Tarek El Moussa Just Marked One Year with Heather Rae Young Meet His Gorgeous Partner – AmoMama

TV personality Tarek El Moussa, best known for the HGTV show "Flip or Flop," has been in a relationship with his girlfriend Heather Rae Young for one year!

The first time that most of us heard about Tarek El Moussa was in 2013 when "Flip or Flop" debuted. Several aspects of his life have changed a lot in these seven years, including his partner.

TAREK EL MOUSSA AND CHRISTINA ANSTEAD'S DIVORCE

Back then, Tarek was married to Christina Anstead, the co-host of "Flip or Flop." Unfortunately for the former couple, they parted ways in 2016 after an incident so serious that even got the police involved.

Tarek and Christina had a heated discussion at their home. As a way to blow off some steam, he took a gun and went to a hiking trail nearby. Christina was afraid that he could hurt himself, so she called the police.

After a while, authorities found the TV personality on the mountainside unhurt. He then admitted that he only took the gun with him to protect himself from any wild animals.

Christina and Tarek got divorced in 2018, but luckily for the sake of their two children, they have kept an amicable relationship. They even continue working together on their show.

Growing up in Buena Park, California as far back as I can remember, I wanted to be successful! I constantly saw nice, expensive things that I wanted, but I realized I didnt have the tools and resources I needed to have nice things of my own one day. It felt like every day from that point forward, my obsession with financial success intensified more and more. I wanted to prove to everyone around me that I could amount to something. At one point, it was all I could think about. My definition of success was simple: someone with the money to buy whatever they wanted. But as you start to build wealth, you start to realize that the age old saying money doesnt buy happiness is actually true, as much as I didnt want to believe it. Sure, money can make life easier, it can open up a few doors for you, and it sure can be fun to invest but it isnt the only thing that matters in life. Never stop working hard, and pushing for your goals, but dont get too wrapped up obsessing over a number in your bank account that you forget to measure the other parts of your life that truly make you successful like friendships, health, time with your family, and making memories of incredible experiences! What does success mean to you?

TAREK'S CURRENT GIRLFRIEND, HEATHER RAE YOUNG

Both of them have moved on already. Christina is currently married to English TV presenter Ant Anstead. In September 2019, the couple welcomed their son, Hudson.

Tarek, on the other hand, is currently in a relationship with Heather Rae Young, a former Playboy Playmate and TV personality best known for the Netflix series "Selling Sunset."

The first rumors about a possible romance between Heather and Tarek were spread all over the internet in July 2019 when they were spotted on a yacht kissing each other.

In August that year, he made their relationship Instagram official, emphasizing that he spent three years on his own before finally finding his "beautiful, sweet, and talented" girlfriend.

From that point on, things moved fairly quickly. Within a month, Heather Rae Young and Tarek El Moussa gave their first joint interview, met each other's fathers, and he bought her a Ferrari.

Tarek's children have also met Heather already, and the couple has shared some photos of their meetings on their respective Instagram accounts.

HEATHER RAE YOUNG'S CAREER BEFORE "SELLING SUNSET"

In May 2020, Heather shared some details about how her participation in Playboy impacted her life, and she revealed that there is nothing to regret about posing nude.

After describing it as an "amazing experience," Heather pointed out that if she hadn't posed for Playboy, she wouldn't have met the people who helped her be where she is nowadays.

One of the many things that she learned from her time working for Playboy was how to be good in front of crowds and, of course, how to be in front of the cameras.

If being a beautiful model and actress (she has worked in films like "Christmas in Compton" and "Malibu Horror Story") wasn't hard enough, Heather is also a famous real estate agent currently associated with the Oppenheim Group.

According to her bio on the group's website, Heather is a Southern California native who specializes in high profile clients and is passionate about animal rights and keeping a healthy lifestyle.

Speaking of Heather Rae Young and Tarek El Moussa's romance, they recently celebrated their first anniversary together, and the model took to Instagram to share a touching tribute to her boyfriend.

Doctor’s top six tips on how to lead a healthy lifestyle | ITV News – ITV News

From banning unhealthy snacks being positioned at shop checkouts to the ending of Buy One Get One Free offers on junk food, the government has unveiled a raft of measures in a bid to tackle Britain's bulging waistlines.

Currently in the UK two-thirds of adults and one-third of children are overweight which can lead to a variety of health complications.

While the government's pledge to ban junk food adverts on television before 9pm is unlikely to get Brits shedding the pounds immediately, what simple changes can we make to help us maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle?

Dr Kishan Gandhi, a GP trainee in Gloucestershire who has an interest in childhood obesity, shared his top tips with ITV News.

Start your day with a good breakfast

"Start your day with a good breakfast," advises Dr Gandhi.

Skipping breakfast is unlikely to help you lose weight, instead, being hungry in the morning can lead to snacking and these might not be healthy choices.

A breakfast high in fibre and and low in fat, sugar and salt is a great way to stop you feeling hungry during the morning and give you the nutrients you need.

A breakfast such as porridge with semi-skimmed milk and fruit is a quick and easy example.

Eat the rainbow

A balanced diet is important for maintaining good health, as outlined in the NHS's Eatwell Guide.

Starchy carbohydrates - such as potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and cereals - should make up just over one-third of the food you eat.

The NHS advises choosing higher fibre or wholegrain varieties, such as wholewheat pasta, brown rice or potatoes with their skins on, which help you to feel fuller for longer.

Dr Gandhi explains this can stop you from snacking on unhealthy foods.

Another third of your diet should be fruit and vegetables and you should aim to eat at least five portions each day. These can be fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or juiced.

The remainder of your diet should be made up of dairy products (if you are not vegan), pulses, meat and fish.

Foods which are high in sugar and fat should be kept to a minimum.

Try to avoid eating too much salt or sugar

Adults in the UK should not eat more than 6g of salt per day.

A diet high in salt can cause high blood pressure.

A suggestion would be to cut down on how much salt you add to your cooking and try to avoid ready meals which can be high in salt.

Dr Gandhi advises cooking from fresh where you can.

Eating and drinking too much sugar can lead to weight gain and tooth decay.

Dr Gandhi suggests trying to avoid sugary drinks - maybe opt for a low or no sugar version - don't add sugar to breakfast cereals and cook from scratch as ready meals often contain added sugar.

Food labels can help. Use them to check how much sugar foods contain.

Drink plenty of water

Drinking six to eight glasses of water each day will stop you from becoming dehydrated.

This is in addition to the fluid you get from the food you eat.

Take part in group or organised exercise

Exercise is incredibly important for both physical and mental health.

Before coronavirus, Dr Gandhi suggested events such as parkrun to his patients in a bid to get them exercising more for both individuals and families.

