Incentives work to keep people healthy, and are cheaper than treatment – The Straits Times

SINGAPORE - The government, and insurance companies that pay the hospital bills, are trying every which way to keep people here healthier.

Life expectancy in Singapore is one of the longest in the world, and the people here enjoy the most number of healthy years in the world at 73.9 years in 2019 - beating the Japanese who were second with 73.3 years of good health.

This is largely due to three main factors - a strong healthcare system to provide good medical care to all who need it, in a timely manner; robust immunisation programme to protect against many preventable diseases; and people following a healthy lifestyle that reduces their risk of serious illness.

Singapore has an accessible and affordable public health network, with heavy government subsidies that ensure no citizen is denied healthcare for the lack of money.

The national immunisation schedule here recommends that all children be protected against 10 diseases, with some like diphtheria and measles being compulsory. Most are free.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has also introduced, just this month, subsidies for adult immunisation. This will hopefully reduce the number of people getting serious illnesses like meningitis and pneumonia.

But the third factor has to come from people themselves. They need to exercise regularly and avoid eating unhealthy food, or at least, not eat them too frequently.

Most are aware that regular exercise is extremely helpful in keeping them in good health. They know it reduces obesity, the risk of heart diseases and diabetes, medical conditions which result in significant insurance claims.

Mr Dennis Tan, who heads Prudential Singapore, which provides MediShield Life Integrated Plans to many people here, said the top three causes of claims are heart problems, stroke and kidney treatments. In Singapore, the majority of kidney failure is due to uncontrolled diabetes.

Regular exercise could reduce the risk for all three. But not everyone who knows that, actually makes the effort to exercise.

The Health Promotion Board (HPB) has over the years stressed the importance of exercise. The Board's National Steps Challenge, has seen the number of participants grow, from 156,000 in 2015 when it was launched to 913,000 in the fifth session that ended earlier this year.

The Board dangles incentives for those who sign up. They include a free steps tracker for those who do not have one as well as prizes like air tickets for teams and individuals. There are also vouchers for those who fulfil the required number of daily steps.

Mr Zee Yoong Kang, HPB's chief executive officer, sees nothing wrong in giving people incentives to exercise.

But he added: "I don't think people do it for money. I think it's the thrill of getting that voucher as a recognition."

That's because "to earn $35 in our steps challenge programme, you have to walk 960 kilometres, and that's all the way from Singapore to Thailand," he said.

The annual event involves a series of challenges with participants securing a $5 or $10 voucher for clearing a level.

While some people do manage to earn every single voucher offered, there are also others who do not claim them after clearing a level.

About a third of participants would claim the vouchers within a month of qualifying for them, while 7 per cent do not bother at all.

Anything that can get more people exercising regularly is good. While about half a million participants may not care much about the vouchers, there are about 300,000 people who had likely exercised more to get them.

It is far cheaper to provide a little incentive for people to stay healthy, than to treat them for a medical condition that could have been prevented.

Professor Tan Chorh Chuan executive director of the MOH Office for Healthcare Transformation said the rewards can be seen "as encouragement, support, to assist people in making the behavioural change".

Such encouragement is important, which is why Prudential introduced its Pulse App this year. It already has 120,000 users.

The App allows people to check their health status as well as access a tele-consultation should they think they have a problem. It was launched during the circuit breaker period, when most people stayed home as far as possible.

There are also fun elements in the App, like a wrinkle-mirror, to encourage people to lead healthy lifestyles.

For health insurers like Prudential, spending money to get people to stay fit would mean healthier policy holders, which is good for the bottom line.

Prof Tan said more than a third of serious illness are actually preventable. This means, if we all do our part, we should be able to enjoy even more years in good health in our increasingly long lifetimes.

Tell us about your journey with food. When did you fall in love with food, cooking and eating clean?

When I started cooking, I just loved knowing exactly what I was putting in my food, good or bad, understanding how flavours come together, how texture is created and eventually how that food becomes information for your body. Telling it how to feel (tired, bloated, energised, inspired) and how to perform.

How can food affect our disposition?

I hear food is fuel all the time and while thats true, it doesnt paint the whole picture. Yes, food gives us energy, but it also gives us information. It tells your body what to feel, how to move and eventually can affect it positively or negatively in the long run. Think about it, its the most intimate thing you can do, to put something in your body and ingest it, it doesnt get more personal than that.

How important is food vs exercise in the equation for being fit and healthy?

People say that abs are made in the kitchen and that is 100 per cent true. If abs are your goal, food is the most important thing. However, if you want to lead a balanced life, which is what I usually advocate, they are more or less equal. I think its important to do something physical every day, it can be a 30-minute walk, but it's also important to eat the things that will make you feel good and wont contribute to any diseases further down the line.

