mental function. It can be found in salmon and tuna, nuts and seeds. For picky children, a supplement is available.

Adolescence Clemons said that many children in this age group tend to skip breakfast, an important meal for growing bodies. She suggests preparing healthy grab-and-go foods for breakfast: cheese sticks, yogurt, trail mix, healthy granola bars (theyve come a long way, Clemons said) and fruit.

She also noted that busy teens eat on the go, but encouraged them to make good choices when they are out.

NUTRITION MATTERS: The downside of technology at the table

PREPARING and eating food is one of the most fundamental activities of humanity. Over the centuries, our eating habits have evolved as our physical and social environments changed. These changes have always been gradual happening over a period of years and decades but recent technological advances greatly accelerated this process.

Not only has it changed the way we shop and cook; its also changed who we are and how we think, and has literally opened up a world of culinary options.

Tweets at the table

Meal times have always given people the opportunity to gather and share stories and ideas. With more and more people using technology as their primary method of socialisation, it is no wonder so many of us are giving up around-the-table meals to dine with our computers or phones.

According to a recent US study Clicks and Cravings, The Impact of Social Technology on Food Culture, by the Hartman Group up to a third of social media users are on a social networking website while eating or drinking at home and almost half of us text or socialise on our mobile devices during meal times.

Dont think yourself above or immune to this form of social interaction. Recently, while at a food and wine pairing event with my husband, I realised that I too use social media to interact with others while eating. It turns out that both my husband and I tweeted a picture and a comment after each of the seven courses served.

It seems the traditional family meal and the social interaction that comes with it could well be a thing of the past.

Information intake

Another US study, by the Rochester Institute of Technology in March 2011, is one of the first that set out to examine how new-media technology, like the internet and smartphones, is altering university students eating habits and their association to food. The findings show the respondents are more likely to have meals while sitting at the computer than at the kitchen table, and they use social media as the primary method of obtaining recipe and nutritional information.

The same study found people are more likely to ask friends on Facebook or Twitter for recipes than consult a cookbook, and they often used social media to judge the importance and legitimacy of food and nutritional information.

Food Giants Get Ranked: New Index Grades Nutrition Attitudes

When it comes to global nutrition, things have gotten dangerously lopsided. While obesity rates in the developing world continue to skyrocket, many people around the world are still undernourished. But should we be looking to our biggest multinational food companies to fix the problem? The creators of a new index released last week, and funded in large part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, says yes.

The Access to Nutrition Index (ATNI) uses a complex algorithm to rank the worlds 25 largest processed-food makers according to the approach each takes towards global nutrition. This first of its kind ranking takes on policies, practices, and performance related to obesity and undernutrition. According to the stakeholders behind the index, the worlds largest food and beverage manufacturers must do more to increase access to nutritious products and positively exercise their influence on consumer choice and behavior.

The rankings are based on categories, like how transparently the companies labeled their products, whether they were investing time and money in developing foods they believed to be healthier, and how they market to children. The rankings are not based on the foods the companies actually produce, because the ATNI website explains, There is currently no universally accepted system for determining the nutritional quality of products relative to one another.

In other words, simply because a company defines a product as healthy, doesnt mean it is objectively so. Take PepsiCos Baked Lays, a reconstitution of dehydrated potatoes, modified food starch, sugar, corn oil, salt, soy lecithin, leavening, monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, and dextrose. While they may have fewer calories and less fat that original Lays potato chips, it would be hard for most nutritionists to argue that Baked Lays should be the foundation of a healthy diet.

Irrespective of their actual products, the companies that scored highest barely received passing grades. At the top of the list was Danone (the maker of Dannon yogurt and other dairy products, as well as Evian and Volvic bottled water), which earned a 6.3 on a 10-point scale. Unilever (maker of Best Foods, Ben & Jerry's, Slim Fast, as well as many cleaning and personal care products) and Nestl (maker of brands like Carnation, Dryers, Stoufers, Jenny Craig) came next. The next highest score went to PepsiCo (maker of the iconic soda brand, as well as Frito-Lay chips and Captain Crunch cereal), which earned a 4.4.

"It's a challenge to come up with a score when a company could have many thousands of products. I give [the ATNI team] high marks for courage for undertaking a difficult but very important task," Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University and one of the experts that provided guidance on the development of the index, told USA Today. With time the index will get refined and you'll have a better sense of what might be happening overall."