The weekly event at 9am on Saturdays is a free 5km run which takes place in parks and open spaces across the country.

However, with mass participation events not taking place at the moment due to coronavirus, he suggests downloading an app such as the NHS's Couch to 5k which provides users with a training plan to get them capable of running the distance in under 10 weeks.

"Being part of a structured programme helps to keep you motivated," he explains.

Educate children about food

Dr Gandhi suggests parents try and learn easy and healthy recipes with their children so that both generations have a better knowledge of what they could be eating.

Try and enjoy these cooking sessions and this will help children to want to take an interest in what they eat.

Anyone with concerns about their health should make an appointment with their GP who will be able to offer tailored advice.

Bill Sniffin: Code Of The West Author Shows How To Age Gracefully, On PBS – Cowboy State Daily

***For All Things Wyoming, Sign-Up For Our Daily Newsletter***

By Bill Sniffin, publisher

Jim Owen is one of the best-known, least-known people in Wyoming.

The author of both Cowboy Ethics and The Code of the West, Owen had a huge influence on the state in the last decade by helping Wyoming adopt these codes, which seem to make more sense here in the Cowboy State than anywhere else in America.

I talked with Jim Saturday about his latest project, which has a lot of interest to me.

His three-stage career as a successful investor, then a proponent of Cowboy Ethics, has now turned to aging well. He has produced a documentary with Jim Havey called The Art of Aging Well which follows his journey as he tried to re-invent his physical self at the age of 70.

Now, ten years later, he says he is in the best shape of his life and he wants to share his journey. The program will be on Wyoming PBS Friday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. and at noon on Sept. 6.

Owen traveled the world giving talks about Cowboy Ethics to places like West Point, the FBI Academy, Navy Seals, and onward. He was flying around giving 35 speeches a year and found himself in the worst physical condition of his life. He weighed 205, his knees creaked, and his lower back was killing him. Through a number of changes in his life, which he is anxious to share, he now weighs 150 and feels no pain. Earlier he wrote a book called Just Move! published by National Geographic.

I am looking forward to seeing his documentary but his history with Wyoming really piqued my interest.

It all started with the ubiquitous late Mick McMurry of Casper. McMurry wanted to start his Jonah Banks and had seen a copy of Owens book Cowboy Ethics. McMurry thought his bank needed an ethic guide and with his bank president Mark Zabach, they met with Owen about incorporating it into the banks system of operation.

The late McMurry, who died in 2015, was probably Wyomings biggest booster, with his wife Susie, during this last decade and pretty soon, the idea of Cowboy Ethics was speeding all across the state. Ultimately, it was even adopted by the Wyoming Legislature as a code of conduct. Wyoming is the only state in America that has such a code.

During his visits to Wyoming, he recalled one dinner with former U. S. Sen. Al Simpson in Cody. I never met a man more interesting, he said.

Owen, who now lives in San Diego, has a special affinity with Wyoming that goes back a long way. In the early 1980s, Jim and his wife of 52 years adopted two children. Their son was born in Sheridan and his wife had to be a Wyoming resident in order to complete the adoption, so she lived in a ranch outside of Sheridan for six months.

From that date years ago, they came full circle ten years ago when Mick McMurry made that fateful phone call.

Wyoming is a great place, he says. Cowboy Ethics really matter here. They just do not anymore in Texas, Colorado, or Montana. He paused. But, Wyoming, is the real home of the cowboy. And it is the home of the mythology of the West.

He recalled being on a panel at the University of Wyoming and being nervous that he might be stumped by the professors on the panel with him. But when he started talking about the mythology of the West and how all great systems in mythology have to have heroes well, in Wyoming, the cowboy is the hero. When I was growing up, cowboys were always my heroes, he says. We need heroes in our lives today more than ever.

Heroes always live by a code of honor, loyalty, honesty, bravery . . . think of the Knights of the Round Table or the Samurai, for example. In every culture, there are noble heroes. They all have ethics they follow, he says, and it is the same for Cowboys.

But now he has moved on from cowboys.

I am trying to inspire. I guess I am in the inspiration business. I want people to reach for the best in themselves, he said. to do that it means taking care of yourself and taking on a healthy lifestyle.

He doesnt like the word exercise but believes the first step is to just move. My wife and I call our workouts training, which seems to fit us better. We like to do our exercises together.

So like Jim, it appears the best thing we can do is just move!

Food and nutrition disparities are long-standing problems across the U.S. and have worsened during the COVID-19 public health crisis, exacerbating inequalities that factor into systemic health gaps. According to new researchby economists at Northwestern University based on Census Bureau data, nearly four in 10 Black and Hispanic households with children are struggling to feed their families during the coronavirus pandemic.

L-Nutra and FEAST aim to work together to bridge nutrition gaps and support those who are in need, specifically those that depend on food banks and live in food deserts. L-Nutra will supportFEAST's 16-week wellness programs this year in LA that incorporate food education, including nutrition information, recipes and cooking demonstrations, access to fresh whole foods through a weekly grocery scholarship, and support through peer-to-peer sharing circles designed to uncover the underlying causes of current eating habits and create steps forwardtoward better behaviours and healthier lives. As part of this joint effort, L-Nutra will immediately provide direct program support to FEAST's virtual Week of Wellness and annual Fall Fundraising event. FEAST's wellness programs, offered in English and Spanish, have moved to virtual platforms during the pandemic and provide weekly food boxes delivered directly to participants. "At FEAST, we have made strategic adjustments to ensure the safety of those we serve while maintaining our resolve and commitment to get them the education, resources, and food they and their families need," said Dana Rizer, FEAST executive director. "We are thrilled to have this joint effort with L-Nutra. The nutrition expertise L-Nutra brings, along with their commitment to healthy lifestyle solutions to increase longevity, is a perfect match to help us advance health and wellness in under resourced communities through the power of healthy foods and human connection."

L-Nutra also announced a separate initiative to donate Fast Bar products to hospital staff working throughout underserved L.A. communities, which have been hit hard by COVID-19. This is follow-up to a Fast Bar product donation the company made to several hospitals in L.A., San Diego, Sacramento, New Jersey and New York in April. Fast Bar is a premium nutrition bar that provides nourishment and energy.

"Medical professionals throughout L.A. are working extended hours to treat COVID-19 patients and to save lives. They are our heroes. We hope this donation will help them get through long, demanding days," said Dr. Antoun.

And although the flu shot won't protect you from COVID-19, it's important to continue taking every precaution to protect yourself from coronavirus because it appears to indirectly bring on broken heart syndrome, which causes symptoms similar to a heart attack. And for more ways your doing damage to your health, check out The 20 Worst Habits That Are Destroying Your Heart.

