Cameron Diaz gives a happy sigh. Im really excited, she says to her friend Katherine Power. On the table are two bottles of their new wine, Avaline, launched just last month.We were mad for a while, Diaz adds. You were a little bit more mad than I was. You had some real anger.

Anger? About wine?

When Diaz and Power decided to make their own wine, they discovered theres more to it than fermented grape juice. No transparency, no labelling, says Power, so shocked by what she found thatshe threw out all her wine.

The pair, speaking on Instagram, say they became determined to make a clean, chemical-free wine and are now, according to their publicist, on a mission to bring transparency to the wine industry.

Theyre not the only ones. Out of nowhere has come Good Clean Wine, which pairs with a healthy lifestyle; the Wonderful Wine Company, which offers wellness without deprivation; and Scout & Cellar, a multilevel-marketing company that boasts of its clean-crafted wine and intends to disrupt the wine industry and do better for the planet, among others.

Dr Creina Stockley sighs when she hears this over Zoom. Ive been in the industry for close to 30 years, and this comes up periodically, just under different names minimal intervention is one she remembers.Its a marketing exercise.

A pharmacologist and lecturer at the University of Adelaide, Stockley is a world authority on wine additives and processing aids, the heart of this issue.

Unlike the food industry, winemakers dont have to list ingredients. This has opened a door for opportunists, who profit by claiming that other wineries fill their wines with noxious chemicals (they dont).

The clean-wine companies are chasing a lucrative prize a piece of the 45 billionwellness market. A Scout & Cellar recruitment video notes that 68 per cent of consumers will pay more for products if theyre free of ingredients perceived as bad; disparaging the competition is good marketing. Its also working; the company reportedly made 16 millionin 2018, its first year.

Strangely, for companies committed to ripping the lid off the wine industry, the clean-wine gang is pretty quiet about where their own wines come from, and most declined to be interviewed. Where many wineries love giving encyclopaedic detail about the hill where their grapes are grown, for example, the Wonderful Wine Company simply says its white comes from France.

People are very interested in origin stories, says Brian Smith, chief executive of Winc Wines, which launched the Wonderful Wine Co in May, but the modern consumer is looking for, How does this fit into my life?

Winc Wines, which Smith founded with Geoff McFarlane, is one of the United Statesmost sophisticated online direct-wine businesses. Asked how Wonderful Wines offer wellness without deprivation, Smith says they use organic grapes wherever possible and dont manipulate their wines.

Which is an interesting claim, because wine doesnt make itself. If you drop Vitis vinifera grapes in a tub and leave them, they ferment, but what youll get is vinegar or cloudy, sour wine. Winemaking is both art and science, and, over centuries, winemakers have learned to prevent taints and spoilage, from using sulphur dioxide as an antibacterial and antioxidantto dropping egg whites into the wine to remove harsh-tasting tannins, a process known as fining.

Yet only 40 years agoa wine could be good one year and horrible the next. Since thenan explosion of microbiology, chemistry and viticulture research has driven a quality revolution.

Todays winemakers have an array of yeasts, antimicrobials and fining agents to choose from. Some function as ingredients that go into the wine, like extra acidity to perk up grapes from warm regions. Others are processing aids, mostly used to take things out of the wine.

Some have terrifying names, like polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (or PVPP, for short), but its the same binding agent found in aspirin tablets. Its sometimes used to reduce colour, to achieve pale pink ross. Such aids are legally defined and heavily regulated, and they dont stay in the wine.

But all this research has also allowed commercial winemakers to create bland, homogeneous wines that taste the same each year, regardless of vintage variation. In the US, some mass-market red wines have grape concentrate added the best known of which is Mega Purple to give extra colour and sweetness. Its illegal to add concentrate in the EU, where nothing can be added that changes the essential nature of a wine.

Many wine lovers are appalled by such practices, which render terroir the origin, or sense of place redundant.The backlash has led to a new category: natural wines. These are made by the nothing added, nothing taken away principle, usually from organic grapes.

But between natural and mass-market wines lies a vast and varied world. Just because winemaking tools exist doesnt mean people use them wineries dont spend money on things they dont need, and artisanal winemakers, in particular, pride themselves on their hands-off approach.

Stockley says, in any case, that modern wine needs less intervention than in the past, partly because winemakers have learned to make things smarter and better, but mostly because of improved grape growing. Some winemaking aids are no longer permitted; until 1997, animal blood could be used for fining. Ferrocyanide, which Scout & Cellar claims is a common additive in commercial wines, was a processing aid thats no longer legal.

So why not list ingredients? Dr Ignacio Snchez Recarte, secretary general of the Comit Europen des Entreprises Vins, which represents the EUs wine sector, says its because wine isnt made by an industrial process. While, say, a commercial bakery works to a strict, unchanging recipe, winemaking decisions change each vintage. Asking a small winery to update labels every year would impose an economic burden.

If you have anything in the wine with potential allergenic effects, you are obliged to indicate that on the label, however, and he adds that the wine sector understands modern consumers want transparency. Legislative change is under way in the EU.

I expect that by the end of 2022 there will be labels on wine, he says, adding that they will be either traditional labels or elabels. They will list ingredients, not processing aids nor will they show if the producer used pesticides.

Now youre opening up a can of worms, says Jamie Goode PhD, wine writer and author of wine textbooks. You cant grow grapes from Vitis vinifera without spraying eight to 14 times a year. The problem is mildew and then, at the end of the growing season, rot.

One of wines paradoxes is that the most prized, expensive grapes come from regions prone to fungal diseases, which can only be treated with commercial pesticides or, for organic growers, applications of copper sulphate.