Inge Kauer, Executive Director of ATNI," calls the index an urgent call to action in the face of a global health catastrophe. But the larger question is whether or not processed food makers, whose main drive is to sell products, can really be expected to play a serious role in improving nutrition.

Nutritionist and blogger Andy Bellatti doesnt think thats a realistic ask, even if it sounds promising.

Board of Education to hear nutrition report at Monday night's meeting

The School Nutrition Association has asked national legislators to revise the new meal patterns and the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.

More than 800 members of the national organization, including Sabrina Jewell, child nutrition director for Henderson County Schools, met with lawmakers in Washington D.C. from March 2-6.

Jewell is slated to talk about the trip during the Henderson County Board of Education meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday.

Our goal was simple, Jewell wrote in a report viewable on the school districts website. We are not asking for money or sweeping reforms.

Instead, the School Nutrition Association addressed four topics about the school nutrition laws that began to take effect last July. The four topics are:

The group asked that the temporary leniency of the weekly limits of grains and proteins become permanent.

The group asked that the breakfast meal pattern be put on hold for one year to allow nutrition departments time to finish addressing lunch. The breakfast meal pattern is scheduled to begin July 1.

The group asked that the paid lunch equity, section 205 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, be amended so that districts that operate efficiently and in the black do not have to raise meal prices to satisfy a national norm, but rather respond to the local economy.

The group asked that a national policy on unpaid meal charges be established.

Other topics set to be discussed at Monday nights board meeting include:

WIC provides client-centered nutrition education that encourages participants to play an active role in their own learning and staff to act as facilitators. This allows clients to eat right in their own way every day, says Gayathri Akella, Washtenaw County WIC Service Coordinator.

WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) is a federally funded program, operated locally. WIC provides supplemental food, nutrition education and counseling and referrals based on health screenings and needs assessments. WIC has demonstrated positive effects on pregnancy outcomes, child growth and development.

A common misperception is that eating healthfully means giving up favorite foods. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 82 percent of U.S. adults cited not wanting to give up foods as a reason for not eating healthier (Total Diet Approach to Healthy Eating, 2011).

The most important focus of healthy eating, however, is the total diet, rather than any one food or meal. All foods can fit within an overall healthful pattern when enjoyed in moderation and combined with physical activity.

There is no particular way to eat that is right for everyone. When eating is customized to suit personal needs and preferences, healthful eating becomes a part of a lifestyle that can be sustained over time. Planning ahead is one of the best ways to satisfy nutritional needs and your appetite on a busy schedule. Continued...

Gaspari Nutrition Announces Change in Executive Leadership

With new goals in sight for company growth and success, Gaspari Nutrition has confirmed a change in executive leadership.

(PRWEB) March 15, 2013

The decision to make leadership changes was not based on any particular event, but was instead made after ongoing growth considerations, said Gaspari Nutrition CFO/COO Dianne Aronica. All of the changes my team has made are designed to encourage even more collaboration among the companys world-class product development, marketing, and sales teams.

Over the past 24 months, the company has undergone a massive reorganization to position itself as a global sports nutrition leader and further its worldwide growth. IFBB Hall of Famer and 2013 Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award winner Rich Gaspari will remain as Chief Executive Officer and will continue his pursuit of leading the widely popular global brand.

The brand, which has enjoyed rapid domestic and global expansion, has recently undergone a highly successful rebranding effort. Led by Rich Gasparis vision for the future and the collective efforts of the product development and marketing departments, the new look and innovation presented to retailers around the world has solidified Gaspari Nutrition as a top player in the global sports nutrition industry. This brand reinvention includes the launch of an array of category leaders such as Myofusion Elite Protein Series, the widely popular Detonate Thermogenic Intensifier, Aminolast BCAA Superfuel, Anavite Sport Multivitamin & Amino Acid Complex, Glycofuse Supercarb, Isofusion Pure Whey Isolate, and the highly anticipated Superdrive Pre-training Superfuel.

Repositioning a global brand with new multi-language and territory specific compliant labeling was no easy task, but through a commitment to our valued partners and our loyal customers, our management team has proven Richs brand is stronger than ever, said Vice President of Brand Strategy and Product Development Daniel Pierce. The process of management changes is never easy, but we let the efficacy and popularity of the brands products and new look speak for itself.