Visiting the doctor's office for an annual physical is an important way for your physician to pinpoint unexpected signs of heart disease that you may not notice yourselfand risk factors that increase your likelihood of a heart attack. "A lot of issues with cardiovascular disease can be preventable if you know what your risks are and treat them," says Weinberg. "You may be able to circumvent ever having a heart attack by, say, treating your blood pressure or cholesterol accordingly."

Not only do you sit around for hours when you binge watch a favorite show, but you might also consume any number of unhealthy drinks and snacks that are detrimental to your heart health. "Binge watching TV shows is certainly common and can be enjoyable during the pandemic," says Jennifer Haythe, MD, associate professor of medicine at the Center for Advanced Cardiac Care at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York. "However, a sedentary lifestyle and sitting for prolonged periods has been linked to cardiovascular disease."

Binge watching for more than four hours per day was linked to a higher risk of heart disease and premature death compared to watching less than two hours of television daily, per a 2019 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. And to learn the ways you can tell if something is wrong with your health, check out 40 Subtle Signs Your Body Is Telling You Something's Seriously Wrong.

To prevent cavities and gum disease, the American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and floss every day. "Gum and dental health is important for many reasons, your heart included," says Haythe. "Studies have found that people with periodontal [gum] disease have two to three times the risk of heart attack, stroke or other serious cardiovascular events."

Although more research is needed to determine the exact link between oral health and heart disease, periodontal disease raises inflammation in the body, which can be a key contributor to several health problems such as atherosclerosis (the build-up of plaque in blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack), says Harvard Medical School. And for oral hygiene habits you should cut out ASAP, check out 25 Things You're Doing That Would Horrify Your Dentist.

Although it's difficult not to feel stressed during the pandemic, managing those feelings can help protect your heart. "Stress is a definite trigger for acute heart attack and is a risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease over time," says Haythe. "Stress causes your body to secrete adrenaline, which raises blood pressure and heart rate."

Numerous studies have reported that meditation might have potential benefits on cardiovascular risk, per a September 2017 scientific statement published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. "Meditation instruction and practice is widely accessible and inexpensive and may thus be a potential attractive cost-effective adjunct to more traditional medical therapies," note the authors. For more on finding your zen, The 50 Easiest Ways to Beat Stress in 2020.

If you're battling depression, speak to your doctor about the best treatment options. Not only will it help you feel better overall, but there appears to be a connection between depression and poorer heart health. "It seems to be related to chemicals in the system that exacerbate the aggressiveness of plaque deposition or make the likelihood of plaque rupture a little more significant in these patients," says Weinberg.

Patients were twice as likely to die if they developed depression after being diagnosed with heart disease, per a 2017 study published in the European Heart Journal. Meanwhile, early treatment for depression before the onset of symptomatic heart disease cut the risk of heart attacks and strokes almost in half among older patients in a 2014 study published in Psychosomatic Medicine.

You won't just avoid a sour mood: By catching the right amount of z's, you also actually help ward off heart issues. "Adults who sleep less than 7 hours a night have an increased risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke," says Haythe.

This can be due to a variety of factorsfor instance, when you sleep, your blood pressure drops. By getting too little sleep, your blood pressure stays elevated for a longer amount of time, the CDC says. Getting enough sleep may also help with blood sugar control and weight management. And for more on some of the things that may be standing in your way of getting proper rest, check out The 7 Biggest Things Keeping You Awake at Night, Study Shows.

Experts are learning more about snoring and its connection to sleep apnea, which could have an affect on your heart attack risk. One in five adults has mild sleep apnea, a condition in which your breathing pauses during sleep, per the American Heart Association. "The more we learn about increased pressures in your chest while you're sleeping, the more we learn about all the destruction that's actually occurring to your vascular system," says Weinberg.

A common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when throat muscles relax. And according to the Mayo Clinic, it may increase your risk of recurrent heart attack, stroke, and atrial fibrillation.

Although meal plans that put fat in the spotlight like the ketogenic diet are trendy, if you eat too much of the wrong types of fat, it can affect your risk of heart disease. By replacing foods high in saturated fat (like fatty beef, pork, butter, and cheese) with healthier options (say, low-fat dairy products, fish, nuts, and vegetables), you can lower your blood's cholesterol levels. You should get no more than 5 to 6 percent of your calories from saturated fatabout 120 calories or 13 grams of saturated fat if you consume 2,000 calories per day, according to the American Heart Association.

"It's really important not to go to the extremes with diet, like consuming all fats or all carbs," says Nieca Goldberg, MD, medical director of the Women's Heart Program and senior advisor for Women's Health Strategy at NYU Langone Health in New York. "One of the problems with the ketogenic diet is that because i
t's high in saturated fats, it can raise cholesterol in individuals who are at risk."

It's true that wine is often touted as a potential heart helper, but no research has officially proved a cause-and-effect link between alcohol and better heart health, says the American Heart Association. Plus, going overboard can put your ticker in a risky position.

"Up to one glass of wine per day for women or up to two in men may be beneficial, however, higher amounts can lead to heart muscle damage," says Goldberg. "It can also increase the risk for heart arrhythmias, result in weight gain, and raise blood pressure." And for more helpful information, sign up for our daily newsletter.

There's a reason it's often considered the most important meal of the day: "Eating breakfast is important for everyone," says Haythe. "It provides our bodies with the calories you need to stay focused and energized throughout the day." And although she notes there's no definite link between heart attack and breakfast quite yet, some research has pointed toward its potential protective effects.

Those who skipped breakfast altogether had an 87 percent higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease that those who ate the meal, according to a 2019 study of 6,550 adults published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. This echoed previous research published in the journal Circulation that found men who skipped breakfast had a 27 percent higher risk of coronary heart disease.

Achieving a healthy weight is incredibly important for your heart healthyet nearly 42 percent of U.S. adults are obese, according to the CDC.

"If you're overweight and you lose weight, your risk will be lower than it was before," says Goldberg. "Obesity increases heart disease risk by raising levels of bad cholesterol, triglycerides, lowering HDL [good] cholesterol, increasing levels of sugar which can lead to diabetes, and also raising blood pressure."

Processed foods can be high in added sugar, sodium, saturated fat and other unhealthy ingredients, which contributes to your risk of heart disease. "That's why we often ask people to maintain a healthy diet with fresh fruits and vegetables," says Weinberg.

Ultra-processed foods led to a higher risk of heart disease, according to the results of a 2019 study published in The BMJ. In fact, for every 10 percent increase in the amount of ultra-processed foods, risk of serious cardiovascular events like a heart attack increased by 12 percent.

Eating two servings of red meat, processed meat or poultry (but not fish) weekly was found to increase your risk of heart disease by 3 to 7 percent, according to a 2020 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The same habit was also linked to a 3 percent higher risk of all types of death.