Why in your opinion is exercise important for mental health?

Its all about momentum. We all feel stuck sometimes and all it takes is for you to get up and start somethinganythingto start bringing movement back in your life. This can be starting a project, reading a book that inspires you, reaching out to a friend. There are so many ways to create movement in your life and the easiest one is to actually physically move. I usually get my best ideas or become motivated when Im working out and a lot of people Ive talked to, feel the same way. That connection [between] brain and physical activity is so important for our mental wellbeing.

How do you balance eating rich/ decadent meals and keeping a healthy food diet?

I like the 80/20 rule for maintenance. 80 per cent of the time, choose your food based on your healthy, 20 per cent choose your food based on your cravings. Unless you have military discipline, the more you stop yourself from eating things you crave, the more that will build up and implode, so its good to give yourself a break from time to time.

Take us through your fitness/wellness journey: did you ever have any difficulties?

I had a lot of struggles in the beginning. I needed to figure out what works and for that to happen I had to try it all in long periods of time, to be able to measure the effectiveness of an eating or workout plan. There was a lot of frustration and I broke a few times. I realised that each time I broke, I basically had to start from zero. As I failed, I learned to understand my body and my mind more. Ultimately that helped me figure out a couple of things:

If people are busy, what tips can you give them so that they can still find a way to meal-prep and eat well?

Eat simple. We are so obsessed with food nowadaysNetflix shows, restaurants at our fingertips on our devices, documentaries, travel, etc. All these things have not only solidified the importance of food in our lives but changes our perspective of it. We crave for beautifully presented dishes or meals that taste decadent. Our expectation of what a meal should look like is sometimes way too high. I cant imagine our parents or grandparents having this same obsession. They grew up with simple food cooked at home with minimal ingredients. When I make my meals at home thats what I do. Chicken breast, a sweet potato, some broccoli and brown rice; cooked with salt, pepper and olive oil. Its not the tastiest, most amazing dish, but its enough. I think we need to make peace with that.

What pre and post-workout meals do you like and what do you recommend to others?

I actually enjoy working out with just coffee and water in my system, especially before doing weights, it makes me feel light. When I used to do long cardio sessions when I was seriously into triathlons, I would grab a peanut butter and banana sandwich. For my post-workout, whatever fruit is In season, blended with some coconut water and some protein powder if available.

What pre and post-workout meals do you like and what do you recommend to others?

I love Saba bananas cooked down with just some coconut water and a pandan leaf.

This message from the South African pharmaceutical company forms part of their Movember efforts to get men off the couch and moving.

According to company spokesperson Nicole Jennings, almost a third of men do not include exercise into their daily routine.

The typical modern lifestyle that many men lead, which involves spending eight hours in front of a computer, another two to three hours in traffic and a few more hours in front of the television, is proving fatal.

Life expectancy drops significantly, and some researchers have even claimed it being worse than smoking and other risk factors combined, said Jennings.

According to a study conducted by cardiologists at the Cleveland Clinic (USA), among more than 122 000 participants, doctors found that the risk of death rose substantially among those that led a sedentary lifestyle compared to regular exercisers, whose mortality risk dropped to 80%.

A number of studies have shown that exercise improves the muscle strength, balance, cardio fitness, metabolism, glucose tolerance and psychological health of the elderly, even those in their 80s.

Active men have lower rates of prostate cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease and stroke, and are less likely to experience high blood pressure, depression and erection problems.

Modern-day living has seen exercise being eliminated from routines, but the body is designed for physical activity and cannot function optimally without it.

An hour of daily moderate exercise wipes out the negative impacts of sedentary living.Its best to combine a variety of cardiovascular exercises, such as brisk walking, running or cycling with strength-training using either weights or your own body weight, said Jennings.

Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer combined affects hundreds of thousands of men in the country and remain among the most expensive diseases to treat.

So instead of paying large sums to treat these diseases, simply implement a healthy lifestyle.

Considering the overwhelming clinical evidence, exercise should be prescribed by doctors as a rule of thumb to reduce the risk of developing these illnesses.

What We’re Thankful For Now – The Beet

Even in this extremely challenging time that we live in, I feel that there is so much to bethankful for in my life. First of all, I am thankful for you, our community, for finding and reading The Beetand helping us grow. One year ago, we had just turned on the lights (in mid-October, 2019) to welcome readers to a new content hub dedicated to helping you eat more plant-based food as a way of achieving better health. It quickly became clear that this is so much more than a dietary choice; It's a lifestyle and an approach that manyconsumers the world over are embracing in record numbers.

Since we didn'thold a launch party or make afuss about The Beet's"soft launch" (other than an IG post and a sip ofchampagne over our laptops) we hoped that the concept of a site, app, and newsletter (for starters) dedicatedto the idea that there is a growing audience of people who want to eat more plant-based foods would take off. In January we made a little more noise, with a press announcement that The Beet had launched with a 28-day plant-based challenge for the New Year, New You time frame. It took off, and so did The Beet, thanks to you.