Its all about the concentration, says Goode, adding: There are strict regulations concerning their use and concerning residue levels that are permitted. Wine is one of the most regulated and safe products there is.

Promising ultraviolet-light therapies are being trialled that may eliminate pesticides forever, but, for the moment, there is another potential way to avoid them. Its to farm in drier, warmer areas with less disease pressure, like Languedoc, in southern France birthplace of the Wonderful Wines white.

There are plenty of warm regions producing grapes at lower cost. California also has a grape glut right now, and theres more wine in tanks than many wineries know what to do with. Some use the best for themselves, then quietly sell the rest to whats known as the bulk wine market, where everything from commodity grapes to certified organic wines are sold.

Wineries also use their excess to make on-demand wines for buyers. In a twist, these exclusive wines often come from big wineries; despite being thoroughly conventional, they can even be marketed as minimal intervention or clean, because these are meaningless terms.

< p>Its a type of wine known as private label, which can be highly profitable because the seller doesnt have vineyards or wineries to maintain. Most winemakers talk obsessively about their land and heritage (try and stop them), so if these details are missing or vague, the wine could be private label, although some mass-market brands also omit this information.

Diaz and Powers Avaline, for example, is silent on who makes it. Then theres Scout & Cellars $25 (21) Gallivant chardonnay, whose web copy says its made by a fifth-generation family winery founded in Monterey in 1883, but not which one. In contrast, consider the $18 (15) Wente Vineyards Morning Fog chardonnay, which has a downloadable technical sheet explaining the region, soils and winemaking. Coincidentally, its also made by a fifth-generation family winery founded in 1883 in Monterey.

Unfortunately, all wine, however its made, contains a dangerous chemical: alcohol. No matter how sustainably the grapes are grown nor how consciously its made, there is no wine that wont deliver a hangover if you drink too much.

Wine is not a wellness potion. Its a snapshot of time, a manifestation of the place and the people who made it, which works a special magic when paired with friends and food.

When it comes to clean wine, the only thing being cleaned is your wallet. Guardian

DEAR ABBY: I have a wonderful husband of almost 20 years and two teenage children. My husband is incredibly hardworking in his stressful career and has provided a very comfortable life for us. The trouble is, he puts work ahead of any self-care. He works most waking hours, doesn't eat well, exercises rarely, is overweight the list goes on. When I ask/encourage/nag him to make positive lifestyle choices, he reminds me of the life insurance he has and turns it around on me and says I am stressing him.

Abby, I love my husband, and I worry that this will cut his life and our life together short. Can you help?

Beside myself with worry

DEAR BESIDE YOURSELF: I wish I could wave a magic wand and make your husband receptive to what you are trying to do for him. But until he's ready to address these issues and do something about them, nothing will change.

If he enjoys his career and takes pride in the fact that you and your children are and will be provided for, then he's living the life he has chosen for himself. This does not mean you must give up entirely suggesting healthy lifestyle choices, but perhaps do it a little less often and in terms of activities he might enjoy.

DEAR ABBY: After a long and successful life, my uncle recently passed away. His wife is my mother's sister. During one of our phone calls, she told me she and my cousins had written his obituary and that it would be published soon. To my shock and dismay, I located the obituary and discovered that my sister and I were not mentioned as his niece and nephew. I am still terribly hurt. Why would they do this?

My sister and I grew up spending every major holiday and birthday with my uncle. The obituary did include his other niece and nephew who live on the opposite side of the country and kept in touch only with an occasional phone call and holiday card. I included my cousins in my parents' and sister's obituaries, all of whom have passed in the last few years.

I feel that I must address this with them, but I don't want to add to the pain they are going through while they mourn their loss. I now dread attending the memorial because I'm worried friends of our family may bring it up, and I won't know what to say.

It is entirely possible that the obituary was written when your aunt and cousins weren't thinking straight, which is why you were omitted. If someone brings it up at the memorial which I doubt will happen rather than nurse hurt feelings, I hope you will point out that the family, including you, is grieving. Period.

DEAR ABBY: How do you politely ask a neighbor to mow his lawn at reasonable times of the day? Mine seems to be doing it three days a week and always when we want to enjoy our backyard.

DEAR TRYING: If you are on speaking terms with this neighbor, explain that the noise from his lawnmower interferes with your ability to enjoy your backyard and ask POLITELY if he could schedule it at another hour of the day. If he is a good neighbor, he should be willing to accommodate you.

Karen greeted me at Market last Friday with Guess what? We have TWO tamale vendors! When Juanita isnt able to be here, Juan Morales will occupy her spot, selling his moms tamales Rosas Tamales.

Splendid! I replied. I know we have vendors as well as customers who need their weekly homemade tamale fix.

As the morning progressed, I kept an eye on Juans booth. Busy busy! When there was a lull, I popped around, pen in hand, and asked him for a smidgen of his time. Yes, of course! he replied with a smile as warm and inviting as his tamales. What would you like to know?

Well, Im always curious as to what brings people to Teton Valley..., I began.

My family and I were living in California in the 1990s. It became too crowded, so we moved to Jackson in 1998. We enjoyed it there, but it was getting expensive. So, in 2001, we moved to Victor. After graduating from Teton High School, I left to go to college. But, I came back to the Valley, and about five years ago, started making tamales. Tamales are a traditional Mexican holiday food, and I wanted to provide a healthy lifestyle option for the traditionally heavy Latino food. So I give them a healthy boost using ingredients from all three food groups (protein, carbs, fat). Id known about the many farmers and producers here in the Valley, so I knew Id be able to use locally-sourced ingredients. My goal is to create foods that are healthy, affordable, and delicious, using as many local ingredients as possible. I guess you might say I provide traditional Latino eating adventures using locally-sourced, healthy ingredients for people on the go!