"Red meat and even some of the white meats have [high levels of] saturated fat, and the more saturated fat you eat, the greater the likelihood is that you're going to raise your cholesterol," says Goldberg.

It's not just harmful for your lungssmoking also hurts your heart. Tobacco smoke contains chemicals that harm your blood cells, the structure and function of your blood vessels, and the function of your heart. This increases the risk of plaque build-up in your arteries, which can lead to a heart attack, heart failure, chest pain, and even death, per the National Institutes of Health.

"If you smoke, it is time to stop, and the sooner the better," says Haythe. "Smokers are two to four times more likely to develop heart disease compared with non-smokers." For more on ditching nicotine, here are The 10 Best Ways to Stop Smoking You've Never Tried.

Even if you don't smoke yourself, being exposed to secondhand smoke can still harm your heart. Secondhand smoke causes nearly 34,000 premature deaths among nonsmokers from heart disease every year in the United States, per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Brief exposure can damage the lining of blood vessels and make blood platelets stickier, which can cause deadly heart attack.

If you're experiencing hot flashes, it could be a sign of impending heart trouble. Women who have vasomotor symptoms (like hot flashes and night sweats) are 70 percent more likely to experience cardiovascular events like heart attacks, per a 2020 study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

"A lot of women have a 'protective' effect when they have more estrogen in their system," says Weinberg. "But as their hormones start to change, they may begin to develop high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Statistics show that many women end up having their first heart attack in their ten years after menopause."

It may be important to speak to your doctor about your heart disease risk and precautions you can take if you experience early menopauseone more reason getting regular physicals is so important. A woman's risk of cardiovascular disease increases immensely after menopause. "Early menopause leads to earlier loss of estrogen, as well as concomitant rises in blood pressure and cholesterol, increasing a woman's risk of heart disease," says Haythe.

Sure, fiber helps to keep your digestive system humming, but it also plays a role in your heart health. Soluble fiber found in foods like beans, oats, and flaxseed may help lower your LDL "bad" cholesterol, per the Mayo Clinic. "Low-fiber intake is not one of the major risk factors for having a heart attack, but high-fiber diets do help to lower cholesterol," says Goldberg. "Generally, we have people do a combination of diet and exercise to lower cholesterol."

Each additional 10 grams of fiber consumed per day was linked to a 15 percent lower risk of death from coronary heart disease in a 2012 study of more than 300,000 participants published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Eating too much added sugar, which is added to foods during preparation or processing, can contribute to elevated blood pressure, inflammation, diabetes, weight gain, and fatty liver disease, all of which are linked to a higher risk of heart attack, per Harvard Medical School. "People with lower sugar intake are better off from a vascular standpoint," says Weinberg.

In fact, over the course of 15 years, people who got 17 to 21 percent of their calories from added sugar had a 38 percent greater risk of dying from heart disease compared to those who only got 8 percent of their calories from added sugar in a 2014 JAMA Internal Medicine study.

20 Ways You're Raising Your Risk of a Heart Attack Without Knowing It - Best Life

You Are What Your Cow Eats: The Health Benefits Of Grass-Fed Beef And Dairy – HuffPost

Grass-fed beef and dairy are seemingly more popular than ever though its less of a trend than a revival of traditional farming practices, including those of Indigenous populations around the world whove long understood the benefits of grazing animals.

And there are a number of reasons, from climate change to animal welfare to flavor, to make the switch from buying products from conventionally raised cows if you can afford to. But is there a difference when it comes to nutrition? Is grass-fed beef and dairy really that much healthier for us than grain-fed?

The short answer is yes. Cows are meant to eat grass, not corn, so theyre naturally healthier when they do. But how much so can vary wildly, depending on the nuances of the farming practices. What exactly a cow eats grass is an umbrella term for a diverse variety of forages including chicory, clover and legumes and how they eat and move around the pasture can change the nutritional profile of both their meat and dairy.

Plus, healthy cows on healthy pastures require less antibiotics (commonly used in feedlots), the residue of which can make it into the meat.

But the most studied nutritional difference in grass-fed versus grain-fed beef and dairy is its fatty acid composition specifically, the ratio of pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids to heart-healthy omega-3s. The lower the ratio, the healthier the food.

Grass-fed beef and dairy have a more favorable ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids.

A 2019 study at Michigan State University found that grass-fed beef, depending on the management practices, tends to have a lower omega-6 to omega-3 ratio close to 2:1 on average compared to conventional corn-fed beef, which hovers around 15:1.

Organic Valley

But the study also found that the ratio can vary significantly depending on the specifics of the farming practices. Across the 753 samples they tested, the lowest and most beneficial ratios came from cows eating living forages grasses that are still growing in the ground with longer time on pasture. When producers used bunk feeding where cows are fed hay or grass pellets in a fashion similar to feedlots the omega ratio was often closer to that of conventional beef.

There were some samples in our data set of 27:1, so thats where, just because it says grass-fed on the label, you cant be sure that youre getting a better ratio than you are on grain-fed, said Chad Bitler, a research scientist at Green Acres Foundation who worked on the study. The grass-fed label, no longer regulated by the USDA, can encompass a long list of practices.

We found that the presence of omega-6 is directly associated with whats being fed to the cattle, Bitler said. Omega-6, in the human diet as well, is most prevalent in seed oils and grains like corn and soybeans. So if you look at that in contrast to what were feeding cattle in a feedlot harvested grain, soybeans and corn it makes sense that its going to be high in [omega-6s].

What does the omega ratio mean for our health?

Omega-6 is an essential fatty acid thats beneficial in moderate amounts, but detrimental to our health when over-consumed.

The ideal ratio [in our diets] of omega 6:3 is 1:1 or 2:1, said Diana Rodgers, a registered dietician and author of Sacred Cow. The typical Western diet is about a 20:1 ratio mostly due to a high consumption of processed foods and vegetable oils, she notes. This results in systemic inflammatory issues in the body, causing a host of issues, like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer due to chronic inflammation.

Anything we can do to lower that ratio is a good thing. But that doesnt make grass-fed beef a silver bullet solution for our health.

Because beef is relatively low in fat as it is, swapping grass-fed beef for conventional beef is unlikely to make much of a difference in your overall omega ratio, Rodgers said. Especially if you continue to consume a diet high in omega-6. In other words, a grass-fed burger isnt necessarily healthier if youre eating it with a processed bun and French fries fried in soybean oil. And youd have to eat eight pounds of grass-fed beef to get the same amount of omega-3s in a piece of salmon, she said.

And until the systems change to incentivize healthier farming practices government subsidies make conventional beef and dairy cheaper to produce grass-fed can be cost prohibitive.