The idea that first you "JustAddPlants" and then perhaps you may choose to lean into plant-based eating, or go mostly plant-based or fully plant-based, was a sound notion. Back then, 12 months ago for our first Thanksgiving,The Beet had about as many readers aswe had friends and family, who lovingly checked out this new content hub (okay we told them to). Now The Beet has grown exponentially, to serving more than 1.7 millionmonthly readers who enjoy about 12 million page views in all, as more Americans are turning to plant-based eating as a way to be healthier amidst a global pandemic.

I am exceedingly thankful for the team at The Beet, a small group of dedicated editorsStephanie McClain, Hailey Welch, Caitlin Mucerinoand tech creatorsSun Sachs, Anibal Rosado, plant-based health experts (our contributing doctors and nutritionists), and driven business minds (Jared Willig),plus a few brilliant growth architects, who have helped us get here. And I appreciate our industrious interns, Cameron Alvar and Spencer Whaley, who made our lives so much better. As we have gained momentum through the past months, we threw the machine into fast forward, and there doesn't seem to be a limit to what this team can do. I am grateful for each of the editors, who show up every morning (in their own homes, with their adorable pets as co-pilots) to striveto bring you the meaningful, unique, and engaging content that will help you eat healthily and love it, and get further on your plant-based journey and achieve your personal goal of being healthier every day.

On a personal note, I am grateful for my husband James Danziger, who entered this plant-based world with me and calls himself "vegan-ish" and planned fun, plant-based mealsforthe family over the summer by launching "vegan taco night" where we would taste a variety of plant-based meatless fillings. I am gratefultomy kids, now grown-ups, who are always supportive of every new adventure their mom embarks on, including switching out all the milk and cheese and eggs in the fridge. They now buy JUST Eggs to have in their own fridges (as do their friends).

I'd be remiss if I didn't say a big thank you to the visionary founders (Steven Price and Adam Slutsky) and thetalented, creative minds at 25madison and Gather Ventures in New York City, who believed in the power of a plant-basedcompanyas an important business to embark on, even before I ever walked in the door. They were right and I justgotthe fun part of bringing it to fruition. So in the spirit of "closer together, even apart" I want to send a virtual hug and high five to the team, the bosses, and the contributing writers who have created such stellar content. This yearhas made it so clear to me that the most important things in life are also some of the most simplehaving good health, having a roof over my head, having good company (even if it's just virtually), creating a routine that brings me joy, and having a job I love and feel purpose in. I came down with COVID in March, at the very beginning of the pandemic, and after making a complete recovery by May, I realized how much better Ishould be taking care of my health. I moved intoa newapartment with my rescue kitty Silky and began a new chapter in my life centered around well-being.

My gratitude sprouted from simple health-driven routines: Being able to take a walk around the park in the morning and appreciate the changing foliage, practicing yoga and meditation daily, going to my local farmer's marketand getting a tote filled with fresh, local produce, and most of all, being able to work for a company that gives me purpose by helping others. The positive response to The Beet has been overwhelming and working toassist others in achieving better health through a plant-based diet is unmatched. I hope that all of our readers realize how much joy it brings each of us on the editorial team to spread the joy of a plant-based diet in an effort to move towards a healthier, happier, greener, more compassionate world for all.

In the current circumstances, Ive experienced that the normal things we take for granted deserve a fresh look and I feel so fortunate that I am healthy, my family and friends are in good health, I have a roof over my head, and a wonderful job.

Along the lines of health, I am thankful that I can lead a rich, varied, healthy lifestyle.I feel fortunate to work for The Beet and live and learn in a wholesome way from my studies and content production as a writer.

Americas toughest year? 3 in 4 say 2020 pushed the country into an existential crisis – Study Finds

NEW YORK From the pandemic to the presidential election, theres no question 2020 has been a turning point moment in United States history. Unfortunately, most believe the years problems havent left them in a good position moving forward. A new survey finds nearly eight in 10 Americans say 2020 caused an existential crisis for the country.

The OnePoll survey asked 2,000 Americans about their experiences throughout this tumultuous year and finds that 77 percent agree 2020 has sent the U.S. into crisis over its identity. Baby boomers are the most likely to agree with this statement (82%), compared to 76 percent of Generation X and 75 percent of millennial respondents.As America deals with its major issues, its no surprise that 65 percent of respondents feel like theyve had their own personal crisis at some point during 2020. The survey, commissioned by Vejo, finds 68 percent of Americans said the year has left them feeling defeated.