Another goal I have is to use ingredients that become available according to growing charts, not by mono-cropping. Our small farms here make that happen, and they are all making big changes in doing so. Look at the diversity of their crops, and the ways they treat their land, their animals, and their water. We need to keep that going by reinforcing local consumption. In doing so, we are supporting our local economy and improving our land. Its a win-win situation!

Juan pauses. Im scribbling away like mad, hoping to catch everything hes saying. He smiles broadly at me and continues, In addition, I make shaved ice with fruits to bring to Sunday soccer in Jackson. I use mangos, pineapples, bananas, and as much local fruit (Idaho apples and pears, and Colorado peaches) as possible. The left-over fruits I make into my Naughty Fruit. They have an extra twang I add to the process.

My first commercial space in the Valley was next to Suba in Victor. They were very nice and supportive. I sold burritos there as well as green smoothies I made with celery, kale, and yogurt. I also did catering, and sold at the Farmers and Peoples Markets in Jackson.

How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected your business? I asked.

Big time, Juan laughs in spite of himself. March is when I usually start selling in Jackson at the Peoples Market. Not this year! Even my on-line business went out the window! A big financial blow, but Im not down. Times like these can make you stronger, forcing you to become creative. Rethink new strategies.

In March, my family and I opened a new shop in the Industrial Center here in Driggs next to Rob Dupres Chasing Paradise. Since then, my Naughty Fruit sales have increased. In August, Im planning a Kick Starter campaign to grow that business even more.

Where are your mom and dad? I asked.

Back at the shop in Driggs making more tamales for tomorrows Market in Jackson. Theyre in their sixties, but they love to participate. I enjoy being out selling, getting to know my neighbors. Interesting how tough times give us all opportunities to connect.

Two New Rapid COVID-19 Tests To Be Rolled Out in the UK Ahead of Winter – Technology Networks

Millions of new rapid coronavirus tests will be rolled out across NHS hospitals, care homes and labs from next week.

- Both tests will be able to detect COVID-19 and other winter viruses in just 90 minutes- New tests will hugely increase testing capacity ahead of winter, delivering fast results that will help to break chains of transmission quickly

Millions of ground-breaking rapid coronavirus tests will be rolled out to hospitals, care homes and labs across the UK to increase testing capacity ahead of winter. The tests will enable clinicians and NHS Test and Trace to quickly advise on the best course of action to stop the spread of the virus.

Two new tests both able to detect the virus in just 90 minutes will be made available to NHS hospitals, care homes and labs. The 2 tests will be able to detect both COVID-19 and other winter viruses such as flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The tests do not require a trained health professional to operate them, meaning they can be rolled out in more non-clinical settings.

This will help to further strengthen the coronavirus response this winter, arming both clinicians and NHS Test and Trace with the ability to distinguish between COVID-19 cases, which have specific self-isolation requirements, and other winter viruses.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said:"Were using the most innovative technologies available to tackle coronavirus. Millions of new rapid coronavirus tests will provide on-the-spot results in under 90 minutes, helping us to break chains of transmission quickly.The fact these tests can detect flu as well as COVID-19 will be hugely beneficial as we head into winter, so patients can follow the right advice to protect themselves and others. I am hugely grateful for the excellent work done by DnaNudge and Oxford Nanopore to push forward these life-saving innovations in coronavirus testing."

A new test that uses DNA to detect the virus will be rolled out across NHS hospitals from September, with 5,000 DNA machines, supplied by DnaNudge, to provide 5.8 million tests in the coming months.

Separately, 450,000 90-minute LamPORE swab tests will also be available across adult care setting and laboratories from next week, supplied by Oxford Nanopore.DNA testing for coronavirus

5,000 DNA Nudgebox machines, supplied by DnaNudge, will be rolled out across NHS hospitals in the UK to analyse DNA in nose swabs, providing a positive or negative result for COVID-19 in 90 minutes, at the point of care. The machines will process up to 15 tests on the spot each day without the need for a laboratory.

The DNA COVID-19 test machines are currently operating in 8 London hospitals:

- St Marys Hospital in Paddington- Charing Cross Hospital- West Middlesex University Hospital- Chelsea and Westminster Hospital- Royal Hospital Chelsea- Queen Charlottes and Chelsea Maternity Hospital- the Renal Transplant Centre at Hammersmith Hospital- the Tower Hamlets Centre for Mental Health at Mile End Hospital

The machines are located in cancer wards, A&E and maternity wards to protect those most at risk.

The government is signing contracts with more companies to produce machines for DNA coronavirus testing.

Rapid LamPORE tests

The new rapid LamPORE test will be able to process swab and saliva samples to detect the presence of COVID-19 in 60 to 90 minutes.

The new test has the same sensitivity as the widely used PCR swab test, but can be used to process swabs in labs, as well as on-location through pop up labs. The desktop GridION machine can process up to 15,000 tests a day, or the palm-sized MinION can process up to 2,000 tests a day for deployment in a near-community pop-up lab.

450,000 of the new LamPORE tests will be available from next week across adult care settings, NHS laboratories and lighthouse laboratories, with millions more tests to be rolled out later in the year.

Details of positive test results will be shared with NHS Test and Trace, so close contacts can self-isolate in line with guidance.