Organic Valley

As a dietician, I could never say to someone to only eat organic vegetables or dont eat vegetables at all, Rodgers told HuffPost. So if someone doesnt have access to regenerative grass-fed beef, they should just buy the best they can afford. Maybe you go for ground grass-fed instead of filets and ribeyes, which tend to be expensive anyway. If youre just thinking about your nutrition and youre strapped, Id recommend pasture-raised eggs as opposed to typical eggs, plus grass-fed butter and dairy products in general, Rodgers said.

The omega ratio is more significant in dairy than in beef.

Because dairy has more fat than meat, its fatty acid composition has a greater effect on our diets particularly high-fat dairy like whole milk, cheese and butter. A higher fat content in grass-fed dairy means a naturally higher percentage of omega-3 fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins.

A 2015 study found that both grass-fed and organic dairy which under organic certification, sees more time on grass than conventional had lower levels of saturated fat and higher levels of polyunsaturated fat than grain-fed. And, like beef, the nutritional profile can change significantly depending on the grazing practices.

Biodiverse pastures, where cows are allowed to self-select what they grazed, were found to rear the healthiest omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, plus higher levels of vitamins and antioxidants.

The grazing technique is absolutely vital for the health of the grass, which is vital for the health of the soil, which is vital for the health of the cow, said Jon Bansen, a dairy farmer in Monmouth, Oregon, who sells milk to Organic Valleys Grassmilk brand. The more biodiverse the plants on top of the soil, the more biodiverse the microbes in the soil. All the health youre getting in that grass-fed milk is really straight from the microbes [in the soil], he said. Diverse grasses grown in good soil can increase whats called phytochemical richness the tens of thousands of secondary compounds like alkaloids and carotenoids beneficial to health.

The Certified Organic Grassfed seal, piloted by Organic Valley and Maple Hill, ensures a minimum of 150 days per year on grass and a diet of at least 60% living forages which is more than organic certification alone. But Bansens cows spend an average of 233 days on pasture and get 90% of their diet from living forages supplemented only with balayage (a kind of fermented forage made by tightly wrapping just-harvested grass) in the winter months when grass isnt growing. And he moves his cows around the pasture every 12 hours, in a rotational system that benefits the grass and the soil as much as it does the cow. Grazing practices that enhance and protect biodiversity in the soil naturally yield a more nutritious product.

These newer scientific understandings of biodiversity and nutrition are congruent with, if not informed by, longstanding Indigenous food and agriculture traditions that teach that nutritious food follows from an appropriate and healthy relationship with the landscape, said Chris Newman of Sylvanaqua Farms in Montross, Virginia.

When we dont have a healthy relationship with the landscape, people tend to suffer, Newman said. And I think that has a lot more to do with health outcome and access to a nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle than, Do I pick this grass-fed or the corn-fed version of this product? Weve always known that if we are protecting the land and the water and maintaining an appropriate and healthy relationship with the landscape, then nutritious food follows from that.

The importance of primary care visits during the COVID-19 pandemic – Reading Eagle

Keep seeing your doctor!

This is the best advice for maintaining your health during the coronavirus pandemic. Participating in regular wellness, screening and preventive visits with your primary care provider can help detect any medical conditions and allow for appropriate interventions as soon as possible.

Regular interactions with your primary care provider are especially important for individuals with chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure or congestive heart failure. Lack of proper care for a chronic health condition can worsen short-term symptoms and affect your health long-term.

Maintaining your relationship with your primary care provider is key for protecting your good health during the pandemic, along with wearing masks, practicing social distancing, avoiding crowded places and proper hand hygiene. Following these simple steps can reduce the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19 and any other viral or bacterial infection.

I also encourage my patients to eat more fruits and vegetables and less processed food. Regular exercise will help strengthen the immune system and may help prevent you from getting sick or having complications from any kind of infection. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, I recommend that individuals practice 30 to 40 minutes of aerobic exercise three to four times a week. A properly working home blood pressure cuff is also a good idea, since high blood pressure often has silent symptoms and may go undetected.

As always, if you or a loved one has symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, extreme dizziness or inability to walk, call 911 immediately for evaluation and treatment in an emergency department.

While COVID-19 is still prevalent in our communities, all our offices follow recommended safety measures to maintain a clean and safe environment. All medical staff members and patients will wear a face mask, and there will be a limit on how many patients can be in the office at the same time. All patients will be screened before coming to the office.

We are not currently allowing walk-in patients, and furniture has been removed from the waiting room to allow safe distancing.

While our offices are safe for patient visits, we continue to encourage patients to use virtual visits when it may not be necessary for an in-person appointment. These can include follow-up care and urgent care or select appointments for new patients.

Scheduled virtual visits are available with a Tower Health Medical Group Physician or Advanced Practice Provider (APP), or on demand care is available 24/7 with a Tower Health Urgent Care physician or APP through Virtual Care by TDH.

These telephone or video visits are a very useful tool for physicians to assess patient conditions without bringing you to the office. It is particularly relevant to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions who have been suffering from more severe symptoms of the COVID-19 disease.

Maintaining good health is always important and even more so as our community faces this pandemic. Your Tower Health primary care provider is here for you in facilities that are clean and safe.

North America’s Ready Meals Industry 2020-2025 with the Campbell Soup Company, Nestle, Conagra Brands, and Hormel Food Corporation Dominating -…

DUBLIN, July 27, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The "North America Ready Meals Market- Growth, Trends and Forecast (2020-2025)" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The North American Ready Meals Market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.96% during the forecast period (2020-2025).

The market for ready meals is developing rapidly due to factors, such as the prevalence of a fast-paced lifestyle, especially in urban areas, which is leading to increased demand for precooked foods, among consumers, to save time. The changing food consumption patterns, due to increasing urbanization, is another factor driving the ready meals market.

From the manufacturers point of view, advances in food technology and development in terms of food preparation and processing have enabled the expansion of the market. The companies are increasingly introducing health-based ready meals to cater to the unmet needs of health-conscious individuals, following an active and healthy lifestyle.Key Market Trends

Inclination Towards Organic Ready Meals

Consumers have begun to place more value on food that offers them functional benefits apart from taste, thereby, increasing the demand for healthy, natural, and safe ready meals. These organic food alternatives are positively impacting the growth of the market. Health awareness and concerns for food safety are leading to more consumers carefully selecting their ready meals, to avoid adverse health effects. Also, organic ready meals are deriving a lot of their value through consumer trust and their perception of the products being healthy.

Ready meals are becoming highly popular in the packaged food market due to their convenience and portability. In addition to this, organic ready meals are gaining traction as they are verified natural products that could substitute a full meal, and also, they are healthier than traditional ready meals due to portion-size packaging. With consumers requiring more product varieties among the segment, such as organic, chilled, and frozen pizzas, manufacturers are focusing on more product innovations to suit the new go-to health choices of people across the world.