The top event leaving 63 percent of respondents feeling defeated entering 2021 is, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. Not being able to enjoy pre-COVID activities (45%) followed far between the virus. Another 45 percent of respondents cited the presidential election and 35 percent said the spread of misinformation relating to coronavirus is their top cause of exhaustion in 2020. Another three in 10 respondents add the 24/7 news cycle has taken a toll on them this year.

With all of these events adding up, over half of respondents have felt too overwhelmed throughout the year to take proper care of their health and wellness. Fifty-six percent said theyve been struggling now more than ever to find a wellness routine that works for them.

Nearly six in 10 people (57%) say they do want to learn more about how to improve their health and learn more about their bodys nutritional needs, but they dont know where to start. A further 64 percent confess its sometimes inconvenient for them to follow a healthy lifestyle and 55 percent say they just dont have enough time in the day.

Sixty-two percent of respondents also shared they struggle to find the motivation to try a new routine. Once they do find the motivation, however, 57 percent reveal they cant seem to follow through with these new routines in the long run.

Incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine is essential for a healthy lifestyle, says Dr. Jan Vonhoegen, M.D., Medical Director for VEJO+ Global, in a statement. Physical activity, a diet of whole fruits and vegetables, and a good nights sleep are the foundation of holistic health and happiness.

Half of the respondents said the most difficult aspects of a healthy lifestyle for them are eating a well-balanced diet and exercising regularly. Another four in 10 Americans shared they struggle to get all the necessary nutrients in their diets each day.

Starting new habits can be as easy as simplifying your existing nutritional routine, but its important to remember that it takes 21 days to create new habits and 90 days to create a lasting change in lifestyle, Dr. Vonhoegen adds.

'Tis the season for presents, baking and stress.

"There are presents to buy, there are certain deadlines if you are mailing them you need to time that out. There's pressure that we probably put on ourselves to get the perfect gift," said Denise Lash, Ph.D, Director of Behavioral Therapy, Intermountain Healthcare Mental Health integration.

This year's holiday stress could look a little different because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The holidays are a great time for tradition and getting together, so people now have to think its out is it worth the risk? Is it worth the risk for some family members who we think are healthy or not," said Lash. "People have a lot of decisions to make about what they are comfortable or not comfortable doing this year."

One way to manage your stress and mental health is to create a loose schedule.

"When we have open time and we are not necessarily doing so well the mind tends to fixate on what might not be going well or our worries," said Lash.

You can also write a gratitude journal.

"Before going to bed each night for two weeks, you write down three things you are grateful for. Now, one of the keys here is that you do want it to be different from day to day if you can. I could write down every day that I am grateful for my family, for my dog and while that may be true doing that for two out of three days for the fourteen is not going to have as powerful of an outcome. It's much better if one day I say, 'I am grateful my family is understanding and I am grateful my friend sent me a text and we could connect, I am grateful I got a good night of sleep,' and then the next day it is a different set of things," said Lash.

Make sure you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle and are going outside regularly. Also, avoid social media if possible.

'If they notice themselves doing a lot of social comparison on social media, my recommendation is give yourself a holiday gift and get off of it for a day or two see how you feel," said Lash.

Social isolation can have a huge effect on mental and physical health. It is important to stay connected to friends and loved ones. That can be a simple phone call, shoveling snow for a neighbor or sending flowers to a friend. This holiday season , if you can't be with your family because of the coronavirus, create new traditions.

"I have talked to many grandparents who are so sad about not having regular time with their grandkids that they used to have and love. One way to help with that is children love to receive mail, so if you are a grandparent you could send regular or just once and a while notes. You could color a picture of a Christmas tree or a menorah and send that in the mail. It will make their day. You could also read a book, a holiday book or your favorite book to your grandchildren over zoom or send it over Marco Polo. You can keep some traditions live that way," said Lash.

Remember to look at the big picture and know that this is only one holiday season. Even traditions can handle having a year off.

"This is one holiday season out of a lifetime. If you have an average lifespan of 70 or so years perhaps having one that is not with all the traditions is not such a big deal in the grand scheme of everything. I think keeping the big picture idea of that will be helpful," said Lash. "This is a time of flexibility and tolerance."

These days, it seems like we hear the word self-care just about every day. Usually, its accompanied by advice on how to slice the perfect cucumber rounds for an at-home facial or make your own bubble bath for a healing soak in the tub. Dont get us wrong, these are amazing tools to have in your self-care toolkit and you should employ them as often as possible but theres more to the story when it comes to self-care. From making changes to your diet to cutting out toxic relationships, were here to help you take self-care beyond the face mask.

Lets start with the basics. What is self-care, exactly? According to the International Self-Care Foundation (yes, that exists), self-care is defined as what people do for themselves to establish and maintain health, and to prevent and deal with illness. The organization goes on to define it as practices encompassing hygiene, nutrition lifestyle, environmental factors, socio-economic factors and self-medication. To put it simply, self-care is what you do for yourself to improve your physical and mental health.