Hypomania: All you need to know – The Indian Express

Hypomania, even though associated with bipolar disorder, can also occur on its own. A form of mental illness, hypomania is characterised by a period of over-activeness which can impact the day-to-day functioning of a person suffering from depression, according to established studies. Hypomania is characterised by elevated mood in addition to behaviour change including increased energy, increased confidence, increased activity, impulsivity, irritability, disinhibition, and a reduced need for sleep, as per American Psychological Association (APA, 1994 and World Health Organization (2010).

Less severe than mania, which can last for a week and may cause impairment in an individual, hypomania is said to be common in those experiencing type-2 bipolar disorder which is often triggered by less and disturbed sleep, drug abuse and high levels of stress.

While the burst of energy is sometimes associated with increasing creativity and productive energy, it is one of the most worrisome suspicion of bipolar disorder, as per various studies.

Signs and symptoms

As per National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) 2018-study, Hypomania Symptoms Across Psychiatric Disorders, hypomanic episodes last for a distinct period of four or more days, with elevated, expansive or irritable mood, among other symptoms that are observable by others but of insufficient severity or compromise of functionality to meet criteria for full-fledged mania episodes. While mania is more distinctive and easier to identify than hypomania, manic episodes are significantly less frequent than hypomania, and occur only in a specific subtype of Bipolar Spectrum Disorders (BSD). Thus, accurately identifying a current or prior episode of hypomania is decisive for the differential diagnosis of BSD.

A hypomanic does not feel like taking rest, is highly energetic all the time, and classically, there is a decreased need for sleep. Other associated characteristics may include:*Increased confidence*Racing thoughts/Ideas*More talkative/jokes around*Engaged in multi-tasking*Easy distractibility*Impulsive risky behavior such as unwanted shopping spree, foolish business investments, or engaging in inappropriate sexual activities.

Usually, the increased functional capacity and other characteristics are only seen during hypomanic episodes in an otherwise normal person. It does not cause issues with work or socialising. But, if these issues are not related to substance abuse or medications, then you may need to talk to a doctor for suspicion of BSD. Bipolar disorder can not be left untreated as it may lead to serious problems, asserted Dr Das.

Treatment

As per Psychiatric Issues in Neurologic Practice book by Barry S Fogel, Melissa Frumin, in Office Practice of Neurology (second edition), 2003, patients with hypomania, or with a history of hypomania and depression, need mood-stabilising medication. The first mood-stabilising medication of proven benefit was lithium, which remains the treatment of choice for bipolar disorder with prolonged manic and depressive episodes. It was subsequently discovered that carbamazepine and valproate were effective for bipolar disorder and might be superior to lithium for patients with mixed manic and depressive symptoms or with rapid alternation between hypomania and depression. The efficacy of antiepileptic drugs for mood disorders is not predicted by any electroencephalographic finding, as per the book.

As per Harvard Health, for mild or moderate episodes, it may be possible for a person to deal with hypomania by adopting basic healthy lifestyle habits. That means eating regular meals, doing physical activity every day to burn away extra energy, and trying to get at least seven or eight hours of sleep per night. It also states that it may help to learn to recognise common triggers of hypomania, such as sleep deprivation or too much caffeine.

Keep a check on mood swings, make a note in diary, talk to your psychiatrist regularly via teleconsultation, take your medicines regularly, dont stop the treatment on your own, and ask for help, whenever needed, said Dr Das.

Google is widely famous for the perks it gives to its employees. These perks include free and limitless options of restaurants and cafes on its campus. Not just restaurants, Google gives its employees several snacks stations all around its offices. No Google employee is ever more than 150 feet away from some kind of a food station at their office.

This led to a constant increase in the weight of Googles employees. Unhealthy choices of snacks were slowly stacking up, adding around a pound of fat every year. This is a major problem because a few extra pounds are okay, but an unhealthy lifestyle with bad food choices can cost us in the form of diseases like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, etc.

So, what did Google do? Here are some clever and subtle health hacks that Google used, that you can follow, too, to improve your own food habits and health.

All plates in the buffet line for Google employees are smaller. Theyre only eight to ten inches wide, lesser than the usual twelve inches wide plates that were available earlier. This efficiently reduced the portion sizes without any extra effort.

Keeping smaller plates in our own kitchen can effectively monitor our portion sizes too.

The salad bar and vegetables became the first thing in the buffet line as soon as the employees entered. When we are hungry, we tend to eat the food that we see first. This way, employees filled more of their plate with vegetables, and by the time they reached the meat and dessert sections, they didnt have a lot of space left on their plates.

In just a month, the consumption of vegetables by Google employees increased by 2/3rd times than before. And also started selling 2300 breakfast salads in just two years, which were at 0 before.

We can adopt this health hack in our lives by placing our fruits and vegetables on the front racks in our fridge and not hidden away in the bottom drawer! Filling your stomach with vegetables before other food is a nice way to keep a healthy diet.

Google installed chilled Spa Water canisters everywhere around their offices. This water, bubbling with strawberries, lemon and cucumbers, made water consumption an easy and attractive choice.

Sodas and other sugary drinks were move to more distant places. They were not removed, as Google believes that people should be able to make their own choice. They were just kept out of sight and harder to access.

This way, water became the most attractive, accessible and the easiest choice to make for employees. Water consumption drastically increased.

Whenever you feel like drinking a sugary soda, tell yourself to drink a glass of water first. And check, are you still craving that soda?

The coffee machine and the snack station which had stuff like cookies, chips, candy, etc. were only at a mere distance of 6.5 feet. When the Google employees came to get a coffee, they also grabbed a snack along with it.