Supermarket/Hypermarket is the Most Preferred Sales Channel

The strategy followed by the supermarkets to keep the ready meals in a glass refrigerator shelf or an open shelf to capture shopper's attraction is adding advantage in increasing the consumer base.

The large shelf space provided for ready meals, under different product type categories offered by various brands, gives the consumers an opportunity to compare the products and choose the suitable products under their budget range. This, in turn, is strongly augmenting the sales of ready meals through the supermarkets, with a wide variety of products being offered by supermarkets.

The sales of ready meals through supermarkets-owned private labeled brands offer a product by understanding the traditional flavor preferences of the consumers. Moreover, keeping the price either slightly less or the same as that of other brands provide consumers a broader option to choose, as per the taste and budget.

Competitive Landscape

North America's ready meals market is a highly fragmented market with the presence of many players competing for market share. The players are diversifying their product portfolio to include more ready meals into their product range. The players are also focusing on expansion, mergers and acquisitions, and partnerships to meet the demand of consumers. The Campbell Soup Company, Nestle, Conagra Brands, and Hormel Food Corporation are some of the major players in the market.

Power Up With These Health Tips for Gamers – The Good Men Project

People often think that gaming and good health dont mix. Then again, one look at Henry Cavill who, by the way, is an avid fan of Warhammer instantly blows this theory out of the water. That said, you can get fit even if your idea of fun on a Saturday afternoon is killing zombie Nazis.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves and say that gaming does not pose a physical risk. For sure, there is always danger when you have had too much of a good thing. You just have to find ways to make the experience a healthier one for yourself. Again, gaming does not necessarily keep you from leading a healthy lifestyle; you just have to adopt the right lifestyle habits.

Here are some of the best tips you need to level up your health while you gain EXP for your dwarven bandit:

1. Take occasional breaks

This ones a no-brainer but its the most critical part of every gaming session. Spending hours on end in front of the screen can actually impact the quality of your sleep. Moreover, too much screen time can also cause eye-straining and chronic pain along the spine. If you are planning to play multiple sessions, its best to take breaks in between.

Get off your chair and do some stretches. Also, use the 20-20-20 rule to prevent eye strain. Just look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This should give relief to your eyes after long hours of gaming.

2. Swap your snacks

Indeed, no session of Call of Duty is complete without a can of Mountain Dew and a big bag of Doritos, which have become a mainstay in every gamers diet. But apart from lacking the nutrients you actually need to improve your performance, this combo only adds more sodium and sugar to your body.

Instead, opt for healthier alternatives like celery, dark chocolate, and nuts. They might not be included in every gamers ration pack, but these munchies are packed with the minerals and vitamins you need to dominate your enemies.

3. Look for ergonomic equipment

What makes gaming and working a white-collar job similar? They both require you to sit hours on end in front of a computer screen until your neck, shoulders, and back give up. If you are feeling discomfort from your fingers all the way to the nape of your neck and your lower back, you might want to replace most of your equipment with ergonomic pieces.

Sure enough, proper ergonomics are important for gamers as it prevents back injuries, muscle strain, and fatigue. You might want to shop for a gaming chair with comfortable armrests and adequate lumbar support. You can also pick a gaming desk that gives you easy and comfortable access to the keyboard and mouse.

Its fun owning other players in games like PUBG and Battlefield, but without these basic health tips in mind, you might not win a lot offline.

Paulding Boys and Girls Club may be forced to close – The Dallas New Era

Paulding Boys and Girls Club may be forced to shut down after receiving an ultimatum from the organization on July 6th that will require the local chapter to do some fundraising to avoid closing. The club, at 335 Academy Drive in Dallas, has until October 1 to meet certain criteria and raise about $200,000 in order to pass muster and be allowed to continue, according to Raiko Jones, executive director for the Paulding Boys and Girls club. The organization as a whole is facing a deficit so they were looking at clubs to close, Jones said, who spoke by phone.Jones said that as a chapter that serves a rural community Paulding was deemed not necessary to remain open. Ms. Jones said that the cutbacks have a lot to do with the impact of COVID-19.Because we are a non-profit and companies are not donating as heavily as they were before, she said.If the club continues beyond the October deadline, it will operate at a 50% capacity, according to CDC guidelines for social distancing, Jones said. But Jones said that the local club is needed and continues to work in the community with meal distribution, zoom sessions with members, and other socially distanced activities. We have about 179 members with an average daily attendance of 95, she said. And according to information included in a letter to supporters, Our club provides an environment where all youth are safe, visible, and supported. We offer tools and resources enabling our youth to succeed in school, live a healthy lifestyle, and become leaders in their communities. We serve as a bridge connecting families to educational, financial, and social/emotional support. The club provides members academic assistance, exposure to the arts through cultural festivals and plays, access to sports programs, and, most importantly, mentorships.Jones said they are marshaling community support to raise needed funds and also to make some needed roof repairs to the gym, or to secure another building elsewhere.Any level of sponsorship is appreciated and is tax-deductible, Jones said.Make check(s) payable to Paulding County Boys & Girls Club. Include Paulding County Boys & Girls Club in the For line and mail to 335A Academy Dr. Dallas, GA 30132.To obtain more information on making local donations, or with other questions, contact Paulding County Boys & Girls Club at (678) 363- 8570, or email to .

Health and wellbeing: join our new weekly challenge on the road to a fun and fit life – The Northern Echo

Few, if any people will have complete physical, mental and social wellbeing all the time. Trevor Smith, a senior member of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, will join us every week to talk about mental health and wellbeing

Of course, health and wellbeing is a huge subject, so the aim of the article is simply to give some useful insight, to share my experiences and if youd like to, you can even join a friendly challenge that you can share on social media.

This week, after a short introduction I would like to touch on a topic that is a real passion of mine, physical activity. I have been lucky that physical activity has always been a big part of my life. From being part of a local junior football team during my school years, to the 5am runs on the assault course during military basic training. This was followed by the seemingly never-ending circuit training sessions during the rest of my military service. Upon leaving the service I made it into a successful career working in some of the most luxurious five-star hotels across the Middle East. Having now returned to my native North East again doing something I love, supporting primary schools to develop the physical literacy of all their pupils through active learning which will help children enjoy a healthy, fun and fit life. This all came about with the arrival of my daughter which got me wondering about her physical activity journey and what that will look like, something we will cover in more depth over the coming weeks.

Being active is good for your health and wellbeing in many ways

The lockdown restrictions have given us all the opportunity to get more physically active, I wonder how many have? I certainly do not mean that in a preachy kind of way, everyone knows the benefits of regular physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices, its our motivation and confidence that are major factors that could be obstacles in whether we participate.