Your diet should be a big part of your self-care routine. After all, its one of the primary things that affect the way you feel each and every day. To improve your diet and, in turn, your self-care, you need to formulate a custom diet that helps you feel as good as humanly possible. This means getting rid of foods that make you feel sick, bloated, tired, or guilty.

If you suffer from gastronomic discomfort or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you need to work on coming up with an IBS diet planthat helps you figure out whats triggering your issues. Many people find success with a low-FODMAP meal plan or elimination diets.

Cooking is one of the best ways to enhance self-care because it allows you to fully control what goes into your food, resulting in better health. It also leads to a boost in self-esteem. Set a goal for yourself to cook at home at least half the time to help minimize dining out, which sometimes leads to guilt and triggers stomach discomfort.

Lets not forget that cooking and dining can be a great stress management tool as well! Find ways to turn cooking into an activity of stress relief, whether it means hosting a dinner party or spending your Sunday baking something elaborate.

Finding healthy ways to handle stress throughout your daily life can drastically improve your self-esteem, relationships, and physical well-being. The goal should be to replace poor stress management tactics overeating, binge drinking, not getting out of bed for the entire weekend with more productive ones. All the while, remember to not be hard on yourself if youre not always successful!

By that, we mean you should have a little fun! There is simply no replacement for an afternoon of mindless enjoyment, whether it be with friends at brunch, the movies, the arcade, or playing a couple of hours of video games throughout the week. Simply spending time with friends at home is powerful enough to boost your self-esteem and make you feel happy.

This one is tough for a lot of people, but remember that you are entitled to your own space and time. If you need quiet time alone to recharge throughout the week, do not feel obligated to attend events or answer your phone! Healthy boundaries with family and friends can make you feel less zapped and overwhelmed, which means they are an essential part of your overall self-care strategy.

Who says playing games isnt good for your mental health? Playing sports, board games or video games is a proven way to release stress and feel happier. In fact, contrary to what many people think, there have even been some studies linking video gaming to positive mental health. The key, of course, is to play in moderation.

Try to remember that talking about your feelings and working out emotions is foundational to a good self-care routine, in part because it helps you release stress and experience feelings of support. Whether its chatting with friends or an online therapist, putting it all on the table is always a good thing.

Although it may sound shallow, the truth is that when you feel good about the way you look, you feel good about everything else in your life. Thats because looking good makes you feel empowered and leads to stronger feelings of self-confidence.

When it comes to self-care for the skin, face masks are just the tip of the iceberg. Try to think about how what you eat might be impacting your complexion. While the old adages about pizza grease and chocolate are probably true, there are some surprising foodstuffs (bread, popcorn, cupcakes, alcohol, spicy stuff) that may be causing breakouts.

In todays society, its so easy to get caught up in the massive (and massively expensive) world of cosmetic enhancements, but often, its the minor things that really go the furthest. Whitening your teeth, getting a fresh haircut, and wearing nice, clean clothes can make as big of an impact as Botox, veneers, or fillers!

Its important that you choose a style clothing, makeup, home dcor, etc.that accurately represents you and what youre all about. This will help you create a life where you feel comfortable and will even help satisfy your inner creativity. In other words, dont aim to be someone youre not, especially when it comes to your appearance!

If you really want to create a meaningful, positive impact on your self-care, youll need to look inward and focus on ways to enhance your lifestyle. Its not just about soaking in the tub or throwing on a face mask, though those things are great, too. Its also about looking at the bigger picture and creating a healthy lifestyle that sets you up for happiness and success!

A gray divorce may improve your health, but there are many factors to consider – PhillyVoice.com

Relationships. They are the fuel that powers a mans health and happiness. Studies have documented their benefits. Purpose, drive and positive behaviors all flow from their psychosocial dimensions.

Consequently, relationships have been a recurring theme in my discussion of 50-plus mens health how to foster them, strategies to expand them and techniques to maximize their value.With such a central role in a mans pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, it is astonishing to see a trend among older adults moving in the opposite direction.

A phenomenon that runs counterintuitive to all the positivity I just recited, but examined more closely, may be a graphic example of the desire for happiness at any age. Either way, so-called gray divorce is very much a major factor in the contemporary culture of mature adults.

According to The Pew Foundation,at a time when divorce is becoming less common for younger adults,gray divorce,is on the rise. Among U.S. adults ages 50 and older, the divorce rate has roughly doubled since the 1990s. For those 65 and older, the divorce rate has tripled during the same period.

Pew attributes the climbing rates, in part, to the aging baby boomers who have become unsatisfied and seek to pursue their own interests and independence for the remaining years of their lives.