This distance was now increased. The snack station was kept at a distance of 17 feet from the coffee machine. This increase in 5-6 steps made a huge difference. This health hack reduced snacking by 23% for men and 17% for women.

Often, we dont realize how much we are snacking in between meals, and that too on unhealthy foods. Keeping them farther away from us can be a good option.

Earlier, different chocolates and candy were kept in clear glass candy jars, showcasing those delicious and colourful options of sweets. This meant that even if someone did not think of eating them, theyd be reminded to eat candy because of their clear display.

To stop this, unhealthy snacks like candy were now kept in opaque jars. This might not seem like a trivial difference, but keeping snacks out of sight also reduces the craving for them.

We tend to crave such snacks when theyre lying in plain sight. Several studies have shown that given an attractive prompt to act (seeing a chocolate bar) and convenient access to it (keeping it somewhere close to you), will encourage you to eat more.

For example, youre more likely to eat that bag of Lays if its right at your bedside table, versus if it was hidden away at the back of your kitchen cupboard (or not kept at home at all). Keeping fresh fruits in plain sight can be a better move.

Behavioural studies have shown that more often than not, we take the easier path and make the easier choice in our usual routine.If something is harder to do, youll be resistant to do it. This can be used for better or for worse.

To make a healthy change in your life, you only have to make THE HEALTHY CHOICE= THE EASY CHOICE. Simply put, if you want to do more of something, make it easier to do so; be it food or any other habit. These health hacks are easy to do and make a change.

Google used this exact technique through these health hacks. They made vegetables and fruits and water an easy choice to make. And the unhealthy options were places with resistance, so the employees were unlikely to make that choice.

Subtly rearranging our environment can nudge us into walking the path towards our desired goala healthy lifestyle. Making huge changes to our lifestyle can be hard and challenging. Failure to do so can often discourage us from continuing and we often end up giving up because we set out goals too high. The human body is composed of 60% water, and we expel a substantial amount every day. We lose it through urine, sweat, bowel movements, and even by simply breathing.

Most of us dont drink nearly enough to replace what we use; thats a mistake that can do a significant amount of damage. Why is it so important? Water helps our bodies carry out essential functions, like removing waste and spreading nutrients and oxygen through our system.

Campus recreational facilities look to keep students healthy, both in person and virtually – OSU – The Lantern

As students return to class, its not only Ohio States academic department that is trying to create a sense of normalcy for students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ohio States Department of Recreational Sports has been working to create safe and viable options for students to maintain a healthy lifestyle that can easily be incorporated into busy schedules in places such as the RPAC and the Jesse Owens South Recreation Center for students to exercise, as well as online virtual options.

I think now more than ever its important to keep that positive energy and nothing correlates more to good stimulation, good mental health. Anybody that struggles with depression, anxiety any kind of movement or exercise could help reduce the risk of those symptoms, Stephanne Musser, the assistant director of Fitness and Program services, said.

Recognizing the value exercise plays both in physical and mental health, Musser said the departments focus has been on creating options that accommodate everyone.

On Monday, the RPAC extended its hours from 5:30 a.m. to midnight after having limited hours throughout the summer, Marci Shumaker, senior director of programs and administration in the Department of Recreational Sports, said.

JO South opened their doors Monday for the first time this summer as well and is now open noon to midnight on weekdays, noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Following the first week, the hours will be extended from 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays, according to the Office of Student Lifes recreational website.

The Outdoor Adventure Center opened on Monday as well, and is open Monday through Thursday from 2-11 p.m., Friday from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

While there are plans to open the North Recreation Center, Shumaker said it will probably be another week before it welcomes students.

There are capacity limits at each recreation center location. The RPACs capacity is well over 1,000 people and has yet to be reached since being opened, Shumaker said. The department has focused on repurposing locations to maximize space and allow for proper social distancing, creating a safe environment for individuals to work out in.

Previous weightlifting areas within the RPAC have been converted to cardio areas to allow for proper social distancing, Shumaker said. Some areas in the facilities are by reservation only. The lap pool and rock-climbing wall both require prior reservations. If individuals wish to make a reservation, theycan visit the departments webpage.

Reservations can also be made online to register for personal training. Currently, the restrictions allow only 10 people to gather at a time. While there are no exceptions for fitness classes, it is possible for one-on-one personal training to take place, Musser said.

You just have to abide by all the safety guidelines that the RPAC is currently using, so you have to wear a mask during the workout unless youre doing very strenuous cardio. But its available, which is really, really exciting because you can social distance and you can wear a mask, Musser said.

For those who arent comfortable with in-person training or workouts, there are online personal training programs and live fitness classes that are free and accessible to students.

The live online classes will be taught by the RPACs student personal trainers with over 50 options, ranging from yoga to weightlifting, Musser said. The live classes will immediately be archived and available for later use.

So, if you take a class, and youre like, Oh my God, I loved that, that will be available for you for almost 300 days. Itll be posted online, and youll be able to take that class as many times as you like, Musser said.

In addition to live online classes, the department has also pre-posted various workout videos to YouTube, including 20-minute fitness challenges and 10-minute yoga flows.

The department also recognizes the loss of intramural sports such as basketball and volleyball and has created a free, online intramural league for students to join, Shumaker said. Students can sign up for the leagues via the departments website.

We partnered with the esports arena, so we are offering virtual intramural sports for social gatherings so you can still get an intramural championship, Shumaker said.

The virtual intramural sports leagues are made up of but not limited to sports games such as Madden and NBA2K, and they also have trivia leagues, Shumaker said.