During the lockdown restrictions, it has been great to see the sense of community responsibility in regard to protecting the NHS with most people observing the strict social distancing rules.

We can all continue to protect the NHS in other ways even when the lockdown restrictions have been completely lifted. Did you know the gov.uk website shows the most recent spending figures prior to Covid-19 for the direct cost to the NHS for overweight and obesity-related ill-health was an estimated 6.1 billion in a single year?

We can all take some form of physical activity, I am not suggesting for one moment that you should immediately go out and try to run a 10K, but if you can great do it. It must be right for your circumstances and it can seem an overwhelming task to begin with. However, moderate physical activity can be a brisk walk, 30 minutes of gardening or even doing household chores incorporating some silky dance moves. My wife will testify that I love doing the washing up while dancing along with the music of George Benson playing in the background. Well, now that I have shared that little secret then maybe I can persuade you to share some of your physical activities.

This weeks challenge

This week I would like you to take part in some form of physical activity, it can be anything at all, something you already do regularly or something you are trying for the first time. Share your photos and comments with us and tag us on Twitter at @TheNorthernEcho and @TSmith_PE

If you are looking for some inspiration for activities to do with the family, try the Stay Active resources which are completely free at http://www.premier-education.com/stay-active/ - check out all the activity cards and videos under the Physical section.

Be inspired to join Trevor's weekly challenge

If you would like to let me know how you have increased your normal levels of activity over this lockdown period, ask a question or suggest a topic that you would like me to cover in the coming weeks, you can contact me at tsmith@premier-education.com

Good luck

Trevor works at Premier Education. He is a senior member of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and a member of the International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA).

Vegetarian Bachelorette Ali Fedotowsky on What She Eats in a Day – The Beet

America first fell in love with outspokenAli Fedotowsky-Manno on the reality TV showThe Bachelor, andcan never forget the moment when she walked out onJake Pavelka, quitting the show to "focus on her career." Thereality star favorite was chosen to return as"The Bachelorette," in 2010 when 25 bachelorscompeted for her love. Since then, Ali broke ties with the show completely and married Kevin Manno in 2017 and had two children with the TV host, Molly, and Riley.

The joyful and bubbly blonde prioritizes the things she loves: Family, vegetarian food, and being a hardworking mother, developing her career around her passion for a mostly plant-based lifestyle. Fedotowsky, who calls herself a vegetarian, only showcases plant-based products on her social channels from what we can see. She is the founderAli Manno, where she presents a stress-free and lightheartedapproachfor mothers, plant-based eaters, and the contemporary chic fashion-lover.

In a sad turn of events for Ali, which she shared this week, she recently lost a pregnancy to miscarriage and she wanted to share this with her fans so that it would not be something women feel they have to be secretive about if it were to happen to them. She is ever supportive of other women, andher heartbreaking IG post about it is another example of that.

Ali has been a vegetarian for 8 years andstarted the diet "on a whim," she tells Women's Health. "A friend suggested I try pescatarian. I thought I'd do it for like two weeks, and then here I am eight years later. I've never gone back."

On her blog, Ali shares delicious recipes and does not hold back from indulging in carbs. She loves pasta and bread--as do her children. In the photo below, Ali makes a sweet and savory snack, Crostini with California Walnuts with her oldest daughter Molly, and emphasizes the health benefits of walnuts and the importance ofgetting your dose of Omega 3's. All of her recipes are 100% children-approved and she inspires moms everywhere to try to feed their kid whole foods since she posts pictures of her kids loving healthy plant-based snacks!

Ali is no stranger to the meat-free diet but she still enjoys her treats, she says, and the point is not to deprive yourself. Her approach appears to be working: She eats what she enjoys and she feels and looks amazing. In the interview with Women's Health Magazine. Ali says swearing off meat has worked for her body and eliminated a lot of her junk food cravings. "I eat when I'm hungry and I don't deprive myself," she says. "If I want something, I've let myself have it. I think it's important to enjoy food and to focus on having a healthy lifestyle instead of dieting."

Hertrick to balancing being a busy mom, a CEO, and a wife: Ali likes to make convenient food healthy, which means that for lunch she will create a big veggie platter and eat it all afternoon. Or she will make a clean pasta without loading it up with meat sauce. Ali was asked in the interview what she typically eats in a day, which is mostly plant-based food that you can make too.

Starting with breakfast: Molly and Riley will eat a PB & J with Walnut Butter and notesthat she loves Crazy Go Nuts Walnut Butter. Ali admits she works out hard in the morning, saying, "People joke that I should have been a professional athlete because I'm a crazy person when I work out." After a big sweat and lots of calories burned, Ali said: "I crave pasta in the morning and people think that's insane, but I've been eating pasta for breakfast since high school." She eats a bowl of pasta on some mornings but other times she will enjoy a big bowl of broccoli and edamame with her favoriteWalnut Parmesan Cream. "It doesn't actually have any cream in it but is the best recipe ever. I literally make it every day," she told Women's Health.

Next, a light lunch for a busy mom: As seen on Ali's blog, she likes to keep lunch light. Her favorites are mini potato skins topped with fresh guacamole, and a healthy farro bowl made with fresh vegetables and can simply be made vegan without the added parmesan cheese.

It's healthy snack time:Ali's snack when she's on the go is an apple-pie Lrabar that's made with 6 ingredients: Dates, almonds, green apples, walnuts, raisins, and cinnamon. She says she tends to stick to more healthy convenient snacks. "I love to buy veggie trays and leave them on the counter so we can come up and grab the veggies throughout the day."

Dinner is served: Ali likes to serve healthy dinners that include complex carbs and plant-based proteins. She told the magazine thatshe "whips up all sorts of plant-based combos using ingredients like quinoa and black beansand plenty of green veggies. Vegetarian "chicken" nuggets also make regular appearances on the kiddos' plates." In addition, she adds, "Of course, pasta is also a staple at dinnertime."

Dessert is simple:Ali said she loves to relax once the kids are in bed and sip an organic wine, andindulge inchocolate chip cookies. "ThoseTate's Chocolate Chip Cookiesare so stinking good. I just have one of those and drink my wine, and it isheaven." Tates cookies are vegetarian, but sadly., because they contain eggs and butter, arenot yet vegan. So if you're looking for a delicious store-bought cookie brand that is completely vegan, check out The Beet's favorites here.

Amazfit Bip S smartwatch review: Price and battery life will smoke the competition – CNET

The Amazfit Bip S isn't the best smartwatch I've ever tested -- not even close. But it's definitely the longest-running one. I wore it for almost 10 days straight without having to charge it once, and that's a lot more than I can say for its pricier competitors. But if battery life alone isn't enough to get your attention, the $69 price tag should seal the deal. (UK prices weren't available, but it's AU$119 in Australia, which is about 65.)