A big factor behind this trend is longevity, says sociologistPepper Schwartz. She notes that half a century ago, an unhappy couple in their mid-60s might have stayed together because they thought it wasn't worth divorcing if they had only a few years left to live.

Now, 65-year-olds can easily envision at least 20 more active years and they don't want them to be loveless, or full of frustration or disappointment. Schwartz says boomers gave up on the concept of the dutiful-but-unhappy spouse a long time ago.

Positive relationships have benefits, but it is important to recognize that poor or stressful relationships, carry a downside. The National Center for Biotechnologycites sociological research showing that marital strain erodes physical health, and that the negative effect of marital strain on health becomes greater with advancing age.

NCBI reports that stress contributes to psychological distress and physiological reactions such as increased heart rate and blood pressure that can damage health through cumulative wear and tear on physiological systems. This can lead to unhealthy coping behaviors such as food consumption, heavy drinking and smoking.

In another report that presents the outcomes of gray divorce and some interesting gender differences, theNCBIindicates that roughly one-third of baby boomers are currently unmarried. Among adults 65 and older, a majority is unmarried.

That said, NCBI reports that more than 25% of older single men were in a dating relationship, compared with less than 10% of single older women. They attribute this to older men enjoying a larger pool of potential dating partners than women, reflecting gender differences in life expectancy and norms prescribing that men should date younger women. The researchers found that men tend to be more interested than women in formalizing these relationships through marriage.

So, what does this all mean? Does the trend of gray divorce represent a stamp of approval for those over 50 who are contemplating a split from their partner? The numbers certainly offer a sense of comfort that others are acting on their feelings. Or, is this just the last hurrah of a bunch of self-centered boomers who cant commit to the sacrifice required in a relationship?

Clearly, each situation is different, but here are some tips for both those evaluating their relationship and men who have made the decision to move on.

Dr. Anthony Rostain, my colleague at Cooper University Health Care and the chairman of the department of psychiatry, offers the following thoughts for those assessing their relationships.

Investment: Marriage (think relationships of some duration) needs to change as people age. Successful relationships require an investment. Have you made an investment?

Discontent: Identifying the sources of discontent is critical in determining your ability to salvage the relationship. Have you pinpointed these factors and tried to address them with your partner?

New Experiences: Have you tried new experiences that have the potential to rekindle the flames that originally brought you together?

For those 50-plus men who have decided to move on, experts offer this advice on some of the most important factors men need to keep in mind.

Consider the kids: Just because your kids may be grown and living outside the house doesnt mean they are not affected. The Good Man Project says that it is often the older children who have a more difficult time compared to their younger siblings. In their eyes, it may all just be "too weird." Talk to your children and consider their feelings.

Finances: According to theAmerican Academy of Actuaries, a mid- to later-life split can shatter retirement plans. Theres less time to recoup losses, pay off debt, and weather stock market gyrations. Also, you may be approaching the end of your peak earning years, so theres less of a chance of making up financial shortfalls with a steady salary.

Dating: AARP cites a 2009 U.S. statistical reportthat shows when it comes to finding a new 50-plus relationship, women increasingly outnumber men. For every 1,000 births, by age 50, women outnumber men 954 to 920. At 65, it's 871 to 791. So, the odds are in men's favor and women know it.

Among individuals of all ages, legal experts indicatethat women initiate 70% of the divorces, so men are often on the receiving end of the divorce decision. Regardless, it is never an easy process and takes on particular significance as we mature. Still, the data show its a choice that adults are making in record numbers.

My journey to gray divorce began with an interest in health behaviors of men over 50. From that perspective, if a divorce frees a man from stress and unhappiness, then it is probably good for his health. If divorce creates a gap in the companionship that motivates positive behaviors or triggers unhealthy practices, then it could negatively impact a mans health.

All in, with such a strong link between health and happiness, the impact of a divorce on your ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle is certainly worth due consideration.

The co-founder and lead guitarist of Queen, Brian Mayhas revealed the best way he knows to get through these crazy times emerged out of the global pandemic of COVID-19 while giving an update on his new healthy lifestyle.

As you might remember,Brian May suffered from a heart attack, and he was treated in the hospital for a while back in May 2020. When he got back home, May shared his pictures and videos letting his fans know that he was getting better and better every day.

The legendary guitarist, Brian May, has been pretty busy, working on his brand new Christmas collaboration with the Broadway star, Kerry Ellis, and signaling that hes on to something through his visits to the Apollo Theatre, formerly the Hammersmith Odeon, where Queen performed Bohemian Rapsody for the first time live.

Lately, May has taken Instagram with a video, focusing on the issue that how he manages to keep going against all the odds in 2020. The legend advised his fans who feel a bit aimless and flat, as can be with this seemingly endless battle with the pesky coronavirus, to try fitness.