The direct fee for a rec sports membership was not applied to the statement of account for students that are only taking online classes. However, it is available to purchase online or in person at the RPAC for the student rate of $123.00 for the semester.

Research has connected physical activity with a wide range of positive effects for us physically, mentally and emotionally. It also appears to reduce the risk of many health problems and helps to counter some of the aging process. That being said, it would seem as if there are only positive outcomes related to physical activity. For some individuals, however, that is not the case.

Is there a difference between the terms "physical activity" and "exercise"? "Physical activity" can be considered a more general term and be interpreted as any physical movement. "Exercise" might be better described as more formal or purposeful movement. For example, cleaning the house would fall under physical activity, while going to the gym to workout might be described as both physical activity and exercise.

As with eating, physical activity/exercise can become a negative when it no longer contributes positively to our health and quality of life. When exercise is done for other than pleasure, for some individuals it can begin to slip toward the negative. It may be helpful to ask yourself the question, "Why am I exercising?".

There is movement with a purpose such as yard work, chopping wood, house chores, walking the dog, etc. that might be part of lifes normal activities. Some physical activities help us to connect to our self, to others, to the outdoor environment, or can give us a needed mental break in the day. These are all part of a healthy lifestyle.

Are you exercising because you feel you should or because you want to? Do you feel guilty if you are not able to exercise daily? Does this cause your anxiety to increase? Is your pattern of exercise rigid so that you regularly give up time with family, friends, or social events in order to fit in your exercise? Do thoughts about your exercise plan take up a high percentage of your day and has it become one of your top priorities?

Do you have strict self-imposed exercise rules that you find difficult to change? Do you struggle with keeping your daily goals for exercise flexible? Are your self-esteem or sense of value impacted by how well you achieve your exercise goals? Do you tend to compete with yourself or others by continually increasing the demands you place on your body, such as the intensity, frequency, and/or duration of exercise? Instead of being a stress-buster, has exercise increased your stress? Does exercise cause a feeling of inadequacy (never good enough)?

Do you listen to your body as to when you should reasonably stop exercising due to fatigue or symptoms of overuse, or do you push though the full workout you have planned no matter what? If you have been unable to exercise for a period of time, do you start where you left off or do you begin at a lower level of exercise and then gradually increase back to your previous exercise level? Do you take care of your body by including both a warm-up and cool-down period each time you exercise? Are you attentive to fueling and hydrating your body appropriately before, during, and after the activity as appropriate?

Do you continue to exercise despite illness, pain, injury, fatigue, inadequate sleep, or tight time constraints? Are you unwilling to take at least one day off per week to allow your body to recover? Do you tend to ignore the fact that physical activities outside of your formal workout plan also count towards daily physical activity recommendations?

Are you using exercise as a reward, punishment, or compensation for less appropriate eating? If exercise did not change the appearance of your body, would you still do it? Do you restrict food intake on days when you are less active or do you instead provide the calories and nutrients needed for recovery?

When an unavoidable obstacle prevents you from exercising one day, does part of you feel relief? If you are truly honest with yourself, do you dread your workouts? As you anticipate a workout, how would you respond to the question, "Do I feel like moving right now?" Does the exercise that you do make you hate your body or appreciate what it can do?

A more positive approach to physical activity might be to create a plan that allows for flexibility and diversity of activities. This means it allows you to change the frequency, duration, intensity, what you choose to do, and the timing of your exercise. It lets you skip or lessen a formal workout on days where you are doing more exertive activities of daily life. Consider setting reasonable goals that let you make adjustments as needed based on how your body is feeling. Be self-compassionate and treat yourself well.

Try for mostly pleasurable activities or pair the less desirable ones with activities you do enjoy like exercising while listening to audiotapes or music you like, exercising while socializing with someone else, etc. Exercise for your own reasons with a target of better health, overall fitness, pleasure, and based on what is reasonable for you. Be purposeful about adequate sleep, time for recovery, sufficient fluid intake, and food intake to cover fueling and nutrient needs.

As you move your body, appreciate what it can do for you. Be physically active outdoors when possible to boost mood and as a chance to take more notice of the natural world around you. This can reduce the time spent in self-focus and allow you to feel part of the bigger life picture.

So in general, moving our bodies has the potential to contribute positively to our health and quality of life. Consider honestly reflecting on the questions above. What is your relationship with exercise? Is there anything you would like to change?

School is starting. Two weeks till I move in. I need to buy dorm room decorations. Where are my classes? Where are my friends?

These were all the thoughts that were racing through many students heads about one year ago. Those thoughts quickly changed within a year. A return to home in March marked the beginning of quarantine. People found ways to cope through the chaos in order to reduce coronavirus transmission. There was a glimmer of hope that fall 2020 would be a start to normality once again, but that hope quickly diminished. As of August 6, Case Western Reserve University announced that a large portion of students will not be able to return to live on campus.

That news brought dismay to many students. The college life many dreamt of will be completely different for the indefinite future. As this fast-paced change occurred, everyone had to undergo an immense readjustment in their lives. The college scene we once knew has now morphed into a world of isolation.

College students already have to balance the stress of attending college. From rigorous coursework to maintaining a social life, there is great pressure externally to fulfill all expectations. And now these fears and anxieties are compounded due to additional safety and health measures. A single room has now turned into a virtual classroom, a dining hall, a social gathering spot and a bedroom. Abrupt transitions and the uncertainty of the future is causing great stress for students, leading to a greater vulnerability for mental health issues.

As the new school year begins, the battle against mental illness will grow exponentially. The stressors will become endless. Between class, homework, exams, professors, friends and family, where is the time for self-development?