The Bip S is the third variant of the Amazfit Bip (along with the Amazfit Bip Lite). Created by Chinese company Huami in 2018, the original Bip was a fan favorite from the get-go. It did the basic smartwatch tasks for much less than competitors, and it lasted up to 45 days on a single charge. CNET's Scott Stein gave it high praise, calling it one of the best low-key smartwatches around.

Subscribe to the Mobile newsletter, receive notifications and see related stories on CNET.

The Bip S has better fitness features and a slightly better screen than its predecessor, but it hasn't changed much in the last two years. And while it's still one of the best deals out there, it lags a bit behind others, like the Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch, when it comes to features and connectivity.

The Amazfit Bip S comes in four colors, with a new two-toned pink option.

Save for a few new color options (pink and green) and a brighter display, the Bip S looks like a carbon copy of the original Bip. And by that, I mean it looks like a plastic Apple Watch, with a much thicker bezel and lighter frame.

It's definitely not the most attractive smartwatch I've laid my eyes on, but it's practical and more comfortable to wear than some of the more premium, heavier watches that are bulkier. It's so light that I even forgot I had it on when I slept.

But the biggest price compromise comes at the expense of the screen. It's always on, which is a nice perk, but it's not quite as sharp, bright or responsive as a phone screen. The backlight also didn't always turn on when I needed it to. Sometimes it works on demand, but I had to exaggerate raising my wrist more often than I'd like to get it to turn on. And as mentioned before, it's not as sensitive to touch. I had to swipe or tap the screen a few times to get it to respond. When it does light up or brighten though, it's clear to see in broad daylight.

The Bip S includes a few more watch faces than its predecessors, as well as the ability to customize some of the existing ones.

The original Amazfit Bip covered the basics when it came to fitness tracking, but the Bip S takes it a step further by adding more workouts and better metrics.

It can now log up to 10 different activities including yoga, weights and swimming. Its 5ATM water resistance makes it safe for both pool and open-water swims, and its built-in GPS means you can leave your phone on dry land while you're in the water or out on a run.

Since testing the Amazfit Bip S, I've been able to track my stats accurately. But I have to remember to do it properly. For example, the dial button can be programmed as a shortcut to start workouts, which is convenient. But for running (or other outdoor workouts) I still have to press the screen to confirm GPS connection before actually registering the run. This defeats the purpose of having the shortcut in the first place. The first few times I took it out, I forgot to confirm and it didn't log my run. Because it doesn't have automatic workout detection, you have to start it manually to actually log your workouts -- yet it will pause automatically when it senses that you've stopped moving for a while.

Like its predecessor, the Bip S has continuous heart-rate monitoring. During exercises, it broke down my information into zones on the mobile app to show whether I was in a light, intensive, aerobic, anaerobic or Vo2 max (maximum oxygen consumption) heart-rate zone. This is similar to what other sports watches like Fitbit and Garmin do, but because the Bip S' results didn't always reflect the intensity at which I perceived my workout, I'm skeptical of its accuracy.

The biggest upgrades on the Amazfit Bip S are health and fitness related.

In addition to the usual steps and distance, the Bip S adds a new metric called PAI (Personal Activity Intelligence)., which grades you on how much activity you've done during the day This means that rather than relying on step count or calories burned, the Bip S uses heart rate data (along with basic demographic information) to determine whether or not the user was able to raise their heart rate long enough throughout the day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. When this is achieved, the risk of developing chronic illnesses like heart disease, hypertension and diabetes lowers, according to Huami.

The idea itself is not novel and it's similar to the move ring on the Apple Watch and zone minutes on Fitbit devices -- all of which are activity metrics that go beyond step counting. But it's new to the Bip family, and it was a good way to keep myself honest about how much activity I was doing (or not doing) during the day. Having it actually motivated me to keep going throughout the week.

The biggest deal-breaker for me about the Amazfit is that it didn't really work well as a "smart" watch. Technically it's compatible with iOS and Android, but when I tried to use it with my iPhone, the connection was unreliable. I'd stop receiving phone notifications on the watch, and I'd have to re-pair the app with the phone a few times. A firmware update did help with the connectivity issues, but it didn't completely solve the problem. Seeing my data on the phone app also took a while to sync, too.

Even when the Amazfit displayed my notifications properly, I couldn't do much with them. Because it doesn't have a microphone, dictation is also out of the question, so don't think about programming quick replies.

All in all, besides a few basic apps for the weather and music control (which is a step up from the original Bip), the watch basically mirrors your phone and doesn't have many standalone functions. Even the alarm app has to be programmed on the phone, and there are no mobile payments of any sort.

Even with its spotty connectivity and mediocre smart features, this watch keeps going long after its competitors give up. The fact that I didn't have to sideline it to a charger at the end of the day meant it never left my wrist.

Huami says it can go up to 40 days on a charge if you're doing the bare-bone functions, although realistically I'd expect about 15 days worth of battery life. Or 10 days if you're firing on all cylinders, like myself (max screen brightness and GPS workouts on a regular basis, for example).

Beyond the convenience of not having to charge it at the end of each day, having it on 24-7 meant I tracked my sleep a lot more regularly than I did with other smartwatches.

The Bip S gave me a sleep score in the morning based on a number of different factors, like sleep duration, bedtime and quality of sleep compared to other users. As a mother of two small children, I know my sleep habits have room for improvement, so I was shocked to find that I've been averaging about a 90 (out of 100) every night. So either Amazfit users have deplorable sleep habits, or it's not very good at determining whether I'm in bed nursing the baby or actually asleep. I suspect it might be a combination of both.

But even with my skepticism, having this data over a longer period of time helped me identify the times when I was getting the most restful sleep and it changed my bedtime habits (to an earlier hour) so I could maximize that deep sleep cycle. Whether it actually helps me feel more rested during the day is TBD.

If you're looking for a smartwatch to free you from your phone once in a while, this is not it. In that case you're better off getting an Apple Watch Series 3 or Galaxy Watch Active 2. The Amazfit Bip S is more in line with the Fitbit Charge, a dumb sidekick that tracks your sleep and activity levels and occasion
ally lets you know when someone is trying to reach you. But for some, that's all they really need. And for $69 it's as good of a deal on an entry-level smartwatch as you can get, especially if you're on the fence about getting one in the first place.

After this review, I'm probably going to retire the Bip S for a smarter alternative. But I'm definitely going to miss that enduring battery life. And I agree with CNET's Rick Broida, who said he might even consider going back to it when he travels to savelosing yet another cable to the hotel room power outlet. But we'll see about that once "traveling" becomes a thing again.