Although this daily practice came late to his life, May admitted it drastically changed everything for him. Brian May explained that his state of health got better each day because of fitness which provides not only physical benefit but also mental wellness.

COVID-19 survivors at risk of new health issues – Persons overmedicating to ward off disease – Jamaica Gleaner

COVID-19 has not only claimed more than a million lives around the world, but it is waging a mental and physical war on humanity, creating new and long-term, life-threatening health issues in previously healthy individuals who contract the dreaded virus.

Findings from several studies conducted around the world on the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on survivors range from temporary male infertility; the possibility that pregnant mothers may transmit it to the unborn child; new physical and mental health issues; and worsening of pre-existing medical conditions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, in an October 6 article, noted that individuals who were overweight or who had a history of smoking were at greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Research is also now suggesting that respiratory distress requiring intubation and intensive care, and inflammation associated with the virus, may lead to diabetes, a non-communicable disease that afflicts a high percentage of Jamaicans.

According to the Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey 2016-2017, diabetes was most prevalent among Jamaicans 75 years and older (42 per cent); 12 per cent among persons 15 years or older; among women, there was a pre-diabetes prevalence (13 per cent); and men 11 per cent. Between ages 15 and 74 years, the prevalence of diabetes was 12-10 per cent, compared to 7.8 per cent in 2007-2008, according to the survey.

One in two Jamaicans is classified as overweight, pre-obese or obese, according to the study.

COVID-19 causes inflammation and this is associated with the development of type 1 and 2 diabetes. There can also be the development of lung disease, heart disease and thyroid conditions, Dr Michael Boyne, professor of endocrinology and metabolism, and head of the Department of Medicine at The University Hospital of the West Indies, told The Sunday Gleaner.

The CDC noted that individuals with cancer; chronic kidney disease; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; heart conditions such as heart failure and coronary heart disease; immunocompromised state (weakened immune system); obesity; severe obesity; sickle-cell disease; smoking and type two diabetes are at increased risk of severe health challenges if they contract COVID-19. Pneumonia, it stated, was the most common diagnosis for individuals with severe COVID-19 infection.

Israeli scientist Dr Dan Aderka, speaking to the Jerusalem Post on October 7, suggested that COVID-19 could temporarily affect male fertility.

Not only was the virus found within the sperm of 13 per cent of screened COVID-19 patients, but there was a 50 per cent decrease in the sperm volume, concentration and motility in patients with moderate disease 30 days post-diagnosis, Aderka, from the Sheba Medical Center, reported.

Aderkas study found that a small sample of 12 patients is shown to have demonstrated moderate to severe changes in the testicular cells supporting sperm development and those producing testosterone, the hormone that induces sperm division and multiplication.

In July, an Italian study raised the possibility that the virus could be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy.

Weeks after contracting COVID-19, one local politician is happy he has not had any adverse side effects, and he is hoping it remains that way.

In fact, Julian Robinson, member of parliament (MP) for St Andrew South East, considers himself lucky for his quick recovery.

I had a mild version of the virus and it did not require any doctor. I took a combination of home remedies that was given to me. I am not sure what it was, but I believe it included ginger, Robinson told The Sunday Gleaner.

He attributed his speedy recovery to a healthy lifestyle regime developed over the years.

Playing his part to help fight the global pandemic, Robinson donated plasma. Convalescent plasma from patients who have already recovered from COVID-19 may contain antibodies against the disease. In an experimental trial, it is given to hospitalised persons fighting the disease in the hope that it may help them to recover.

With now 186 deaths and 8,670 persons infected with the coronavirus across the country now in the community spread phase, fear of contracting the disease is leading some Jamaicans to overmedicate.

Former president of the Jamaica Association of Private Pharmacies Owners, Rohan McNellie, said persons were stocking up on several over-the-counter medication and supplements.

Vitamin C, black seed oil, cod liver oil, melatonin, zinc and medications that are known to improve the immune system have been moving very fast. But some persons make up their own prophylactic, McNellie, owner of Three Angels Pharmacy, told The Sunday Gleaner.

And one naturopathic vendor said his special brew to steady the nervous system was also selling fast.

Some persons like Ronald Alney, a 63-year-old furniture maker from Molynes Road, St Andrew, said he makes his own strengthening products.

I have aloe vera in my yard. Since this disease, I been doing more regular washout (cleaning out the system) because people my age a target. So I clean out myself, he shared.

His special blend, he said, includes soursop juice with a little rum and Supligen, Irish moss, dragon and milk with carrot.

I drink healthy. I eat fish and vegetables, but not as often as I would like because they expensive. I dont get to eat so healthy, but I drink healthy. Plus, rum good for everything, he disclosed.