As young intellectual individuals, it is up to ourselves to realize there is always room for change and endless opportunities to better mental health, regardless of this unexpected situation.

Numerous schools around the nation, including our own CWRU, have given students access to virtual counseling and psychological services. Colleges believe emotional reactions during this time of crisis can vary from person to person. Whether one feels scared, anxious, grateful, hopeful or angry, it is all valid. Rather than avoid or ignore unpleasant emotions, they encourage students to pause and tune in to what they are feeling.

Are these resources enough? The definite answer is no. Over 45% of people aged 18-24 years experienced symptoms of trauma- or stress-related disorders due to the pandemic as of June 2020. Mental health problems, even with greater accessibility to resources remotely, are soaring and negatively impacting many.

We must each take the initiative to help ourselves. We need to allow our minds to be compassionate towards ourselves so we can realize that it is okay, not to be okay. This type of attitude will also encourage a positive mindset. Moreover, it is essential to take care of the body. Maintaining good eating, sleeping and exercising habits will contribute to a healthy lifestyle full of energy.

These are not the only measures we can take: for centuries, meditation has been shown to decrease stress and relinquish chaos that can coincide with mental well-being. During meditation, all that is needed is to focus; eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding the mind. This process results in enhanced physical and emotional well-being. From gaining self-awareness to managing healthy stress levels, the benefits are endless.

Although meditation is not for everyone, that does not mean all hope is lost. There are so many other options that can be tailored to each individual. It is all a matter of trying to better oneself and asking for help when needed. During this unprecedented time especially, doing all you can to take care of your mental health is crucial.

Lets all be there for each other and create a healthy environment for ourselves and our fellow peers at CWRU.

Lets admit it: Summer 2020 has been awful. (Thanks, COVID-19.) But some in Bloomington-Normal have managed to find bright spots in an otherwise dark summer. These are WGLTs Best Things Of The Worst Summer.

Eating healthy and working out is hard enough, and when you add a global pandemic to the mix, it can feel almost impossible. However, one Bloomington man managed to make the best out of a bad situation and used the extra time to continue achieving his fitness goals.

Edwin Lamb started his fitness journey in 2018 after a health scare on a work trip. As a man in his early 30s, it was a wake-up call that inspired him to alter his lifestyle.

As you get into your 30s you kind of realize that, 'Hey Im not getting any younger,' you start looking at the long view, said Lamb. I want to be able to be active in my 40s, 50s, and 60s, maybe even longer.

By the time the quarantine hit, he had lost 20 pounds, but the new normal didnt make it easy for him to stay motivated and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

It was more mentally challenging than I thought it was going to be, said Lamb. There were times where you don't want to do anything and just watch Netflix during the quarantine; its also a lot easier to snack when youre at home.

Lamb said developing a routine is key when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle change, and adapting to the new normal was difficult.

The routine was I went to work, came home, and immediately went to the gym, said Lamb. Working from home you dont have that break. Youre already home, which makes it so easy to not put on a workout video or go out for that three-mile run.

Despite the challenges, Lamb managed to keep the weight off and continued to progress, losing an extra five pounds.

There are definitely days where mentally you are just done, but I just really wanted to see how far I could push my body, said Lamb. Theres definitely times you have to remind yourself that youre not doing this not just for 10 weeks, but this is the start of a lifelong thing.

The favorite part of his health journey was learning about how to properly fuel his body and make smart food decisions through his class at Farrells gym in Bloomington.

They just teach you to make better food decisions, to really cut out sugar and put good food in your body, said Lamb.

Asked what he would tell others who want to pursue a healthier lifestyle, Lamb wants to remind people that no ones journey is the same, and thats OK.

If you dont think you can do it, you really can. Dont worry about what other people are doing or what they look like. Everyones body types are different, said Lamb. Dont be intimidated or let others intimidate you. Its about your health. You can do it all in baby steps. You dont need to take it all on at once.

COVID isolation, anxiety ‘really reinforce’ eating disorders – Northwest Georgia News

The COVID-19 pandemic has proved a perfect storm for eating disorders, experts say.

Lockdowns to limit the spread of infection have made Americans more isolated from one another while increasing their anxiety. Psychologists say the emotional impact of that has driven many people into binge eating and weight gain, while for some it has provoked the serious mental health conditions of bulimia and anorexia nervosa.

At least 30 million Americans suffer from some type of eating disorder, and the problem is not limited to any demographic category, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders.

People with anorexia nervosa avoid food or restrict their eating so thoroughly that they get very little nutrition. They can become dangerously underweight. With bulimia nervosa, people often eat large amounts of food, then follow it up with forced vomiting, excessive use of diuretics, fasting, laxatives and even excessive exercise.

Eating disorders vary, and its not always obvious to others that a person is suffering from such a condition. Its one of the tricky things in the eating disorder world that weight does not necessarily indicate health and wellness, says clinical psychologist Laura McLain, director of the Renfrew Center of Atlanta, which specializes in the treatment of eating disorders.

When we think about eating disorders patients typically thrive in their illness often by secrecy, isolation, disconnection from others. The pandemic really reinforces these unhealthy coping skills, McLain says.

We know that people are struggling, she says. But theres still hope people can receive support.

She says many patients are now getting virtual therapy, which means they dont have to deal with the stress of driving to an appointment or entering an unfamiliar building.

In March and April, the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) saw a 78 percent increase in messages sent to its helpline compared with the same period last year.

A spokeswoman for NEDA, Chelsea Kronengold, says social distancing and being quarantined is extra challenging for folks with eating disorders for many reasons.

She refers to a survey of about 1,000 individuals in the United States and the Netherlands. It confirmed challenges such as a lack of structure in daily life, spending more time in a triggering environment, and trouble finding privacy for teletherapy and other forms of virtual support, Kronengold says.

Stockpiling of food at home because of lockdowns can be a temptation to overeating for the average individual. But some people with eating disorders may actually avoid keeping the necessary food stocks on hand, experts say.

Our patients tend to socially isolate anyway. They have social anxiety. Many times theyre depressed, says Nancy Zucker, who directs the Duke Center for Eating Disorders in Durham, N.C.

The very real worry about contracting the coronavirus can serve as a crutch to further isolate and restrict food, Zucker says in a Duke Health article. Self-deception is such a dangerous thing on the best of days. It would be so easy to talk oneself into the fact that, No, its safer for me to stay inside and not go out and get food.

For that reason, its important to push for specifics about how people are living, Zucker says. If patients say they have enough food at home, Zucker and her colleagues will ask for details about whats in the refrigerator and on their cupboard shelves.

As noted in the U.S.-Dutch survey, some sort of structure in ones life is important to patients. When someone is recovering, one of the things that protects them are schedules and routines, filling the space, and kind of suffocating out the eating disorder, Zucker says.

Dr. John Morton, medical director of bariatric surgery for Yale New Haven Health System, says hes seeing patients via telehealth who have gained up to 30 pounds recently. He says it can happen within months.

But theres more to weight gain than is reflected in the mirror. The CDC says severe obesity increases the risk of a dangerous breathing problem called acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which can be a serious complication of COVID-19.

And people with severe obesity are more likely to have other chronic diseases and health conditions that can increase the severity of COVID-19 itself. Gaining weight and becoming an obesity statistic is never a good option, experts say.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle should be of concern to everyone, and most people can manage their weight with the proper measures. Eating disorders, however, are not a lifestyle choice, the National Institutes of Health says. They are biologically influenced illnesses.

Treatment plans for eating disorders include psychotherapy, medical care and monitoring, nutritional counseling, medication or a combination of these approaches. Goals include restoring adequate nutrition, bringing weight to a healthy level, reducing excessive exercise, and stopping binge-purge and binge-eating behaviors.

Patients struggling with a relapse during the current pandemic can build action plans for times of unusual stress. There should always be a friend to call or a therapist to consult with. Having a daily routine to follow is also helpful, many experts on eating disorders say.

If theres a silver lining in this pandemic, its the fact that there are more virtual treatment and support options available now, which is great for people who were previously unable to access in-person treatment, says Kronengold.

We know isolation is already an issue in individuals with eating disorders, says McLain.

An increase in stress and anxiety prompts some type of eating disorder behavior, whether it be restricting, binging, purging, anything that might come up as an eating disorder may resurface, says McLain.

Oftentimes, our patients are in survival mode. They are likely to avoid going certain places, or avoid eating around certain people, and choose to miss social situations as much as possible, she says.

The truth is, we are not really built to deal with a pandemic in general, coupled with somebody that might already have this level of anxiety and depression. Plus an eating disorder thats been diagnosed or even not diagnosed, states McLain.

It just makes everything that much more distressing or overwhelming.

Former Washington Wide Receiver Josh Morgan Donates a Kidney to His Brother – NBC4 Washington

Former Washington wide receiver Josh Morgan proved that he would do anything for family.

After suffering from kidney disease, Morgan's brother Daniel was in need of a kidney transplant in March in the middle of a global pandemic.

While the number of major surgeries have dropped significantly in the months since the pandemic began and few people wanted to be near hospitals if they didn't have to, Josh knew he wanted to be a match for his little brother.

He watched his brother suffer from the disease for years, requiring dialysis three times a week for four hours each.

"It's one of those situations, as a big brother, when you're always the protector," Josh said. "You're like: God, just give me the pain. Don't make him go through it.' It was like he was deteriorating. All of his energy was just gone. It was like watching him grow into an old man overnight."

While their father Dennis was a health match, the doctors wanted someone younger, so Josh stepped up.

"People thought I was crazy, but I just always considered myself the sacrificial lambfor my family," said Josh, who has a 6-year-old son, Josh Jr. "He needed that kidney. And if my son ever needed a kidney, too, then he's going to have mine and you're just going to put me to sleep. That was just always my mentalityIt was scary for me because I couldn't imagine life without my brother."

On March 26, Daniel woke up from surgery with a new kidney feeling better than ever. Now, he has three kidneys because the procedure attaches a healthy one without removing the non-functioning ones.

After playing two seasons with Washington and six years in the league, Josh became an entrepreneur, started his own business and has done some acting, coaching and mentoring as well. While Josh is down to one kidney, he will be able to live a normal, healthy lifestyle with his brother by his side.

But for most of us, this bodily response is unnecessary. And, when stress is chronic, occurring over a long period of time, these effects can be toxic and dangerous to our health. The amount of stress that you have, and your stress resiliency, can even predict how long you will live.

One of the most worrying effects of stress on our health is its relationship to disease; research shows that chronic, severe stress vastly increases a persons risk for several chronic health conditions.

For example, theres significant evidence that stress increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and hypertension as well as diabetes and certain types of cancer (2, 3, 4). Stress is also clearly associated with mental illness, including depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety (5, 6).

Studies have shown that stress clearly reduces immune function and can cause a person to be more susceptible to illnesses like colds. Scientists have suggested that stress can affect immune system function at the cellular level, changing the bodys chemical immune response.