Alney also recommended lots of sunshine. Older persons, he said, should be encouraged to go outside for even 10 minutes of sun daily.

Other COVID-19 fighting home remedies shared with The Sunday Gleaner include rum, lime, ginger, honey and garlic, blended together, refrigerated and three tablespoons taken daily as preventative care.

Jamaica will now be using Remdesivir a vaccine on trial for the treatment of COVID-19, the Ministry of Health and Wellness announced earlier this month. Through the National Health Fund, the ministry plans to purchase 800 vials of the drug.

Although the World Health Organization said there were no benefits to individuals given Remdesivir for COVID-19, Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton said Jamaica would still acquire the drug, and he was supported by several pharmacists who lobbied for it to be available locally.

On Friday, Tufton said a shipment of the drug had arrived in the island.

United States Food and Drug Administration said Remdesivir was approved for Americans 12 years and older suffering acutely from the virus.

Food for life: New program in Carbondale hopes to improve health with food – Valley Advantage

As they look for ways to transform health in their communities, Wayne Memorial leaders pegged wholesome food and access to it among the first obstacles to knock down.

The health system based in Honesdale is launching its new Food Prescription Program from the Carbondale Family Health Center. The program is geared toward patients who struggle to both manage specific chronic illnesses and regularly face food insecurity or not having the proper food to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The program provides kits of shelf-stable goods and regular vouchers for fresh food and meat from a supermarket in the city.

We picked Weis in the Carbondale area because we know many of our patients in Carbondale walk, said Carol Kneier, the program administrator and a community health manager with Wayne Memorial.

The program also includes coaching on menu planning, portion control and health-conscious cooking techniques.

The health system aims to recruit 100 patients in the first year.

The AllOne Foundation, an organization born out of Highmarks 2015 acquisition of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, awarded Wayne Memorial with a $300,000 grant to fund the first three years.

Eligible patients have Type 2 diabetes, congestive heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, often called COPD.

It is our hope that through outreaches such as the Food Prescription Program, complications associated with medical conditions prevalent within our community can be prevented and ultimately result in fewer lengthy hospital stays, David Hoff, Wayne Memorials chief executive officer, said in a statement.

The health system is part of the Pennsylvania Rural Health Model, a pilot project in which the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services pay health systems on a pre-established budget rather than for every patient and procedure as a way to stabilize revenue.

Part of the Rural Health Model includes exploring new ways to reduce hospitalizations and improve community health.

Wayne Memorial identified those three chronic conditions diabetes, congestive heart failure and COPD as troublesome and persistent illnesses in the community. Those diseases also happened to go hand-in-hand with food insecurity.

Diabetes, one disease thats closely associated with diet and lifestyle choices, seems like an obvious choice for a food-as-medicine program.

In fact, the Geisinger health system is already treating diabetes and food insecurity with its Fresh Food Farmacy program, including at one clinic in Scranton, with striking results.

Wayne Memorials program is different for two key reasons. It doesnt have its own little supermarkets like Geisinger has at its Farmacies. However, it treats patients with other chronic diseases beyond diabetes.

While COPD and heart failure might seem less obvious, Kneier said the foods we eat have broad-reaching effects on our health, especially for people managing chronic disease.

For example, congestive heart failure and high-sodium diets dont mix.

Many times, a high-sodium diet will exacerbate the disease, Kneier said, adding patients who load up on sodium, found in salty foods, can retain fluid.

When they get more fluid, they have difficulty breathing, and they end up in the hospital, she said.

Now a low-salt diet sounds like no fun at all.

Thats why the Food Prescription Program will include different seasonings, for example Mrs. Dash salt-free options and Italian seasoning, as well as tips on how to use them to add flavor without ratcheting up the sodium.

So who is eligible?

Wayne Memorial is contacting eligible patients from the Carbondale clinic.

Kneier said routine monthly check-ins will be a critical part of the program, so doctors can monitor results and change course if needed.

Even if a patient is not eligible, Kneier said that other area food pantries are able to help address food insecurity, and that with the right tools and information, anyone can create more wholesome menus at home and improve their health through food.

There are resources out there, she said.

A survey from Parade magazine and the Cleveland Clinic says Americans are getting through it in different ways.

Some people have made healthy lifestyle changes since the pandemic began, while others struggle with mental health.

The coronavirus has motivated some people to adopt a better lifestyle, such as eating healthier foods.

Whats striking is that COVID has brought to attention the underlying risks of being overweight or having a chronic disease and getting very sick, said Dr. Mark Hyman, with the Cleveland Clinic. People are paying more attention to their health and theyre spending more time outdoors, theyre sleeping better, theyre eating better, theyre exercising more.

Despite the stress of COVID-19, the survey also shows 72% of those responding have a positive outlook on the future.
